5 - 2012 Business Awards of Distinction

Celebrating Business Success Success Beyond the Lemonade Stand Message Gary Thulin Chamber Board Chair On behalf of the Chamber board, staff and our members, we want to send our congratulations to the 2012 Chamber Business Awards of Distinction nominees, We also want to recognize the ongoing impact that last year’s award recipients, continue to make on our community, quality of life and local economy. As award nominees, you all contribute your leadership and business acumen to make Campbell River and our region a better place to live, a better place to do business and bring immeasurable value to our community as a whole. Thank you to the many businesses, individuals and organizations that continue to contribute to and support this annual awards event for business excellence in our region. A special thank you to tonight’s returning emcee, Ian Roberts and to all of the hard work and dedication that our volunteer organization committee, judging panel and volunteers contributed to make sure tonight’s event is a great success. We look forward to recognizing this year’s award nominees and celebrating your accomplishments and success tonight with you. Congratulations!

Many of today’s business leaders told us, a lemonade stand was their first venture into the ‘for profit’ business realm. Those business experiences became powerful drivers towards their entrepreneurship and business success today. We recognize that same entrepreneurial spirit in many of Campbell River’s youth and young professionals today. It’s the reason why we chose the lemonade stand as the theme for representing creativity, innovation, determination and striving for business excellence. Our Chamber is a business partner with our local business community and community leaders in promoting the importance of early business literacy, and the valuable experiences that are gained from owning and operating a business. Over the last eight decades we have been committed to support our current and future business leaders through events like the Business Awards of Distinction and the launch this year of our new community based Future Fund for Business Literacy. Join with us, together we can lead the way to even greater heights of business success for our community and region.

2012 Chamber Board Members Gary Thulin, Board Chair 2012/13 Colin Buss, Vice President Cathy Voth, Secretary/Treasurer Andy Leitch, Past President

Message Colleen Evans Chamber President & CEO It’s our Chamber’s 80th anniversary and this year’s awards event has special added importance. It’s of particular significance because it represents over eight decades of business excellence in Campbell River and it honors the volunteer commitment, and business leadership and success, that have laid the foundation for what we value in our business community today. This year’s nominees share some of the same leadership attributes of those from 80 years ago; a passion to be the best; a desire to succeed, creative and innovative thought processes and a commitment to their team and vision. It’s these leadership qualities that cross all award categories of this year’s nominees. Of course, tonight’s event and celebration would not be possible without the continued support of our partners and friends. Thank you to MNP our Presenting Partner and Nominee reception sponsor and to Nyrstar Myra Falls, our gala awards reception sponsor for your commitment to business excellence and to all of our award and event sponsors. A special thank you to our many dedicated volunteers who give so generously of their time and talent to support this event. Together, your commitment and success makes our community one that we all want to work and live in. Enjoy the evening and congratulations to each of tonight’s award nominees and award recipients.

10 years ago Dave Brown, owner of B.E.S.T. Life Coaching, realized that there must be more to life than just earning a paycheck. And Dave understood that only one person had control over his life: himself. Dave decided to embark on a journey of discovery, to find what was a meaningful life to him. Through his careers as an Engineer, Adult Educator, Volunteer and Executive Coach, in small business, corporations, university and government, and through his travels across Canada and to China, Dave has explored and experienced much of what the world has to offer. And Dave has explored the depths of his humanity. For over a decade Dave has worked with, trained or coached corporate professionals,

entrepreneurs, retirees, immigrants and individuals, all of whom have benefited from the diverse skill set and commitment to authenticity and top notch service. He chose to distinguish himself by completing an intensive year long ICF Credentialed Executive Coach and Leadership Training Program with Accomplishment Coaching in Seattle, WA. Through skillful questioning, keen insight and a generous and affirming heart, Dave helps his clients connect deeply with their emotions and with what is really ëupí for them. From there he invites his clients into clear commitment on next steps. For anyone who really wants to connect with themselves at a more meaningful level, Dave is the Life Coach for them.

After 13 successful years of providing hearing services in 100 Mile House, Martin and Jana decided to hire a new practitioner and relocate to Campbell River on wonderful Vancouver Island. In January 2010 they opened the Campbell River Hearing Clinic. For Jana and Martin hearing care is not only a job but a passion. More people suffer from hearing disability than any other ailment such as heart disease, and yet very few understand how it affects people’s lives and relationships. Serious consequences of hearing loss are withdrawal from conversations, increasing isolation, and possible depression.

A big part of Martin and Jana’s mission is to educate the public about how to identify, understand, and reduce the impact of this invisible disability. Besides the latest equipment and hearing aid technology, the highest level of care and support is fundamental to successful use of hearing aids. Once it is established that hearing aids are necessary, Martin and Jana are available as long as needed, training, fine tuning and adjusting until their clients feel entirely comfortable. Building a relationship with their clients are Martin and Jana’s highest priority.

Handcrafted wines on Quadra Island. SouthEnd farm & vineyards is a boutique winery owned by Ben McGuffie and Jill Ogasawara. Their goal is to make exceptional wines from grapes grown only on Quadra Island as well as the Comox Valley. They live and work at their 4 acre vineyard, raising a family, various animals and a big garden. When Ben and Jill were starting the winery and vineyard, they wanted to make a wine that really reflected the environment in which they lived so they chose to plant grapes that are adapted to our local climate instead of importing grapes from elsewhere. At their own vineyard they grow 3 whites: Siegerrebe,

Gewurztraminer, and Petit Milo, and 2 reds: Leon Millot and Marechal Foch. There are only 2 other vineyards they buy from; one also located on Quadra Island that grows Ortega, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Agria and Dornfelder as well as a 2 acre vineyard in the Comox Valley. The tasting room is open on weekends during the summer and always by appointment by calling the winery. Ben and Jill take great pride in growing and making award winning wines from a tiny little island off the east coast of Vancouver Island. Their wines are naturally and lovingly made with very little interference. A true taste of Quadra Island.

Congratulations to all the Nominees!

We appreciate the nomination and feel honored to be thought of with such high regard. The nomination alone feels like a huge success.

Twisted Chimney proudly works as part of your team with customized creative design. From promotional & marketing materials, branding, brochures/in-house stationary, trade show products, signage, vehicle wraps to decals and photography services. With over 25 years experience in the advertising, marketing, web & printing industry, one of Brian’s best attributes is the ability to successfully design and manage complex projects from concept to completion with attention to detail and efficiency while maintaining consistently high artistic standards. It started with a big dream of living in Campbell River and to follow a passion for

graphic design with a home based business. Soon afterwards, a home was found – a charming post and beam house, with a twisted brick chimney as its’ crowning glory. Known throughout the area as “the twisted chimney house”, it seemed only natural then to adopt the name for the graphic design business – and so, Twisted Chimney Design House was founded in 2011 by Brian Fidler.

As a business, we are solicited ,it seems, every week by people or organizations looking for sponsorship. We try to support as

many of these events as we can, particularly the local ones. Even when we sometimes have a hard time paying ourselves, we still somehow manage to make a contribution to whoever is seeking support. One of the things we have always done has been to save all of our refundable cans and bottles for local individuals who essentially make ends meet by returning these for the refund. We supported one individual in particular in this way for several years, giving him all our refundables every few days (and even collecting refundables from our customers for him as well). In the big scheme of things I’m sure this is minor, but it makes a tangible difference in this persons life which we see each day.

(50 or more employees) Honors a business that has demonstrated continual business excellence through positive business growth; exemplified customer service; and embraced an outstanding commitment to quality and the community.

Nominees Are: • Bill Howich Chrysler, RV & Marine • Nystar Myra Falls • Thrifty Foods

Award Category Sponsored by:

Number of years in business: 22 years Number of employees: 67 At Bill Howich Chrysler the motto “Yes We Can” speaks volumes about the company’s service focus and its accomplishments. The dealership is one of three on Vancouver Island to merit Chrysler’s 5-Star Status for exceptional customer service 8 years in a row. Howich was the GM at Warren Burd Motors in 1990 when he was given the opportunity to buy the business. It was a 10 year plan, but thanks to strong vehicle sales the purchase was completed in six years. An RV location was added 10 years ago. Island Outboard was purchased seven years ago and amalgamated into Bill Howich Chrysler RV and Marine two years ago. “We have grown from 18 employees to 64

employees and we’re still expanding,” Howich says. Howich always promotes from within the organization if possible. So it is no surprise that the company currently has five employees who have been on staff for more than 25 years. At the beginning of this year the Bill Howich Detail Center was opened with two employees to detail vehicles, RVs and marine units and has grown to six employees. “We not only do all our own detailing but we have other dealers subletting vehicles to us to be detailed,” Howich says. The company’s corporate citizenship is respected citywide. Its charity work includes the Bill Howich/ Salvation Army Golf Classic, the Minor Hockey Association vehicle give away which raised more than $30,000 last year, and the Campbell River Hospital Foundation “price is right” vehicle give away.

Change to a Healthier Lifestyle Steve Nagle became a fitness instructor at the YMCA in Vancouver in 1977. After moving to Campbell River in 1982 he established the extremely successful Sportfit fitness class at C.R. Parks and Recreation Dept. and the class has run twice a week from September to May ever since. 2011 marked the 30th anniversary of the class. Steve attributes the success of the Sportfit class to his unique blend of challenging exercises that can be adapted for all levels and a great sense of fun. Steve became a weight training instructor in 1990 and subsequently became a personal trainer. Steve is passionate about fitness and health. He has the ability to motivate others to live a healthier lifestyle and improve their quality of life. He believes that personal fitness should not be tied to fancy equipment or limited by facility schedules. Fitness should be simple and adaptable and should fit into everyone’s daily life. Steve started running in 1974 and has completed several marathons. In 1997 he took up the sport of triathlon and has now completed five Ironman’s. Besides running and triathlon Steve loves to snowboard, mountain bike, hike and scuba dive. His strong background in outdoor activities gives him the ability and knowledge to train clients in many different sports. He tells his clients “Be prepared to change”, change to a healthier lifestyle, new sport or new goals.

Number of years in business: 1 year As a new comer to Campbell River, I knew this was the place where I wanted to plant my roots and open my first business. I had a passion for fitness after my own battles with obesity. Growing up in rural Manitoba, I have always had a strong sense of community. I was the youngest member on the Community Center Board to be granted funds to promote fitness to the children. From the age of 9-18, I was active in organizing events, advertising, book keeping and holding youth activities for my community. I gained valuable knowledge and an appreciation for hard work and was respected. I carry these same work ethics with me today in my business. I understand that people have other options, but we

want them to be drawn to us because of our commitments to them, which in turn creates “raving fans”! I learned that it takes persistence to excellence to stand out in a market where there are many others doing what I did. I realized early on that it is how you connect with others that defines how successful you can be. To me, money is never the driving force to being an entreprenuer. I want to make a positive lasting impression to those I meet. How I make them feel which in turn draws them to what I offer. I also concluded from past experiences that I want to be the business that people talk about with pride. I believe that reputation influences success or failure.

Number of years in business: 39 years

I started as Sales Manager for Warren Burd Motors in 1997, after 1 year I became General Manager. In 1990 Mr. Burd gave me the opportunity to do a buy-in agreement with him. He had options to sell his business to outsiders, but knew I would treat his business and employees with care and respect. We agreed upon a 10 year agreement, but thanks to excellent sales I completed the agreement in only 6 years.

Marine. As of this year I have also opened a Detail Business. We are now known as Bill Howich Chrysler RV and Marine. Our business motto is “Yes We Can.” I have followed this motto my entire working career and feel that if you treat every situation with a positive attitude and that the sky is the limit you will succeed and through the years it has worked in growing my business to get to where it is now - employing over 60 people.

After a few years I decided to add an RV department to the business to become Bill Howich RV. Seven years ago I purchased what was Island Outboard, I amalgamated that with the RV division to create Bill Howich RV and

Born and raised in Campbell River, my formal working career began at the age of 12. Holding down 3 jobs while attending high school was definitely an eye opening entry into the world of work. Fortunately my parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a respect for others that carried me through those first years and a long varied history since then. I have operated my own Graphic Arts business, designed dream homes, painted airplanes and stock cars, managed a retail store, worked as a waitress, cashier and sales clerk and created many valued relationships throughout.

My insurance path that began as a Road agent has progressed to the Branch Manager position in two separate brokerages. I am a founding member of the Campbell River Parents of Special Needs Children Support Group, a board member and secretary for the Campbell River Association for Community Living, a founding member of Pilot Parents Campbell River, and a volunteer with Campbell River Special Olympics and the Lighthouse Centre Soup Kitchen.

One of the most valued relationships was with B.C Land Patriarch Mr.Frank Sullivan.

considered the market as being abundant instead of scarce. And I see other so called “competitors” as partners. I believe there is enough business for everyone... Not everyone is my client and not everyone is my competitor’s client. And when we take the view of providing a service to as many people as we can possibly help and believe that the universe is abundant, there’s no need to ‘compete’. It’s a bit out-of-the-box, but I believe it’s more empowering to believe this. The other notion I resist is the “the economy is bad” -- I don’t believe that. I believe there is opportunity everywhere. We just need to keep our eyes open for it, and be prepared to make adjustments to ourselves, and be bold and go for what we want.

BC HYDRO WORKING WITH LOCAL AND REGIONAL BUSINESSES

Number of years in business: 1 year Number of employees: 20 Celebrating our one year anniversary, Stereo Fitness opened in July 2011. We provide co-ed fitness classes for all ages and abilities, including children ages 4-13! A very personable studio, our members feel like a part of a social network. As the owner, I personally continue to instruct fitness classes and enjoy the interaction with the members. We provide professional, quality classes that are extremely fun! Providing a wonderful environment for people to come together and share in fitness, members gain confidence and a better quality of life. Proud of how far we have come in a short

period of time, with 400 members and growing, we are proud of our atmosphere and quality in everything we do and offer. We are excited to announce our expansion this summer!

BC Hydro collaborates across many levels with the Chamber, through initiatives like Power Smart to capital projects like the John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project. The John Hart project continues to move forward, subject to regulatory approvals, with construction starting summer 2013. Leading up to that project work and the economic opportunities, BC Hydro held a very successful business session in July that gave local businesses the opportunity to meet the three shortlisted companies competing for the project procurement contract. The Campbell River Chamber of Commerce was part of that process. For more information on John Hart go to www.cr.majorprojects.ca
