TRANSFORMATIONS ON THE SHORE
Don Daniels, President, Shoreline Arts Society Many of you saw the magnificent chainsaw carvings that were featured last year at Frank James Park in Willow Point, and I am pleased to announce that not only will many of your favourite carvers be coming back, but we have some new ones signed up. The carvers will fire up their chainsaws at 7 am on Wednesday, June 21st for our 21st Annual Competition. They will spend five days creating works of art from donated logs, and hundreds of people will visit over the following days to watch the transformation. The event is free, and last year we had visitors from more than 20 different countries. On Saturday, June the 24th we hold a Quick Carve competition where the carvers spend one hour making smaller logs into little works of art. On Sunday, you will get a chance to own your own carving when the quick carve pieces and the novice carvings are offered at auction before the awards presentation. On Sunday afternoon at 2pm, the decision of the judges will be announced and prizes awarded, and then by 3pm we will be drawing the winning raffle tickets with the top prize being Pick of the Park from some of the top carvings.

The long range weather forecast is for sunshine and temperatures around 20 degrees – perfect weather for bringing your friends and family down to Willow Point to witness the carvings, enjoy the view, and relax and walk around Willow Point. Parking is always a challenge, so maybe plan to park a little further away and walk to the park. There are lots of nearby coffee shops and restaurants to enjoy, or, starting Friday at 11am, come to the Lions’ Willow Point Hall for some
free shade, coffee, lemonade, and a hotdog. As in previous years, there will be vendors inside and outside the Hall selling their goodies. Once again Western Forest Products and Timberwest have donated the logs for our carvers. John Ellis from Pacific Wood Waste as well as Ken and Brandon Fear from Fearless trucking, have stepped up to help move the logs. Bert Campbell at Contain-Away lends us his wood and garbage bins, and some time in September the folks at ASL JV deliver the carvings to their new homes. The carvings will be available for viewing all summer. We depend on city and provincial cash grants as well as donations from sponsors to operate every year. Local hotels provide free accommodation for out-of-town carvers. Restaurant and food stores supply free lunches, and coffee, muffins, fruit, and juice are also due to the generosity of Campbell River businesses. A number of equipment companies not only lend us their equipment or give us great discounts, but many of their employees help set up the park. We must be doing something right – most of our army of volunteers has signed up again this year. Thank you! Be sure to stop by the raffle tent and buy a $5 ticket to win a carving or one of the many donated prizes. Support the event – buy a t-shirt and enjoy the show!

Campbell River's Transformations on the Shore carving competition is a summer highlight It starts one morning in late June. The far off buzzing of chainsaws. And it can mean only one thing, the Transformations on the Shore carving competition has begun at Frank James Park in Willow Point, in Campbell River's southern end. It's Campbell River's premier summer event that draws chainsaw carvers from all over British Columbia, other parts of Canada, the United States and even Europe for a friendly competition. It's technically a competition but the atmosphere is relaxed and more cooperative than competitive, even though – or maybe because – there are a range of levels from novice to professional. "For them it's a carving week and it's like a family," says Don Daniels, president of the Campbell River Shoreline Arts Society, the organization that puts on the celebration. "It's like a social event." Carvers can compete in novice, amateur, semiprofessional and professional categories. The event serves as the unofficial lead off into Canada Day celebrations in Campbell River. The weeklong carving competition begins this year on Wednesday, June 21 and runs to Sunday, June 25. In reality, the event runs for months because the completed carvings remain on site at Frank James Park in Willow Point, overlooking the entrance to Discovery Passage right up until September. And the carvings are popular attractions as visitors and residents alike love to wonder around the carvings and look at them closely. In fact, from the first crank the chainsaws on the first day until the carvings are dispersed in September, spectators flock to watch the carvings take form and then come back to enjoy them at their leisure.

Jesse Toso picked up the chainsaw for the first time at Campbell River Shoreline Arts Society's Annual "Transformations on the Shore" Chainsaw Carving Competition in 2005. With his "Phoenix" carving he took first prize in the Amateur Category and has been carving ever since! Jesse is a woodworker in beautiful Vancouver, B.C. and travels throughout BC and Canada chainsaw carving in various exhibitions and competitions.
Marina has been involved in carving for close to 6 years now. Just a year ago she decided to pick up a chainsaw. When she did she fell even more in love with the craft. She comes from Medicine Hat, Alberta and is the mother of three children. Her husband is her assistant.

It takes a village... Western Forest products and Timberwest donate the wood, and then logs are hauled to the site by Pacific Wood Waste and Fearless Trucking. They are moved into place using a forklift from C&L Supply. We’ve got morning coffee and muffins and then lunch provided, as well as water throughout the day, and healthy snacks in the afternoon. First Aid is on standby, and the site is secured overnight. Local businesses supply, donate, or give us a break on safety equipment, scaffolding, stain, and the rent for portable washrooms. We rely on grants from the Province of BC and the City, as well as cash donations from local businesses, banks, and the Willow Point BIA. We use donated prizes for our fundraising raffle, and encourage everyone to buy one of our t-shirts and raffle ticket. Contain-A-Way lends us dumpsters for excess wood and sawdust as well as the garbage that any large event produces. We recycle as much as possible. In September, ASL JV delivers the carvings to their new homes, and Econo Ezy Box Storage looks after our equipment and supplies year round.
