Affordable Recreation The Strathcona Regional District and the City of Campbell River believe that the strength of a community can often be measured by the health and wellness of the members within it. For this reason our recreation departments work together to try to eliminate as many barriers to full participation as possible.

Quality Foods – Rec Bucks This program enables Quality Foods shoppers to redeem their Quality Foods points for Rec Bucks. It’s easy to participate! Simply cash in 200,000 Quality Foods points for a $20 Rec Bucks voucher which is redeemable for recreation programs, admission passes and facility rentals.

Jumpstart 4 – 18 Years JumpStart is a community-based charitable program that helps kids in financial need participate in organized sport and recreation. To request funding for a program, complete an application form which is available at the Sportsplex or Community Centre. If you require more information regarding the program, call the Community Centre at 250-286-1161. Kidsport™ So all kids can play!

6 – 18 Years At Kidsport™ we believe that no child should be left on the sidelines. That’s why Kidsport™ eliminates the financial barriers to sport participation. Kidsport™ is a community-based sport charity that provides grants for Canadian children age 6 to 18 to participate in a recognized sport, led by a qualified coach. The sport must be affiliated with a member organization of Sport BC and must be a member of the Campbell River Kidsport™ organization. Grants have a cap of $200 per year, per child. To apply go to: www.kidsportcanada.ca. Mail completed application to: Kids Sport BC, #260-3820 Cessna Dr. Richmond, BC V7B 0A2

The Recreation & Culture Department exists to provide recreation and culture opportunities and ultimately to help support and create a vibrant, healthy and engaged community! In 2014, staff undertook an extensive review of service provision and we had an excellent response rate from the community. As you read the Recreation Guide you will see some changes that have been made in response to public input such as; childcare parallel to some fitness classes, new weekend programming, and more drop-in and unstructured activity choices. We are also working out in the community to support other organizations with their recreation efforts. We hope you will find something of interest to support your active lifestyle!

The Morning Catch With Jenn-O! Every Weekday Morning from 6am to 10am I was born in the big city of Toronto, but have always been an island girl at heart! I’m in love with the city of Campbell River and the generous, welcoming individuals that make this one of the greatest places on earth. I CAN’T WAIT to get married out here in August, and I am currently undergoing the wonderful, (yet panicky/ exciting/ crazy) stage of planning for our upcoming wedding. I’m proud to call this city home, and whether its a quick stroll near the ocean, or a charity event over the weekend, I am constantly blown away by the love and support our community pours out. Walking/ biking the trails, smell of the ocean, beaches, and the endless amount of ‘Hidden Gems’ to explore are just a few of the many things I love most about living out here. I hope you’ll join me on the Morning Catch weekday mornings between 6-10am. We’ll talk about everything from upcoming events and local issues, to the great artists that make this station tick and maybe even some free prizes to keep you going too! I can be reached at 287-44-44 or via email at: jenno@2dayfm.ca

Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds—deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim. Level 5 Intro to the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim. Level 6 This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Also includes front dive, treading water in deep water for 1½ minutes, dolphin kick and a 75m swim. Level 7 This level builds skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim. Level 8 Hypothermia, dangers of open water, rescue breathing, surface dives, stride entries, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke and a distance swim of 300m. Level 9 Wise choices and peer influence, boating regulations, self ice rescue, surface dives, shallow dives, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke, as well as a 400m distance swim. Level 10 Introduction to butterfly and scissor kick, fitness, sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, surface dives, as well as a 500m endurance swim.
