COMOX — Jane Slingsby says she brags about St. Joseph’s General Hospital all across B.C. Slingsby, clinical educator with the Eye Bank of British Columbia in Vancouver, is impressed by the number of people who participate in the eye donation program at St. Joseph’s. The program, which is run through the Eye Bank, uses eye donations from anybody between the ages of two and 75. Slingsby says St. Joseph’s is somewhat unique in how it runs the program, and the local hospital is one of the top in B.C. in this area. “They stand out as the best team for the size of the community,” said Slingsby. “Proportionately, this

been able to keep the interest, and it’s amazing.” As of about 10 or 12 years ago, a mandatory reporting law came into effect in B.C., which means all hospitals must report
all deaths of people aged 75 and younger, explained Slingsby. When Slingsby started working at the Eye Bank six years ago, she began monitoring that reporting and comparing deaths
and donations every six months to see which hospitals and which units within each hospital were reporting. “I brag about Comox all over Cont. on Page 3

Donations offer a second chance to see From Page 2 the province,” she said. “They were able to carry this through without that mandatory reporting law. When you consider the size of the hospital and the few who die in that age range and the challenges of weather and transportation, this hospital would have the highest number of donors per number of deaths 75 and younger.” Seventeen people donated their eyes at St. Joseph’s between January to June, according to Slingsby. “(That) is huge, the highest we’ve been since 2008,” she said. “It’s huge, the contribution of this community.” Rosie Chrest, a licensed practical
nurse, has been working in the eye donation program for 15 years. Chrest is one of five enucleators at St. Joseph’s — along with Denise Bagnet, Leah Zboyorsky, Christine Koppa and Joanne Trithardt — who retrieve the eyes. They work with chaplains Brian Ducedre and Steve Hill, who is the hospital’s director of pastoral care, mission and medical ethics. “We have a fantastic team of nurses who do the harvesting,” said Hill. “They come out at all hours of the night because of the opportunity to do some good. It’s probably near and dear to their hearts.” Chrest knows firsthand the
importance of sight, as her cousin went blind when they were about 11 years old. “It was just the whole difference to see someone who could see then couldn’t see,” said Chrest. “Sight is so huge. I think it’s a great gift we all take advantage of and don’t realize how important it is. For this, I think it’s great people get that second chance to see.” Donated eyes can be used for two types of transplants: corneal and scleral. “There are only a few diseases a person has that prevent them from being a donor,” said Chrest. “You can have poor eyesight and still donate.” The cornea is the clear portion of the eye, and it corneal transplants are used

when there are physical or chemical injuries to the cornea, when there is cell damage as a result of cataract surgery and when a person has diseases such as Fuch’s Dystrophy and Keratoconus. The sclera is the white portion of the eye, and it donated sclera can be used to support artificial eyes, to reconstruct the eyelid and as part of glaucoma surgery. Each eye donor can potentially help eight to 10 people, and that number is even higher when you consider people whose tissue can’t be used for transplants but can be used for education and research, according to Slingsby. Chrest and the other four enucleators will retrieve the eyes,
and it’s Hill and Ducedre who will have the conversations with patients and their families about donating their eyes. “It’s proved to be a very positive multi-disciplinary collaboration between pastoral care, nurses and the Eye Bank,” said Hill. “It takes all of us working together to do a great job. It’s an opportunity for people to give and make a difference. It’s a stellar program from top to bottom.” Hill and Chrest praise St. Joseph’s administration and the hospital’s board of directors for supporting the eye donation program through the years. Chrest says eye donation can bring families some comfort at a difficult time.

Fishing Corner
with Don Daniels I was talking fishing with Ken Hunter and Roberts Lake was the destination to try my luck. This lake is ideal for boating and fishing and was a popular spot for windsurfing in the early 80s. At the restaurant are pictures of anglers who have caught trout in the 7 pound range. Today, fishing can produce trout from 4 to 5 lbs trolling plugs or spoons in water in excess of 50 feet. Roy Williams has opened Indoor Storage Solutions in the Campbell River Common Mall. The new business has a large indoor storage available for boats, RVs and automobiles. The local guides are reporting good catches of pinks and sockeye and some nice springs are coming in the first 2 weeks of August. I was fishing Snakehead, Echo and Little Echo lake for trout in my belly boat and had fun catching small trout on chironomid and Muddler minnow flies. Fishing Corner is meant to promote sport fishing on the North Island and inform readers about what is happening in the area. If you have information about fishing, Please contact me at dond@campbellrivermirror.com

So while it is worth reassessing what you may want to convert to cash I would caution the following: Some of your items may well be worth considerably more than simply the current metal value. Consider having your pieces professionally appraised and also evaluate whether you have appropriate household insurance coverage - a good idea at any time.

Now before any of you write in to complain that they were ‘ripped-off’ by a gold buyer let me reiterate what I have said in previous articles: You will not get anywhere near the ‘spot-price’ for gold or silver unless it is in bullion form, i.e. gold bars or ingots with a purity of .9999 parts per 1,000 and silver with a similar purity. Gold purity is measured by Karat (such as 10K) or carat (10c). This means that a percentage of gold is mixed with other alloys so when
selling you will get an equivalent percentage of the ‘spot-price’. Added to the equation, the buyer then has to accumulate sufficient quantity of the material to warrant a trip to the refinery. The buyer then has to pay the refinery to fire-up the furnace and melt down the items. Once the metal has been refined it goes through the assay process (the assay is the test for purity) and then, and only then, can the ‘buyer’ negotiate a price which they will receive from the refinery or

PORT HARDY — David Cox needed to travel only 33 kilometres to get from his Colwood home to the start of last weekend’s Cowichan Valley Grape Escape Tour to benefit Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He opted for the scenic route. Cox, a retired banker from the Victoria-area neighbourhood of Colwood, pedaled 1,000 kilometres to the northern terminus of Highway 19 and back again as a tune-up for the 150-km fundraising tour in Duncan. “I’m 66 years old, I have a heart condition and I fractured my shoulder a year ago,” Cox said during his brief stop at the waterfront park in Hardy Bay. “When I got to the top of the hill and looked down
David Cox of Colwood, 66, took a 1,000-kilometre detour through Port Hardy on his way from home to the starting line of last week’s 150 km Cowichan Valley Grape Escape Tour to benefit MS. It is the second time in three years Cox has made his solo Van Isle End to End to End Ride to End MS. at the water, it was nirvana.” This is the second time in three years Cox has embarked on his one-man End-toEnd-to-End Ride to End MS, a personal extension of the South Vancouver Island MS Chapter’s annual

Cowichan event. It would have been three years in a row, had Cox not suffered the aforementioned shoulder injury during a training ride in wet conditions in 2010. “This is an unsupported ride,” said Cox, a tall, lanky man with thinning hair and a quick smile. “There’s no cost to the charity and no cost to the public purse.” Cox travels on a bike laden with all the gear he needs to camp along the way, and a bright flag reading, “I will end MS”. His trip began Fri.,
Aug. 5 in Colwood. He spent four days pedaling the 500 kilometres north to Port Hardy, camping out the first two nights and treating himself to a motel room in Woss before rolling in to Port Hardy lateafternon Aug. 8. He planned to rest up in town “for a couple hours” before turning around and pedaling another 60 kilometres south to camp out in Alder Bay before continuing the trip south. “I need to be back at Brentwood College in Mill Bay by Friday

The South Island MS Chapter is unique, in that it has its own physical therapy facility on-site. “Some of the funding will stay there,” Cox said. “The rest goes to MS research.” Cox, who has been involved in MS benefit rides for the last 17 years and who is a former chapter director, has a stake in the fight. His niece, Leslie Campbell of Toronto, was stricken with the disease in her 30s and is wheelchairbound. Report whale sightings to Vancouver Aquarium This summer, as you head out in your boat to enjoy a day on the water, you are likely to catch sight of resident cetaceans— whales, dolphins and porpoises— and sea turtles that live along the coastline. Report your sightings to the Vancouver Aquarium’s B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network at 1 866 I SAW ONE (1 866-472-9663) or www.wildwhales. org to help protect and conserve these animals. “The Vancouver Aquarium’s B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network relies on the participation of the public to help gather information that is being provided to scientists across the province,” explains Caitlin Birdsall, program coordinator. “We use the information to monitor the species’ movements and activities along B.C.’s expansive coastline to better understand their behaviours and help inform important research, conservation and recovery actions.” Some species, such as the killer whale, are large, distinctive and easy to identify. Other species, however, are more difficult to distinguish. A printable Species ID Guide is available online at www. wildwhales.org/
An orca passes by Francisco Point at the southern end of Quadra Island. Photo by Alistair Taylor/Midweek identifying-species. It provides observers with clues, such as body shape and colour, behaviours and group size, to determine which species were seen. The following are key observations to note: ● Location ● Time ● Species ● Number of animals ● Sighting distance ● Behaviours, such as breaching, fluking, and feeding ● If possible, photos/video to accompany a sighting Observers can report their sightings by calling 1 866 I SAW ONE (1 866-4729663) or log in online at www.wildwhales.org. A personal logbook is also available to frequent sighters for easy tracking. Observers like Catherine Smith,
who has been living on Quadra Island for over 30 years, bring valuable information to the Network. “I mostly listen for the whales as they have a distinctive sound when they blow,” Smith says. “I leave windows and doors open as much as possible so I can catch the blow at any time when I am home. I also scan for boats that appear to be moving slowly as they often indicate they have seen a whale and are waiting for it to surface again.” It is estimated that B.C.’s coastline is home to approximately 18 species of cetaceans. “Six of these species are either endangered or threatened,” adds Birdsall. “When analyzed, these sightings reports help researchers better understand cetacean habitat and are used
