Mayor Charlie Cornfield will not be seeking re-election in November’s municipal election. And it’s not because of his health, the one-term mayor pointed out. He’s going back to his day job. “I want to make it very clear that my reason for leaving has

nothing to do with my health,” Cornfield said in a statement released Thursday morning. “I am perfectly fine. “The reason I am leaving is I have been on a leave of absence from the provincial government for the past three years. That leave expires at the end of the year. It is time to return to my career.” Cornfield is a recreation spe-

cialist with the Ministry of Forests. During his term of mayor he dealt with some personal health issues that took him away from office for a period. In recent months though, he has been as active in the office and in performing his duties at various community events as ever. “Those of you who really know me understand that I have always put our community first and

A vehicle rollover near Rosewall Creek ended in tragedy Tuesday. Ruth Oppel was a passenger in the vehicle and died as a result of the accident. Barbara Enger was the driver, and was seriously injured but is expected to recover. Both women are from Campbell River. While travelling southbound on Highway 19 at about 5:40 a.m. on Tues. Sept. 6, Enger swerved to miss a deer, according to a news release by Const. Kristi Martin of Comox Valley RCMP. Enger then lost control of the vehicle, which slid into the median ditch, and flipped over several times before coming to rest on its roof. Both women were wearing their seat belts, and speed and alcohol were not factors in this accident, Martin said. Martin asks anyone who may have witnessed this accident to call the Comox Valley RCMP Traffic Services at 250-338-1321.

Twenty-one-year-old Shawna Brittany Maranduk pleaded guilty to two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and failing to appear in court, and one count of obstructing a police officer when she appeared in court on Sept. 7. The Community Response Unit (CRU), primarily tasked with seeking out wanted persons in the community, arrested Maranduk on Sept. 6 for outstanding warrants. During the arrest, she tried to conceal her identity by providing a false name, and two knives were found hidden

She recently completed a short jail term for breaching the terms of her probation order. We have balanced economic and social and environmental issues while moving the community to a bright and promising future.” Cornfield presided over the city during a particularly challenging time. The global economic recession hit Campbell River hard. The forest sector in particular was slapped with job losses approaching 1,500 people. “No council has had to face a situation as serious as the permanent closing of the (Elk Falls) pulp and paper mill,” Cornfield said. “Significant change was happening and there was little we could do to stop it. The best we could hope for was to manage it and minimize the impact, while preparing for the future.” The city lost $5 million in municipal taxes which forced the city to cut services and budgets. City staff were reorganized on a cost-neutral

basis and tax increases were kept to a minimum, Cornfield said. Cornfield cited a reorganized Rivercorp, Highway 19A improvements, the completion of Spirit Square and the conversion of Campbell River to a greener community as some of the positive accomplishments by the city during his tenure. On the regrets side of the ledger, Cornfield said he needed to spend more time on council issues and with new councillors. Instead, he had to spend time on organizational issues, the lack of a Chief Administrative Officer, Rivercorp as well as dealing with the mill closure. “I wish I could have saved the mill but...would have liked to see a community forest and value-aded forestry, including a new sawmill,” Cornfield said. “Would have liked to have done more for the tourism sector marketing and promoting Campbell River.” Cornfield would also have liked to clean up the 3.5 acre waterfront lot the city owns and connect Robert Ostler Park to Discovery Harbour Marina and the Seawalk.

Justice Cohen will not find a link between wild salmon declines and farmed fish if he interprets the expert testimonies the same way as B.C. Salmon Farmers Association executive director Mary Ellen Walling. Started on Aug. 25, the aquaculture hearings at the Cohen Commission finished yesterday. Walling attended and said she is fairly confident Justice Cohen will not salmon farms responsible for the collapse of the Fraser River sockeye. “If he’s basing his recommendations on, and listening to the testimony that I’m hearing, then no he would have no reason to draw that conclusion, because when you go through those independent reports by the technical specialists you don’t see it.” T h e re p o r t s s h e referred to contain fish health data collected by salmon farms since 2002, and studied by provincial fish health veterinarians. The veterinarians also collected their own data to compare. During the aquaculture hearings independent experts analyzed the data and according to Walling, said they found the quantity and quality of the data “impressive,” and did not link salmon farms to the decline. Dr. Josh Korman, of Ecometric Research Inc. wrote a report outlining his conclusions, where he pointed out that during the low return year in 2009 and the high return year of 2010, salmon farm disease related deaths remained fairly constant. “Ne g ative ef fects of salmon farms on retur ns of Fraser River sockeye between 2002 and 2010 were not apparent based on a qualitative comparison with salmon farming data provided in this report,” wrote Korman. “Fraser River sockeye returns show a declining trend over this period, with exceptionally low and high returns in 2009 and 2010, respectively,” he added.

“T he number of mortalities on salmon far ms potentially caused by disease has remained relatively constant over this same period.” However, Alexandra Morton, executive director of Raincoast Research Society disag rees, saying the independent experts were not trained to read the raw data, and that the data left out a specific disease that she believes is causing sockeye salmon to decline; the disease is called marine anemia. Dr. Mark Sheppard, lead veterinarian, for Aquaculture Environmental Operations, DFO, originally analyzed the data and did not classify fish as having marine anemia, because he doesn’t believe the disease exists, according to Morton. “If you look at the data base they have the disease, I mean that’s

what the data base says to me, but they deny it exists even though the vet has reported the symptoms of marine anemia 587 times,” said Morton, adding that the symptoms of the disease were reported, but the disease was not actually diagnosed by Sheppard. Morton wants Dr. Kristi Miller, who testified that she found marine anemia in wild salmon stocks, to be granted access to test farmed fish in time to prepare a report before Cohen writes his report. Walling said that the raw data needs to be

read by a trained fish health expert or veterinarian or else false conclusions could be drawn. If “you’re not a fish health veterinarian looking at the data you can cherry pick through the data and speculate about what the results contain,” said Walling. Morton also said that 60 per cent of salmon farm fish that die are not diagnosed, meaning the cause of death is unknown. According to Walling, the survival rate of farmed fish is around 95 to 96 per cent, while wild fish returns are between three and seven per cent. The Cohen Commission will continue on, starting the hearings for hydro, water, and temperature on Sept. 15. A number of possible impacts have already been heard, including numerous environmental factors.

Cohen’s final report is due on June 30 2012.

NOTICE OF CHANGES TO BUILDING BYLAW At its regular meeting on August 30, 2011 Campbell River City Council adopted revisions to the City’s Building Bylaw to implement the new Provincial Solar Hot Water Ready Regulation. Campbell River is one of 36 communities in BC that have signed onto this regulation, which requires construction of new single family dwellings and single family dwellings with suites be built to be solar hot water ready. The regulation requires; • • •

Designated space for future installation of solar collectors Structural members associated with the designated space to be designed appropriately Installation of two conduits between the designated space for the solar collectors and the area adjacent to the building’s primary service water heater.

The changes to the Building Bylaw will come into effect on October 3, 2011. All applications for building permits for construction of new single family dwellings and single family dwellings with suites that are received on, or after October 3 will need to fulﬁll the requirements of the Solar Hot Water Ready Regulation. Please note that the bylaw changes are not requiring the installation of a solar hot water system. Additionally, existing homes are not required to be retroﬁt with this capability. Please refer to www.campbellriver.ca to view a copy of Building Bylaw 3060, and copy of the Provincial Solar Hot Water Ready Regulations. The City’s website also has information on changes to building permit applications. A local pro g ram believes healthy mothers make healthy babies. Funded by provincial Pregnancy Outreach P ro g r a m s ( P O P S ) , Baby’s Best Chance is designed to help ensure local mothers have the healthiest babies they can possibly have. Program coordinator Linda Kempling, who has been with Baby’s Best Chance since 1992, said she can see that the program is very important to Campbell River. “It’s huge because we really get a lot of people who are saying ‘I don’t know what I would do without it,’” explained Kempling. It offers free prenatal vitamins and supplements, food vouchers, an emergency food cupboard, rides to doctor’s appointments, and bus tickets to mothers with financial problems, among other things. Kempling said the bus tickets and emergency food cupboard are new aspects to the program created in response to a greater need in the community. “We find that so many more families are so much hungrier than they were in the past,” said Kempling. “The economy is a little scarier in Campbell River right now.” Although the program helps women in financial need, it is about more than that, according to Kempling. “The support aspect really is huge, that is one of the biggest things that we do here,” explained Kempling. The program has a developed support network for mothers-to-be and mothers-who-are, offering weekly dropin pre and postnatal groups, walking and swimming g roups, picnics, and expertise from a registered dietician and a registered nurse, among other services. Twenty-two-year-old Kari Wasylciew joined the program about eight months ago as a mother-to-be. She struggled to put into words how valuable the information and support was to her as single woman pregnant with her first baby, repeating that it was “invaluable,” and that the support and knowledge she gained

helped her greatly. “You’re getting the proper information, but you’re also getting the experience,” said Wasylciew. “To have somebody that you know is going through the exact same thing that you are is so

relieving.” T his past Tues., Wasylciew was at her last prenatal drop-in with her daughter Kaya, who is just over a month old. She was telling her birthing story to all the expectant mothers to prepare them for their own big day. And it doesn’t end there; Wasylciew has can continue on in variety of different programs until Kaya is six. The program also accommodates women who don’t like group sessions by offering one-on-one support. While designed for women who have a high risk pregnancy, that can include something like social isolation

as well as economic or medical stresses. Kempling said women who would like to participate in the program who don’t need the extra financial help are more than welcome. “It doesn’t have to be low income; it’s just for women who really truly need that extra little bit of support, maybe they’re brand new to town,” said Kempling, “if a woman feels like she needs the extra support then she feels like that for a reason.” The office is located at 487 10th Ave., and is open from 8:30 a.m.4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Shine goes off the Order of B.C. Does disgraced ex-Premier Gordon Campbell deserve the Order of British Columbia? Well apparently some think so and a whole bunch of others don’t think so. We say: Does There is a petition floating around on the internet against Campbell receiva politician ing the OBC. automatically The Order of British Columbia is deserve an award certainly a badge of honour for recipients for years of commitment to the broader community. People who have previously been awarded the OBC have advocated for change, organized non-profit orga-

nizations, served their communities without asking for recognition and actually made a positive difference in people’s lives. Honestly, can we say this about Gordon Campbell? Sure he helped bring the Olympics here, but under his rule he cut social services, strong-armed unions and allowed scandal to rock the Liberal boat. Think BC Rail. Think DUI. Think lying about the HST. Think back. Does any politician deserve such distinction, especially when he left office in less than happy circumstances and caused a sigh of relief when he vacated

the premier’s chair? To give Gordon Campbell this civilian honour makes it appear to be a political honour instead. Politicians can and often do some good but when a cloud of controversy and suspicion follows them they are not deserving of an award that honours current or former British Columbia residents for conspicuous achievements in any field. There are so many truly worthy people who deserve this honour more than a politician with a cloud over his head. Let’s not take the shine off this prestigious medal. – Black Press

Good point: Strathcona One wonders if the Friends of Strathcona Park have really had time to meet John (the cowboy), who manages the Western Wilderness Resort, before embarking on their alternative trail initiative. Firstly the roughing in of an alternative trail to cut western wilderness resort out of the picture only disturbs more wildlife and fauna. Secondly John and company would be a great asset to the group and its maintenance of the trail. He is well know it Tofino as a supporter of environmental issues in Clayoquot Sound, and has devoted time and much money into helping save the wild salmon. He is a friend, not an enemy of the wild lands. A face to face meeting with him would be at least polite and probably a very positive step forward for the friends of the park. I marched across Vancouver island from the Bedwell to Comox Lake in 1969, as part of an elite armed forces unit’s introduction to West Coast terrain. Clearly there are many dangerous and challenging spots along the crossing. Any initial trail maintenance and emergency stations along the Bedwell end should be much welcomed, not poo poohed: They may well save lives. Finally, horses managed by the “cowboy” will be as natural an event as plodding humans with their accoutrements. Impact will be in keeping with all guidelines set Continued on A13

No Virginia, this isn’t Mister Roger’s neighbourhood

There is just cause to suggest that we are not living in Mister Roger’s Neighborhood. Recently it was reported that prejudice on a fairly significant scale exists in Campbell River against people who rent. This “don’t you be my neighbor” mentality is reportedly supported by council who dropped a rezoning application (but still pocketed the $2,700 application fee) without exercising due process and flying in the face of their own community plan. Why does anyone equate a renter with being a sub-standard individual? Why is it assumed that renters will bring down the “form and character” of an established neighbourhood as assumed by Coun. Roy Grant? Why would the mistaken belief that

Why do the residents of South McLean area think that renters are synonymous with noise, traffic, drug dealing and decreased property values? Of course, in the suburbs of Campbell River, a dealer or a grow-op owner or a meth lab owner would never ever own a home, such people are only renters, right? Everyone knows renters are more inclined to crime, loud parties and shady lifestyles. Or so our sensitivities dictate. These people insist that housing values will decrease because renters have no pride or vested interest in where they live. I do agree some people have no pride but that is not a product of being a renter it is a prod-

uct of not having pride and respect. This situation does not support the “neighborhood diversity and healthy communities” of our city plan, this is blatant discrimination and constitutes an unfair intervention into the housing market to limit access for one particular group of people. In our current economy, many houses aren’t selling and as more people don’t have the credit to buy houses, more families are renting in neighbourhoods that normally wouldn’t have renters. How are the “renters” being treated by the neighbours? Do homeowners take the time to get to know them? Do homeowners invite them to the neighbourhood events? Or do they just shun them; students, young couples starting out, people who have lost jobs, ended

marriages, run out of employment insurance, lost their homes, work for minimum wages, or find themselves on income assistance. Is there no “zone” for them in our Official Community Plan except at the back end of the community? I bet some of these “renters” do everything they can to enhance their income. They probably collect bottles and other recyclables so they can pay their rent and eat, buy prescription medications or pay their hydro bills. It is apparently not such a beautiful day in the neighbourhood when these “scavengers” are lurking around the community recycling bins. Someone complained that she didn’t feel safe getting out of her car and had to go to the landfill instead. Continued on A13

Passage was a great adventure When my good friend from Campbell River told me about an annual event of Discovery Passage Passage, I got intrigued. Being an adventurous person at heart, I could not resist the temptation. Immediately, I registered my husband and myself for this adventure.

Mr. (Geoff) Goodship, the organizer of this event, and his wife, kindly offered us an accommodation. Now, there was only matter of finding a house /dog sitter for our 14-yearold dog. The Discovery Passage Passage was the fifth annual event of crossing the Discovery

They are single disabled people getting up to $375 a month to rent and $531 a month to pay for everything else. They are single parents with a couple of kids who are collecting up to $660 for rent and $376 for everything else. They are students trying to work it out on a student loan. They are full time service workers whose minimum

wage pay cheques are $640 before deductions. They have children who are suffering from the highest poverty rate in Canada and constitute over 50 per cent of food bank use. Sitting on a pail outside a recycling bin is humiliating as is waiting around with a shopping cart. A sign saying “No Scavenging” is not going to deter someone who needs their diabetic supplies or to feed their children. They are not boogey-men. They are poor men, and women, who would just really appreciate you giving them your bottles and not judg-

ing them because they are not like you. What needs to go into the landfill is your bigotry and attitudes, not your recyclables. In Mister Rogers neighbourhood you don’t have to look like everybody else and be like everybody else to be acceptable and to feel acceptable. (Fred Rogers). We were all deeply touched by a compelling speech of an elder, who spoke of a high suicide rate among the young members of the band. There was only 20 minutes or so to enjoy their hospitality and we had to head back across the Passage before the changing tide made the crossing difficult if not impossible. As I watched the bathtub race I did notice that these young drivers put on an excellent show of safe boating and a great effort in sportsmanship. However, there was one young driver who should have been recognized above all others, #240 (editorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s note:

Volunteer fair this Saturday The Campbell River Volunteer Society will host a volunteer fair at Spirit Square from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 10. The event includes music by Rick Benn, and Volunteer Passport prizes. “Volunteering is a great way to: Meet new people, learn new skills, give back to a cause, be connected with the community, get a reference, build your resume, keep busy and live a longer and healthier life,” said Volunteer Fair organizers in a news release. So, come on down and meet non-profit organi-

zations to hear about the work they do, and the volunteer opportunities available within their organizations. Potential volunteers can pick up a Volunteer Passport at the fair from the Campbell River Volunteer Society booth. After speaking to four agencies at the fair they can enter a draw to win prizes. Learn food canning techniques The Black Creek Community Association’s (BCCA) Fall 2011 Activity Guide has arrived in mailboxes and is now available. The guide features an array of classes, workshops and events for people of all ages this autumn. The Campbell River Community band is starting its fall season on Wednesday. Rehearsals are held at 7:30 p.m. in the Carihi band room. The 30-member band was founded 15 years ago by its current director, Céline Ouellette. Under various directors it has continued a tradition of concerts and competitions, including the National Music Festival where the band won a gold medal in 2005. This fall, the band will be working on a variety of autumn themed music for a November concert. New members of any age with some band experience are always welcome, and should contact Celine Ouellette at 923-6844 in advance so she can prepare a folder. There is no audition, and committed players with a wide range of ability and experience enjoy playing in the band. Band members pay a modest fee to cover rental of the band room and purchase of new music.

As the two get to know the sleepy island community, they’re surprised to discover that Derek may have been in on a drug deal, but why? Others in the community describe him as a decent young man with a good head on his shoulders-what could have possibly pushed him to deal in drugs? Kyra and Noel are determined to find out what circumstances could have drawn this happy family into such dark territory. Classical music aficionados in Campbell River are in for a treat this year at Trinity Presbyterian Church. On four Sunday afternoons from September until March, music presented by a group of outstanding artists will fill the rafters of what is considered to be one of finest venues on the North Island for intimate chamber concerts. The series is hosted by p i a n i s t S a r a h Hagen, who is thrilled to have Laura Karney, Chad Louwerse and Megan Skidmore bring their supreme musicality to Campbell River. The artists, all known for their perceptive, eloquent and entertaining commentary, will take time to offer personal insights into the music. The series opens with Laura Kar ney on oboe and English horn. Currently residing in Barcelona, Karney’s free-lance career has so far spanned 13 countries across 3 continents. She has played with Alar m Will Sound, Cosmopolitan City Orchestra, Peconic Chamber Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, the Südwestdeutsche

The second concert features pianist Hagen in a solo programme which will include Chopin’s 24 Preludes and Beethoven’s Les Adieux sonata. “A rarity of musical excellence, technical ease and tonal purity,” Hagen is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician, performing in concerts across Can-

ada as well as in the United States, France, Italy, Ger many and Sweden. For the third concert, audiences will be treated to the intoxicating voice of Chad Louwerse, bass-baritone. Louwerse debuted in Europe with l’Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg as Bernadino in Berlioz’ Benvenuto Cellini and in Canada has been heard from Quebec to

British Columbia. He is a winner of both the CBC Westcoast Performance Pacific Spotlight competition and the Début competition and has given recitals broadcast on CBC Radio Two. The season closes with soprano Megan Skidmore, who has had outstanding success in numerous operatic productions, including the roles of Cunegonde in Candide with Opera McGill and Josephine in HMS Pinafore with McGill’s Savoy Society. Born and raised in the Comox Valley, Skidmore char ms audiences with her exquisite tone and captivating stage presence. Her lieder interpretations have been lauded as “intelligent and deeply heartfelt.” Mark your calendar for this exciting series. Drive Smart BC 2XFULL The Good Samaritan Virtually every crash scene that I attended during my policing career featured at least one good samaritan. These were people who stopped TYEE to help CHEV another in a time of need, often at some risk to themselves. This kind of selflessness is encouraged with protection granted by law in British Columbia. The Good Samaritan Act protects a lay person who is providing emergency aid to injured people at an accident scene. The protection applies unless the rescuer is grossly negligent in their actions. Gross negligence is any action or an omission in reckless disregard of the consequences to the safety or property of another. However, before you jump in to help at the next collision, remember that unless you have first aid training and know what to do it is best to do the least necessary to preserve life and prevent worsening of the injury. Paramedics are quick to caution that it is very easy to do significant damage instead applying treatment. If you have access to a cell phone, a 911 call will provide expert guidance from paramedical personnel if you are willing to remain connected and provide accurate information. Following this guidance will produce the best outcome for the injured. Should communication not be available, be cautious so that you won’t make a bad situation worse and need the protection of the Good Samaritan Act. It is with heavy hearts that the family of Peter “Pete” Bowers conﬁrm that Pete died tragically in the beautiful waters of Carrington Bay, Cortes Island, on August 26, 2011. Pete was born in Ontario, but he was a long time Campbell River resident who loved good times and good friends. He loved to play his guitar and enjoyed bringing a smile to the face of anyone he met. Pete was a carpenter, a musician, a son, brother, uncle, father and friend. We will miss his sense of humour, his carefree spirit, and his genuine love of life. Pete leaves to mourn; his mother, Madeline, his son Jason, and his seven brothers Douglas, Larry, Randy, Gordon, Billy, Rob, and Donnie. Peter did what he loved…and loved what he did. Laurie Dawn Andrews

January 14, 1953 - August 26, 2011 Laurie Andrews -- beloved Mother, Nana, Sister, Friend -- passed away in peace, surrounded by loved ones, at her home in Campbell River on August 26. Laurie inspired all with her hope and courage as she continued to live a happy, full life despite a cancer diagnosis in June 2009. She fought this difﬁcult battle with determination and grace, and she never gave up. Her bravery and strength made her a hero for many. Laurie grew up in Victoria and moved to Campbell River in 1978 to raise her family, which was always the most important thing in her life: Above all she was a devoted mother, and also became a most loving grandmother. Laurie loved reading, live theatre, relaxing near the ocean, adventuring with her best friend, and laughing with her family. For many years Laurie was actively involved in the River City Players, working behind the scenes or shining brightly on-stage. She worked for over 20 years at the local Scotiabank, greeting all of her customers with a smile. She also became a member of the Campbell River Center for Spiritual Living as part of her journey towards healing and understanding. Laurie has gone to join her parents Olaf and Olwen, sister Marilyn, and brother-in-law David. Left to love and remember her are her children Shawna (Bill), Chelsey (Keegan), Joel, and Crysta (Micah); grandchildren Kai, Bryelle, and Charlotte, and two more grandchildren expected soon; sisters Arlene (Allen), Glenys (Irven), and Kerry; best friend Diane (John); ex-husband Don; mother-in-law Doreen; brothers-in-law, Derek (Cheryl), Dennis (Ruth), Patrick, and Michael (Vicki); sister-in-law Rosemary; and many nieces and nephews. We will always remember Laurie’s caring heart and gentle spirit. All who knew her have been inspired and taught by her never-ending capacity to love. We love you, Laurie -- always and forever. INRIG, Bruce Douglas Following a life well lived; it is with great sadness the family of Bruce Douglas Inrig announce that he has taken his final flight and passed away peacefully on September 04, 2011 surrounded by family and friends following a brief illness. We are all grateful Bruce lived a full and wonderful life. Predeceased by the love of his life and wife Caroline Elizabeth “Betty” on April 30, 2003, Bruce is survived by and will be sadly missed by his sons, Doug and Scott (Glenda) and daughter Anne (Charlie) as well as his grandchildren Tyler (Nickie), Krista (Jon) and Bryan (Deirdre), along with his great grandchildren Kristian and Alli and many nieces and nephews, who will all miss his love and support. Bruce was born in Hamilton, Ontario on November 15, 1920, the youngest child of James and Catherine Inrig. Bruce is predeceased by his 5 siblings. Bruce joined the war effort in 1940, training as a fighter pilot. He left the air force in 1946 when he joined the federal fisheries. He “re-upped” to the air force to fly jet fighters until his retirement from the forces in 1964. He then started his new career in the logging industry, first as a scaler and then bullbucker, working for Canfor at Nimpkish and Vernon camps until his retirement in 1985. A gifted carpenter/finisher, Bruce set to work on he and Betty’s retirement home at Cape Lazo. Built primarily with wood milled from the Alaskan sawmill and shakes from the North Island it was a labour of love and quite an accomplishment. A “take charge” type of man, Bruce was instrumental in the construction of the Air force Association 888 Wing building, served on the Wing executive and was still volunteering his carpentry skills for the association right up until he passed. Bruce loved and was good at hunting and fishing - still hunting at last year’s successful moose and deer hunting trip. All who hunted and fished with him loved to hear his many well-told stories. Bruce was an excellent shot once being the Alberta skeet shooting champion. Bruce’s memory was amazingly sharp. He could accurately tell you the time, date and name of all involved in his many stories. His family loved to hear him sing his funny songs and tell his descriptive stories at various reunions. He was in his glory last summer at his 90th birthday celebration surrounded by his family and friends. Bruce was fortunate to be able to travel to most parts of the world during his retirement and was still traveling a few months ago to play his favourite game “Let It Ride” in Reno. The family would like to thank Bruce’s many wonderful friends, including but not limited to his many friends at the Wing and Legion. Also thanks to the emergency staff, Palliative care nurses at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Dr. Douglas Anderson for their compassion and professional care to Bruce. A celebration of Bruce’s wonderful life will be held Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Air force Association 888 Wing, 1298 Military Row, Comox, BC starting at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests with thanks that donations be made to the Air Cadets 386 Squadron, Royal Canadian AIr Cadets c/o 888 Wing, P.O. Paper has established a scholarship for the most well-rounded student, as selected by faculty, graduating from the Electronics Core certificate program. The recipient must be proceeding into the Industrial Automation diploma program and have excelled academically and with handson projects, as well as demonstrated leadership in the classroom. The scholarship will be first awarded in 2012 and is valued at approximately $3,000, which will cover both tuition and textbooks. Both programs are offered at NIC’s Campbell River campus. According to Don Gillingham, NIC’s Dean of Trades and Technology, students are the primary beneficiary of this exciting donation. “We are extremely grateful to Catalyst Paper for their support of our current and future electronics students. The equipment donation will further enhance the training of our Industrial Automation students by enabling NIC instructors to create additional hands-on, real-world industrial control projects, while the scholarship to assist an Electronics Core graduate to advance to the second level of study is a clear indication of industry’s need for highlyskilled individuals to operate today’s technologically-advanced workplace.” Rick Anglin, Catalyst’s Site Manager at Elk Falls, could not agree more. “Our primary motivation for the equipment donation and in setting up the scholarship is to ensure that we continue to address the skilled trades shortage – that we grow our own workforce.” In fact, it is Anglin’s hope that the scholarship recipients end up working on one of the Catalyst Paper mill sites upon graduation. Donated backpacks of school supplies ease back-to-school strain About 80 students in Campbell River will receive a nice surprise in time for the new school year – a backpack filled with basic school supplies they likely would not have been able to afford otherwise. Earlier this summer, local TELUS Community Ambassadors gave 80 school bags filled with supplies to elementary, secondary and alternative schools in Campbell River, which will distribute them to students in need. Across Canada, nearly 9,500 students will receive a kit this fall, thanks to the

TELUS “Kits for Kids” program. This year, TELUS Community Ambassadors in Upper Vancouver Island rolled up their sleeves and prepared 80 school bags for young students in Campbell River, filling them with the necessary school supplies for each grade: pencils, glue sticks, notebooks, loose leaf paper, scissors, erasers, pencil cases, rulers, and much more. This initiative was part of the TELUS Day of Giving, an annual event during which TELUS team members from across Canada donate their time and

help local organizations. “Going to school in September is a challenging time for many young people. They don’t need the added strain of not being able to afford the basic school supplies all their friends have, not to mention the impact that can have on their ability to learn and grow. They deserve the same chance as every other student, and we’re determined to provide it to them,” said Gordon Cromer, President of TELUS Community Ambassadors in Upper Vancouver Island. “TELUS’ Community Ambas-

Strathcona Triathlon Club member competes at Beijing World Championship 15-hour-a-week training regime

Strathcona Triathlon Club member Sandra Milligan is off to Beijing, China to participate in the Triathlon World Championships.

The International Triathlon Union will be hosting the Triathlon World championship in Beijing, China on Sept. 10-11. Campbell River will be represented by Sandra Milligan, a member of the Strathcona Triathlon Club. She will compete in the age group Olympic distance event on Sunday. Milligan qualified to race at the world championship level in Kelowna at the Canadian Triathlon National Championships in 2010. She will compete at the Olympic distance which is 1500m swim, a 40k bike and a 10 k run. The Beijing event will be held on the same course as the 2008 Olympic triathlon competition where Canada’s Simon Whitfield won a silver medal.

Milligan said that she has been training hard for this event. “I train about 15 hours/week, with at least three workouts for each of the swim/bike/run and then yoga, weights and core exercises to stay limber and balanced,” she said. Milligan’s children are bemused by her workout regimen. They do not understand why mom would want to get up at 5 a.m. to do a three-hour workout before they get out of bed. However Milligan’s children along with her sister and nephew from northern B.C. will be in Beijing to cheer her on. Rage against the Storm

Campbell River hockey product Jason Wark was in Grande Prairie, Alberta last Saturday in the Dawson Creek Rage exhibition game against the (Grande Prairie) Storm. The Rage is the only Canadian team in the Junior A North American Hockey League. The Storm play in the Junior A Alberta Junior Hockey League. Wark is one of two Campbell River players on the Dawson Creek team. Zac Ashdown is the other.
