Chopper story inspires artist to help Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society Local Artist Brian Scott has donated a beautiful painting of Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) to help raise funds for wildlife. Titled Mnt Avery Rescue from Helicopter, the painting depicts a photo of an overhead view of the wildlife center taken in 2005. The original photograph can be found on MARS’ website and in their brochures. It was taken from a helicopter that helps to transport wildlife for many rehab centers in the region and Scott was inspired by the unusual story of the photograph. The helicopter crashed in a field adjacent to the wildlife centre, just after the photo was taken. Fortunately, the pilot survived his extensive injuries, although his helicopter was beyond repair. He is now flying again in a newer R22 and has completed many missions for MARS since. Prints made of this painting are now available from MARS this holiday season to help the wildlife

MARS is in need of funding to secure the future of their wildlife rehabilitation centre, located in Merville. This mainly volunteerrun organization has been accepting wildlife calls from the north end of Vancouver Island for over 17 years. They average from 300 to 500 cases each year and receive at least three times as many phone calls requesting information
on wildlife issues. The centre rescues over
a strain on their resources. Recently they released five juvenile eagles in one day. MARS cancelled their Harvest Banquet and Auction this year due in part, to poor attendance and intense competition in a slow market. Although the banquet, cooked with food donated by local farms is popular, the auction was getting very few bids on the art and gift items generously donated by local businesses. As this was the society’s main fundraiser of the year, the funds have been greatly missed. “This year,” says wildlife rehabilitator and manager, Maj Birch, “we invite our
supporters to attend our ‘Non-Event.’ Log into our website where you will not need to get dressed up, go Cont. on Page 4

North Island Gazette’s Hamper Fund has grown to the point where hundreds of less fortunate families depend on it to help them through Christmas. It was 31 years ago when roughly $3,000 was raised through the inaugural efforts of the Hamper Fund, then known as the Gazette Christmas Fund. That money helped about two dozen families have a better Christmas. Times have certainly changed, and not for the better for many on the North Island — this year nearly 600 families and individuals need the help afforded by the Hamper Fund; that’s almost exactly 100 more than in 2010. The Hamper Fund doesn’t put extravagance under the tree, but it gives Cont. on Page 5

MARS has Christmas gifts From Page 8 out, or worry about a designated driver. With a donation to the charity, you will receive a tax receipt and a matted copy of Scott’s print (a $30 value) as a thank you for your non-attendance and get the satisfaction of knowing that you have supported MARS in ‘Helping Wildlife Recover.’ There are also gift items, including the Brian Scott prints, listed on their web page under Christmas Gift Giving Naturally. Some of the prices have actually
been lowered, so please check with us for the new prices. We have some wonderful bald eagle head chocolates available from Hot Chocolates, also. Visit www.wingtips. org or call 250-3372021 to purchase a raffle ticket, featuring a beautiful print by Mark Hobson, a picnic backpack, including a wine kit from Grape Expectations, or a beautifully designed sweatshirt by Dianne Pollock, paired with a couple’s Spa experience on Quadra Island. Also available are MARS Xmas cards,
birdhouses with suet balls, and cute little stuffy bald eagle key rings. They also have a site on CafĂŠ Press (www.cafepress.ca/ marscomoxvalley) where you can order t-shirts and other gift items with local wildlife themes, including a wonderful bald eagle design by artist, Robert Lundquist. Or, for the animal lover on your list who has everything, consider a Wildlife Sponsorship or Animal Release viewing certificate, available in several denominations.
Bids taken on gingerbread houses The 10th annual Boys and Girls Club Gingerbread Village opened last Sunday at Crown Isle Resort. Attended by sponsors and participants of all ages, the gala included food, a festive atmosphere, and beautiful music by local singer-songwriter Joey Clarkson. Those in attendance had the first opportunity to see this year’s fabulous gingerbread creations and specially adorned teddy bears. Entries
were judged and ribbons presented to the winners during the festivities. Three Little Pigs by Bruce and Wendy Calder tied for first with Penguinville by Brent Dillon and Jade Cohen. The top children’s entry was Candy Castle by Brooklyn Elementary and the best bear was Ballerina Bear by the Smart Foundation. For pictures of this year’s display, search Boys & Girls Club
Gingerbread Village on Facebook. The Gingerbread Village is a long time holiday tradition for many in the Comox Valley, a great way to get in the spirit of the season! Creations made of gingerbread, icing and candy (among some other very creative materials!) include traditional houses, a long house, entire villages, even a replica of the gazebo at Crown Isle. Each item is
laboriously assembled, decorated and refined and donated to the Boys and Girls Club for the public to view and bid upon through silent auction.
Successful bidders take possession on Dec. 18, plenty of time to display to decorate their homes or offices for the holidays. Cont. on Page 6

Hamper Fund delivers merriest Christmas possible From Page 4 more than just the basics. “Hampers are put together with knowledge of the age and sex of each child so that what is available may be distributed equitably ... (and) for this reason the most useful donation to the fund is money,” read the 1981 North Island Gazette story, the year of the annual drive. That’s one thing that has not changed — along with toys for the children, hampers contain all the fixings for a traditional Christmas dinner, plus a little more. The North Island has a great history of pitching in to help and so far this year many individuals and companies have stepped up to lend a hand. As well, many volunteers have been working tirelessly gathering foodstuffs and putting together the hampers. Soon numerous
Samaritans will be busy throughout the North Island, delivering hampers of food and gifts and
more than just a little good cheer with the hope everyone can have the merriest Christmas possible.

FISHING CORNER
It doesn’t matter if you are fishing in Campbell River or Victoria, the main fish anglers are going after are the winter springs and bottom fish. Lots of undersized springs are being caught in the south and have to be released. If you can find the bait, you may hook into a larger spring. Lures of choice are Coyote spoons and Hoochies in purple or green. The once popular Lucky Louie plug is still being used in the north, but this plug is quite often used in the Campbell River area during the; peak fishingg months during summer summer. De Denman Island is a fishing haven this time of year in the Courtenay area for winter sp springs. If crabbing is something you want to try, Tribune Bay has been producing for the Tr fisshermen. Isfeld’s Grasstronauts lift off Lindsay Chung Black Press COURTENAY — Add occupancy sensors to the list of ways Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School is taking care of the environment. Isfeld’s Environment Club — the Grasstronauts — received a BC Hydro Conservation Award worth $1,000, plus another $1,000 from the School District 71 facilities department and $1,000 from the school administration to place occupancy sensors in the school. The sensors will turn lights off when the space is unoccupied, as well as when there is enough light coming through the windows. “Kudos to you guys; we wouldn’t even be having this conversation if it wasn’t for the work you did,” principal Bill Village told the club. “It’s pretty easy for us
Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School’s Environment Club receives funding from principal Bill Village (far left) and School District 71 energy conservation manager (sixth from left) to place occupancy sensors in the school. Photo by Lindsay Chung to support these things. My congratulations to you. This is money that’s going to be very well spent that we’ll
get further returns on.” The school will save money by saving energy and will also receive money for the
energy the sensors conserve through the school district’s Energy Rewards Incentive Program (ERIP),
which pays schools 50 per cent of their energy savings every three months, explained district energy
conservation manager McGregor. “It’s a really good investment in your school because of the
work you guys did,” he said. The occupancy sensors are among a number of interesting energy-saving initiatives going on at Isfeld. They’ve changed the lighting in the multi-purpose room to make it more efficient, and the school’s parking lot is the first lot in the Comox Valley to replace the old high-pressure sodium lights with induction lighting, which uses about half the energy to give off the same amount of light, explained McGregor. As well, physics teacher Jesse Pendak is working on getting a windmill at the school. Environment Club members Emily Peterson, Brandon Toone, Tatyanna Kurucz, Megan Lawrence and Kayla Swing were the Cont. on Page 13

E Club grows to 15 From Page 11 only members of the Environment Club last year, and they accomplished a lot. As part of the Energy Ambassadors program, they started Lights Out Lunches last year. Every Friday, they turned off lights and encouraged teachers to turn off their computers when they didn’t need them. They spoke to students at Valley View Elementary School about starting a club, and they were Eco Elves at Christmastime, giving out treats to classrooms that turned their lights off. “If you think of it, just us five have done so much, and that’s just five,” said Toone. “We’re like a green disease.” Isfeld was the top Comox Valley school in the ERIP last year. “At the beginning of the year, we were one of the worst and
used the most energy, and at the end of the year, we were the best,” said Swing. Peterson is really excited about the occupancy sensors. “At the beginning of last year, we had this idea that lights in the bathrooms were always needlessly on so why don’t we get motion sensors,” she said. “Hopefully that will give teachers inspiration to open their blinds,” added Lawrence. Isfeld’s Environment Club has grown this year to about 15 members. “One of the best things about last year is it was just the five of us and we accomplished so much,” said Peterson. This year, the club’s focus is its community garden which provides produce for the school’s home economics class, and it is working on a number of projects,
including making bird feeders, holding an upcycle craft fair and having an ugly sweater day to encourage people to wear sweaters instead of turning up the heat. The club is hoping to win a solar panel package through the school district as the school that saves the most energy, noted teacher-sponsor Chantel Parsons. When asked why she’s so interested in the Environment Club, Lawrence says “Why not?” “We live here, so we should take care of it,” she said. “Someone has to do it. We can’t just sit back and wait for someone else to do it.” “We can’t leave the world like this for other generations,” agreed Kurucz. Peterson says she’s involved because “it’s our Mother Earth.” “It sustains us, so we need to sustain it,” agreed Toone.

Knee strain common skiing injury
I
njuries to the lower leg have always been a problem for alpine skiers. In the early years of the sport, broken legs were one of the most common injuries. The twisting force generated by a fall would transmit up from the ski to the leg and break the lower leg bones, the tibia and fibula. The subsequent development of release bindings has been very successful in reducing the incidence of such fractures, but unfortunately has not afforded as much protection to the knee. This joint, with its associated ligaments, menisci and bony structures, currently accounts for approximately 30-40 per cent of all alpine ski injuries. The vast majority of knee injuries seen in alpine skiers involve damage to knee ligaments. These ligament sprains are graded from one to
