A new generation of Beautiful Africa Watoto, a holistic care program, initiated to serve the dire needs of Africa and her people, is presenting a brand new tour entitled Beautiful Africa: A New Generation. An evening of vibrant, original African music, dance routines and lifetransforming stories, it comes to the Comox Valley in February. The tour is a testimony of the new generation of leaders emerging out of Watoto. Established in 1994, the Watoto Children’s Choir has travelled

internationally as ambassadors for the millions of children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war and poverty. Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents. They live in Watoto Children’s Villages where they receive the care and nurture they need to grow up as productive citizens of their country. Today, Watoto is impacting the lives of more than 2,500 children who have been orphaned and abandoned. Watoto’s purpose is to rescue the vulnerable, raise them up to be leaders, so they can rebuild their nation. For this to become an ongoing reality, Watoto relies on the support of Canadians to sponsor a life and impact their future. Living Hope is a Watoto program that has

Both a journey and a saga Fishing Forks Over Knives is a new 96-min documentary film that can save your life and is offered free to everyone. It will be shown Monday, Jan 16, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at the Campbell River Community Center 401-11th Av. The movie is both a journey and a saga. It features two pioneering health experts who are not afraid to make waves. Dr. T. Colin

Campbell, Ph.D. Nutrition Biochemist Professor Emeritus at the Cornwell University, author of The China Study, and Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyne, Jr., M.D. Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Reversal and Prevention Program at the world renewed Cleveland Clinics Wellness Institute, Author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. A separate ground

breaking research was conducted by both physicians using whole natural food to fend off disease, peel off pounds, and also boost overall health. The idea of foods as medicine is put to the test. The story examines that most of the chronic degenerative 20th century killer diseases such as heart disease, Cancer, type 2 diabetes and obesity are foodborn and can be

controlled or even reversed by what we eat. Eye opening insights from luminaries such as Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. John McDougal and Rip Esselstyne, Author of “Engine 2 Diet” are also featured in the movie. In the foreword of “Forks over Knifes the planet-Bases Way to Health” Edited by Gene Stone, Drs Campbell and

Corner

with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com On Saturday, December 19th, Steven Fyfe from Courtenay returned from a fishing trip with his son Theo. When they got to shore, Santa greeted them at the boat launch in Campbell River and starting talking fishing. y of great g eat fishing aand were returning home The Fyfe’s had 2 days with a nice 10 pound w SSpring. Th This time of year, a lot of uundersized springs are caught, but this was a ca keeper. ke Th said that meeting Theo S Santa was more fun than fishing. S Santa had decided to m a scouting trip to make C Campbell River and had stopped in at the Big st Rock R Motel. Th time of year when This the th fishermen get their presents, they tend to p gather at various rivers ga in the area to tr try out their new gear. Tackle shops in both Campbell River and Courtenay have specialty items that can keep an angler busy in all months of the year. A fly tying kit is a great way to learn about flies and what fish are biting on. You can join a fly tying club or learn on your own. Kits are available in all sizes and prices but generally run between 80 and 120 dollars. I have taken a few people aside and showed them the basics of tying a specific simple pattern. This is a fun hobby suitable for all ages but some get bored and have no interest to learn, Concise Fly Tying Kit the alternative is to purchase flies in shops. At this time of year I would like to extend season’s greetings to all the readers of the fishing corner, fishing guides and people I have met on the river and on the various lakes in the this beautiful area of the fishing world. Coming up I look at fishing lodges old and new, some historical information from the 50s and I’ll keep you up to date with the fun sport of fishing in Campbell River and Courtenay.

DEATHS

With Sadness, the family of

Bridget Hogg (nee MacClymont) announce the passing of their much loved mother and grandmother on December 20th in Comox, B.C. Bridget was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Woodie, in 2009. She is survived by her three daughters, Elizabeth, Mary Jane (Dave) Brewster of Regina and Sue (Fred) Hesterman of Courtenay B. C. Five grandchildren, Katherine, Patrick and John Brewster, Bob and Tom Matheos as well as relatives in England and France. Bridget was born in London, England in 1922. At the outbreak of World War II, she joined the W.A.A.F. (Women’s’ Auxiliary Air Force), becoming a commissioned officer in 1940. It was during the war years that the young Section Officer met a Canadian Spitfire pilot whom she later married in London and joined in Canada following the end of the war. Over the course of their married life, Bridget, Woodie and their family lived in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, moving to Saskatoon in 1960. Bridget then moved to the Comox Valley in early 2010. Bridget joined the staff of the Saskatoon Public Library in 1965 and worked there until her retirement in 1981. Bridget was an active member of the Board of Governors of the Commissionaires, the Royal Canadian Legion, the United Services Institute, the Armisticians and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Anglican Church in four provinces. She was a lovely, well-read lady of generous spirit, strength and determination who made many friends (including those of the four-legged variety) and to whom family was allimportant. Interment will take place in Saskatoon at a later date following a private family service. For anyone wishing to do so, memorial donations to the Salvation Army would be appreciated. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Comox for their kindness and care. Mum, Gram, we love you and we will miss you.

Going to a good home? It seems I just can’t escape from the world of antiques, as much as I try. For a long time now I have thought of giving it all up, but to quote Al Pacino’s character Michael Corleone in Godfather III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” And so, after some fifty years as an Antique Dealer, Auctioneer, Appraiser and Canadian Antiques Roadshow Expert this shall be my last article for MidWeek as I try my hand at doing something else which no doubt will begin with the letter ‘A’. their common-orgarden variety objects. Remember, you are selling something inanimate - you’re not putting it up for adoption. Once it’s sold, it’s gone - and with it go any rights of ownership you once had. Perhaps that very sentimentality is the reason for the seemingly obligatory ‘tag-line’ of so many ads in the local paper and on notice boards in convenience stores; ‘...to a good home!’ Well why? What the heck has the state of my home got to do with the seller? Why the interest? Do you think the owner of ‘a good home’ will pay

more than someone less house-proud? What exactly is a ‘good’ home anyway? I fully understand why someone would feel that kittens and cuddly puppies may be in need of that seemingly elusive ‘good home’, but why for couches, garden urns and other sundry inanimate objects? Return those goods and in future go shop somewhere else.” Another commonly used tag which has always puzzled me is the insistence of ‘No Dealers!’ Why is that? Students get a taste of nightclubbing without the booze Last Sunday evening, over 220 Grade 12 students from the Comox Valley had a taste of nightclubbing – without the alcohol. GTN (Grade Twelve Night) was put on by Bridge Lounge owner Nicola Webb in response to an idea proposed by some Grade 12 parents. Very aware of the recent sad events

amongst the youth of the Valley, Webb had been considering a ‘dry event’ at her premises to give the youth somewhere to go where they could enjoy music and socialize with their peers. Approached with similar thoughts by Grade 12 parents Julie Watkins, Tracey McGinnis and Tara Laderoute, the idea took flight.

The result was a ‘dry’ evening at the Bridge Lounge on Fifth Street in Courtenay, for over 220 Grade 12 students. They danced to local DJs Joe and Gibson, Chiba and were entertained by rap artists Fatty Down and Lil Bit from Nanaimo. Tickets were sold in advance and all students had to show I.D. when purchasing

the tickets and at the door. A special licence was obtained to have a ‘dry’ event; ‘mocktails’, soft drinks and snacks were available for the clubbers. Much to the organizers’ delight, the event —which ran from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., went without a hitch and was very well received by the students. “It was a little worrying that the

students would respect the rules and that we could keep it exclusive, but the students responded very well,” Webb said. “It was great to have the help of the parents to screen the tickets sales and I’m looking forward to hearing more from the students as to what they want at the next event. “We have already pencilled in two dates

— Feb. 6 and April 1 — after checking the school district calendar to ensure there is no conflict with class days or events.” Julie Watkins, a Highland parent, added “It is the ageold complaint that youth have nothing to do at the weekends. We just wanted to give the Grade 12s an opportunity to have a club experience, which

they wouldn’t normally get until they are 19. “Equally important was for them to see that having fun isn’t reliant on alcohol or other stimulants. Music is a big part of youth culture; it is a shame that with the wealth of music in the Valley, they rarely get the opportunity to experience it in a venue other than outdoor concerts.”

Antiques: Sometimes clients adopt illogical phrases From Page 10 citizen is going to pay $150 for an item then what’s wrong with a dealer paying the same amount? The tags ‘No Dealers’ and ‘to a good home’ serve no purpose other than to minimize your chances of a sale. It’s arbitrarily discriminatory and not at all Canadian, eh? Over the years I have also noticed that clients tend to instinctively adopt illogical phrases when it comes to downsizing or selling their items. On the one hand I often hear, ‘If it’s worth that to you then it must be worth a lot more to someone else!’ and the even more baffling, ‘I won’t sell it

if it’s not worth much’. The latter makes me wonder silently, ‘Does that mean you only want to keep the worthless things?’ This is a phrase I hear more often than you’d think, ‘‘I have one exactly the same but it is not as old and it’s smaller, and mine’s made of wood not brass - otherwise it’s identical in every way!’ Closely followed by the ever popular; ‘You want how much? Well we had one of those but we put it in the trash because we thought it was worthless!’ (And that, dear reader, is why it really is worth paying for a professional appraisal.) As for age and value, I was recently

Another 2X5Happy Ford Country Customer GARF BAX #2 P/U AD

told by a client who wanted a clock appraised; ‘It must be an antique, it was my grandfather’s and he was ninety-five last year!’ Mind you, she completely forgot to mention that the clock was bought new only five years ago. Things are not antique by association, and age alone does not equate to market value. I am often asked by clients to advise them which antiques they should buy as an investment and my reply is: buy because you like the item and want to live with it. Don’t buy something simply because it bears a known name such as Tiffany, Royal Albert or Rolex. Spend your money and time on

research. Invest in knowledge, get down to the library, search the Internet, join a club and meet likeminded collectors. Above all else, invest in some good reference materials and spend some time learning about the subject which appeals to you the most. Don’t buy just because someone tells you it will appreciate in value because the consequence may not be as profitable as you had hoped. I’ll leave you with this story to ponder: A woman takes an aged oil painting and a dusty old violin to be appraised. After doing considerable research the appraiser tells her; “Good news,

you have a genuine Rembrandt and a genuine Stradivarius!” He then goes on to say, “Unfortunately Rembrandt was a terrible violin maker & Stradivarius couldn’t paint to save his life!” Tony Duke provides comprehensive appraisal services for Estate Planning, Down-sizing, Probate, Property Division, Insurance, Antique
