Scott Stanfield Black Press CUMBERLAND — The Vancouver Island Visitor Centre — that wooden, drumshaped building with the green roof on the Comox Valley Parkway — is scheduled to officially open to the public April 1, though it has been operating the past few weeks. The name morphed from its original moniker, the Vancouver Island and Coast Discovery Centre, to represent the entire region, though Comox Valley appears on the wood drum facing the highway and below the title at the front of the concrete building. “We wanted to

Will develop diagnostic tools for aquatic organism health
The BC Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences (CAHS) has hired Dr. Ahmed Siah as a research scientist and diagnostician. Originally from Morocco, he pursued his PhD studies in Oceanography at the University of Quebec at Rimouski (Quebec) and then spent three years of postdoctoral studies at the University of Le Havre (France). After an additional year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Atlantic Veterinary College (PEI), Dr. Siah was hired as an Associate Researcher and Adjunct Faculty at the same institution (AVC) in 2007. His research focused on the effects of contaminants such as antifouling compounds released in sea water on the health of shellfish, clams and mussels. More specifically, he aimed at understanding what could be the cause or causes of diseases that affect molluscs in their natural habitat and how mollusc health could be assessed. This is an exciting time at BC CAHS, says Dr. Afonso: “Dr. Siah’s research expertise is an excellent match with our organization’s mission and vision, and he will be able to
microorganisms and deal with the modifications of their environment (invasive species, ocean acidification, harmful algae and contaminants). He recently arrived from Charlottetown, PEI to settle down in Campbell River with his wife and their two young sons. Ahmed is an avid soccer player and is already an active member of the Campbell River Master’s team. He looks forward to exploring the outdoors in and around Campbell River, as well as welcoming their third child in a couple of months.
Dr. Ahmed Siah has settled into life in Campbell River after taking a position with the BC Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences. expand the services we provide to our stakeholders.” Thanks to his expertise in molecular biology, he will be mainly involved at the CAHS in developing molecular techniques to screen for microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria that affect health of fish and shellfish organisms. The molecular techniques that will be developed at CAHS will detect DNA molecules specific to the pathogens, similarly to the techniques used in crime scene
investigation (CSI). “I am so grateful to join the CAHS team and excited by the opportunity to be involved in the development of stateof-the-art diagnostic tools for aquatic organism’s health. My new position at the CAHS is an excellent fit in my career as an academic researcher,” said Dr. Siah. He is also interested in conducting research studies on shellfish and finfish health by understanding how the aquatic organisms defend themselves against the infectious

FISHING
It can’t get any better fishing in the morning and watching the Super Bowl in the afternoon. My first fishing trip on the salt this year was arranged by Harry MacDonald who has been guidingg in the Campbell River area for years. Harry had arranged that we meet at the boat at 10am on Sunday morning. When I arrived Pro Fishing Guide Harry MacDonald at the dock, a number of boats were gearing up and were heading out for a day of fishing. The sun was out, the wind was calm and the tides were right. Before heading out Harry checked to make sure I had a fishing license, showed me where the life jackets were located, went th oover the radio operations and sshowed me where the first aid kkit was. Explaining the safety features came first, the boat fe was w heated and we were off fishing. Our destination was the ouse The Lighth Lighthouse area where a number Li of undersized winter springs are caught. Harry said we would try another area and that if we hooked a fish it would be a keeper. When we hit the area of 500 feet of water a couple of prawn traps were set out and we would come back later to pull them up.. Harry was fishing behind Quadra Island and the fish finder was showing fish but we had no hits until later in the afternoon.. A ling cod hit the spoon but salmon were hard to come by that afternoon. Another Ling Cod Released boat that was fishing the area broke downn so Harry went over to pull up his prawn traps and assist the angler. This was a great opportunity to see the area that is heavily fished th dduring the prime fishing months in Campbell River. The fishing guides are concerned with safety, g kkeeping the guests comfortable aand catching fish for their clients. On your next fishing trip if you yo are a small group or large, Prawning a Plenty there th are countless numbers of guides in the area that are able to get you out on the water.

Snowshoeing is great fun, excellent exercise Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years. And, obviously, the art of snowshoeing has become more sophisticated over time – now it’s considered a winter sport. Modern day snowshoeing is made up of casual snowshoers who hike trails for pleasure, the snowshoeing enthusiasts who trek through the backcountry, and the competitors who race. In the past couple of years, snowshoeing has become one of the fastest growing sports in North America. Snowshoeing is a great activity.

Recreational hiking snowshoes are a basic selection and are perfect for firsttimers. Usually, these snowshoes work best on simple terrain that doesn’t require a lot of steep climbing or descents. Burger and a beer is cat’s meow

Black Press You’ll never feel better about buying a pint and a hamburger than you will on Tuesday. That’s when adults are invited to plunk down 10 bucks at Port Hardy’s Quarterdeck Pub for a beer and a burger, with the knowledge all the proceeds go to help the Cat’s Meow Society (CMS), a non-profit society that tries to bring awareness to the North Island community of the necessity to spay and neuter family pets. “All the money we raise, all of it, goes towards spaying or neutering cats in our community,” said Muffy Jones, of the CMS. “There are a lot of cats in our community and we don’t have an SPCA here so the municipal pound gets the animals, but they don’t have the same programs as the SPCA

goal is to establish an SPCA here,” said Jones. The money from Cat’s Meow is given based on a sliding scale of need, so some — such as low income, assisted people — may get more than others. “But we try and help everybody and the bottom line is the very least people will get is 25 per cent discount,” said Jones. However, not all pet owners take advantage
off the offer, and that leaves the CMS with another problem. “We are desperate for foster homes for cats,” said Jones. “If anyone is interested in fostering, please call me 250 949 7463.Quarterdeck Pub The beer and a burger event happens Feb. 21 from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Tickets are available anytime at Guido’s and at the pub the night of the event.

Lunar New Year event a soaring success On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Immigrant Welcome Centre’s many Multicultural Groups and Youth 4 Diversity Program teamed up to present a Lunar New Year Celebration. Participants rang in the New Year with a Buddhist ceremony, lead by visiting Reverend Monk, Sakya Phap An. Reverend Phap An brought a statement of hope and renewal to share with ceremony attendees from Venerable Thich-Thien-Nghi, rector of the Unified Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation in Canada. He urged those assembled to celebrate the New Year to leave behind old attachments and
hardships as we move into the New Year: “Buddha once said: All human beings have undergone the sufferings of daily life. To reach genuine liberation we have to forget all the afflictions and hardships of the past. Therefore, we… mourn about our misfortunes from the past and often think we [should] be able to get whatever we dream [of] in the future. These wandering thoughts are unreal and are the causes of our afflictions and depressions. They are delusion and attachment…. Without attachment, everyday would be enchantment and delight and then we [would] really obtain true happiness in this suffering world.” The event was

attended by about 200 hundred members of the Campbell River community and was co-organized by volunteers who created a huge dinner and transformed the Robron Centre Library into a Buddhist Temple. Throughout the evening, Reverend Sakya Phap An distributed “Lucky Money” to children, volunteers and many others as the evening progressed in a whirlwind of music, good food, good company and laughter. The Lunar New Year event was coorganized with our Youth Interfaith Project through the Youth 4 Diversity Program. Youth attending the event were encouraged to take photos and write about their experience.

or the fourth year, London Drugs is supporting the powerful Pink Shirt Day campaign with the official Anti-bullying Pink Shirt Day shirts available at all London Drugs locations. The net proceeds from the $9.80 T-shirt directly support local Boys and Girls Clubs in communities across Western Canada. Boys and Girls Clubs foster self-esteem, social engagement, academic success, inclusion, acceptance, respect for self and others, and connection to community - all key elements of bullying prevention. “We encourage everyone to take a stand against bullying and wear your pink shirt on Pink Shirt Day, Wednesday, February 29th,” said Wynne Powell, London Drugs president and CEO. “We are proud to be supporting the fifth annual Pink Shirt Day with T-shirts sales going directly to Boys and Girls Clubs in each community we serve, helping to foster local anti-bullying programs.” In 2011, London Drugs
raised more than $100,000 for Boys and Girls Clubs in Western Canada through the Pink Shirt Day Campaign. Pink Day T-shirts are available at London Drugs in both adult and youth sizes ranging from small to XXL as well as online at www. pinkshirtday.ca. Pink Shirt Day background: CKNW started Pink Shirt Day five years ago following an antibulling stand of two grade 12 Nova Scotia students. The students took action after witnessing a grade 9 student being bullied for wearing pink to school and encouraged their schoolmates to wear pink to send a message against bullying. Since then, CKNW’s Pink Shirt Day Campaign has sent a powerful message that Bullying Stops Here. In Canada, every seven minutes someone is bullied on a playground in Canada (www. bullying.org). A recent University of Guelph Bullying Study found that 50 per cent of Canadian school children report being bullied with 45 per cent of surveyed children feeling unsafe

when they go to school. Bullying is demoralizing, wrecks self-esteem and has led to shootings and suicides in Canada. Bullying happens in many different forms but its purpose is to make someone else feel bad on purpose. Through awareness and education Canadians can continue to take a stand against bullying. About the Boys and Girls Clubs Boys and Girls Clubs programs foster self esteem, social engagement, academic success, inclusion, acceptance, respect for self and others, and connection to community—all of which are key elements of bullying prevention. Boys and Girls Clubs proudly participate in Pink Shirt Day because it promotes awareness, understanding and openness about the problem and a shared commitment to a solution. BGC relies heavily on community support to deliver our daily Club programs. SNORING?
SLEEP APNEA?
Often snorers also have sleep apnea which causes being tired all day, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (per FDA website). Millions suffer needlessly and can stop their nightly ordeals.
To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in #23 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bed and have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully without gasping for air. A blessing. Suzie Weigel, 60, Chattanooga, TN No need to make claims. Bell relays 100% truthful user’s free speech. No money is paid for it. No questions asked guarantee.

Heartburn Reflux
The USDA now recommends to eat 50% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, salads, fruit). Health professionals suggest 80% alkaline food. Unfortunately, North American people eat 95% acidic food (meat, noodles, rice, bread, pastries, sweets, junk food). If you cannot change your diet to USDA’s 50% or closer to 80% alkaline food, consider to supplement with a natural health product that helps to increase your pH alkaline level close to a healthy 7. Ask for Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive, has no side effects and may eliminate the need for anti-acid pills many people take. As a bonus, an alkaline balanced body prevents many illnesses. See guarantee printed on box.
Reflux gave me a sore throat and I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice in singing again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 years I suffered a lot with acid reflux. I told all family members about #39 being all natural, giving quick relief and having no side effects. Michael Fasheh, 49, Port Ranch, CA Very happy with acid reflux relief. Last 4 years had increasing reflux despite taking anti-acid products. I am also trying to eat more alkaline food. Grzegorz Smirnow, 43, Mt. Prospect, IL Suffered with reflux, choking and coughing. After starting Bell #39 I feel great. Amazed about the complete relief. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. Katarina Tusa, 63, North York, ON Was sleeping sitting up to avoid reflux. I thought I had this health problem for life like my other family members. Bell #39 brought quick relief. Can sleep now normally, have more energy, feel great. Bell products are quite #39 different.
