The city is forecasting a $3.6 million budget shortfall for 2012, according to preliminary fig-

ures. That’s up substantially from the last estimated budget deficit of $550,000 back in December. The picture looks bleaker now because of a change in the prop-

erty assessment value of the defunct Catalyst mill site. The BC Assessment Authority announced early last month that Catalyst no longer meets the requirements of a major industrial property, and

has been reclassified as business/ other, which means a significant reduction in Catalyst’s property taxes. That decision results in a loss of $1.8 million in tax revenue for

2012. Included in the deficit is a $1.1 million tax shortfall carried over from 2011, plus a $1.3 million increase in costs related to contract commitments and inflationary increases, said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. If the city were to maintain the current level of services it provides to citizens, the tax rate would have to increase by 24 per cent in order to make up the $3.6 million. The loss of $1.8 million from Catalyst alone, equates to a 12 per cent residential tax increase. To put that into perspective, Ciarniello said a one per cent residential tax increase would bring in $150,000 in revenue for the city. That one per cent increase would mean roughly $12 more per year in property taxes for the average homeowner. The city’s operating budget is approximately $37 million which Continued on A3

Pole plant driving neighbours crazy KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A new log peeling plant on Duncan Bay Road is “inhumane” and driving neighbours away from their homes says Connie Cawley, who lives across the road from the operation. “It’s insane. It’s humanly insane to have to listen to this noise. You can’t escape it,” Cawley says. “It’s already driving people crazy up here.” Cawley, who has lived on the 4000 block of Duncan Bay road since 1989, is incensed the city allowed the log peeler operation to take up shop in an area so close to residential homes. Northern Pressure Treated Wood Ltd., based out of Ontario, purchased the lot at

5301 Duncan Bay Road last August and began operating at the site, which is zoned heavy industrial, on Jan. 23. The plant operates from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Company president Mike McCollough told the Mirror in October that the plant wouldn’t be very noisy once it was up and running. “We have several plants in the east and never had complaints with any of our neighbours,” McCollough says. “I’m sure they’ll be happy when the plant is running.” Cawley is far from happy. She says the noise from the peeler plant is “horrendous” and describes it as a “shrieking sound.” Cawley says a young neighbourhood girl compares the sound to

nails on a chalkboard. “It’s loud, I can be inside my house with the radio on and all the windows closed and I can still hear it,” Cawley says. The noise has already driven one lady out of her home in the Blue Spruce Mobile Home Park and is staying with a relative in Port Alberni, according to Cawley. The city says as of last week, it has received 41 complaints from Duncan Bay area residents regarding the noise. “We recognize that a number of residents are upset, even distressed, by the location of the plant and consider noise from the operation a disruption to life in the neighbourhood,” says Peter Wipper, city clerk. “We understand that having the noise reduced

is urgent for them.” In response, the city will require the owner of the plant to hire a consultant to come up with a noise reduction plan. Wipper says the plant is operating legally, with all permits and a business license in place, but the noise level does exceed the public nuisance bylaw and the owner will have to look into noise abatement options by Feb. 24. The owner has already built insulation and vinyl panels on the side openings. Still, Cawley says the city’s efforts are too little, too late. “The city didn’t do due diligence on this one,” she says. “I think it’s way past time for a study. That should have been done before and they should have gone

Drive Smart BC Winter Cycling What are the2X14 rights and obligations of 2X14 cyclists and motorists if the cyclist should choose to ride on the highway under snowy winter conditions? Should cyclists be using the streets in winter time? The legal answer to that question is yes, cyclists have every right to ride on the streets at any time of the year. In fact, they have the same rights and duties as the driver of any other vehicle on our highways. They must ride as closely as practical to the right side of the highway, which in winter may mean riding in the right side cleared track left by vehicle traffic. Expect to find cyclists using left turn lanes and crossing between them and the right side as well. What happens when a vehicle driver overtakes a cyclist in these circumstances? The answer should be obvious, treat the cycle as you would any other motor vehicle. Follow at a safe distance, pass when permitted and leave a generous safety margin as you go by. My major concern is that motorists will not grant the privileges that the cyclist is entitled to. Cycling in winter conditions is challenging enough without needing to contend with selfish drivers. Even though you have the right to cycle in winter conditions, discretion may dictate using another mode of transportation to preserve life and limb. As Christopher Warren lay dead or dying from a deep stab wound to his back, his common-law wife Linda Mitchell can be heard yelling obscenities during the 911 call made by his daughter. “She’s screaming. She’s using foul language,” said Crown prosecutor David Sissons, in closing arguments to the jury, in B.C. Supreme Court in Campbell River. The jury of eight women and four men began deliberations Thursday following We d n e s d ay ’s c l o s ing arguments by the Crown and defence counsels. After a four-week trial, they must decide if Mitchell is guilty of second-degree murder or not guilty due to selfdefence or reasonable doubt. The jury may also consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. Mitchell, currently free on bail, limped into the courtroom, using a metal cane for support. Her long and wavy dirty blonde hair was pulled back from her face and tied with a pink elastic. She wore black snow boots, jeans and a black jacket, and listened quietly during the closing arguments. “There are two theories,” said defence lawyer Doug Marion.

“The fact is...the Crown doesn’t know. At this stage in the trial we’re supposed to know and we don’t.”

April 2, 2010 At trial, Mitchell testified she did not remember stabbing Warren, only recalling a “flash of metal.” In his summation, Marion claimed that a drunken Warren was beating on Mitchell’s head with the telephone handset when he was somehow stabbed in the middle of the back with a kitchen knife. It was almost 4 p.m., on April 2, 2010, when the blade was plunged 9.5 centimetres deep into Warren’s lung. He died shortly later in the apartment he shared with Mitchell at 645-9th Ave. The Crown contends Mitchell has never admitted to striking the “killing blow” and has repeatedly dodged questions about that fatal day by using “selective recall.” “She doesn’t want to be responsible for doing such a terrible thing,” Sissons said. “She is prepared to lie to mislead you.” On Wednesday morning, Marion told the jury that Mitchell “saw stars and was not herself ” after Mitchell beat her with the phone. As a result, she may have suffered a concussion which, combined with

heavy alcohol consumption over two straight days, led to her fragmented memory of the events. Mitchell was arrested at the apartment and spent six days incarcerated in the local RCMP cells. During this time she testified that she suffered from severe headaches, but was never attended to by a doctor. The Crown countered, indicating Mitchell never once asked for a doctor and never showed signs of any head trauma. She was attended to by a paramedic, and Sissons suggested her headaches could have been the result of a hangover, plus she was not taking her regular medication. After her ar rest, Mitchell also told an investigator that the blood found on her hands was her own when, in fact, DNA evidence showed it was Warren’s.

The Altercation What led to the altercation was not disputed. Both Mitchell and Warren drank regularly – he had a blood-alcohol level of .235 at the time of death – they had been drinking beer, and perhaps moonshine, early that day when she became enraged. Mitchell could not find her bank card or keys and accused War-

ren of losing them. In a fit of anger, she called his mother who advised Mitchell to contact the proper authorities. But immediately after the call, the mother contacted Warren’s adult daughter, Erin, and asked her to go to the apartment to check on the couple. When Erin Warren arrived with her roommate, Nikki Barton, they found War ren bleeding profusely and near death. They also saw Mitchell come out of the bathroom. She started yelling at them and wanted the two women to leave. But Erin could not find the phone to call 911. Mitchell said Warren had hit her in the head with the phone so she should ask him where it was. Erin wound up using a neighbour’s phone and on the 911 recording, Mitchell is clearly heard raging and screaming obscenities. Barton also testified that Mitchell knew that Warren had been stabbed in the back. Police arrived at the apartment within minutes and found Mitchell in a much different state. She was curled up in a fetal position on a bed and appeared in a daze. That’s when, Sissons suggested, she started using the “can’t remember” story. “This is not someone ‘in a daze. She wants the girls out of there and she doesn’t want to do

anything to help at that point,” he said. In the few minutes between the mother’s phone call, the girls arriving and their 911 call, Marion said that Warren began beating Mitchell with the phone and had backed her into a corner in the kitchen. “He’s drunk, he’s angry...she’s terrified,” said Marion. “She’s drunk, she’s panicking...she’s entitled to defend herself.” He later added, “This is not a murder trial. At its highest mark, it’s a manslaughter trial.” But Sissons painted a different picture for the jury. He pointed to inaccuracies between Mitchell’s statements to police and her testimony during trial. “She did not plan this, but she intended to stick the knife in his back at that moment,” he said. Sissons also demonstrated how it would be impossible for Warren to self-inflict the fatal wound – a single penetration to the middle of his back with the point of the blade facing upwards. Warren never had any defensive wounds and neither did Mitchell. “In short, there’s no evidence of selfdefence,” Sissons told the jury. “This was a vicious act and I’m asking you to hold her accountable.” Watch for news of the verdict at www.campbellrivermirror.com

Transit fares are going up in April. City council approved rate changes last week that will bring transit prices up to par with other communities. Drew Hadfield, the city’s transportation manager, said a fare increase has been a long time coming. “The service has not had a review or adjustment in the fares for this service since 2004,” Hadfield said. “Typically, a fare review is undertaken every three-to-four years; therefore a fare increase is long overdue.” The city provides bus service in conjunction with BC Transit and Hadfield said Campbell River’s public transit performs at a high level compared to other transit services

in similar sized B.C. communities. As of April 2, a onezone ticket for an adult will cost $2, as opposed to the current $1.75. For seniors and youth (up to Grade 12) one zone will be $1.75, while the “children ride free program” will be extended to include kids up to age six. HandyDART fares will increase to $2.50, from $2 while children up to age six and attendants will be able to ride for free. “In g eneral, the Campbell River Transit System’s fares...are simply just on the low side when compared with its peers,” said Hadfield Fo r e x a m p l e, i n Nanaimo and on the Sunshine Coast, an adult cash fare is $2.25 while in Victoria, Mt. Waddington (North Island) and Powell River adult fares are $2.50. Under the new rate structure, the city also plans to eliminate the two-zone fare. Hadfield said the $2

Hadfield acknowledged it’s possible raising the rates could cause a drop in ridership, but said there are a few strategies that can be used to reduce that risk. He said transit could promise future service increases or improvements to justify the fare increases.

The community has one last chance to have a say in Campbell River’s future and to share its vision for the city. The city will hold a public hearing to review and comment on the Sustainable Official Community Plan on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The plan is designed to guide city council in shaping the community’s future and includes the master transportation plan, the agriculture plan, energy and emissions plan, as well as zonings and land use for neighbourhoods.

Ross Blackwell, the city’s land use manager, said the hearing is the last chance for people to put their mark on the plan. “The public hearing is designed to give the broader community the opportunity to appear before council and speak on any aspect of the SOCP (Sustainable Official Community Plan) draft they feel is important to them,” Blackwell said. “It can be on things they appreciate in the plan or on any changes they’d like to see, and anything in between. The public hearing is not intended to be a debate but an opportunity for council to listen to input from the community.” The public hearing will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.

Time to batten down the hatches Well, folks, time to batten down the hatches, the fiscal storm is about to hit. Or perhaps the more appropriate metaphor will be to tighten your We say: The Grim belts. Add to that a $1.1 million tax shortfall carried over from last year plus a $1.3 million increase in costs related to contract commitments and inflationary increases, according to Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. This is a far cry from the $550,000 deficit that a December report to council was projecting. That figure was based on the best-case scenario, i.e., the Catalyst contribution remained the same but that wasn’t ever going to happen, if not this year then certainly next year.

So, it means either a 24 per cent tax increase to maintain service levels or, as is most likely, a cut in services. Given that new mayor Walter Jakeway has prematurely promised there will be no new tax increase, we’re looking at significant cuts. This will please a portion of the population but are they really prepared for what that will mean? It will certainly reflect an uncommonly steadfast ideological belief on the part of Campbell River residents if this fiscal approach is implemented without significant wailing and gnashing of teeth. So, what are you willing to give up to forego a huge tax increase?

Whatever happened to level playing fields? I would like to ask city council what makes the “Special Commercial Area” so special that they are blessed with an overnight change in the bylaws allowing their already existing tax exemptions (50 per cent for 20092012) to be doubled to 100 per cent for the following five years? What has happened in Campbell River’s Business community in regards to free enterprise and level playing fields? Has it not occurred to any of city council (since they unanimously adopted the Downtown Revitalization Amendment Bylaw No. 3472 last Tuesday) that giving unfair advantage to one segment of the city’s business area is to the detriment of the businesses operating with that same city? As Mayor Walter Jakeway said, there’s something happening there” with this specific development proposal and it should be opened up to debate and full disclosure; including all of Campbell River’s business owners in the forum. Sunday’s Walk for Memory hit home for me because, well, I’m not as young as I used to be. None of us are. Although I like to think of myself as middle-aged, the likelihood of me living to 104 is pretty slim. You see, I was raised on the Scottish diet for the first 18 years of my life. I’m doomed. Vegetable? What’s that? Sunday’s event was a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. and included an appearance by the plucky Mae Noble who is the kind of person that you can’t help but cheer for. Mae has become our region’s spokesperson for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease which she and an alarmingly high number of her family are struggling with. And many across the country are.

It’s estimated that 500,000 Canadians are dealing with dementia. But aging is not necessarily about Alzheimer’s – it isn’t just a disease of the elderly. The talk of aging and dementia, which we all fear, has been on my mind, particularly after I attended a talk in the fall at the (appropriately) aging Willow Point Hall by Gary Anaka an aging specialist. It was entitled Brain Wellness – The Secrets for Longevity! Anaka has written a great little book that has become like a handbook on the subject. It’s called Brain Wellness – The Secrets for Longevity : Discover How to Maintain your Brain Plasticity for Life : the New Amazing Frontier of Hope. That’s what was great about Anaka’s presentation, it provided tips – a blueprint – on not only how

to forestall the effects of aging, but reverse them in some cases. It’s no big secret. It all comes down to the same health tips for any age: eat more fruits and vegetables; exercise regularly; stimulate your brain with good activities (Bach not Black Sabbath; crosswords not hours of sitting in front of the T.V.); and did I say exercise already? Anaka calls himself a brain coach and his presentation is certainly uplifting without being pseudo-cultish. It’s all science and it emphasizes how much we’ve learned about aging in the last 20 years or so (and how much more we need to know). There’s actually been a lot of practical information uncovered. Anaka provides 20 brain smart lifestyle choices to prevent aging and they’re

along the lines of my preview list above. Next time he’s in town – and I believe he will be brought back – you should go check him out. He’ll give you some tools to grow older gracefully. Anaka said and it was also mentioned at Sunday’s Walk for Memories that Canada is on the cusp of a dementia crisis and our health system is not ready for it. Baby Boomers are entering their senior years and the sheer numbers dictate that the incidence of dementia is going to be high. Tie into that the lack of knowledge we’ve had up until a few years ago about how to age wisely, we’re facing a big crunch. But aging doesn’t have to be about dementia so, excuse me, I’m going for a walk. Pass the celery.

Is city council blind to the fact that they are bleeding their own city’s businesses dry in order to try and give life support to a small portion of the downtown area? How is it possible that this is being overlooked? Some special interests are obviously being served here. Have none of the city’s councillors ever owned a commercial property? If not, have they ever entertained the notion of hiring business advisors (as the running of a city is essentially the running of a business) so as to foresee the ramifications which such nonsensical business practices as these produce? Did you truly not glean any business sense from the recent economic bailouts? It is a shame that part of the downtown core kept their leases high while not maintaining their properties but that was their choice under a free enterprise system. Bailing them out is most definitely giving way to special interests at the cost of those already facing down the struggles of trying to keep their own businesses afloat. If city council is open to giving tax incentives, those incentives should be open to all businesses. For example, of a business invests their own capital in improving their property, they could then submit their receipts for a 100 per cent credit of the balance, to be deducted from their following year’s commercial property tax. This would keep our entire community looking well-maintained as several business areas of Campbell River are in a poor state. One last thought: Mayor Jakeway was also reported as saying, “We had an initiative come at us right out of the blue since being sworn in.” Did any of the new council consider that perhaps their inexperience and eagerness to promote change may make them easily manipulated? Call for Expression of Interest From Qualified 2X4 Day Care Providers The Village of Port Alice has space available within the Port Alice Community Centre which could serve as a day care facility. The largest local employer, Neucel Specialty Cellulose, has identified a need within its employee base for day care services.

The Village Council has also recognised that the need for local day care services is a community priority and believes that this service will enhance the quality of life for families who live, or who want to live, in Port Alice. Accordingly, the Village is willing to offer space for day care operations at a nominal cost. There may be additional subsidies available to help offset operating expenses and reduce the cost for parents. Interested parties, who meet all of the requirements of BC’s Child Care Licensing Regulation, are invited to submit a proposal to the Village for the provision of Child Care Services, to be located at the Port Alice Community Centre. The specific hours, age ranges and user fees will be determined by the proponent, in consultation with the Village and other local stakeholders. The successful proponent will be required to provide liability insurance in the amount of $5,000,000 with the Village of Port Alice named as additional insured.

Hurricanes split Peoples Drug Mart and peoples Pharmacy Peewee Hurricanes had another busy weekend of hockey, hosting Peninsula and Nanaimo last weeekend. The Hurricanes dominated the first period Saturday at Rod Brind’ Amour Arena against Peninsula, with two unassisted goals from Martine Thompson and Cassidy Bellavance. However the girls seemed to get caught up in the aggressive play, allowing Peninsula to tie it up in the second period of the game. The Hurri-

canes fought hard, but an early third period goal from Peninsula ended the scoring for both teams and the Hurricanes came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 final score. S u n d ay ’s g a m e brought equal competion for the Hurricanes, but the ever persistent girls were not going to allow another loss. The Hurricanes remembered their core skills, making better, smarter passes. The Hurricanes’ Hailey Hunter found the net first with an assist from Bellavance. Nanaimo fought back and tied

the game up. But it was short lived, as both Bellavance and Hunter found the net, tallying two more unassisted goals for the Campbell River team and going into the second frame with a two goal lead. Nanaimo’s second goal of the game would be the only goal for either team in the second period of play. Hurricane Kylie Scammell’s first goal of the game at the 13 minute mark of the third remained the only goal for both teams in the last period of play, giving the Hurricanes a 4-2 victory.

A total of eight teams competed in the “Novice” Division with Josh Jensen’s Courtenay team taking first place. Taking the last four positions in the standings were the local teams skipped

by Madison Turgeon, D ay t o n B e l a n k o , Keaton Norton, and Isaiah Sheppard. In the “Experienced” Division a Nanaimo team, skipped by John MacDonald, defeated a local team, skipped by Alx Stoyles, to take first place. Stoyles took second with Qualicum’s Christine

Patterson’s team curling well enough to take third place. The curlers demonstrated great sportsmanship at all times and made many new friends. The local committee would like to thank all the parents for supporting their children by coming out and taking in the action.

Campbell River wrestlers excelled at their own tournament last Saturday, winning every single category. Carihi hosted the fourth annual Campbell River Invitational Wrestling Tournament which saw wrestlers from Carihi, Timberline, Phoenix, Southgate and the Campbell River Christian School take on teams from Port Hardy, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Ucluelet, Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo and Victoria. Team standings for all four categories were topped by schools: Junior Girls

– Phoenix; Junior Boys – Phoenix; Senior Girls – Carihi; and Senior Boys – Timberline. Phoenix’s Hailey Dean (51 kg) and Savannah Pare (60 kg) topped the podium with gold medals followed by second place Aden Lovely (43 kg), Kyla May (47 kg) and Kristine Osachuck (51 kg). Megan Nuttall (54 kg) finished third. Other top six finishers were Larissa Melville and Alexis Verschuur (47 kg), Gena Bannerman (54 kg), Amanda Anderson (60 kg) and Greta Hamilton (64 kg).

Southgate’s lone gold medal was awarded to Conlan Foy (41 kg) and the balance of the Junior Boys category was dominated by the Phoenix boys with golds for Dawson Jordan (48 kg), Michael Herman (54 kg), Duc Ngo (57 kg) and Denis Parsey (60 kg). One bronze finish for Petro Kindy-Olsen (70 kg) while Campbell River Christian School’s Adam Guilderson placed a solid second in the 60 kg division. HEWETT, James August 28, 1917 – January 29, 2012 Jim passed away peacefully at Campbell River Hospital, after living a long, healthy and active life. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Verna in 2002 and is survived by his children: Bill (Yvonne), Pat (Mel) Turner and Jim (Marje); his 7 grandchildren: Scott (Maggie), Kevin, Julie (James) Zinck, Laura (Darren) Patrick, Daniel, Mark and Alison; his 5 great grandchildren: Spencer, Gabe and Analeigh Hewett and Ella and Tyler Zinck. Jim was born in Newcastle, England and immigrated to North Vancouver with his family at the age of 3. He served as a signalman in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II where he met and married Verna. They built their ďŹ rst home in West Vancouver. Jim volunteered for many years with Scouts Canada and the West Vancouver Volunteer Fire Department. In his retirement years, he and Verna built a new home on Mayne Island and some years later, moved to Ladysmith. They enjoyed many years of sailing and traveling. Jim amazed his family with his energy, his work ethic, and his craftsmanship. His cheerful whistling in his workshop and the beautiful grandfather clocks he made, will be a lasting memory. There wasn’t anything that Jim didn’t think he could ďŹ x! The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Campbell River Hospital, as well as the caregivers who looked after him at home for the last few months. We will be making a donation to The BC Cancer Agency and the Campbell River Hospital Foundation in his name. Flowers are gratefully declined.

Norma Jean Papso It’s with great sadness that we share the untimely passing of Norma Jean Papso (nee Hunden). Norma was 69 with an upcoming birthday on March 12th. In her younger years Norma Jean was one of the Pink Ladies who loved to drive stock cars at the Saratoga Speedway, she loved to sing on the radio, and was proud to hold the highest ten pin bowling score at the Courtenay Bowling alley for many years! In her later years, Norma Jean lived in Sayward where she was employed by Canada Post as a mail courier. During this time she made many friends and never let the weather get her down. Norma Jean lived her remaining years at Stories Beach. During this time she provided care for her long-time partner, kept very close to her grandson, remained active in the community and concentrated on spending time with her beloved friends. Norma Jean will be missed by her long time partner Ted, her sister-in-law Sherry, daughter Robyn, Robyn’s partner Jonathan, grandson Zachariah, step children Laurie, Robert, and Valerie, Ted’s extended family as well as many friends. Norma was predeceased by her loving son Michael Dale Papso who passed away January 28th 1991. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Senior’s Centre at 1426 Ironwood Road Campbell River on Friday February 3rd at 3pm. Ernest (Ernie) Leonard Venus

July 15, 1920 ~ Calgary, Alberta January 27, 2012 ~ Campbell River, BC Ernie was predeceased by his loving wife Peggy of 69 years; and his daughter, Gayle. He is survived by his daughter, Linda (John) and son, Glenn (Shannon); his grandchildren: Lorri-Anne, Tricia (Curt), Meagan (Brett), Patrick (Alicia), Steve (Katy), Geoffrey and Shawna (Jason); as well as ten Great Grandchildren. Ernie was a man who enjoyed family, friends, conversation and a good laugh. Once discharged from the Army he spent 35 years working in the woods for his beloved MacMillan Bloedel. Starting at Northwest Bay in 1947 as a faller to Camp Manager of Menzies Bay Division where he retired in the fall of 1982. Stops along the way included three different occasions at Northwest Bay, Port Hardy, Franklin River, Iron River, Camp 5 and Kennedy Lake. Ernie enjoyed his work, took great pride and was most respected for his devotion to safety performance that improved in every location that he worked at. Ernie was a devoted Shriner, Legionnaire and Veteran. Our family is extremely proud of the man he was, as well as the impact he has left on us all. In this time of sadness we take great solace in the reunion of Ernie and Peggy. In respecting Ernie’s wishes there will be no service of remembrance. A Family gathering will be held at a later date. hirty young singers from the Campbell River Children’s Choir will be traveling to New York this spring to sing at the famed Carnegie Hall. After auditioning, the group of 12-18 year olds was invited by adjudicators to perform at the April Choral Festival. “The expectations are high,” said choral director Barbara Prowse. “The singers are expected to arrive with the music perfectly learned and ready to perform. The world class conductors will put the final touches on the music and then it’s on with the show.” The group will travel from April 11-17, with their April 15 Carnegie Hall performance featuring nine pieces of music – “everything from Mozart and Haydn to gospel,” Prowse said. In addition to preparing their music, which consists of a variety of styles chosen by the festival conductors, the group is busy raising funds for the trip.

The singers have already sung carols, bagged groceries, sold chocolates, worked out at Zumba, and collected bottles. The choir is hosting a fundraiser for the trip on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m., at Johnny’s Bar and Lounge. The semi-formal evening will feature and appetizer buffet, door prizes, a silent auction, music trivia, dancing and more. Only 70 tickets are available for $25 each. Tickets can be purchased at Johnny’s Bar and Lounge or Discovery Laser. The Campbell River Children’s Choir is a registered charitable organization which has been active for more than 25 years. The choir has previously performed at venues across Canada, the U.S., Great Britain and Cuba. “When you are performing on one of the greatest concert stages in the world, you have to be equal to the experience,” Prowse said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we intend to be ready and to make Campbell River proud.”

T he dra gons are expected to roar into Campbell River once again this summer. Campbell River’s two dragon boat teams, River Spirit and Bravehearts, have reunited to host the second annual dragon boat festival. Last week, the two teams made a presentation to city council asking for its support and the use of Dick Murphy Park. “We are here tonight to ask for your support once again in what we hope will be an annual event,” said Nancy Bryson, captain of the Bravehearts. “It is not only an opportunity for us to put Campbell River on the dragon

boat map but it gives us the opportunity to showcase our community to these visitors.” Last year, the Race the River regatta was “a resounding success” according to Bryson and attracted roughly 13 teams from Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, racing along a 350-metre long course through the estuary. Carole Dodds, captain of River Spirit, said this time around the dragon boat society hopes to attract as many as 20 teams, which translates to 500 people. The regatta will be open to all types of teams – including senior and competitive. Bryson said the plan

is, once again, to hold the event in conjunction with the city’s Canada Day celebration. The society has penciled in the regatta for June 30. “Since it’s the day before Canada Day this year, there may be the possibility that people would stay over to attend the best Canada Day celebration on the Island,” Coun. Claire Moglove said. Council agreed to help out with the maintenance of Dick Murphy Park, including power, garbage cans/ recycle bins and the city’s water truck. Terry Jacques of the Campbell River Dragon Boat Society acknowledged the city for all its help at last year’s

A drummer keeps all the paddlers in sync as each team fights to cross the finish line. In Campbell River, the dragon boat teams act as a support system. River Spirit is an-all female, breast cancer survivor team while Bravehearts is a co-ed team for people who have survived all different forms of cancer. “We support cancer survivors and show people there is life beyond cancer,” Bryson said. “We introduce people to living a healthier lifestyle.”
