Woman found guilty on lesser charge of manslaughter PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A wo m a n fo u n d guilty of manslaughter in the stabbing death of her common-law husband will be sen-
tenced March 16. Linda Mitchell, 53, had been charged with second degree murder after Christopher Warren, 55, died due to a stab wound in his back which punctured his
lung. On Friday, in B.C. Supreme Cour t in Campbell River, a jury of eight women and four men convicted Mitchell on the lesser count of manslaugh-
ter. Warren was found dead April 2, 2010, in the apartment he shared with Mitchell at 645-9th Ave. According to court testimony, the two had
been drinking when an argument and altercation ensued. Mitchell claimed Warren was beating her about the head with a telephone handset when she used a kitchen knife to stab

Teens arrested on suspicion of theft Three teenagers suspected of breaking into a vehicle were taken into custody early Monday morning. At 1:28 a.m., RCMP were called regarding three males stealing items from a Toyota Matrix parked near the intersection of South Thulin and Pinecrest roads. The suspects fled when they realized they were being watched, but half an hour later, a Mountie on patrol arrested three 17-year-old boys walking along South McPhedran Road. One of the youths reportedly was in possession of the items stolen from the Matrix. The teens were taken into custody and later released to their parents. The investigation into the theft continues.

Truck hauling poles to controversial pole plant involved in accident with neighbour’s vehicle KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
An accident involving a logging truck en route to a pole peeler plant on Duncan Bay road has neighbours calling for the operation to be moved out of their neighbourhood. A log hauler, owned by Buttle Lake Resources Ltd., was coming around the corner, near a home at 4851 Gordon Rd., around 4:15 p.m. last Thursday when it ran into trouble. The logs, roughly 90 feet in length and hang-
ing off the back end of the truck, nearly took out someone at the scene and sideswiped a car, according to a witness. Corinne Matheson, who lives next door to the owner of the car that was struck, said she thought she was going to die. “I was standing on the side of the road and those last two poles were coming straight for my head,” Matheson said. “If I had not ducked, it would have killed me. The truck would not stop until after it hit
Diane Matheson’s [her mother’s] car. There was a pilot car behind this truck and he did not radio him to let him know he was going to hit the car.” Matheson said her mom’s car was parked right outside her own driveway on the grass, well off the road. Matheson said she, her mom, and her husband were all outside waiting for a truck to come by as haulers had been using the route all day, breaking branches in her mom’s yard. The three were hoping to speak with the
driver the next time he passed by. “The previous truck load of logs ripped a lot of branches off D i a n e M at h e s o n’s trees and they were piled up in her driveway,” Matheson said. “She had to get out of her car and remove all the branches to go to town. Then she found out another truck was coming, so we wanted to get pictures of it.” Matheson said she was angry the truckers were using Gordon Road, a mostly residential street, instead of using the logging
roads, the Island Highway, and then Duncan Bay Road to access the pole peeler plant. “There are people riding horses up and down this road daily, children on bicycles and people walking their dogs,” Matheson said. “We wanted to talk to the truck driver and tell him to go around on the logging roads. “This is all related to the whole pole peeling plant fiasco. “Our neighbourhood is being destroyed by this pole peeling plant, which
Poles from a logging truck scraped the top of a vehicle owned by Duncan Bay Road resident Diane Matheson. The poles were being transported to a pole peeling plant that residents of the neighbourhood oppose.
Pole plant neighbours ‘tortured’ by ‘constant’ noise KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The site manager of the pole peeler plant angering Duncan Bay road residents understands his neighbours’ concerns and says a solution may be in the works. “All of us are trying to do our job and do what we can to work things out with everybody,” says Bill Boutilier, site manager of Northern Pressure Treated Wood’s pole peeler plant. Since the small plant began operating on Jan. 23, residents have been loud and clear that they want the pole peeler out of their neighbourhood.
Neighbours say the debarker, which peels the logs, emits a highpitch screeching sound that’s driving them crazy. “The constant sound is like your next door neighbour leaning on his car horn, it’s sort of like the Chinese Water Torture,” says Corinne Matheson, who lives nearby on Gordon Road. “It’s so constant it drives you crazy.” Tracy Deller, who lives in Blue Spruce H o m e P a rk r i g h t beside the plant, says the noise is “horrific” and many seniors who live in the mobile home park are suffering. “There are seniors here who have family

elsewhere and want to move but now no one can sell their mobile
home,” Deller says. “They’re trapped.” Boutilier says his
crew have put up vinyl strips in the doorway of the small, green
metal building, which encloses the debarker, and have insulated the walls with plywood, both inside and out. He says the crew of three who work at the plant were going to put up more vinyl but decided to hold off until an independent study into noise abatement options is complete. The city has requested the owner of the operation to hire a consultant to come up with a noise reduction plan because the noise level exceeds the public nuisance bylaw. Boutilier says he hopes the engineers, BKL Engineering out of Ontario, will come by sometime this week,
as the city requires a report by Feb. 24. However, it appears the measures already taken may be helping. During a site visit, Boutilier measured the sound of the debarker. Standing roughly 200 feet away, Boutilier’s sound measurement device showed the debarker was emitting noise about 10 decibels higher than a person speaking right beside the device. Boutilier also says a scaler from Sayward, who dealt with the plant when it was located at Kelsey Bay, noted the debarker sounds quieter now than it used to. Continued on A4

Plant: Property rezoned in 1998 Continued from A3
Plant origins Northern Pressure Treated Wood Ltd., based out of Ontario, purchased the property at 5301 Duncan Bay Rd. in August 2011, after the operation was forced out of its home in Sayward. The plant was leasing property at a log sort on Kelsey Bay when Western Forest Products bought the land, and needed the space the pole peeler was occupying. Boutilier says the pole peeler plant had to vacate by the end of September and there was a time crunch to find a new spot. He says the original plan was to purchase land at Menzies Bay but that fell through. “The owner had six weeks to find a place,” Boutilier says. “He talked to TimberWest about the old mill site but they’re still doing cleanup and it wouldn’t be available this year. He checked up by Willis Road but there’s nothing of any size up there. This piece was for sale (on Duncan Bay Road), so he met with the city and they were welcoming.” Peter Wipper, city clerk, said the owner of the plant had a business licence in place and a building permit was approved because the operation was in line with the current zoning of the property: heavy industrial. The property was re-zoned to be heavy industrial in 1998 and, despite a petition by local residents, the council at the time adopted the zoning that allows activity, such as the pole peeler plant, on the land. Wipper said the city understands the concerns of residents living near the plant, which is why the owner has been ordered to come up with a noise reduction plan. “We recognize that a number of residents are upset, even distressed, by the location of the plant and consider noise from the operation a disruption to life in the neighbourhood,” Wipper says. “We understand that having the noise reduced is urgent for them.”

No public access to the river trail near the BC Hydro generating station for five years. No vehicle access across the John Hart Dam to Brewster Lake Road for three years. Wounded victim recalls hit and run ‘Little guy’ needs help finding the coward who ran him down PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Even Brian Walters is surprised at how far he flew after being struck by a hit and run driver. “Wow. That far,” he says quietly, as he stands by the Campb e l l t o n c r o s sw a l k where the accident occurred on the night of Dec. 29. The 50-year-old knew he had been hit hard. The impact from the pickup truck broke two ribs, punctured a lung, smashed a femur, severely bruised a hip
and resulted in 10 stitches to his head. H e ’s s t i l l u s i n g crutches to get around, and last Friday he revisited the spot where the accident occurred: the marked crosswalk between the Quinsam Hotel and Petro Canada gas station, at the intersection of the Island Highway and Maple Street. He watches pensively as the vehicles speed by and then RCMP Const. Dave Dormuth walks out almost to the middle of Maple Street. “This is where you landed,” says Dormuth, who stands 10 metres away. Walters and the officer were back at the accident scene, along with media, to retell the story in the hope someone comes forward with information
that can identify the truck or the driver. “I was on the road screaming,” Walters remembers. “I’m a little guy…I didn’t need this.” Two nights before New Year’s Eve, Walters was heading to Walmart around 7 p.m., to buy coffee for his common-law wife, when he attempted to cross the highway at the well-lit crosswalk. It was a stormy night and raining heavily, and Walters admits he was “in a little bit of a rush,” but insists he did check both ways before crossing. He never saw the southbound pickup which struck him and sent him flying. Walters faintly recalls lying on the road in pain and seeing the driver slow down near
the Walmart, before driving away. “I’ve got a bone to pick with him, if I find the son of a bitch,” says Walters. “I want this individual dealt with in the way he deserves. We’re dealing with a coward.” Passersby quickly attended to Walters, but were unable to provide specific details about the pickup or even get a licence plate number. Walters was taken to Campbell River Hospital and later transported to Victoria General Hospital where he spent 16 days recovering. The accident has taken a toll on his both his body and mind, but he credits his partner for seeing him through the painful days. “She looks after me,”
he says. “If it wasn’t for her, I couldn’t even have a shower.” Const. Dormuth said the vehicle is either white or a light colour. It’s full-sized pickup and may have an extended cab. There should also be some damage on the front right side of the truck. “We’re hoping somebody noticed something,” he says. Anyone with information is asked to contact Campbell River RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

BC Hydro: Lengthy detour required Continued from A5
Hydro is working with Destiny River Adventures, which conducts river tours, to ensure their guides still have access, although there would still be restrictions from time to time. Further up General Hill, vehicle access to Brewster Lake Road and Elk Falls Park would be closed for three years.
Near the bridge, BC Hydro plans to erect a public information building and create more parking to give hikers access to the park and falls. To access Brewster Lake Road, Hydro is proposing a lengthy detour via the Island Highway and Gordon Road, or using the Iron River Road (the logging road bridge, downstream of the generating station).
2X5 2X5
“A traffic management plan has to be developed,” said Watson. In another project, se parate from BC Hydro’s plans, Campbell River Rotarians are proposing to build a suspension bridge over the Elk Falls canyon, just downstream of the falls itself. BC Hydro has created a draft plan site which maps out the project (see drawing on A4)
and it will be displayed at the next public meeting on Feb. 16, 3-7 p.m., at the Maritime Heritage Centre. “We’ve engaged the community as much as we can during the last four years and this is another opportunity,” said Watson. More detailed project information is also available online at byhydro.com/regeneration50 and by following the links.

Homeless man wants his bottles back KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Tim Rennie has spent years behind bars for theft but last week the tables turned and Rennie, now homeless, became the victim. Rennie, who spent two years in a Mission penitentiary for break and enter, as well as fraud crimes committed in Courtenay, was knocking on doors looking for bottles last Thursday when he thought he hit a gold mine. Rennie said the resident of a home on the Old Island Highway directed him to another location where he knew there would be an abundance of cans and bottles. “The fellow said he didn’t have any bottles but said he had a party house on Greenwood and in the backyard there were tons of bottles,” Rennie said. After making his way across town, Rennie, who was growing

tired, did not want to push his shopping cart full of bottles – worth about $50-$60 – up the hill so he left it at the bottom, at 12th Avenue and Greenwood. Rennie went around to the back of the “party house” and couldn’t believe his luck when he found another shopping cart already full of bottles sitting in the backyard. Rennie started down

Plus, he’s already on the RCMP’s radar. “I didn’t file a report because of my background,” Rennie said. “I don’t go to the police for help because I have quite the history.” Rennie has an adult criminal record dating back to 1974. His crime spree took off when he was just 14-years-old in Edmonton, where he grew up. With the help of his buddies, he stole a car and claims he kidContinued on A9

I phoned the bottle depot to see if anyone had come in. I walked up and down through the back alleys and hoped I’d see the bottles in someone’s backyard.” But no such luck. Rennie said he never went to the police because he felt it would

VILLAGE OF PORT ALICE Call for Expression of Interest From Qualified Day Care Providers
2X10
The Village of Port Alice has space available within the Port Alice Community Centre which could serve as a day care facility. The largest local employer, Neucel Specialty Cellulose, has identified a need within its employee base for day care services.
VILLAGE OF PORT ALICE
The Village Council has also recognised that the need for local day care services is a community priority and believes that this service will enhance the quality of life for families who live, or who want to live, in Port Alice. Accordingly, the Village is willing to offer space for day care operations at a nominal cost. There may be additional subsidies available to help offset operating expenses and reduce the cost for parents. Interested parties, who meet all of the requirements of BC’s Child Care Licensing Regulation, are invited to submit a proposal to the Village for the provision of Child Care Services, to be located at the Port Alice Community Centre. The specific hours, age ranges and user fees will be determined by the proponent, in consultation with the Village and other local stakeholders. The successful proponent will be required to provide liability insurance in the amount of $5,000,000 with the Village of Port Alice named as additional insured.

Our View
Energy issues not going away In 2008, when B.C. introduced its carbon tax, it was widely hailed as a model of environmental and economic design. Applied to the purchase or use of fossil fuels within the province, the We say: Impact tax rates were initially set at $10 tonne of CO2 (carbon dioxide) of the province’s per emissions, rising to $25 last July, and carbon tax is $30 per tonne this year. Motorists will be paying 6.67 cents of carbon debatable tax per litre this summer. The province committed that the initiative would be revenue neutral, with the money generated returned to taxpayers and businesses by way of tax
deductions. Now almost four years old, B.C.’s carbon tax is still the centre of debate. Has it been effective in its objective of reducing the use of fossil fuels? Stats Canada reports the consumption of gasoline in the province held relatively steady since 2008 and increased in 2010. In the global scheme of things, the impact of B.C.’s carbon tax on the release of greenhouse gases since its inception can be considered miniscule. But it has led to some positive changes in awareness and attitudes, with examples found in industry and civic infrastructure where energyefficient measures and alternatives to fossil fuels were implemented. In fact, while opponents call for
the demise of the carbon tax, calling it ineffective and unfair, proponents maintain it must continue to be ramped up to change bad energy habits. At present, the global consumption rate of oil is approximately 85 million barrels per day, and current trending sees that rising over 100 million barrels per day by 2020. If alternative energy sources are not vigorously pursued now, the world is headed for a worsening crisis. That makes for a strong argument that instead of carbon taxes being neutral, they should instead be funnelled directly into energy-wise initiatives, such as transit and other transportation alternatives. – Black Press

Don’t be shy about cuts It is alarming to belive that city staff would present the “best case scenario” to the public when forecasting budget projections. Now we seem startled to find out that the worst case scenario came about and we are millions in the hole. Our new council must show strong leadership and cut expenditures harshly to balance the budget. Campbell River already has one highest civic taxes in the province and and further increases will harm our chances to maintain our standing as a desirable community to live in. Already too many people are choosing the live in the surrounding areas. As a new resident to Campbell River, it was a hard decision to buy a home within the city limits when we factored in city taxes. Don’t push others away with crushing civic taxes. Please make the hard choices and cut services. This situation is a longer term problem in Campbell River and don’t take the optimistic view that we will increase our industrial tax base any time soon and dig ourselves out of this mess. Prince Rupert is a good example that it takes a long time to bounce back from loss of thier major industrial tax base. Only now are they seeing improvement with the development of the port. We do need a new hospital, we just don’t need two
Paul Rudan No, really
The leak was one of the many warnings that we need a new hospital. It was last summer and I was confined to the third-floor room, awaiting surgery, when nature called. The double room was nice enough and I even had my very own bathroom. But as I flushed, I could see water leaking from the pipe fittings. I buzzed for the nurse who quickly arrived – I have learned that all nurses on the third floor run during their entire 12-hour shifts – and I suggested she get maintenance up to the room pronto! But nurses, bless their hearts, have it ingrained in their collective makeup to always try and do their best. In this case, my nurse fiddled with the fittings for a moment...and then
ran for towels as the drip-drip leak turned into a small gurgling stream. As the many towels became saturated and the water advanced towards the bed – the electric bed where there were other electrical pumps for IVs, etc. – I contemplated my getaway without getting electrocuted. And then I thought about the 99-year-old woman recovering from hip surgery in the bed next to me. Fortunately, a maintenance man finally arrived that Sunday evening and quickly had the problem solved, thank goodness. But it was now entirely clear to me that old Campbell River Hospital must have all sorts of maintenance headaches, causing problems for everyone.
We do need a new hospital, but we do not need two hospitals. That’s the other conclusion I came to after speaking with dozens of nurses, a few doctors and other staff during my prolonged stay. Not a single one of them ever spoke in favour of the two hospital proposal: One here in Campbell River and the other in the Comox Valley. Unfortunately, the region’s hospital board continues pushing forward with planning to build a new hospital, right beside our current old building, and the other on Ryan Road in Courtenay. I can’t think of a worse and more expensive proposition. And, you know, I don’t put any faith in the petition signed by 19,000 upper Islanders who say they want two hos-
pitals. I have found that people “want what they want” but they rarely want to pay the enormous cost. We’re talking upwards of $700-$800 million! There’s never been, and likely never will, be two projects so expensive to this area’s taxpayers. I suspect that if two hospitals will be built, services will continue to be split up and either cutbacks will be made to the buildings or there will be huge cost overruns. I say, as did so many other health staff, that one modern hospital, with the latest equipment, will provide much better and more comprehensive health care to everyone. I plan to continue looking into this story in the coming months. Send me your thoughts to paulr@campbellrivermirror.com

As a young adult he began breaking into homes and fell into tthe role of drug debt genforcer. He spent years in eand out of jail before settling in Campbell tRiver. Unfortunately,
an addiction to heroin led him to a number of break and enters in Courtenay to support his habit. Rennie said after being released from prison in Mission on Oct. 28, 2010 he spent one and a half years in Kelowna and cleaned up his act. He worked as a caretaker for the parks and recreation centre in Kelowna and, as a born-again Christian, worked as a
groundskeeper for the Evangel Church. But now he’s back in Campbell River, says he’s been off drugs for three years, and has been here for about four weeks, looking for work. “I lived here before for about five years and I love Campbell River,” Rennie said. “It’s a giving town.” Which is why he can’t believe someone would steal his bottles.
“That’s pretty bad when you’re stealing from the homeless,” Rennie said. “This is totally wrong. Sure I’ve got a bad past but that’s just...wow.” Rennie said the only thing that helps him get past the hurt and the anger is trying to stay upbeat and positive. “I just want to send word out to whoever took it that I’m very disappointed in their
actions but obviously they needed it more than I did,” Rennie said. “I’m hoping it went to something good. “Whoever took it, I hope they put it to good use. It’s hard to look at it from that side, but I’m trying.” For now, Rennie continues going door to door looking for bottles to help him get buy and hopes to get off the streets soon.

Experts’ Advice What do you do if someone has a nosebleed?

There are a few things to be checking on your saltwater tank. If you plan on keeping corals, the testing is more extensive than if you are keeping fish only. For a FOWLR (fish only with live rock) tank you would want to check your Nitrates every 2-4 weeks with an Elos Nitrate Test Kit. Very easy to use and the colors are very easy to distinguish. And, you would also consider checking your pH and specific gravity. pH is another easy to use test kit OR there are digital pH monitors that can be purchased...if you want to get a little more high tech there is a “Pinpoint pH Monitor” that you Sarah Kirk run constantly which gives you a reading on your Owner tank at all times. This does need to be calibrated monthly but are great! They generally cost about $100. SG or specific gravity is something you want to have an idea of “most” of the time. There are 2 devices, one that is more accurate than the other. First the swing arm “hydrometer” which is around $15-$20 and is ok, or you can purchase a “Refractometer” which is 100% accurate as long as you calibrate it regularly. Other than that, your FOWLR testing is complete! For a Reef Tank you test all of the above PLUS you need to test for CA (calcium), ALK (alkalinity) and MG (magnesium). These are all vital parts of building a reef and encouraging coral growth. All are done with Elos test kits which are easy to use and accurate, plus when you purchase them we go over how to use them in detail. Most test kits range in price from $21.99-$35.99 but will test your tank many, many times. We also test water for you free of charge. If any of these elements are not in a “normal” range then you start buffing with different reef products. It’s easy! And we can help!

ImagesTHE Image Off The Web ASK EXPERTS 1 The Interne Internet has changed many things in ou our day to day lives. In the area of Graphic Gra Design, it has had a tremendous effect. Now anyone anyon with a word processing program (i.e. (i.e MS Word) or page layout (MS Publisher, Print Shop, program (M Sharilyn Irving etc.) and a cconnection to the internet, be a graphic can hypothetically hypothe know what they are doing and have an eye for designer if they t layout and design. d The biggest problem, however, are the images and graphics that people “pull off the web” to incorporate into their documents. Just because it looks good on the screen doesn’t mean it will look good iin print. All our mo monitors, from CRT to LED, have an optimized resolution at a 96 DPI. That means that if an image is at 96 DPI, it will look ggood on the screen and you can see it very well. However, when w printing anything from a file, most printers , from inkjet to commercial copiers, have a minimum optimized resolution at a 300 DPI. This means that if you would like to print a document with an image, the image has to be at least 300 DPI at the size tthe image is being printed at. So, if you are ar pulling images from the web, make sure that they are at a high enough resolution so when you print them, your images look good.

Although we may not want it to, especially to our children, stuff happens. Between birth and when your child decides they need insurance protection – for a mortgage, a family whatever – Darlene Garat health problems can occur that Financial Advisor could interfere with insurability. So, juvenile insurance is not just in case they die young, but in case they become uninsurable as an adult. And those are only a couple of the benefits. Many parents choose to purchase permanent policies with cash values and use part of the child tax credit to fund the premium. Set up properly, your child could have a fully paid $250,000 permanent life insurance policy by the time they are 20 years old – with cash values they could use for education, a down payment on a home, or even to start a small business.

First of all not all Echinacea is created equal. When I prescribe Echinacea I only use the E purpurea and E. angustifolia root combination Dr. Ingrid Pincott ND called Echinacea Premium from Naturopathic Physician Mediherb. This way I am assuring the patient gets the full dosage of alkylamides, the active ingredient in Echinacea that tingles the tongue a bit. That is when they know they have a good quality! This blend modulates the immune system not only to prevent colds and flus but also to prevent cancer. I recommend taking one tablet per day all year round to help avoid getting colds or flus at all. I also prescribe it up to 6 per day for treatment of colds and flus with good success.
A feral animal is any domesticated animal that has reverted to living in the wild. In Campbell River as well as Quadra Island there are several colonies of feral cats. These are cats that have descended from pet cats that escaped their homes. Most of the cats living in these colonies have never had direct contact with people and as a result are very frightened of people and don’t make good pets.

There are lots of ways to shelter investments, and protect one’s Peter Garat estate. Depending on your mother’s age, she may still be eligible to open Certified Financial Planner a segregated fund account. Every company is different, but some still offer a 100% death benefit guarantee on older individuals. One company in particular will take deposits to an account to age 95 – however, the account must be opened by age 79 to capture the 100% guarantee. This means that should your mother sell her home later, she could deposit the proceeds to her seg fund account. She could draw on these assets if needed, and the balance at the time of her death would pass directly to the named beneficiaries with virtually no tax payable.
A nosebleed may start for no obvious reason or may be caused by blowing the nose, and injury to the nose, or in more serious cases, by an indirect injury such as a fractured skull. To treat a nosebleed that is not caused by a head or neck injury, you want to place the casualty in a sitting position with the head slightly forward. Leaning Jennifer Comeau forward allows the blood to drain Branch Manager from the nose and mouth instead of back into the throat. Tell the casualty to compress the entire fleshy part below the bridge of the nose firmly with the thumb and index finger for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops. Tell the casualty to breath through their mouth and not to blow their nose for a few hours after the bleeding has stopped. If the bleeding does not stop with this first aid or if it starts again in a short period of time, seek medical help. Do not try to stop a nosebleed resulting from a suspected head or neck injury.

My mom isn’t ready to leave her home, but will probably sell when she has to go into a nursing home. Since the money will likely sit untouched until she passes away, how can we keep the CRA from eventually claiming the bulk of it?
“A TIRED DOG IS A GOOD DOG” Give your dog the exercise he needs, and he will spend much of his day resting – not chewing, barking, digging, escaping or destroying things. “YOUR REACTIONS Cathy Merrithew AFFECT YOUR DOG’S ACTIONS” If you allow your dog to be rewarded for some action, he’s likely to repeat it. Consciously allow rewards to happen for actions you like, and prevent your dog from getting rewarded by you or the environment for actions you don’t want to encourage. “DOGS DO WHAT WORKS” Dogs will act in ways that they’ve learned are successful, ways that gain them good things and help them avoid bad things. Behavior that is rewarded is going to be repeated.

Experts’ Advice What are the health & wellness benefits of using a finnleo sauna?
When using wi-fi hotspots in coffee shops, airports and hotels be aware that there is new and freely available software that makes it easier than ever for other people to see where you’re visiting Don Andrews & Dave Shook and impersonate you on those sites. Fake Wi-Fi hotspots are popping up in greater numbers due to more smartphones, tablets and iPads in use, and can be setup anywhere and pose as legitimate sites. To stay safe, ask the establishment to connect you to their wireless network, and make sure you’re actually attached to it. You never know who is watching, so never use Wi-Fi hotspots for banking or shopping online.

Do you have wall niches and don’t know what to do with them?
The dealership told me that I should take my car to them to have the oil changed to insure that my warranty stays intact and that the proper oil and filter are used. I don’t like to go to the dealer because I have to make an appointment and wait. I prefer to go to my local Great Canadian Oil Change where I can get in and out quickly. What is your opinion?

Don’t play a guessing game with your daily medications. Peoples Drug Mart offers a medication Victor Choo compliance program called Pharmacist/Owner “Med Manager”. The Med Manager is a medication compliance card that conveniently organizes your medications for a full week or month. It helps you easily identify which medications are to be taken at what time of the day.
Under the current law, a Will prepared prior to marriage becomes null and void after marriage unless the Will was made in Gurdeep Sidhu, CGA contemplation of a specific Notary Public marriage. Divorce does not invalidate a Will, but it takes out the gift to the divorced spouse. The affect of a separation is not as clear, it is better to prepare a new Will to clarify the exclusion of the separated spouse. “I’m feeling very down and lethargic, what could be wrong with me” – Mr. Down Excellent question Mr. Down. At this time of year many different things go on with one’s body. Some of the aspects of your life to consider may be: • Hydration: drinking caffeinated beverages dehydrate us. Make sure you are getting your 8 cups of water in per day. Dean Clark, • Sunlight: without enough sun our Physiotherapist body’s natural rhythms are disturbed. This disruption can put you at risk of Seasonal affective disorder (SAD). • Extra weight: If you gained a little weight over the holidays it may be time to get serious about losing it as packing around extra weight is tiring. • Stress: Increased stress adds to muscle tension and therefore it takes more energy from your body. By decreasing your stress level, you may find yourself with more energy at the end of the day. Something as simple as a 15-20 min walk on your lunch break followed by a couple of glasses of water throughout the day can help break this feeling of being lethargic and help put that spring back in your step.

Lyle Wolfe Owner
You can go to whomever you want to have your vehicle serviced for oil changes. However, warranty work has to be done by the dealer. In regards to the correct oil and filter installed, Great Canadian Oil Change typically have access to manufacturers’ service data to ensure that the proper oil viscosity and type is used, as well as the correct filter. In addition, we have a good training program to ensure that the techs are up to speed on the latest technology.

After the drywall is installed, do the first coat of taping Evelyn M compound, only extending Interior Designer onto the ceiling about 3”. Before you start the 2nd coat of mud, mark off a 6” space on the ceiling around the new walls using painters’ tape. Now do the 2nd coat and go just past the edge of the tape. Pull a 3’ section of tape off the ceiling with every completed 6’ of mud. Do a 3rd coat of mud to ensure a smooth finish then sand. To see an example of an original flat section meeting up with a new flat section, go to the Design House BC website’s portfolio section.

You would be surprised. All Canadian coins pre 1967 and American pre 1964 (not pennies or nickles of course) are 80% silver. With the recent increase in silver value, the vast majority of these coins are worth far more as silver, than as collector coins. At today’s prices those coins are worth approximately thirteen times their face value. Just think a quarter is worth $3.25. Give us a call, we would be happy to give you a free appraisal or turn them into cash.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard this, I’d have over eight bucks. Actually I’d have a lot more. Most people’s experience with Randy Beaulieu, compact fluorescents has been Owner from picking them off a shelf at a department store. So they really don’t know what they’re buying. Fact is, the things we didn’t like about fluorescent lighting in the past don’t apply anymore. There’s no flicker, no hum, they come on instantly, and they’re available in colours ranging from the same as regular light bulbs to natural daylight. So before you decide you don’t like compact fluorescent light bulbs, let us show you what there is to like.

A key part of these regulatory approval processes will be the ongoing consultation with First Nations, and engagement of government agencies and stakeholders. Should the project be approved to move forward, BC Hydro’s goal is to complete the regulatory processes and award the contract by summer 2013, and then commence construction. BC Hydro will also provide updates on its Campbell River System hydroelectric operations.
Community involvement
For 50 years, BC Hydro has been providing clean, reliable electricity to our customers. Today we are planning for the next 50 years by investing in new projects, upgrading existing facilities and working with our customers to conserve energy through Power Smart. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 NLT Holy Bible: “So we are always conďŹ dent, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not home with the Lord. For we live by believing and not by seeing. Yes, we are fully conďŹ dent, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies for then we will be at home with the Lord.â€? We grieve not as those who have no hope but we rejoice in knowing that Donna has left her earthly body to be home in the presence of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus, where she longed to be. We look forward to the day we will be with her where she is. Left behind for now are her children: Laurie (Paul) Enns, Ronnie (Linda) Burchert, Cathy (Brent) Warriner, Kelly (Joanne) Burchert, Bonnie (Ernie) Johnson; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and many brothers, sisters, family members and friends. We love you and will miss you‌ till then. Donna’s wishes were for a quiet graveside service. She will be laid to rest at Cape Mudge Cemetery along side her late husband Alfred Grey. Donations can be made in her honour to the BC Children’s Hospital, 4480 Oak St., Vancouver, BC, V6H 3V4. Messages of condolence for the family may be left at www.suttonsfuneralhome.com

STRACHAN Lena Marie March 1945 – February 2012
Lena was born in Finland, and arrived in Sointula at age 6, with her brothers and sister. She raised three children while living in the Upper Island. Lena had a very special talent for teaching. She excelled at that passion while directing the dancers to her music selection. Her loyal “Saddle-Up Dancers class were with her every season at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and enjoyed many invitations to perform at various public functions. She married Keith in 2006 and spent her summers in their back yard and in her “Grotto which she loved so much. Most winters were spent traveling to Pt. Vallarta, Cruise Ships thru the Canal & Caribbean. The Saturdays at the Courtenay Legion gave her the entertainment and friendship she so much enjoyed... thanks to all who knew her and always said, “Hi. Pretty little thing, she was... She is survived by her husband Keith, mother, brother and sister, her children and grandchildren. I KNOW YOU WILL DANCE AND TEACH UP THERE TOO, “BAABEE BYE FOR NOW...
Adrian was confronted with the devastated diagnosis of cancer which ended his life much too soon and in such short time. He passed away peacefully at home. Adrian was the 7th child born to Adrianus Koeleman and Catharina Koeleman-van den Burg in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. He left to mourn his daughter Zoe (Shawn) Read and his grandchildren Oliver and Joshua. His siblings Reno (Florence), Cornel (Rob), Pieter (Beja), Jan (Mick), Joost(Piet), Annemiek (Jan). Many nephews and nieces. His ex wife Sandy Spearing, his good friend and caregiver Debbie, friends Jody, Debra, and Nancy. Adrian emigrated to Canada at the age of 16 where he became a heavy duty mechanic. Before he started a family he travelled the world, lived for a year in Australia before he settled on Quadra Island. He built his log home on Quadra Loop. Later he built his home on the cliff looking out over beautiful Hyacinth Bay and Rebecca Spit. He worked mainly for forest companies and since the seventies he had a close connection with the Strathcona Lodge, which he maintained till his retirement in 2008. He then joined the Quadra Fire Department. He was loved by many people on Quadra Island. During his illness he was lovingly cared for by Debbie. We’d like to thank Dr. Keith Graham, Dr. Erika Kellerhals, Dr. Kerry Baerg, and the nurses from the home support team for their care and assistance. There will be no service by request. A Celebration of Life will be held on February 11th at 2:00 pm In the Community Center on Quadra Island.

Wilson is working on a totem pole that will stand 27-feet high once it’s finished and grace the entrance to the school. On Friday afternoon, Wilson is painstakingly carving out the details with his chain saw while a large groups of students watch, fascinated by Wilson’s work. “I’m really enjoying it,” Wilson says. “I’ve been doing it now for a couple of weeks off and on.” Wilson is at the school most Fridays and sometimes Saturdays working on the totem pole. Arts & Entertainment Silver bricks get the ball rolling on the Tidemark Theatre’s improvement project Send your arts and entertainment submissions to editor@campbellrivermirror.com

The Tidemark Theatre is building a wall – of silver, that is. The Tidemark officially launches its capital campaign Feb. 16 to raise money for t h e at re i m p rove ments and is building a wall of silver bricks to kick it off. The bricks are symbolic and are each worth $100. Each person that “purchases a brick will be rewarded with having his or her name on one of the paper silver bricks that are slowly climbing the wall in the theatre’s lobby. “We started it halfway up the wall, in a little alcove, said Kim Emsley-Leik, managing director of the Tidemark Theatre. “ E ve r yo n e g e t s acknowledged. The Tidemark is hoping to raise a minimum of $50,000 through community contributions, to go along with about $500,000 in g rant monies the Tidemark has applied for. Number one on the theatre’s improvement “wish list is new seating in the theatre, to replace the
original’s from 1947. Kin Fowler, the president of the Tidemark Theatre Society board, said she also hopes to update the theatre’s lighting; install an in-hourse computerized ticketing system (right now tickets are printed in Vancouver); secure a new projector and screen; install monitors in the lobby and outside the building to promote upcoming shows; and re-do the concession. The Tidemark has already secured $306,000 in grants from the Island Coast Economic Trust and the Coast Sustainability Trust but it needs to raise funds from the community as well in order to secure further grants. “We have to show that the community is going to invest in the theatre, Fowler said. “So we have to raise a minimum of $50,000 from the community by March 31 or lose grant funding. T h e T i d e m a rk hopes to sell 500 silver bricks to start off the capital campaign. To purchase a brick call the Tidemark at (250) 287-7899 or stop by the theatre.

The hometown Alberni Valley Bulldogs scored twice on the power play and rode a hot goaltender to a 3-2 upset victory Sunday afternoon over the No. 1 Auto Body Bantam ‘A’ Tyees. It was first game of North Island Tier 2 playoffs for both teams. Bulldogs’ netminder Ryan Price was nothing short of sensational, making a number of outstanding saves, especially during the first period when the Tyees held a wide edge in play. “The longer you go without putting the puck in the net, the more frustrating it gets,” said Tyees head coach Peter Martin. “We are generally good at moving the puck around the front of the net but pretty soon guys were just trying to blast in through (Price) and looking off some passes that were there. He’s a big goalie and not an easy guy to put the puck through.” Campbell River held a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by Josh Coblenz, but the Bulldogs rallied, scoring a pair midway through the second. Sage Lim tied it with just over a minute to go in the middle frame, deflecting home Nick Klein-Beekman’s point shot. The Tyees managed to kill off a five-minute major penalty early in the third but Alberni Valley got the game-winner with the man advantage with just over six minutes remaining. “They played with a short bench and I think it would have really helped if you could have Continued on Page A32

ILLEGAL ILLEGAL DUMPING DUMPING
Landfill operators don’t need a calendar to know a major holiday has come and gone. They experience an enormous increase in garbage after any holiday. It looks like illegal dumping may follow suit. RETHINK before buying holiday stuff that can’t be recycled or reused. Keep it from being illegally dumped in places like your drinking watershed. There are many agencies in town that accept used, good quality household goods.
