“Seriously concerned” about the safety of its workers at Myra Falls, NVI Mining Ltd. is working with Wilson’s Transportation to have seatbelts installed on buses transporting workers to and from the mine site and Campbell River. But, CAW Local 3019 President Bill Garton is singularly unimpressed. “Having seatbelts on the bus is stupid. That’s an idea with no thought put into it whatsoever,” he said. Wearing seat belts on buses will subject passengers to neck injuries from slamming into the top of the seat in front, he predicts. He also believes seatbelts won’t help in a rollover situation. Myra’s Human Resources Superintendent Dave Keiver tells the Mirror: “We have entered into discussions with our carrier looking into seatbelts on buses.” In mid-December, a Wilson’s bus rolled over on treacherously icy Highway 28 near Elk River Main Line. Twelve of the 14 riders on the bus were taken to hospital. Two passengers, Pat Jeffery and Dennis Fawcett, had serious rib, lung and back injuries. At the time of the crash Wilson’s Transportation Vice President John Wilson said preliminary investigations by the company and the RCMP placed 100 per cent blame on the icy conditions. The union president believes the blame for the crash rests with the condition of the roadway. He Continued on A3

Teachers seek school board’s support KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The association representing local teachers is “disappointed” and “disheartened” by the provincial government’s actions as the battle between B.C. teachers and their employer wages on. Four months into teacher strike action, the Campbell River District Teachers’ Association lobbied the board of education at a School District 72 board meeting last week. Members of the teachers’ association carried picket signs around their necks with messages such as ‘Negotiations not Legislation’, ‘Bargain in Good Faith!!’, and ‘Local Bargaining for Local Issues.’ Elaine Thompson, vice-president of the teachers’ association, asked for the board’s help in bargaining with the B.C. Public School Employers’

Association. “We are fighting for the betterment of B.C. children and public education in this province. We feel that all of us need to be on the same side, the side of what is best for students,” Thompson told the board. “So we are here to ask for your help. “As you know, there has been virtually no progress made at the bargaining table between the BCTF (B.C. Teachers Federation) and the BCPSEA (employers’ association), your bargaining agent, and we feel that the trustees could play a role in resolving the bargaining impasse. “ C a m p b e l l R ive r teachers are disappointed and disheartened by the government’s lack of trust and disrespect for the teachers of this province,” Thompson said. “We need to be trusted to do our jobs as professionals.”

Thompson said part of the problem is the employers’ association does not have a mandate to bargain. “The government’s representative at the table, Claire Avison, has finally stated that the ‘government sets the mandate, and it is not negotiable.’ She has made it clear – the government is intransigent, which means t h at t h e B C P S E A (employers’ association) has no mandate whatsoever to bargain,” Thompson said. “How can you bargain in good faith when you have a zero mandate?” School trustee Daryl H a g e n b a cke d u p Thompson’s claim. Hagen has sat on the board for the employers’ association for five years and noted in that time the employers’ association has never negotiated a contract because it is the province making the decisions. Hagen said he would

Campbell River and District Teachers Association members Rudi Kreis (left) and Dave Coad get their message across to the school board during last week’s meeting.

like to see the board send a message that “legislation is not a way to negotiate” and that the process is not about money, but about classroom conditions. “Classroom size and

composition is not working for this district,” Hagen said. “It’s about coming out with a deal about what’s best for teaching conditions locally so we can do what’s best for kids.

The employers’ association maintains class size and composition are legislation and are part of the School Act. “These matters are not available for bargaining at any level,”

said a release from the employers’ union. “Last year, the BC Supreme Court did find that those provisions were invalid, however, the court suspended its declaration for one year to allow government time to address the decision.” The teachers’ association began phase one of strike action on the first day of classes, Sept. 6, and since then teachers have abstained from administrative tasks such as writing report cards, filling out forms, meeting with principals, and supervising playgrounds. Teachers are seeking wage increases, and improved classroom conditions. The employers’ association says the teachers’ federation came to the table with proposals costing $2 billion, including significant increases to salary, benefits, preparation time, and leave time.

Bus crash: No laws requiring seatbelts on bus Continued from A1

charges that the public portion of the highway up to the Gold River turnoff had “not been kept up.” G a r t o n s ay s t h e mine’s road surface crews do a good job of clearing the road from the Gold River turnoff on to the mine, but the same cannot be said for Department of Highways contractor, Emcom. “I’d say they were slow.” Emcom Services Inc. Road Superintendent Justin Burgers could not be reached for comment. However, RCMP Constable Mark Blacklock says road conditions were changing rapidly and highways crews were on the scene of the accident soon after it happened. “I don’t see it as an issue because they were already on the road.” Keiver says the company has conducted its own investigation into the accident. That probe will likely remain an “internal” one, but Keiver said it contains nothing “unusual.” He did say the effort to get seat belts installed is not the result of the

investigation. That initiative “springs from the fact that there were people injured on the bus and our concern that steps be taken to prevent similar injuries in another accident. Very quickly the seat belt question was out there.” Keiver says part of that process involves a “lear ning curve” regarding why various industry operators do or do not have seat belts installed. “Re g ardless of whether the industry has them, we are seri-

ously looking into what it is going to take to equip our (buses) with seatbelts. Most buses are designed (to withstand) forward impact. In this particular situation the bus kind of slowly slid off the side of the road and lay down on its side.” Keiver said in discussions with Wilson’s “we are finding that it is not as simple as just deciding we will install seatbelts on the current seats. There are a lot of technical issues that we are trying to get a handle on about

the design of the seats, how we can attach (seatbelts) to them and how they are anchored to the structure of the bus.” Wilson’s General Manager Joe Jansen says: “We are reviewing the costs associated with that. It’s going to be up to the mine if they want that they can certainly specify that. There is a cost of some nature associated with that. “There are currently no laws in the country requiring that. Buses have been designed

over the years...to contain the passenger in the seat. Jansen added that because seatbelts are not legislated in Canada, industry “has not embraced it.” The provincial gover nment does not even want seatbelts to be added to existing buses. A recent Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement bulletin was issued to all vehicle inspectors and school bus operators to clarify Transport Canada, Motor Vehi-

cle Safety Act and BC Motor Vehicle Act regulations pertaining to the use of seatbelts on school bus seats that were not manufactured to be equipped with seatbelts. Division manager Brian Kangas stated in the bulletin: “Modification to the seat or any addition of a seatbelt or restraint device where one was not provided by the manufacturer could possibly diminish the existing passenger protection by being a potential cause of injury in a

severe impact.” Keiver responded: “No good deed goes unpunished, eh?” Further complicating the process is the fact that effective January 2009, the Occupational Health and Safety regulations of WorkSafeBC exempted worker transportation vehicles on and off a highway from a seatbelt requirement. Nevertheless Keiver says: “We’re taking steps to do what we can to increase the protection of our workforce.”

Dinner serves up support for salmon enhancement Local conservationists and anglers will gather for a fundraising dinner and auction on Feb. 4 to support Pacific salmon conservation, enhancement, education and habitat restoration activities in Campbell River. Tickets are still available, and money raised will be used by the Pacific Salmon Foundation to fund projects in the local region. Since 1999, the Pacific Salmon Foundation has made grants

totaling $594,099 to 98 Pacific salmon projects in Campbell River. Combined with local fundraising, volunteers in Campbell River have leveraged these funds to generate a total of $4.8 million in conservation, enhancement, education and habitat restoration activities. Local granting last year included the Simms Creek Stewardship Society, which received $7,500 in 2011 to hold the biennial “Wetlands to Waves”

workshop over the May long weekend. The event was attended by 200 people who learned about issues affecting Pacific salmon and local streamkeeping opportunities. Last year, the Pacific Salmon Foundation also made a major investment in the Oyster River watershed, just 25 kilometres south of Campbell River. The Foundation invested $100,000 to help create the Bear Creek Nature Park, which includes

a new wetland, floodplain, Pacific salmon h a t c h e r y, a n d a n upland second-growth forest with walking and equestrian trails along the Oyster River. This is the third annual Pacific Salmon Foundation dinner in Campbell River, and it will be held on Saturday, February 4 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall at 1999 14th Avenue. Money rolling into theatre Coast Sustainability trust matches earlier grant KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A second grant has rolled in for improvements to the Tidemark Theatre without the public having to pay a cent. The Coast Sustainability Trust announced Monday it would match the Island Coast Economic Trust’s $153,000 grant which was approved earlier last week. With the two grants, the total capital raised for the Tidemark Theatre improvements is $306,000. Kin Fowler, the president of the Tidemark Theatre Society board, said the society applied for several provincial and federal grants,

totalling more than $500,000, but some had conditions attached. Fowler said some of the grant agencies wanted proof that the community supports the improvement project. “We have to show that the community is going to invest in the theatre,” Fowler said. “So we have to raise a minimum of $50,000 from the community by March 31 or lose grant funding.” T he society will launch a community donation drive Feb. 16, the Tidemark 25 Capital Campaign, in recognition of the Tidemark’s 25th anniversary this fall. The improvement project is a way to

mark the milestone. Fowler said the society has a number of items on what she calls the “wish list” for the Tidemark. Number one is tearing out the old seats and putting in new ones. “The seats there are from 1947 (when the Tidemark was a Van Isle Movie Theatre). They’re still the original seats,” Fowler said. “They were re-upholstered and updated in 1987 but they’re still original seats and we can’t get replacement parts because they don’t make them anymore; the upkeep of seats is becoming an issue.” The society would also like to update the lighting, install an in-house computerized ticketing system to enable target marketing; secure a new

projector and screen; install monitors in the lobby and outside the building to promote upcoming shows; and re-do the concession. Monday’s funding announcement was encouraging news for Fowler. “The contribution made by the Coast Sustainability Trust is going to help us modernize and rejuvenate this historic building, as well as help us streamline and enhance the efficiency of our operations,” Fowler said. “But we’re just getting started. Additional funding is required for the society to adequately fund a project of this magnitude. The society recognizes that this is a community project and as such we will be doing our part by launching the Tidemark 25 Capital Campaign.”

Tax break promotes development Downtown the focus of exemption KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Council has extended an incentive program to get business owners to invest in the downtown core. Any revitalization or redevelopment on proper ties located within what the city has dubbed a “special commercial area will receive a tax exemption. The program, known as the Downtown Revitalization Tax Exemption bylaw, is aimed at fostering downtown commerce.

The Mortgage Centre

“ I t w i l l p rov i d e financial relief for three to five years for new development in the area, said Ron Neufeld, manager of city operations. “It’s a small amendment to the bylaw to increase commercial development in the downtown area. With the new program, it’s expected the tax exemption for commercial development will be increased from 50 per cent to 100 per cent within the designated area, and the term of exemption be extended from three to five years. The special commercial area encompasses Shoppers Row and the Island Highway up to the fishing pier. It also contains St. Ann’s, 10th Avenue, 11th Avenue,

2X3.5 2X3.5 JILL

and 13th Avenue. Buck said the proposed boundary contains a number of underdeveloped and vacant sites, including large, unmarked parking lots. “Redevelopment of these sites will provide opportunity to relocate parking underground (or at grade under building) with commercial occupancies fronting the sidewalks, wrote Ian Buck, city planner, in a report to council. “Removing the vacant space created by parking lots provides the additional benefit of reducing the unattractive and disconnected appearance that exists in the downtown today. Buck said extending the tax incentive area

will also encourage a pedestrial downtown. The special commercial area includes the Pier Street area, Chances casino, City Hall, the downtown t r a n s i t e x c h a n g e, Shoppers Row, and Spirit Square within its boundaries. Buck said redevelopment in the area could also include “greening which would make it more appealing to pedestrians. Coun. Andy Adams was pleased to see the tax exemption extended. “As the person who really championed this, I’m pleased Mr. Neufeld is bringing forward these amendments, said Adams at last Tuesday’s council meeting. He also pointed out

the exemption only applies to the tax increase resulting from improvements on a building or property. For example, on an existing building valued at $200,000 the owner would be exempt $15,005 for three years, but if that building was redeveloped to a $3 million building, the owner would be exempt $30,011 for five years. “It’s important to note that this does not impact on current revenues for properties, Adams said. “Similar to the Downtown Revitalization Tax bylaw, the amendment only applies to new improvements. “I think under the current financial situation that’s important to consider.

Our View

Time to enrich poverty debate Against a backdrop of stunningly high home assessment values for 2011, Surrey-Fleetwood MLA Jagrup Brar found “seven-star” accommodation in Newton last week, as part of his quest to live on a single, employable We say: Kudos to man’s welfare income for the month. It’s a 12’ by 12’ room in a Newton Surrey MLA for house he’ll share with six other getting out and people. Brar’s portion will cost $375. The space is reasonably clean, at doing real work least, and there’s room for Brar and his large frame to move around. That can’t be said about one of the other rooms he viewed – not much more than a closet, barely big

enough to fit a twin bed, but nothing else. The person who will be occupying that stellar room – to the tune of $500 a month – will be coming out of hospital after surgery. With a place to lay his head secured, Brar’s attention turned to another necessity: food. With his finances already dwindling (after spending money on rent/damage deposit, and a cellphone and bus tickets – needed in order to search for work, a requirement for collecting his social assistance), Brar budgeted about $30 for a week’s worth of groceries. Is Brar’s stint on the streets ‘real’? Technically, no. Even he admits that. Is it worthwhile? Yes.

The public often demands that politicians walk a mile in their shoes, yet many are damning Brar for what appears to be an earnest attempt on his part to better understand the plight of the poor. In our instant-gratification culture, going without – even for a short period of time and in the context of a simulated experience – can go a long way toward providing insight. Hopefully, Brar will bring new wisdom, along with the voice of his constituents, to the legislative table and bring positive change. That’s why people voted for him. In fact, it’s his job. – Black Press

Letters

Derelict boat litters beach I don’t know if this is the right place for an opinion letter to the editor but here goes. I read the article in Wednesday’s paper about the threat to blockade Island Timberlands from logging on Cortes Island. My comment to these protestors would be that they have a right to morally protest logging only under these conditions. They absolve themselves from the use of all forest products. These include toilet paper, newspapers, writing paper, napkins, the house they live in (which I’m sure contains wood products), the list is to long to continue but I’m sure as someone who is concerned about the conservation of the forests will look up and refrain from using all products derived from the forest industry. I hope that these protestors do not have jobs that in any way rely on the use of forest products because they would have to leave that employment out of good conscience. Oh, and don’t go on social assistance when you are unemployed because a portion of that money is derived from forest industry stumpage and tax revenue. I do believe in responsible logging options as I have worked in the forest industry my entire working life and believe that the industry should be managed properly for the future. Ray Sumner

Enbridge oil pipeline won’t be happening

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

After following the opening phase of the National Energy Board’s hearings on the Northern Gateway oil pipeline proposal, I have a prediction. B.C. will never see this pipeline. And that’s probably the best outcome. The first reason is the nearly unanimous opposition of informed Kitimat-area residents, led by Haisla Nation Chief Councillor Ellis Ross and skilled local volunteers who described the marine environment of the Kitimat estuary. There was speculation that Ross, who was just appointed to chair Premier Christy Clark’s new Aboriginal Business and Investment Council,

might bend on the oil proposal. His testimony put that notion to rest. The Haisla, Haida, Gitga’at and other members of the Coastal First Nations group put their marker down on managed logging and eco-tourism years before this pipeline debate heated up. California do-gooders may have coined the term “Great Bear Rainforest,” but make no mistake, these tribes run the place. Moving inland, the Northern Gateway pipeline route is a tangle of dozens of asserted traditional territories, some in the century-old Treaty 8 zone and others with no legal settlement. Our courts will require at least another generation of millionaire lawyers to untangle the territorial

claims involved, no matter what the B.C., Canadian or Chinese governments may wish to do with this oil. The Haisla have embraced liquefied natural gas ships, plants and pipelines, which may be all the industrial development the region can handle. Condensate can continue to be shipped into Kitimat by tankers and sent by railcar to Alberta to dilute bitumen. Which brings me to the alternatives to Northern Gateway. CP Rail just announced a major investment in its U.S. main line south of Saskatchewan, to transport crude oil from the Bakken Formation, an emerging source of shale oil and gas under Saskatchewan, Alberta and North Dakota.

CP shipments out of North Dakota went from 500 carloads in 2009 to more than 13,000 carloads in 2011. The new target is 70,000. B.C.’s likeliest alternative for oilsands crude is the existing Trans Mountain pipeline, which has been pumping Alberta oil and refined products to the West Coast at Burrard Inlet for nearly 60 years. Port Moody’s Ioco refinery is gone, but Chevron’s Burnaby plant remains, and some crude goes out by tanker or pipeline to refineries south of B.C. The current owner of Trans Mountain, Kinder Morgan Canada, is naturally watching the Enbridge battle closely. A Kinder Morgan represenContinued on A9

Stabbing trial gets underway MIA HEITLAND CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The trial of a Campbell River woman accused of stabbing her common-law husband to death in their home in 2010 got underway Friday in Campbell River Supreme Court. Linda Mitchell, 53, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second degree murder in the death of Christopher Warren, 55. Mitchell is out on bail.

In his opening statement to a jury of eight women and four men, Crown counsel John Boccabella warned the jury that some of the images they would see and some of the evidence they would hear over the course of the trial would be unpleasant. The Crown contends that Mitchell stabbed Warren in the back during an argument in the couple’s studio apartment on the afternoon of April 2, 1010.

Warren’s body was discovered – bloody and lying on his bed – by his daughter Erin Warren, who arrived at the apartment to check on her father after her grandmother reported that Warren and Mitchell were arguing. Mitchell, who was in the apartment at the time, was arrested a short time later, after Erin Warren called police to the scene, Boccabella told the jury. The cause of death was later

determined to be a single stab wound to the middle of Warren’s back. The Crown’s first witness, Sgt. Shelly Massey was the forensics officer who photographed both Mitchell while she was in police custody, as well as the crime scene. Massey and Crown counsel David Sissons presented approximately 300 photos to the jury. The trial is expected to last four weeks.

Fletcher: No major surge to Asia Continued from A8

tative provided the following information about tanker traffic from their Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby. In 2011 there were 32 tankers loaded at Westridge, down from 69 in 2010. Demand varies widely (there were

no tankers in 2000) and current traffic is similar to what went out of Burrard Inlet in the 1970s. Contrary to popular belief, there is not yet a major surge to Asia. For every 10 ships that load at Westridge, on average eight sail to California, one to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries,

and only one to Asia. Current Port Metro Vancouver rules allow Aframax-class tankers (80,000 to 119,000 dead weight tons) to pass under the Lions Gate and Second Narrows bridges, but they can’t take on a full load. That would require dredging in Second Narrows, which would

increase general shipping safety as well as capacity. Kinder Morgan has not yet formally applied to twin the Trans Mountain line. If it does expand its priceless right of way, the capacity would be greater than the Enbridge proposal. One way or another,

in preparing the meal, encourage the discussion of these flavours and help youngsters to appreciate the production of food. If you were raised in a family where the art of slow eating was entrenched then you received a precious gift. It is never too late to adjust one’s eating habits and pass the gift along to others. Potato Wedges are divine! If your youngsters are old enough to help with chopping foods this is a great way to involve them in the fun of meal preparation. It is also a slick way to use up odds and ends in the fridge. Take two pounds of white or sweet potatoes, a half cup of olive oil, some salt and fresh garlic. Try thyme, sage or rosemary for extra flavour. Wedgecut the potatoes and toss them in with the herbs and the oil. Roast uncovered in a 400 degree oven for 40 min. or less if you are using yams or sweet potatoes. An over ripe tomato or a bit of dried up cheese lurking in the back of the fridge can greatly add to the taste.

Alcohol leads to another foolish crime PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A n o t h e r d r u n ke n episode has 23-year-old Anthony Galligos back in jail. Galligos has been locked up since Dec. 14, when he was tracked down and bitten by a police dog. He was found with two bottles of booze stolen from the Fusilli Grill. Galligos has a his-

tory of alcohol-related offences, none more serious than his conviction last April for sexual interference with a person under age 16. According to Crown prosecutor Adrienne Venturini, Galligos was drinking with a 13-yearold girl, a family friend, when he made sexual advances. Galligos received a one-year jail sentence and was ordered to take

Judge Peter Doherty expressed grave concern that Galligos is an untreated sex offender and is either unable or refuses to complete the counselling. He sentenced Galligos

to 30 days jail for the breach of probation, to be followed by 12 months probation, during which time he must complete counselling or face longer terms behind bars. For the charge of possession of stolen liquor, Galligos received time served and was ordered to stay away from the Fusilli Grill. According to Venturini, just after 1 a.m. on Dec. 14, two men

were seen running from the Fusilli Grill on Dogwood Street after the restaurant’s alarm system sounded. When police arrived, they found two rocks that had been used to break the glass door. An RCMP of ficer, along with a police dog, followed a track north on Dogwood, across the Carihi Secondary fields and along Ridge Road. The dog led the officer to Galligos who was found

Drug-fuelled rampage City could kickstart tidal energy industry leads to more jail time KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A 26-year-old man with a history of violence is back in jail after threatening to kill two people. Devan Daigle has previous convictions for assault and other property of fences, most of which are directly linked to his long-standing drug habit. His latest offences occurred last month, during the course of what appeared to be another drug binge. On Monday, in Campbell River provincial court, Daigle appeared by video from jail in Victoria and entered guilty pleas to charges of uttering death threats, theft under $5,000, and driving while prohibited. He was first arrested Dec. 1, after stealing

goods amounting to $10.34 from a convenience store. The RCMP officer who arrested him near the 7-Eleven noted in his report that Daigle appeared to be high on heroin. He was released from custody on a promise to appear and then had another runin with police on Dec. 23, when an officer spotted Daigle driving on Cedar Street, near JJ’s Pub. The officer knew Daigle did not have a driving licence and pulled the vehicle over in a nearby parking lot. The vehicle belonged to another man, who was seated in the passenger’s seat, and drug paraphernalia was also found. The arresting officer noted in his report that Daigle got out of

the vehicle and began screaming, “I’m a f----- idiot.” The third and final incident occur red Christmas Day. According to Crown prosecutor Adrienne Ve n t u r i n i , p o l i c e received a call from a woman on Dec. 25, who said Daigle was threatening to kill her, another man, and then himself. By the time officers had arrived, the woman had fled the residence in fear, while Daigle was found running around searching for her. The woman told officers that Daigle had arrived at her residence two days earlier with enough cocaine to treat everyone for the holidays. But on Christmas Day, Daigle began ranting that he couldn’t find the cocaine and

began tur ning the house “upside down.” T h at ’s wh e n h e threatened to kill the woman and another man at the residence. Daigle has remained in custody since the Christmas incident. At Monday’s sentencing hearing, defence lawyer James Hormoth said his client wants to get back into drug treatment for the second time in two years. Judge Doher ty sentenced Daigle to another 40 days behind bars for the death threats and the theft, plus one year of probation. He was also prohibited from driving for one year and fined $500 for the Dec. 23 offence. In addition, Daigle was ordered to stay aw ay f r o m b o t h 7-Eleven stores.

C a m p b e l l R ive r could lead the country in developing energy from the ocean tides, according to an organization pushing for ocean energy in B.C. Situated along Discovery Passage, Campbell River could be the place where the tidal energy industry is developed, said Chris Campbell, executive director of Ocean Renewable Energ y Group, which supports ocean energy projects across Canada. “The reason why Campbell River keeps coming up and why national companies look here is Discover Passage includes five of the top 50 Canadian (tidal power) sites,” Campbell said at a council meeting Tuesday night. “This is an industry yet to be developed, there are no suppliers, which translates into an opportu-

nity for researchers and an opportunity for the region to be a leader as this industry is designed. We’ve got some companies that are interested in this area.” The city lead a tidal p owe r a s s e s s m e n t study last year, the first municipality in B.C. to do so, and results indicated that currents around the fishing pier are not fast enough to power electricity. However, the area is suitable for research and demonstration purposes. “The best way for the city to move forward on promoting tidal energy would be to promote Campbell River as a research and demonstration site and partner with industry and senior gover nment,” Amber Zirnhelt, the city’s sustainability manager, said in September. “Often researchers prefer sites with slower currents.”

Campbell agreed the city would be an ideal test location. “It would be strategical, I think, for Campbell River to think of itself as a development centre for this industry and...basically become a place where people will be looking to as the industry starts to grow,” Campbell said. He added he sees the industry “as an economic opportunity (for Campbell River) as it is developed.” Campbell also told council that Ocean Renewable Energ y G ro u p a n d o t h e r marine energy proponents will be writing a letter to the provincial government asking cabinet to enable BC Hydro to offer “enhanced standardoffer” contracts for a small group of pioneering wave and tidal projects. Council agreed, after Campbell’s presentation, to sign the letter in the support.

The Carihi theatre department presents a dark comedy that chronicles the struggles of parenthood.

The fairytale of parenting Carihi Theatre Department has been over-run by goblins, giants and witches. Its latest play, GRIM, is about a bunch of foolish goblins that are given the task of raising two human babies. Unsure of what to do with crying, flailing newborns,

they refer to the only manual at their disposal, a book of fairy tales. What happens throughout the play is a mixture of moments that are sometimes dark and troubling, and other times surprising and hilarious. “Working on this

play has taught me to take big risks on stage,” says Zoe Frank, a Grade 12 student at Carihi. “The play is not what you’d expect from fairy tales. Not everything turns out well, but it’s fun to watch, and be part of.” The cast and crew

will be performing this play at the North Island Regional Drama Festival, next month, in Comox. You can see it in Campbell River in the Carihi Theatre/Gym on Wed., January 18 and Fri., January 20 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.

Come and celebrate what could be the Year of the Fiddle Contra Dance at the Big Yellow Merville Hall this Saturday. Time to slip on your patent leather dancing shoes and join in with the other dancers forming those long contra lines up and down the freshly cleaned and polished hardwood dance floor. The Comox Valley’s youthful Funtime Fiddlers will keep the music flowing while bonne vivante, June Cannon, calls the moves. Contra dancing is a style of folk dance in which the dancers form a set of two parallel lines which run the length of the hall. Many of the basic moves in Contra dancing are similar to those in square dancing (swings, promenades, dosà-dos, allemandes).

The difference is that the dancers progress up or down the line eventually dancing with every other couple in the line. Each dance is taught by the caller before it is danced, with the caller prompting the dancers as needed. Contra dances are very easy to learn because the pattern of moves of each Contra dance is oft repeated. Contra Dance is family friendly and is very active. The fiddlers will have another dance style inbetween the Contras. You’ll be able to waltz, jig, twostep and polka or sashay over to the canteen for a little refreshment. It’s an old style Saturday night with a modern twist. There will be a Contra Dance workshop right before the dance. From 6:45 to

7:15 p.m., Cannon will introduce the dancers to new moves as well as teach the basic moves. This workshop is free of charge. At 7:30pm, the Funtime Fiddlers start the music and the dancing begins. Single dancers are welcome as they can pair up with anyone during the Contras and our Contra sets last about 15 to 20 minutes per dance. With subdued lighting and cozily arranged tables, the fiddle club creates a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. So on Saturday, start the year long celebrations at the Big Yellow Merville Dance Hall, on the Old Island Highway, just past the Merville Store. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., dance starts at 7:30. Cost is $10 /adults, $5 /youth and you can come as a family for $22.

Tyees tame the Grizzlies The No. 1 Auto Body Bantam A Tyees rode the hot goaltending of Nick Kirchner and some timely scoring to a 6-1 victory over the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies Saturday afternoon at Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria. Tyee Grady McInnes tallied twice for Campbell River, with singles going to Gavin Rauser, Cole Rennie, Devyn Grant, and Austin Simper. The game was much closer than the score indicates as the Tyees held a slim 2-1 lead until late in the second period. Kirchner managed to hold the fort until the offence got rolling, making a number of brilliant saves, especially during Juan de Fuca’s five power play opportunities. “Nick was definitely the first star of the game today,” said Tyees assistant coach Jim Ross. “We could have easily been down by two or three after the first period. We got off to a slow start and that’s when you need your goaltender to step up – he really came through for us.” The Tyees, who have lost only once in their last seven league games, led 1-0 after the first period

and 4-1 after two. Coach Ross gave the unsung hero award to defenceman Tyson Dumont. “I can’t say enough about him,” Ross said. “He plays on the B (bantam rep) team but we’ve had so many injuries we’ve had to call him up a lot. He has a great work ethic and gives you everything he’s got – in practices and in games.” Ross also praised Tyson’s father, Stewart Dumont, for the excellent work he has done as head coach of the Bantam B team this season. “Stewart’s been a tremendous help to us. It’s been like a revolving door around here with all the injuries this year but he goes out of his way to accommodate us,” Ross said. “Every player we’ve called up has stepped right in and played well for us.” The Tyees are gradually getting healthy, but still have three regulars out of the lineup. It was the final game of the regular season for both the Tyees and Grizzlies, and both finished with identical 6-4 records. The two teams will likely meet again in the Island Tier 2 playoffs, which begin early next month.

Great blues dominate the shore You’d think they own the place by the way they strut around. Great blue herons, large enough to dominate all other shorebirds, seem to stand guard over Vancouver Island fresh and saltwater shorelines. Reminiscent of prehistoric pterosaurs, their flight is ungainly and their vocalization crude, more a croak than a call. Dominant and statuesque, at 117 cm (46 in.) in size, they are challenged only by the occasional – and smaller – bald eagle, at 90 cm (35 in.). Avowed enemies, bald eagles prey upon heron chicks in the nest; because it takes heron nestlings two months to leave the nest, the eagles have plenty of opportunity to pillage and plunder. The great blue heron, blue for m (Ardea herodias), is a yearround avian resident in the Pacific Northwest. Numerous and easy to spot, these long-legged wading birds can usually be seen standing for long periods of time, just offshore. Opportunistic feeders, herons will remain in shallow water, patiently wait for their prey to come close, whereupon they strike, spearing fish, crab or frog with long, sharp bills. Prey captured, herons will then expertly juggle the aquatic tidbit until it’s
