Lola’s rising above cancer Coal mine expansion gets the go-ahead KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Watching Lola Audet run around the school gym, you’d never know the eight-year-old bundle of energy was fighting cancer. Audet, a Grade 2 student at École Mer-et-Montagne, is no longer testing positive for cancer cells, but is still undergoing treatment for leukemia, which was she was diagnosed with in September 2010. “She’s into the maintenance phase of her treatment. I believe her cancer cells are in remission,” said her mom Thereasa Martin. “Out of every three months, she goes to Vancouver twice for lumbar punctures [spinal taps] and the rest can be done here at the cancer clinic in the hospital.” The punctures are done to test for cancer cells, plus Audet takes four to five different oral medications. Martin said the steroids Audet takes for two week periods have some side effects. “She’s always hungry, so on steroid days I’ll pack her two sandwiches,” Martin said. “And she’ll have mood swings. At first I didn’t know what was going on so it was hard but we’re a year into it now so we’re getting more used to it – it’s more manageable.” Audet was first diagnosed with cancer the night before the first day of school when she was just six-years-old. Martin said Audet was constantly tired, pale and had an infection on her toe that wouldn’t go away.

The Quinsam coal mine will be allowed to extend its mining operations, after being awarded an amendment permit this week. However, the project could still face a review from the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, pending completion of a review by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The announcement of the permit came Wednesday afternoon, just hours after Campbell River city council received an informational update regarding the mine’s application. In August, city council expressed concern about water quality in nearby lakes and streams, environmental management, and remediation plans in the event of the mine’s closure. The mine area will expand with the extension. Workers will dig into an area known as “7-South” which is expected to yield a higher sulfur-content coal. According to a report written for city council by biologist Terri Martin, the city’s environment co-ordinator, the draft report received earlier this month from the Vancouver Island Mine Development Committee, does address some of the concerns.

“The city expressed a concern about water quality that span many aspects of proposed min development,” Martin wrote. “It appears that the draft report addresses the...process to minimize harmful effects...through a variety of measures from changes in the mine plan.” Martin said that since many of the areas involved are beyond the city’s area of technical expertise, “we are relying on the professional expertise of senior government agencies to ensure that these matters are thoroughly addressed.” The potential for seep Continued on Page A3

Martin said she got a call from the doctor at 9 p.m. on Sept. 6. Audet’s blood test showed her hemoglobin, platelets and white blood cells were so low that she was flown to Vancouver’s BC Children’s Hospital that night. Audet, her mom, dad Allan Audet, and sister Lizzie, who is in Kindergarten, stayed in Vancouver until spring 2011 in an apartment paid for by the non-profit YANA (You’re Not Alone) which helps families with medical expenses. “They’re awesome. They even helped us out with gas money,” Martin said. “We had to make three trips (to Vancouver) in December and one in January, and with Christmas and birthdays it got pretty tight.” Ecole Mer-et-Montagne also hosted a number of fundraisers for the family and educational assistant Martine Chabot wrote Audet a story. The book, titled Reve en puix petite fille, is written in French but translated in English on a side flap. The book is full of pictures of Audet before she got sick. Chabot hopes to sell copies of the book around the school to contribute to the fundraising efforts. Although Audet is on the mend, she still has to go to Vancouver for treatment and the costs add up. Fortunately the trips to Vancouver are getting shorter and further apart, and Audet is starting to settle back into a regular routine. “In September she started school again and she did tutoring in the summer so she didn’t have to fall behind a grade,” Martin said. “She loves school and it was hard on her not to go. She’s doing really, really well. She has fun and she’s not fragile at all. If you didn’t know, you wouldn’t be able to tell.” The only thing she can’t do is play dodge ball. Audet has to wear a Venicular Access Device in her chest, underneath the skin. The device is an alternative to an IV hooked up to her arm. Any fluids, medication, including chemo, that Audet needs can be put in the tube, which comes out at the side of her neck and is connected to the device. Still, it doesn’t hold her back. “She jumps on trampolines, she climbs trees, she rough houses, all that stuff,” Martin said. Which is just how she’s always been. “She’s sunshine,” said her principal Dominique Joyal. “We’re very happy she’s back.”

Coastal ferry fares at ‘tipping point’ TOM FLETCHER BLACK PRESS

B C Fe r r i e s h a s reached a “tipping point” of rising fares and declining ridership, and should cut costs or add more subsidy to keep future fare increases to the rate of inflation, BC Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee says. Macatee began his term last year with a full-scale review of

the ferry system, and delivered a report with 24 recommendations on Tuesday. He says the government should consider increasing subsidies, reduce sailings on low-ridership routes and make reservations free so BC Ferries can plan its sailing capacity more accurately. Macatee proposes that BC Ferries reverse its reservation system so people without a

reserved spot would pay an extra fee. That, along with varying rates to induce people to travel during off-peak times, could reduce the empty seats and car deck spaces, the report says. BC Ferries has a lower resident fare for northern routes and discount “experience cards” on minor routes. “A true yield management system will con-

sist of a range of fares, reflecting demand levels, an therefore the ferry user has a choice between fare level and service convenience,” the report says. Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom it’s too early to comment on whether the government can increase the $150 million subsidy that B.C. taxpayers put into BC Ferries annually. NDP ferries critic

Gary Coons also wouldn’ t say how much more non-ferry users should pay, but he repeated his position that BC Ferries should be treated as part of the highway system, with new ships and terminals financed by taxpayers like highways and bridges. Fares have increased 47 per cent on major routes and 80 per cent on minor routes since 2003.

Mine: A review remains possible Continued from Page 1 contamination into Long Lake remains a concern, based on the information presented in the draft report. The Ministry of the Environment has directed Quinsam Coal to implement a large-scale mitigation program for the Lake, which is now under way. The program, however, is not part of the 7-South expansion. “It is our understanding that the mitigation falls outside of the permit amendment,” Martin said. As for environmental management and remediation once the mine is closed, parent company Hillborough Resources has provided a confidential and detailed cost estimate to the Ministry of Energy and Mines

along with updated closure plan for the site. T h e c o m m i t t e e ’s draft report recommended increasing the security held for the site to reflect the total liability at the mine site. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is also evaluating Quinsam’s application to determine if a Fisheries Act authorization is required. “If an authorization is required it will in turn trigger a review by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency,” Martin said. Wednesday’s announcement of the Mine Act permit does not eliminate the potential for an environmental assessment. Local environmental groups opposing the mine extension were left without com-

ment after the short announcement from the provincial government. “We don’t know the details, and the devil is in the details,” said Stan Goodrich of Greenways Land Trust. “We are obviously very interested, and we’ll be taking some time to review it. We will have a comment but we like to speak with one voice.” In a press release, David Turnbull,CEO of Hillborough Resources, which operates the mine said the company was very pleased to receive the permit. “We appreciate the province’s diligence in ensuring that Quinsam Mine remains an innovative and high-quality operation,” Turnbull said. “ We ’ v e w o rk e d

closely with them so that we can continue to meet or exceed all regulatory requirements and protect key local environmental values. We also have worked very closely with local First Nations, as well as with the local community and other key stakeholders.” Located 20 kilometres west of Campbell River Quinsam Mine, the only underground coal mine in B.C., produces approximately 500,000 tonnes of ther mal coal a year. The mine started production in 1986. It has in excess of 40 million tonnes of coal resources. Quinsam Mine provides wages and benefits for about 140 employees totaling more than $14 million per year. Quinsam Mine is committed to main-

taining the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance, said a press release from the Ministry of Energy and Mines. “Among its other commitments to sustainability, it is dedicated to developing and implementing techniques to recycle old waste materials and convert them to usable products. Fur thermore, it was the first mine to be permitted to dispose of coarse rock refuse underground in old mine workings.” The province expects to see eight new mines and another nine mining expansions operational in British Columbia by 2015. This is the second mine expansion announced and the first on Vancouver Island.

Daigle lands another boat contract The Nanaimo Port Authority has chosen Daigle Welding & Marine Ltd. of Campbell River to design and build a new EagleCraft 39-foot pilot/patrol boat. The NPA Ospre y, designed by Steve Daigle and his naval architect Felipe Garcia, will be a multi-task vessel constructed specifically to meet the duties of a pilot boat, patrol vessel, fire boat and water ambulance for the Port of Nanaimo. It is expected to be in service this spring just in time for the start of the port’s cruise ship season. The NPA Osprey is the second vessel that the Nanaimo Por t Authority has purchased in the past year from Daigle Welding & Marine. The NPA Eagle, a 32-foot smaller version of the new vessel purchased in 2011, recently had a new 110 hp diesel fire pump

KRISTEN DOUGLAS City council will allow a couple to build a tall shed on their property despite objections from neighbours. Mike and Judy Miller asked council Tuesday night for permission to build a shop, larger than the allowable size, beside their home on McDougall Way, in the Painter’s Lodge area. The Millers asked council to increase the maximum floor area for an ancillary building from 80 square metres to 139.35 square metres and to increase the height limit from five metres to 5.79

Drive Smart 2X14 BC Hurry Up and Wait

Occasionally I look at a driver around me in traffic and ask myself “what can they be thinking?” Today I wondered if the driver behind me was thinking at all! Road conditions could be described as typical BC winter driving, but this guy was so close that I couldn’t see snow between the rear of my vehicle and the front of his. I was stuck behind a driver who chose to do 25 km/h in the posted 60 zone. It was a bit slow for my liking but it was slippery and I could not pass safely on the winding road. There was nothing to do but follow patiently behind until conditions changed. I chose to do so about 5 vehicle lengths back so that I had plenty of time to stop if need be. Two other vehicles approached and the front one ended up about 3 meters behind me and stuck there. I was thinking “wonderful, now all that we need is a surprise.” We got one in the form of a fire truck responding to a call. The slow driver moved to one side and kept going and I would have liked to pull over and stop immediately but couldn’t without risking being hit from behind. It costs nothing but a bit of consideration to leave an appropriate gap between you and the vehicle that you are following. In fact it may pay a big dividend by allowing time to react and avoid a situation that would otherwise result in a collision. Think about it. Please. installed with monitors on the bow and stern. “We have been very pleased with the quality of work on our existing vessel,” said Edward Dahlgren of the port authority. “Having two near sis-

building industry.” D a i g l e We l d i n g & Marine has been designing and building EagleCraft custom aluminum boats in Campbell River since 1985. The company has an international reputation for building qual-

ity aluminum boats and have shipped their products around the globe including Russia, Norway, Chile, and the United States. Daigle has built vessels for the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

The pair intend to use the shop to store their 30-foot travel trailer, 30-foot boat, truck and other household equipment. “This is going to be our retirement community and (my husband) wants to be able to work in his shop,” Judy Miller told council. But three neighbours are complaining about the Millers’ shop. Ken Antonelli who lives a street over from the Millers attended the neighbourhood meeting and, according to the couple, was supportive of the project. One month later he

changed his mind. “If the building had a flat roof there would be no problem as the trees that block my view now could be trimmed. But the high pitch roof would always be there and block my view,” Antonelli said in a letter to the city. “I also feel that the bylaws for the builders are there for a reason.” Miller said she didn’t u n d e r s t a n d wh e re Antonelli’s change of heart was coming from. “He says he’s afraid h i s v i ew w i l l b e affected but right now he doesn’t have a view because of a cedar tree on a neighbouring

property,” Miller said. “Our house is a twostorey house, it will be taller than the shop. I don’t see how our shop will block his view any more than our house will.” Neighbour Michael Gajdzik worries the shop will affect his “property value and future development plans.” Miller acknowledged Gajdzik’s house is for sale, but noted it had been for sale months before the couple put in a request for the variance. “To add .7 metres? I don’t know how this would affect selling his property,” Miller said.

“I don’t really understand his objection. I spoke to a couple of realtors about it and they say they don’t think this is so.” Neighbour Robert Dockson is concerned the shop will alter the look and feel of the McDougall Way neighbourhood. But Miller said Dockson was not at the neighbourhood meeting and didn’t see the plans for the building. “I don’t think he has a grasp on what it will look like,” she said. Council agreed and gave unanimous approval for the Millers to build their new shop.

Eagle Society, says thanks The Hornby Eagle Group Projects Society recently honoured MARS founder Maj Birch by presenting her with two pieces of wildlife art. The artwork was donated by wildlife artist Mary Jane Harman. In addition to the artwork, the society made a donation to MARS (Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society) to help continue its important work of helping wildlife. The money was raised by the society through the generosity of its OurNatureZone forum members, online chat room participants, and Facebook friends. The society, which broadcast the Hornby Island Eagle Cam for the prior two years, has seen firsthand the wonderful work done by Birch and her dedicated volunteers. When the Hor nby eaglet, Phoenix, succumbed to aspergillosis in July of 2010, MARS was there to transport

her, examine her, and ensure that a cause of death was found. Later that summer, society members on Hornby Island were involved in the rescue of three eaglets in need of MARS’ tender care. That led to the beginning of the Hornby Ea gle Advanced Response Team. Hor nby eaglets “Decker” (named for the deck where he was found) and “Niner”

and “Brig” (named for the nests where they hatched), were rescued and delivered to MARS. The eaglets were emaciated, yet were nursed to health by MARS and later by the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association. Many tears of joy were shed when the eaglets were released to live their lives as they should, in the wild.

The Transition Society is ready to begin a new training program for the Moms Mentoring Moms Community Based Mentorship Program. Mentors for this program are needed. There will be training provided prior to being matched with

Last season, a Hornby eaglet dubbed “Shredder Helliwell” was rescued by the response team and sent to MARS. Shredder was found in Helliwell Provincial Park and, when in rehab, had a habit of shredding things. Though severely emaciated, Shredder recovered and became another success story when she was released in November at Little Qualicum River. Our View

Another political poll states the obvious For some reason, the latest political poll casting a shadow of gloom and doom over the B.C. Liberal Party is making headlines across the country. The poll, conducted by Forum Research Inc., found that, if a provincial election was held today, the NDP would form government with 57 seats. The poll states the Liberals would be left with 20 seats, while the upstart B.C. Conservatives would win seven ridings. We need yet another poll to state the obvious? From the moment former premier Gordon Campbell signed his political death warrant by foisting the hated HST upon voters mere weeks after winning an election, the B.C. Liberals have been bound for the afterlife now inhabited by the Social Credit, Progressive Conservative and Progressive Democratic Alliance parties.

And, it does not appear anything will change the party’s fate in time to avoid an unpleasant reckoning when voters go to the polls in precisely 474 days. Yes, the HST was the dagger that inflicted the most damage, but there are many other wounds spread throughout the B.C. Liberal body. There is the festering sore than remains the BC Rail scandal and the yet-to-be-answered question as to why taxpayers paid millions to cover the legal bills of two men who pleaded guilty to amended charges stemming from original fraud charges. There is the increased cost of living under the current government, which, while boasting low income-tax rates, remains in the business of raising all manner of fees for services, which are simply another phrase for

“taxes.” Stretched homeowners will feel like rubber as 2012 progresses, based on the dizzying array of increases coming their way. And, the Liberals are afflicted with a leader who simply has not captured the public’s imagination. The latest poll found Christy Clark’s disapproval rate among voters to be at 46 per cent — a double-digit not conducive to re-election and one not surprising considering Clark barely won the Point Grey byelection that got her into the legislature. Short of a rapid unite-the-right movement, British Columbia voters can expect to be referring to “Premier” Adrian Dix in about 16 months. – Black Press

Good point:

More service I have lived in Campbell River for less than two years so my knowledge on the discussions about the new hospital for the area is limited. That we need a new facility is a given, but what is essential is to bring to an end completely the need to go to Victoria for treatment. To have to travel an eighthour round trip for a 20-minute follow-up appointment is crazy. This happened recently to someone I know and to have to do this when you are sick or recovering from surgery, or for whatever reason, is totally unacceptable. Also, when prolonged treatment is needed, as an outpatient it is expected that you fund your stay there – again not acceptable. Not to mention the added stress of the journey affecting whatever condition you may have. With a growing population of retirees, and judging by the family sized homes being built all over the place, many more families moving here, the need to have all of the services in the local area is a must. We should demand nothing less. Jane Davies, Campbell River

Battle continues over log exports and job creation

Brian Kieran

Here’s a puzzler. Last week, Premier Christy Clark was promising coastal truck loggers she won’t kill jobs by banning raw log exports. Next week, Jobs Minister Pat Bell will be in Campbell River almost certainly discussing the possibility of building a new sawmill that would need many of those logs currently being shipped to Asia. The premier set the stage for a rawboned coastal resource policy dust up when she buttered up members of the coastal Truck Loggers Association in an effort to differentiate herself, the jobs protector, from NDP leader Adrian Dix, the jobs killer. “Yes, we would all like to get more value out of B.C. wood. But we are not going to get there by supporting

Adrian Dix’s latest position on log exports. We are not going to get there by banning them,” Clark told truck logger conventioneers. “Why does Adrian Dix seem so intent on throwing people out of work?” Clark exaggerated just a tad. Dix certainly wants to curtail the shipment of unprocessed logs out of B.C. and the majority of British Columbians agree with him. But a total ban is not on the NDP’s agenda. Dix will impose new taxes on log exports to give sawmills an opportunity to get access to wood again. On cue, Truck Loggers Association executive director David Lewis said any curtailment of exports will mean lost jobs. “In the past year log exports have been a huge benefit to the province.

The majority of our coastal timber is uneconomic to harvest if we are selling it to domestic buyers.” In 2010, log exports increased by more than 50 per cent with more sticks shipped to China than in the previous 20 years combined. In the first three months of 2011 coastal operators exported 40 per cent of logs harvested. The battle goes back and forth. Arnold Bercov, president of Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada, Local 8, says an additional 2,400 jobs could have been created on Vancouver Island if the logs sent overseas were processed here. Private Forest Landowners’ Association executive director Rod Bealing says raw log exports make sense because the domestic market for logs

has virtually collapsed and B.C.’s mills are uncompetitive. While the premier is pledging that log exports will continue, her jobs minister, a former Prince George timber executive, does not appear to be buying into the industry premise that coast sawmills can’t compete. This coming Monday, Bell will be in Campbell River to convene a B.C. Jobs Plan regional economic investment pilot project forum. Setting the stage for the forum in December, Bell said, “I have believed for some time that there is the potential for a high-speed second-growth sawmill somewhere on central or northern Vancouver Island. I think it will be a very attractive place to Continued on Page A9

It’s easy to make cutbacks to Coast Guard in Ottawa, but what about us? Decisions made in the warm offices of Ottawa bureaucrats to continually degrade the safety services of the communities of the B.C. coast show negligence of responsibility to the citizens of this area. Reductions intended in Marine Communications and Traffic Services have a very real potential to cost the government more, not less, as response times to incident – ves-

sel accidents, potential spills, etc., will be lengthened. While this will manifest itself to our government in dollars, we on the coast will bear the real cost in loss of lives of our relatives and friends working and being transported on the water and in the air, and we on the coast will bear the loss of habitat affected by spills, etc. MCTS officers are on the front lines of

build a new sawmill and create that value.” Campbell River Mayor Walter Jakeway says, “It’s a great idea and I’m glad he’s thinking that way.” However, the mayor cautions that most of the available island timber is already spoken for. “Western and TimberWest and all the small logging operations have got it all wrapped up. Perhaps the minister knows of a secret supply of timber?” Just maybe Bell’s secret supply is a good chunk of the raw product the premier wants to keep shipping out unprocessed.

response to marine incidents, listening for distress calls, alert for potentially devastating situations. They transfer information to provide the communications needed on this wild and remote coastline.

Once again the citizens of our coast must stand up and speak loudly across thousands of miles that separate us from the bureaucrats that erase essential safety services without regard or understanding of

their impact. Please write your MP and the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and put a stop to shortsighted reductions to the services that we need.

School needs cash fast to buy playground KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Discovery Passage school has finally found a playground, but it needs the community’s help to get it and it needs help fast. The tiny 60-student school near Painter’s Lodge has not had an adequate playground for nearly a year and the school’s parent advisory council has worked tirelessly to fundraise to buy the equipment. The parents recently found a play structure at a discounted price but they are still short on money and the sale ends Jan. 31. “ We h ave c o m e across an amazing deal on a playground, 50 per cent off this unit, said Jessica Taylor, chair of the parent advisory council. “This particular unit is valued at $40,000 on sale for $20,000. Another school is looking at purchasing the same unit which would mean

that would cut the cost of shipping, installation fee, as well as the supervisor fee. But the school is roughly $7,000 short of the $25,000 it needs to purchase the equipment, have it shipped and installed, and put in cement and gravel. “We are asking for cash donations by any companies, local residents, anyone who is able to help us out, Taylor said. “We are a strong g roup of PAC (parent advisory council) members and

we have worked way too hard to throw in the towel now. We are a determined group of parents that want a playground for our children’s school. The six-member parent advisory council has raised more than $8,000 through a fun fair, magazine sales, student Kyle Roemer’s pledges for tackling the Great Walk from Tahsis to Gold River, and a number of other fundraisers. Added to that total is a $10,000 reimburse-

The parent advisory council was left with the responsibility of replacing the equipment because of a lack of funds in the school district budget. Taylor said she hopes there is a company, or individual, out there that is willing to help the parents out. To offer assistance e-mail discoverypassagepac@hotmail.com or drop by the school at 2050 Pengelley Road.

ment from the provincial government for a playground addition the parent advisory council purchased in November 2010. That structure, which is aimed at older kids and can accommodate 18-20 kids at a time, took the parent group seven years to fundraise for. Just after installing the addition, the school district tore down the school’s original playground because of rotten and unsafe beams and posts.

A rising piano star from Sweden via New Mexico will be coming to Campbell River this month. Elias-Axel Pettersson will perform on Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Trinity Presbyterian Church in a concert sponsored by the Campbell River Friends of Music. Pettersson has just completed his Doctorate of Music at the Université de Montréal. He received his earlier musical education in the United States and is already well established as a pianist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher. He maintains a busy concert schedule throughout North America, performing not only standard repertoire, but advocating lesser known and contemporary composers. Pettersson’s doctoral thesis on Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is the foundation for a publication and performance edition. For his Jan. 27 con-

Two major works, The Fantasy in F minor, and the Sonata in B minor will make up the Chopin portion of the program. Leos Janacek, a late nineteenth and early t we n t i e t h c e n t u r y Czech composer, wrote his Sonata “From the Streets” in 1905. This minimalist work will challenge the audience to sit back and let waves of sound wash over it. While in Campbell River, Pettersson will be conducting a series of master classes with local piano students. For more information on these sessions, which are open to auditors, contact Shelley Roberts at (250) 923-7658. Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $10 for students. Gage Windle, 8, of the Campbell River Killer Whales Swim Club races the butterfly during a swim meet in Victoria last weekend.

Killers Whales slash several club records The Campbell River Killer Whales set five club records at the PCS Christmas Cracker Invitational last weekend. Over 800 swimmers and 38 swim clubs from Alberta, Yukon, the United States and B.C. competed at the Commonwealth pool in Victoria. It was the first swim meet of the year where the athletes were able to compete in heats and finals. This just added to the excitement and the Killer Whales thrived. Mackenzie Pading-

ton, 12, delivered an outstanding performance. Padington raced her way to a silver medal in the 100 metre breaststroke, setting a new club record of 1:20.88. She also achieved a bronze medal in the 100 free and 200 free, also setting a new club record. Rounding out her outstanding performances she received a bronze medal in the 200 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 and 100 freestlye. “Mackenzie was really a force to be reckoned with in the

Enrich the life of an adult learner, become a tutor. The experience will change your life! Unfortunately, one in four British Columbians cannot read this sentence. More than half of working age people in BC have difďŹ culty reading, which makes it difďŹ cult for them to be a part of our changing economy. Be a part of the solution! The CR Literacy Association has students who need tutors. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with adults and youth wanting to improve their English skills. Everyone is welcome! More tutors are needed for these programs. Adult Literacy tutors work with learners whose skills in reading, writing, and math are at a low level. ESL tutors work with youth and adults who are learning English as their second language, (reading, writing, and pronunciation). The above programs are free of charge, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia. Training for volunteer tutors will be held in February 2012. If you are interested in becoming a tutor for either program phone 250-923-1275 or email Julina Spetch at info@literacyforall.ca for more information.

Planning for2X14 Life Changes

Local gymnasts own competition

No one can prepare for a disaster like the one Japan recently faced. But the crisis serves as a good reminder to be ready for less shattering events, such as blizzards, hurricanes, and earthquakes that toss a bit of chaos into your life.

The Campbell River Gymnastics Club combined for 43 medals at their first competition of the season. Caitlyn Johnson won a choreography award for her floor routine and the girls came away with tons of ribbons from the Duncan competition. This was the first ever competition for all the level one athletes except for one. In the second sub division Brianna Pollock placed third on vault and bars, won the gold on the beam with one of the only backwalkovers on the beam, and won the bronze in the all around. Jasmine Duguay and Aysha Guenther represented the club in the level one tyro division. Duguay captured the gold on the vault with a silver medal on the bars. Guenther had a fifth place finish on the bars, and received eighth place ribbons on both beam and floor. Next to compete were

The Campbell River Frater nal Order of Eagles Club recently celebrated its 60th anniversary of people helping people in our community. T h e a n n ive r s a r y was commemorated by giving away more than $12,000 to various local organizations including the Food Bank, Search and Rescue, Firefighters Burn Camp, Ann Elmore House, Men’s 2nd Chance, Radiant Life, Meals on Wheels, the Soup Kitchen, Salvation Army, Women’s Centre and the RCMP Dare Program. In the past year alone the Campbell River Eagles have donated more than $90,000 to various charities from money they’ve raised volunteering to do catering and many other fundraisers. “It feels great to be a part of this wonderful group of people,” said Marlene Jordan, L a d i e s ’ Au x i l i a r y President. “Watching our efforts pay off and being able to help groups and individuals less fortunate every month is so rewarding.” Since becoming a chartered club in 1951, the Eagles’ accomplishments included

being the first organization to start bingo in Campbell River, putting on a free annual seniors lunch (typically attended by 275 or more 70-plus-year -olds) for the past 54 years, hosting Halloween parties and other annual events for people with special needs and hosting the annual Friendship Bazaar for the past 30 years. In recent years the club has also directed its time and resources to help out School District 72 by supporting the lunch programs at Cedar, Ripple Rock and Pinecrest Elementary Schools, and org anizing annual gingerbread decorating events which have benefitted hundreds of children. “It’s amazing what a small, committed group of caring people can accomplish when their hearts are in the right place,” said Maureena Wilson, Ladies Auxiliary Secretary. If 2012 is the year to begin making a positive difference in this community for you, give us a call. New members are always more than welcome. For membership details please call Marlene Jordan at 250-286-3171 or e-mail foe3097@telus.net

Donations can be brought to the back entrance of the Museum off 4th Avenue during opening hours, Tuesday through

Sunday, 12-5 p.m. until March 1. Dates for this year’s sale are March 3-7. For more information call 250-287-3103.
