email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com With the number of vehicles parked at the local boat launches, fishermen are getting out and catching some nice winter springs. Saltwater fishing has been good the past few weeks with some nice catches of fish reported around the Lighthouse, Hump and Shelter Point. Other areas to fish for Beach and or springs are Bates Bea Kitty Coleman. Try trolling Luhr Jensen Coyote spoons. Lake fishing continues to be good with nice catches of trout at the local lakes in Campbell River and Courtenay. Fishing off shore Trophy Fish at Tyee Marine with worms, roe or spoons can produce some nice results. The Upper Campbell continues to be a great spot to fish if weather conditions are favorable. With the right water conditions, Steelhead fishing is very good on the Quinsam River. 15 1 pound fish can be caught using the drift ca method of fishing, m Flyfi Fl shing will be better in a few months. Last La year was my first full fu summer of fishing in Campbell River and I have met a lot of nice i people l on the river who are willing to talk fishing and share ideas of places to fish and what to use. The highlight of the year was fishing the Tyee pool with Dave Haddon who has fished the pool for years. I was given a chance to catch the big one and experience ce old fashioned fishing. Fry lake
A great source of fishing information can be obtained at the local tackle shops in Campbell River & Courtenay. The tourist information centers have brochures on the fishing guides. Lodges Dave Haddon Fishing at the Tyee Pool and resorts that cater to saltwater and freshwater fishing in this area. I receive many emails each week here at the fishing corner from readers who want information about the fabulous sport of fishing. I wish all my fishing buddies the best of the holiday season and happy New Year. Fishing guide Harry MacDonald has been a wealth of fishing information and I plan to take a trip with Harry this year.
An 80-pound cougar lurking around the Goose Spit area over the last couple of weeks was relocated north of Campbell River on Dec. 20. “He’s a young male cougar, up and coming, in prime health, beautiful condition,” said Black Creek conservation officer Mike Newton. “That tells us that he’s an efficient hunter; he can look after himself and he just needs to do that in an area away from people.” The cougar was first spotted in the Midden Road area on Dec. 12, when it killed a deer on a resident’s property. Conservation officers used cougar tracking hounds to try to catch the cougar at that time, but “he gave

“We were waiting for the right combination of a good location–where we could set the dogs lose on this cat–and have a decent chance of catching it within daylight hours, and decent tracking conditions, and all the other things that we need to up our chances of success, because it’s not as easy as it might seem,” he explained. On Dec. 20 conservation officers received a call from Morland Road. The cougar had been spotted on a property bordering a wooded area with swamp land. The cougar was successfully “treed,” then tranquilized and transported to a “remote wilderness location” north of Campbell River. Not all cougars are relocated when caught, and Newton said this one’s age and health played a role, as well as the fact that he was not acting unnaturally. “It hadn’t actually physically done anything wrong per say; it was feeding strictly on deer, a natural food source,” explained Newton. “Had this cougar made any move towards a domestic pet–which is their natural next leap from a natural food source they tend to go after domestic dogs or cats–we would have shot the cougar.

$2.8 million for North Vancouver Island skills As part of “Canada Starts Here: The B.C. Jobs Plan”, the provincial government is investing over $2.8 million in eight new skills training programs on the North Island. The programs are part of the Employment Skills Access Initiative (ESA). Why this matters: ● Through ESA, eligible British Columbians are provided with tuitionfree, group-based training at public, post-secondary institutions to prepare them for entry or re-
entry into the labour force. ● ESA training programs are primarily focused on preparing participants for entrylevel employment in industries, sectors or occupations that are currently experiencing, or are projected to experience, labour or skills shortages. “North Island College and VIU have always been leaders when it comes to our post-secondary institutions. This funding means more people will be able to acquire the skills
they need to land good-paying jobs in the future,” said Don McRae, MLA Comox Valley Naomi Yamamoto, Minister of Advanced Education said, “Higher education is key to our province’s growth and prosperity as we develop the workers of the future. Under the BC Jobs Plan, we’re working with our quality postsecondary institutions to increase learning and employment opportunities, building the foundation for a stronger economy.”
Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation said, “This program is another example of our commitment to enhance skills training throughout the province as we work to build an increasingly skilled workforce to meet present and future labour market demands and to provide British Columbians with access to new employment opportunities.” Additional Information: ● ESA programs
are funded within government’s existing fiscal plan. ● Training programs provided through ESA must be at least three weeks in duration, to a maximum of 12 months, with an emphasis on programs that provide participants with provincially or industry-recognized credentials. ● For occupations with established provincial standards for training and certification, training programs must follow
Who will take care of the children? Only 37 per cent of Canadians parents have appointed a guardian A study by BMO Harris Private Banking examining the topic of guardianship among Canadians found that almost two-thirds of Canadian parents (63 per cent) have not named a guardian for their children and/or do not have a will. So why not consider making it a New Year’s resolution to draft a will and identify and appoint a legal guardian for your children? Guardians are legally responsible for the care of a child should something happen to his/her parents. The most legally effective way for parents to identify a guardian is to specify their choice in a will. Although
the majority of respondents have not officially appointed someone as guardian, the survey, conducted by Leger Marketing, revealed that 80 per cent of Canadians with minor children have thought about who they would appoint, with family topping the list: -- Siblings (47 per cent) -- Parents (17 per cent) -- Other family members such as grandparents and aunts/uncles (16 per cent) The study also found that, when appointing a guardian, the overwhelming majority (98 per cent) consider parenting skills to be the most
important factor, followed by financial stability (93 per cent). “It’s good to see that Canadian parents with children under the age of 18 are thinking about who they would have take care of their loved ones, but they need to follow through with the next logical step and make it official,” said Sara Plant, Vice President and National Director Wealth Planning and Trust Services, BMO Harris Private Banking. “If something dire were to happen
and a guardian has not been appointed, the process can become quite complex.” Plant also added that, in order to appoint a guardian, parents should do so in their will. The BMO study indicated that 40 per cent of Canadians with minor children do not have a legal will. The study also found that making the final decision of who to choose can be quite challenging, with almost one-third of respondents (29 per cent) who indicated

that if they had to appoint a guardian they thought the decision would require more consideration than they originally thought.
and meet those standards. ● Participants in the ESA programs must be unemployed individuals who have not established an Employment Insurance claim in the past three years, or five years in the case of maternity/ parental leave. ● The Employment Skills Access Initiative is funded through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement (LMA).

NIDES announces new name and logo
MECHANICAL SPECIAL We will beat any mechanical quote!
North Island Distance Education School (NIDES) is changing with the times, and to reflect this, both the name and branding of the school are changing. Following the district protocol, and working with students, staff, parents, school trustees and a local marketing company, NIDES renamed itself “Navigate”. Although the legal name of the school is still North
Island Distance Education School, for branding and marketing purposes the school will now be known as Navigate. The branding will incorporate both names: “Navigate: powered by NIDES.” “Navigate was chosen because it reflects the school’s commitment to personalized learning, exploration and the sense of being on an educational journey,”
says Stewart. Principal Jeff Stewart says that the name and logo were changed for multiple reasons. Historically NIDES was known as a school for North Island students living at a distance from a brick-and-mortar school. NIDES now serves students in 130 secondary schools throughout BC, over 1,200 cross-enrolled students, and over 1,300 adult student.
