A European tourist died after being swept over Elk Falls Monday morning. A 42-year-old man lost his footing on the rocks and was carried down the river a short way and over the 25-metre falls, Sgt. Craig Massey of the Campbell River RCMP reported. Campbell River Search and Rescue volunteers were involved in recovering the body from the canyon. “Police do caution the public visiting this park area,” Sgt. Massey said. “The scenery is incredible and can often be distracting. Area users are reminded how in the space of one step you can move from dry rocks with solid footing to a wet and dangerous slide into the fast, running water.” Police and Victim Services continue to assist the man’s family in Continued on A2

Police are asking the public to assist them in identifying the persons responsible for this offence. “ Later this same day the proprietor of the Ocean Grove store reported a second set of chains laid out in front of that business suggesting it was also a target location. Investigators have determined that this

criminal cell plans in advance, often stealing vehicles days in advance. These vehicles are then parked in a variety of locations that the suspects can access should they be interrupted. Area residents are encouraged to contact police should they observe vehicles in their neighbourhoods that are not known to them.

dealing with this tragic accident. The name of the victim had not been released prior to press time. Grant Cromer of Campbell River Search and Rescue said the man was deceased when swift water rescue technicians discovered him downstream from the falls. A helicopter was used to retrieve the body. Cromer said this type of incident is becoming all too familiar. “Sadly we have seen this scenario several times before; this is the fourth time in five years we have had to do a recovery in this section of river,” Cromer said. “It’s becoming a routine type of call for us, and we know exactly where and how to approach this situation because we have done it so many times in the past.” Elk Falls is a popular hangout for swimmers in the summer as there are lots of interesting areas to explore, Cromer said, but the whole system from Moose Falls to Elk Falls has its own inherent dangers. While Monday’s incident may have been an accident, it’s a stark reminder to the public of the dangers of playing around water. And the dangers are not limited to the public, search and rescue volunteers are put at risk in rescue or recovery operations. “We put ourselves at risk every time we enter the water,” Cromer said. “A swift water tech was recently killed on a call in Nelson, and that is always in the back of our minds when we do something like this.” For updates on this story, see www.campbellrivermirror.com

Security cameras captured images of a man breaking into the government liquor store on Dogwood Street July 12. At 6:05 a.m. that day, Campbell River RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter to the Government liquor store in the 1400 block of Dogwood Street. Access was gained via a back door, investigators confirmed after a scene examination. Once inside the suspect removed three cases containing liquor. Store security video captured images of the suspect. Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the person responsible for this offence. He is described as male 20-30 years of age 5’10” to 6’ tall approximately 200 pounds. He was wearing tan colored shorts and a black t-shirt with a white logo on the front.

KRISTEN DOUGLAS The federal government plans to enhance the Coast Guard presence in Campbell River over the next couple of years, according to Mayor Charlie Cornfield. At last month’s christening of the new Coast Guard boat, the Cape Palmerston, Cor nfield was told Coast Guard services may be expanded. He was speaking to Vija Poruks, assistant commissioner of Coast Guard, about the replacement of the 70-foot Point Race with the smaller Cape Palmerston, a 47-foot lifeboat, when future plans came up in conversation. “I was joking around and said ‘great, when’s the second boat coming?’” Cornfield said. “I didn’t think one big one for one little one was right considering we’re one of the busiest stations.” That’s when Poruks told Cornfield of the government’s considerations. “I’m hopeful they’ll build a station and of fices and everything,” Cornfield said. “We don’t really have a proper station here. Where do you go if you need to find the Coast Guard? It would be nice to have one here.” Cornfield said he’s not sure how far off a commitment may be

but is optimistic as Poruks plans to return to Campbell River sometime in August. Cor nfield said in reality he would like to see a Navy presence in Campbell River, not a second Coast Guard cutter. “I like to see synergy between departments,” Cornfield said. “You’d have a bigger boat that could provide coastal defence and it would be armed so fisheries could use it, the RCMP could use it, and the Coast Guard could use it.” He said part of the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s decision to replace the Point Race with a smaller vessel was because in Campbell River the Coast Guard doesn’t have a great need for a boat with overnight capabilities. “If you had a Navy cutter, and if you needed an overnight presence, then you could still do it,” Cornfield said. Although bringing a navy boat here may be a long way down the road, Cornfield is still pleased to know the city could have its own Coast Guard station. “Everything is subject to budgets of course but it’s nice to know they’re considering an enhanced presence in Campbell River as we are the service centre for the North Island and the central coast,” he said.

Efficient lawn care is a matter of inches. • Add no more than one inch of water per week (or less), • Raise your lawn mower to its highest setting: three inches, Luisa Richardson • Amend your topsoil to at least four to six inches deep. Why one inch of water or less? It’s a matter of how much water is lost due to evaporation from the soil, and transpiration from the plant. For grass, this amount is slightly less than one inch in one week. If you water infrequently and as deeply as your soil can absorb, you really only need to replace that one inch of water. This works even better if you cut down on evaporation, by raising your lawn mower to its highest setting. The longer grass blade will shade the soil, reducing moisture loss. Leaving more green on the plant reduces the need for it to quickly re-grow, which requires more water. Finally, the deeper your soil, the deeper your roots. So even in the heat of summer, you have evaporation from the top inch of soil while the grass roots are drinking from much farther down. For a green, healthy lawn on little or no water, create islands of shade, aerate and lime in the spring and dethatch if needed. Did you know that average water use triples in summer time and that most of this increase is due to inefficient lawn and garden watering? Increased use at peak periods compromises City of Campbell River firefighting ability and increases operating and capital costs. North Island MLA Claire Trevena will run again for the NDP in the next provincial election. Facing no competition from anyone else, she was acclaimed as the North Island candidate on Saturday in Campbell River. B.C. voters are not scheduled to go to the polls until 2013 but the NDP are preparing for an early election. “Normally my nomination would come much later but this is an opportunity to get ready for an election that could be called at anytime,” Trevena said. “The premier has certainly given every indication she wants to go to the polls early. Industry association puts aquaculture research database online A new inventory of research on salmon aquaculture in Canada has now been posted online and is available to the general public. The Salmon Aquaculture Database is being hosted by the Aquaculture Association of Canada, which has a mandate to disseminate scientific and technical information on aquaculture in Canada, following its development for the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) with funding from the federal government. “This is a g reat resource for anyone who wants a clear idea of the research that has been completed regarding salmon farming in Canada,” said Mary Ellen Walling, Executive Director of the BC Salmon Farmers Association. “It’s really impressive to see the thousands of papers catalogued through the document.” CAIA members had identified the need for a database like this, and as a result a joint industry/government project was

developed to provide funding through the Aquaculture Collaborative Research and Development Program (ACRDP) of DFO. The database itself was developed by the Coastal Aquaculture Research and Training (CART) Network, led

by Dr. Stephen Cross of the University of Victoria, with input from stakeholders across Canada. “The creation of this database is a significant step for knowledge transfer and sharing,” said Ruth Salmon, CAIA Executive Direc-

tor. “Not only does this forum provide free and open access to salmon aquaculture research, the database further reinforces transparency, consistency and cooperation across the aquaculture community.” The database right

now is a review of primary literature, identifying about 3,000 references, spanning the past three decades of research. Each item is recorded by author, date, title,

and a short annotation is provided for each entry. Depending on further funding, future plans for the database include regular updates and transitioning it from

Celebrate the city’s water Waterfest, a watershed protection celebration event to raise awareness about responsible public recreation in the drinking watershed, is scheduled for Saturday, August 20 at McIvor Lake. And the third annual Watershed Clean-up Day is slated for Saturday, August 27. These dates were booked at the City’s June Technical Watershed Committee (TWC) meeting, where representatives shared updates of water protection efforts over the past few months. The TWC is a diverse group of stakeholders and agencies who cooperatively work toward long-term protection of the City of Campbell River’s drinking water source. Ministry of Environment representative, Rosie Barlak, gave an overview of the water quality assessment and objectives report for John Hart Lake and McIvor Lake that, when finalized, will be made available to the public on their website (http://www.env. gov.bc.ca/wat/wq/wq_ objectives.html). The City’s water education contractor, Luisa Richardson, updated the committee on the public watershed tours she developed and coordinated

Take nothing for granted It always takes a tragedy to hit home safety lessons and if there’s anything to be taken from the loss of the life of a visitor to Elk Falls Monday, it’s that we need to be careful when we’re enjoying our natural environment. We say: Danger Grant Cromer of Campbell River Search and Rescue stated the bleak is inherent in facts that tragic occurrences happen our vast outdoor all too often because people don’t realize the potential danger. As a playground community, we were lucky that a group of young people did not lose their lives earlier this summer inner tubing down the river. The

warning was put out then by CRSAR that there are inherent dangers in enjoying our great outdoors. Monday’s accident shows you can’t take anything for granted, even a seemingly benign situation like the flat rocks around the Campbell River above Elk Falls. The tragedy of accidents is that you can’t predict when they’re going to happen. They occur because circumstances were unforseen due to a plethora of reasons: unfamiliarity with the place, recklessness or what have you. Cromer said Monday’s accident is a stark reminder to the public on the dangers of playing around water: “You have no control over water, water will control

you, if it’s not the current, it’s the temperature or hazards in the water, and you are at its mercy. Swift moving water with a waterfall like in this case is a worst case scenario; there is no way to recover from a fall in fast moving water above a waterfall. Keeping well back from the edges and using only dedicated viewing platforms and trails is essential for personal safety.” It’s sad that one family will forever associate Campbell River with unspeakable loss and our condolences go out to those people. There’s no blame to ascribe, things happen, we just all have to keep the dangers in mind when we venture into natural areas.

Good point: Chickens I have a serious concern in regards to Kristen Douglas’ article ‘Chicken debate returns to roost.’ Should we allow people to have farm animals in our backyards like chickens? When I was growing up we lived in the country where chickens could run and peck at their food, etc., but I also remember the rats. The rats would live under the chicken shed or areas where they had a chance to get into the pen or coup to get food or kill a small chick or steal an egg. Rats carry diseases and will become an extermination nightmare. Once you get them they still seem to come back. Even if you get rid of them out of your yard they seem to find a way to come back. When we arrived in Campbell River 20 years ago, the home we bought on South McCarthy Street had a compost out in the backyard. We used it diligently to recycle all the things that should go into the compost. One day my wife mentioned to me she thought she saw the compost move. So I decided to dig up the compost to turn the dirt and the compost and there they were, baby rats. We had a whole family ‘roosting’ in the compost box. I began the extermination of the rodents. Well this did not stop the varmints. They came back. They came back for the next five years, but I always caught them in time before they could get established. Do not get me wrong, I would love to have chickens in my backyard and have fresh eggs daily, but I have a wife who is allergic to chickens, not their eggs, and Continued on A11

My summer road trip to the B.C. Interior began as soon as the TransCanada Highway reopened at Chilliwack. The crew had worked through the night to clear a mudslide studded with rocks the size of Smart cars, along with a couple of actual cars. We headed up the historic canyon route from Hope to Yale to Cache Creek, the Fraser River still surging a month after it should have settled back. At Ashcroft, river rafters bravely bobbed on the brown torrent. The Williams Lake Stampede went ahead between rain showers, bull riders benefiting from soft conditions while barrel racers struggled.

We drove to Prince George and then Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of B.C., where the Nechako River looked ready to climb out of its banks. As we arrived news came that all this thundering water had done its work, toppling a hydroelectric tower at Surrey, briefly closing the TransCanada Highway again. One family member was unable to come down from Chetwynd for a visit. He was cut off by a staggering 16 washouts of Highway 97 north of Prince George in the Pine Pass, which winds through the Hart Range. This stretch of road has long been a contender for the most extreme mountain conditions in B.C., but one night of torrential rain tore it up beyond

anything seen in my lifetime. This pass is the only road link from southern B.C. to the vast Northeast. The rains would keep coming around Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, disrupting farms, natural gas development, a coal mine and a wind farm with floods and washouts. The transportation ministry and its contractors had a winding track open through the Pine Pass construction zone within days, an amazing effort to restore essential freight traffic into the region that has emerged as B.C.’s main economic engine. But reconstruction will likely take the rest of the summer. We were back in Victoria by the time the Fraser River finally crested

at the Mission gauge after six weeks of high water, its latest peak since 1920. During the trip, gasoline prices reached a high of $1.31, nudged up slightly by the latest increase in the carbon tax as well as political turmoil overseas. This is B.C.’s largely symbolic nod to the concern that extreme weather events are accelerating due to huge consumption of fossil fuels and emissions of greenhouse gases. I’ve been careful not to make any sweeping statements about the evolving science of climate change. The carbon footprint is negligible because we have egg producers right here on Vancouver Island. You just have to drive down-Island to see the eggs being produced. In a summer that seems to be holding back on nice weather, perhaps it’s time for a ‘feel good’ story. I have nothing but admiration and praise for the City, Rotary, 2 Hills Renovation and the Sybil Andrews Heritage Society for the fantastic work that has been accomplished in the renovations of the Sybil Andrews Cottage and Walter Morgan Studio. The process to realize this project was many years in the making. The vision, dedication and hard work that went into this project is a shining example of what a community can do when pulling together. As the first official property on Campbell River’s Heritage Registry, the Cottage and Studio are destined to become a major focal point

for promoting cultural tourism and the creative economy in this area. Sybil Andrews’ legacy in the international art world continues to grow. The fact that the Cottage (completed) and Studio (ongoing through Rotary’s efforts) are being respected and honoured by our community, demonstrates that Campbell River is a culturally-rich and historically-profound city. No doubt there is much more work to do in town, but the success of everyone’s efforts in this restoration bodes well for our future. Margaret (Peggy) Minnie Chapman Dec. 8, 1926 - July 16, 2011

Margaret was born December 8, 1926 in Laross, Saskatchewan. Raised by a widowed single Mom during the depression, and having lived in a number of locations on Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the Okanagan, Margaret had a practical outlook on life. On August 27, 1952 she married the one love of her life, Stuart Chapman and lived on Stuart Island until Stuartâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death in 1968. With two children to raise, Margaret moved to Campbell River in 1969 where she got work with School Dist 72 as a custodian. After retirement, Margaret was active in the Campbell River Genealogy Society, Campbell River Fish and Wildlife Assn, and the Ripple Rock Power Squadron. Margaret was pre-deceased by her husband Stuart, October 9,1968, her Mother Irene Jonas in 1971 and her brother Ken Jonas in 1990. She is survived and will be forever missed by her children Lorraine Cox (Greg) and Arran Chapman (Janice), her sister Irene Wilson, her grandchildren Dayton Cox (Jody-Lynn), Brittany Cox (Chris Richardson), Stuart Chapman (Lisa Clarke) and Darcie Chapman (Brandon Nielsen) and her two great grandsons Logan Humphries and Dreaden Cox. A service of remembrance will be held at Suttons Funeral Home, Saturday July 23, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Refreshments to follow at Noon at the Elks Lodge, just across the parking lot. The Great Curb Appeal campaign begins “Everyone likes to be recognized and thanked for a job well done.” So says Communities in Bloom Committee chair Nigel Lambeth reflecting on the committee’s latest project. Anyone in Campbell River may nominate their neighbours for outstanding efforts t h at c o n t i nu o u s ly improve the appearance of their neighbourhood. Just call the City Parks department (250-286-7275) or visit the City of Campbell River website (www. campbellriver.ca) after July 22 to share your good neighbour’s street address. Nominated neighbours will be thanked by a volunteer from the Communities in Bloom Committee and presented with a colourful doorknob hanger, that lets the community know that this effort is recognized and really appreciated. The campaign runs from July 22 to August 31 after which its success will be evaluated to help decide if it should return next year. So, if you’ve often

admired your neighbours’ properties and the work they do to keep up appearances, now is your opportunity to say “Thanks for a job well done!” In a related effort, the Communities in Bloom committee will also present an attractive window decal to businesses in Campbell River that demonstrate support for the goals of Communities in Bloom. Businesses with consistently neat and tidy premises will also be recognized. This initiative, which originated in the Willow Point Beautification survey recently reported upon, will run throughout the year and encompass all types of commercial establishment in our area. Wearable Art show returns The artists participating in the Wearable Art Fashion Show at the Campbell River Art Gallery this Saturday have reached new heights as they prepare their pieces for the public to see. Tara Hope, a Courtenay self-taught artist with a passion for recycling, turns to everyday materials in her home to create dazzling wearable art. In the 2010 Wearable Art Fashion Show, Hope stunned the audience with a piece made of recycled bread bags. This year, she turned to plastic milk jugs for inspiration when she created a piece called “MilkMade,” loosely based on what milk maids historically wore. “I am able to make the pieces from excess materials that I have at home as a mother and housewife,” Hope said. “It’s exciting for me to work with things that would have ended up in the recycling.” Hope has been creating wearable art for years and says there’s nothing like it. “What draws me to it is the

total freedom of expression,” she said. Artist Joanne Pringle agrees. Pringle is a sculptor originally from the B.C. Interior who has created her piece, called “Beach Bride,” from recycled paper mixed with glue, which creates a clay. Pringle says she loves that her piece pushes papier mache to the limits. “This is my first wearable art piece,” she said. “The Beach Bride idea came to me and I had just to follow my intuition.” Campbell River artist and art teacher Leanne Longeway’s concern for the environment inspired her to use the types of plastics that are polluting our Pacific Ocean to build a work of art that reflects an oceanic theme. The Campbell River Art Gallery’s Wearable Art Fashion Show and Silent Auction, is slated for 7 p.m. at the Gallery. Tickets are $30 and include hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar. Zed Skimboards hosted its second annual Skimboarding showcase at Saratoga Beach on Saturday. The Island Skim session focused on flatland skimboarding, where riders skim across shallow water on a unique board, incorporating ramps and rails. Top prospect Campbell River Minor baseball player Jamie Severs was selected for Baseball BC prospects camp July 19-21 at Whalley Stadium in Surrey. Severs will play on the Grade 9 team in the high performance camp whose players make up the select team B.C. through open ID camps throughout the province. Severs will compete against 11 other top pitchers from B.C. for a spot on the team.

Will the Westshore Stingers win as many games this season as they did last year? Absolutely. That’s because the perennial Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League door mats – who ceased operations in December last year after going 0-14-0 – are sitting out until the 2012-13 season, the VIJHL announced this week. The Island Jr. B circuit has released its regular season schedule for the 2011-12 season, and with the Stingers on the sidelines the Kerry Park Islanders have been moved into the South Island division.
