Now, they plan to flag potential offenders. Utilizing the distinctive “Be Whale Wise” logo as a template, local whale-
watching businesses have designed and created flags that will alert other boaters that whales are in the vicinity and to take caution and reduce speed. “We’re asking people who fly this flag to put it up when they’re watching whales,” said Jim Borrowman of Orcella Expeditions. “If you’re out boating and you see this flag, it means you’re in the vicinity of whales. So please
slow down.” The flag employs a bright yellow, orange and red circle with the tail fluke of a whale. It mimics the logo used by Be Whale Wise, which shows how far boaters must remain from whales and which is recognized by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and NOAA Fisheries in the U.S. The idea for the flag germinated during discussions between Borrowman and local biologist Jackie
Hildering five or six years ago, as they sought a way to protect whales from increasing boat traffic in area waters. The first flags, produced by June Brothers Tent and Awning in Victoria, were made last season. Borrowman spread the word this spring at a preseason meeting that drew 45 people from North Island whale-watching and kayak operators, Cont. on Page 7

Since starting the first recognized commercial whalewatching operation with then-partner Bill Mackay in 1980, Borrowman has seen dramatic growth in the number of people on the water seeking a close look at the killer whales and humpback whales who swim in North Island waters. He said word has
gotten out to private boaters that, to view killer whales, they should go where the whale-watching boats are. Borrowman said he has seen these personal craft come racing up to his own boat on numerous occasions, sometimes motoring right over the top of a travelling pod while oblivious to the potential danger. “There’s a lot of pressure on us to get closer. Everyone wants to hug a whale,” Borrowman said. “We thought if we flew
a flag when we’re watching whales, that people could see and investigate before coming up at high speed.” On a recent expedition in Johnstone Strait aboard his original whale-watching boat, the Gikumi, Borrowman flew the flag when he came upon a pod of transient killer whales. His former vessel, the Lukwa, sailed by the new owners of Stubbs Island Whale Watching, was also in

With more than 120 artisans, a variety of food vendors, kids’ activities and a cool music lineup ďŹ lling the nine-acre waterfront park, the event has earned a reputation as one of the best outdoor festivals in Canada. Visitors will ďŹ nd Barclay in the Filberg Heritage Lodge, along with a selection of her landscape paintings. Her work is ďŹ lled with light and colour, what she considers the key elements of a painting. “As a visual artist, light has a direct impact on colour so I’m always searching for that magical moment of great light,â€? Barclay explains. “Light changes everything. If it’s at it doesn’t inspire me at all.â€? What she is inspired by is nature. So she spends lots of time “rambling aroundâ€? with her camera watching the way light interacts with plants, sky and water. Back in her studio, the photos are used as a reference
to spark the memory of the experience and then Barclay lets her imagination kick in. Acrylics used to be Barclay’s medium of choice but a couple of years ago she switched to oils. “I felt like it was time for a change. Maybe it had something to do with turning 50,â€? she says. “Oil is deďŹ nitely more technical and more of a challenge. That’s part of what keeps me learning and interested in my craft.â€? Barclay spends winters in Portland, Ore., and the summer months painting on Hornby Island. “I lived here for six years and love coming back,â€? she says. “I love painting the local area and my studio – an outďŹ tter’s tent – is open to the public so I get to meet people too. It’s very rewarding to get that direct feedback.â€? Barclay paints for ďŹ ve hours most days. “Each piece seems to have a life of its own,â€? she says. “I start a painting and it just takes off. I’m more interested in evoking a feeling or mood than a realistic image.â€? Although a lot

She obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of British Columbia and a Fine Arts Diploma at Malaspina College, now Vancouver Island University. â€?Painting’s more challenging than most people realize,â€? Barclay says. “There’s a lot of repetitive movement involved and that can be hard on the body. And the technical aspect seems to get harder as you progress, I guess because you get more particular about your work. “But the most difďŹ cult thing is to just put aside all the other stuff in your life and paint,â€? she adds. “Most of what I know I learned by working on my own.â€?
