“This beautiful heron didn’t seem to mind posing for me,” says MidWeek reader Pam Twin of Courtenay. “I love the way the sunlight is hitting him in all the right places, allowing for an intimate view of the details on his feathers.” Twin spotted the bird while walking along the Fisherman’s Wharf in Campbell River. debris floating in coastal waters as a threat to birds and mammals that become entangled in rope, nets and plastic or mistake the trash for food. The Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve is of particular importance. It was established in 1982 to protect killer whale habitat, and is a popular rubbing beach for the North Island’s resident orca population. Dedeluk said much of the reserve’s shoreline contained relatively little garbage, with one beach at the western end of the reserve serving as a catchment area for most of the trash. The volunteer crew was able to finish its clean-up effort there and move on to more trash collection at Boat Bay, eventually hauling several small boatloads of garbage to Seven Mile Landfill for disposal. The haul included everything from the usual marine flotsam like rope, nets, anchor chain, styrofoam, plastics and wood, to shoes, a sling shot and even a baby soother. “We left feeling both satisfied and frustrated, as we had cleaned a few of our local Northern Vancouver Island beaches,” said Dedluk. “Yet we had only scratched the surface.” Transport to the cleanup site was provided by Jim and Mary Borrowman of Orcella Expeditions. Volunteers represented Cetus, Pacific Orca Society, the Young Naturalists Club of B.C.’s Northern Vancouver Island chapter, Marine Education and Research Society, ‘Namgis First Nation, BC Parks staff and Telegraph Cove Resort. BC Parks provided support with a Communities for Conservation grant.

Landmark lodge celebrates 20 years Philip Stone Special to Midweek Perched atop the striking sand cliffs of Cape Mudge, Quadra Island, Tsa-KwaLuten Lodge is a local landmark and a proud testament to the millennia-rich culture of the Kwa’ Kwa’ Ka’ Wa’Kw First Nation. While a couple of decades are a drop in the ocean when reflecting on the history that has been wrought on these shores and waters, celebrating a milestone for the Tsa-Kwa-Luten certainly signals that

A luncheon was held June 5 to commemorate Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge’s 20th anniversary. The Quadra Island resort was created through the insight and effort of the Kwa’Kwa’Ka’Wa’Kw First Nation. the Lodge is now very much a part of that lore. On Sunday, June 5 the Lodge hosted a 20th anniversary luncheon to mark the occasion. Chief Ralph Dick, Hereditary Chief Don Assu, Chief Robert Joseph from Alert Bay, along with members of the TsaKwa-Luten Board of Directors, MLA Claire Trevena and other dignitaries were on

hand to enjoy a fine, delicious meal and local wine served with the friendly hospitality that the Lodge has become renowned for. The attendees arrived, mingled and were seated. Chief Robert Joseph began with a Kwakwala prayer. Chief Ralph Dick recounted some of the early history and planning for the Lodge. “Our Elders saw

that the good times we had enjoyed from fishing were ending and had the vision to look for new opportunities,” he recalled. “Don Assu met with the band council and decided they could raise the money.” It was a slow start as for two years the representative from the Ministry of Indian Affairs stalled progress. Finally, after hiring a

lobbyist, the minister herself visited and things began to roll. In 1991, after over a year of construction, TsaKwa-Luten opened its doors to welcome its first guests. Slowly but surely, the lodge built its reputation on excellent customer service and developing a solid team of longterm staff. Today General Manager Carol Ann Terreberry points to that as being one of their keys to success. “The Board of Directors are great to work with,” she said. “And we have quite the staff team. Our head chef, head housekeeper, head of maintenance, night security and our front desk manager have all been working together for over 13 years.” “When I go on the road I know the lodge is in safe hands,” said Terreberry.

Making a difference to lives of many Black Press North Island College student Misaki Yoneda, an international student from Japan, put her ideas, creativity and determination to work to raise $1,000 for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Although not from Sendai where the most significant damage occurred, Yoneda was devastated watching the news footage and wanted to demonstrate her support. Her enthusiasm and compassion were contagious. Using the North Island College (NIC) International Facebook page, she recruited three other students, Oleksandra Yaniuk, Julie van Egteren and Nadine Biggs, to assist with the fundraising efforts. “People seemed to want to do something, they just weren’t sure what,” said van Egteren. “So we came together to give people the opportunity to act. It just seemed like the right thing to do.” Yoneda began by creating personalized donation boxes, and

Misaki Yoneda (left), Julie van Egteren, Oleksandra Yaniuk and Nadine Biggs with the donation boxes they created to help Japanese earthquake victims. Photo submitted. the team brainstormed as to how to make the most impact with their combined efforts. Eight collection boxes were placed around the campuses at high traffic locations, such as the library, bookstore, student services and the cafeteria. “We set our fundraising target with high hopes but thought it would be difficult to reach the $1,000 mark,” said Biggs. To kick things off, the team set up a table in the cafeteria to get the word out about

their project. They raised $200 that first day. Over the course of their four-week campaign, they hosted a bake sale, arranged to have a booth at various college events and sold homemade sushi – 220 pieces in less than 90

minutes. “We were so well supported,” continued Biggs. “Five more international students helped out, the staff at the bookstore were hugely helpful, the cafeteria employees donated all their tips, and we were

If alpha- tocopherol is taken without the other four naturally occurring tocopherols found in vitamin E, there results a deficiency in gamma tocopherol which might explain the increased risk of heart failure with alpha-tocopherol alone. Naturopathic physicians have for years been recommending the mixed tocopherol form of vitamin E to avoid these types of deficiencies. The same holds true for magnesium. Pincott... From Page 10 that I have never in my 26 years of practice, prescribed calcium without magnesium and other minerals such as boron, manganese and zinc. Magnesium is one of the most common deficiencies in North America. Magnesium has a number of cardioprotective effects: it inhibits clot formation, promotes vasodilation of arteries, regulates the rhythm of the heart, plays a role in production of ATP (the main energy source of the body), promotes the uptake of potassium within the cells, lowers blood pressure and raises HDL, the

good cholesterol. Magnesium deficiency is rampant in our society due to low dietary intake, depletions by physical and emotional stresses, and taking a calcium supplement alone can cause a magnesium deficiency over time. Calcium supplementation has also been associated with the increased risk of kidney stones. Once again, it was found that taking magnesium inhibits the crystallization of calcium oxalate in the urine and taking magnesium supplementation has been reported to decrease the recurrence rate of kidney stones by 90 per cent in recurrent stone

formers. It has been clearly established that adequate calcium intake is important for achieving optimal peak bone mass and for preventing osteoporosis. I told Michelle that this calcium containing mineral supplement that I had recommended is also my number one remedy for treating general aches and pains and helping people sleep at night. I assured Michelle that the reporters forgot to report that calcium supplementation “when taken alone” is the risk and when taken with magnesium in a 2:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium there would be no risk.

There are many over the counter calcium products on the market in chewable form advertised to prevent osteoporosis and treat heart burn but these are all calcium carbonate products that do not contain magnesium. It is these products that I do not recommend. It was found that when vitamin D was added to these calcium

supplements that the heart disease risk did not go down. Michelle was happy to get back onto the mineral supplement that I recommended to her, as she did feel much better when she was taking it. Dr. Ingrid Pincott, Naturopathic Physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www.Dr Pincott.com
