Motorcyclist strikes tree, dies PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A young man who died in a motorcycle accident Saturday night was one of three Campbell River men charged with manslaughter.

Jacob Lawrence, 20, succumbed to his injuries at Campbell River hospital following the accident. According to RCMP, it was sometime after 7 p.m. when Lawrence was riding along the Argonaut Main logging road, at

Highway 28, when he lost control of the motorcycle and struck a tree. Lawrence was charged last year in connection with the death of Christopher Smythe. The 28-year-old fish farmer died Continued on A3

A group of teenage boys narrowly escaped death on the Campbell River Sunday – just two days after a swiftwater rescue specialist warned the community about the danger to inner tubers posed by a fallen tree. “Okay, this is my time. I am going to die now,” Blaine Olney remembers thinking when he was underneath another youth who was entangled in the same tree. Olney was under Tyler Scorgie who was also facing up to the possibility that his life could end soon. “Todd (French) yelled at me, and Todd’s quiet, but he yelled saying ‘Just keep your toes up’ and this is where I felt the most fear I have ever felt in my life,” said Scorgie. “I knew that this was it, I was

sure the end was near and that there was no way I was getting out of this alive, literally.” Scorgie, Olney, French and three other boys – Ryan Chickite, Bailey Boschman and Landon Walters – had decided to tube down the river on Sunday. Some of them had done it the day before and even encountered the same tree without mishap. The tree sticks out into a channel on the north side of the river. It came down the slope during a mud slide last December. Jamie Turko, a swiftwater rescue specialist with Campbell River Search and Rescue contacted the Mirror last week to warn the community about the very thing that happened on Sunday. “It’s called a strainer,” Turko said about the maple tree the youths got tangled up in. “The Continued on A3

River: Hazardous tree to be removed from channel on Friday

PAUL RUDAN/THE MIRROR

Postal picket Unionized postal workers had out leaflets to passersby in front of the Canada Post outlet at Tyee Plaza on Friday afternoon. Rotating strikes across the country is expected to limit mail delivery to three days a week.

Accident: Rider was facing charges Continued from A1

of injuries a few days after he was found beaten and unconscious outside a townhouse complex at 555 Rockland Rd., in the early morning hours of Feb. 27, 2010.

Tyler Pastuck, 25, and Derek Crowther, 21, were also charged with murder, but last December, the charges were reduced to manslaughter. All three men had pleaded not guilty.

Continued from A1 main current comes right down and pushes right into this big old maple there that’s fallen in. Any of the tubers or swimmers or air mattresses are going to be sucked right into it.” Prophetic words. On Sunday, the six youths decided to tie all their inner tubes together and float down the river. Nobody knows what was different Sunday, compared to their run on Saturday, but for some reason, the inner tubes were swept straight towards the tree. A few metres before the strainer is a smaller tree that was bouncing up and down in the current. That tree hit the group first. “The bouncing branch hit most of us in the head or torso,” Scorgie said. “But after that it was hell. “The tubes flipped and everyone was everywhere. “ Then they continued to be swept toward the strainer that Turko had warned everyone about. “We were swimming as hard as we could to get away from the tree,” Olney said. French was the first to hit it and everyone followed in. “All I remember was getting sucked in,” Olney said. Scorgie was forced against the tree trying to get out and Olney was pressed against him. Scorgie told the story on Facebook: “I was slammed into the tree. I was pulled under for who knows how long, but it felt like hours to me. I pulled my head out above the water, just enough to grab some air. By

now two of my friends have gotten through. “Todd had somehow managed to get on top of a larger submerged branch. As my legs were jammed, twisted, and unable to move because of the currents and the tree, Todd tried pulling me up. “But the branch I had most of my weight on broke, releasing one of my legs. Todd pulled on me again and by this time I moved up a lot. I was still jammed between the two branches but I was kneeling on them now.” This was Scorgie’s most terrifying moment. “We’re only 16 and this was close to death for us,” he said. “But I trusted my friend, and I jumped, covered my head and kept my toes up, after bumping and scraping across a few more branches I popped out back into the usual currents.” Jarring Scorgie loose freed Olney momentarily only to get jammed again. “I was under the water for like three minutes,” Olney said in an interview with the Mirror. “That was the point where I thought I am not getting out of here at all.” But Olney managed to get some “wiggle room” and came free. He felt his head roll under the main trunk of the tree and he popped up on the other side “gasping for air.” He then continued to float down the channel to a shallow point of land where it met the main course of the river. He joined up with Walters and Boschman who had floated free earlier. Shortly afterwards Scorgie came floating down. Chickite and French were the last to

get free of the tree. They freed the tubes and then floated past the point, unable to land at the same place. They met up later on the road. The two boys who spoke to the Mirror, Scorgie and Olney, were still shaken up Monday and were happy to hear that the tree in question is being removed Friday. The experience was terrifying at times, surreal at others. Olney said when he was under the water there was just a lot of bubbles but because he was pumped full of adrenaline, he doesn’t remember there being any noise. He attributes his escape from the tree’s clutches to realizing that he had to calm himself while under the water. He also recognizes that French’s actions in freeing Scorgie freed him from the first branch. Scorgie, meanwhile, has no doubt who was the hero in the situation. “But this is a story I’ll probably remember forever,” he said. “And Todd will probably be my friend forever – he saved my life. No joking involved.” The youths didn’t just tube down the river on a whim. Their parents insisted they have a plan and made sure they had life jackets as well as adults waiting at both ends. But as Olney’s mother Shelly says, “Bad things happen, even when you are prepared.” She wants the community to understand how close they came to losing four boys on Sunday. On Friday, Turko, Steve Harding of Timberwolf Tree Services and others will meet to remove the tree.

Landfill to cost millions KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Closure of the Campbell River landfill will cost millions of dollars in an effort to get the dump up to code and add years to its life span. The closure process would include construction of a wall that can increase capacity. That is expected to cost between $8.3-$10.3 million, according to a report the Comox

Strathcona Solid Waste Management Board is due to vote on Thursday. The construction components will include systems to collect gas, storm water and leachate. As well there will be a final cover system to address original deficiencies at the dump. When the landfill was built 38 years ago, a system to collect and treat leachate – a potentially toxic liquid cre-

ated when waste mixes with rain water – was never installed, and the dump was deemed to be not in compliance with BC Landfill Criteria, set by the provincial Ministry of Environment. Further complicating matters is landscaping, specifically the lower portion of the landfill slope along Argonaut Road and the north landfill slope, which are geotechnically unstable for closure

construction. “The steep slopes, in addition to being an unstable area of the landfill, are in violation of Ministry of Environment criteria,” said Tom Boatman, the region’s manager of solid waste, in a report to the Waste Management Board. “These unstable, very steep slope lower slopes were constructed before the present contractor began operation of the facility. struction, these slopes will be reinforced or altered to be able to provide a stable foundation.” Boatman’s report recommends the use of a earthern wall to help stabilize the slopes, while at the same time extend the nearly-full landfill for another five years. The landfill is projected to be completely full within the next six to eight months, and once that happens, a transfer station is expected to replace the dump for about one year, until construction at the landfill is complete. “As capacity at the Campbell River landfill approaches, transfer of solid waste to the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre is scheduled to begin,” said Boatman. “To enable the implementation of solid waste transfer from Campbell River to the Comox Valley, a temporary transfer station is being built.” Residents will still be able to drop their garbage off at the dump, but instead of the waste remaining at the dump, it will be trucked to the Pigeon Lake landfill in Cumberland. A preliminary construction schedule reveals the district plans to complete the transfer station in November and begin construction on the landfill closure in April 2012.

The city will likely spend $20,000, which it did not budget for, to mow the grass in neighbourhood parks after the city’s neglect caused an uproar in many neighbourhoods. During budget discussions, city council opted to take $26,000 out of the parks and recreation budget and reduce grass cutting in 10 neighbourhood parks and seven tot lots from once every two weeks to two times per season. That decision appeared to backfire on the city after residents complained loudly enough to force City Manager Andy Laidlaw to reexamine the issue. “The unusually vigorous grass growth this spring was not anticipated and the

city has responded to community concerns by restoring the service level for grass mowing in these parks,” said Laidlaw. “T he reduction in service levels prompted significant community concern with respect to aesthetics, health and safety of these areas.” In some cases, people took it upon themselves to maintain their neighbourhood park. Residents in the Marina Boulevard area mowed the grass in Lilelana Park as did Cambridge Drive residents who cut the tall grass in Cambridge Park, and organized a “Mowathon” last weekend. Laidlaw said he directed city staff to reimplement the original mowing schedule last week and believes it will cost the city $20,000,

Plato is just one of many who have been hit by the introduction of the combined federal and provincial sales tax, says provincial NDP leader Adrian Dix, who spoke, along with North Island MLA Claire Trevena, at the Sundance Java Bar Monday morning. Dix met with a crowd of about 30 people to encourage Campbell Riverites to vote “yes” in the referendum which will ask voters: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Har monized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)?” Dix said scrapping the HST will not only lift the tax burden off the shoulders of families and small businesses but help British Columbians regain a sense of democracy. “This week you’ll be getting your HST ballots in the mail and it’s very important to understand that you have to vote ‘yes’ in order to scrap the HST because of the way the referendum question is worded,” said Dix, who labels the tax as

to a wide variety of local growing conditions and climate (from rocky ledges to rich soils, full sun to full shade, very dry to very wet) • There is no shortage of colours and variety • Watering is not required after about 2 years • Plants will establish a natural balance with native wildlife (insects, birds) and reduce the need for pesticides • You will gain an increased understanding of the Campbell River “bioregion” and enrich your “sense of place”. Interested? First examine what you have growing already. Are there any volunteer native plants? Do you know the difference between native and introduced species? Obtain the plants or seeds from a reputable nursery, rather than from the wild. Transplanting wild plants has a low success rate and may be destructive to natural habitats. If harvesting seeds from the wild, don’t pick more than 10% of the fruit/seeds available in one area. Avoid “wildflower” seed packets, which may not include local plants. Start small (choose an easily manageable area) and plant as crowded a mix of low to tall plants as your budget allows. The plants will become established before the common weeds take over. Match the plant to the light and moisture conditions in your garden: shade, sun, dappled; wet, dry or fluctuating water-table. Be creative and enjoy watching nature flourish in your yard. Average water use triples in summer time and most of this increase is due to inefficient lawn watering. Increased use at peak periods compromises City of CR fire-fighting ability and increases operating and capital costs. For more resources on naturescaping, or other water conservation tips, visit the CCR website or call or e-mail the water hotline: 250-203-2316, water.wise@ campbellriver.ca. Written by Luisa E. Richardson, Water Conservation Educator with the City of Campbell River since 2006.

Our View

Let’s be careful out there The outdoor adventure playground that makes Campbell River a wonderful place to live and visit can also turn deadly on a moment’s notice. We say: Be aware That’s what some Campbell River youths learned on the river last of the dangers weekend. A benign float down the in our natural river on inner tubes one day turned into a life and death struggle the playground next day at the very same spot. That the six young men involved in the harrowing incident survived is a great blessing for them and

their families. Their survival serves as a reminder to all those who would play in this natural environment that they need to be aware of the potential risks and take steps to mitigate them. These youths were doing what hundreds have done before them without mishap but conditions change even from day to day, never mind season to season. That search and rescue swiftwater specialist Jamie Turko predicted the possibility of just such an incident only days before also reminds us that we do have knowledgeable professionals who can provide the training that allows us to enjoy the natural

adventure that lies on our doorstep. Take advantage of it. Nobody is saying that we should shy away from our great outdoors but it is important to be aware of the risks and prepare yourself to deal with them. There are many organizations that teach and preach these principles. But being prepared is no guarantee either. Things still happen to the most skilled outdoorspeople. It’s their training and knowledge that gets them through the ordeal. We’re thankful the group of youngsters on the river Sunday came through unhurt. Let their story serve as a reminder to all.

Good point: City hall I recently read the letter to your paper from D. McGillis, which you entitled “Good Point: Highway”. In his letter Mr. McGillis lauded those who had improved Highway 19 (the Island Highway). While I understand that he was trying to look at the positive aspect of the recent project, I think the letter would have been better entitled “Missed the Point.” I, like most others, want Campbell River to look beautiful, and pleasant roadways through the the city are part of making this a good place to live. But surely when a major north/south roadway is upgraded, the first matter of concern is public safety, which requires that the road be designed to easily allow emergency vehicles to travel on it. For instance, did this stretch of roadway really need sidewalks on both sides? As well, wouldn’t some thought to adequate public parking have been a good idea and a budget that could provide for its maintenance? The issue for me is not beauty, but rather thoughtfulness in the planning. Which takes me to the recent letter from Dan Samson He suggested that the Island Highway be renamed Marine Drive. His letter might have been entitled Poor Timing. He has some odd notion that the speed on this road must be “moderate to slow” and that it is for pedestrians, not vehicles. Again, no one denies that the waterfront is an important part of our city’s character and perhaps someday this roadway might be a place primarily for people instead of traffic flow. But the fact is that presently this is a major roadway, moving peoContinued on A19

Most people say tax my car, not my income

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

I recently bought a used vehicle. Bitter experience with used cars sold privately led me to make the purchase at an established, reputable dealership, and I’m pleased with the result. The first car I ever bought was a private sale. A young man showed off the old car he had painted himself, while his mother smiled and offered homemade lemonade. Sold for $600. The choice of drink proved appropriate when the engine clattered to a final halt a week later. It was then I discovered that the crankcase contained mostly STP Oil Treatment, to conceal the engine’s true state. At the dealership this spring, the harmonized sales tax was not a hot

topic. Like most goods, new and used vehicles were subject to 12 per cent PST and GST before, and they are subject to 12 per cent HST now. When I mentioned this in a news report last week, an astute reader in Nanaimo reminded me that it’s not quite that simple. Vehicles, boats and aircraft sold by private individuals are exempt from GST. This was one of the populist concessions the Mulroney government made in an effort to placate angry voters 20 years ago. In B.C., prior to July 2010, private sales were subject to seven-per-cent PST only. During the hubbub over the implementation of the HST in its 2010 budget, the B.C. Liberal government

also increased tax on private vehicle sales by five per cent, from seven to 12 per cent. The stated reason was to provide “comparable treatment” for private and commercial sales of used vehicles. This provoked an exchange of partisan accusations that typically passes for debate in the B.C. legislature. It’s a payoff to car dealers, the NDP screamed. You guys opposed all of our income tax cuts and now you’re pretending to support lower taxes, the B.C. Liberals yelled back. Out in the real world, one can observe the effect of a tax structure that gives an advantage to private sellers. Municipal governments call them

“curbers.” They use their garage, driveway and street to repair and market an endless series of used cars. Whether they are crooks or not, their efforts are every bit as appealing to the neighbourhood as the guy with multiple illegal suites whose tenants plug up the parking for the whole block. In each case, they violate zoning rules and hog services for personal benefit. And if you think they pay income or other taxes on their home businesses, I have a 1973 Pinto you might want to test-drive. CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Campbell River hockey fans watching the Canucks in the Stanley Cup playoffs this year will have seen the Salmon Capital of the World’s name in the Cheetah Power Surge commercial on Hockey Night in Canada. And it’s all thanks to local radio personality Dave Reynolds of 99.7 The River. “We knew each other from a past life when he was in Toronto,” said Cheetah Power

Surge owner Frank D’Angelo on the phone from Toronto. “He told me how he loves where he is.” Cheetah was doing the commercial and Reynolds volunteered to do the voice-over announcing on the commercial. Reynolds didn’t have to fly back east to do the job, the state of digital recording is such that performers don’t have to be in the same room or even the same province, D’Angelo pointed out. In return for the voice-over announc-

ing, D’Angelo agreed to put in a shout-out to Campbell River which appears at the end in a red banner on the bottom of the screen that says “Thanks to Dave Reynolds from Campbell River, B.C. Salmon Capital of the World.” D’Angelo is the goalie in the commercial and when he stops the puck a message comes on the screen saying, “Big Save. Like catching salmon in Campbell River, B.C.” D’Angelo heard so many positive things

about Campbell River he’s thinking he should come out and see it. If he does, he’ll certainly get a warm welcome from the Campbell River Food Bank. D’Angelo also made a $5,000 donation to the Food Bank after Reynolds told him about the challenges the food bank here and everywhere in the country face. “I didn’t know how bad a shape they are in,” D’Angelo said. Campbell Riverites will remember how important the food bank is to Reynolds.

For two years in a row he has lived in truck trailer at Christmas time until it gets filled with food donations for the Campbell River Food Bank. D’Angelo is convinced about the importance of the food bank to communities around the country and plans to make donations to other food banks in other communities. The Cheetah Power Surge commercial appears on the broadcast just before Don Cherry’s Coaches Corner segment.

Council: Focus on providing basic services webcam. We need a council that focuses on providing basic services and needs, and not on incidentals. This is apparently a city which at this point in its life can’t afford to have its park lawns cut regularly. There are weeds and wild grass left growing along most city boulevards. The traffic flow through this city is a mess due to the disastrous changes to the

Dogwood lights. Whereas Mr. Samson would like to make the Island Highway an idyllic drive, I want traffic flow throughout the city which minimizes the noise of speeding cars, noisy trucks, and now motorcycles which presently roar up and down Alder and along the side streets which connect Alder and Dogwood. And as well, I would appreciate some traffic enforcement by

our police. Further, our city council should be spending its money and time to build up a vital downtown area, to encourage small businesses downtown which will interest potential and present citizens and pay reasonable municipal taxes. A proliferation of big box stores does not set us apart from other communities. Finally, there needs to

be a system of accountability by council and by city staff. I’m tired of costly mistakes and the lack of courage to address real issues. For me, strong services and good management are the keys to making this an attractive city to visit and live in. Once we have these, we can consider name ch a n g e s a n d we b cams. BC Hydro’s ready for question period The annual BC Hydro Campbell River System open house will take place on June 22, from 4-8 p.m., at the Coast Discovery Inn. Capital project staff will be available to discuss dam safety upgrade works completed at Strathcona Dam last fall and to be started at John Hart Dam this summer, and the John Hart Generation Station Replacement Project. Staff will also be available to discuss the challenging hydroelectric operations year given the near-record snow pack. “This is one-stop shopping for the general public to come out and learn, ask questions, and provide input to BC Hydro’s Campbell River System hydroelectric projects,” says BC Hydro spokesman Stephen Watson. “For the John Hart project, we have been collaborating with key stakeholders and agencies for years, and it has been very helpful to understand and consider community perspectives as the project evolves.” The John Hart Generating Station has been in operation for more than 60 years. There are river flow interruption concerns and potential impacts to fish, the need for seismic upgrades, and replacing equipment that has reliability issues.

Hydro encourages the public to come out to hear about the status of the project, and to also learn about commitments made to the Canyon View Trail, river access, Brewster Lake Road Bridge, to how it is collaborating and working with local and regional business leaders on possible economic benefits during construction. The procurement and regulatory processes are expected to begin later this year. An upgrade project to a section of the John Hart earthfill dam, near the Spillway Dam, will take place around mid-August to end of September. Staff will go over the project, the closure to the Brewster Lake Road during construction, and the detour route. Staff will also be available to discuss the unique and successful Strathcona Dam Intake Tower Upgrade project completed last fall. BC Hydro’s Campbell River System operations engineer will go over the historical water inflows, inflow forecasts and the operational considerations for various water use interests. This discussion will include possible reservoir levels and river flows through the summer.

The idea is to create Campbell River’s own Music Festival to showcase some of our very talented local musicians all the while raising funds to support the operations of the Campbell River & North Island Transition Society. The Transition Society operates Ann Elmore House, a

shelter for women and children fleeing abuse or violence. Every year over 250 women and children stay at Ann Elmore House. Ann Elmore House is named after Ann (Elmore) Haig-Brown who lived at the Festival site from 1936 until her death in 1990. While raising her family, caring for the farm, and typing Roderick’s manuscripts, Ann was also involved on many committees and volunteer activities. Somehow Ann also found time to house women in need. Mark the day in your calendar and plan to attend. Tickets are available at The Music Plant, Sundance Java Bar and the Transition Society - $25 for adults, $10 for teens (15-19) and children enter for free.

13 local gardens to inspire you N

ew treats and old favourites are in store June 25 and June 26 during the annual Campbell River Garden and Art Tour. There are thirteen gardens on offer this year, eight of which are new to the tour. As always, you’ll find an inspiring mix of styles, plantings and sizes of gardens, from Jack Oja’s sweeping borders that overlook Discovery Passage to urban pocket gardens loaded with individuality. In the latter category is Jan Tees’ garden, where she’s retained mature plants in a newly created design. Reta Davis, a returning highlight, has used whimsical “found objects” to add charm to her city lot. As in the past, you’ll find artists at work in

some of the gardens, to capture the scene. Among the larger gardens is that of Laurie Jensen and Eldon Brown, another returning favourite. Laurie and Eldon’s one-acre property was laid out using Feng Shui to create harmony and their home was designed to fit into this setting, with views into lush garden

“rooms,” backed by forested trails. There are some noteworthy ideas for gardening with the environment in mind too. The City’s rooftop garden, which has substantially reduced heating costs, will be opened at set times on Saturday and the Community Garden and Compost Education Center will have

Elaine “the compost diva” on hand to provide how-to tips. June and Frank Greens, returning to the tour after a few years hiatus, transformed a shady rubble pit into a Victorian-style garden with more than 100 roses. Another new feature this year is a tour of the gardens on Sunday, June 26 by bicycle

with ‘Joy Rides’ cycle tours. Participants can bring their own bike or rent one from Joy Rides. Tickets are $40 (if you have your own bike) or $50 with a bicycle rental. Call 250-830-8522 to register. Or you can opt to take the tour by bus at $18 per person. Call the City’s Community Centre to book your spot at 250-286-1161. Seats are limited! Tickets for the selfguided Garden & Art Tour are $15 per person. Purchase tickets at the Gallery, at the Visitor Info Center or at the Willows Market. Call for more info: 250287-2261 or visit: www. crartgallery.ca.

On the tour will be a visit to a spectacular westcoast style house designed by local architect, Jay Crowder. Meet Ron McNaughton, the landscaper of this home who won the Gold Award at the Georgie Awards for BC in 2008 and both the house and the 12 foot glass totem pole were award finalists in the same competition.

CR ART GALLERY

Also on the agenda is the home of a professor Emeritus of the U of Calgary in Art History and a major international museum consultant. He will speak to us about his collection of early African Art. He has curated exhibitions of African Art worldwide and has consulted and advised on a number of television documentaries. We will end up at a beautiful waterfront home where you will meet many of the local artists represented in the collection there. Peewee Ravens shake off road lag

ALISTAIR TAYLOR/THE MIRROR

Here’s the pitch Pitcher Darian Swift delivers a fastball during Saturday’s peewee division game between the White Soc and the Yankees.

Ravens in tough against league leaders After a successful Burger Night Fundraiser on Thursday, the Saratoga Ventures Jr B Ravens had their second weekend in a row on the road. This time they faced off against the first place Cowichan team in their home barn, traditionally known as the “big stick.” Although everyone knew this could be a tough match with Cowichan at 7-0 in the season

standings, the “big stick” had mostly Ravens fans who made the road trip to cheer on the boys. It was a hard-fought g ame from the star t. Hayden Smith would get four goals throughout the game, finding the corners with assists from Thomas Marks, Brayden Howes and Eddy Lawson. Lawson would get a goal of his own with a pass from Smith,

and Blair Freer would also score on a pass from Matt Lund. Although the Ravens tied up the game a couple of times and the defensive end worked hard to push players out of the scoring zone, they would have a tough break with penalities and played a lot of the game short handed. In the third period the Cowichan goalie would

save all 13 shots on net while Cowichan would score three unanswered goals in the same timeframe. The game would end 11-6 for Cowichan. After two weekends on the road, the Jr B Ravens will regroup and hope for some points this coming weekend when they take on both Nanaimo and Vic Esquimalt, the two teams the Ravens have been able

to defeat so far this season. The boys will play a double header with a road trip to Nanaimo on Saturday and a home game on Father’s Day at Rod Brind’Amour Arena, both scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start. Come early and cheer loud for the Jr Ravens on Sunday, June 19. Tickets are $3 and minor Ravens players get in free wearing their jersey.

The Subway Peewee B Ravens made the jour ney over “The Hump” on Saturday to play the Port Alberni Tyees in their secondto-last regular season lacrosse game. Unfortunately, the altitude seemed to wreak havoc upon a few of the players, at least at the start of the game. Although team captain Nolan Fair was back in the line-up for this game, Lukas Lund, Jasper OsterhouteCode and Caleb Vivier were called up from the Co-op Peewee C team as assistant captain Reilly Doney has been put on injured reserve with a broken right wrist. Doney suffered the injury at school while enjoying some well-ear ned “freetime” near the end of the day. The Ravens seemed to be out-of-sorts at the start of the game with the Tyees taking an early lead fifteen seconds into the first period. There were moments when the team was executing what has become their trademark stifling defence and quick, short-pass transition game but they seemed to be few and far between. The Tyees Continued on B2

were looking to avenge their 19-4 loss earlier in the season to the Ravens and were quite content to get into a rope-a-dope game while trying to take advantage of their offensive chances. Goalie Caleb Vivier made several excellent saves to keep the score close. He also came out to move the ball up to teammates on the

attack which helped preserve precious seconds on the shot clock. The Tyees scored their second goal before Will McLean scored the first goal for the Ravens at 11:04. The Tyees scored another to end the period with a 3-1 lead. The second period saw a much more concerted effort from the Ravens. They made things difficult for the Tyees and were

rewarded when Lukas Lund scored at 16:50. Their renewed approach to teamdefence helped to keep the Tyees power-play from being effective. The Tyees scored their fourth goal at 12:09 of the second and took a 4-2 lead into intermission. Tyees coaching staff were overheard during the break trying to keep their team’s spirits up by trotting out the phrases from Coaching 101 playbook: “We’re the better team than they are. Let’s teach them to lose!” The Ravens coaches, meanwhile, reminded the Ravens of the keys to their team defence; contacting, controlling, coordinating, communicating. Contact with the other player. Controlling where they are allowed to go or not go. Co-ordinating with teammates to work together to limit the offensive play and get the ball back. Communicating so teammates are aware of where a pick is, where help is coming from or where help is needed.

By this time the Ravens had shaken off their travel bug and were ready to rock and roll. Thomas Dunn came into the game and made key saves to start the period. Lukas Lund scored his second of the game at 15:40 to cue the Ravens comeback. The scoresheet says Will McLean scored his second of the game at 12:59 but McLean confirmed that Zach L o n t aya o a c t u a l ly scored the goal to tie the score. Quin Nelson scored at 9:07 to seal the deal for a 5-4 Ravens victory. Head coach Todd Fair said, “This team is working really hard on the defensive side of the floor, and it shows. Jeff and Diane Lontayao have brought their basketball coaching skills and some of their drills to the Peewee division and that’s made a huge difference. “Players like Jasper, Lukas and Tyler Dickson have come in and fit right in because they understand what

we’re trying to do as a team. “We’re keeping the play to the outside and helping our goalies by getting sticks up to block many of their cross-court passes. Players know, accept and seem to enjoy the basic defensive philosophies we’re teaching them in practice. Our team is first in our division in goals against. “Even after excluding three games that were forfeits (which resulted in one win and two ties), we’ve only allowed 43 goals in 12 games played. That’s less than four goals per game which is pretty amazing considering that we’ve got quite a few first year players and haven’t had a consistent line-up over the past few games. “Our players deserve a lot of credit for doing the heavy-lifting on defence which springs our attack. We’re getting the ball to the right player at the right time…it’s really been fun to watch the team effort and growth to date.”

Drakes search for a mate in late summer and will stay with her until they mate the following spring, the female will build the nest and take care of the young whilst the males will take off and begin their feather moult.

A normal clutch of eggs for these ducks is between 12 and 14, sadly only a few will ever survive to reach adulthood as many other wildlife species will dine on the eggs or the vulnerable ducklings. This is all part of nature’s food chain. Ducklings are “precotial meaning they hatch fully clad in fluffy down, their eyes are wide open and a soon as their down dries they are able to walk, swim, dive and feed themselves. However they do need they mother to protect them and keep them warm during the night, she also needs to teach them their hunting and survival skills. Once all her eggs have hatched the mothers immediate focus is to lead her brood to the nearest body of water, asap, which frequently is a route fraught with danger. Often nest sites are far from a water source, some ducks even nest in trees; sometimes due

to the number of hatchlings the mother can only take half the ducklings hiding the rest until she can come back for them. Roads or other human obstacles are encountered along the way and the time when ducklings are “kidnapped on the assumption they are orphaned. MARS has already received 14 ducklings’ which are high maintenance needing warmth and comfort from heat lamps and other ducklings. Once they have been conditioned and become waterproof they are introduced to our “swan pond where they can swim and dabble for food. It always amazes me how fast they grow and usually within four to six weeks are ready to be released back to the wild. Please watch and wait before intervening with ducklings or any other baby wildlife (we received the first two fawns of the season this week.

Peter (Pleun) van Reeuwyk April 3, 1915 -June 10, 2011

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Peter van Reeuwyk. Dad was born in Zoetermeer, Holland, the fourth of eight children by Neeltje and Hendrik van Reeuwijk. Peter was predeceased in 2002 by his wife Mary; granddaughter Lisa van Reeuwyk (1999); as well as 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He was a fair and honest man who loved his wife and children deeply. Peter and Mary were wed in 1940. They were inseparable, best friends from the start and are now reunited. Peter is survived by his three children Maria (Dave) Danis; Bram (Carol) van Reeuwyk; and Yolanda (Craig) Turnbull. His 6 grandchildren, Steve Danis, Mike (Kristen) Danis, Richard (Lisa-Marie) van Reeuwyk; Lana (Paul) Proznick; Shannon Turnbull and Mark (Kaylee)Turnbull. Also survived by ten greatgrandchildren Matteo, Lorenzo and Dominic Danis; Molly, Mathew and McCall Danis; SoďŹ a and Summer van Reeuwyk; Chase and Sydney Proznick. Peter, Mary and their three children immigrated to Canada in December 1951, traveling across Canada by train from Halifax and ending their journey in Vancouver. From Vancouver, Peter found employment at the Comox Airbase as a construction labourer. The family then settled in the Comox Valley. In 1955 Peter became an agent for Comox Co-op Creamery to sell and distribute dairy products in the North Island area and the family relocated to Campbell River. Peter’s business developed very successfully and in 1969 he sold to Fraser Valley Milk Producers (Dairyland) who had merged with Comox Creamery. Peter worked for Dairyland until 1971 and then focused on his other business interests including property development in Courtenay. For many years, Peter and Mary enjoyed their family, their church, ďŹ shing, their Foreshore walks and many other pleasures of Campbell River. They travelled extensively including several trips to visit their relatives in Holland and twenty seven winters in the California sun. The family extends a special thank you to his many friends, CR Baptist Church, the caregivers at Yucalta Lodge, Vesna (Caregiver) and especially Dr. Veerapen for their expertise, empathy, kindness and prayers during dad’s care. Services will be held at Campbell River Baptist Church at 1:00pm Friday, June 17, 2011 followed by interment at the Elk Falls Cemetery. Donations may be made in the memory of Peter to the Campbell River Hospice Society.

PELLETIER, Delphis Joseph Dec. 24, 1922 - June 6, 2011

Lede Charlotte

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a gentle soul, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

1922- 2011

Charlotte Martha Lede was born in Gruneberg, Poland on June 10, 1922 and died on her 89th birthday at Glacier View Lodge, Courtenay. At the age of 20 she married Eugene Lede in Poland and had 2 children before coming to Canada in 1948.They spent 11 years in the Fraser Valley working for several farmers and had a small dairy farm in Cloverdale. In 1959, pregnant with her fourth daughter, Charlotte and her family moved to Black Creek and started a dairy farm on Hamm Rd. where they farmed and worked very hard for many years. She faced and conquered many challenges in life. After retiring from farming she moved to Courtenay.

Del is survived by his loving wife Bette, son Richard, daughter-in-law Judy, granddaughter Debbie-Lynn (Michael), grandson Dean (Amber) and four great grandchildren Tristan, Alexandra, Dylan and Carter. He is also survived by three sisters Denise, Pauline (Jack) and Yvette (Eric) and brother Andy. Del served in the RCAF in WW2 and became a Chef, later working in Calgary and Edmonton Hospitals and then the Vancouver Hotel. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to the building of the famous Dels Drive-In in Campbell River and his love for real estate inspired commercial projects and businesses.

Charlotte was a wonderful Mother, Oma, aunt, and friend to many. Her greatest pleasure was being with her family and friends sharing her delicious meals. Her other interests included singing, gardening, and travelling extensively, spending many wonderful winters in Desert Hot Springs, California. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church. Predeceased by her husband Eugene in 1980, her parents Johann and Katherine Bauer, and her 5 siblings. She is survived by her four daughters Lilli Doberstein (Dieter), Inge Koschack(Werner), Alma Lyschik(Helmut),and Charlotte Schwanicke(Andy). She is also survived by eight grandchildren Fred (Teresa), Rick (Jay), Jim (Sarah) Doberstein, Karin and Bob (Corinne) Koschack, Dan Lyschik (Krissy) and Cindy (Mark) Edwards and Kristi Schwanicke, as well as 18 greatgrandchildren, and extended family. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout a very memorable life. Our heartfelt thanks to the many supportive staff at Glacier View Lodge. Because of their loving and caring hands, Charlotte was able to courageously face her many limitations and greet all with a smile that could light up a room. Memorial donations in memory of Charlotte may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 1688 McPhee Ave, Courtenay or Glacier View Lodge, Back Rd. Courtenay, BC. The funeral will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Interment at the Black Creek Cemetery, with refreshments and fellowship to follow at the Black Creek Hall. Please join us in celebrating Charlotte’s life by visiting our Memorial at www.piercysmtwashingtonfuneral.com through the personal Guest Book; we invite you to share your thoughts and memories with our family.
