A commercial fisherman who is suing Fisheries and Oceans Canada has been fined $120,000 in Campbell River provincial court for unlawful possession of halibut and rockfish. “The sentence is disappointing. I don’t know how a pensioner is going to pay for this,” said lawyer Phil Scarisbrick, who represents Gerald Dalum. Scarisbrick has filed an appeal, but Dalum’s days as an independent fisherman are more or less over. He still has his 65-foot long-liner Double Decker that’s tied up in Cowichan Bay, but due to the outstanding fine, his fishing licences are worthless. “Basically, they’re saying I deliberately made $90,000 to retire on,” said Dalum during a phone interview. “I don’t like fishing politics and I don’t like the quota system.” Dalum, 67, has been commercial fishing since 1968. Typically, he brought in 100,000 pounds of halibut and rockfish. When Dalum returned to Port Hardy from a fishing trip in March 2007, he was carrying approximately 31,000 pounds of halibut over his quota as well an excess of various rockfish. But this wasn’t unusual. In the past, he would buy quota from other licence holders in order to make up for the overage. According to court documents,

in previous fishing seasons Dalum bought extra quota from Blake Tipton of SM Products. But in 2007, he did not do so and had arranged from two other fishermen to buy extra quota. However, when the two fishermen apparently reneged on the verbal agreement, Dalum believed he had no other choice but to sell the fish to SM Products. He also assumed that Tipton would deduct $90,000 in quota fees, but this never occurred. “For reasons unknown, Tipton, although he purchased the fish, would not or could not provide quota,” wrote Scarisbrick, in a document filed with the court. As a result, Dalum was charged with nine counts of possessing fish over his limit, but five of those charges were stayed by Crown counsel Digby Kier after Dalum obtained quota. Continued on A3

“One of the reasons that the Crown cites for staying counts 5-9 is the good faith effort of the defendant to secure quota only two months after the halibut trip,” wrote Scarisbrick. “This goes to the character and belies the likelihood of the defendant deliberately failing – as the Crown contends – to obtain quota in order to save $90,000.” But Judge Brian Saunderson didn’t see it that way. “In short, Mr. Dalum took a calculated risk in purchasing insufficient quota,” the judge said in a written decision. “One of the guiding principles of the Plan states that, ‘Fishers will be individually accountable for their catch.’ That

is a clear warning that non-compliance with the fisheries regulations will result in sanctions.” During sentencing last week, the Crown was seeking $147,000 in fines from Dalum and his selfowned company G.P. Dalum Enterprises Ltd. In the end, Judge Saunderson levied a $120,000 fine. While Scarisbrick has filed an appeal, Dalum is still battling Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) on another front. Dalum runs the website fishingforfreedom.ca and in December 2007, he helped fund a class action lawsuit against DFO on behalf of commercial halibut fishermen. The still pending lawsuit claims that DFO withheld 10 per cent of the annual halibut harvest from 2001-2006.

Coun. Claire Moglove admits reducing the frequency of grass cutting in neighbourhood parks and tot lots was “a mistake” which council will correct. Grass growing more than a foot long in some parks prompted outrage from several residents, who were angry the city cut back grass mowing from once every two weeks to just two times per season. Council made the decision to reduce grass cutting during March’s budget planning in order to cut $26,000 out of the parks and recreation budget. “I think I voted in favour of this cut, but I don’t have any hesita-

the city’s surplus this year to the parks and recreation budget. Moglove disagreed with the recommendation, saying it would negate the decision, to reduce the parks and rec budget, that was made during financial planning. “With an operating budget of $34 million, there’s got to be a way to find $20,000 without undoing the cuts we made,” she said. “It goes against the grain to take it from the surplus, I think we have to look farther.” Coun. Ziggy Stewart said anger over parks not being mowed demonstrates just how tough it is for council to make budget cuts while balancing quality of life for citizens. “We were tasked with

a job to get the budget back under control and obviously this $20,000 decision is not the right decision and I can accept that,” said Stewart. “Obviously the public wants this but as we go along, costs are escalating all over the place, something eventually has to fall off the table. “A simple $20,000 decision and look at the furor it created. Good luck next year.” In the end, the issue was referred back to city staff for a another report outlining other areas in the budget where the money could come from. Although the funding source is still unknown, grass cutting in neighbourhood parks and tot lots was underway last week.

He said part of the problem was “unusually vigorous grass growth this spring that was not anticipated.” To correct the problem, Laidlaw suggested $20,000 be moved from

T he goal of the program is to make offenders fully aware of the harm they have caused in the hope they commit no further offences. During the first quarter of 2011, there have already been 10 restorative justice forums for theft under $5,000, one for mischief under $5,000, two for mischief over $5,000, one for making a fraudulent ICBC claim, one for fraud and one for uttering threats. “The majority of offenders were youth, but approximately 30 per cent of referrals were adults,” noted Gelinas. In other areas of policing: ■ A crime analyst was hired in May. ■ Police will continue to conduct “bar walks” and report concerns to the Liquor Inspector. ■ Prolific prohibited drivers will continue to be targeted by police. These are typically motorists with impaired driving convictions who continue to drive, and two were arrested during the first quarter of 2011.

2011 compared to six for the same period last year. Part of the spike relates to the multiple thefts of valuable copper wire, mainly from construction and work sites. Frauds are also up, 31 this year compared to 24 in 2010, but the total number of criminal offences is down from 1,139 to 992. Other positive news, according to RCMP Insp. Lyle Gelinas, is the growing success of the local Crime Stoppers and Restorative Justice programs. “Crime Stoppers has shown a substantial increase in all areas,” Gelinas wrote in his report to city council. “This has been created by a large expansion in the media coverage…” Comparing numbers for the first quarters in 2010 and 2011: tips to Crime Stoppers are up from 49 to 59; more cases have been cleared, from 26 to 48; more awards have been paid to tipsters, from one to four; and the value of rewards is also up from $100 to $600. The numbers are also increasing for Restorative Justice. This program re-routes offenders from the court system to restorative jus-

Blackberry Port

Native to the Americas, Blackberries are bursting with intense fruit flavours. Often used to describe Cabernet Sauvignon, blackberry aromas are deep and richly fruity. This, along with lingering tannins and a gorgeous deep purple hue make it an excellent foil for the broad richness of Port. Bright berry notes lift up this wine, making it a superb foil for intense cheeses, roasted nuts and especially chocolate desserts. Oak: Toasted Sweetness: 7 Body: Full Alcohol by volume: 15% - 16.5%

Chocolate Raspberry Port *Gold medal winner at the 2010 WineMaker Amateur Wine Competition.* Hugely popular last year, this wine is bursting with rich, intense flavours and aromas, has traditional Port character of warm, rounded cherry and plum, supported by a racy zing of bright raspberry. Perfumed and gently tart with luscious liquid chocolate, beguiling with dark, bittersweet aromas of coffee and vanilla. Toasty hints of oak guide the way to a long, rich finish. Excellent within three months, this wine will age gorgeously – if you can keep any that long! Oak: Toasted Sweetness: 7 Body: Full Alcohol by volume: 15% - 16.5%

Okanagan Peach Icewine Style *Gold medal winner at the 2010 WineMaker Amateur Wine Competition.* The Okanagan Valley lies in the rain shadow of British Columbia’s Coastal mountains. The region’s very low annual average rainfall means that part of the valley is a true desert! In this climate grapes ripen to perfect intensity, with notes of honey, apricot, and spice. Winexpert’s Okanagan Peach Icewine style has deep floral notes, stone fruit and perfect sweetness, balanced with the sun-ripened perfume of a luscious peach. Campbell River to be pretty in pink The Campbell River will be in the pink June 21 and 23. Literally. As part of a river flow test down the Elk Falls Canyon, BC Hydro will turn the Campbell River’s water pink. “To better understand possible fish habitat implications, we’ll be using a pink, watersoluble fluorescent dye called Rhodamine, which is commonly used as a ground and surface water tracer in hydrological studies,” says BC Hydro’s Senior Environmental Coordinator, Don Reid. “This pink dye is benign and will be placed into the river just above Elk Falls. The water going over the falls will turn pink for less than a minute. The river will turn pink for a brief time three to four times per day, and as it moves downstream the colour will dilute and diminish. The dye is not anticipated to have any impacts to fish and fish habitat. Depending on how quickly the coloured water moves down the canyon, over a range of river flows, we will have a better picture of fish rearing habitat or refuge areas. As part of the test, we’ll also place a small number of coloured gravel cobbles in key areas of

the construction of the replacement facility,” Reid says. “The transfer of water flows from the current facility to the replacement generating station will require a spill, and each of the three John Hart pipelines that carry large volumes of water will be taken out of service at least once during final construction and commissioning, so we need to know what the impact may be on the environment, and if so, how to mitigate it.” Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations have approved the flow tests. Public awareness signage explaining the pink colour hue will be placed downstream of the generating station to the logging bridge. “We remind the public that releasing anything into the river without consulting the proper agencies is strongly discouraged,” adds Reid. It’s possible that if all relevant data collection is obtained and is conclusive from the June 21 test, then the June 23 flow test would be cancelled. BC Hydro will slowly increase the canyon water flow over the day.

sonal river flow. This means they will modify generating station discharge and water releases from the John Hart Spillway Dam so that appropriate water levels flow past First Island. At one point on both June 21 and June 23, there may be no water discharge from the generating station so that river flows downstream remain unchanged. “Safety is our top priority so public river recreation from our property won’t be allowed during the tests due to potentially hazardous flow fluctuations, and people need to stay out of the upper Campbell River, particularly above Elk Falls,” Watson says. Public safety signage will be placed along the river to provide notice of the higher river flows at and above the generating station given the active recreation season. BC Hydro environment experts are leading a consultant team to learn as much as possible from the tests. “This flow test will provide impor tant study information to the John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project, which we expect will spill water into the canyon during

the canyon to measure gravel movement.” BC Hydro is carrying out studies in preparation for the environmental assessment process for the John Hart Generating Station Replacement Project. On June 21, BC Hydro will be increasing the canyon water flow from John Hart Dam from the base flow of about four cubic metres per second (m3/s) to a maximum of 120 m3/s and bring the canyon flow back to four m3/s by the end of the day. On June 23, they will repeat the same river flow test process. The controlled flow tests are required to better understand total gas pressure (TGP), fish presence, fish habitat at various flow levels, and canyon gravel movement thresholds, Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson says. TGP is the opposite of the bends that people can get when diving. It occurs when too much air is forced into the water column where it may enter a fish’s body potentially leading to mortality. High water flow velocities can move gravel and impact fish habitat. BC Hydro has a water license that allows for a maximum sea-

rated it a probable factor in the longer term trend of diminishing salmon returns. Dr. Peter Ross, a marine mammal toxicologist at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ Institute of Oceans Sciences, said there’s growing concern about the discharge of persistent chemicals that accumulate in the environment and threaten fish and sea life. Emerging chemicals of concer n include flame retardants such as PBDEs, bisphenolA, phthlates, nanoparticles, synthetic musks and personal care products. “PBDEs have been doubling every 3.5 years in harbour seals in the Strait of Georgia, Ross said, adding very high concentrations have been found in sediments near Metro Vancouver’s sewage treatment outfalls and in Burrard Inlet. Such chemicals might not kill fish outright but may pose more subtle threats, even at minute levels, the commission heard. Endocrine disruptors can interfere with

hormones and in some cases feminize fish. They can also reduced growth and suppress immune systems. Panelists said sockeye need to “smell their way back home to their birth streams to spawn and the soup of chemicals mixed into the waters of Georgia Strait and the Fraser River could confuse them and reduce their chances. Sewage treatment plant monitoring relies on tests of how many sample fish exposed to effluent die within four days but don’t specifically test for many chemicals or consider their long er ter m cumulative impacts. “From my perspective, that has very little to do with the real world, Ross said. He supported broader testing of effluent for such chemicals and

said he tried but failed to persuade federal officials to make that a requirement in new standards Ottawa has set out to govern sewage treatment. Ross said tests should look at not just the impact of individual chemicals but the complex mixtures that can form and interact unpredictably in the receiving waters. There are also concerns the rules leave plant operators in charge of monitoring, what Ross called a “fox in the hen house situation. Metro Vancouver plans to spend $1.4 billion to upg rade its Lions Gate and Iona sewage treatment plants to more advanced secondary treatment over the next two decades to comply with the new federal standards. But the inquiry also heard doubts over whether the Annacis Island treatment plant – considered the region’s most advanced – used the best design when it was upgraded several years ago. It uses a trickling filter system that AshContinued on A9

Inquiry: Public awareness needed Continued from A9 ley said is far inferior to an activated sludge design in removing many endocrine disrupting chemicals. The Lower Mainland isn’t the only problem area for contamination. Ninety different sewage treatment systems discharge into the Fraser as well as pulp mills and other sources of industrial effluent. Still more sources discharge from other shores of the Strait of Georgia. Monitoring of toxins in local waters has declined, the inquiry heard, since DFO in 2005 dismantled its contaminants research program. It was assumed Environment Canada would take up that work, but that never happened, leaving some DFO researchers to fundraise to carry on independently. Pa n e l i s t s l a u d e d past efforts by various

agencies to reduce the amounts of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and detergents going down the drains, but said more public awareness is needed. The scientists also expressed concer n about raw sewage releases when older combined storm/sanitary sewers in Vancouver and New Westminster are overwhelmed by heavy rainfalls. The Cohen commission was named after the collapse of the 2009 sockeye run, when just over a million fish returned, about a tenth the expected number.

Drive Smart BC Speed Kills, or Does 2XFULL TYEE CHEVit?

“Speed Kills!” is a popular road safety slogan that we hear often. It’s pretty simplistic and when I look around me on the highway I am convinced that drivers either don’t believe it or live in a world of denial. Speed alone doesn’t kill, but combine it with poor driving skills or a bad decision and it definitely makes a bad situation worse. The most obvious drawback of speed is that the faster you go, the more likely some road user is going to get hurt or killed when things go wrong. Energy increases as the square of the speed and our bodies can only deal with sudden changes in energy to a certain extent. Exceed that threshold and we tend to come apart at the seams. The faster you go, the less time you have to deal with issues. These issues may be caused by you or they may be caused by another road user. Either way, if you are going too fast to react and recover, it’s going to hurt someone. “Go with the flow.” Yes, I agree that is a good idea until the flow exceeds the speed limit. I like to obey the rules of the road and we have some drivers who are unsafe at speeds above the limit. Perhaps the next time the news tells you that a collision was a result of speed, think that it probably means inappropriate speed made a driving error unrecoverable. Council gives proposed indoor horse arena a break on height restriction KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Last winter’s harsh conditions made it impossible for many local horse owners to go riding. Corinne Matheson, operator of Mystic Wo o d s L a n d s c a p e Design, and the owner of three horses, wants to make sure that doesn’t happen again. Matheson and her partner Wayne Bairstow plan to build an indoor equestrian arena on property they own on Gordon Road, north of the city, where she says more and more horse owners are buying property in order to accommodate their animals. The rural setting provides for a nice area to board horses, but when the weather’s

bad, there’s nowhere nearby to ride. “Cur rently there is no enclosed riding facility in Campbell River to ride when the weather is unfavourable,” says Matheson. “This winter many of the Gordon Road residents had to trailer their horses to Courtenay to ride in the indoor arenas there.” The Campbell River Trail Riders maintain a riding ring about two kilometres west of the city, off Highway 28, but Matheson said it was unusable for more than three months last winter because of ice and snow. She said the organization cannot afford to build an arena of their own and would be happy to see an indoor venue so close by. “An indoor riding facility is something

that’s really needed in the community and I’m willing to put up the funds for it,” says Matheson. “We decided to do a survey of all the horse owners in the neighbourhood to see if they would use a facility on Gordon Road and everyone said ‘yes’. Further, we went and spoke to all our neighbours without horses and had them sign a form saying they support us building an arena.” The building is designed to be built at the back of Matheson’s property, where it will not be visible from Gordon Road or by neighbours, as it is completely surrounded by trees on all sides. Plans call for the building to be a fabriccovered, steel-framed structure, 12 metres in height. A city bylaw

restricts such a building to be no more than 10 metres high, but at Tuesday night’s council meeting, councillors voted to allow a variance to the building height, which will allow Matheson to build her building two metres higher. “I don’t understand why the restriction is 10 metres in a rural area like Gordon Road anyway,” said Coun. Roy Grant. “I don’t know what kind of structure in a rural setting you could ever build with a roof that’s less than 10 metres.” Coun. Claire Moglove was pleased to hear about the proposed arena. “It sounds like a really exciting project and it sounds like you have your bases covered,” she said.

Reputation destroyed The Vancouver Canucks lost their third chance to hoist the Stanley Cup on Wednesday night. The City of Vancouver, and the Metro Vancouver region, lost a reputation. The last time the Canucks lost in We say: All the Stanley Cup final, back in 1994, the goodwill there was a riot in downtown Vanbrought on by the couver. One person suffered serious store windows were broOlympics is gone injuries, ken and thousands were caught up in mischief and mayhem. This left a permanent stain on the reputation of Vancouver, as a city of sore losers and one where mayhem could break out, on almost a moment’s notice. It took years to deal with the after-

math. The 1994 riot was one reason that the security budget for the 2010 Winter Olympics was so large — organizers and all three levels of government did not want a repeat. The day after the Olympics began last February, a group of anarchists known as “the Black bloc” broke store windows and frightened visitors. Reprisals were swift and security was noticeably stepped up. From that point on, the Olympics became a wonderful, peaceful event, with thousands of people on the streets day and night, and almost no incidents. When the Canadian men’s hockey team won the gold medal in the final event of the Games, there was celebration, elation and no trouble. Perhaps that fooled Vancouver Police. Perhaps they

felt that all the people who congregate in downtown Vancouver when there is a major event underway are willing to behave themselves. On all the previous evenings, with Canucks’ games televised for huge crowds on the streets, things were peaceful. There were minimal problems. However, game seven wasn’t even over before trouble began. People were overturning vehicles, setting them on fire, leading charges to break windows, looting, stabbing others and taunting police, who showed amazing restraint. All the carefully-built improvements to the reputation of the city and region was destroyed, and millions of dollars in damage was incurred. – Black Press

An apology... The Campbell River Mirror would like to issue an apology to the family of Jacob Lawrence for the way we handled his tragic motorcycle accident in Wednesday’s paper. The loss of a young person in our community is always a tragic event and that should be the focus of any report on that loss. Our story lost sight of that focus and has upset many people in the community in addition, undoubtedly, to the family involved. We have reviewed our approach to this kind of story and would like to reassure our readers that sensitivity to the impact of our reporting on families and the community will always be included in the editorial decision-making process. – Alistair Taylor, Editor

Trend puts a new spin on vegetable gardening

Morgan Ostler Urban Gardener

Checking Out Other People’s gardens is a constant source of inspiration. I visit some amazing backyard vegetable gardens. My friend and mentor, Georgene Price is one of those especially gifted gardeners with a mystic ability to make anything grow. Georgene is over 90-years-old and still has an abiding delight in the wonders of growing food. Last year, she sold her Candy Lane home and moved into a waterfront condo at Willow Point. Leaving her beloved vegetable garden behind was a painful wrench but it didn’t take long to find a niche. She immediately volunteered to work on the window box flower display at the late Sybil Morgan Andrews cottage garden where she had spent so many

happy hours years ago learning to paint under Sybil’s tutelage. It was obvious that tending that small garden wasn’t enough for Georgene’s boundless energy. The next task was to take on the development of her son Gordon’s back yard. He’s working out of town now and she has a generous space planned out and already partly planted. Spin Gardening Is An Off-Shoot of Spin Farming. That is essentially what Georgene is doing. The gardening part of the spin is where a person, who does not have land, offers to cultivate a vegetable garden in someone else’’s back yard in exchange for keeping the owner supplied with fresh grown food. This concept, on a larger scale,

was pioneered in Canada by Sasktoon farmer, Wally Satzewich and his partner Gail Vandersteen. They have become an urban phenomena throughout the country. Satzewich is now renting around 25 backyards in the city totaling about a half-acre of growing space. He and his partner make a good living on their market sales. In Victoria, Spin Gardening is wildly popular and not only are these gardeners providing food for the property owners but are marketing the surplus at either a market garden co-op or a direct-to-the door system. It is exciting to see these new developments on Vancouver Island that reduce our dependency on shipments from the mainland and also provide us with fresh high quality foods.

That Long Rainy Month of May is thankfully over. The few warm days in June have made a difference. I have had a great yearning to begin eating something produced in my own garden and the only plants in the patch that were bursting with enthusiasm were the perennial parsleys, chives, chard and sorrel. The huge Portuguese kale had taken a battering over the winter and despite the lure of consuming those big crunchy leaves I left the plant to recover. Making do with what was available, I chopped up one cup of chives and parsley, two cups of leftover cooked potatoes, two free-run eggs, and mashed them all together with herbed seasonings. Shaping them into large patties they were grilled in a hot cast-iron pan.

Goodenough said when she sits outside surrounded by a wide array of plants, feeding her koi and enjoying the quiet water sounds, all the effort is worth it. “The koi are just angelic, they eat right out of my hand,” she said. “It fills me with joy to sit beside my pond.” Kevin and Dianna Thompson’s Jurassic Park-themed garden is a perennial favourite on the tour. Kevin built a six foot waterfall and used old elk and deer bones to help create the impression of dinosaur bones. The Thompsons’ exotic garden features a huge array of plants, fossils, a total of three waterfalls, two bridges, three pumps and a huge pond where numerous koi and seven turtles

isn’t a garden without a water feature to enjoy. She describes her pond as a “tiny little thing,” but enjoys the way the water attracts birds and creates a serene atmosphere. Davis’s garden is full of personality with collect-

ibles and found objects on display, including several antiques. Water features abound on tour

The soothing sounds of water make any garden an oasis and will feature prominently on the 2011 Campbell River Art Gallery’s Garden and Art Tour. This year’’s tour, sponsored by Royal LePage Campbell River, is slated for Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 and will offer thirteen gardens, including eight gardens new to the tour. Water features are plentiful on this year’s tour, with local gardeners agreeing that there’s nothing like the sight and sounds of a pond, creek or waterfall to create a peaceful atmosphere. “I have a very large pond in my very small yard,” said Donna Goodenough, whose property is new to the Garden Tour this year. “I find the sound of water is so relaxing and cleansing. It’s just soothing to the soul.” Goodenough’;’s garden is a labour of love – a totally renovated piece of property that she rehabilitated on her own. To create her impressive koi fish pond, with fountain, lilies and sculptures, she hired a local excavating company to dig a huge hole and haul away truckloads of dirt and rocks. It took five men to carry in the rubber lining to create

Above, Discovery Passage student Kyle Roemer, 11, completed the Great Walk on June 4 with his grandpa Joe Boutilier to raise money for a new playground for his school. The more than 60 kilometre trek takes participants from Gold River to Tahsis. Right, Roemer rings the bell at the finish line in Tahsis after he completed the trek in just over 12 hours.

Student walks for his school KRISTEN DOUGLAS

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A Grade 5 Discovery Passage student performed an amazing feat, that zapped his energy and tested his resolve, in order to help his school. Kyle Roemer, 11, took part in the Great Walk, a 63.5 kilometre trek from Gold River to Tahsis along a logging road. Through pledges, Roemer raised $1,400 towards new play equipment for the school which had

its playground torn down in February. Roemer, who plays hockey, baseball and basketball, and runs everyday with his school, said he wasn’t nervous to do the walk, but at the same time, said it wasn’t easy. “It felt longer than 12 hours, 14 minutes (his finishing time),” said Roemer, who did the walk on June 4 with his grandpa Joe Boutilier. Their time was good enough to earn Roemer a trophy as the

youngest participant with the fastest time. “It was a g reat accomplishment for him and something he will have in his back pocket forever,” said Boutilier. “Now he can feel that he can do anything he wants if he establishes goals for himself.” What Roemer did do, was help out a small school in need. After the school district announced it was taking down Discovery Passage’s playground because of safety issues, the Par-

ent Advisory Council (PAC) learned it was responsible for replacing it. At the time, the small, four-person PAC had just finished a $10,000, seven-year fundraising effort to purchase a small addition to the playground for the older kids. Now the younger students have nothing to play on. To raise enough money for a new, larger playground that all the students can enjoy will likely

cost somewhere between $15,000$30,000. Michelle Roemer, Roemer’s mom and PAC member, said fundraising efforts are “coming along” and she figures the PAC has raised about $5,000 so far. Boutilier said doing the Great Walk has always been on his bucket list and the school needing a new playground gave him the push he needed to go out and do it. “I thought it would be a good idea to do

our factories are running.

the walk and raise funds,” said Boutilier. “But I definitely was not aware of how gruelling it is. It was hard on the body and if I had driven the road first I probably never would have walked it. But overall it was good, and we had a great time together.” To put the route into perspective, Boutilier uses General Hill as an example. “General Hill is short compared to what we were doing and it has a 10 per cent grade, whereas

we were doing hills with an 18 per cent grade,” he said. “It’s hard on the knees.” Boutilier was also surprised to see banks of snow, three to four feet deep along the side of the road in some areas. “This is June, so you can imagine the temperature change.” By the end, both grandpa and grandson were hurting but when Roemer rang the bell in Tahsis to signal the end, they both realized it was worth it.

tant family activity for many families in British Columbia and our government is proud to participate in this weekend to promote recreational fishing,” said Parliamentary Secretary Randy Kamp, MP for Pitt MeadowsMaple Ridge-Mission. “Activities like recreational fishing are great opportunities for families to spend quality time together.” “Fishing is a great way for families to learn about the beauty of our province and experience this great spor t,” said Owen Bird, Executive Director of the Family Fishing Society of B.C. “Introducing the next generation to fishing is a key objective of the weekend. We are committed to educating the public of the vital significance of fish and their fragile habitat.” During Family Fishing Weekend, Canadian residents can go fish-

ing without purchasing a licence in most of British Columbia’s lakes and streams; residents can now also try their hand at tidal water (saltwater) fishing. The Government of Canada is now offering British Columbians an opportunity to sport fish without a licence (except to fish for and retain a salmon). Those wishing to catch-and-release salmon do not require either a licence or a conservation stamp on Family Fishing Weekend. Anglers wishing to retain a salmon require both a tidal water fishing licence and a salmon conservation stamp. These can be purchased online at: http://www-ops2. pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/nrlssndpp/index-eng.cfm All tidal area fishing closures and recreation fishing limits and restrictions continue to apply, so anglers

Ritchie, Doris M. (nee Fielder, formerly Sewell) Sept. 10, 1922 - June 10, 2011

It is with sadness we announce the passing of our Mom and Nana on Friday, June 10th at home in Campbell River. She was pain free and at peace, listening to the birds singing outside her window. Born in Lloydminster Saskatchewan, Doris lived in many small communities as her father worked in various Northwest Mounted Police, later RCMP, detachments. Doris graduated at the top of her class in North Battleford. After a false start in banking, Doris went to secretarial school in Saskatoon and discovered her Àair for shorthand. Following her parents and brother to Victoria in 1945, Doris worked for various federal and provincial agencies, settling at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. She married Ernest Howard Lyle Sewell, of Victoria, in June 1952; and helped build their house in Langford. The Sewells relocated to Vancouver in 1958 and to Campbell River in 1959. Doris was then the only quali¿ed Court Reporter north of Nanaimo. Widowed at 41, with 3 small children to support, Doris became Director of the School District No. 72 Night School Program in 1966 and an early advocate of life-long learning. She married her soul mate Lorne Ernest Ritchie, in August 1967. Doris and Lorne played tennis, skied at Forbidden Plateau, hiked extensively in Strathcona Park, and shared a passion for art. They began sea kayaking in their 70’s, and tried to ¿nish the Colonist’s cryptic crossword by 11am. Always optimistic, Doris could convince anyone the sun was going to shine any minute. She always said “yes” to opportunities to travel or attend a painting workshop; all these experiences brought adventure and richness to her life. Doris was a lifelong volunteer, a force behind classical music performances and summer art workshops in Campbell River from 1967 to 1992. She worked tirelessly to establish and operate the Campbell River Art Gallery. She taught the beauty of watercolours through her classes at the Gallery and Elderhostel. Doris will be missed and remembered by her daughters Gwendolyn Sewell (Michael Long) of Kitimat BC, and Jean Cruickshank (Dave) of Port Alberni BC; her son Roger Sewell of Campbell River BC; her grandchildren Flora and Heather Cruickshank and Jesse Sewell; her mah jong partners; her watercolour students; and her many friends in Campbell River and the arts community, and the congregation of St Peter’s Anglican. A celebration of life will be held at St Peter’s Anglican Church in Campbell River this Friday, June 17th at 1:00pm. In lieu of Àowers please donate to the Campbell River Art Gallery; the SPCA or your charity of choice, and please cheer for Roger Federer during Wimbledon 2011.

Campbell River surges ahead at Island Championships The Campbell River Killer Whales travelled to Victoria for the Vancouver Island Regional Championships determined to improved on their performance from last year. The club was very competitive with the field as they brought 21 swimmers this year, up from 14 the previous year. When the swim meet had concluded, the Club placed 5th by 9 points up from being 8th in 2010. “This was a great meet for our club swimmers,” said Head Coach Chris Koopmans. “We really challenged our competitors right to the end, with many breakthrough swims for our young age groupers.” Conner Skuse lead the 11&12 boys with three gold medals, three silver and two bronze medal performances. “Conner has been working diligently on improving his breaststroke for the IM’s so it was great see him win the gold in both the 400 and 200 meter Individual medley,” said Chris Koopmans David Palmer who has been recov-

ering from an injury for the past two months, raced himself to three Gold Medals, and two Silver and two Bronze medals. “It was great to get David back into competition even though he is still not at his best, he certainly gave what he could for our team. He has been able to handle this setback will come back even stronger because of the injury.” Remarked Coach Chris Koopmans In the 10 & Under girl Division, Sydney Boyle and Cianna Dunn not only were medal finalists but quailified for the BC’s SWIM STAR Competition that will be held in Kelowna in two weeks. Boyle raced her way to a silver medal in the 400 free (taking off over 17 seconds) to qualify. Cianna Dunn was determined to qualify for this meet and pushed herself to win gold in the 200 IM with a time of 3:15.75, a personal best. M e l aya n a B e a u d i n , Ave r y Moskal, Jasmine Skuse and Kasey Lathangue rounded out the 10 and under squad and all posted exciting Continued on A31

Continued from A10 performances. The Killer Whales’ 11 & 12 Girls squad also posted some very impressive performances. Catalina Manders was able to qualify for the BC “AA Provincial Championships that she has been working towards. Kennedy Windle and Cassidy Scott were able to achieve times that will allow them to Swim at the BC “AAA’s Championship later in July. However it was the racing that really impressed not only the coach but the competition. “Our girls relay surprised quite a few teams with their determination and racing skills, Koopmans said. “Mackenzie Padington, Jenna Beaudin, Cassidy Scott and Kennedy Windle really do feed of each other and together can do almost anything. Austin Johnson who aged up into the 15 & over category challenged himself in events he normally does not compete in. he placed fifth in the 400 IM and sixth in the 100 back. Gage Windle who was the Killer whales youngest competitor at age 7, came in the top eight in every event in the 10 & under boys category.

to fall out of contention for the win. Purdy would go on to take the win, with second going to Bryant, and third to Noble. A wreck last weekend caused a smaller field of Dwarf cars on Saturday. Fast time in qualifying went to Jim Pridge, setting a time of 15.798. The B dash was won by Tyler Peters, and the A went to Carl Carlson Jr., who was filling in for Bruce Garside on the night. The first of two heats saw Bob Pridge lead until lap 6, when his younger brother Jim Pridge took the lead and the eventual win. The reverse heat saw Tyler Peters start on the pole and stretch his lead from there, taking the win. The 20-lap feature saw Jim Pridge work his way from the back to the front in only five laps. Pridge would stretch his lead from there. Second went to Tyler Peters, and third to Bob Pridge.

Charlie Ackerman dominated the Bomber car class to pick up the 30 lap feature race on Saturday. The I.M.C.A Modifieds and the Dwarf cars filled out the rest of the racing card. Brad Purdy had a great day in the I.M.C.A Modified division, picking up three wins out of four races. Although Purdy had such a dominating night, Kevin Noble set a new track record in qualifying, with a time of 15.612. The old track record was held by Chris Beaulieu, with a time of 15.642. Purdy picked up the win in the Dash, and dominated the first of two heats, leading all eight laps. The reverse heat saw Noble take the lead from Dano Bryant on the first lap and never look back. The 15-lap feature saw Purdy and Noble battle for the lead for 10 laps. On lap 10, Noble clipped the back end of Purdy, which gave Noble a flat time and causing him
