Plan extends life of landfill KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A transfer station will replace the city dump for one year starting this fall when the landfill is expected to be full, the region’s Solid Waste Management Board decided Monday. While trash will still be taken to the dump, instead of the waste remaining in the landfill, it will be transferred to the Pigeon Lake Landfill in the Comox Valley. Although the Campbell River landfill will eventually be permanently shut down, a construction project at the landfill, slated for late fall or early winter, will extend the landfill’s lifespan another five years. “The last piece of the puzzle is the transfer of waste while preparing the landfill to receive more waste,” said Tom Boatman, manager of solid waste with the Comox Strathcona Solid Waste Management. “We’ll be taking all the waste to Cumberland for about one year, starting later this year.” The district plans to construct a

the landfill, adding years onto it. The construction project will not only extend the life of the dump, but also address a 38-yearold deficiency at the landfill. Built without a system to collect and treat leachate, a potentially toxic liquid, the landfill is

not in compliance with BC Landfill Criteria and samples from 14 area wells indicate the landfill is in violation of clean drinking water standards, according to the Strathcona Regional District. “Right now, trash is basically just put into an old hole in the

ground, with no liner to contain liquid that comes into contact with trash,” said Boatman. He said test results show that although the landfill has affected some residents’ water, it is not Continued on A3

Thomas Cook

Same location! Same dedicated staff! Same commitment to customer service! Same wonderful world of travel ideas! Thomas Cook operates in 21 international markets, moves over 23 million people per year, has revenues of approximately $16 billion and an employee base of 31,000 people. Only our name has changed – everything you have come to know about us stays the same (well, maybe we’re standing a little taller these days!).

The Great StridesTaking Steps to cure Cystic Fibrosis annual walk on Sunday was a success this year. The Campbell River Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada is pleased to announce that we welcomed over 150 participants, and with the support of Campbell River, raised more than $13,000 for the fight against cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis, which affects the lungs and digestive system, is the most common, fatal, inherited disease affecting young Canadians. All funds raised go toward research for a cure for cystic fibrosis(CF) and to fund necessary CF

clinics across Canada. The Campbell River chapter would like to extend their sincere thanks to all who came out in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada and people who cope with this devastating disease each and every day. “Great thanks to our sponsors – Campbell River Kinsmen Club, Zellers, Marine Harvest Canada, Quinsam Coal Corp, Capacity Forest Management, Citizens On Patrol, St. John Ambulance, Campbell River Fire Department, All in One Party Shop, Thrifty Foods, Bounce-a-rama, Dairy Queen, Imagination Unlimited, Sparkles the Clown, Toad in

a Tree, and 97.3 The Eagle – for helping to make our event a success once again,” said event organizer River Stoppard. “Thanks also to all those who walked or sponsored walkers – everyone who helped or participated can feel proud of what we accomplished together to help beat this disease.” Stoppard was honoured with a Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s “Breath of Life” award which is given in recognition of exceptional dedication and outstanding generosity in the fight against cystic fibrosis. Chapter president Jo-Ann Wallis said, “River has worked

incredibly hard to make a difference in the CF cause. It is especially important to her as her sevenyear-old daughter Sylvanna has CF. Not only does River put a great deal of effort into keeping Sylvanna healthy but she works tirelessly for the CF cause and is a very deserving recipient of the award.” Funds raised from the event are critical research and clinical care dollars which help to make a difference in the quality of life of Canadians with CF. Canadians with CF can look to the future with hope that a cure is in sight thanks to events like the Great Strides Walk.

Driver flees, leaves ID

POLICE BEAT

When the police lights came on behind him, the driver of a smokey pickup fled his truck, but left his identification and a passenger behind. The incident occurred on May 24, around 2 a.m., when an RCMP officer spotted the pickup with a faulty exhaust system. When the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver fled, but the passenger was still in the cab, along with the driver’s jacket and identification. The driver was unlicenced and police didn’t say if he was immediately caught. However, his truck was impounded.

Police, along with Conservation Officers, were called out to the campsite on May 22 at 4 p.m. When they arrived, they found three males who had been drinking and firing weapons. According to RCMP, families who were camped in the area thanked police for their response

Impaired driving, again A man was stopped for impaired driving, two times in two days. On May 27, he was stopped in Nanaimo and given an immediate roadside suspension for drinking and driving. The following day, at 11:45 a.m., police in Campbell River received a report of a weaving car with a possible impaired driver. It turned out to be the same man who refused to provide a breath sample. He was arrested and is facing charges.

Judge’s mistake means less jail time for robber David Love ‘waltzed’ out of custody in socks PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

A judge’s error has resulted in a reduced jail sentence for a heroin-addicted man who robbed thousands of dollars in jewellry and stole from his own mother.

“That’s your good luck,” Judge Thomas Dohm told David Love on Monday in Campbell River provincial court. Love appeared by video from jail cells in Victoria where he’s spent the last three months. After plead-

ing not guilty earlier this year to a spree of crimes, Love changed his plea to guilty on five charges – robbery, obstruction, using a forged document and two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000 – in exchange for a jail sentence of two years less a day. The sentence was part of a joint submission worked out by Crown prosecutor David Fitzsimmons

THEY SAID IT: “That’s your good luck.”

and defence lawyer Jordan Watt. However, Judge Dohm apparently misinterpreted the sentence and gave Love credit for time

served and sentenced him to 21 months jail. Fitzsimmons pointed out the error, but Judge Dohm declined to change his mind, saying that he had already told Love his sentence was 21 months. It’s not the first time Love has been in jail. In 2008, he went on another drugfuelled crime spree that included forging cheques from his mother’s company, theft and possession of stolen

property. Love and his girlfriend Justine Hedden were also charged in connection with the August 2008 robbery of a 44-year-old man on Dogwood Street. Following his release from jail, Love was apparently of f the drugs and doing well. But then the 32-yearold lost his job, ran up debts and became depressed, said Watt. So Love started taking heroin again which TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS

resulted in a “snowball effect” and a spree of crimes which began last December. Two days before Christmas, Love forged his mother’s name on a $500 cheque and cashed it. On Jan. 19, Love pawned a prawn puller and chainsaw which was stolen, along with several other tools, from his mother’s home. The crimes ramped up on Feb. 20, when Love entered London Drugs, went into the shipping/receiving area and then walked out the back door after stealing two flatscreen televisions. Then, on Feb. 24, Love walked into Thong’s Jewellery and Repair, reached across the counter and stolen 17 gold chains, estimated in value at between $18,000-$22,000. One of the owners chased after Love and wrestled with him in the parking lot. Love lost a boot in the tussle, but escaped into an awaiting taxi. By the time police caught up with the cab, Love had already fled. But the following day, they obtained a search warrant for his residence and found him hiding in the attic. While in custody at the RCMP detachment, Love was being questioned in an interrogation room when the constable in charge of the investigation decided to take a break. But for some reason the door was left unlocked and Love “waltzed” out of the detachment wearing nothing but socks. He was later arrested and has been in custody since then. In spite of his wrongdoings, his lawyer said that Love still has the support of his family and is remorseful. Watt said that Love intends to continue taking counselling for drug addiction and may enter a rehabilitation program once he’s released. Watt also pointed out that Love has several marine “tickets” and wants to return to work for his mother’s tugboat company. Just one of the stolen gold chains was recovered, at a local pawn shop, but the rest, along with the televisions were never found.

Managing 4x10 Your Money INVESTORSretirement MANAGE YOUR MONEY Your readiness check-up You’ve thought about it for years – the day you move into retirement. But now that ‘the day’ is just around the corner, you may be having other thoughts. Have you done everything you can to prepare for that day? Are there important things left undone? Let’s relieve the stress right now with a review of retirement basics. Your retirement income will derive from public sources like the Canada/Québec Pension Plan (CPP/QPP) or Old Age Security (OAS), from company pension plans and from your personal registered and nonretirement savings. You will need to apply for CPP/QPP and OAS. You can choose to start receiving CPP/QPP bene¿ts any time between 60 and 70 but the bene¿ts are reduced if you receive them before 65 and increased if you do so between 65 and 70. It is fully taxable but you may be able to transfer portions of it to your RRSP and claim a deduction for the amount you contribute. Your employer-sponsored pension plan may allow you to transfer your accumulated bene¿ts into a locked-in, personally-directed plan. You then assume the investment risk but you also reduce the risk of forfeiting some of your pension assets in the event that you and your spouse die

Nominating a deserving business, not for profit organization or individual business leader is easy. Simply complete the nomination form with basic contact information, select the category that best applies to your nomination, then return your completed form to the Chamber by 4:30 p.m. June 1. For additional infor mation call the Chamber at 250-287-4636. Nominees will be contacted and asked for additional information to demonstrate their eligibility for the award. An independent panel of judges representing a broad range of Campbell River businesses and organizations will review and score each qualified nomination package received.

Campbell River’s outstanding businesses and entre preneurs will be honoured and the winners will be announced at the Business Awards of Distinction Gala on Sept. 24. Be sure to save the date as the event is always sold out and this year’s promises to be better than ever with a new format and a new venue at the Tidemark Theatre. The 2011 Business Awards of Distinction are presented by the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce in partnership with our sponsors and volunteers. The event’s theme is ‘Success Beyond the Lemonade Stand’ promoting the value of early business literacy, entrepreneurship, determination and innovation – the

winning formula for business success at any age. Many of today’s most successful business leaders started their own first business with a lemonade stand. The success of those early lemonade stands and business ideas were the foundation for future success. Today there’s a resurgence of interest in the lemonade stand as a model for young entrepreneurs and the next generation of business leaders. June sees the launch of the PURPLE Tears campaign Over the next few weeks, Campbell River family centres, gathering places and agencies will spread the news about the period of purple crying. Purple crying is a normal yet difficult developmental stage when infants between two weeks and four months can cry inconsolably for up to five hours a day. Following up on the successful

knitted caps campaign, which distributed hats to new parents in birthing hospitals across B.C., the PURPLE Tears initiative aims to increase awareness of this difficult stage among parents of newborns, caregivers and the general public. “Crying is a known trigger for shaking and child abuse,” said Claire Yambao, provincial program co-ordina-

tor of Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome BC. “People need to know it’s normal, and that if they get frustrated, it’s okay to put the baby in a safe place and walk away.” In June, posters, large decals and wall and floor displays will appear in local child and family centres in order to inform and educate the public on the period of PURPLE

Crying. The highly visible tear displays ask questions such as: “Can all this crying be normal?” and “Did you know your baby would cry like this?” or “Will this crying ever end?” The Period of PURPLE Crying program explains normal infant crying, and how to cope with it. It is the largest evidence-based initiative to create a cultural change in how society

Local police honoured as members of Alexa’s Team Fifty-one police officers from the communities across Vancouver Island were honoured by the BCAA Road Safety Foundation on May 25 as members of Alexa’’s Team 2010 in recognition for their diligence in removing impaired drivers from the roads of our community. Membership on Alexa’s Team recognizes police officers, both RCMP and municipal police, that have forwarded to Crown a minimum of 10 full impaired driving charges and/or issued 90-Day Driving Prohibitions under the new Immediate Roadside Prohibition sanctions. In addition, these members have issued thousands of 24-Hour, three-day and seven-day Driving Prohibitions in 2010. Since Alexa’s Team was for med three years ago, the member officers have removed 18,810 drivers from the roads of B.C. whose ability to operate a motor vehicle safely was affected by alcohol or drugs. Alexa’s Team was for med in remembrance of Alexa Renée Middelaer who lost her life in May 2008 at age four and a half after being run down by a vehicle driven by an impaired driver. A l e x a ’s a u n t w a s standing with her at the side of the horse paddock at the time of the crash and continues to recover from life

Laurel Middelaer (right) with members of the 2010 Vancouver Island Alexa’s Team from Campbell River RCMP and North Island Traffic Services. threatening injuries. A 56-year old woman from Delta has since been convicted of two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm and death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm and death. Approximately 150 people are killed each year in B.C. at the hands of impaired drivers. Many more suffer the loss of their loved ones for the rest of their lives.” said Inspector Ted Emanuels, Operations Officer for the RCMP Lower Mainland District Traffic Services, “The members of Alexa’s Team are dedicated traffic, general duty and patrol officers from throughout B.C. who have made the

reduction of impaired driving fatalities and injuries a personal challenge. They continue to demonstrate a commitment to removing both alcohol and drug impaired drivers from our roadways to make B.C. a safer place for all of us.” “Knowing that impaired driving is the number one cause of criminal death in B.C., knowing that on average two British Columbians die each week due to impaired driving, and knowing that this is how our four year old daughter was killed is almost unbelievable, and I am sure that everyone reading this would concur,” said Laurel Middelaer, the mother of four-year old Alexa. “There are hundreds

of families in B.C. that share our experience. As a family we choose to look for solutions. We are working with others to make this province and this country safer.” The Middelaer family, along with the BCAA Road Safety Foundation and Surrey City Mayor Dianne Watts recently kicked of the Alexa’s Bus campaign with an initial goal of raising $250,000 to bring a mobile impaired driving testing unit to B.C. Like Alexa’s Team, Alexa’s Bus is another means to deter impaired drivers through education or enforcement,” said Allan Lamb, executive director of the BCAA Road Safety Foundation.

Lamb noted that significantly more people die in traffic crashes than as a result of all homicides and murders, and that the majority of impaired drivers who are over the .08 legal limit come from licenced premises. Lamb also cited T ranspor t Canada statistics that show impaired drivers cost the B.C. economy $1.6 billion per year, primarily health, police and court costs. Since 2008 the BCAA Road Safety Foundation has honoured 419 officers from around the province. In the past three years the members of Alexa’s Team have removed over 18,000 alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers from British Columbia’s roadways. Our 2X14 Water Don’t set and forget Summer use, foot-traffic and winter freeze-thaw action can affect the performance of your irrigation system. Even if installed by a professional to be water efficient at the time of installation, failure to check the system periodically will result in Luisa Richardson wasting water over time. Automatic sprinkler systems should be serviced in spring and checked once monthly throughout the summer. Some things to look for and repair during a spring tune-up: • Reset timers, ensure they work • Adjust for odd and even months • Add a rain sensor • Check for blocked or misaligned sprinkler heads • Check for leaks • Test backflow prevention valves and check valves The system should also be checked once a month until the end of summer. If it is set to go off in the dark, you will not notice any new problems. It is possible that a particle may get caught in one of the nozzles, plugging the orifice. So once a month, turn on the system and check for: • Patterns of dry and wet areas, which indicate a plugged nozzle • Check the arc and adjust if driveways and streets are being watered • Don’t forget to turn the system off in the fall! If you notice patterns of irrigation on the road or pavement when you wake up, you should test your system. One or more of your sprinkler heads are no longer correctly aimed or may be blocked. Average water use triples in summer time and most of this increase is due to inefficient lawn watering. Increased use at peak periods compromises City of CR fire-fighting ability and increases operating and capital costs. For more information on water-wise lawn and garden care, visit the CCR website or call or e-mail the water hotline: 250-203-2316, water.wise@ campbellriver.ca.

Our View

HST decision left to voters Premier Christy Clark has promised to reduce the HST by two percentage points – over the next three years – as well as offer rebates to seniors and families with children under 18. Taxes would also increase two per We say: Ask cent for corporations, while a planned tax cut for small businesses would be yourself are we shelved to compensate for the revenue better off with the lost. The rebates alone would cost the HST or without? province more than $200 million. Those cheques, for $175 each, would be mailed out at the end of the year, not in advance of the upcoming referendum on the HST. The rebate only comes if the

HST survives. Getting rid of it could cost B.C. half a billion dollars the first year alone. The province would also have to repay the $1.6 billion federal transition fund. Cutting the HST just one percentage point will reduce revenues by $850 million a year, which is why the rate reduction would occur in phases, to lessen the effect on the B.C. budget. The HST was supposed to be revenue neutral and create more jobs. A recent study has shown it has done neither – it actually costs families $350 more a year. The proposed “fixes” to the HST are supposed to even things out, lessen the burden on average taxpayers. But if the Liberals were sincere, and not so concerned

about getting re-elected, they would make the changes now. Rather, they are being criticized for trying to buy votes – offering people their own money back to save the party’s own skin after rolling out the HST shortly after the last provincial election and without public consultation. Such folly might be too much to overcome, but voters must first ask themselves, is the province better off with the HST, with the proposed changes and even without? Decide for yourself: http://hstinbc.ca/buying_goods/ what_has_more_tax. – Black Press

Good point: Highway Hats off to Dan Samson for having the vision to see our city’s true potential. I fully support his idea of naming the Old Island Highway Marine Drive. Marine Drive is a prestige address in Vancouver, West Vancouver and North Vancouver. It will be a prestige address here, too. Property values will go up. Businesses will have pride of place. Stationery costs: If you don’t know how to change the stationery templates in MS Word, ask someone under the age of 40 to show you how. Customer confusion: Buy an ad in the newspaper: “New address, same location!” Wait for a new phonebook to be published within twelve months. Edit your listing on Google Maps. Make a contribution to any of a number of charities that send out free address labels. Tradition: Right now it might as well be called “the road formerly known as 19.” “Old Island Highway” implies that there is a newer, better highway somewhere else. Old Island Highway has been left behind. Businesses and residences on “Old Island Highway” have also been left behind. Who cares about hem? Let the weeds grow. No need to paint the fence or trim the hedge. Is the name historical like Cabot Trail? No. Is it of local origin like Skookum Wehut? No. Old Island Highway is no more than an old island highway. So, let’s all get behind Marine Drive for Rt. 19A. Then after that we should change the name(s) of 9th Avenue/ Homewood Road/14th Avenue to Samson Road in Dan’s honour. On this near perfect day, all I hear is the coughing

Paul Rudan No, really

It’s startling when your perspective is changed in a split second. There we were, a couple hundred people gathered outside Penfield School on Sunday morning for the annual Great Strides walk to support cystic fibrosis research. I took photos and watched as people talked, laughed and hugged as they awaited the 11 a.m. start. And it was a glorious morning too. The sunshine and warmth felt great; a nice change from the cool and wet weather we’ve had since…last September? “I won’t be needing this today,” said retired firefighter Les Ready as pulled off his sweater. Yes, it felt good and then I spotted someone I haven’t seen for quite some time. There was Kim Wood (nee

Black), accompanied by her husband James. It was marvelous seeing them together on this wonderful day. It was just a few years ago they were married here in Campbell River. And then, a month after they exchanged rings, James was seriously injured in a vehicle rollover near Winnipeg after the driver fell asleep at the wheel. One person was killed and James was left in a coma. Thankfully, he survived. And here they were now, smiling, happy and looking marvelous – you would never have guessed that he survived a near-fatal accident and that she lives with a life-threatening disease which is cystic fibrosis. I first took photos of Kim when she was just a kid. She was our local “poster girl” for cystic fibrosis aware-

ness and fundraising campaigns. That “torch” has now been passed to young Sylvanna Denroche, who also lives with cystic fibrosis. Sylvanna was also there along with Amethyst Hamersly who simply says, “CF sucks.” Anyhow, I started taking pictures of Kim as the warm-up began. I thought it would be nice for the people of Campbell River to see her again, all grown up and looking great. She stretched right, left, touched her toes...and then she stopped. As everyone else continued stretching, Kim started coughing. It was just a brief spell and she immediately got back into the warm-up, but that one little incident hit me like a brick. This is the cough that won’t go away.

This is the cough that only hints at the other lung symptoms that could one day threaten her life. Then I remembered Amethyst coughing too as her mother Anna spoke about this terrible affliction. Shortly later, little Sylvanna ran with her friends, ahead of the other walkers, before stopping to cough. It’s the cough that kills and it doesn’t seem fair at all. Sylvanna deserves to run and play with her friends; Amethyst deserves to grow into a young woman; and Kim deserves to be loved and spoiled by her husband. I hope this all happens for all three of them and I can only hope a cure is found for cystic fibrosis. To learn more, check out Kim’s blog: livelovebreathebykim.blogspot.com

Hydro pole signs hazardous for crews I would like to draw your readers’ attention to the increased amount of signage posted on utility poles. Signs, posters, banners or other objects on utility poles create a safety hazard for BC Hydro line crews who need clear access to poles. A worker can be

injured attempting to climb a pole with these obstructions or by the nails that are used to attach the sign. It is for those reasons that the posting of anything on the poles under any circumstances is not permitted. This a safety hazard not only to BC Hydro

line crews, but those of TELUS and Shaw as well. Signs on utility poles violate WorkSafe BC’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. We realize most people are not aware of the potential hazard this creates for our crews or of the regulation

by WorkSafe; so we are asking individuals and businesses to refrain from using poles as public notice boards. If you have posted something on a utility pole, please take the time to remove it. BC Hydro will be actively ensuring that material is removed from utility poles

Jim was one of those quiet people who had a big impact Thank you for mentioning the passing of Jim Dubois (“Rest in peace gents” by Paul Rudan, May 27) – one of those quiet, unassuming people who through their actions have an immeasurable impact on those who know him. I am so grateful to have known him these past three years - as a premiere, nature photographer “with the patience of a corpse” who generously shared his spectacular, candid nature photographs a n d v i d e o s, o f t e n accompanied by amusing anecdotes, through a large e-mail list.

His photos were free to anyone using them for educational purposes, and so, he gave me lots of material for my school workshops. When I asked him to be the “speaker” at my bird presentation at the museum last November, he replied “Thanks for the offer, but it’s not at all my thing. My public speaking has pretty well consisted of standing, saying ‘Not Guilty’ and sitting down trying to look innocent.” He sat there, in the front row, grinning when I shared that story with the participants.

Items we use everyday, like gasoline, are taxed at the same rate under HST. However, services like landscaping are taxed more.

And finally, after the Sustainability Workshop at the Tidemark on April 20, Jim promised to build me a Mason bee home. He called a week later, to say that he was being

airlifted to Vancouver Hospital. He wanted me to know that he would not be able to deliver on his promise, and that he felt it was important to call as he liked to keep his com-

Leave history well enough alone I personally do not want the highway renamed as I would have to have many sessions standing in line at the BC Government Agents office to pay at least $80 if not more to change my Driver’s License alone not to mention the itemized costs on all others forms of ID that are must haves in our society. Plus have to make sure that all other agencies have a change of address which would also cost a fee. Then I also worry about any

pensioners and what happens to their pension cheques or their income tax which you know would be a problem for everyone etc when they may be too confused with such an overburden government system to help them with something as small as an address change. Press one for this, press two for that. I think it is absolutely unneeded and unwanted. History is what it is and leave it alone! Denise Hayward

Coast Realty approached Radiant Life Church with the idea of the garden about three months ago and warm weather last week finally allowed construction of the garden to get underway. Although there are community gardens on Dogwood Street and in Willow Point, this type of garden is a first among Campbell River businesses.

Lieselotte (Lilo) Jochimski October 14, 1923–May 25, 2011 Sadly, Lilo passed away following a short illness at Campbell River and Regional District Hospital at the age of 87. Lilo was pre-deceased by her husband Ed in 2008 and will be greatly missed by her siblings Else and Hans in Germany, her children Gerd (Barb), Walter (Karen), Willy (Andrea), Claudia (Robert), Renate (Werner), Chris (Christine), ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Lilo also leaves many friends including members of the Bethany Lutheran Church congregation and Ironwood Place residents and staff where she lived for the past 4 years. Lilo was born in Barenstein, Germany and settled in the Black Forest region after marrying Ed. Although they had a nice house and a good life, in the mid 1950s Ed was keen to immigrate to Canada to experience greater freedoms and the dream of better opportunities for his family. Ed journeyed to Canada to ďŹ nd work and a place to live. Lilo bravely followed with their 3 sons and they began their new life in Yellowknife, NWT. From Yellowknife the family moved to Ontario and over the years the family grew to include two daughters and one more son. In 1970 the family moved to Campbell River where they would settle for good. Lilo worked hard to raise their six children teaching herself English along the way and adapting to the Canadian lifestyle including the at times harsh climate. An accomplished cook, baker and gardener Lilo had a great appreciation for nature and could often be found walking the trails in parks around Campbell River rain or shine. The main focus of Lilo’s life was her family and she was at her happiest when the house was full with her kids and their families enjoying a good meal and a laugh. We will miss you Mom. A private family memorial will be held. Donations in lieu of owers can be made to the Campbell River Hospital Foundation.
