During the celebration, Roots of Empathy facilitator Carlene Steeves acknowledged School District 71 for funding the program and thanked the teachers, facilitators, instructors and families who support the program. “Most important, we have to thank our junior teachers, and that is our babies,” she said. “It’s through watching these babies

Jessica Coltart is really excited about becoming a babysitter. And having a baby visit her classroom at Courtenay Elementary School as part of the Roots of Empathy program throughout the year helped fuel that excitement. Roots of Empathy is a worldwide evidencebased classroom program for students in kindergarten to Grade 8 in which a local family comes into the classroom, and students learn about different stages of babies’ development and learn about their own feelings and the feelings of others. School District 71 celebrated another year of Roots of

Empathy last week at the school board office. Coltart spoke about how much she loved having baby Hailey in her classroom during the year-end celebration. “It was awesome because I got to learn more about her and more about babies and how their brains work inside, and it’s going to be better in my babysitting course next year,” she said. “It made me want to be a babysitter more. I forgot really how babies acted until I saw baby Hailey.” She has a hard time picking a favourite moment since “they were all pretty even,” but says it was probably when they received Hawaiian necklaces because she received hers from baby Hailey.

instructor, but the biggest changes he noticed in baby Reid were when he was teething, when his hair was growing and when he went from rolling to crawling. Hoffman’s favourite moment was when Reid climbed on him and one of his friends. Benjamin Graham only went to a couple of classes with his one-year-old baby Benjamin, but his wife Esther went to all of them. “When I was there, (Benjamin) really enjoyed playing with the kids,” he said. “They were all so happy to see him and all excited, and they made him excited. I think he got a lot out of it.” Graham feels

participating in Roots of Empathy was beneficial because they were able to see Benjamin play with other kids and have fun. His favourite moment was the party at the end, and he liked saying goodbye to the students after each visit. “Every time, they would sing the Goodbye Song to Benjamin at the end,” he said. “They’d always shake his hand, and sometimes he grabbed their fingers, and he always had a smile on his face. He really enjoyed the attention he got. I think it made him a little more social. The reception Benjamin got every time, he was the centre of attention. It made

me feel special.” Alicia Zendejas liked participating in the program because she saw how excited her one-year-old daughter, Genevieve, was to see all the children and to see all the attention she received. “She used to get very excited to have a look at the kids and the attention she got from the kids, they were all over her and saying hello and making her smile,” said Zendejas. “I think it did help her in not being afraid of strangers.” They were in the Grade 2/3 French Immersion class at Puntledge Park. were encouraging Genevieve to crawl. “I think probably when she was just about to start crawling and all the kids were calling her and trying to get her to come,” she said. Instructor Kathryn MacKinnon noticed the students were very engaged when Genevieve was in the classroom. “If she could come each week, that would be ideal for the kids,” she said. “I noticed the kids learn a lot about the stages of development, and some of them make connections with kids they know in their life or family and being a little more empathetic or understanding of different stages of development.”

Mother deer, elk and other species may leave their young alone for long periods and, to avoid attracting predators, may only return a few times a day to nurse. When she does return, she can be expected to defend her baby from real or perceived threats — including nearby humans and their pets.

Remember: It’s typical for young ungulates to lie quietly in vegetation for hours at a time, especially in the first two weeks of their lives when they’re not strong enough to follow their mothers. If you see a baby deer, elk or moose, stay away. Wilson said she knows it’s not the greatest thing to have the young deer in her home, but she’s stuck for the moment. “I’m fostering her now and feeding her six times a day.” Wilson said she plans to release Bella in Old Quatsino in the fall. “There are other deer there used to humans and some eat apples right out of your hand,” she said.

Bella the fawn interacts with Sophie the cat on Nancy Wilson’s yard in Port Hardy. The fawn was found June 9 on a logging road and rescued by the son of a friend moments before a grader would have run it over. Photo by Mike D’Amour Fast Facts: If you find a fawn that you think may be orphaned, these are things that you should do: • If the fawn is lying quietly and appears uninjured, leave it alone. It is normal for a mother deer to leave her baby alone for periods of

time. Remember that the mother deer will be wary of you and is likely watching you, so your presence in the area could discourage her from returning. Leave the area. • Keep pets away from the area. • If you think the fawn is not being

cared for by its mother, return the next day to check on it. If it is in the exact same spot and bleating, it may be orphaned. • If you do believe the fawn is orphaned, or if it is injured, contact the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-9527277 or a wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible, but do not touch or move the fawn. If you know the fawn is inured or orphaned (i.e., there is evidence the parent is dead) it will need prompt attention and you should make contact immediately. • It is important to handle deer orphans carefully and minimize human contact in order to give them the best chance of surviving and returning to the wild.

Grannie’s silver tea set is cash in hand In the days before the horseless-carriage, rich people displayed their wealth by lavishly entertaining at dining tables strewn with knifes, forks, wine goblets and plates made from solid silver. Why silver? Well, in times when cash had actual real value, the coins of the realm were made from either solid gold or solid silver. The rich of times gone by thought nothing of demonstrating their wealth by having their

silver coins melted down and made into useful and decorative items for the home. The idea of ‘disposable income’ had no place in their lives – in fact the whole objective was to find a way to “have your cake and eat it too!” By recycling their (disposable) cash and coins into utilitarian objects they were able to retain their wealth while simultaneously having beautiful (and valuable) things surrounding them.

Silver scrap value triples From Page 10 around 10 ounces then in just over a year its scrap value has increased from $100 to as much as $300 essentially the cash value has tripled! It is worth mentioning at this point that the price you see on T.V. for ‘spot’ silver is per ounce for pure silver from a refinery (in the form of one kilo ingots [35.2 ounce bars]). The price we get for our silver (which, if it is Sterling, is for .925 parts pure per 1,000) will be considerably less as it has still to be transported, melted down and refined. Time perhaps to make a decision? To sell or keep? As with all things, commodity prices can rise and fall; metals can be particularly volatile and while the price for silver may well go

up in the near future, there is no certainty that it will not go back down to its previous levels. In all honesty I can’t advise one way or another but whatever you choose to do make a well-informed decision. With all the recent hullabaloo about the Stanley Cup it was inevitable that at least one reader would ask: “What’s it worth?” Well, from information gleaned from the interweb I can report that the Cup, as we know it, is not the original one as commissioned by Lord Stanley (retail cost new in 1892: around ten guineas [$49.00 cdn]). Wikipedia states: “There are actually three Stanley Cups: the original bowl, the authenticated Cup, and the replica at the Hall of Fame.” The

original bowl is in the vault room at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Although the present Cup and the lower bands are silver and is said to weigh around 34 pounds, the majority of the weight is in the substructure and the elongated plinth (neither are silver). The Cup’s actual silver content is estimated to be as little as 4.5 pounds - at around $30 per ounce that equates to a melt value of $2,160. So as to avoid high premiums, unconfirmed reports say the NHL probably has a policy of being self-insured and it is generally accepted that the Cup is actually only insured for around $70,000. With such a low declared value, in the event of a mishap, it is

likely that insurance would not pay-out as at 70 grand it is clearly underinsured and penalties and any deductibles would be heavy. However, given the Cup’s overall history and its iconic appeal as an important piece of sport and cultural memorabilia I would give it a cursory insurance appraisal of more like $5 million. Given its potential for future revenue generation there can be no doubt if it were to ever go to public auction the eventual price could escalate by a multiplier of at least five. Regardless of any
