‘He just flew into the ground’ Spectators watch helplessly as pilot crashes CHRIS HAMLYN AND NIOMI PEARSON BLACK PRESS

Aviation enthusiasts went through a host of emotions following a crash at the Wings and Wheels air show at Nanaimo Airport. Hundreds of people gathered under sunny skies Saturday for the air show when they witnessed a self-built Steen Skybolt biplane, piloted by Dr. Bill Phipps, 71, of Campbell River, crash into a grassy section off the tarmac. Phipps is listed in stable condition after suffering significant facial and internal injuries as well as broken bones. His plane crashed during his eight-minute opening performance at the Wings and Wheel event and was taken to Victoria Hospital. Hundreds of people had gathered for the first air show hosted at the Nanaimo airport in three years, when the tragedy unfolded. Out of respect for the pilot, the rest of the airshow was cancelled

and airport authority closed the airport to all incoming and outgoing air traffic. According to Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokeperson, the plane was destroyed on impact and no one else was injured or involved. “The BC Ambulance as well as Cranberry Fire and Rescue were quickly on scene and were able to remove the male from the carnage,” he said. “Transport Canada is assuming the lead role in this investigation and the RCMP

will be assisting.” Nanaimo Flying Club President Barbara Riddy said the pilot had just undergone a medical exam before the show and was in peak condition before taking to the sky. “For them to perform, they have to produce a valid medical certificate, and the medicals that Transport Canada gives you are quite rigorous,” she said. Phipps’ performance opened the show and he was six minutes into an eight-minute routine.

Ray White of Nanaimo and his brother had front-row seats for the show and watched Phipps fly his plane past the crowd. “He was supposed to do a fourpoint roll and while we’re certainly not aviation experts by any stretch of the imagination, we both thought he was a little low for that particular manoeuvre,” said White. “As he was coming down the runway, he started to turn away instead of flying the crowd line and I said to my brother ‘he’s

Relay for Life to be a celebration for the whole community KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

This year’s Relay for Life event, which will be geared towards families, promises to be better than last year, says organizer Linda Thomas. And along with tearjerker moments when cancer survivors take to the track, there will be gut-busting laughter. As the night continues on, there will be a limbo lap where participants will have to navigate the track while shimmying as low as they can go, and a poker lap. Participants will receive a card at the end of a lap five different times and at the end, the best hand wins. There will also be a newspaper fashion show and teams will have to dress their “model” in newspaper in an allotted amount of time using only papers and tape, no scissors. “At 4 a.m. you start to get ridiculously silly and everything becomes funny so we thought we’d try this and get everybody to have some fun,” says Thomas. If that doesn’t get people laughing, some singing by the relay teams is sure to incite some giggles as each

In an article that appeared in the June 1 edition of the Mirror, titled Plan extends life of landfill, it was reported the Comox Strathcona Solid Waste Management Board made a decision last Monday to replace the city dump with a transfer station. In fact, the board had voted more than one month ago to fund a temporary transfer station at the landfill. The Mirror regrets the error. A timeline, that includes approximately one year of use of the temporary transfer station to transfer waste from Campbell River to Cumberland, will be voted on by board members at a meeting June 16.

It was tough to see the expression on the children’s faces. That was definitely the worst.” B.C. Ambulance and Cranberry Fire and Rescue personnel were on scene and removed Phipps from the wreckage. The air show was cancelled following the crash and Riddy said the spectators were patient and understanding during the ordeal. “The public was super,” she said. “There was nobody that went beyond the barriers, they all listened and were understanding when the show was cancelled.” Sara Hof, Transport Canada spokeswoman said in an e-mail to Black Press that a Transport Canada inspector was on the scene to monitor the air show and will follow up with the pilot once he is able to speak to them. The inspector will also meet with air show organizers to assess safety procedures.

The luminaries are special candles that are placed in paper bags and carry the name of cancer survivors and loved ones who have died. The paper bags, which are decorated and lit up once darkness falls, line the outside of the track; the committee’s goal is to have 1,000 luminaries, the amount it takes to fill the perimeter of the Phoenix track. As a way to give back to the community, the luminaries will be held down with a can of non perishable food, instead of sand. The day after the relay, all the cans will be given to the Campbell River Food Bank. “We talked about how to give back to Campbell River, which has always been so supportive – Relay for Life couldn’t be what it is if it wasn’t for the support of the community,” says Thomas. “So we’re asking participants and spectators to bring one can of food with them which we will in turn give to the food bank.” Thomas says event will be one big 12-hour party “that’s going to touch everyone who comes to it in some way.”

Cruising speed Sailboats in the Van Isle 360 blew into Campbell River Monday during the third leg of race around Vancouver Island. And unlike past years where there was nary a breeze, sailors were blessed with gusts reaching 20-30 knots as they left Comox. Clockwise from the top left: sailboats head past Sequoia Park and the wild roses; two boats at the finish line as the snow-capped Coastal Mountains form a nice backdrop; and three sailboats sprint to the finish line. At least four vehicles and six buildings were spray painted overnight on Saturday-Sunday, and police are looking for the culprit. “The language used was offensive to the point that some people would not drive their vehicles in public after the damage,” said Const. For immediate release: Tsa-Kwa-Luten, the Oceanfront Resort at Cape Mudge on Quadra Island celebrated its’ 20th Anniversary on June 5, 2011. Tsa-Kwa-Luten is one of several businesses owned and operated by the We Wai Kai Nation (Cape Mudge Band). Designed by Victoria Architect Philip Chang, Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge was the first of its kind in Canada. “Tsa-KwaLuten” (pronounced Saw-Kwa-Loo-Tan) means “the gathering place”. The resort is unique because it is one of the few native owned and operated resorts in Canada, featuring authentic culture, food and art as part of the native experience. The Lodge is a popular Island getaway for regional travellers in the shoulder seasons with European visitors in the summer months. The main lobby (Grand Hall) structure is designed in the style of a traditional west coast “Gukwdzi” or Big House, and contemporary native art is displayed in both the main lodge and all guest rooms. Tsa-Kwa-Luten offers a full service dining room and lounge, in addition to meeting facilities. A fitness area, dry sauna and whirlpool hot tub (located on the lower level) are also part of the main lodge. The resort offers 30 deluxe main lodge ocean view rooms and 6 beachfront cottages. The two-bedroom cottages are equipped with gas fireplaces, kitchens or kitchenettes, jetted soaker Jacuzzi bathtubs or outdoor hot tubs for comfort and convenience. Tsa-Kwa-Luten maintains an average occupancy of 76% during seasonal operations, an achievement that they are very proud of. In the spring of 2004, Tsa-Kwa-Luten developed and opened its intimate RV Park situated at waters edge of Discovery Passage. Later in 2006, Tsa-Kwa-Luten renovated what was their bait building into what is now, the ever so popular, deluxe beachfront “Wharfhouse” cottage. The most recent expansion of the operations for the Lodge is the development of the Raving Raven, a beachside grill at Rebecca Spit. Another local favorite! The main lodge rooms and the beachfront cottages have been fully renovated over the years and are always in first-class form. Tsa-Kwa-Luten is proud of its’ nature based facility and boasts a natural history walking trail through the surrounding forest. Discover the location where Captain Vancouver came ashore in 1792 or ask for direction. The Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre, only a brisk walk from the lodge, houses a sacred potlatch collection, headdresses, masks, basketry, a three-story totem and much more. Tsa-Kwa-Luten is one of the few resorts that can proudly report an entire management team that has been working together in excess of 10 years. The Lodge is in the process of positioning itself for future expansion with the renovation of the dining room and conference facilities to increase capacity and the construction of additional beachfront cottages. Our Water Islands of Shade Providing islands of shade is a sure-fire way to keep your lawn green in the heat of summer using little or no water. It’s also a way to increase habitat for creatures your garden depends on for health (micro-organisms, Luisa Richardson worms, insects, birds). Your health can benefit too, if your shade involves some fruit trees or berry bushes. To add islands of shade, first observe the pattern of sun on your lawn. Check whether you have valleys and hills and select sites that have good drainage. The following steps can be done at any time of year: • Decide how big the new bed will be, • Mow the grass and lay down cardboard or wet newspapers over top of the area, • Cut away the grass edges around the proposed bed and add an edging border, if desired, • Add eight to twelve inches of good quality soil, • If using native plants, select plants appropriate for the location and plant as closely together as you can afford, • Water well after planting, • Water according to instructions until plant is established. If using a sprinkler, observe the allowed sprinkling times, if using a hand-held hose with automatic shut-off, you can water at any time of day, though morning is best. Water use triples in summer and that most of this increase is due to inefficient lawn watering. Increased use at peak periods compromises City of CR fire-fighting ability and increases operating and capital costs. For more information on water-wise lawn and garden care, visit the CCR website or call or e-mail the water hotline: 250-203-2316, water. wise@campbellriver.ca. Written by Luisa E. Richardson, Water Conservation Educator with the City of Campbell River since 2006.

Our View

Postal strike could be costly When it comes to the Canada Postal workers strike, one question is likely to be asked a lot. Something like this, perhaps: “Who will notice?” But the same factors that make regular ‘snail’ mail less relevant are also We say: Actions likely to make whatever action the could drive postal workers’ union takes this week people away from into a long one, perhaps rivalling the epic postal strikes of the ’70s and early public service ’80s. The difference this time is that the union is in a far weaker bargaining position. Courier services and e-mail have cut deeply into Can-

ada Post’s core business – even having bills arrive by e-mail is no longer uncommon, and paying bills electronically is nearing universality – so a postal strike no longer has the possibility of bringing commerce to a standstill. That’s not to say that Canada Post is unnecessary. Social assistance cheques of various kinds still arrive via mail and, except for hand delivery, the mail is the most effective way of getting original copies of documents across the country. But what a lengthy strike will do is encourage people to make even more use of direct deposit, electronic communications and courier services as a substitute,

hastening the transformation of Canada Post into just another commercial courier service, moving farther away from its prime position of being Canada’s official carrier. Both sides in this dispute have a lot to lose if a protracted strike occurs. Both sides in this issue need to take a step back and consider how the public will react to the strike. They then need to sit down at the table and keep at the negotiations until they find an acceptable compromise. – Black Press

Good point: Highway Most mornings of the year I ride along the sea walk, on my bicycle, to keep my aging body in shape. Half the year I need lights and reflective gear because it is dark. Waking up on many winter days the noisy southraster gives me a sense of joy knowing that, for half the way, the mighty wind will push me along as I travel north from Erickson to 2nd avenue. In spring and summer I frequently have to buck into a northwesterly breeze along that same route. The extra work is good for the muscles but hard on the emotions. Sunday morning I decided to let the prevailing northwest wind help me on my way by reversing my regular route, to ride along the Oceanside from 2nd to Erickson. The sun was just peeking over the Eastern Coast range as I hit the new section of sea walk/ highway between Rockland and Hilchey. It is stunning. What a wonderful improvement to that mile or so of Sea walk/ Highway. I want to thank all those in our community and beyond who played a part to improve this section of Highway 19A. It was a heck of a lot of work. The”seaside” landscaping, attractive new pump station, widened sea walk and everything else are close to “excellent” , in my estimation. Many persons from all walks of life are frequently seen enjoying this stretch of roadway. It is a rare scenic pleasure, which any community would be privileged to have. I raise my coffee cup, in a breakfast toast to the person(s) who came up with this “improvement” idea, Continued on A7

Big Mike wants a blue jersey and more rough stuff

Conversations with Mike By Paul Rudan

“Hey there Mikey, nice flag you’ve got there!” I remarked to Big Logger Mike, our stalwart sentinel on the downtown spar pole. The white Canucks flag with the older orca logo flapped in the breeze behind the big yellow logger who didn’t look entirely happy. “Yeah, it’s okay,” he replied with a shrug. H’mm, something wasn’t quite right with Big Mike which was certainly odd in the middle of a Stanley Cup run. There are few “bigger” Canuck fans than Logger Mike, so I guessed he was still moping following Monday’s 8-1 thrashing at the hands of the Big Bad Bruins. “Don’t worry, about the ‘Nucks, they’re a great hockey team and

they’ll bounce back tonight,” I said hopefully. “Spare me the locker room pep talk will ya?” he growled back. “You don’t need to tell me about MY team.” Ouch, a little sensitive, so I asked him why he was being such a mope. “Well...,” he slowly started to explain, “I was kind of hoping they’d give me one of those new blue jerseys with the stick logo, but all I got was someone’s old, used flag!” Oh, no, I thought, here comes the whining, so I tried to interject, “But this is about showing your team spirit. It’s like Christmas time when they dress you up in that nice Santa suit...” My speech trailed off as he gave me the look of a sad dog.

“Still wanted one of those new jerseys. Even the Canuck-shuk on the Big Rock has a nice blue jersey.” Ah-ha, now we were getting to the root of the problem: Jealously. “Well, maybe the city can find a few bucks to buy you a new...” I started saying when I was cut off. “A few bucks! City hall doesn’t have two extra dimes to rub together. They couldn’t even buy me a cup of coffee, never mind a hundred-dollar Canucks jersey,” he ranted. “Come on Mike what’s the real problem?” I asked, as he let loose. “It’s this patty-cake style of hockey they’re playing nowadays. Guys skate through centre ice admiring their passes and they go into the boards with their heads down and their

backs turned. We were never taught to play the game like that!” “But...” I tried to say. “No buts, hockey ain’t the same. Back in the day, the rough-and-tumble was just the same as Friday night at the Quinnie. We could relate to the pokes, the jabs and the fights cause it took our minds off of what we did. “And what was that?” I asked. “We worked hard and a lot of guys I knew, good friends, died on the job. Outside their family and friends, no one one cared...but one little hit on the ice and people scream blue murder for these namby-pamby millionaires!” I nodded politely said the only thing I could think of: “You’re right...Go Canucks go!”

Newly-appointed minister John Duncan celebrates victory by closing his North Island office June 2, the House of Commons began a new session – the first time since the May 2 election of Stephen Harper’s conservatives. We have a majority government – another first for Canada after many years of minority governments. New MPs and ministers were sworn in and the MP for Vancouver Island North, John Duncan, began his role as the minister for the newly-named Aboriginal and Nor ther n Development ministry. So how does Mr. Duncan begin his four-year term as minister?

For starters, he has closed his northernmost office in the riding. Ye s , reliable resources tell us that Mr. Duncan decided to close his office in Port McNeill and instead direct more resources to his office in Courtenay. As the federal riding that is arguably farther away from Ottawa than most, why would our MP decide to downgrade his services in our smaller communities? In those communities north of Courtenay and Campbell River,

the federal governement has continually whittled away at government services to a point that our citizens now have to endure long hours of travel to larger communities to access help with their CPP issues, passport concerns and citizenship questions. Ye s , o f c o u r s e, these services can be accessed by phone and computer, but the people I have spoken to – many of them seniors – resent the erosion of the face-to-face people services they are familiar with. T his riding also

includes a large population of First Nations. What about their access? I am sure our First Nations are less than pleased that the minister directly responsible for their issues will be absent from at least half of the riding. As we heard last week in the former Au d i t o r G e n e r a l ’s report, the issues that First Nations peoples face are worse after 10 years– not better – and now access to a local riding office means at least a seven-hour return trip. During the election,

the team that designed and made it happen, the financial folks who pursued the monies, the various government bodies that provided the capital and the people who did the actual work. THANK YOU! If there is a suggestion box for ideas to rename this short stretch of splendor, please put in “Bounty Lane” on my behalf. D. McGillis

Mr. Duncan held the dubious record for most missed all candidates’ meetings – meetings that he had confirmed his attendance and then opted out at the last minute. Perhaps closing his office in Port McNeill is another way Minister Duncan is letting us know that he truly does not care about representing all of the people or issues in his riding. Sigh...it will be a long four-year sentence for North Islanders. Shirley Ackland, 32-year resident of the North Island

Among them, there will be potters,a printmaking studio, a fine woodworking shop and painters some of who will be on display at the Old School House Gallery. This is a opportunity for both garden and art lovers to view these gorgeous and creative spaces in the glorious Cortes Island setting to make a day of lunch, gardens and art. It will be an experience that will nourish the soul and the senses. Call 250-935-6340.

Ferries getting out of reach – MLA

2X3

KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

DOORIS BIRTH Grandparents Lee and Dennis Lukey and Leslie Dooris are so thrilled to announce the birth of our granddaughter

Tayla Janna Lukey May 28, 2011 • 8 lbs. 3 oz. Thank you so much Dr. Ramsey and Dr. Chan. Tayla will have Grampa Dooris watching over her from above. Congratulations Danielle and Justin Lukey Job Well Done!!!

Quadra Islanders can no longer afford ferry fares, according to North Island NDP MLA Claire Trevena, after the province increased costs again last week. The B.C. government passed legislation to cap fare hikes at 4.15 per cent on all routes for 2012-2013 while BC Ferries Commissioner Gord Macatee conducts a review of the ferry system that will focus

on fares increases. Macatee announced his review after BC Ferries said it wanted to increase fares by 37 per cent on minor routes over four years, starting April 2012. But Trevena believes there should be a freeze on ferry prices while the review is ongoing. “T his le gislation allows for a 4.15 per cent increase and it still allows a fuel surcharge increase of two per cent, so we have a 6.5 per cent increase while the review is going ahead,” said Trevena. “I think it’s an outrageous thing. “I’m hearing from people across the constituency that they should be rolling back fares, not increasing them.” For one vehicle, a driver and one passenger to sail from Campbell River to Quadra

Claire Trevena

and back is nearly $40, which is just too much for young families, said Trevena. “People can’t afford these fares,” she said. “People are trying to raise families and they want to take their kids swimming and have them participate in sports; they want to do things on the big island but they have to pay big fares, leaving them with less money for the necessities of life.”

T revena said on the Campbell River/ Quadra Island run, fares have increased 124 per cent over the past five years, much faster than disposable incomes. “It’s just not sustainable for people living in fer ry-dependent communities,” said Trevena. “On Quadra, people simply cannot maintain those fares and not only does it affect the lives of people living on the Island but it will have a huge impact on tourism.” She figures hefty fares will turn potential visitors away and hurt businesses on Quadra Island which she said are already starting to struggle because of ferry costs. Trevena said she hopes when the commissioner conducts his review, Macatee considers the huge increases people living in coastal communities have already had to bear. “I would hope the ferry commissioner realizes what’s happening is completely i r re s p o n s i bl e a n d accepts that the ferries

are part of our province’s highway system, and that the fares are unsustainable and should be rolled back,” said Trevena. Last week, as MLA’s sat in the legislature, Trevena told the government that there is huge inequity in the way government supports the highway infrastructure in BC: roads and bridges are maintained with public funds but it is a user pay system for the ferries. “I hope the commissioner realizes that B.C. Ferries became the way it was, by W.A.C. Bennett, because ferries were not seen to be a profitable proposition. Ferries were seen as part of our highway system,” she said. “They were not supposed to come in raking a profit. They were not supposed to come in as cruise ships. They were there to support and sustain our coastal communities”. Macatee’s review of BC Ferries is expected to take six months and will contain recommendations.

Marine Harvest happy with land-based facility The first group of salmon has now been successfully grown in a new state-of-the-art, land based aquaculture facility near Sayward, Campbell Riverbased Marine Harvest Canada says. The facility was built with state-of-the-art recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) technology, which can re-use about 99 per cent of the freshwater in the system through complex cleaning and re-oxygenation technology. Currently, this system allows salmon

farmers to grow smolts (young salmon ready for saltwater) for about one year in a carefully controlled and diseasefree environment. The salmon, which were g rown to 80 grams in size, were the first to be raised in the new facility, which represents a significant investment in the Sayward area. The 60 tonne facility is owned by Marine Harvest Canada (MHC) and is the first of a two phase investment that will cost the company $6.3 million. The salmon smolts

have now been successfully transferred to Marine Harvest’s marine sites for further growth to market size. “These smolts grew very well and are very healthy,” stated Craig Schelter, Manager at MHC’s Sayward North freshwater facility. “This new technology worked well for us and we’re very happy with the product we’ve sent to sea.” Marine Harvest technicians continue to learn about this new technology, but early results suggest the

recycling of freshwater is working well. “To be able to grow our land-based farming in a sustainable way, we have to find ways of conserving freshwater usage,” notes Dean Guest, Freshwater Manager at MHC. “RAS systems will allow us to raise more smolts at our existing facilities while actually utilizing less freshwater. This technology has been developed by aquaculture producers around the world and is an important part of our sustainability goals here in BC.”

The RAS technology was purchased from Inter Aqua Advanced of Denmark and was built with the help of numerous local contractors. Another facility of similar size is now being built at the same location. Marine Harvest is BC’s leading salmon far ming company with head offices in Campbell River and is northern Vancouver Island’s largest private employer, with 550 direct staff employed at its freshwater hatcheries, saltwater farms and processing plants.

Segregated Funds (Seg Funds) are similar to mutual funds except, since they are under the insurance Peter Garat act, they have a few distinctly different characteristics. They Certified Financial Planner can be excellent investment vehicles for structuring your estate to flow to your spouse, children, or other heirs. Like an insurance policy, you can name a beneficiary on a Seg Fund. This means that the cash value, or death benefit (whichever is higher) will flow directly to the named beneficiary, and quickly. How can I pass money to my kids without the CRA getting a big piece?

Campbell River has a temperate, humid climate which is very appealing to fleas yearround. Many pet owners prefer to wait until their pets get infested with fleas and then treat with a product to kill the fleas. In the past when toxic dips, powders and collars were the only products available to kill fleas, this was the best practice. Most modern flea products used properly have a very high safety margin and so monthly Dr. Kevin Penner prevention is generally recommended over a Veterinarian more reactionary approach. Fleas have 3 life stages, the adult which lives on animals, as well as egg and larvae which live in the environment. The environment includes carpets, couches, beds and basically everywhere a flea infested pet might go. In 60 days a single adult flea can responsible for an infestation of 20 000 adult fleas along with 160 000 eggs and larvae. By the time you notice fleas on your pet, you could already have a big problem in your house. Flea allergy is the single most common allergy in dogs and cats. The more times they are bit by fleas the more likely they are to develop an allergy problem. This is another reason to prevent rather than treat. Build extra time into your flight schedules. In the early years of passenger air travel, prudent sea-goers generally opted either to take the train or to travel a day in advance of sailing due to the tenuous dependability of flight schedules. Anyone who has traveled by air recently may feel they have Christina Peterson, been thrown back into aviation’s dark ages, given the frequency of significant Flight Centre Associate delays in our air transport system. Whether you blame it on increased security concerns, deteriorating weather, crumbling air traffic infrastructure or understaffing of the air traffic control system, the causes matter not. The results do. Currently, on-time performance figures hover around 75 percent. In other words, for every two cruises you take the odds are that one of your flights will be delayed. Given those figures, the prudent traveler allows plenty of time to make connections between flights (I insist on at least two hours) and to get to the ship from the airport. If you can’t get a flight that arrives more than four or five hours before your ship departs, opt to fly in the day before. Problem alcoholic back in jail PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

There are very few people in the city who command the RCMP’s attention like George Chickite. Since 2007, police have dealt with the p ro bl e m a l c o h o l i c more than 300 times; 102 times alone in 2010. In January, Chickite, 49, was jailed two months for uttering threats and theft which prompted Provincial Court Judge Peter

Doherty to remark, “It will give the community a bit of respite.” But on March 17, Chickite was back on the street and ran up four more convictions for breaching probation. Now he’s back in jail. C h i ck i t e ’s l at e s t run-in with the law occurred on his birthday, June 3. It was around 9:15 p.m. when an officer was waiting near JJ’s Pub, on the lookout for potential impaired drivers, when he spotted Chickite

walking. At the time, Chickite was prohibited from going anywhere close to the nearby Lite House Centre, a daytime soup kitchen operated by the Salvation Army. It was here, on Jan. 17, where he threatened to kill a woman who allegedly owed him money. When the of ficer stopped Chickite, he could also smell a strong odour of liquor, and Chickite arrested for breaching conditions of his probation. Chickite was initially

co-operative, but then became verbally abusive towards the officer, complaining that he had been arrested on his birthday. Chickite spent the weekend in a cell at the RCMP detachment and on Monday, appeared before Judge Brian Saunderson in provincial court. At the bail hearing, C row n p ro s e c u t o r John Boccabella asked for Chickite’s detention, based on the likelihood he would commit further offences

or breach probation again. Boccabella also thought Chickite would be more likely to get medical help in jail for his various ailments. “I like his chances better inside,” he told the court. However, defence lawyer Doug Marion of fered a dif ferent view. He suggested that Chickite was unlikely to get prompt medical attention because of over-crowding at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Facility in Victoria. Marion pointed out that Chickite is suffering from a skin condition and has rashes all over his body. As well, Chickite may have alcoholic gastritis. On his birthday, Marion said, Chickite went to the hospital due to his medical conditions and then was dropped off near JJs so he could go to a drugstore to fill a prescription. But Judge Saunderson declined to free Chickite who has no money to post bail or to offer a surety. Judge Saunderson also ordered the sheriff to make specific enquires to ensure Chickite receives prompt medical attention and asked that a report be sent back soon to make sure his order is carried out. Chickite is due back in court, by video appearance, on Monday.

fter spending the last six months feverishly playing throughout the Comox Valley, Fiftieth Parallel returns to Serious Coffee in Campbell River for their first full concert at the venue in June. Featuring Philip Marchand on guitar and Jonathan Hinds on guitar and djembe, they bring their own unique sound to the already vibrant Vancouver Island music scene. The influences of acoustic guitar geniuses such as Andy McKee and John Butler shine through clearly, but there is also a blend of Pink Floyd and the more obscure Kyuss thrown in for good measure. Each of the many performances Fiftieth Parallel has played so far has been fantastically received by each audience; whether it be draw-

From the airy simplicity of the Pink Floyd-esque Red & Blue all the way to the technical guitar drumming of Zed, the variety of Fiftieth Parallel’s original material will impress you, even if their music somehow fails to amaze. “I was blown away by their talent at one of our Open Mic

Their newlyreleased, self-titled EP will also be on sale, which they hope to follow with their debut album later in the year.

Piano prodigy prepares for national competition

I

t’s Friday night and 14-year-old Carter Johnson has just finished his homework. It’s not because he really loves homework. It’s because Carter didn’t get to be one of the best young pianists in Canada by slacking off. Tonight, he has to be organized in order to get in enough practice time, pack, and travel to Kamloops the next morning for a provincial competition. And there’s no slowing the pace. Next month, he will be British Columbia’s representative at the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association’s National Piano Competition in Regina, Saskatchewan. Only one pianist from each province is selected to perform. He’s hoping to be named one of the top three, maybe even the best pianist in Canada under age 25. He didn’t get this far without an awful lot of practice time. Carter spends at least an hour a day at his grand piano. But although practice is crucial, he’s reluctant to say that practice makes perfect.

Carter Johnson is B.C.’s representative at a national piano competition in Regina.

“I read somewhere that practice makes permanent,” Carter says with a grin that shows off his braces. “If you practice something wrong over and over again, it’s going to stay there.” So Carter is pretty meticulous about making sure he practices it right. It’s paying off – his teacher Shelley Roberts has trained him well, and she is very proud of him. “It’s a privilege to teach and work with

Carter,” Roberts says. “He’s demonstrated such devotion and passion for his music. He is a rare, gifted musician and a remarkable young man.” Carter really is a remarkable young man. Unlike many of his peers, whose only exposure to music is pressing coloured buttons on a plastic guitar to score points in a video game, Carter is making real music. He is always looking for music that will inspire him to be

a better pianist and seeks out new musical experiences. He is currently learning a second instrument, the oboe, which he says gives him a better appreciation for playing with an orchestra and for piano music written to accompany an orchestra. It helps. Carter recently performed a piano concerto with the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra, and orchestra director Pippa Williams had high praise. “Carter is a delightful soloist with exceptional technique and precision,” she said. “His playing is full of elegance and charm and particularly beautiful were his cadenzas and interplay with the orchestra.” Carter definitely knows his music. When he starts talking about composers, he sounds more knowledgeable than a CBC Radio 2 announcer. He knows so much because he listens to so many different composers and genres of classical music. He figures his listening habits have had big influences on his style. “The more you lis-

ten, the better you’ll be able to play,” he says. “Listen to lots of music, the good and the bad performances. Learn the difference, and it helps you be a better player.” When he’s not practicing, Carter is already working as a piano teacher, passing his knowledge on to his own students. “They’re doing very well, I’m very proud of them,” he says. In fact, he adds, they’ve taught him a thing or two. “By teaching, you learn more yourself,” he says. “I realized that if I’m telling them to do something, I should do it myself !” Carter’s trip to Regina for the finals in July is not going to be cheap, so he is holding a fundraiser concert to help pay for his travel costs. On June 12, 7 p.m. at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, Carter will be performing works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms , Ginastera and Hétu. Admission is by donation.

Riverite contributes to Canucks’ playoff run KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

R

obyn Izard is working her “dream job.” She’s right in the middle of the excitement of the Stanley Cup finals and is on a firstname basis with members of the Vancouver Canucks. Izard, who grew up in Campbell River, scored a job as a massage therapist for the Canucks. “It’s great, it’s a dream job,” says Izard. “We massage at Rogers Arena and I’ve seen the media attention get more and more intense as the team goes farther into the playoffs.” Izard, who has been with the Canucks as an intern for the past couple of months, works on soft-tissue injuries and also provides the players with what she calls “maintenance stuff ” to relax the muscles to prevent injury. She has been working with the team on home practice days and has not travelled with the team or attended any games, although on occasion she has been given concert tickets.

She also has official team pants and a jacket, and she bought a Canucks jersey which the team signed. Izard has worked with the players since round one of the playoffs, when the Canucks battled the Chicago Blackhawks, and has commuted back and forth from Ver non, where she lives now, and Vancouver. L a s t F r i d ay s h e received the best news she could have ever imagined. The Canucks had decided to hire Izard to officially join its staff of therapists. “I was asked to be a supplementary trainer so I don’t know yet how often I’ll be working, but I will be based out of Vancouver and I feel pretty honoured to have gotten the call,” says Izard. What she does know is that her first day as an official Vancouver Canucks employee will be at training camp this September in Vancouver. Which is, ironically, where she got her start with the team. She first met the Canucks when she pro-

vided massage therapy for the players during their training camp in Penticton last September.

Izard, who graduated from massage therapy school in Vernon in January, was one of a few students who had

the opportunity to attend training camp after a Canucks team trainer contacted her school looking for

interested students. “I got to know the guys at training camp and they’re great,” says Izard.

So when playof fs rolled around and the team was looking for two extra massage therapists, Izard jumped at the chance. “I just applied and I figured ‘if you want something, you ask’ so I did because it had gone well the first time but I didn’t expect anything so I was surprised to be hired,” says Izard. She plans to move from Vernon to the Lower Mainland sometime this summer but for now, Izard’s just enjoying it and soaking it all in. “It hasn’t happened since I was a kid that they’ve reached this round so it’s definitely exciting to be around the team during the Stanley Cup finals,” says Izard. “I’ll remember it forever.” Izard says her new job is also a big thrill for her family, particularly her dad, retired teacher Bruce Izard. “My dad’s the ultimate fan and I think my dad’s been bragging about it. He’s proud, it’s cute,” says Izard. “I grew up watching the games with my dad and brother, so it’s pretty awesome.”

Ravens fall

Continued from A10 Ravens’ defense with Logan Down facing 19 shots on goal in the second compared to the Ravens’ 11, and although he made many great saves, Westshore would gain a second goal with four minutes left in the period and then a third with 10 seconds left. The second period ended Ravens 4, Bears 3. The Ravens had won the first two periods but Westshore was moving forward and would score with less then three minutes into the third to tie things up at four-a-side. At 10:02 it was Campbell River’s turn to get another goal when Arran Marlow passed the ball to Smith who found the slot for the Ravens’ fifth and his third goal for the hat trick. With 21 shots on net, the Ravens were playing a lot of defense and Westshore would score on a rebound at 8:46 and again two minutes later to give them the winning goal. At the end of the game, the scoreboard showed a 6-5 loss to Campbell River over Westshore in another close PNWJLL game. Coach Reg Elgie felt the boys played well but need to win the little battles, don’t chase on defense and calm themselves on the floor. This showed in game stats as Westshore would win 48 loose balls throughout the game over the Ravens 36 which also played a huge role in the number of shots on net. All this giving the Ravens goalie Logan Down lots of action as he has been named the top goalie of the league by the Island Chair. Are you Raven-ously hungry?... This week the Ravens will hold their burger night fundraiser on Thursday and next weekend travel to Duncan for game seven on Saturday, June 11 at 3:30 to face off against the first place Cowichan team.

Buchanan keeps streak alive Saratoga Speedway once again hosted a night of racing with hornet cars, crash to pass, roadrunners, and bombers on the racing card for the evening. The Roadrunner class raced their fourth race of the season on Saturday, with fast time on the night going to Weston Lane who set a time of 19.399 in qualifying. Andrew Buchanan won yet another dash on Saturday. Buchanan has actually won every dash for the roadrunner division this season. Buchanan also dominated the heat, taking the lead on lap 1, going on to win his second race on the night. The feature race for the roadrunner division had an interesting twist. Andrea Cannon started a whole lap ahead, meaning that Buchanan and Lane would have to make up a whole lap to take the lead from Cannon. Cannon once again proved why he’s the point’s leader in this division, managing to catch Andrea in 10 laps to take the lead and the eventual. Cannon finished second and third to Weston. Travis Stevenson had an amazing night in the Crash to Pass class. Fast time in qualifying on the night went to Cam Edward who set a time of 18.535. Stevenson took the dash, leading the race flag to flag. Cam Edward led the heat for six laps until Stevenson caught him on the back stretch, spinning out Edward. Stevenson would go on to win the 10 lap heat, with second going “The General” Jeff May. The 15-lap main saw Edward once

again lead the beginning of the race, but once again, Stevenson would catch him on lap four and take away the lead. Stevenson would battle hard with Jeff May the rest of the way but held him off to win his third win out of three races on the night. Second went to Jeff May and third to Cam Edward. Some amazing racing took place in the Bomber car division on Saturday. Co driver to the #11 bomber car, Mike Dionne, set fast time in qualifying with a time of 17.692. The B dash went to Travis Stevenson, who was racing two cars on the night. The A dash went to Johnny Zanette. All nine cars took to the track for the heat. Darrell Larson led for four laps until Zanette took the lead and the eventual win. The 25-lap feature saw Larson once again take an early lead. Larson would lead up until lap six, giving up the lead to Mike Dionne.

Dionne would lead for the rest of the race and had the race won; but after the race was over, Dionne did not report to the tech pad, which under Speedway rules, calls for a disqualification. Gilles Cyr finished second in the race, so the win went to him. Second went to Darrell Larson, and third to Travis Stevenson who had himself quite the night. The hornet car division once again had a great field of cars on Saturday. Fast time in qualifying went to Gord Fraser who set a time of 18.261. The D dash went to Brianne Fenn, which was her first ever win at Saratoga Speedway. The C dash went to Jeremy Stormo, B to Ted Dimitrov, and A to Kevin Lawrenuk. In the Hornet C heat, Stormo took an early lead and never looked back, taking the win. Dave Hargraves led the B heat for six laps until Jennifer Lawrenuk,

who was sporting a new car on the night, took the lead and the eventual win. Daryn Cahill led the A heat from start to finish, taking home the win. The 20-lap B feature saw Trevor Dicus lead for four laps until eventual winner Calvin Chamberlin took the lead. Chamberlin would battle off Dicus to take the win. Dicus

would finish in second, with third going to Dave Hargraves. The 30-lap A feature saw William Boyes lead for 12 laps until Kevin Lawrenuk took the lead coming out of turn three. Lawrenuk would spread his lead from there and take the win. A little bit of drama at the end gave Daryn Cahill second, and Gord Fraser third.

Celebrate Community! Relay For Life.

The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is a celebration of suvival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. Cancer outreach depends on motivated, caring people who take the time to inform our community about cancer research, statistics, symptoms and the latest medical interventions available. Together these people make up our nation’s many cancer organizations. Because of them, it’s possible for volunteers to contribute time, energy and money to a specific group or organization they know they can trust. Most importantly, these cancer organizations provide continued support and advice to cancer patients, their friends and family members.

Gathering Place benefits from recycled tire fund Kids at the Gathering Place playground will have a softer landing thanks to a grant from Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC). Laichiltach Family Life Society will receive funding for the installation of rubber tiles at a new playground at the Gathering Place. Now in its third year, TSBC’s 2011 Community Grant Program provides financial support to communities that use BC recycled rubber products in projects such as playgrounds, spray parks or running tracks. “We’re thrilled to be able to help communities with the funding they need to make their projects a reality,” says Mike Hennessy, TSBC Executive Director. “These projects are meant to enhance the community experience for all residents. What’s more, by securing the

use of BC recycled rubber in these projects we’re providing employment and economic benefits right here at home.” “This grant will mean a very successful program that supports at risk children, ages 0-12 will have an outdoor space to utilize,” says Cheryl Jordan, Success by 6 Coordinator. “Children need safe, clean places to play and through the generosity of TSBC this will now be a reality.” A total of 12 projects chosen from 11 communities across BC will share in a portion of the grants, worth a total of $127,000. Together, these projects will use more than 127 thousand pounds of recycled crumb rubber, thereby bringing the equivalent of 9,500 tires back in to B.C.’s communities in a beneficial second life as recycled rubber products.

Funding for The Community Grant Program comes directly from the Advance Disposal Fee or “eco-fee”, that each retailer remits to TSBC for every new tire sold. These fees also

go directly towards the operation of the scrap-tire recycling program, including the transportation and recycling of BC’s scrap tires to ensure they are disposed of in environmentally responsible ways,
