Treasure it or toss it? W

e all see it time and again on the Antiques Roadshow; little old person waits in line for five hours just to show the expert something which they think has no value. Expert gasps in amazement and declares that the item is a ‘national treasure, worth an absolute fortune!’ Little old person whoops with joy and says ‘… of course I’d never sell it. It’s been in the family for generations, we always thought it was worthless.’ Months later we hear that said item has sold for a record price and little old person is now living in luxury in the Bahamas. Perhaps a slight exaggeration but it is based upon the reality of what we regularly encounter on the show. It makes us wonder a few things; if the person really did think it was worthless then why did they bring it in and then hang around in a line-up for five hours? (Remember the lady with the old gym bag?). If it was worthless why has it been kept by the family for eons? And why, when they do discover it

and never used or even admired then what value does it have? Is it worthless because it has no financial value, or is it worthless because it is never used although it actually does have a financial value? On the other hand, the voice goes on to say “if it is worth something but never used wouldn’t it be better to sell it and put the cash to a much needed cause or even to buy myself something I really need or want?” As a consumer society we seem to have become a culture of ‘pack rats’ gathering and keeping things simply because we can. It’s as if having ‘things’ around us gives us a sense of security; albeit a false one. As an immigrant myself I am so glad that I arrived here with virtually nothing - it made it so much easier to leave where I was and begin fresh in Canada. Consider how simplified life can be when we only surround ourselves with what actually adds value to our lives. The current quiet movement towards ‘de-cluttering’ and going green is not simply a fad or a hang over from ‘hippy’ days,

it is a sound basis for quiet contentment. Surrounding ourselves with useless things is like continually having negative thoughts - both make us prisoners. As spring emerges and nature begins to renew itself perhaps it’s also time for us to re-evaluate our surroundings; ‘tis the time to clear out the crap and appreciate the positive. But before you throw stuff out have someone such as an appraiser check that it really isn’t ‘a national treasure.’ If something you no longer need or use does turn out to be a hidden gem then selling it off isn’t greed; its just common sense.

Young skiers getting schooled in life Kole Harle and Liam Gilchrist who go to school on Mount Washington raced their way to break the top ten in the provincial ski racing championships. But skiing success is not all the two youths are racing their way towards. They’re also combining they’re love for ski racing with an education. Harle raced his way to two gold medals, and a 5th, 6th and 7th place. Gilchrist won a bronze medal and a 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th place. The provincial championships, which was held at Mount Washington, hosted the best 11 and 12 year old skiers from all over the province. Over 70 racers were attempting to qualify for the prestigious Whistler cup, an international event held the second week of April. Later this week racers will find out if they qualified for the event. Both boys are 12 years old and attend the Podium of Life Ski Academy where they

go to school on Mount Washington in Grade 7. They are a part of a small group of students who have chosen an alternative to public education. Presently, there are nine full time students from Grade 6-10 who go to school on the mountain. The academy has also enrolled eight other students for short periods of time, one day to one month, from grade 3 to grade 12. After a morning of academics in the main ski lodge, students spend time ski training. This daily time on snow has helped the two racers succeed both at school and skiing. “It is fun at school because I can speed ahead at my own pace in what interests me,” says Harle. “And I really like skiing every day.” Of the 17 students who have been a part of the Podium of Life Ski Academy this season, four have been ski racers, and the other 13 have been

coming up the first week of April in Whistler, athletes have chosen to receive specific training at the Podium of Life. With this extra specific training, Podium of Life skiers are expected to do quite well in Whistler. Success at skiing is only one of the three goals of the academy whose goal is to create excited learners,

excellent skiers, and leaders of tomorrow. “It is exciting to see that the training we offer makes such a big difference for skiers,” Says founder Shane Harle. “But the true success is the excitement in learning and the academic achievement of the students.” Classes are held in the morning in the main lodge at

the Marmots Den. Each student has an individual academic plan and works on his or her laptop. Often projects are created around relevant issues like the crisis in Japan. Students become excited about demonstrating their learning in a creative manner, especially when the subject seems important to them.

This year has been a great first year for the Podium of Life Ski Academy. With just two weeks left in the Podium of Life, students are still testing it out for a day, looking towards enrolment next season. Inquiries for next year have already come from the mainland, other provinces, and other countries over seas.

The ripple effects of the Olympics are starting to create waves for the St. Jules Method Performance Products line developed by local personal trainer and equipment manufacturer Marc St. Jules. “I’m having quite a year so far with my product line as a result of the 2010 Olympics,” said St. Jules. “I feel that 2011 is my comeback year. 2010 was a year of selfdestruction and selfdiscovery following a tragic year in 2009. “There were alot of ups and downs with the death of my mother, divorce and business burnout from the goliath undertaking of the Athletes United Sports Fitness Symposium and Pound for Pound Fitness Challenge, which I put on at Bear Mountain Golf Resort in Victoria,” St. Jules said. “I’ve always done events and fundraisers for local and international charities which I believe in. Some of them don’t raise as much money as I’d like but the awareness often makes up for it,” he said. So far, St.Jules has put on events to benefit Kidsport, Free the Children, Special Olympics, World Police and Fire Games, BC Cancer Foundation, Vancouver Island Burn Fund, Food Bank, Disabled Skiers Association, and Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue, to name a few. “That is part of the reason I believe I was nominated for Canada’s Top 40 under 40 in 2009,” he said. “I knew that

Conference restores traditional roles J.R. Rardon Black Press PORT HARDY — At one table, young children sat between their grandparents, quietly working on crafts projects. At another, a teen huddled with older relatives in discussion. At yet another, a pair of elders carried on a discussion while visitors stopped by, acknowledged greetings and moved on. Another table at

the front of the room was empty, save for a wireless microphone. Eventually, with no apparent signal, a chair scraped, a woman rose and walked to that microphone. After introducing herself, she launched into a catalogue of her family lineage, sketched her own history, then informed the younger members of the “audience” that the future would be given over to their stories. And so went

the first A Cross Generation Conference last week at Port Hardy’s Civic Centre, a unique, twoday gathering of elders, children and families that drew participants from three First Nations reserves in the surrounding area. “We wanted to bring all the elders together from the surrounding communities, to share their knowledge and stories with our youth,” said Janet Hanuse, the event coordinator.

“Our traditional roles were lost with the legacy of the residential schools, but our communities are turning around, and turning in a healthy direction.” Participation in last week’s conference was certainly healthy, and wildly exceeded Hanuse’s expectations. From the Fort Rupert, Quatsino and Gwa’sala’Nakwaxda’xw reserves they came — first the elders, then the young Cont. on Page 9

Children mingle with elders From Page 8 children with parents. Eventually word spread and even teens wandered in. “I thought we’d have about 15 elders, and we ended up getting 40,” said Hanuse. “With the youth, we had eight registered, but another 40 came. Then the parents of the youth heard and they came out. “The turnout is a lot more than I was expecting.” The event, sponsored by the North Island Crisis Counseling Centre, the Sasamans Society and Sacred Wolf Friendship Centre, was a decidedly informal, low-key affair. comfortable silence or while listening to more stories. Participants were free to come

and go from the hall throughout the two days without judgement, and some children could be found playing in the nearby skateboard park in between visits to the elders’ tables. “We’ve probably had about 200 people coming and going the last two days,” Hanuse said on the final afternoon of the conference. “It’s been very relaxed, very informal. “But the point is to tell the youth that they’re in charge of the future. That they can listen to the elders’ stories and see how that applies to their lives in the community.”

Crisis line marks year of service The new Vancouver Island Crisis Line – one number for the whole Island – has completed its first year of operation. Change can be difficult but sometimes it can bring forth new possibilities. The crisis line service was challenged to make it through a difficult time of transition. The way things had been done for 40 years had to be re-examined, reshaped and streamlined to give all residents of Vancouver Island consistency in service, 24 hours a day, seven days a week with public access to mental health professionals in

their communities. The new one number service – 1-888-494-3888 – started its transition last March by accepting calls from the Courtenay area and slowly transitioned until finally accepting calls from all areas of Vancouver Island including Victoria by the end of June. To date, the new service has received approximately 32,000 calls with their busiest day seeing 155 calls answered. Until this time, the local numbers being used by callers have been automatically forwarded into the new

number. They have been busy distributing promotional materials announcing the new number so that they can feel confident that the public will know where to call when the local numbers are no longer in use. Even still, there will be a message on the local crisis line numbers advising callers of the new one access number. This distribution of promotional materials included updates to every school on Vancouver Island. The new number is also listed next to 911 in phone directories. The organization’s message is that anyone who feels overwhelmed with their circumstances should pick up the phone and give them a call at 1-888-4943888. Vancouver Island Crisis Line has non-judgmental, empathetic, caring people that are willing to listen and provide encouragement.
