Microbiology lab services will remain in Campbell River and District Hospital pending further review. Until the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) can establish benchmarks for the timing of notification of test results, it will not move to consolidate microbiology services in Victoria. Three microbiologists conducted a review of medical microbiology services at hospitals in Campbell River, Nanaimo and Victoria in February. On Monday they shared their preliminary findings and recommendations with VIHA. “We accept the recommendations of the external reviewers and thank all the physicians and staff for their time and input into this important review,” said Dr. Richard Chow, VIHA Chief Medical Officer. “We will begin to work to implement these recommendations, including establishing delivery benchmarks that are based on recommended best practice.” VIHA considered centralizing its medical microbiology lab services last spring to save money. The health authority said microbiology is becoming increasingly specialized and requires special

equipment which it can’t afford to put in all three hospitals. After medical staff at hospitals in Campbell River and Nanaimo argued that removing those services from the local hospital would compromise patient care, VIHA ordered an independent review into the feasibility of centralization. The biggest complaint from Dr. Aref Tabarsi, director of lab services at Campbell River hospital, was that test samples could be contaminated during transport to Victoria and come back with inaccurate results. “The purpose of testing is to get a reliable result but if you’re doing something to the test, it’s being put in jeopardy and you might as well not even do the test at all,” said Tabarsi. VIHA says medical staff will deter mine what tur naround times are acceptable before determining whether or not to consolidate. “Once these standards have been established, monitored and trialed, VIHA and microbiology stakeholders, including physicians and lab staff, will be able to determine what, if any changes will be made on a permanent basis to improve quality standards for patients,” said a release from VIHA. VIHA anticipates a final review to complete by the end of May.

Cumberland mayor wants to re-open new hospital proposal for region SCOTT STANFIELD BLACK PRESS

Mayor Fred Bates feels a new hospital near Crown Isle in Courtenay is not the best location from a patient’s standpoint. In fact, he says, the locale “would least improve patient care going forward,” he said at Monday’s council meeting. Bates also objects to replacing the original

single regional hospital concept with a community hospital-support model, with new facilities in the Comox Valley and Campbell River. On behalf of Cumberland council, he has expressed these objections in writing to the Vancouver Island Health Authority and Health Ministry but has yet to receive a response. Bates says VIHA’s

original proposal to build a state-of-theart regional hospital in close proximity to either the Comox Valley or Campbell River — and a community facility in the other — was forward-thinking. “Their conclusion was that the status quo of two hospitals serving Campbell River and Comox Valley is not sustainable for many reasons,” Bates states in a report to

council, noting insufficient volume in each area would not attract enough specialists. Bates, who chaired the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District board, said the regional hospital in the Dove Creek area north of Cumberland was originally to cost about $350 million. “It is very disappointing to see that their plan was not followed in the end, and now the

recommendation is to spend more than $600 million to build a new full hospital in each area,” he said, noting consultants recommended the best location would be near the Inland Island Highway (Highway 19) or on the Comox Valley Parkway, the main entrance to Courtenay from Highway 19. “We agree the new hospital should not be on the (Comox) pen-

insula, across bridges that are congested and in danger of flooding, and should be closer to the inland highway for access reasons.” Bates hopes local government, VIHA and the ministry can revisit the original proposal before the province commits to a new hospital at the top of Ryan Road in Courtenay. “Patient care is being totally ignored,” said Coun. Bronco Mon-

crief, also a former hospital board chair. Council approved his motion to forward a letter to the NDP health critic along with the other parties. “We need to do something,” Coun. Leslie Baird said. Village council will solicit public and professional opinion about the proposed hospital location at its next committee of the whole meeting.

and the presence of construction vehicles. The 30 kilometre per hour construction speed limit will be in effect during this preparation phase. The road will open each night and any constructionrelated obstacles will be clearly marked. It is possible that poor weather conditions could delay or extend the road closure.

June 3. This closure will allow for the final paving of the upgraded highway. Initial preparation work will start this week. This work will be limited to areas other than the driving lanes, with the contractor employing localized traffic control measures. During this period, be aware of renewed construction activity

City council wants the community’s help in deciding whether to change the name of Highway 19A and if so, what it should be called. The city is considering changing the name of the section of Old Island Highway that runs through the city boundaries. Council wants to know if people support the idea to change the name and is asking for new name suggestions from people who support the change. People can indicate their preference for a name change and submit their name suggestions through an online form on the city’s website or they can mail in their suggestions to City Hall. “We’re looking forward to hearing people’s suggestions for names that represent this unique roadway

and create a distinct image for this part of Campbell River, names like Oceanview Road or Marine Drive,” says Mayor Charlie Cornfield. Name suggestions must be submitted by May 25 and will be compiled and presented to council in June, when council will make the final decision on a possible name change for this route. The electronic form will be available for use on the City’s website at campbellriver.ca under What’s New after May 11. There is an option on the form for people to indicate that they do not support the name change. Mail in suggestions can be sent to: City of Campbell River, 301 St. Ann’s Road, Campbell River, B.C., V9W 4C7 All name suggestions will be entered in a random draw for prizes.

Councillors take up garbage complaints KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Coun. Andy Adams says the garbage issue “isn’t going away” and he still receives complaints from people who have had their trash left on the curb by the garbage collectors. Adams said most recently he heard from a resident who didn’t h ave h i s g a r b a g e picked up because the contractor, Emterra, had determined his load of garbage was overweight. But the complainant weighed the garbage himself and knew it was at the correct weight, said Adams. “Complaints are solely based on the subjective nature of collection,” said Adams at last week’s Tuesday council meeting. “I hope we can get this

corrected and I urge city staff to bring forward suggestions.” Coun. Ziggy Stewart agreed the city has a problem on its hands. “For a lot of people having these issues, they feel they’re paying more but getting less,” said Stewart. “We can’t gloss it over and pretend it’s not there. Obviously there’s some issues.” Stewart himself was a victim of picky garbage collectors. He said he accidentally left a glass bottle in his recycling box

only to find not only had the bottle not been taken away but the entire bin of recycling had been left. The city changed its garbage collection regulations to one can with a volume of 80 litres and weighing 20 kilograms last January. Hundreds of complaints from the public pushed the city to implement a grace period until April to educate the public on the changes and how to meet the new standards. Since that time, city hall has still been dealing with angry customers. City Manager Andy Laidlaw said staff met with Emterra last week to go over the rules and re-iterate Emterra’s responsibilities and since then, the complaints seem to have

decreased. “We had a blip there in terms of complaints but it seems to be settling down now,” said Laidlaw, who also spoke with Emterra about customer relations. “There has been some abuse of Emterra staff by the public but that seems to be few and far between,” he said. Coun. Claire Moglove believes the problem is the change in flexibility. She acknowledged under the previous contract, Emterra was a lot more lenient with people who were filling their one can above the allowable volume and now that is no longer the case. “With the new contract not only has the flexibility lessened but there is no flexibility whatsoever and it’s creating problems for

MINING

lots of people,” said Moglove. “Can’t we discuss with the contractor when to be flexible? “For instance, if you forgot and put a glass bottle in the recycling, can’t they still take it, but just not the glass bottle? “I don’t understand why we can’t have some flexibility.” L a i d l aw s a i d h e would take those concerns to Emterra and believes the issues will be reduced as the city works more closely with the contractor.

occasions when police arrived in the neighbourhood, the prowler had fled on foot to the woods surrounding the ERT road which is permanently closed to motor vehicle traffic. But this time they would be patient. According to Crown prosecutor David Fitzsimmons, the officers saw the culprit moving through the shadows as he approached a home in the 1300 block of Evergreen. And when he approached the front porch and a security light came on, he “skillfully” moved back into

the shadows. But the light also awoke the residents who looked outside and spotted the culprit trying to open the doors on their vehicle. When the male resident went outside to confront the thief, that’s when the awaiting police officers also made their move. Morgan Green was arrested at the scene and has remained in custody since then. On Monday in Campbell River provincial court, Green appeared by video from jail in Victoria. He was appearing for

a bail hearing, but did not have a lawyer and declined to have legal representation. Fitzsimmons asked for Green’s detention based on his four-page criminal record that includes convictions for break and enter, theft, possession of stolen property, and nine for breaching court orders. When Judge Brian S a u n d e r s o n a s ke d Green if he had anything to say, Green simply replied “no.” As a result, the judge ordered his detention, but then Green entered guilty pleas

to attempted theft and trespassing at night. However, he also pleaded not guilty to possession of stolen goods. During his arrest, police found an iPod on Green that had been stolen from vehicle in Victoria. As a result of the guilty pleas, Judge Saunderson sentenced Green to 48 days jail, taking into account the time he’s already served. Green is due back in court, by video, on May 16, to set a trial date for possession of stolen property.

said the suspect was still in the tyee Spit area. The officer returned to his police car and was about to begin a search, when the suspect emerged from nearby bushes

and charged the victim again. When the officer ordered him to stop, the suspect went after the officer and knocked him to the ground. A struggle ensued, but once

a second police officer arrived, the 44-year-old man was subdued and taken into custody. Earl Wilson of Campbell River is charged with assault and assault on a peace officer.

know if your grass roots live in root paradise or in an airless, waterless desert? If you are not aerating your lawn once a year, then it’s likely conditions down under are becoming more and more Luisa Richardson hostile to life. Good for a Martian atmosphere documentary, perhaps, but not great for your lawn. Over time, traffic on lawns compacts the underlying soil, as dirt particles are squeezed more closely together and air spaces narrow or decline. The loss of air space between soil particles leaves little room for water or air. Irrigation or rain water cannot penetrate compacted soil and will run off onto adjacent areas. This means that whether you add the recommended one inch or tons more water, you are not getting to the root. Aerating the lawn leaves air spaces to allow water to seep into the soil. It provides air to the microorganisms that will break down thatch and grass clippings. Air, water, food: these three necessities will improve the quality of the shelter that the microorganisms need. Your lawn will benefit – enormously. Aerate your lawn at least once a year, preferably in early summer or early autumn, when grass is growing the fastest. This is a critical step to improve irrigation efficiency. Did you know that average water use triples in summer time and that most of this increase is due to inefficient lawn and garden watering? Increased use at peak periods compromises City of Campbell River firefighting ability and increases operating and capital costs. For more information on water-wise lawn and garden care, visit the City of Campbell River website (www.campbellriver) or call or e-mail the water hotline: 250-203-2316, water.wise@ campbellriver.ca. When you invest in an RRSP the amount is deducted from your taxable income. That means you’ll pay less tax plus plus you pay no tax on the earnings inside the RRSP. Reinvest your tax refund and your retirement savings could enable you to retire Peter Garat when and how you want to. Certified Financial Planner The earlier you start, the longer your RRSP has to compound on a tax-free basis. Of course, it’s never too late to start. Starting later just means you’ll have to put away more each year to have enough to maintain your standard of living during retirement. It has been estimated that if you start in your 20’s you’ll need to put away about 6% of your gross income. If you start in your 30’s you’ll need to put away between 8% and 10%; in your 40’s you’ll need to put away between 14% and 20%. So the sooner you start the better.

It’s not fun anticipating lack of bladder control when you feel a sneeze or cough about to happen. Bladder control difficulties are especially common in adults over the age of 60 years, with women Dean Clark, Physiotherapist being twice as likely as men to experience incontinence. Your bladder organ is similar to a balloon supported in a “hammock” of muscles. One of the main causes of urinary incontinence is how gravity stretches these muscles over time, therefore having less effective holding capacity. Your Physiotherapist can help you with specific exercises to regain control of your urinary function so you can laugh loud, long and more often.

You want to try to find out what happened and how many people may be injured. Identify yourself and get permission Jennifer Comeau to help. If the injured person is not Branch Manager responding, call for medical help immediately. Make sure the airway is open and give CPR if the person is unconscious with no signs of life. You want to check for shock and severe bleeding and give first aid if needed. While you wait for medical help to arrive, reassure the casualty that help is on the way. Scooting is what we call it when a dog drags their bum along the ground. If a dog has an irritated back end, scooting is the only way they can scratch back there (aside from licking of course). If you see your dog scooting, it simply means that their back end is probably irritated. The roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms most common on Vancouver Island live almost exclusively in the small intestine, Dr. Kevin Penner laying microscopic eggs which then pass through Veterinarian the large intestine and out into the world. In all but the most severe infestations these worms cause no symptoms in the dog, although some of them can cause major problems when passed to people. If you travel to the Southern USA your dog may encounter whipworms which live in the large intestine. Whipworms have long tails which can sometimes cause irritation and scooting. Around here it is far more likely that your dog has impacted anal glands.Anal glands are scent glands located just inside the anus. They emit a pungent smelling secretion onto the faeces. These glands are most likely the reason dogs are always so interested in each others back ends. These glands can get impactions, infections, or even tumors resulting in great discomfort and of course, scooting. If you notice excessive scooting, your dog should be examined to check for these anal gland problems. Full Service Hospital, Dog Grooming & Boarding Kennel

What fish can I have in my pond? This is determined by the size of the pond. A general rule of thumb is: allowing 1” of fish for every 13 gallons of water.... yes this does seem like a large amount of water per small fish but they grow, and grow quickly! So, a small barrel pond with 3-4 fish is the maximum when you consider growth and waste output. A filter or method of keeping the water moving and clean is essential. Keep in mind that the average Sarah Kirk “pond comet” can grow to 12 inches long Owner and live for 20+ years. With little barrel ponds another really good fish is the Rosy Red Minnow. It’s great for mosquito control and it’s a fish that doesn’t get large, nor need a large body of water. When considering Koi for your pond, remember that they are more specialized in their requirements than pond comets. Koi can live up to 75 years and become 2-3 feet in length. A rule of thumb for Koi is that the pond be large,VERY large and at least 4 feet deep. Excellent filtration is also a must with Koi. Clean water, good water movement and a big pond? Then Koi are the fish for you. They become very “pet like” will recognize their keepers and respond to you at the pond. Laguna Citrus Koi Treats are a great way to get your Koi even more interested in befriending you! Next time: How do you feed your fish?

Why the heat? The first thing you will notice about any Bikram Yoga studio is that it is hot. While the heat may be intimidating at first for some, the benefits make the challenge worthwhile. There are many reasons for the heat, including: A greatly reduced risk of injury. The ability to work at a depth in Mimosa Palmberg, the body not otherwise accessible Yoga Instructor in such a short time. One can move beyond muscles to tendons and ligaments, and further to the internal organs. The benefits of a detoxifying sweat through the entire skin. The added challenge of the heat will help to push beyond the strength of the body to the strength of the mind. Additional benefits include: Weight loss / increased metabolism Clear and glowing skin Increased ability to tolerate heat outdoors

For Campbell River it is important to have skin creams with lots of humectants and antioxidants to compensate for a very windy environment in the winter plus strong sun in the summer. Humectants are very expensive: they attract and retain moisture in our skin and cannot be acquired from natural sources (eg. Maria S. Lee, B.Sc. Hons. Hyaluronic acid). Babies have a lot of humectants in their skin but loose them slowly as they age. As we get older and get more wrinkles it is beneficial to use slow and fast acting hydroxy acids which will smooth out the wrinkles superficially. Ethocyn, coenzyme Q10 and specific antioxidants will improve skin elasticity and sagging that old age brings. The ultimate anti-aging system has been developed by geneticists and it addresses the aging of the genes in our skin. A group of antioxidants which rejuvenate skin genes has been identified and led to creation of the AgeLoc skin care system which stops aging of the skin at its source. AgeLoc improves 8 signs of aging skin! Let me help you choose the most effective system for your budget!

My doctor says I don’t need progesterone because I don’t have a uterus. Why are you recommending progesterone? Bioidentical progesterone is very helpful clinically balancing the pro- Dr. Ingrid Pincott ND inflammatory effects of Naturopathic Physician estrogens in the body. When this is given along with, or in many cases instead of, estrogen women feel much better. “Progestins” are synthetic forms of progesterone and these are what are typically prescribed. However they do not have the same benefits as “progesterone” and, in fact, can have serious side effects. Naturopathic physicians are well trained in the use of bio-identical hormone.

Underwriting is the process an insurance company uses to select applicants it is willing to insure and determine the cost of providing coverage. There are common factors that insurance companies may use to decide how much to charge you for Darlene Garat the kind and amount of coverage you Financial Advisor want to buy. The insurance company receives this information from your application, and may ask you to fill out a health questionnaire or have a health examination or certain medical tests. In addition, the company may request that you consent to a Medical Information Bureau (MIB) report. There are varying levels of underwriting including full, simplified and “guaranteed issue”. Each type impacts the premium rates to be charged. If insurance is not fully underwritten at time of application, it may be underwritten at time of claim and your claim could be denied.

An e-mail, or a window pops up from what appears to be a government agency, an internet service provider, or a valid bank or credit card company. You’ll be asked to “verify” or “update” your information (name, password, account numbers) on the company’s Web Don Andrews & Dave Shook site. The e-mail may even say that the company has suspected some fraudulent activity on your account, and it needs to verify that you are whom you claim to be... they are fishing for your personal information. On Board Diagnostics, that little warning-lamp-dance your car does when you start it, has been industry mandated on all cars and light trucks since 1996. It’s job is to monitor dozens of vehicle systems such as fuel, emissions, electrical safety and convenience, engine and transmission control, Jeff Bergner even some heating and A/C Parts and Service Advisor functions. The warning lamp commonly called the ‘check engine light’ stays on when OBD has recorded a fault. OBD can’t diagnose the cause of a fault, it can only report the effect. Diagnosis is the job of factory trained technicians using dedicated interactive computers to read and command OBD.Your detailed report of the circumstances present when the light came on will help them re-create the ‘scene of the crime’. Aftermarket OBD readers can read only and don’t allow command, therefore diagnosis of check engine light concerns should only be handled by your specific dealership.

And in keeping with Clark’s fondness for populist, headlinehunting gestures, the government will also likely rebate the HST on bicycles and bicycle helmets, and possibly fitness club memberships as well. A couple of other “family-first” exemptions may also be gleaned from the town halls, online surveys and polling that are currently going on. A well-known polling firm was in the field last week, asking not only about people’s impressions of their new premier and opposition leader, but also their view towards a reduction in the HST rate. Win or lose the mail-in referendum on the tax in June or July, the B.C. Liberals are getting ready for a fall general election. Falcon estimates that cutting one point from the HST would cost the provincial treasury $850 million. Given that revenue from the HST is running well ahead of the finance ministry’s estimates, that figure could be low. The government’s independent panel issued its report last week, and it confirms that the HST is bringing in more revenue than expected. Going back to the PST would not only trigger huge costs of paying back federal transition

Our View

We are Canada’s water gluttons After one of the coolest and wettest winters on record, it seems pointless to talk about water conservation. Why save water when massive snow and ice packs cover the local mountains, thereby guaranteeing a We say: Expect seemingly endless supply of H20? No doubt, that is the philosophy of more bans, cost Campbell River’s citizens who have increases and few qualms about running the tap to their hearts’ content. We are among even meters the biggest consumers in the entire country. According to Environment Canada, in 2004, the average Canadian daily domestic use of fresh water

per capita was 329 litres. By contrast, in Campbell River last year, the average consumption for residential households was 496 litres per day. That’s an obscene disparity and it’s unlikely to change without drastic measures. To further complicate our insatiable desire to have the greenest lawns and most colourful gardens, water line breaks are slowly eroding the municipal budget to manage our water supply. In our mild climate we get off pretty easy compared to the rest of the country where freezing temperatures cause countless line breaks. Here in Campbell River, the city expects no more than 28 breaks a year; last year there were 81 breaks in

service, an indication of our aging infrastructure that needs replacing. Replacing water lines is expensive and to further complicate the situation, ratepayers are billed approximately 36 cents a cubic metre, whereas it costs the city 59 cents to deliver that same cubic metre to your tap. So, not only do we use the most water, but we are also under-billed for it and the costs will grow exponentially as the infrastructure ages. What we can expect in the next few years are cost increases, the implementation of water meters and lengthier bans and restrictions on outdoor water use. It’s time to turn down the tap.

Good point: Friendly! I recently had the privilege of visiting beautiful Campbell River. Even though it was only one day and one night, I got the feeling of being in one of the friendliest places on earth. From meeting a few teenagers at a cafe to chatting with senior ladies at the Quilters Guild art opening at the Tidemark Theatre, and even some of the pub patrons late night, everyone had great big smiles on their faces and made me feel so welcome. The upgrades to the downtown are fantastic and I am sure more are yet to come. Campbell River was a surprise that I am glad I got to experience and I look forward to my return to your lovely city. Thanks to everyone that made me feel at home. Terry Costa, Vancouver

Singing praises for opera tickets I would like to send a great big thank you to Kim Patrick-Hoff and Island Fever Travel for holding a draw at the end of the opera season. The prize was two tickets to see La Traviata at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver and an overnight hotel stay. I feel a second thank you should go to Steve McCune at the Caprice Theatre complex for having brought the Metropolitan Opera Live series to us here in Campbell River for the past two years. Freddie Goodship

I’m not taking the bait, again, on Ultimate contest

Paul Rudan No, Really

Forgive me, I did not vote. I know, I know, a reporter who doesn’t vote isn’t much of a reporter at all. But don’t write me off just yet. I DID vote in last week’s federal election, but I have dutifully declined to enter a ballot in another recent race. If you haven’t heard, Campbell River boosters are on the bandwagon trying to get the city named as the “Ultimate Fishing Town Canada.” And they’re particularly hungry to try and catch this year’s grand prize of $25,000 to be put towards fish enhancement projects. That seems worthy, but I’m not taking the bait. This so-called race is actually a

clever marketing tool created by the World Fishing Network. I’ve never seen a single fishing episode on WFN, but I assume it does exist. I do know they have a nice website. This I know because I wrote several stories last year on the Ultimate Fishing Town contest. Heck, I even voted online for Campbell River. But we were trounced and didn’t even make the final cut. To add to the indignity, Port Alberni won the grand prize and the gloating rights as well. Those dang Albernites! I can imagine them hanging out and laughing by their ramshackle wooden “Salmon Capital of the World” sign as they

carve another notch in the post as if they were gutting the other so-called “Salmon Capital of the World.” That would be us, of course, the once-proud Salmon Capital of the World. These days it is perhaps more appropriate to call Campbell River the “Fish Farming Capital of the World.” Somehow, it just doesn’t have the same ring. It’s kind of like calling Nosewipe, Manitoba, “Pig Farming Capital of the World.” Anyhow, with the shame of Port Alberni’s victory hanging over us like a bad pulp mill smell, local fishing boosters are doing their all to prop up the city’s angling image. So far, they’ve done pretty good.

Yesterday was the first round of cuts and Campbell River survived for round two (we were sitting in fifth with two Ontario towns leading the way followed by Port Hardy and Port Renfrew). But I’m still not voting. A vote for Campbell River is really a vote for the World Fishing Network and its website. The more hits it receives, the more money they can presumably charge their advertisers. As for the “big prize,” 25 grand is relative peanuts if you’re attracting media attention across the nation. In other words, I’m not biting. paulr@campbellrivermirror.com

Mining more responsibly in B.C. BEN CHALMERS MINING ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

During the celebration of BC Mining Week last year, a great deal was being made of the potential for a renaissance in mining with growth not seen in a generation. This year’s Mining Week celebration is focused on the fact that the renaissance has arrived. Almost every mine and smelter currently operating in B.C. is making major investments in modernization and expansion. Four new mines are in construction, several more are in advanced permitting and mineral exploration spending is rising. Billions of new investment dollars are flowing into B.C. and northern Vancouver Island is well positioned to reap the benefits. These benefits will include high paid, high skilled local jobs that will keep those workers currently commuting regularly from northern Vancouver Island to places like Fort McMurray and the Yukon at home with their families. Increased revenues

in supplying the 170 tonnes of steel making coal necessary to build each modern windmill for clean electricity generation. The copper from Myra Falls can be used by the automotive industry to supply the extra 40 pounds of copper necessary to build a hybrid car. The coal from Quinsam is a critical component in manufacturing the cement used for construction all across our province. In addition, the products that are produced at each of these mines are produced with lower greenhouse gas emissions because their proximity to ocean transport means few emissions related to transportation. As investment in new and expanding mines increases over the next few years, we have a golden opportunity to focus on finding better ways to dig the minerals out of the ground that are critical for our clean and green economy. For example, the Mining Association of BC (MABC) has become the first provincial mining association to adopt and implement the Towards Sustainable

to the province will help support important infrastructure projects like the new hospitals currently being planned for Campbell River and Courtenay. Countless local businesses that provide support to local mines also stand to benefit from new and expanded mines. Local businesses such as engineers and surveyors, environmental consultants, equipment dealers and service centres, charter buses, and even catering companies all stand to benefit from new mining investments currently taking place in all regions of B.C., including Vancouver Island. Both Myra Falls Operations and Quinsam Coal are working diligently to extend their mine lives and the Raven Coal project continues to proceed through its federal and provincial environmental assessments to begin producing high quality steel making coal. The products mined on Vancouver Island are critical to today’s clean and green economy. The steelmaking coal from the Raven project can play an important role

Mining initiative (TSM). TSM is an initiative developed by the Mining Association of Canada to encourage continuous improvement at mines and to provide a transparent means for mines to report to the public on the progress they are making on issues that are important to local communities. The TSM initiative requires mines to report on a series of indicators developed to address areas of specific concern for the mining sector and the public including energy and greenhouse gas management, crisis planning, tailings management, aboriginal and community engagement, biodiversity and safety and health. Mines that report on TSM indicators do so annually but are required to have their results independently verified every three years. This verification provides of the public with confidence in the reported results. One of the most important aspects of TSM is that it was developed with the input and guidance of an external communities of interest advisory panel.

A13

This panel includes representation from labour, Aboriginal organizations and communities, NGOs, mining communities and the investment sector and meets twice a year to work with the mining industry to improve performance, foster open dialogue and identify issues of importance related to mining. TSM is not new to mining on Vancouver Island. It is currently being employed at Myra Falls Operations as they are members of the Mining Association of Canada. It is also currently being employed at other mines across the province such as Teck Resources’ operations at Highland Valley Copper, in the Elk Valley and at Trail. However, many of the B.C. mines are not members of MAC and bringing TSM to the Mining Association of BC will allow all of our province’s active mines to benefit from this initiative. TSM is a natural next step as the industry continues its efforts to mine responsibly and provide the metals and minerals that are essential for our daily lives.

‘Gorge-ous’ win for the Gunners The U15 Gunners of Campbell River defeated The Gorge of Victoria to win the Vancouver Island Cup in the 47 th Annual Tournament of Champions, on Saturday. The game was held at Beckwith Park at 3:20 p.m. on an overcast, 15 degree C Saturday afternoon. This is the third time in the last year that the Gunners have met The Gorge in outdoor play. Last year, they met at

the Island play-offs for the Provincial Cup, as well as at the Island Cup final. On both occasions, the Gorge won, 1-0 and 2-0. The game itself was hard fought. After several chances in the first half by both sides, it was the goalkeepers for both teams who kept the score even at 0-0. The second half also saw rigorous play with spectacular saves by the Gunners’ keeper Collin Massie and the

Gorge’s keeper Sean Speirs. On one occasion, Massie lunged and caught a perfectly executed header destined for the top right corner. On another play, Speirs saved a beautifully-struck free kick by Evan Farmer. The draw at fulltime required penalty kicks to find a result. Both teams submitted five players, and the Gorge kicked first. The Gorge scored, and then Gunner Alexan-

dre Desrochers scored. Their second player’s shot was saved by Collin Massie, and Gunner Jason Fawkes hit the goal post. Gorges’ third player scored, as did Gunner Kevin Shelswell. The Gorge’s fourth shot was saved by Massie, and Gunner Tyler Kelly hit the goal post. Gorge’s fifth player scored, as did Gunner’s Alex Foge. Because the round of five players ended in a draw, the game contin-

ued into sudden death penalty kicks. The Gorge’s first player scored, as did Gunner Zach Tillapaugh. However, the Gorge’s second player’s shot cleared the cross-bar, leaving Gunner Aidan Anderson to finish. When his shot hit the back of the net, the Gunners and their parents exploded in frenzy: the Gunners of Campbell River had captured the Island Cup championship.

MINING WEEK 2011 Supporting Campbell River & The Comox Valley

C.R Skating Club

Reclamation

Mining is an industry that most people don’t think about on a daily basis, yet it is an industry that provides the essential resources required to produce countless products which we rely on to sustain us on a daily basis – items such as computers, automobiles, cement, entertainment products, vitamins, sunscreen and medical ointments, turbine engines, surgical instruments, and sports equipment. During Mining Week, May 8 – 14, we have the opportunity to focus on the benefits of mining right here in Campbell River and the Comox Valley. Hillsborough’s Quinsam Coal mine and NVI Mining’s Myra Falls zinc and copper mines provide nearly 500 direct and 1500 indirect jobs in our area. These employees and their families are major participants in the numerous clubs and organizations that make our community such a great place to live. Through payroll and purchasing, the mines inject over $125 million into our local and regional economy. Many community agencies, some of which are shown here, are supported by the mines and employees as well. The mining industry in British Columbia is governed by legislation that is considered among the highest quality in the world. Through internal practices and following the legislation, our local mines provide safe and environmentally responsible work environments. The employees of the Myra Falls and Quinsam Coal mining operations are proud to call Campbell River and the Comox Valley home. Together, and with the support of like-minded businesses, we are pleased to be a part of our communities. On behalf of all the employees at Quinsam Coal and Myra Falls, join us in celebrating Mining Week 2011. We look forward to a long and prosperous future for ALL OF US!
