SPIRIT CENTRE Spirit Square is an outdoor facility in Campbell River’s town centre, providing a wide open space for almost any kind of public gathering. Spirit Square does its best to represent Campbell River’s social diversity by providing a program of entertainment and public awareness events, and invites local orga-
nizations to use the Square to promote their own individual causes. During the summer months, a regular schedule of musical and cultural performances are held. The River Concert Series begins every Thursday at 7 p.m. Bring your kids! Bring a lawn chair to rest between songs. Hot coffees available on site.
GOLFING GETAWAY Top-quality, challenging courses are located only minutes’ drive away. Sequoia Springs on Petersen Road’s Par72 offers the recreational and serious player a pleasing experience. The course is often referred to as the “Garden Course” with its numerous gardens and a wide variety of Sequoia and deciduous trees. The clubhouse offers meeting
rooms, an ideal wedding facility and a unique 19th century wedding chapel amidst a flower garden. Storey Creek on McGimpsey Road south of town offers a Championship course (reservations are recommended). Farther south, there is Saratoga Beach and just north of Courtenay, Mulligans offers a nice easy ninehole course.

GREAT THINGS TO DO IN THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA / May 2011
SALMON CAPITAL OF THE WORLD If there’s one thing that Campbell River is known for it’s that salmon fishing is king here. For over 100 years, this area has catered to the sports angler. Whether you prefer to row for the mighty Tyee (a chinook salmon over 30 pounds), troll for coho or outwit steelhead with a fly, fishing in Campbell River is the prime activity. World class sports fishing has been a hallmark of the Campbell River area since Sir Richard Musgrave extolled its virtues to a fascinated audience back in England over 100 years ago. Once word got out, people flocked to this far western outpost of the Empire. The travel time is less now, but the excitement of salmon fishing in the Campbell River area is no less diminished. There are many ways to hook
the big one. Bring your own boat and head out on local waters. Local hotels, lodges and resorts have their own guides or can recommend you to the “hot hands.” If tradition and a challenge is your thing, then you need to seek out the Tyee Club housed in a little cabin perched on the rocky shoreline of the Tyee Spit. Its reputation is known around the world by serious salmon anglers. The club abides by strict rules – no more than 20 lb test line, a single barbless lure must be used, and fish are caught from rowboats – and awards an annual prize, Tyee Man (or Woman), for the biggest catch. Another alternative is to fish the Discovery Pier located beside the government docks downtown. Rods are available for hire and the ice cream is legendary.

Judging by the number of kayaks strapped to the top of vehicles or towed behind them on trailers, the word is out that the Campbell River area is a spectacular paddling destination. From evening sunset paddles that top off a spectacular day to long distance water treks, kayaking in this region is second to none. Local waters around town are somewhat tricky because of the strong tidal currents. It is best to make use of local knowledge if you’re not an expert paddler. But other destinations are accessible from Quadra and Cortes Islands or from the south end of Campbell River. Explore the northern Gulf of Georgia and Discovery Islands. There are also many freshwater destinations where a kayak is just as at home as a canoe. Canoeing is king on the popular Sayward Forest Canoe Route just north of town.
Saltwater routes involve places like the Breton Islands, a small group of islands located off the east side of Quadra Island, which is accessible via ferry from downtown Campbell River. Get to the Bretons by launching your kayak from Heriot Bay on Quadra Island or, if you want to avoid boat traffic, Rebecca Spit Provincial Park. From Heriot Bay it’s approximately a 3 km paddle. Another famous destination is Desolation Sound, the gateway to stunningly blue waters, magnificent snow-capped peaks of the Coastal Mountains, and breath-taking inlets where waterfalls cascade hundreds of feet down steep cliffs and into the sea. During your paddle you might encounter dolphins, seals, sea lions and – if you’re fortunate – killer whales. And you’re almost guaranteed to see eagles feeding on herring and other small fish.

GREAT THINGS TO DO IN THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA / May 2011 13
WILDLIFE The adventure of a lifetime is just a boat ride away in Campbell River. Jump aboard a high-speed Zodiac or settle back in a comfy cruiser as you head through the “boiling” waters of Seymour Narrows and Surge Narrows during a fast tide as your vessel is buffeted by huge whirlpools. Remember to take a look up into the towering evergreen trees where bald eagles lie in wait for the small fish that get caught in the whirlpools and bubble up to the surface. That’s when the eagles swoop down for an easy-to-catch treat. But the eagles aren’t the only creatures feeding. Sealions, seals, killer, grey and humpback whales, and dolphins also fatten up on the “lower members of the food chain.” And keep a close watch on the beach where black bears enjoy dining on barnacles and other seafood treats. If you cruise over to the mainland inlets, there’s also great opportunities to see grizzly bears and their cubs feeding on sedge grasses along the estuaries. Adventure tour cruises are offered through local hotels or visit Discovery Harbour Marina (behind the shopping mall) where you can book trips with local guiding companies.

HIT THE TRAILS If lacing up a sturdy pair of hiking boots is your idea of a dynamic vacation activity, then the Campbell River area is going to be one of your favourite destinations. Whether you’re in the mood for a seaside stroll or a high-mountain ramble, you can find your pace here. Ripple Rock Trail This popular four-hour hike is reached by driving north from Campbell River on Highway 19 about 20 minutes. A sign on the right side of the road indicates the parking area. The trail heads down to Menzies Creek close to sea level then climbs the headland making the entrance to Menzies Bay. The reward for this trail is big as the terminus is a high cliff overlooking the famous Ripple Rock in the middle of Seymour Narrows. Elk Falls Trail One of the most scenic and captivating hikes in the Campbell River area is the Elk Falls Trail. It's actually a series of looping trails that pass the famous falls. Set off west of town on Highway 28 towards Gold River. At the top of "General Hill," turn right onto the Loveland Bay Road. The trail wanders along the Campbell River, providing viewpoints of the river course and Elk Falls themselves. Easy and enjoyable.

HIKING Strathcona Park
British Columbia’s oldest provincial park is a hiking mecca. The spectacular wilderness straddles Vancouver Island’s central mountain core and the hiking trails find their way into the alpine scenery. It’s not all blood and guts slogging up to the mountains, though. There are also beautiful but short g and sweet trails that take as little as 20 minutes.

A DIFFERENT PACE You don’t have to go far to escape to another world, where life is quiet and the pace is slow. All you have to do is cross the Discovery Passage to Quadra Islands. Quadra Island is a destination in itself that features great dining facilities, bed-and-breakfasts, shopping and access to some of the most peaceful, beautiful beaches, parks and lakes in the region. Quadra Island is also a kayaking, fishing and camping mecca. Here are some Quadra Island highlights: Village Bay Lakes Some of the nicest beaches are inland on Quadra Island. Main Lake, Village Bay Lake and Mine Lake are located in the north central part of the island and are connected by narrow waterways. They
are well-worth exploring, featuring sandy beaches, small islands and hardly any other people to spoil the view. Canoes and kayaks can be launched at Village Bay or on Mine Lake off Surge Narrows Road. Rebecca Spit One of the natural highlights of Quadra Island is Rebecca Spit near Heriot Bay. The spit is surrounded by sandy beaches which are pleasant to explore and the provincial marine park is a great place for a day trip or picnic. There is no provincial campground and camping is not permitted on the spit, but the Cape Mudge Indian Band operates a popular private campground at the park’s southern end. Cape Mudge lighthouse and petroglyphs Access the historic Cape Mudge
WHALE WATCHING
Lighthouse via the luxurious TsaKwa-Luten Lodge (pictured at left). Have lunch and then stroll to the lighthouse following easy trails. Continue on to the petroglyphs on the beach. Petroglyphs are believed to be ceremonial works of art pecked into stone. The Cape Mudge petroglyphs are found on the larger rocks right on the end of Francisco Point on Wei Wai Kai Beach. Access them from the lighthouse trail. Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre This cultural facility at Cape Mudge Village houses a world class collection of First Nations potlatch treasures and regalia of the Kwa’ Kwa’ Ka’ Wa’Kw People. Your visit will provide insight into the beliefs and practices of this proud culture.

LOGGER SPORTS Campbell River’s Logger Sports event (our heritage sport) depicts the past and present logging practices through entertaining competitions between loggers and is presently the largest in Canada. This year’s show runs August 6-8 and will offer two World Championship and seven Canadian Championships, along with other open, intermediate, novice, ladies youth and teen events. International and local loggers will be competing for part of the proposed $32,855 prize package and maybe set a Canadian or World record. For the fourth time, our Logger Sports Competition has been selected to be filmed for TSN and will be aired on their 2011 and 2012 Lumberjack Series.
CARVING FESTIVAL The Transformations On The Shore carving festival attracts carvers from all over the world to Frank James Park in Willow Point from June 29-July 3 to turn logs into art. This annual event brings novice, amateur, semi-professional, and professional carvers to the shoreline of Campbell River for five days during the last week in June to transform cedar and/or fir carving logs into works of art. About 30 carvers shape their logs using chainsaws, mauls, knives, chisels and various custom tools until a new creation is released from the heart of the wood. The finished sculptures are later displayed in various parks and sponsors’ premises for everyone to enjoy year round.

MOUNTAIN BIKING Campbell River is excellent single track terrain. From moderate to expert, there are kilometres galore to get your tires muddy. Trails wind through rain forests providing not only challenging riding but also scenic beauty – if you can take your eyes off the trail, that is. The Beaver Lodge Lands is a great place to start, featuring easy and advanced trails. The urban forest, located right in the middle of town, can be accessed at the intersection of Hilchey Road and Dogwood Street (park on Hilchey), at two parking lots along South McPhedran Road, or by parking at the west end of Merecroft/Trask Road. More challenging trails exist northwest of town in the Snowden Demonstration Forest which can be accessed from Highway 28. This is intermediate to expert riding. A real challenge exists at McIvor Lake where there are a number of free-riding features.
