These days, vinyl siding is the largest market segment in the flexible cladding industry. It is an inexpensive material. However, care should be taken when choosing this type of siding as the price can fluctuate depending on quality and thickness. Vinyl is particularly interesting because of its long life span, lasting up to forty years. It also offers good resistance to shocks and scratching. Even though it is sometimes sensitive to wind, to temperature changes and to the impact of winter, vinyl siding can also be designed to fit together in order to be more solid regardless of the weather. In this way it adapts well to temperature changes and is weather resistant. The life span of the siding can be extended by choosing a good quality vinyl and ensuring that it is well installed. As installation is reasonably easy, a good handyman will be able to do the work himself. However, the manufacturer’s installation instructions must be followed closely in order to avoid buckling. Vinyl siding is available in a wide range of colours and styles. Some models mimic traditional planks, cedar shingles, bricks or stone. It is advisable not to choose a dark colour as vinyl tends to fade when exposed to the sun. An insulated vinyl is now available on the market. Depending on the style of the product and the brand, the insulation value can vary from R 3.0 to 4.0. Insulated siding is thicker than traditional vinyl sidings.

How to transform long, boring hallways A long, dark hallway leading to some bedrooms and a bathroom… many homes have them. They are a vestige from the 1960’s and 70’s and, in the decades since, have been a real headache to redecorate. Here are a few tips to help you reduce that long, boring look.
by arranging family photographs, paintings or murals on the walls. Paint one of the end walls a dark colour or use warm colours such as reds or oranges, for example. Use wallpaper, also on an end wall, with a bold or large scale design, or use wallpaper with wide horizontal stripes.
Transforming a corridor into an interesting and agreeable part of the home is not particularly difficult. By learning some simple principles of interior design you can discover how to manipulate the space to add volume in this high-traffic area.
Lighting is also an important element in creating the desired effect. Add lamps at short distances along the hallway to give a soft, yellow lighting. For a more dramatic effect create a low shelf, near the base of the wall, on which lights can be positioned projecting upwards to cut the space, creating intense pools of light right along the passageway.
To diminish the effect of length, architectural elements can be added such as shelves or narrow tables on which dried flower arrangements or photographs can be positioned. If you have enough space you could even add bookshelves. Another option is to give your hallway a picture gallery look

For a beautiful staircase... A staircase is an important and often beautiful architectural element and should always blend in with the rest of the house in both style and colour scheme. With this in mind, it can be a difficult place to decorate effectively. Yet there are numerous ways of highlighting this central component of a house, which is often the first thing people see when they walk through your front door. However, there are three basic rules which should be followed: simplicity, lighting and a hint of colour. To highlight a staircase, decorate it simply and avoid using contrasting elements.
Simplicity Keep your staircase simple! It’s much better to restrain yourself to a few decorative elements placed at regular intervals up the stairs. Plants positioned between the balusters are a good idea but perhaps artificial plants would be preferable to natural ones due to the risk of water-stains. A wool stair runner is always quieter and more comfortable on the feet. If the staircase has a landing in the middle, create a point of interest; the rounded curves of a long-necked African vase will generate great visual impact. Lighting The staircase is visible during the day but often disappears when night falls. To emphasize its beauty during the evening, subtle garlands of light can be used to decorate the stair rail and create an intimate atmosphere. Candles could also be used on every other step or choose wall lights. This type of lighting creates a dramatic effect when installed at the base of the wall, all the way up the stairs. A hint of colour Whether the stairs are in wood, metal, stone or concrete, the colour of the walls must be in perfect harmony with the rest of the house. Neutral shades are ideal for creating a feeling of equilibrium.

DECORATING NEEDS TO BE PLANNED Before you throw yourself into the decoration of the interior of your home, take the time to plan the work. It’s better to plan everything beforehand rather than making mistakes which will be difficult or costly to repair. Start by deciding on the extent of the work. Examine the state of each room and check if your needs have changed. For example, if your children have grown up, it’s perhaps time to rethink their bedrooms. Choose floor coverings which are appropriate for the use of the room and that fit in the surroundings. Paint is an easy and fast way of changing or refreshing a room. Avoid colours which are too dark and difficult to paint over. Choose a shade from your bedding or wallpaper or that harmonizes with your furniture. Applying the principles of Feng Shui will generate the optimum circulation of positive energy in the house. This approach also guides you in the use of colours and advises against some combinations, such as yellow and green, which can induce a feeling of discomfort unless the green is less dominant than the yellow. According to this approach, the position of the colours is also very important. It’s recommended to put colder shades below and warmer shades above. For example, greens below and blues above.
