The choice of plants determines the character of the water garden.

Adding a pond is an ideal way of bestowing life and beauty to a landscape design. These days, preformed ponds are available which can be easily integrated into an existing garden. However, once it has been installed the pond must be embellished to lend it charm and beauty. And how it is embellished will determine the character of the pond: classic, bog, rustic, swamp, etc. Traditional garden ponds are usually enhanced with a variety of well-known aquatic plants. When the edges of a pond stay fairly cool, plants suitable for acidic soils can be used to create a bog garden. Or why not play with contrasts by creating delicate-looking borders filled with heathers and backed by country-style plants such as mountain laurels or hardy rhododendrons. Adding ferns, which adapt well to either town or country settings, will help to give an airy look to any garden. To establish a swamp garden use different types of wetland plants around the edges of the pond. A water garden is made up of many different types of plants: some grow completely submerged; others mainly under the water, but sending leaves up to the surface; others keep only their roots below the waterline; a few pond plants do not need soil and instead float on the water surface. Invasive plants should be avoided on the pond’s edges as well as in the water.
