Father Charles Brandt recently captured these buffleheads – small diving ducks commonly seen in surrounding bays and estuaries along our coast in the fall and winter months. “Usually seen in small groups of between eight and 15,” says nature lover Brandt. “It has a high-domed forehead with a grey bill. The female is grayish in colour with a white cheek patch.” To submit your photos for MidWeek send them to kristend@campbellrivermirror.com Midweek is published every Wednesday at: 104-250 Dogwood Street Campbell River, BC V9W 2X9 To reach us: North Island 250-949-6225 Campbell River 250-287-9227 • Comox Valley 250-338-5811 e-mail – kristend@campbellrivermirror.com Website – northislandmidweek.com

Penny auctions may leave you feeling pound foolish For the last few the idea that you can, years the online for instance, buy a auction business has brand-new, still in been dominated by the box, high-tec big name players, most $800 computer for as noticeably EBay. little as $9.95. Sounds It was fabulous – a inevitable new computer that sooner or for next to later someone nothing and would step in a dramatic and try to push saving of them aside – around $790 and that push – how cool is Tony has begun that? It’s like Duke in earnest something for Antique Expert with the nothing - ‘sign introduction of me up!’ I hear penny auctions. you shout. Well wait Although the my friend and we shall new style auctions see. each have their own The penny auctions individual names these are, for the most part, sites are generically operating legal and dubbed penny auctions legitimate businesses because the bid operating quite openly. increments are set at However, and there a measly ‘penny’ per has to be at least one bid. You may even ‘however’; the savings have seen the glitzy ads you make may not on TV or in the press actually be savings at for such alternative all! ‘online auctions’ Unlike the more promising terrific traditional online bargains. auctions, penny The hype auctions have a couple surrounding penny of non-traditional auctions promotes terms and conditions.
Unlike a regular auction, be it online or a conventional ‘in house’ auction with penny auctions you have to actually pay up-front to be able to take part and place your bid; some even charge an additional membership fee before you can take part. At a conventional auction you place your bid on what you want; if you’re the highest bid - it’s yours, or to use the current term - you win! Simple, though at some auctions you may have to pay an additional ‘buyer’s premium’ of anywhere from 10 to 25 per cent. Once the premium of 25 per cent is added your ‘winning bid’ of say $100 the total owing would come to a hefty $125 – and don’t forget that there can be additional P.S.T. on top that. Many penny auctions charge a fee each time you place a bid and as the bidding increments are set at
a mere penny per bid you may have to place as many as 225 bids to win something which eventually sells for $5. To give an example, let’s say the item you really want is ‘listed’ at a ridiculously low start price of just 50 cents. How can you resist? After all it’s 50 cents plus a penny - what a deal! Or is it? To get from the start price of 50 cents to $5 we need there to be 450 bids at a penny per bid. So if there are two of you bidding you will need to place around 225
bids (depending upon who bid first). In the heat of the moment you have probably forgotten that win or lose for each bid placed it’s going to cost the bidder 60 cents. Remember, although you are bidding in penny increments you will have to actually pay the auction company 60 cents for each penny you bid - so if my math is correct, your 225 bids charged at said 60 cents per is going to set you back Cont. on Page 4

with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com The temperature is dropping and people who are into fly fishing are spending more time behind the vise filling those boxes for spring. I checked in with Rob Worrall at Tyee Marine in Courtenay. We discussed the fishing season and the word “awesome” described it best. Comox and Wolf lake are great spots to fish with the family, there is easy access to Maple lake w with some nice reports of fish being p caught off shore. Maplee will be my next lakee to take my float tubee and cast out a leech orr woolly bugger fly. This time of year, gett down with a sinking linee and hope for a strike. I visited Ship Wreckedd Bead Shop and learnedd that owner Leannee Reid has tied flies in the he Rob Worrall with a Prince George area and selection of fishing flies hasn’t touched the vise in years. Many anglers who tie flies these days are picking up feathers, beads flies that will catch ds and other odds and ends to create cr fissh. Hobby shops are full of useful beads, feathers and an glues to enhance your yo supply box. Local anglers in Campbell an River are fishing the Ri Hump and Cape Mudge. Hu Feeder springs are Fe feeding on herring and fe needlefish. ne hers feat When the weather is Wh ock peac with Leanne Reid good, try fishing the ebb tide, the water is clear and flashers are not needed. I had a chance to drive past St Jeans cannery depot in Campbell River and talked with a couple of American anglers who had a cooler of salmon ready to unload. Sports fishermen play a big role at the cannery, more than 10,000 anglers visit the business every year. When I heard Calgary had new snow, I phoned Dave Anderson who distributes thousandss of fishing flies acrosss western Canada. His topp selling flies are Muddlerr Minnow, Copper John andd beadhead flies. If you are new to the area,, we are setting up a coffeee night to talk fishing, sharee stories and learn from each other the art of fly American angler with salmon tying, and the exchange of ready for canning at feathers and ideas to make St. Jean’s Cannery & Smokehouse this sport fun for all.

$135 in bidding fees alone - and that’s on top of the $5 you owe for the item you ‘won’. So what you thought was a $5 bargain will actually cost you $140 plus applicable taxes and any shipping fees. Meanwhile, equally caught up in the bidding frenzy your competitor bidder (who goes away with absolutely nothing other than the pleasure of bidding) has placed 224 bids also costing 60 cents
per bid thereby giving the auction house an additional $134.40. Not quite the deal either of you were expecting, eh? Well while you await your ‘win’ to arrive the penny auction promptly collects $274.40. Not a bad profit for apparently very little effort eh? But wait - there’s more! To take part in many a penny auction you have to make an initial purchase of a ‘bidder’s package’ meaning that before you are awarded the
privilege of placing a single bid you must pay money ‘up front’ as well as supplying your credit and or banking information. Not only that, although each of the auctions has a time limit, every time a bid is placed the limit is extended by a further 10 or 20 seconds. This time extension is apparently done to keep it ‘fair for everybody who may want to bid at the last moment.’ However, in reality, the extension has the effect of
causing the bidders to become embroiled in a ‘bidding war’ thereby causing the punters (bidders) to throw caution to the wind and keep bidding; after all, ‘it’s just another penny.’ It’s not a bad world within which we live but there are cautions and precautions which we would all be wise to take. The phrase ‘buyer beware’ originated for a reason. As for taking part in any penny auctions do a little research beforehand to check the terms and

Operation Red Nose seeks volunteers COURTENAY — They spread cheer by helping those who may have overindulged, find a safe ride home, and the local branch of Operation Red Nose (ORN) is hoping for more volunteers this holiday season. “Last year we had 50 volunteers that helped provide safe rides for over 446 people in our first year of service ... (this year) we’re hoping for 80 or as many as 100, said Tricia Scavarda, ORN co-ordinator. “The more volunteers, the more rides.” During the official launch Thursday morning, Scavarda
said the program was created to encourage responsible behaviour around impaired driving by enabling communities to provide a free and confidential chauffeur service during the holiday season. Volunteer drivers along with a navigator will pick up riders and drive them home in their car, while an escort driver will follow in another vehicle. The service is free, added Scavarda, but patrons are encouraged to make a donation. “Our mission this year is to increase exposure to local businesses through their spirit of giving, and donations received will go towards funding

At contract’s end, customers have the choice of: (i) returning their vehicle through a Kia dealership with no further obligations (except payment of a $199 return fee and excess wear and tear, mileage and similar charges if exceeding 24,000 km per year allowance); (ii) financing the remaining balance for the rest of the amortization period at then-current standard rates; or (iii) paying the residual balance indicated on the bill of sale in full. Some conditions apply. FlexChoice Financing offered by TD in Quebec is subject to different terms and conditions. All advertised FlexChoice Financing offers are TD offers. Delivery and destination fees (up to $1,650) are included. Taxes, licence, insurance, registration, excess mileage, wear and tear charges, any retailer administration fees and other applicable fees and charges are not included. FlexChoice Financing is provided on approved credit through TD Financing Services. If you exercise your Return Value Option, a return fee of $199 must be paid by you (not applicable in the province of Quebec) and you will be responsible for excess kilometre charges, excess wear and tear, and any other amounts as specified in your Certificate. The remaining loan balance will be subject to then-applicable TD Financing Services rates and fees. Retailers may sell for less. See participating retailers for complete details. (JIBC) and the Ministry of Advanced Education,” BCAS Superintendent Lance Stephenson said Nov. 4 at the Old School. “By bringing primary care paramedic (PCP) training to the rural communities, BCAS and the JIBC are opening the door
to skill development and training while enabling staff to remain close to home,” he said. In order to maintain high quality service to Port McNeill, BCAS partnered with the JIBC and the Ministry of Advanced Education to make this training initiative possible. Paramedics... From Page 10 Town of Port McNeill, said Stephenson. “BCAS employs many emergency medical responders and PCPs in small communities, such as Port McNeill, who have demanding full and part time jobs, families and other community commitments,” he said. “It can be challenging for these employees to attend long courses where travel, accommodations and time away from family are often required.” Starting last week, 20 BCAS EMRs from the Northern Vancouver Island region — including Port McNeill, Port Hardy, Alert Bay,
Port Alice, Zeballos, Tahsis, Gold River and Sayward — took part in hands-on training to supplement the online training that’s already underway. The PCP training will take approximately nine months to complete. Throughout the duration of the course, the students will undergo training in the areas of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, airway management and general patient care. Once fully qualified, these PCPs will provide scene responses in the community of Port McNeill as part of BCAS’ commitment to high quality patient care across British Columbia.
