Funny things going on on the coast

MECHANICAL SPECIAL We will beat any mechanical quote! We offer a full range of mechanical services.

The Museum at Campbell River is delighted to host popular local author Jim Creighton on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 1:30-3 p.m. Creighton will be reading from his new book ‘eLkFaLLsbC: Comic Imaginations of a Coastal Town’. eLkFaLLsbC is Jim’s first humorous publication, a collection of twelve short stories about

the modern map, but something keeps holding them back. Jim Creighton is a writer of fiction, living in Campbell River. For a dozen years he’s flown float aircraft up and down the west coast, hauling loggers, fish farmers, politicians and natives, and meeting people in every nook and cranny. The cost for the talk is $5. Call 287-3103 to reserve a seat.

chi, dancing, boxing or aerobics for a challenging workout. Many programs will correct your technique, allow you to change your workout routine often to keep from getting bored, and track your progress to keep you motivated to keep going. One final way to help get motivated to get in shape is to find some like-minded individuals online. Instead of driving to a local support group, log in to online groups instead. Get recipes, exchange stories and inspiration with other members, log your daily calorie and exercise goals and record your progress all without leaving the comfort of your home. Some programs require a monthly membership fee, but other programs are free to join. Having the support of other people trying to achieve the same goals always makes it easier to keep going. Traditional exercise is still just as effective as it has always been. New technology just makes it a more manageable and fun! Divorce researcher seeks subjects Fishing Mike D’Amour Gazette Staff

A Montreal-based psychotherapist and family counsellor is looking for North Island input into her groundbreaking study on divorce and children. Vikki Stark is a researcher studying the effects of the moment of revelation for children when they learn their parents are divorcing. “I’m looking for participants in my study,” Starksaid. “Either adults who were kids or teens when their parents divorced, or current kids or teens who can participate with the consent or help of a parent.” Stark, the author of two books also based on large studies — My Sister, My Self and Runaway Husbands — said her current research could be vital because it could lead to providing parents

Vikki Stark is studying the effects on children of the moment when parents reveal their plans to divorce. in the future with the gold-standard in terms of how to tell the kids about the split. “The moment you hear your spouse wants to leave — even if you’ve been fighting and going to marriage

counseling or whatever — it’s a shock and a huge turning point,” she said. “Yet for kids whose whole family changes in the course of five minutes, we don’t really relate to the

level at which that moment of revelation has. For the rest of their lives they’re going to divide their childhood in half ... it becomes that watershed moment that divides their childhood.” Stark said she believes the current literature on the subject simply does not delve deep enough into that moment in a way it could be better understood. “There’s a lot in any book about children and divorce, there’s a few paragraphs about how to tell the kids, ‘Don’t do it like this, do it like that, say this, tell them it’s not their fault,’” she said.

“You know, all of the same platitudes are trotted out all the time; but the importance of this research is we’re actually going to hear the voices of people who were kids or teens when their parents were divorced and what struck them, what hurt them, what helped them, what was said that was important, what were their worries, and these will help parents shape how they’re going to make this presentation.” Anyone interested in participating in the research can do so online at: http:// SurveyMonkey.com/s/ ChildDivorceStudy

with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com This time of year, the cold weather gets some people off the local lakes. There are many anglers that combine fishing with other activities this time of year, regardless of the rain, cold and even snow. These activities can include hiking and gold panning Kris Salter spends a lot of time on the Oyster River and combines a road trip too various lakes and streams. Some loggingg roads are rough andd some lakes are hard too get to, like Mary Lake. On a recent trip too Gray Lake and Robertss Lake no fish weree seen surfacing. Usee a sinking line withh a nymph fly patternn and get down to thee Kris Salter bottom. Fishing off ff Campbell River shore with lures is the preferred method of fishing theses lakes On accessible lakes, you can fish off shore and hope for a trout to hit your lure or fly. Try fishing as many lakes you can for at la least le 20 minutes then move m on. Popular lakes in Campbell River are ar Gray, Roberts and Mohun. M In the Courtenay area, try a drive to Pearl Lake, but the road La may be rough and not ma lake Roberts easy for a normal road vehicle. This year I will try and venture out to Blue Grouse, Lost and Little Lost Lake along with Hell Diver where I will use my belly boat. Trout are catchable and the size ranges from 2 to 3 pounds. With the hair industry scooping up the feathered capes, the tackle shops in both Campbell River and Courtenay have a stock of packaged feathers in various colours. Rabbit fur material is gaining popularity among tiers, because of the colours available, and the action it has in the water. A popular fly to use for fishing the river is an egg sucking leech. If you are looking to purchase seafood for the Christmas season, you can contact Ray Philipow at Crabby Bob’s Seafood at 250-830-1155. Large or small orders of seafood can be ordered. Roy Williams has gotten a good response from people needing indoor and outdoor storage for boats, motor homes and cars. Weather permitting, my next road trip will be heading west to Gold River.

Energy conservation on Vanier’s curriculum Lindsay Chung Black Press COURTENAY — By the end of December, Georges P. Vanier Secondary School should be equipped with sensors that turn the lights off when there is no one around and when there is already enough light coming in through the windows. The school’s Environment Club recently received a $1,000 BC Hydro Conservation Award. School District 71 and the school administration team have matched the grant, and the club is putting the money back into the school to equip Vanier with occupancy sensors. Vanier’s Environment Club earned the BC Hydro award for its work conserving energy at the school through the Energy Ambassadors program. “We raise awareness for environmental and energy problems within the community and school,” explained Britaini Maslin, who is in Grade 11. It can be difficult to try to green up the school, pointed out eleventh-grader Rebecca LafleurMcDonnell. “It’s kind of hard to get teachers and students to be involved and support us all the time,” she said, noting people are very enthusiastic at first, but then the enthusiasm tails off. “It’s a commitment thing, and it’s sometimes even bad within our own group, where we get a few people show up.” “They always take the cheaper option, like styrofoam,” added Alicia Saunders, who is also in Grade 11. This year, Vanier’s Environment Club is trying to focus on sustainable living. They’ll hold a clothing swap in January, and they’re planning a composting project at the school. The Environment Club has worked on

conserving energy through the Energy Ambassadors program for the past two years after it was proposed by teacher-sponsor Maye Davis. Vanier participated in a workshop facilitated by BC Hydro and started finding ways to reduce energy use in the school. At the end of the year, the club made a presentation about its work to the school board. Cont. on Page 13

Environment Club performs energy audits and computer use survey From Page 11 “Ms. Davis was very good to keep us on task and on deadline, said Saunders. The Environment Club performed energy audits, and members surveyed which computers and lights were on after school hours. The Environment Club also started replacing lightbulbs in the hallways with more energy-efficient bulbs.

Last year, the club held an awareness day. Students decorated 200 sugar cookies to remind students to remind their teachers to turn their computers off. The club also bought filtered water fountains for the school so that students don’t have to buy water bottles. The BC Hydrosponsored Energy Ambassadors Program

educates students and the school community about the link between energy use and the need to conserve resources for the future and explores issues of sustainability, stewardship and the environment. Students participate in two workshops facilitated by BC Hydro, where they learn to develop and deliver behaviour change presentations

to encourage other students to conserve energy. BC Hydro selected Vanier, along with a number of other schools – including Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School – as a winner of the grant. “Since they wanted to do something within the school, I made the offer I would match the award with money from the facilities department,

said Fred McGregor, the school district’s manager of energy conservation. The school administration decided to match the grant with $1,000 as well. Vanier administration then decided to double its contribution to

$2,000, and the SD71 facilities department has thrown in another $500. The Environment Club has about $500 as well. “We’re up to $5,000, which will easily fund the project, said

McGregor. The occupancy sensors will be placed in the office area, in classrooms, in washrooms and in storage rooms. McGregor believes the sensor project can be completed by the end of December.

Ǩ

With the passage of the Teachers’ Act and the transition of the BC College of Teachers to the new Teacher Regulation Branch of the Ministry of Education, there are some changes that may require you to take urgent action. All persons who hold a non-practising or non-practising [retired] certiďŹ cate must upgrade to a practising certiďŹ cate by January 6, 2012 in order to retain a teaching certiďŹ cate.

ĞĔĚ

Non-practising certiďŹ cate holders who have not paid the $120 practising fee or $60 top-up fee to the College by January 6, 2012 will lose their certiďŹ cates under legislation upon the College’s transition to the new Teacher Regulation Branch in early January. After January 6, former BC College of Teachers members who held these certiďŹ cates would be required to reapply for new certiďŹ cates under the requirements in place at the time of application.
