Students benefit from double dipping Call it an academic double-double. Students enrolled in North Island College (NIC)’s dual admission programs are reaping the rewards of NIC’s exclusive agreements with the University of Victoria (UVic) this month, qualifying for twice the entrance awards in their first year of school. Six NIC students will have $1,000 to $20,500 waiting for them when they register for full-time studies at UVic, through scholarship options available only at NIC. NIC’s dual admission agreement with UVic gives students guaranteed entry to UVic while they take up to two years of classes at NIC. With one application, NIC students are eligible for exactly the same academic and athletic entrance awards as UVic students, in addition to the financial awards they can receive through their local community and the North Island College Foundation. Dual admission students get excellent financial and academic learning opportunities in their home communities.

It will change my life forever.” The money pays her entire undergraduate tuition and allows her to use her savings to pay for living expenses. Aside from being a senior cadet leader and trainer, Dubé is also involved in annual poppy sales. She has a passion for history, volunteering and teaching snare and kit drumming. With grades worthy of any university in North America, Dubé chose to forgo big name universities and start her studies at NIC, where she’ll be able to learn from NIC’s accessible instructors and have the support of her family without Emma Dubé, a dual admission student at North Island College, has earned $24,000 in scholarships from the University of Victoria and the local community. “We’re extremely Susan Auchterlonie, scholarships on top pleased that high NIC’s director of of $3,580 in local school students are college and community financial awards no longer leaving relations. — $2,580 from the the community but Highland graduate Stanley B. Some collections are not as strange as you may think In the world of appraisals there are three commonly reoccurring questions asked of me. How much is it worth? What’s the most valuable thing you have appraised? And what is the most unusual item you have appraised? Q. How much is it worth?

A. Depends… and depend it certainly does. An item’s value can depend not only on age, condition, rarity and market condition, but it can also depend on whether you are buying or selling. Sadly for most of us we buy retail and then sell wholesale. That is to say we often buy from a store or a

dealer and just like any business they have to make a living; so the ‘collector’s item’ you bought a few years back is going to have to appreciate in value considerably before you can sell it for a profit, let alone get your money back. Value can also depend upon how soon you need to sell the item. If you need cash right

now you probably won’t have the time to do the necessary research and find the ‘right buyer’ to maximize your price. Additionally, what it is worth can also depend upon your geographic location. That’s also why Fanny Bay Oysters cost less in the Valley than they do in downtown New York. Q. What’s the most valuable thing you have appraised? A. Depends… depends on how one terms ‘valuable.’ Most commonly people want to know the specific monetary value of an item. Often the artistic and intrinsic value is irrelevant to someone who simply wants to cash-in on an item. Additionally, ‘the most valuable’ can

discovery that beats all else, but as time goes on it becomes more and more difficult to recall the most unusual. During my many years upon this great earth I must have seen millions of things associated with the world of Antiques and Collecting. From the entire Lord’s Prayer carved on a single tiny grain of rice, to a diorama of stuffed (taxidermy) mice set at a miniature dining table while dressed in period Victorian costume. Your collection of Royal Doulton Character Mugs or collection of ‘John Deer tractor caps throughout the ages’ are actually not that unusual at all. Welcomed back into the family

Fishing Corner

Kristen Douglas Black Press

with Don Daniels Harry MacDonald was out fishing last week when he was delayed due to winds. The area Harry fished was Greensea Bay on the flood tide where he did really well. Harry caught and released a wild Coho, while keeping a large male Pink, still in good condition, and five Chum salmon while losing a few others. It looks like the Chums have arrived! Browns Bay Chum Derby is set for October 21, 22, and 23. In Courtenay the Puntledge River will be a busy spot for fishing as the river is now open for Chums. My attention to angling has turned to beach fishing at Salmon Point. I managed to hook a Coho but could only keep it on the line for a few seconds. The anglers who gather in this area are using spinning gear with pink lures which seem to do the trick. The wild Coho that are caught and released tend to range between 5 and 8 lbs, the hatchery’s clipped Coho are around 8 lbs plus. Sara Frederickson spent the day fishing with her dad at Comox Lake, after a long day of fishing with no bites, they decided to switch it Sara Frederickson, Campbell River up. Sara took the rod from the rod holder and began releasing the line and jerking her lure close to the boat, which resulted in Sara catching a 6.8 lb. trout.

I met with Roy Williams from Indoor Storage Solutions, located close to Discovery Harbour Marina at 1402 Ironwood Road, Campbell River. This indoor, heated storage is ideal for storing boats for companies which have large fleets or people with a single boat.

Campbell River’s Judi Edgar recently discovered a family she never knew. This summer Edgar flew to Rodekro, Denmark where she was reunited with a brother she had not spoken to in 49 years and her sister, who she last saw 31 years ago. “My family over

there is wonderful, they couldn’t have gone more out of their way to make us feel welcome,” said Edgar, who met her brother Raymond Jonigkeit’s wife, Carla, their daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter for the first time. “And we were all under one roof, so we had a lot of quality time together.” Edgar also brought

Perth, Australia, for the family reunion. It was Tomich who arranged the get together for Jonigkeit’s 65th birthday. Tomich and Jonigkeit have a different mother from Edgar and the three grew up in different countries – they in Germany and she in Canada. Edgar jumped at the chance to get reacquainted with the brother she had last seen when he was just 15 and she a 10-yearold girl. “He was a grown man,” Edgar said. “Very polite, just a real gentleman. And with Rosita, it was like we had never been apart, we picked up just like it had been yesterday,

it was wonderful.” Edgar said her month-long vacation to Denmark was an eye opening experience. She didn’t expect to be able to communicate with her family and the locals as well as she did. “Initially I was concerned about the language barrier because I had been told Carla couldn’t speak English well but she spoke really good English and the daughter and granddaughter did as well,” Edgar said. “At the different stores we went to, they would greet you in Danish but as soon as they heard you answer in English they would revert to English.” Cont. on Page 7

New connection will never be broken From Page 6 Edgar also got to experience a Danish holiday. “They wanted to share Christmas with us and the special foods they have at Christmas, so we had Christmas in July,” Edgar said. “They have a tradition where everyone eats a bowl of pudding and whoever has a nut in their pudding gets an extra present. I don’t think it was planned, but I got the nut and they gave me a ceramic hedgehog.” Edgar figures she came home with a little extra weight with all the pastries, sausages and cheeses they were fed every day. “My brother’s daughter lives to bake and what they say about Danish pastries is true, it was real good,” Edgar said. The only downside to the trip was the cold weather. “My brother has a 28-foot cabin cruiser and we planned to go out often and do some fishing but there were really cold winds nearly every day off the North Sea,” Edgar said. “Every day except

cobblestones she walked across with her parents as a child in the 1950s. But for Edgar the best part of the trip was discovering she has an amazing family on the other side of the world. “I’ve got a loving,

giving family that I’ve missed out on for many years,” Edgar said. “But we’ve since all gotten on Skype. It’s a ninehour time difference in Denmark and 16 in Australia so it’s really tricky but it all works, we’ve managed.

Third straight year of enrolment growth at NIC Lindsay Chung Black Press COURTENAY — Enrolments are up at North Island College’s Comox Valley campus once again this fall. That’s great news,

but Betty Tate, the department chair and instructor in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, pointed out this week there is a downside — a lack of space. “We have had some

serious issues around getting classroom space,” Tate, the faculty representative on the North Island College (NIC) board of governors, told the board Wednesday. “There are more students per class, and there are not a lot of classrooms that take 32-plus students, and we’ve got larger classes.” Lisa Domae, the college’s vice-president of student and educational services and planning, and Jan Carrie, the vicepresident of education, presented the Fall 2011 Stable Enrolment Report, which compares data as of Sept. 16, 2011, with data from Sept. 17,

North Island College’s Comox Valley Campus saw a three per cent increase in registrations over last year. 2010, to the board of governors Wednesday. Stable enrolments are expressed as registrations and headcounts, with registrations representing an enrolment in a single

class, and headcounts representing the number of individuals enrolled in a class or program. Total registrations at NIC are 5,551, which is up from 5,534 last year. Total headcounts this year are 2,803, an increase from 2,713 last year. Registrations at the Comox Valley campus have increased three per cent from 3,287 last year to

3,400, while there has been an eightper-cent increase in headcounts, which rose from 1,452 last year to 1,563 this year. Domae attributes the increases in the Comox Valley to increased offerings in trades programming after opening the trades training centre and a very strong interest in university transfers and health programming.

This is the third consecutive year of enrolment growth at the college, Domae told the board of governors. “We have strong enrolment for the fall semester,” she said. “We’re seeing a threeper-cent increase in headcounts, with registration numbers flat. It’s modest growth this fall, but we’re very happy to be able to sustain growth over the previous two years, where we had unprecedented growth.” NIC has seen growth in its health and human services department, academic division, continuing education and training division, and international education. Our campuses welcomed 80 international students this fall, which is a 10-per-cent increase over the past fall.
