Camp Fire USA First Texas Council

2009 ANNUAL REPORT

Camp Fire USA’s mission is to build caring, confident youth and future leaders. Our purpose is to provide opportunities for all children and youth, and those who care for them, to realize their potential and become caring, self-directed individuals. Programs supported by Camp Fire USA First Texas Council include after school, camping, environmental education, truancy prevention, child care advocacy and training, a child care and development center and service learning. Camp Fire USA First Texas Council is one of the largest councils in the country, providing coeducational programs in Tarrant, Dallas, Denton, Parker, Johnson, Hood and Wise counties. The Council serves approximately 12,000 girls and boys, and more than 4,000 child care providers in North Texas annually.

PRESIDENT/CEO Zem Neill

A message from the Chairman of the Board and President/CEO We are pleased to present the 2009 Annual Report and hope you enjoy reading about the impact the First Texas Council has had throughout North Texas this past year. John F. Kennedy said that children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future. Those words reflect the heart of the mission of Camp Fire USA First Texas Council. In 2009, the council served thousands of youth, and, by providing education and training to those who care for our youngest children, we positively affected thousands more. Our year would not have been successful without the support from many generous donors. In addition to the monetary support we received, we would like to express our gratitude to the individuals who volunteered more than 20,500 hours of their time in 2009. The Campaign for El Tesoro, under the leadership of Tod Miller and the campaign steering committee, continued

to garner support for this important asset of Camp Fire in 2009. Many individuals, corporations and foundations have invested in the renovation and revitalization of the camp. Work continues in 2010 as the committee shares the vision for El Tesoro with supporters who believe in the value of outdoor education and activities for today’s and tomorrow’s youth. As Camp Fire USA prepares to celebrate its national centennial in 2010, the First Texas Council, founded in 1914, is already preparing for its own centennial in 2014. With almost a century of service to children, youth and adults, we will continue to be committed to impacting the future – one child at a time.

Jesus (Jay) Chapa, Chairman of the Board

Zem Neill, President / CEO

Caring As one of the oldest child and youth development agencies in North Texas, Camp Fire USA First Texas Council understands the importance of good quality child care to the cognitive and social development of children.

Because the quality of care children receive in their earliest years can affect children for the rest of their lives, Camp Fire is dedicated to providing high quality direct care, as well as training those who care for young children.

In 2009, Camp Fire provided direct care to 1,271 children through its Child Care and Development Center and after school and summer programs in Fort Worth, Aledo and Alvarado. In addition, Camp Fire provided professional training, education and support to 4,041 child care providers through 252 classes and workshops. By equipping those who work in the care and education of our youngest children, Camp Fire extended its reach to more than 36,000 children, infants through age five.

2009 Highlights ● Camp Fire After School programs provided quality care, homework assistance and developmental activities to more than 1,000 students in Tarrant, Parker and Johnson counties. ● 53 child care professionals participated in the Child Development Associate program, a 120-hour/40-week credentialing program. ● 135 child care providers attended the six-day Early Childhood Management Institute to prepare for their Texas Director’s License credential. ● The fourth annual Celebration of Champions recognized area professionals with the 2009 Excellence in Child Care awards.

According to the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies, nearly 12 million children under age 5 are spending almost 40 hours in child care each week.

● Camp Fire’s child development specialists worked with 22 child care centers and family care providers in low-income areas through its Kindergarten Readiness program. More than 30 child care workers were recognized for their work. ●

The Child Care and Development Center implemented an online component of the High Scope curriculum for parents of children age four and five. It allows parents to track their children’s progress during the day, as well as enter pertinent information that happens at home.

● Camp Fire developed and launched online, self-study training in July that allows child care professionals to earn continuing education credits. More than 150 individuals signed on for the new training by the end of 2009.

Camping Camping, one of the cornerstones of Camp Fire USA First Texas Council, helps children develop leadership skills while learning to appreciate the environment. Camp Fire provides

outdoor opportunities for children and youth to learn, explore and play together, while developing a lasting appreciation of nature. In 2009, more than 2,250 children, youth and adults participated in Camp Fire’s resident camp, day camps, family camping and outdoor education

programs. In addition, 1,797 youth and adults enjoyed El Tesoro through community use programs. Since 1934, Camp El Tesoro, located outside Granbury, Texas, has provided outdoor programs and facilities for tens of thousands of girls and boys. In 2009, the Council moved forward with a $10.3 million capital campaign to renovate and improve the facilities to ensure that future generations can experience outdoor programs for the next 75 years.

2009 Highlights ● Camp El Tesoro kicked off a new day camp program to serve Granbury and Acton, Texas. ● A total of 723 campers enjoyed resident camp. ● The “Trails of Trees at El Tesoro” field guide was created for the Outdoor Education Program with the help of Lynne Summers and Texas Master Naturalist Weldon Hatch. ● Camptivity Day Camp participation increased by more than 8 percent, with a record of 1,754 camper weeks attended by 445 children.

Nature helps children develop powers of observation and creativity and instills a sense of peace and being at one with the world. Crain, William (2001). How Nature Helps Children Develop. Montessori Life, Summer 2001.

● More than 175 children attended spring and winter break day camps at Camptivity and El Tesoro. ● Three complete new curriculum units, “Collecting Fossils on Fall Creek,” “Bird Watching at El Tesoro,” and “Trails of Trees at El Tesoro” were developed and field tested by the Outdoor Education program.

Contributing Camp Fire programs include servicelearning components that emphasize the importance of giving back to the community through service to others.

Volunteering enhances development, teaches life skills, improves the community and encourages a lifelong service ethic. Research has indicated that the earlier children are involved in volunteering, the higher the probability of them volunteering during adolescence and later in life. In 2009, children and youth from our after school programs, child care center and truancy prevention programs participated in service projects that

helped them understand that they could make a difference. Projects included gathering food for the Tarrant Area Food Bank, distributing toys for Cowboy Santas, picking up litter for the Trinity River Clean-Up, collecting clothes for the Salvation Army, collecting toys for Manna Storehouse, and washing cars to raise money for ACH Child and Family Services. Youth who served as Counselor Assistants at Camptivity Day Camp helped counselors with daily teaching activities, set-up and clean up, while youth in the Camp El Tesoro Counselor-in-Training program volunteered for Family Camping programs and Clean-Up Day.

2009 Highlights ● 27 youth in the Camptivity day camp Counselor Assistant program donated more than 4,000 volunteer hours, assisting counselors by working with young campers. ● Eight students from the Step Up truancy prevention program packaged and distributed more than 300 gifts for low-income families in the Cowboy Santas program. ● The 6th, 7th and 8th-graders in Camptivity’s Youth Adventure Program had three fundraising car washes. They delivered a contribution to ACH Child and Family Services, where they also washed windows as a community service project.

Volunteering nourishes caring values as children relate to and empathize with others. Individuals who care about others are less likely to be involved in negative behaviors. Phalen, K.F. (2003). Kids of Character. Volunteer Leadership Journal, Summer, 4-9.

Connecting Making connections is at the core of Camp Fire’s child care, after school, camping, truancy prevention and professional child care training programs. We connect children and youth to caring teachers and counselors. We connect parents to quality child care.

We connect girls and boys to the outdoors. We connect child care workers and managers to professional training and resources. We connect at-risk students to role models. We help parents connect with their children through shared camping experiences.

2009 Highlights ● 359 parents and children participated in Dad & Me, Mom & Me and Family Camping weekends at Camp El Tesoro. ● 94 children who had experienced the death of a loved one attended El Tesoro de la Vida grief camp. ● Seven high school seniors from the Step Up truancy prevention program graduated in June. Four additional students received their GED certificate. ● Camp Fire’s Resource & Referral program helped more than 1,000 parents locate licensed and registered child care.

“We need to make sure that no boy or girl in America is growing up without having in his or her life the presence of a responsible, caring adult. Where else does a child learn how to behave? Where else does a child learn the experiences of the past...? Where else does a child look for the proper examples except from responsible, caring, loving adults in his or her life?”

– General Colin L. Powell
