Saluting the National Centennial of Camp Fire USA
Camp Fire USA First Texas Council 2010 ANNUAL REPORT
A message from
the Chairman of the Board and President/CEO We are pleased to present the 2010 Annual Report for First Texas Council and hope you enjoy reading about Camp Fire’s programs for youth and families delivered throughout North Texas during this past year. As Camp Fire USA celebrated its national centennial in 2010, we take pride in the fact that our local council will celebrate its own 100th anniversary in 2014. When you read the highlights in this report, please know that the year would not have been as successful without the support received from so many through contributions from donors and time invested by volunteers. In a few years, today’s youth will be sitting in our chairs doing our jobs. They will be teachers, construction workers, technicians, nurses and truck drivers. Some will be making corporate decisions and others will be providing leadership at all levels of government. Some will hold positions of responsibility in our financial institutions, while others will provide our health care. The critical question is…will they be ready? Thank you for helping to ensure that the answer is “yes” and that youth today will be ready to assume future positions of responsibility. We are appreciative of the support the council continues to receive to ensure that Camp Fire’s mission of building caring, confident youth and future leaders is achieved.

2010 Highlights • The Mental Health Connection Hand-in-Hand program partnered with Camp Fire USA to provide Connect4Success (C4S) training in Hood County which addressed challenging behaviors in children birth through age five. • Camp Fire After School programs and Child Development Center provided quality care and developmental activities to 1,056 children in Tarrant, Parker and Johnson counties. • By year end 2010, contributions to Camp Fire’s $10.3 million capital campaign to renovate Camp El Tesoro totaled $3.5 million. • Preliminary results from Camp Fire’s five-year Kindergarten Readiness pilot showed that participating children, on average, performed significantly better in many categories than their peers. The six areas assessed were Physical, Social/Emotional, Technology, General Knowledge, Math and Language. • More than 4,000 children, youth and adults participated in Camp Fire’s resident camp, day camps, family camping, outdoor education and community use programs.
2010 Community Partnerships Each year, Camp Fire USA First Texas Council serves more than 14,000 youth, adults and child care providers in Tarrant, Denton, Parker, Johnson, Hood and Wise counties. This would not be possible without the collaboration and support provided by local businesses, organizations and individuals. We would like to acknowledge appreciation and gratitude to Camp Fire’s 2010 Community Partners.

“Kids don’t like to feel different,” said Diane.
“After Austin’s dad passed away suddenly, I think he was a little isolated at school. Some children would avoid him because they just couldn’t understand. “ Then Diane heard about Camp Fire’s El Tesoro de la Vida grief camp that was specifically for children who had experienced the death of a loved one. “It turned out Austin’s third grade teacher was a volunteer at De La Vida. When he heard that his teacher was going to camp, he was excited to go. “He loved camp. I really think he could talk openly and felt understood and that others could relate to what he was going through.” Another parent recently shared that she was touched by Austin’s response when asked about the loss of his father. He said, “You can’t hold on to your sorrow.” “I am so grateful for El Tesoro de la Vida and what it’s meant to our family.”
“It doesn’t matter if I graduate,” said José, a high school
senior. “I can always get a job as a mechanic or something.” A former gang member, involved in risky behavior including drug and alcohol use, José was failing all of his classes. “He only joined Step Up to avoid more court fees,” said Melissa, program coordinator for Camp Fire’s truancy prevention program. “At first, he never made eye contact in our sessions. I was lucky to get a grunt or a nod,” she added. But then José was called into truancy court a second time. Because he had regularly attended Step Up meetings, he was given community service instead of being fined, and allowed to remain in school pending his continued presence in class. “After the judge gave him a second chance, he began working hard to make up his absences and grades,” said Melissa. “Teachers began commenting on what a good kid he was.” His attendance and grades improved dramatically. “José began to show a real interest in his shop class and was made manager over a big project,“ she added. “Now, instead of scowling, he’s smiling.”
“I’m one of Camp Fire’s biggest fans,” said Micheline,
who has been a licensed child care director for 19 years. “I first became acquainted with Camp Fire in 1992, and the professional education and support for child care providers just keeps getting better and better.” As the owner of her own day care center for 13 years, and now Child Care Coordinator for an employer-owned center, Micheline has always turned to Camp Fire for her staff training. “Many have a passion for child care, but without the training, you are not equipped to prepare these young children for school,” she added. “What many don’t realize is that the child care profession is one of the most important industries in the world. We don’t just help people go to work. We help prepare their children for life.” “The truth is…” she said, “we change the world.” 4
