This past year has been a time for visualizing the future as well as reflecting on the past... as we prepare to celebrate the Centennial anniversary of Camp Fire First Texas. The results and highlights shared in the 2013 annual report are the result of many individual and team efforts culminating in an outstanding year. The level of success reached would not have been possible without the continued support of donors, volunteers, and staff. Successes spanned from expansion of programs and growth in participation, to financial stability, and facility improvements. WoHeLo Lodge, as seen on the cover, broke ground in the fall of 2012 and was completed in the spring of 2013. The lodge has become the new center of Camp El Tesoro, but signifies so much more. It signifies investing in our future while paying respect to the past and it serves as a reminder that our role is to preserve what so many worked to build over the past 100 years. As donors, volunteers and participants, it is our hope that you will join us in celebrating the accomplishments of this century old organization. WoHeLo,

Brandon Chase, Zem Neill,

Chairman of the Board

President/CEO

Work. Health. Love. The first two letters of the words Work, Health and Love spell out a more than 100 year old watch word for Camp Fire: WoHeLo. Camp Fire First Texas seeks to make a difference in ways that will have a lasting effect on the social fabric of our community and the well-being of children and families. We accomplish this by focusing on these three social-impact areas:

Social Impact Areas

WOrk.

Camp Fire programs glorify and embrace the impact area of work − volunteerism, citizenship and service learning. We help youth give service in our community now and in the future. By providing children and youth with the outlets and opportunities to make an impact today, we help instill a new generation with the culture of giving community service.

This summer our teen programs made some amazing strides in giving back to the community through volunteering, learning about various organizations and how they impact our community.

HEalth.

Camp Fire recognizes that health is not single faceted. Real health stems from a number of factors. Through Camp Fire programs and outreach we support and foster the health and well-being for the “whole child” including the physical, cognitive and social/emotional.

Through Camp Fire Step Up more than 130 hours of community service were completed. Together, eight youth spent the summer in service including volunteering at the Tarrant Area Food Bank, CASA, Inc., serving meals at Union Gospel Mission and helping provide programming at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

LOve. WoHeLo signifies an organization that is steeped in history, yet ready to adapt to the future needs of youth and families and is the three-impact area framework that is implemented today across the programs Camp Fire First Texas provides.

3

Giving service is not only referenced in the historic “Camp Fire Law” but is reflected in this social impact area of Work – service learning, volunteerism and citizenship. This year, over 4,000 hours of service were given by Camp Fire youth. Whether it was the three to five year olds at the child development center participating in a bike-a-thon to support ill children, our Youth Adventure Program supporting the local food bank or our Step Up program volunteering at homeless shelters, museums, and retirement homes; Camp Fire youth are committed to making a difference in our community - today.

To love the outdoors, a person must be exposed to its beauty and understand their role in nature. Camp Fire helps create a love of the outdoors and foster environmental stewardship in children, youth and adults through a robust outdoor education curriculum and camping programs for all ages.

The hands-on help from Camp Fire youth volunteers at the museum was a highlight for them and the museum. They started the program by learning about the museum and its operations and later enjoyed a movie at the Omni Theater. They were also instructed on how to cultivate a love of learning and curiosity in others. By helping guests of all ages apply the scientific process, they facilitated the discovery of augmented reality, creating animated videos and take part in community art activities that explore light and color in many different contexts while supporting the museum’s goals.

Social Impact Areas

Camp Fire First Texas strives to make a meaningful difference in our communities through the development of programs that support the healthy growth and development of the whole child. In 2013, more than 3,000 hours of professional development were provided to early child care professionals and more than 13,000 children birth to age five became better prepared to start school on-track with their peers through a Camp Fire school readiness program. Currently more than 2,000 child care professionals from 31 programs are actively participating in Camp Fire’s school readiness initiatives. In October, two-year-old George started at Like My Own child care center which is one of those centers. It was apparent though observation and assessments that little George was already behind in his language development. “George was extremely reserved and demonstrated behaviors consistent with language development issues like crying if another child took something from him and having awkward peer interactions,” said his teacher Michella. Michella’s first goal was to make sure George felt safe and secure in his environment. “We’ve learned through the training and mentoring Camp Fire provides that unless a

child is connected and feels safe, the learning just won’t happen the same way,” added Michella. After six weeks, George made significant strides in his language development, but that is when his family fell on hard times and could no longer afford to send George to the center. Each day he was away from the center, his mother said he’d get up in the morning, put on his backpack, and head to the door eager to go to school. It was a blessing when the owner of the center, Retha, called George’s mom to ask where he was currently enrolled. When she found out he was staying at home, she offered to allow George to come back to Like My Own at no cost to the family.

“I saw the progress George made in just six weeks, and as a person who advocates for children and who cares for them, I just couldn’t justify allowing this little one to fall behind his peers again,” said Retha. George is back in school maintaining his progress, and thanks to a family both in his home and at his child care center he continues to make wonderful strides. It is well known that when children experience high quality early education, they learn more, develop more completely, and are much more likely to become confident, capable, caring youth and adults. When given the opportunity as children and young adults to make choices and develop confidence, they no longer strive, but thrive.

This year, more than 3,400 youth and adults were connected to nature through Camp Fire First Texas. Almost 2,000 of those connections were made through local school groups who attended an outdoor education program at Camp Fire Camp El Tesoro. “A lot of our students are apprehensive before they get to Camp El Tesoro for our three-day, two-night trip,” said fifth grade science teacher Leslie Harvey, “But when it is time to leave, they are begging to stay longer. That is when I think to myself, ‘Success!’” Harvey has brought her students to Camp El Tesoro’s outdoor education program for the past two years. Each Fall the students are lead through both formal and informal activities to introduce and reinforce scientific concepts and competencies that are required for their grade level. Everything from archery and campfires are used as a real life example to build dialogue and understanding around scientific content.

“Presenting the information in the outdoor environment at El Tesoro gives my students the opportunity to make real world connections to the concepts that we are currently discussing and will introduce at a later date. As we work through various learning units like erosion or fossil fuels, the students refer to their outdoor education experience and use that information to draw parallels.” The merits of the educational activities are reason enough for the group to continue the annual learning trek to El Tesoro, but the outdoor education experience is much more than a science lesson. Harvey explains that many of her students have never had an opportunity to go camping and experience the natural world the way they do during their outdoor education trip and in many instances, may never again. “We are creating once-in-a-lifetime memories for a lot of these children. What I value about our experience with Camp Fire’s outdoor education program is my students learn more than just the lessons needed for success in the classroom. They walk away with new, life-long skills that they will carry with them.”
