Camp Fire First Texas has been investing in the youth of our community for 100 years. Embarking on the journey to celebrate and commemorate a milestone with such reach was a significant undertaking. Four goals emerged and led our actions throughout the year: Reconnect, Raise Awareness, Celebrate “A Century of Sparking Discovery,” and Show Thanks. On behalf of the board and staff, thank you for making the 2014 Centennial Celebration a year to remember!

From the early days of Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls, Camp Fire First Texas has grown into one of the largest councils in the United States, with programs for girls and boys that include everything from camping to school readiness.

Reconnect Countless memories have been made around kitchen tables, fire rings, and in the living rooms and schools of North Texas. It was important to reconnect all those wonderful memories and the Camp Fire alumni who treasure them.

For 100 years, Camp Fire First Texas has provided safe, fun and inclusive programs. A place where youth form lasting relationships, develop a sense of belonging and make positive contributions to the lives of their families and community.

Raise Awareness Camp Fire First Texas has a rich history in the community and it also has a bright future. Through the exhibit at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History as well as a special publication featured in the Fort Worth Business Press, parade floats and a number of community outreach events including Camp Fire Museum Days that offered hands-on activities for families, Camp Fire was able to demonstrate the richness of its heritage and innovation.

Show Thanks To be successful for 100 years takes a village. Throughout the year statements and actions of our gratitude to our communities, donors, volunteers and alumni were thoughtful and intentional. From opening the year at the Camp Fire Annual Meeting, to spotlighting alumni in commemorative publications to recognizing our valued volunteers through awards and naming seven Centennial Gulick Awardees (see page 8), to finally culminate with a service project of lasting thanks – the Centennial Legacy Project Daffodil – a beautification project resulting in 33,000 daffodil bulbs being planted on the banks of the Trinity River in Fort Worth.

Volunteer Awards Centennial Gulick Award Recipients

This award is the highest form of volunteer recognition given by Camp Fire. The Gulick recognizes extraordinary council leadership over an extended period of time. It is reserved for very special people and named after the founder of Camp Fire, Luther Halsey Gulick. Its symbolic gold pin depicts crossed logs and flame within the traditional WoHeLo triangle. It has been seven years since Camp Fire First Texas has bestowed this honor. In 2014, six deserving individuals were recognized for their years of leadership and commitment. They will forever be the Centennial Gulick Award Recipients.

Anne Bass Anne Bass was a Camp Fire youth member. While in the Horizon Club, Anne, along with others from Fort Worth, participated in the Europe trip led by Louisa Haun, then Camp Fire First Texas CEO/President. Her parents were both involved in Camp Fire and her father served on the Board of Directors, so Anne came by it quite honestly as she served on the Board from 1975-1980 and later was a representative on the Foundation Board from 1989-1993. Anne had an active role on the planning committee for the first An Artists’ Christmas and together with Bob served as Honorary Chairs that year and again for the 25th celebration. She and Bob were the Honorary Chairmen for the Campaign for Children which established the Work/Family Division that serves the early childhood community. The gracious, lifelong support of Anne’s family continues with a major contribution to the Campaign for El Tesoro. Through the years she has provided thoughtful advice to the council.

Kay Gunn There is definitely a pattern with the Centennial Gulick Award recipients. Kay Gunn also began as a Club Leader, served on the Board of Directors, 1979-1984, Board Vice President in 1982 and Vice President of Camping in 1984. However, it was her representation in the request to the McFadden Foundation that helped Camp Fire be named as one of the top three recipients of the McFadden Fund, receiving 16.2% of the annual allocations. Through 2014, the McFadden Fund has provided $3,860,504 in support to Camp Fire. Kay moved from the volunteer world to the professional staff from 1990-1999 as Camp Fire Staff Vice President of Development and later served on the McFadden Award Selection and Council Awards Committees. She has already received the Camp Fire Sebago, Chairman’s and Ingram awards.

Joan Katz Joan Katz served, first, as a Club Leader and later as a member of the Board of Directors from 1989-1994 holding the role of Board Vice President of Administration in 1994. But it was her true vision along with a dear friend, the late Lisa Flory, to create Camp

8

Fire El Tesoro de la Vida, a camp to help children heal after the death of a loved one. Joan poured her heart into the formative, critical years of El Tesoro de la Vida as co-director from 19891994. In addition to the hours of planning and fundraising, Joan was at camp the entire week for each of those years. It was Joan who coined the well-known phrase synonymous with the weeklong camp, “You can’t choose the way you are hurt, but you can choose the way you heal.” Joan has remained an avid supporter of Camp Fire and El Tesoro de la Vida, which through its 27 year history has served over 2,000 children and has been recognized by the American Camp Association and others for its innovative programming for youth. She has also been the recipient of the Kraft and Board Chairman’s awards.

Sunnie LeBlanc Sunnie LeBlanc began her volunteer involvement with Camp Fire as a Club Leader. Prior to 1983. She served on the District Committee followed by District Camping Chairman she then served on the council Board of Directors from 1986-1990. However, it was her passion and tenacity to establish a high-quality event which led to her chairing An Artists’ Christmas the first two years in 1985 and 1986. Her leadership forever set the bar for subsequent chairmen. An Artists’ Christmas events have raised more than $3.7 million for the council. In recognition of her leadership and commitment, Sunnie previously received the Wakan, Kraft, Fargher, Spurck and Shawnequas awards.

Tod Miller

Tod Miller’s involvement with Camp Fire began on the baseball field in 1984 when he coached a number of Camp Fire staff. In 1985, Tod’s volunteer career with Camp Fire began as a member of the Camping Committee. Little did he know it would be a volunteer relationship that would span three decades and impact thousands of lives. Tod has completed three terms of leadership. The first began in 1994 and spanned through 1999. During which, he held a variety of roles including serving on the Board of Directors, Board Vice President and Board President (19961997). There was a brief hiatus from his volunteer work at Camp Fire, but he still managed to serve on the Finance Committee. In 2007, he returned for his second term to serve on the Board as

Treasurer and Executive Committee through 2010. Term number three began in 2012. Additionally, he has chaired the Campaign for El Tesoro which under his positive, dedicated leadership has raised over $9.9 million toward its $10.7 million goal.

Lynda Shropshire Lynda Shropshire was a Club Leader and served on the Board of Directors from 1976-1981. Many have noted that one of her most successful board commitments was serving on the executive search committee which selected Zem Neill as the First Texas CEO. Lynda further served as Board Treasurer then

Pam Brocato

Board President in 1980. It was Lynda who brought the idea of An Artists’ Christmas to Camp Fire. In 1977, Lynda received the Spurck Award. She was a member of the Foundation Board in 1985-1989 and again from 2003-2008. Currently, Lynda serves on the Campaign for El Tesoro Steering Committee, where her leadership has been instrumental in securing gifts for the campaign.

30th Anniversary of An Artists’ Christmas Thirty years ago, in 1985, a group of forwardminded volunteers were challenged to create a new fundraising idea to benefit Camp Fire

A Focus on Quality: Quality has been the focus of Camp Fire programming. In collaboration with The Thrive Foundation for Youth, Camp Fire has infused a research-based methodology through all programs to help youth and teens: IDENTIFY SPARKS

First Texas. They accepted the challenge and

GROWTH MINDSET

An Artists’ Christmas was born!

GOAL MANAGEMENT REFLECTION

The first year consisted of 60 pieces of art including Christmas trees decorated by celebrities as well as artists. This year’s gala and art auction featured 84 works of art and to-date the event has raised more than $3.7 million dollars for children, youth and families in North Texas.

Armed with these skills, and with the guidance of trained, caring adults, we know that Camp Fire participants are more likely to: • Achieve higher grades • Stay in school • Demonstrate social competence • Lead a healthy lifestyle • Volunteer to help other people • Be environmentally conscious • Have a sense of purpose • Achieve their full potential

It is making a difference!

At the national level, Camp Fire begins encouraging boys to participate in all Camp Fire activities. Locally, Ann Sheets joins the First Texas council in 1977 as El Tesoro camp director, and Zem Neill joins as the eighth and current, executive director a year later. In 1979, the first boys attend overnight camp at El Tesoro.

1980

In 1983, a $1.5 million capital campaign moves the First Texas Council into its new building on Meacham Boulevard, and El Tesoro celebrates 50 Years. An Artists’ Christmas raises $22,000 in 1985 during its first year and in 1988, El Tesoro de la Vida is founded to offer support for children grieving the loss of a loved one.
