2018 Annual Report

At this year’s Report to the Community, we’re very excited to recognize the recipients of the Ella C. McFadden Service to Youth Awards: Lynn McKinney of Aledo ISD, Dr. Debbie Rhea of TCU, and the Tarrant County College Child Development and Education Department. These individuals and entities have each made significant contributions on behalf of the youth of our communities. Long-time volunteer Patricia “Pat” Vaughan will be recognized posthumously with the Luther Halsey Gulick Award, Camp Fire’s highest recognition, for individuals who exemplify extraordinary, lifetime leadership. Pat’s service and generosity to Camp Fire First Texas spanned five decades and was unparalleled. Looking ahead to 2019, Camp Fire will continue to implement our strategic plan, emphasizing Viability, Influence and Participation as we work toward providing programming for an increasing number of youth, families and child care professionals. Our sincere thanks to our board, program volunteers, partners, supporters, friends and staff for supporting Camp Fire as we change young lives for the better in our communities – inside and out.

Volunteers spent 1,539 hours supporting Camp Fire programs. The 34th An Artists’ Christmas art auction and gala, chaired by board members Jake Yarbrough and Jenene Schaffer, was held at The Reserve at the new African Savanna in the Fort Worth Zoo and included a special treat, feeding the giraffes! Proceeds from the evening went directly to Camp Fire programs preserving and inspiring laughter, joy and exploration for the next generation who will forever be impacted by the connections and skills they receive through our after school programs, teen services, environmental education, camping and schoolreadiness programs. The live ask portion of the event raised a recordsetting $35,745 to support youth.

COMMUNITY REPRESENTATION

More than 350 attended the El Tesoro de la Vida Benefit Dinner – a benefit event for Camp Fire’s weeklong grief camp for children. Emcee Justin Frazell from 95.9 The Ranch even sold the jacket off his own back for $1,000 to an enthusiastic audience member during the live auction.

The first annual Topgolf fundraiser was a hole-in-one. The event, chaired by board member Travis Patterson, hosted more than 180 golfers and their friends. Guests enjoyed live music by Andrew Sullivan and raised more than $25,000 for Camp Fire.

iability

Camp Fire’s work has been empowering the youth in our community for more than 100 years (104, to be exact!). Longevity like that doesn’t just happen – it’s a product of strategic planning, a strong mission and a lot of grit. And, it takes a solid partnership between volunteers, community supporters and staff. At Camp Fire, viability is more than just doing what it takes to survive – it’s doing what it takes to thrive. It’s developing and sustaining the financial resources necessary to fulfill our mission - our promise to youth and our community: Camp Fire changes young lives for the better in our community. Inside and out.

nfluence

From outdoor education to kindergarten readiness, after school programs to summer camp – Camp Fire volunteers and staff are incredibly knowledgeable and are good at what they do. This influence goes beyond program locations. Every day our experts lift up community initiatives, partner with other agencies and work as change agents for youth, solidifying our position as a leading authority in North Texas on early childhood education, youth development and nature-based learning.

Thirty-five members of the Aledo High School National Honor Society volunteered with the Camp Fire after school programs in Aledo’s five elementary schools.

What does it mean to participate in a Camp Fire program? Camp Fire program outcomes are measured on a regular basis. It isn’t just enough for us to be the best – we want to prove it, and our numbers don’t lie. Our programs aren’t just for fun – they are high-quality and sustainable. No matter which area you interact with – Youth Development, Outdoor Connection or Professional Growth – when you participate in a Camp Fire program, you’re getting the best experience possible.

El Tesoro hosted science teachers from across the state during the annual Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching for a day of outdoor, hands-on experiential learning. Staff introduced the valuable curriculum and lessons provided through the Texas Outdoor Education Center at El Tesoro.

Denis Cranford was selected for the 2018 Corporate Philanthropy Awards presented by the Fort Worth Business Press and United Way of Tarrant County. Each summer since 1993, Denis has volunteered at Camp Fire El Tesoro de la Vida, serving as volunteer director since 1996. Of the 120 campers who participate in El Tesoro de la Vida, 71% attend on scholarship. These scholarships are largely funded by the annual El Tesoro de la Vida Benefit Dinner for which he has served as event chair or committee member each year.

Camp Fire became an official provider of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) by The Texas Education Agency (TEA), opening access and visibility of Camp Fire professional development courses to ISD and charter school teachers and serving as a leader in educating educators.
