A YEAR OF PURPOSE. A YEAR OF IMPACT. Camp Fire First Texas 2019 Annual Report
THE 2019 CAMP FIRE JOURNEY There’s a song that Camp Fire campers sing which begins “2-0-1-9 at El Tesoro……. no other year the same.” How true that is for all of Camp Fire First Texas! From our new partnership with the IDEA Public Schools, providing after school and pre-K care on two different campuses to recognition of the Early Education Apprenticeship program as the first of its kind in the state, 2019 was definitely not the same as any other year in our history. Throughout 2019, we had the opportunity to serve thousands of youth, adults, and their families in our five-county jurisdiction in the program areas of youth development, camping and outdoors, and early education workforce development. In this report you’ll find highlights of 2019, as well as a graphic that shows the wonderful Camp Fire journey. A journey takes planning, it takes having the resources to go, and it results in memories of big events and small moments. So it is with Camp Fire. As the outgoing and incoming board chairs and CEO, we have had the privilege of working closely with a dedicated group
Bill McCoy Board Chair, 2019
of community volunteers who make up our board, as well as the talented group of individuals who serve on the staff of Camp Fire. These two groups are key to our success – the board, responsible for planning our journey with strategic direction and policy, and the staff, responsible for delivering the program that makes up our journey. We are very appreciative of each person for their service to youth and those who care for them. We had some of those big events – a great year at El Tesoro, record-setting attendance at a Camp Fire conference for child care providers, and substantial growth in after school and teen programs. But the small moments – a kind word from a fellow camper, a colleague who provided a tip in educating young children, a word of encouragement to a teen – these are the things that are lasting, impactful memories. As with all journeys, we at Camp Fire must ensure that resources are available so that we can make an impact on the lives of participants. In this report, we recognize the thousands of donors
Jake Yarbrough Board Chair, 2020
who have contributed to making the Camp Fire promise come alive. We are very grateful for every contribution, but in 2019, the Leo Potishman Foundation funded the addition of a lake at Camp El Tesoro, an amazing gift of $1.1 million. Thank you to all of the individuals, corporations, foundations, family trusts, and others who have believed in our mission and made possible the Camp Fire program. Having had a year like no other, little did we realize that 2019 would be such a fond memory! With the challenges of a nation-wide pandemic in early 2020, we recognize that there will be countless changes in how we deliver our programs from this point forward. Our Camp Fire journey in 2020 will require some procedural differences to ensure increased focus on the health and safety of every participant. Through any changes, we will never waiver on Our Promise. We remain steadfast in our commitment of changing young lives for the better in our community – inside and out.

On September 11, more than 100 students, educators and community leaders gathered for a Celebration for Early Education Career Pathways held at Tarrant County College announcing CDA to College Credit and the first U.S. Department of Labor approved Early Childhood Education Apprenticeship Program in the State of Texas. Camp Fire Early Childhood Conference sold out for the second year in a row. Why does this matter? Fort Worth (and beyond) leaders have placed a spotlight on the value of QUALITY early education. That starts with having educated early childhood teachers & directors. This conference brings together 450 classroom teachers and directors who are committing to increase their knowledge. That’s a big deal.
CAMP FIRE JOURNEY A JOURNEY OF CHANGE “Camp Fire will change you. It will make you see the world and yourself differently,” explained Emily Smith who is now finishing her freshman year at North Side High School. She first walked through the doors at Camp Fire Diamond Hill Station (DHS) Summer Day Camp when she was in first grade. She was shy, came with her cousins and found the program to be a fun constant in her life year after year. “My time at DHS was always fun,” she said. It was a big point in her life in elementary school because it was always there for her every summer. As she grew older, she became a part of Camp Fire Teens in Action, where one of her most treasured memories was the opportunity to create a concept, design the theme and participate in the Fort Worth Parade of Lights. But she also found the exercises and discussion groups that centered on communication styles and self-awareness as life-altering moments. “I began to be nicer and realize I could accept others even if they didn’t have the same ideas I did.” Throughout her time with Camp Fire, Emily has also been a Camp El Tesoro camper throughout the summer and with Teens in Action weekend camping trips. The time at camp allowed Emily the opportunity to connect with her friends without their phones or other distractions. “We just got to talk and be there for one another,” she explained. Reflecting on her “hills and valleys” through the years, she shared that when a favorite group leader had to move away, she was sad, but learned that sometimes people will leave and that doesn’t mean they don’t care and that the group will still be there for you, like a family. She also recognized that because of her journey with Camp Fire she has become more open and outgoing (a social butterfly as her group leader defines it). Emily is grateful for her journey so far and knowing she always has someone to support her as she continues along her path. “Whether it is academic or personal, they will always help you no matter what you have going on.”

A JOURNEY OF LEGACY Katy Waits was at the El Tesoro Trail Run. “A camper of mine from years ago when I was a Counselor-in-Training came up and asked me if I remembered ‘Linner.’ It was a conversation we had about an imaginary picnic combining all our favorite foods from lunch and dinner,” she laughed. While the conversation seems a bit silly, it is a perfect example of the cycle of legacy building that is ingrained in the Camp Fire Journey. When Katy was seven years old, she came to Camp El Tesoro as a second-generation camper (her mom came when she was eight years old). “I loved camp and I kept bringing my friends and family out every chance I got,” she explained. Katy has come to camp every summer, attended multiple Family Camping Weekends and she never misses a Breakfast with Santa. She has grown up at camp and went through the Counselorin-Training (CIT) leadership program. “Being a CIT was one of the most important things I have done in my life. You are learning to be a leader and unite with people from all these different areas and walks of life with one thing in common – your love of camp. You learn to work with adult leaders at camp and through that you learn to inspire those below you to become involved in the program,” she explained. After Katy was hired as a counselor she channeled the people who impacted her life and the lessons they modeled. Her counselors added to her journey teaching skills like patience, acceptance, conflict resolution and creativity. Later, she was able to work alongside them at El Tesoro de la Vida. In them she saw her own future. “I watched them still volunteering and continuing to live the lessons from camp in their lives and I just thought, ‘That’s what I am going to turn into.’” In that moment at the Camp Classic Trail Run, Katy realized that she may be that same person to her former camper. “It blew my mind that this little interaction from years ago still impacts her today. I could bring that to her life.” And the legacy continues.
