Renaissance of Art
We have had the pleasure of attending Camp Fire’s An Artists’ Christmas for three years, and it is an honor to serve as the honorary chairs this year to benefit this amazing organization. It is our privilege to live in and support our community through this longstanding organization and share with others how it provides the opportunity for children and youth to develop their abilities and identify their passion and “spark” within.
We wholeheartedly believe Camp Fire will guide children to become our community’s future leaders.
We feel very honored to be the event chairs for Camp Fire First Texas’ 2013 An Artists’ Christmas. The dedication and passion we have seen demonstrated by the staff at Camp Fire First Texas is inspiring and infectious. We are so proud to be associated with an organization that is dedicated to the betterment of children and their future, and whose commitment impacts children every day.
Words cannot express our sincere gratitude to the event sponsors, donors and especially the artists, who have all contributed to make this a truly special evening — your generosity means so much, not just this evening but throughout the entire year. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to the committee members and volunteers, who have given so much of themselves
and of their time to ensure that this evening is a memorable one.
Thank you for the privilege of serving as this year’s Art Chairs. It has been a joy to be involved with this event since the very beginning, 29 years and running! As gallery owners since 1974, and Camp Fire supporters for about as long, this is an event that continues to be near and dear to our hearts for many reasons.
and their commitment to supporting youth in our community with their time and talents. We can’t think of any other event where you can purchase wonderful works of art for your personal collection, while also supporting programs to improve the lives of children and youth in our community. It means so much to us and to the larger art community that a contribution from tonight’s proceeds benefits the Emergency Artists Support
League, which provides grants to area artists in need of emergency assistance. It is Camp Fire’s way of giving back to the community that has so generously supported this event since its inception. So remember, as you bid on art tonight, every dollar matters and will go to support the wonderful programs Camp Fire offers to our youth! Have a great night and show your support by purchasing the outstanding artwork on display.
featured tonight, but more importantly, to further the cause of helping Camp Fire “light the fire within” thousands of children, youth and families in our area.
This event would not happen without the immense talent and equally generous hearts of our contributing artists. Your vision and craft inspires us.
We are grateful for the servant leadership of the many volunteers and committee members who have invested deeply with their time, talent and resources to make this night memorable and significant. I would specifically like to recognize: Cheryl and Fred Moore, our Honor Chairs; and Linda and Jake Jacobson, our Event Chairs. Special thanks as well to our returning Art Chairs, Pam and Bill Campbell.
On behalf of the Camp Fire First Texas board of directors, I sincerely hope you enjoy the evening, the art, the gourmet food and the company. Your presence blesses all of us at Camp Fire — and your generous support will bless countless children and families for generations.
We would like to thank those who are here tonight to share in that belief. You make this event possible: To Linda and Jake Jacobson who have poured themselves into this night. It has been a pleasure to work with you.
Cheryl and Fred Moore 2013 Honorary Chairs
To the Art Chairs, Pam and Bill Campbell, and the wonderful artists who have supported this incredible event for 29 years! To the event committee who has tirelessly dedicated themselves to the promise of Camp Fire and believing in the difference we all can make in the lives of children. We challenge each of you this evening to support Camp Fire programs that are a lasting investment in our future leaders.
To all, we say thank you, and please enjoy this night of fine art, great company and revelry, and know that you have helped to light the fire within!
Linda and Jake Jacobson 2013 Event Chairs
We are proud of all the Fort Worth artists who have made generous donations to An Artists’ Christmas

Jurors Dr. Margaret C. Conrads, Deputy Director of Art and Research at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art Margaret C. Conrads, Ph.D. has been the Deputy Director of Art and Research for the Amon Carter Museum of American Art since 2012. In her role, Conrads provides leadership and vision for the museum’s curatorial excellence, oversees the museum’s conservation program and library and serves as staff liaison with the Board of Trustees acquisitions committee. This is the first time she has lent her skills to serve as a juror for An Artists’ Christmas.
Prior to her arrival in Fort Worth, Conrads served as the Samuel Sosland Curator of American Art at the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. Recent projects there included the reinstallation for a major expansion of the American collection, which opened in 2009. She was also the editor and a primary author of American Paintings to 1945: The Collections of The NelsonAtkins (2007). Conrads received international recognition for the 2001 exhibition and catalogue Winslow Homer and the Critics: Forging a National Art in the 1870s (Princeton
University Press, 2001) and was on the curatorial team and an essayist for the 2009 exhibition American Stories: Paintings of Everyday Life, 1765–1915 presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In addition to Homer, she has published on American artists Thomas Hart Benton, George Caleb Bingham, Alexander Calder, and Thomas Cole, among others. Conrads received her doctorate in Art History from the City University of New York Graduate Center with a concentration in American art to 1945.
Alison Hearst, Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth Alison Hearst is Assistant Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Hearst served as the assistant curator of the 2013 exhibition México Inside Out: Themes in Art Since 1990, an international, multigenerational group exhibition that explored themes of daily life in Mexico. In the accompanying catalogue, Hearst conducted an interview with artist Melanie Smith. She is currently organizing a solo project with the New York–based artist Fred Tomaselli, which will open in January 2014. Tomaselli has exhibited widely around the world, and he is known for his highly detailed paintings that bend reality through visual stimulation and
seduction, illustrating the utopian and transcendental abilities of art. Hearst’s earlier outside projects include contributions to a variety of publications, such as Art Lies, Art Critical, Glasstire, Pastelegram, and ...might be good. She has curated several exhibitions and helped facilitate special artist projects with Subtext Projects, a curatorial collaborative team she co-founded in 2008. Hearst completed a bachelor of fine arts degree in art history at the University of North Texas in 2004 and a master’s degree in art history at Texas Christian University in May 2007. Her
thesis, Marcel Broodthaers’s Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles: The nexus of institutional critique, offers an in-depth look at the artist’s satirical, critical, and fictional museum, Musée d’Art Moderne, Département des Aigles (1968–1972), and argues that this project is a forerunner of institutional critique and forms the crucial nexus of this artistic practice. Hearst specifically addresses the museological strategies used in the Musée d’Art Moderne by Broodthaers to mimic and parody museums, creating a deconstructive institutional critique that revealed and criticized art institutions’ methods of display, economics, politics, and hidden foundations.
Dr. Mark Thistlethwaite, Kay and Velma Kimbell Chair of Art History at Texas Christian University Professor Mark Thistlethwaite holds the Kay and Velma Kimbell Chair of Art History. Having earned degrees in art history from the University of California at Santa Barbara (B.A. and M.A.) and University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D.), he specializes in the art of the United States. As a teacher, he has received TCU’s Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Honors Program’s “Professor of the Year” award. As a scholar, he has published
books and articles on nineteenthcentury and twentieth-century art, particularly on the subject of history painting. Dr. Thistlethwaite has chaired the City of Fort Worth’s Art Commission and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and on the Board of Trustees of the African American Museum in Dallas, and he is a member of the Visiting Committee of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.

Access to the secret rooms varies and is based on availability, and includes the impressive Bramante Staircase (Scala del Bramante), which is actually a ramp on the corner of the Pope’s Palace; the Room of Gold (Sala degli Ori), an opulent, rarely seen room that holds a dazzling collection of papal gold jewelry and precious Etruscan jewels; and the Niccoline Chapel (Cappella Niccolina), adorned with gold brought back from Christopher Columbus’ travels, and frescoes by Fra Angelico, a Renaissance painter whose mesmerizing artwork pre-dates Michelangelo’s. In addition to the closed rooms, see many of the Vatican Museums’ classic attractions as your expert guide entertains you with tales of Vatican art and power.

Guest rooms overlook either the charming courtyard or the garden of the historic Palazzo Spada. The 4-star Hotel Ponte Sisto is a gorgeously renovated palazzo and just steps from Trastevere and Campo de’ Fiori. Located in the heart of Rome on a quiet downtown street, you are within walking distance to the Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Via Giulia and the Trastevere district. A wonderful choice of trattorias awaits just across the Ponte Sisto in Trastevere.
