ALL-NEW SALTEX WEBSITE OFFERS VISITORS A YEAR-ROUND INDUSTRY RESOURCE ALTEX (Sports Amenity & Landscape Trade Exhibition) organiser Brintex has announced that the revamped SALTEX website (www.iogsaltex.com) offers visitors to the Windsor event a wealth of information on exhibitors and their products and services.
S
The easy-to-use online resource will enable visitors to access company profiles of the expected 300 exhibitors along with product information, special deals, videos and instant links to companies’ social media. “Event research has told us that visitors need more information in advance of SALTEX in order to better plan their time at the show,” says event director Jon Gibson. “Similarly, a large number of exhibitors have asked us to give them more pre-event opportunities to promote themselves. The new fully-integrated website will satisfy both of those demands and will be a year-round industry resource.” Jon adds that in the coming weeks the website’s Exhibitor Zone will also give exhibitors access to the online Exhibitor Manual, an extensive Press and Publicity Guide, and the Exhibitor Toolkit which provides
downloadable event logos and web banners, as well as easy-to-use templates to create email invitations. Exhibitors will also be able to order free SALTEX tickets overprinted with their own logos. The website will also contain information about the range of special features and attractions being planned, and will be open to visitor registration from May 1. SALTEX (www.iogsaltex.com), the Sports Amenity & Landscape Trade Exhibition organised by the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) and managed by Brintex Events, will be held on 3-5 September 2013 at Windsor Racecourse, Berks. Founded in 1938, the exhibition is attended by open space professionals and volunteers who design, construct, manage and maintain the UK's outdoor facilities - from sports grounds of every type to motorway service stations, and from stately homes to local council parks and schools. They visit SALTEX to meet around 300 suppliers of the machinery, tools, vehicles, turf, soils, seeds, aggregates, artificial or natural surfaces, playgrounds, landscaping equipment, street furniture, arboriculture, horticulture, safety, security, training and education services designed to help them do their jobs as effectively as possible.

QUALITY PLAY SPACES MAKE HAPPY FAMILIES AT UK HOLIDAY PARKS hen it comes to holiday time, UK holiday parks, caravan and camp sites are teeming with families looking to kick back and enjoy some muchneeded rest and relaxation. However there’s one group of people that aren’t so interested in keeping still and that’s children. Children love to play, especially on holiday – from exploring new places and meeting new friends to letting off steam and trying something adventurous.
W
Holiday park managers know all too well that if children are enjoying themselves and having fun, their parents and families will be happier and relaxed. Chances are that they will spend more money as a result. Savvy managers are investing in play equipment and play spaces, both outdoors and indoors, with many maximizing income by opening their play spaces to non–residents. UK play companies are designing and installing play equipment and play spaces in holiday and leisure settings every day, from indoor soft play barns to outdoor playgrounds. But how can holiday park managers be sure that they are working with a reputable play company that is installing the best quality equipment and operating to the highest standards? Well that’s easy – they can turn to a professional trade body they can trust. The UK play industry is estimated to be worth £125 million and the voice of that industry is the Association of Play Industries (API) www.api-play.org. Founded in 1984, the API represents manufacturers, installers, designers and distributors of outdoor and indoor play equipment and safety surfacing. It campaigns at the highest levels for recognition of the value of investment in active play and champions the role of active play in combating child health problems like obesity. API members abide by a strict Professional Code of Conduct and operate to the highest standards. The API badge is a quality mark and there are clear advantages to choosing a member when specifying a play project. The API urges holiday park buyers to ask their play supplier eight key questions to ensure they select a reputable, experienced and financially secure contractor:
1. Can you provide details of similar projects completed in the last 12 months? Always ask for evidence of recent previous work, case studies and references. This demonstrates competence, commitment, credibility and reassurance that it is the right type of company to deliver on your vision. 2. Can I see third party test certificates for the products you will be using on this project? This demonstrates compliance with BSEN 1176 and other relevant safety standards. 3. Can I have 3 customer references for projects you have delivered recently?
This will allow the buyer to talk to a third party about the supplier’s service delivery. 4. What added value can you bring to this project? This will enable the buyer to evaluate if there is something valuable that a supplier can provide in addition to creating your new play space, for example, carrying out a stakeholder consultation. 5. Can you include costs for an independent postinstallation inspection on completion? This will provide peace of mind by checking a site for flaws, fitting problems or safety hazards prior to children using it. Remember all play equipment requires regular inspection and maintenance. 6. What can I do if something goes wrong and I am dissatisfied with your performance? The API offers a free technical dispute mediation service to all clients buying from API member companies. 7. Can I see your annual certificate of API membership? This is the best way to ensure that all of the above issues are addressed. Companies stating that they are 'Founder members of the API' are not necessarily current members. Ask to see their current membership certificate and double check online or call the API office directly for confirmation. 8. Have you been credit-checked? Always undertake a credit check on any potential supplier and explore their trading history. Remember that ratings change over time. This is inexpensive and could save a lot of inconvenience and cost by ensuring a supplier is financially sound. The API monitors its members’ financial stability through rigorous credit checking and regular financial performance monitoring. Download the 2013 Directory of API Members at: http://www.apiplay.org/api-welcome For further information about the API, its members and how it can help support your play project, contact: Deborah Holt, tel: 024 7641 4999 ext. 208, email api@api-play.org www.api-play.org 7

Park News Park holiday homes open door to downsizing
Empty-nesters wanting to downsize and buy a dream holiday home, but who are grounded by the stagnant property market, are now being offered an instant get-out plan. It comes from major leisure group Park Holidays UK which can help couples part-exchange their house for a holiday lodge or caravan - with a guaranteed sum left to fund a new smaller home. The scheme, believes the group, will help spell an end to the frustration felt by many who have had to put their downsizing dreams on hold in the current slow-moving marketplace. Now such property owners can choose a holiday home from one of Park Holiday UK's 23 parks in Southern England with the certainty that their existing house will find a buyer. The purchaser will be one of the UK's largest house buying companies which will use valuations from local estate agents to establish a price which they will guarantee to pay. The homeowners can then set about finding a new smaller permanent house in addition to their holiday home, sure in the knowledge that the sale is secure and will not fall through. "Many couples tell us that they have found an ideal holiday home on one of our parks, but can't proceed until their property sells," said Park Holidays UK director Tony Clish. "Often their stories involve long frustrating months of unsuccessful marketing, even after the house has been reduced in price at least once. "This scheme entirely removes estate agents from the frame, and does away with the need to show people around your home as well as the
hassle of negotiating on lower offers. "Instead, a price is agreed and the completion date set for whatever suits the sellers best. They then take possession of two perfect properties in exchange for one major headache!" said Mr Clish. The price achieved for the home, he said, was typically around 90% of estate agents' estimates. However, added Mr Clish, such valuations are often considerably overoptimistic in order to win the instructions, and frequently bear little resemblance to the finally agreed selling price. Neither will sellers have to factor in thousands of pounds' worth of estate agents' fees - and can also avoid conveyancing costs by using the legal services provided free by purchasing company. The equity in many people's homes, says Mr Clish, allows amble latitude for buying a caravan holiday home or lodge as well as a more suitably sized bricks-and-mortar property. At Park Holidays UK, brand new two and three bedroom holiday homes start at under ÂŁ20,000. They are also fully equipped and furnished, removing another potential major expense. "Swapping a family house for a smaller home and a luxurious holiday bolt-hole on the coast can usher in a lifestyle that many people would envy," said Mr Clish. "With this scheme, it becomes an instant possibility - and means that couples will never again be rushing around with a vacuum and duster every time the estate agent calls!" he said. More information about the guaranteed property sales programme is available on the company's website at www.ParkHolidaysUK.com - or call 0843 178 7065.
Green grafters produce 400 trees from one branch! The equivalent of a small woodland has been planted by central England park owners in order to balance the books on carbon produced by their cars when attending branch meetings.
"That is the equivalent of seven years' worth of branch meetings!" said Mr Lloyd Jones, owner of Lickhill Manor Caravan Park in Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire.
More than 400 saplings are now flourishing on parks belonging to members of the Heart of England branch of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association.
Lickhill Manor is the holder of a number of top environmental awards, and has been praised by David Bellamy for the many wildlife-friendly initiatives in its 55 acres of grounds.
With each tree calculated to have a carbon offset value of around 255 miles, members are able to attend branch get-togethers knowing that their journeys have actually benefitted the environment.
The 423 trees planted under the scheme, said Mr Lloyd Jones, were in addition to the 1800 specimens planted by branch members in 2012 as part of their scheduled horticultural activity.
Inspiration for the scheme came last year after green issues were on the agenda at one of the branch's quarterly meetings, explained branch chairman Denis Lloyd Jones:
Species planted as part of the offset project include oak trees which, throughout their lifetime, will remove up to eight tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
"Many parks in the branch already hold the David Bellamy Conservation Award, and we all have taken measures to help protect the natural world in one way or another," he said.
Mr Lloyd Jones also points out that trees support a wide variety of wildlife, and are home to many small mammals, mosses, lichens, and also insects which are a food source for birds.
"It seemed logical, therefore, to find a way to ensure that our travel to meetings - and the journeys of our guest speakers - were not in any small way undoing our members' good work.
To mark the 400 tree landmark, a commemorative planting ceremony was organised recently by the branch at Woodside Lodges in Ledbury, Herefordshire with park owners Ken and Janet Davies.
"There was unanimous support for the idea of planting indigenous trees to counter our cars' carbon emissions, and in under a year we have offset more than a hundred thousand miles.
The new saplings at Woodside Lodges will join more than 600 indigenous hardwood trees planted at the park over the past two years by its family owners. Lickhill Manor

Trade News Fine pruning with ARS and Sorbus International
Somerset based Sorbus International Ltd. are the appointed exclusive UK distributors of the Japanese ARS range of high quality pruning equipment. Established in 1876, ARS produce high quality saws, secateurs, telescopic pruners, shears and loppers with the emphasis on the highest standard of steel production. “In the many years we have been supplying arboriculture and grounds maintenance equipment,” says Phil Wade, Sorbus’ Managing Director, “this is the first complete range of pruning tools we have come across that offers such high quality, coupled with ergonomic design and superb cutting ability. Yet it’s economic and durable and one we are proud to distribute in the UK.” The secret lies in a combination of impulse hardening techniques that create a remarkable hardness for the cutting blades, and hard chrome plating for rust proofing and durability. resin from sticking and accumulating on the blades. There are also products for fruit harvesting, flower arranging and handycraft uses. Sorbus International is a leading supplier of specialist and hi-tech equipment to the arboricultural, forestry, landscaping, utility, ground maintenance and environmental care sectors in the UK and worldwide. wimming pools are expensive and valuable assets, it makes sense to enable them to be used earlier and later in the season or throughout the year.
S
The fact that the “Great British Summer” has failed to make an appearance for the last few years makes putting them under cover them even more important. A pool is undoubtedly the campsites major attraction and is even more so if the pool is enclosed. When it comes to booking one of the questions most often asked of campsites is whether or not they have a covered pool. For camping enthusiasts who are naturally more inclined to put up with the vagaries of the weather, it’s reassuring to choose an establishment with a covered pool. It means guaranteed swimming 16
whatever the weather. It’s even more important for families, for whom it’s essential to have activities to keep the children occupied. A pool enclosure is also a strong argument in favour of offseason holidays. For any holiday park or campsite, a covered pool is a major source of attracting new customers and encouraging them to return in future years. With an enclosure an average 20% + increase in the occupancy rate was recorded by a French campsite survey. Lower financial investment less than 20% of a brick and mortar building Very importantly a pool building will- Take control of the weather – wind, rain and cold. - Ensure no cancellations due to bad weather. - Guarantee your daily timetable. - Provide safety. Access to the pool is controlled. It is inaccessible outside of opening and supervision times. - Reduce costs of heating, Even on dull days solar gain through the roof will provide free heat to the interior. - Reduce costs of cleaning, chemical usage and general maintenance
Although Arch enclosures supplies enclosures from 5m wide we are known for our larger enclosures up to 25m wide
(16ft – 82ft) and any length. To accommodate these larger widths we have five different structural arch designs. A great feature of an Arch enclosure is the special side panel between the arches which are sliding windows. These windows give you three opening and ventilation options; fully open 2m x 2m, half open 2m x 1m or a ventilation slot (in the middle) of 10cm x 2m wide. The windows are made up in two sections. This allows the top half to be opened separately to assist ventilation whilst keeping the lower half in situ to ensure small children and pets are kept away from the water. When both sections of the side panels are opened up, they slide open to a height of 2 meters, allowing easy access to the surrounding areas. The factory 10 year guarantee underpins its reliability and resistance to external constraints (wind, snow...). www.archenclosures.co.uk estellemichaels@gmail.com 01444 411 411
The logical Solution
Putting a pool under cover is a realistic and affordable solution to coping with unpredictable weather in all seasons. The product is factually better and more advanced than any other on the market; it offers more features and more flexibility of design. We offer a fixed price package: custom design, manufacture, construction and installation by factory engineers. The buildings have a ten-year factory guarantee.

Parks group urges industry to adopt new buyers charter
ark Holidays UK is urging other operators to join it in supporting a new national accreditation scheme for parks which sell caravan holiday homes and lodges.
P
Under the scheme, an official National Caravan Council (NCC) kitemark is awarded to parks which adopt a stringent new code of practice for treating customers fairly. The 23-strong group was among the first in Britain to qualify for NCC Approved Holiday Park status when the new official standard was announced this February. Now the park's director, Tony Clish, says he hopes that all UK parks selling caravan holiday homes will strive to gain similar recognition for their commitment to customer care. Park Holidays UK has been one of the principal champions of the accreditation scheme since it was first put forward as a way of providing extra assurances and safeguards to customers. The company also played an active part in drawing up its workings as a charter for fair play. To receive Approved Holidays Parks recognition, park businesses must agree to adopt a Consumer Code of Practice which is modelled on code guidelines from the Office of Fair Trading. The code spells out the ways in which parks will adhere to the principles of best practice both during the sale of a holiday home, and throughout the lifetime of a customer's ownership. One of its chief aims is to ensure that buyers of caravan holiday homes are able to make fully informed decisions 20
with which they will continue for be satisfied for years to come. The code also builds in additional safeguards for customers which go beyond the levels of consumer protection set out in law, and lays down new dispute resolution procedures. Administering the scheme is the NCC, the representative body of caravan manufacturers, which will also ensure parks' compliance with the code through an independent inspection process. Tony Clish says he hopes that the adoption of the scheme by major groups such as his will act as a clarion call for all members of the holiday home parks industry: "For the first time, this accreditation allows holiday home buyers to tell at a glance if a park has committed itself to the highest standards for dealing fairly with customers." he said. "We are delighted to be founder-members of the scheme, and have been working with the NCC to ensure that it offers an attractive set of undertakings for our customers. "Potential holiday home buyers will have the assurance that an approved park has been independently audited to a high level, and works to rigorous standards of customer service. "I am sure customers will welcome this development which we see as a very positive step to further strengthen the future of Britain's successful holiday home industry. "I am personally pleased to see this scheme being adopted as I have long been an advocate for a code of practice which all professional operators would be keen to embrace," added Tony.
