Youngsters join David Bellamy at Norfolk hide-away

V botanist David Bellamy swooped on a Norfolk holiday park recently to declare open a new bird hide - assisted by flocks of youngsters from the local primary school and Brownie pack.

T

Scene of the ceremony was Alderwood Lodges park near Diss which is celebrating the completion of its new hide on the banks of the Little Ooze. As well as making the first official "sighting" from the timberbuilt observation point, Professor Bellamy also acted as judge in a children's competition for the best bird-inspired drawing. More than 30 pupils of the village's Garboldisham primary school took part, along with local Brownies. The visit by David Bellamy came shortly after he presented his prestigious Gold Conservation Award to the family-owned park for the tenth year in succession. The green accolade recognises tourism businesses making exceptional efforts to protect the natural environment, and taking initiatives to support their indigenous plant, animal and bird life. For park owners Connie and Doug Atkins, and their daughter Leigh Mills and fiancé Peter, the honour comes at the start of what they hope will be another successful year for their small business. The park comprises three luxury lodges available for holiday lets in the nine acres of tranquil countryside which have been home to the Atkins family since 1948. According to Leigh, the family has always tried to apply the principles of sustainability to managing the park, and has taken a number of important steps to conserve its flora and fauna. 4

These have included the creation of a fertiliser-free wildflower meadow which attracts a wide range of butterflies, bees and other insects to the high nectar-bearing blooms. The family has also planted many indigenous trees and shrubs on the park which provide valuable nesting and feeding resources for the many species of resident and visiting birds. The new bird hide, built from felled leylandi trees, has been sited to provide views over both the river and parkland, and is equipped with identification charts and a book for recording sightings. Kingfishers, goldcrests, woodpeckers, jays, finches and herons are among the birds frequently spotted. According to Leigh Mills, the park has a special appeal to people wanting an entirely away-from-it-all holiday: "All the attractions at Alderwood Lodges are completely natural, and there's a real sense of having escaped day-to-day stresses for a much more peaceful way of life for a week or two," said Leigh. “It’s a great privilege to live and work in this beautiful part of Norfolk, and to be able to help preserve its special character with the support of someone like David Bellamy. "We are delighted both with our gold award, and that David took time out to officially open our new hide," added Leigh. Leigh's fiancé Peter, a builder specialising in church restoration, constructed the hide with expert guidance from village carpenter Ollie Jackson. More information about the park is available at www.alderwoodlodges.co.uk

‘FAMILY FUN’ is here to stay… and BATTERY RIDES are leading the way! he ever increasing numbers of leading leisure operators installing indoor battery rides tracks from World of Rides, has confirmed their absolute belief that the despite the continuing financial recession… ‘Family Fun’ is here to stay!

T

‘Families who play together…stay together’ was more than proven by the large number of owners and operators of Holiday Parks who moved their pollution-free World of Rides battery rides indoors during all the wet weather of 2012, and the early part of 2013, and as a result they were rewarded with continued high earnings throughout! These were the same owners and operators who had also bought their battery rides to put ‘All The Fun of The Fair’ back into their businesses, in order

to keep their holiday makers and visitors returning for more again and again… despite the very inclement UK weather! World of Rides coin-operated and pollutionfree ‘Parent & Child’ range of junior and adult battery rides are now established as the most popular and profitable choice that have re-filled the void of needing more family attractions, that can be played together, due to their constant high earnings… and the fastest return on investment in the entire pay-to-play children’s ride sector… although they can also be run on Free-Play for parties and promotions at the flick of a switch! New models, including the upgraded Formula One racing teams, and MOTO GP trikes, Off-Road Jeeps and the larger sized Quad Bikes, as well as their exciting Soft-Impact Bumper Cars and Bumper Boats have already emerged as top earners for 2013… with forward placed orders already outstripping those of last year! With both of this year’s FORMULA ONE and MOTO GP racing seasons now in full swing, and with all-major TV channel’s coverage of both racing series, this has ensured that millions

8

of younger children and their families continue to follow their favorite young drivers and riders on a daily basis… with the kind of total adoration normally reserved for leading film and music stars! In addition, the larger capacity drybatteries now last throughout a full working day, instead of needing to be changed every four hours… and they can also be safely recharged in-situ overnight without them ever needing to be removed from the rides… using their plug-in fully automatic battery chargers supplied with every ride! The new slot together portable track barriers means that a 6m x 12m track can installed either indoors or outdoors in under four hours! Battery rides always enjoy constant multi-use by children and their families, so their income levels are never dependant upon footfall alone, and neither are they weather dependant, as they can also be safely operated either indoors or outdoors… on any hard level surface, in order to keep visitors returning again and again for more! All their new rides can be seen in action on their website… www.worldofrides.com …or at the LIW Expo at the NEC 24th to 26th September 2013.

INTRODUCING HPM LIVE! ina Blanchard, MD of Maggi Media explains the concept behind HPM LIVE and why she feels the industry can benefit from such an event.

N

HPMM – So what is HPM LIVE? NINA - HPM Live is just a different and I think better way of buyers and suppliers getting to know each other. I have attended a lot of exhibitions and conferences over the years and they all seem just a bit random. There is a lot of waiting around, a fair bit of talking to people who you know are not interested in your products and they all seem to be getting more and more expensive. HPM LIVE will have a fixed number of buyers and suppliers all of whom will have been selected by us to match. Each will have a set number of face to face meetings with buyer or suppliers and will have a chance for a proper business discussion in comfortable surroundings. Outside of that will be a series of brakes, lunches and an evening reception and dinner where they will have further chance to socialise and get to meet the people they missed.

HPMM – And why have you launched it? NINA - Because the readers and advertisers of HPMM have asked for it. My job, for as long as I can remember, has been to put buyers and suppliers in touch with one another. That is fundamentally what HPMM does and this is just an extension to that service and one that my subscribers have asked for.

HPMM – So tell us exactly how it all works? NINA - We will personally invite and number of holiday park operators or owners that we know are interested in sourcing new, products or services or just finding a new supplier of something they already have. As part of the sign up process they tell us about their parks, what they are looking for, how much they are going to invest and the type of people they want to meet. We then go and invite a matching profile of manufacturers and suppliers who can present their products and services to the buyers in a series of one to one meetings. Each meeting will be 20 minutes long, each participant will have a schedule of preselected meetings and the opportunity to meet others in the networking sessions. No wasted time, no wasted conversations, only valuable discussions with people that best suit your needs.

HPMM – Who pays for all of this? NINA - The buyers are hosted i.e. their participation is free of charge. The suppliers pay a one of fee for participation which gives them access to the meetings, the social sessions and a range of promotional an communication activities before and after the event. This just seems totally logical to me. We are inviting the park operators to come and spend money so they shouldn’t have to pay for that privilege. I know I would be pretty peeved if I had to pay to go into a shop. As for the suppliers then it s a set fee which is a fraction of what it would cost to source, recruit, travel to and visit the parks and that’s assuming you could even get an appointment in the first place. On top of this you will have a night’s accommodation at a lovely hotel, all your food and drinks paid for and an evening’s entertainment and dinner included.

HPMM – What has the response been so far? Really exciting! We are still at the very early stages of organising the event but I have had very positive interest from nearly a dozen big parks operators and an equally strong level of interest from a wide range of suppliers.

HPMM – Finally when and where will HPM LIVE take place? NINA - The dates have been set for Thurs, 24th October 2013 so that it fits with the parks season and the time that operators are starting to think what they will need for the following year. The venue is the Moorland Garden Hotel in Yelverton, Devon which is a fantastic venue that has only recently been bought and refurbished by Sonia and Brian Meaden who are well known to many people in the parks industry, especially in the South West.

HPMM – And how do people apply for? NINA - Go to the HPMM website or just call me and we will get things sorted out. But be quick. This first event is going to be a very select gathering so we can ensure the right atmosphere and that everything will be perfect. So don’t delay, give me a call.

SALTEX HOLDS INTEREST FOR HOLIDAY HOME OWNERS For Robert Williams, a director of the Caerddaniel Holiday Home Park based in the Snowdonia National Park, a visit to this September’s SALTEX (Sports Amenity & Landscape Trade Exhibition) national show at Windsor racecourse is certainly on the cards after his experiences at last year’s event. “The show is great at enabling you to keep track of everything that’s happening in terms of product development. Our Holiday Home Park has extensive areas for camping as well as a sports/recreation field and a play area, and there was plenty of interest for me at SALTEX. “I went to last year’s event with a friend who has a smallholding – it was his first time at the show and he, too, found SALTEX an interesting and worthwhile experience.”

ALL-NEW SALTEX WEBSITE OFFERS VISITORS A YEAR-ROUND INDUSTRY RESOURCE SALTEX (Sports Amenity & Landscape Trade Exhibition) organiser Brintex has announced that the revamped SALTEX website (www.iogsaltex.com) offers visitors to the Windsor event a wealth of information on exhibitors and their products and services. The easy-to-use online resource will enable visitors to access company profiles of the expected 300 exhibitors along with product information, special deals, videos and instant links to companies’ social media.

toxic emissions; solvent, benzene, olefin and sulphur free; less smoke and smell; chemically inert and available as a ready mixed two-stroke fuel.

AVANT TECNO For the first time in the UK Avant Tecno will be demonstrating its new R-Series models which, unlike the rest of its well-established range of compact wheeled loaders, places the operator on the rear portion of the articulated chassis. The decision to introduce the R-Series was based on customer demand for a machine of similar configuration to other makes available and suitable for use in very confined areas where the new layout makes it easier to negotiate tight turns and reverse with both accuracy and safety. Like all Avant models, the new series feature a rigid articulation joint with the rear of the machine acting as a large counterweight for excellent on-site stability. The first two models available are the R28 and R35 which have similar specifications to the existing Avant 528 and 635 machines with power provided by Kubota diesel engines developing 21 and 28 kW, respectively and driving via hydrostatic, four-wheel drive transmissions. Compared with other makes of rear-seated loader, the Avant design offers a much more compact package with the additional benefit of a telescopic boom providing a maximum lifting height of up to 2,820 mm in the case of the R35. Also on show will be a variety of the very latest attachments from a total selection now well in excess of 100 different items.

“Event research has told us that visitors need more information in advance of SALTEX in order to better plan their time at the show,” says event director Jon Gibson. “Similarly, a large number of exhibitors have asked us to give them more preevent opportunities to promote themselves. The new fully-integrated website will satisfy both of those demands and will be a year-round industry resource.”

Lakeland park creates a buzz as bees log in uests at a top Lakeland holiday park are being asked to keep their eyes open for more than 7000 extra visitors winging their way to its grounds this year.

G

Skelwith Fold caravan park in Ambleside hopes that all the new arrivals will be "solitary bees", a species said by nature bodies to be under serious threat. An imaginative habitation project has seen the park create thousands of tiny timber tunnels bored in hardwood logs which are now positioned in piles throughout the grounds. According to park owner Henry Wild, Skelwith Fold's 130 acres are now a safe haven where the harmless, non-aggressive insects can be helped to re-build their numbers. The 7000 tunnels provide perfect homes in which solitary bees can make cells of nests for their larvae. With the bees keeping busy until late autumn, Henry hopes that park guests walking its woodland trails will report back on sightings which will confirm their nesting activity. Research into the declining bee population, he said, suggested that Skelwith Fold held three trump cards which favour it as a honeypot destination for the insects:

"We're fortunate here to have a great diversity of wild flowers which produce an abundance of the nectar and pollen which bees collect," said Henry. "Skelwith also has an ancient tarn which yields on its banks a ready supply of mud used by solitary bees as plaster to wall-up the cells in which they have left eggs and food. "But perhaps most significantly, we long ago declared Skelwith to be no-go zone for pesticides and insecticides of the type often blamed for bee loss. "We can now accommodate thousands of extra bees, and I hope we will also find some less common types from among the two hundred species known to exist," said Henry. Holiday guests are being asked to report via Twitter if they identify any comings and goings from the bees' new bijou timber homes. Skelwith Fold provides pitches for guests with touring caravans and motorhomes, plus caravan holiday homes for private owners. More information at www.Skelwith.com. 17

Stars of Cumbrian artisan food shine at free food night uniper-infused gin, chilli jam and ginger puddings - all made in Cumbria - were among a free feast of local produce served up by an Ambleside holiday park this week (Saturday 11 May).

J

The tantalising tastings at Skelwith Fold caravan park marked the start of a holiday year when guests will be encouraged to swap major supermarkets for Lakeland's fine food specialists. Suppliers from across the county were represented at the Saturday evening celebration which was attended by hundreds of holidaymakers at the 130-acre park. With many guests either owning holiday homes at the park, or visiting regularly in touring caravans or motorhomes, the business says it hopes to encourage a "shop local" habit. "We're certainly not anti-supermarket, but we did want to whet people's appetites with some culinary delights not normally found on the shelves of big stores," said park owner Henry Wild.

"Cumbria is a cornucopia of artisan food and drink products, and so we got together with many well-known and less familiar producers to stage a fine fare festival. "All the suppliers who attended said the reaction from holidaymakers was overwhelmingly positive, and many promised they would now be searching out their products in the future," added Henry. Guests' shopping lists are now likely to include local lines such as Langtons No 1 gin from Skiddaw, Higginsons pies from Grange, and sticky treats from the Hawkshead Pudding Company. Hundreds of other sweet and savoury foods, plus Lakeland beers and soft drinks from Cumbria, were also given a thumbs-up verdict from holidaymakers. Henry Wild said that some of the produce being tasted was available in Skelwith's park shop - but that the aim of the event was to try and spread the tourism pound further afield in Cumbria:

to be gained from giving their local supermarkets a miss. "They will enjoy some fantastic new taste experiences, and make their holiday even more like a perfect escape from the usual ingredients of everyday life," said Henry. To further encourage use of Cumbria's many micro-businesses, Skelwith Fold also offers regular visitors a discount card for use in local shops, restaurants, attractions and other outlets. More information about the park can be found at www.Skelwith.com.

"People often arrive at the park with provisions bought outside the county, so we wanted to show guests that there was plenty
