THE NEW GEODESIC DOMES OFFER BACK TO NATURE FEEL AT PERRAN SANDS HOLIDAY PARK lbion Canvas Co has recently supplied Yurts and Geodesic Domes to Perran Sands Holiday Park, Cornwall’s largest holiday park which opened in 1947. The 550 acre site has exceptional leisure facilities with indoor/outdoor pools, entertainment and clubs. The Yurts and Geodomes are in addition to existing traditional static caravans, chalets, Euro Tents and touring pitches and add a new style of holiday experience.

A

Nick Cook, Holiday Experience Manager at Perran Sands noted the rise in the trend for Glamping and felt that the stunning natural location (awarded a Gold Level David Bellamy Award) of the site lent itself perfectly to the back to nature with luxury style of accommodation. He commented, “Perran Sands likes to keep up to date with new, fresh holiday experiences. The yurts and Geodomes will help to broaden our traditional customer base and give us an opportunity to expand.” The Geodomes have been positioned next to the sand dunes where they blend seamlessly into the landscape. Whilst they appear rustic on the outside, inside the living is easy with wooden bases which have been carpeted, a fridge and cooker, plus a very comfortable double bed, two singles and a corner sofa that adds space for two more to sleep. There are lockable wood doors and a coloured serge inner roof lining. There is space for 6 people which offers great value with prices starting from £249 for a three night weekend

outside school holidays. At present Perran Sands is the only Haven park to have tried the accommodation. Cook reports that the response to the new style of Glamping accommodation has been excellent. At the end of the season he will conduct consumer research and may increase the offering in Cornwall and at other sites. Albion Canvas Co makes the canvas structures in their factory in Wellington, Somerset using canvas produced in the UK. The Geodomes are made and finished to the highest standards using a strong aluminium frame, with stress points having double and triple reinforcement where necessary and all seams sewn with a French seam for strength and superior water exclusion. The canvas is a 393gsm (12oz) cotton canvas, treated with a water repellent, rot inhibitor and fire retardant as standard. In addition to supplying the yurts and Geodomes, Albion Canvas Co designed the bases, installed the interiors and maintain all the equipment. IT’S FACT: IOG SALTEX VISITORS HAVE REAL BUYING POWER! IOG SALTEX continues to attract influential buyers and decisionmakers from the turf and open space management industry, with nearly three-quarters (72 per cent) of the 9,267 visitors to last year’s show having responsibility for specifying products and services. Indeed, 32 per cent of visitors were from organisations that spend up to £50,000 a year on products and services, 19 per cent from firms that spend between £50K and half a million pounds a year, and over 13 per cent had budgets above £500,000. In addition, the independent research by Vivid Interface also states that 81 per cent of visitors with purchasing power said IOG SALTEX influenced their decision to find a new product/supplier or to place an order that they would not have placed if they had not visited the event at Windsor. The research also showed that, in an average month, 37 per cent of visitors involved in purchasing do not see any non-supplier sales representatives and 12 per cent see only one, while 38 per cent were likely to ask for a quote while at the show. IOG SALTEX MEETS COUNTRY PARK’S LEISURE NEEDS IN A BUSINESS-LIKE FASHION “IOG SALTEX is a great place for me and my team to keep up-todate with the latest equipment and tools for open space management, and to see a range

of demonstrations of the machines in action. It’s also a great networking and social venue where we renew acquaintances with old friends, as well as dealers and distributors.” So says Bob Abel, Grounds Manager at Vision RCL (Redbridge Culture & Leisure) which operates and manages a wide range of services for Redbridge Council. This includes a 400-acre country park where he is charged with the management and maintenance of two golf courses, play areas, cycle tracks and gym areas, for example, as well as athletics facilities, plus boulder climbing and tracks/courses for orienteering. IOG SALTEX 2012 (www.iogsaltex.co.uk) will be held on September 4-6 at Windsor Racecourse, Berks, and will embrace fine turf and sports surfaces, turf maintenance equipment, children’s outdoor play and safety surfacing, landscaping, contractors, commercial vehicles, outdoor leisure and facilities management, as well as software and security equipment. The show is attended by open space management professionals and contractors – from groundsmen and greenkeepers through to play officers, architects, designers and surveyors as well as local authority and outdoor leisure facility managers. “I usually go to the show (this year, Windsor Racecourse, September 4-6) with team members – four of us went last year – and while we have a ‘niceto-have’ list of machines, equipment and tools for potential purchase, once we have seen what we like we normally arrange demos before we buy.

“I’ve been going to IOG SALTEX for over 20 years, and I’ve always enjoyed and benefited from the show.” AN OLYMPIC HERITAGE 19081948-2012 THE EVOLUTION OF TURFCARE MACHINERY A special display of turf machinery, tools and artefacts from the years 1908 and 1948 is being staged alongside their 2012 counterparts at this year’s IOG SALTEX open space management show (Windsor, September 4-6) to commemorate the historic olympic events – and perhaps to jolt a few memories for some visitors! Working closely with the Hall & Duck Trust – an international collection of 1,000 lawn mowers dating from the 1850s, plus home to an extensive material archive – IOG SALTEX will provide visitors with a range of mechanised and pedestrian-controlled machinery and tools, as well as a selection of interesting artefacts, photos and posters. Included in the display will be a rare Ransomes 30 inch Patent Motor Mower of 1907(a pedestrian machine), the like of which would have been used in 1908 for the Olympic events. The original owner was Somerset County Cricket Club and the machine is still in running order. The aim of the display is to show comparative equipment from each of the years when the event was held in London, illustrating how the industry has changed over the 104-year period. Members of the Trust will be available for discussion. Visit www.hdtrust.co.uk for more details. 13

SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS

ordingbridge help Paultons Park create a large covered seating area.

F

In 2012 Fordingbridge were delighted to design and install a large canopy at Paultons Park in the New Forest. Our client wanted to create an extensive covered picnic area next to concession kiosks to keep guests under cover whatever the weather. Due to the scale of the project Fordingbridge designed a multi span barrel vault timber canopy covering 441 metres squared. The structure consists of three 7 metre spans, 21 metres long. The canopy is clad in a fire retardant Opal 60 fabric; this fabric allows high light penetration while providing good UV protection. Our canopies and walkways are ideal for amusement parks and holiday centres. At Fordingbridge we are passionate about helping our clients provide the best environment for their guests. Our timber, steel or tensile fabric canopies can be used to create covered seating area, keep waiting queues under cover, or provide sheltered play spaces. We work with our clients to create standard or bespoke solutions tailored to your needs.

Sustainable Buildings As well as providing a wide range of canopies and walkways Fordingbridge also specialise in creating practical, energy and cost effective buildings which are intrinsically sustainable and are available at an affordable price. We offer a full design and build service taking your project from design, to build, to completion on site. Our buildings, constructed using a tried and tested construction method, with standardised components manufactured off site are an ideal alternative to ‘temporary’ or traditional buildings.

T

Holiday parks set to court single parents he Best of British holiday parks group is launching a summer campaign to woo single parents. It says that for single mums and dads going away with children, holiday parks tick all the boxes which are left blank by hotels, guest houses and rented cottages. The 50-strong group of independent holiday parks believes that for many singles, the biggest holiday headache is trying to keep youngsters amused without straining the budget.

T

"The dread question of "what can we do now?" is often the trigger for going out and spending more money," says BOB chairman Claire Jeavons. "But on a holiday park, that issue just doesn't arise. Children are often straining at the leash each day to explore the grounds, enjoy the inclusive activities, and meet other youngsters. "Children are naturally gregarious, much more so than most grown-ups, and will often strike up friendships with other children at the drop of a hat," added Ms Jeavons. Many single parents, she says, accuse hotels and cottages of producing a sense of isolation which is met by getting in a car and heading off somewhere different each day. But by keeping the holiday focussed on the park, Ms Jeavons comments, it's less stress for everyone - and single parents themselves sometimes form impromptu communities during their stay. 20

As well as saving on the cost of constantly seeking out entertainment, BOB points out, parks also provide much more affordable accommodation. Rented holiday caravans and lodges offer excellent value, and don't impose any surcharges for under-occupancy. Or there is the option of taking a tent to keep costs to a real minimum. Parks in membership of BOB, most of which are family owned and with top tourist board gradings, offer a variety of inclusive attractions depending on the preferred style of holiday. Some have features such as swimming pools, children's clubs and nightly entertainment - all included in the price - with an on-park shop and cafe, bar or restaurant. Others offer simply peaceful surroundings with attractive grounds to explore, sometimes in easy walking distance to a beach or countryside trails. "Single parents often say that they feel most relaxed when they know that children are happy, engaged and safe, and a holiday park provides exactly the right setting," says Ms Jeavons. "Almost all of our parks' single parent bookings are repeat visitors, or are made as a result of a recommendation from another mum or dad who has stayed there. "Unlike hotels, parks are created purely for pleasure - and we've yet to hear anyone complain that they miss the mini-bar, trouser press or conference facilities!" she added. More information, and an interactive map of park locations and facilities, can be found on-line at www.Bob.org.uk. A free brochure can also be requested from the website.

Trade News The long and the short of it ong or short grass is no problem for the Wessex ProLine STC flail collector. It's fitted with a large diameter steel drum rotor, featuring four rows of closely spaced flails, and two rows of draft paddles to create the suction for collecting the grass. Because the STC has no narrow throat, as do many collectors, long or short grass will be collected efficiently without blocking, even in wet conditions, which makes it ideal for long grass applications i.e, end of season clearance of wild flower meadows or golf course rough. Not only that, the STC leaves a fine finish on short turf as well.

L

The ProLine STC comes in 1.2m and 1.8m working widths and is semi-mounted to the tractor to allow the brush to follow the ground contours in work, and then be lifted out of work for transport. As the whole machine is not lifted on the linkage, the STC can be operated behind a small tractor with limited lifting capacity. The machine runs on its own four wheels, totally independent of the tractor. The front wheels are fully castoring and are re-positioned by a simple pin mechanism to adjust the working height, whilst the two rear wheels have flotation tyres to keep turf compaction to a minimum. Power is transmitted from the tractor through a heavy cast gearbox and belt drive to the rotor. The STC collector series is an all-year- round machine and ideal for various applications in its different modes. As well as cutting & collecting the golf course rough with the verti-cutting knived fitted, you can use it to scarify a sports pitch and by fitting the brush rotor large areas of fallen autumn leaves can be collected.
