Dear All at Campsmount Thank you for taking the time to read this new edition of Campsmount News. I hope that you will see numerous examples of why I feel very proud to be the Headteacher here at Campsmount. I join the Academy at a very exciting time in its development as we both reflect on what has gone before and look forward to our next challenge and future success. The Eurovision Dance Contest in March demonstrated the talent we have both at Campsmount and our linked schools as well as the dedication and commitment of students, staff and parents. I have enjoyed meeting many parents at our parent’s evenings and hearing from students about the extensive range of wider learning opportunities they have at the Academy. As you are aware last term we had a visit from Ofsted and you will have received a letter outlining how you can access this report via our website. The report, whilst highlighting some key areas for improvement, does comment on the strengths of the Academy, in particular the behaviour and safety of our students. The summer term gives me the opportunity to meet many more students, parents, staff and governors and to work together to develop our Academy further. This term is a very busy and important one as our Year 11 students complete their GCSE’s and then move into our sixth form. The Year 13 students complete their A-levels (or equivalent) and move on to University or into working life. The results days in August are always a highlight in any teacher’s year as we see the delight of students opening their results and being rewarded for their hard work. It is a real privilege to be the Headteacher at Campsmount and have the opportunity to support our young people to become outstanding members of our community. I hope you enjoy the articles about our students and I look forward to talking to you about their excellent achievements.

Best wishes

Florida Netball Tour 2014

Eurovision Dance Show 2014

Throughout our tour we all came together and supported each other, we had some fantastic experiences and moments we will remember forever. Even the bus journeys were entertaining with lots of singing and music on our ‘party bus’. Our first day was spent on Miami Beach, it was amazing and it was boiling hot! We had a great time on the nicest beach we had ever seen. The following day we visited the Everglades where we had an airboat ride to see wild alligators and some of the girls were even brave enough to hold a rescued baby alligator. We had some highly competitive netball matches but even though both squads were unsuccessful it didn’t stop us having a good time. After travelling from Miami to Orlando we enjoyed three brilliant days visiting Universal, Wet & Wild and Disney theme parks. We went on some fantastic rides, getting soaking wet and met Pluto and Goofy. It was incredible. Our last hours in Florida we spent at the Mall at Millenia. This was our last chance to buy gifts and souvenirs for our friends and family. We only had a short amount of time before we had to get on the road to get back to Miami. It was a disappointment to leave Florida. Everyone agreed that it was an amazing experience and thanked Mrs Knowland, Miss Lindley and Miss O’Grady for making it possible. This year’s dance show took place on Wednesday 19th March and was the biggest and best we have seen at Campsmount. We had a record high 178 performers taking part. The night was a great success with some amazing dance being showcased from Campsmount students and our fantastic junior schools; Norton Juniors, Kirk Smeaton and Askern Spa Juniors. It also saw for the first time a fantastic opening performance from all 4 Infant feeder schools Askern Littlemoor Children’s Centre, Askern Moss Road, Kirk Smeaton and Norton Infants and this was very cleverly choreographed to four different movies from Disney. In the end it was an extremely close competition and it went down to the last judge to decide the winning country. It was a battle between the Campsmount girls performing to Pitch Perfect representing the country Cyprus, which was fantastic as this was actually the girls own choreography and Kirk Smeaton performing to Mission Impossible representing Ireland. However for the third year running a junior school took the title and stole the show and they beat Campsmount to take the title again. They had obviously worked extremely hard alongside their choreographer Sue Brierley to produce a brilliant number and their interpretation of the movie was amazing. The winning dance group from Kirk Smeaton will now enjoy a fantastic day out at Doncaster College, later in the year. The children will take part in three very different dance sessions, where they will be taught dance techniques within that genre of dance to then perform at the end of the session. We now have extremely successful street dance and cheerleading clubs that have high numbers of representation across the school years. This is largely down to the commitment of the students and teachers involved as well as our amazing dance teacher Bekki Dyas who never fails to inspire the students with creative and challenging dance routines. Dance at Campsmount and in our feeder schools grows year on year. A big thank you must go to all staff who took part on the night and all the staff and students behind the scenes who worked extremely hard to make this year’s Eurovision Dance Contest the best one yet, We thought last years could not be beaten, however it keeps happening year on year. Well done to all students involved!

Le Corbier Easter 2014 Campsmount holds an excellent record of successful ski trips and over the years, we have visited numerous countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Austria and France. France is where we returned for the fourth consecutive year to ski in the beautiful resort of Le Corbier in the Alps. We still had plenty of snow with the added bonus of glorious weather and stunning spring scenery; we saw deers and marmots and the views from the top of the mountain were simply breath taking. Once again our students impressed everyone around with their impeccable politeness and behaviour as well as their willingness to speak as much French as they could. Our instructors congratulated every single member of the group for their dedication, hard work and achievement. All the staff were very proud of their positive attitude and their progress.

New York February 2014 In February of this year, the Business Studies department took students from Y11-Y13 to Manhattan, New York. I’m proud to say that it was the ninth time that Campsmount has taken students to the Big Apple since 2001. Once again the itinerary was one that provided envy to everyone back home. Battling the biting wintery conditions, the students visited Lady Liberty, The Empire State, Wall Street, Times Square and The Yankees Stadium to name a few. While some were being rocked on Broadway taking in ‘We Will Rock You’, others were being dazzled by some of the NBA’s best, watching The Knicks being out-dunked by The Golden Gate Warriors at Madison Square Garden. It might sound like it was all play and no work? Well, we changed our pounds into dollars......there’s a bit of business for you all!

France Football Easter 2014 - 6 games, 6 wins! Campsmount claim 100% win record on tour for the first time ever! On Saturday 12th April, 42 pupils and 6 members of staff embarked on what would be remembered as a notorious part of Campsmount history. It was an early start, making our way down to Dover for our ferry to Calais in order to get to Lille in time for one of the biggest games of their season, the local derby against Valenciennes. We arrived slightly after kick off but just in time to see Lille claim a 1-0 victory that virtually sealed their Champions League spot for next season. The stadium and the atmosphere were amazing and the kids loved it. On Sunday it was the opportunity for Campsmount to make their mark in Europe. We travelled over an hour to play 3 games against a local French team. The facilities and the quality of the pitches were a footballers dream and we certainly made the most of it. All 3 teams came out with victories with the most impressive performance from our Year 8 team who ran out 6-0 winners. The goal of the day would have to go to Marcus Goodwin for the Year 9 and 10 team with his lob over the goalkeeper from 25 yards with the outside of his right boot. After 3 hard fought games it was time for some relaxation with a trip to Bruges and then finishing the evening with some basketball and extremely competitive Table Tennis (especially amongst the staff). Monday came and we had some very tired but still very excited young people. A trip to the local theme park in the glorious Belgian sunshine was excellent preparation for our 2nd and final game of the tour. The Year 8 team started things off with another 5-0 victory over their French counterparts with an excellent team performance. The Year 9 and 10 team then continued our impressive run of form with two late goals to seal a 2-1 victory. It was then left to the Year 11’s to complete what would be a memorable trip, with no previous Campsmount squad in twelve years completing a clean sweep of victories on a football tour. The game was a tense affair with some excellent football that went from end to end. Campsmount managed to pull off a well-deserved and hard fought victory to complete a piece of Campsmount tour history. Our tour organiser, Matthew, also said that it was the first time in 8 years that he had run a tour and a school had won all of their fixtures. Both staff and pupils extremely enjoyed their trip away and cannot wait for the next one. Well done boys, you did Campsmount proud.
