FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR Romayne Eaker-Kelly Director of Campus Recreation and Health Promotion

Hello everyone! It is difficult for me to grasp that the semester is ending. It just seems as though we returned from break yesterday. With the time passing so rapidly, I must take this opportunity to say thank you to all of you that worked hard and supported the University to keep everyone safe and healthy here at the SRC. I know that asking your peers to mask up or download Hawk Check had many challenges and may have caused you to be frustrated or even consider leaving us, but you are a better, stronger leader having been given the experience. THANK YOU for working with us; it has been an absolute pleasure getting to know so many of you. Seniors, as you approach graduation, I want to say you are ready!!! MY FAVORITE HP MOMENTS Cassidy Walsh Office of Health Promotion Student Leader

As this semester and my two years at Montclair draw to a close, I am lucky enough to be able to reflect fondly on my time here. Within the Office of Health Promotion, I was able to discover my passions in the field of Public Health, push myself in leadership and team roles, and forge friendships that will last long after my time at Montclair. It was an amazing opportunity to help bring life back to campus after the struggle of COVID, and I will take the skills I’ve learned into my professional career in order to better help and educate others. I am so grateful for this place and the team that I’ve worked with, and I couldn’t feel more prepared and optimistic about my future as a Public Health professional! Thank you for everything, please enjoy some highlights and favorite moments from my time in Health Promotion!

How to play: guess the phrases being represented by the following clues. Get creative! The answers can be found flipped at the bottom of the page.

I never was but always will be. No one ever saw me but everyone knows I exist. I give people the motivation to better themselves every day. What am I? One night, a man receives a call from the Police. The Police tell the man that his wife was murdered, and that he should reach the crime scene as soon as possible. The man drops the phone, shocked, and drives 20 minutes to the crime scene. As soon as the man reaches the crime scene, the Police arrest him, and he is convicted of the murder. How did the Police know he committed the crime? A father and son were driving along a dark road. Unfortunately, they got in a one car accident. The father was killed on impact, while the son was transported to the hospital for immediate surgery. The surgeon came out and saw the person and said, “ I can’t do the operation because he’s my son”. Who is the surgeon? Dad Jokes: What do you call a man without a body and a nose? What do you call an American bee? What do you call a cute door? What do you call a funny group of cows?

RANDOM RAMBLINGS: THE GAUNTLET OF DEVOTION David Bryngil Associate Director of Campus Recreation and Health Promotion

In an interview following Will Smith’s now infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars, comedian Jim Carrey used a fascinating phrase. In commenting on what recently transpired at the Oscars, Carrey said, “A lot of people worked really hard to get to that place and to have their moment in the sun, to get their award for the really hard work they did. It is no mean feat to go through all the stuff you have to go through when you’re nominated for an Oscar. It’s a gauntlet of devotion that you have to do.” It is when I heard that phrase, “gauntlet of devotion”, I was struck (not physically like Chris Rock!) by the power of those words. Carrey’s description of the process people labor through to achieve excellence is spot on. Whether you are an artist, athlete, scientist, student, etc., the only way to truly achieve greatness in your field is to pass through a “gauntlet of devotion.” Success is not easy to achieve. It does not matter if you are a student in a classroom or a professional working in any field. Fundamentally speaking, it takes hard work, unwavering dedication, and passion to rise above mediocrity and achieve success. And for that select handful of human beings who achieve greatness in their chosen field, it is the combination of these aforementioned

BRIE’S BAKING CORNER: MINI COOKIE CAKES Active Time: 75 Minutes Makes about 24 mini cookie cakes, made in a mini cupcake tray, but can also be made in a regular cupcake tray. Brie Krug Coordinator of Evening Events and Facilities

One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to take baking and cooking classes. I’ve taken quite a few with my favorite chef, Tracy Wilk, in the city at the Institute of Culinary Education. Tracy has taught me how to make pasta, chocolate cupcakes, crepes, lemon cookies, and more. During the peak of the pandemic, Tracy started a trend called “Bake It Forward.” When NYC shut down, Chef Tracy started baking out of her tiny New York apartment and donating all her baked goods to frontline healthcare staff at New York hospitals. The trend spread across the country with others baking and donating (including myself) and out of it was born her cookbook, “Bake It Forward.” A cookbook that my photo and name are published in! In the summer of 2020, I became a recipe tester for Chef Tracy’s new book. I got sneak peeks at her recipes, baked them in my own kitchen, sampled them, and gave feedback to improve the recipes. This is one of my favorite experiences with Chef Tracy and now I can say that I am in a cookbook. The recipe below is for mini cookie cakes. Think cookies in the shape of a cupcake, topped with buttercream frosting. The perfect two-bite snack! I highly encourage you to give them a try! Maybe try baking them for donation to local healthcare workers and really “Bake It Forward!” Or bake them for your favorite graduating senior as a celebration! Or bake them for yourself to celebrate your hard work this year! If you are interested in other recipes from Chef Tracy Wilk, she has her book listed on her website! If you look in the back you might even find my photo!
