Ringing In

The New Year!

h, a new year and for many, a fresh new start. There’s always something about a blank calendar that makes a person want to start committing to resolutions, making plans, and mapping out goals. This year, we’re kicking off our January edition of Campus Plus with the heavy weighted debate of whether or not the Gen Y is ready for the workforce. Before you think, “Oh, but I’m only a first year/foundation year student so this doesn’t apply to me”, think again. Because as long as you are on your way to scoring that branded degree and if you’re mapping out goals, this (pages 38 till 43) has got everything to do with you. You know what else comes with a brand new year? The Lunar New Year celebration! Have you started making plans? Are you ready to get festive in shades of crimson? We “Paint It Red!” with our fashion picks for both females and males in our “Fashion Trend” (pages 28 and 29) and “Guys’ Stuff” (pages 34 and 35). And that sorts out “moving forward”. Now, what about looking back? We spoke to students in our Campus Talk section (page 55) and asked them what they would’ve done differently in 2013 if they were given the opportunity (and magical powers, perhaps) to go back in time. It’s what we’d like to call, “reversed resolutions”. We’ve also decided to bring you back to the times of “way back when” with favourite local dishes that some of you grew up to and have grown to love. So much so that it tops your “To Eat” list and is usually the first thing you must have on going home for the holidays. How many of you can relate to the “Hometown Favourites” on pages 68 and 69? Campus Plus magazine has come a long and far away since 2006, and we have only our readers to thank for their continuous support. In an effort to continue to improve ourselves (just for you guys!), this month, we’ve reached yet another milestone with the launch of the Campus Plus Interactive Digital Magazine, where we continue to curate the best of our content, coupled with interactive content such as pictures, videos, and the occasional contest or two. If anyone is wondering what material will make a fashion statement after cotton, leather, nylon, polyester and fur – think rubber. Fans of Catwoman’s skin-tight, blazingly shiny outfit may be surprised to learn that it was made from rubber material. In fact, more manufacturers today are turning to rubber to make a variety of clothing, including dresses, leggings, and bodysuits. The trend for rubber clothes started in Europe and is now broadening its reach to America’s fashion avant-garde. Maybe that was the cue for 16 students from Saito College to create fashion designs from an array of rubber products for the Rubber Wonderland event organised by Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry. The wrinkle-free clothes created from rubber products, including gloves, latex threads, rubber bands, condoms, and o’rings held the audience captive with eye-popping designs by students from Saito College for this inaugural event. The Rubber Wonderland event was one of the premier events held in conjunction with the Malaysian International Commodity Conference and Showcase.

Focusing on the competition theme of “Re:Think. Re:Create.”, Abdullah Mustaffar Razali from Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah and Heah Chee Shean from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology emerged gold winners in the Architecture and Interior Design categories in the Nippon Paint Young Designer Award 2013 (“NPYDA 2013”). The NPYDA is a regional competition held in eight countries - Malaysia, Singapore, China, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan. This year saw a record of 2,033 entries, more than double of the total of 870 entries received in 2012. The gold winners in Malaysia walked away with RM3,000 in cash and will be heading to Japan in March, together with other gold winners in the region. The learning trip to Japan will give the winners an opportunity to meet renowned architects and interior designers with the likes of Takeshi Sugimoto (Super Potato) and Sadao Tsuchiya (MUJI) from Japan in addition to those from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. Upping Anti-Bullying Awareness After a month-long effort of tirelessly developing an impactful and creative message towards antibullying, the ‘Monster High™ & Limkokwing Against Bullying Competition’ came to a spook-tacular finale, as they crowned Team Alpha, as the grand prize winner. Team Alpha beat over 100 other creative entries from Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) for the honour. The submissions came in the form of songs, videos, T-shirts and posters, all carrying the same simple but powerful message that will help create anti-bullying awareness: “Be Yourself. Be Unique. Be A Monster.” Team Alpha received a host of prizes including a Certificate of Achievement and Monster High merchandise worth RM500. The entries were judged by Miss Universe Malaysia 2010 Nadine Ann Thomas, Kelly Yip, Datuk Tiffanee Marie Lim; Editor of R.AGE and Initiator of R.AGE Against Bullying Campaign, Ian Yee, and award-winning songwriter and vocal coach of stART Society, Grace Sng. IACT Mental Health Awareness Week Hands-on learning is prevalent when it comes to getting an education from IACT College. Event Planning and Project Management is part of the Diploma in Advertising course, and since IACT College prides itself in PBL, the students of the 2011 June batch launched their own event. The final semester students call themselves Positive Blu Communication. They chose this affair because it is a growing issue that lacks awareness among today’s generation even though it is most common among them. The event kicked off with a short speech by the Project Manager and IACT College’s Academic Director Nicholas Lee who, along with Aries Low, and Kok Wye Mun, each pricked their respective balloons with troubled faces to symbolise expelling one’s innerdemons. The audience was then treated to light refreshments. While doing so, they could also check their level of stress using the programmes on the computers provided. The third part of the event was shocking but tastefully done. The boys from Training Ground Martial Arts & Fitness performed a few demonstrations on the different types of martial arts that help you release tension. Positive Blu’s objective is to encourage youth to be mentally healthy and able to deal with stress and the venue suits the objective of Positive Blu as well.

UCSI hosts biggest Chinese delegation to Malaysia in the last decade UCSI University (UCSI) had the honour of being the sole university in Malaysia to host the Seminar on the Higher Education System in the People’s Republic of China. The seminar saw delegates from 34 tertiary education institutions from all over China introduce their respective institutions and discuss potential academic collaborations with UCSI. The seminar was organised by the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), a corporate body affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education, which specialises in the scholarly exchange of students from and to China. “As UCSI has a high level of successful internationalisation [activities/initiatives], our delegation came to learn from it, not only from the academic aspect but also regarding quality assurance practices,” said Mr Gong Wan, CSCSE, deputy director general. He added that with more than 70 participants, the delegation was the largest from China to visit Malaysia in the last decade, underscoring the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries that was further reaffirmed with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Malaysia in October this year.

Taylor’s 6th Teaching And Learning Conference

Taylor’s University recently organised its 6th Teaching and Learning Conference 2013 (TTLC 2013) in partnership with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). The conference gathered about 150 local and international education experts with 76 research papers presented on various teaching and learning topics. TTLC 2013 is aimed at promoting the sharing of knowledge and experience, engagement and collaboration among educators, researchers and practitioners in transformative teaching and learning. During the conference, experts submitted research papers to address three different themes – Technology Integrated in Teaching and Learning; Pedagogy learning, Teaching Methodologies and Assessment; and Global Issues and Researches in Higher Education. The conference’s three main themes comprised 47 different sub-themes ranging from digital learning, web tools, values or character education, to current and global issues in higher education. The official opening ceremony of TTLC 2013 was followed by a tour of Taylor’s University’s New Collaborative Classroom known as Taylor’s X-Space. The uniquely structured classroom is part of the university’s effort to introduce a blended learning approach, enhancing the campus’ learning environment.

Germany Stint Brings New Dimension to

Learning for INTI Student

As one of the world’s largest economies with a rich cultural and political history and a very high standard of living, Germany has always held special appeal for Sara Gan Jia Yi. The second-year mass communication student at INTI International University recently seized the opportunity to extend her learning experience at the Business and Information Technology School (BiTS) in Iserlohn, Germany, made possible through INTI’s Semester Abroad Programme (SAP). UCSI Students Clinch 13 Prizes At

Design Competition

A group of Interior Architecture students from UCSI University recently swept 13 prizes at the 17th MIID Interior Design Competition. Organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers, the annual competition aims to nurture creativity and motivate healthy competition in interior design through transformational activities. Themed, “Re-invent”, the national competition saw UCSI students bag first and second place in Residential Design and Commercial Design; first place in Hospitality Design, Installation Design and Performance; and another six awards in other categories such as furniture design, photography, and sketching, among others. 45 of them – from UCSI’s School of Architecture and Built Environment – banded together to net the multiple wins; notably the biggest haul in the School’s history. Final-year students Morteza Bozorgi and Edward Gan – were ecstatic about their wins. Working along their given “think-inside-the-box” - theme, the team created a wooden structure with an internal rotating gear, fully made from recycled materials, which drew inspiration from teamwork and automotive systems. While the unique structure stole the limelight from other participating competitors, it was but one of the school’s many exceptional creations. 12

IT’s an open innovation challenge to bring together ideas on clean and energy-efficient solutions that promote sustainability and deliver cost savings for residential, commercial and industrial developments. Called the GE (General Electric) University Challenge Malaysia, it’s a colllaborative effort between GE and AgensiInovasi Malaysia (“AIM”). Open to undergraduate engineering and business students from public and private universities across Malaysia, the challenge is a component of GE’s open innovation strategy. This is where the company looks beyond its four walls to crowd source for ideas from the public such as universities and academia, which are hotbeds for innovation. The 2013 winner is Team JYJY from University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, winning RM3,000, with a chance to do an internship with GE Malaysia as well as ‘job shadow’ a GE leader for one day. The first runner-up, Team Energive from Universiti Teknologi Petronas and second runner-up, Team Silent Assassins from Universiti Putra Malaysia walked away with RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively.

Sunway Education Group (Sunway Ed) is providing opportunities for students to do good for the community following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing with the Reading Bus Club (RBC). Under the collaboration, RBC will train the volunteers on the Reading Bus Programme while Sunway Ed sponsors the project. Sunway Ed has been actively encouraging its students to contribute to the community, especially to those from disadvantaged backgrounds. According to Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group, this project will further enhance the involvement of institutions under the Sunway Education Group, namely Sunway University, Sunway College, Monash University Sunway Campus, Sunway Le Cordon Bleu Institute of Culinary Arts and Sunway International School in serving the community in under-developed areas. This community outreach, under the Moral Education and General Studies subjects was initiated by Lee Aun Nee, Acting Head of Sunway Ed’s MOHE General Studies Department. Under the project, volunteer students from Sunway Ed will be visiting six Tamil primary schools in Pahang, beginning January 2014. Volunteers will be visiting each school twice – first to launch the programme and second to follow-up on the progress of the children’s reading skills.

Bomberman Challenge For A Good Cause

Yahoo-MAS Cili Padi Awards 2013 attracted a record 265 entries catapulting 22-year-old duo of Soo Wei Wen and Nicholas Chin, as Team “Sly”, to glory as the winners of the inaugural competition. Short Films “Tiger” and “Life” were right at the heels of “Sly” coming in second and third respectively; separated by very narrow margins. “Tiger” was produced by four friends – Toh Jia Voon, 25, Chia Sheng Wei, 24, Ong Jun Tien, 24 and Cheng Wei Heng, 22 while “Life” was created by Dan Khoo. Films were judged on the basis of four criteria – presentation of the core concept, quality of content, originality of the idea and its presentation and creativity. Judges allocated scores from 1 to 10 to each criterion. Collation of the number of cumulative scores helped the panel arrive at the total number of marks for each contestant and the winners. The winner takes home RM20,000 with the second and third-place finishers receiving RM12,000 and RM8,000 respectively. In addition, the winner will get an internship at leading Malaysian Production Company, KRU Studios and the top three winners’ films will be aired nationwide for a period of three weeks.

A group of 11 creative and innovative UTAR students organised a fun-filled and exciting challenge known as “Rev Up Bomberman Challenge 2013” in November 2013 at Student Pavilion II, UTAR Perak Campus. The group known as Team DF, which stands for “Da Family” was recently selected as one the 16 finalists from over 40 shortlisted entries from institutions of higher learning all over the country in a competition known as ‘The Master of Rev Up’. Organised by Revive Isotonic, the competition had initially attracted more than 2000 entries before the 40 best entries were shortlisted. As one of the finalist teams with the best “Rev’d Up” ideas, Team DF had since been sent to a boot camp where they received RM5,000 and given two months to execute their plan. The two-day Bomberman Challenge organised by Team DF tested the intelligence and wits of the participants. The event had successfully attracted more than 300 UTAR students joining in the fun and excitement. During the closing ceremony of Rev Up Bomberman Challenge 2013, Team DF donated RM1000 from the registration fee collected from the participating students/teams to the Kampar Basketball Association for restoration and repair of the Kampar old town basketball court. Frontera Sol of Mexico, a Tex-Mex restaurant in Petaling Jaya, re-launched its image and menu by hosting a private media event, with VIPs present. This project was organised by final-year Mass Communication students from IACT College. The students wanted to captivate the audiences by not only providing them with food but a fashion show with many local fashion designers who’ve recently graduated from design schools. The fashion runway was both unusual yet apt and kept the photographers snap-happy. Items like the Mini Shredded Chicken Burrito, Mini Prawn Chimichanga & Pico de Gallo were the tempting starters, followed a choice between Enchiladas (Lamb or Cheese & Mushroom), Crispy and Soft Tacos (Baja-Style Fish or Shredded Duck & Mango Salsa), or Quesadilla (Grilled Chicken or Beef). The 5KM Zombie Run by LivingSocial Malaysia, which brought more than 2,000 people together was a night run with exciting zombie infestation. So much so, 800 tickets were sold out in less than 48 hours! The zombie-stic atmosphere was created by LivingSocial’s official make-up artist Kai Image Academy and zombie make-up sponsor Mehron. The surreal zombie infestation transformation begun at 3pm and it took nearly five hours to finish. Adding to the excitement, Red.FM cruisers were the official radio sponsor and acted as part of the camouflage for the zombies to give out free “live flags” to the runners. Tune Hotels also provided “free lives” for the runners when their lives were taken away by the zombies along the 5KM route. The Tune Zombie Busters also threw in an added surprise to all 15 “free lives” with a 3D2N stay at Tune Hotels. The winners walked away with prizes worth up to RM3,000, sponsored by LivingSocial Malaysia, TRON, and Preventive Healthcare. Banking On 100 Years The RHB Bank Concert attracted a big crowd as KL-ites joined the bank in celebrating its 100th anniversary at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur. After a two-year separation and a nearly year-long pending divorce, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are finally finito. The Associated Press reports that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon finalised the couple’s split. They were married in 2005 and separated in 2011 but the 35-year-old actor and 51-year-old actress took almost a whole year to finalise their divorce. Word on the street was that although Ashton Kutcher filed for divorce in December 2012 citing irreconcilable differences but it was held up, possibly because of disputes over money. Kutcher was Moore’s second marriage. Moore married Bruce Willis in 1987 and had three children with him; they divorced in 2000. Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who were co-stars on That ’70s Show in the early 2000s, have reportedly been dating since April 2012. On her end, Moore was seeing restaurateur Harry Morton - 20 years her junior and even younger than Kutcher - for the first half of 2013, though lately she’s reportedly been dating Harry’s father, restaurant mogul Peter Morton. Moore signed the final papers on 6th November, Kutcher on 14th November, before submitting them to an L.A. court. They have no children together and neither party will be awarded spousal support. The media launch on 3rd September last year introduced two professional footballers, Selangor FA striker, Afiq Azmi and defender Bunyamin Umar as the celebrity faces to join current Dashing stars Remy Ishak and Henry Golding. This season, Cabaran Dashing 2 also offered their fans, media and futsal enthusiast alike to take part in a coaching clinic, giving them the chance to score in the dark and learn professional tricks and moves under the neon light. Professional neon futsal coaching was conducted by exNational Player and former Premier League Malaysian Golden Boots award winner, Rusdi Suparman. The coaching clinic gave the participants a chance to see Selangor FA Striker Afiq and defender Bunyamin demonstrating few techniques on passing, defending and scoring under the challenge of neon lights. Their new found neon futsal scoring tips were put to the test with a friendly neon futsal match with the media and fans. The clinic was also a dream come true for 15 winners of Cabaran Dashing 2 app contest made available on Dashing™ Facebook page. At the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix, Australian driver Mark Webber wrapped up his career in Formula One with one final celebration. Decked in his Red Bull overalls, he finished runnerup, a glorious end for the winner of nine grand prix in 12 seasons. On the podium, Mark joined his Red Bull Racing teammate Sebastian Vettel and one of his best friends, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. It was then that he said of his final grand prix race, “I was quite overcome with some emotion, to be honest. Just that moment of helmets on, stepping in the car..I did it but it was actually the strongest emotion I’ve probably had all day. To finish on the podium with those two guys, they have been the best of this generation and I’ve raced them a lot. It meant a lot to me in showing I could still drive well at the end of my career I’m over the worst of it today in terms of the roller-coaster of emotions, I’m happy to leave here tonight. And yeah, that’s it.” Mark Webber debuted in 2002 when he finished fifth for tiny Minardi in his home race and is famous for being quite a straighttalker. Known for his direct, no-nonsense approach both in and outside the sport, he has more often than not displayed sheer hard work and determination as both a person and a driver. The beauty industry has benefited from promotion by celebrities and trendsetters. Now, it’s all about eyelash extensions. “Faking fuller lashes is a thing of the past. For 2013, faux lashes are being worn BIG and without apology,” tweeted the Kardashian sisters. Fashion ideology also dictates that bigger is better when it comes to a woman’s eyelashes but the quest for beauty can come at a price. Eyelash extensions work by having single synthetic fibres glued one by one onto the natural lashes, they are usually fixed in place by formaldehyde-based adhesives or other biologic glues. Medical experts have warned that the adhesives used can carry risks of infection, allergic reaction, and even cause the natural lashes to fall out. Broadway singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth suffered from a horrible allergic reaction to formaldehyde when she got her eyelash extensions done earlier this year. “I swelled up and I’m sneezing… It looks like I have lips on my eyelids!” she said. The Association for Damage-Free Eyelash Extensions defended that the adhesive should not contain formaldehyde and hypoallergenic adhesives are available as an option for those whom are allergy prone. However, even if one is not allergic to the glue, sometimes just the irritation from the procedure

Let’s face it – the job market is currently suffering a drop and it doesn’t look like it’s going to improve anytime soon. In October 2013, the executive director of the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) Shamsuddin Bardan said the number of job vacancies registered by employers in June 2013 dropped by 35.7% to 107,796 compared with 167,968 vacancies at the same time the year before. Why the drop?

because of the extended retirement age and higher operational costs coupled with lower revenue and an uncertain world economy. This means that jobseekers are now competing for fewer openings as existing employees have been retained in the workforce for the next five years with the extension of the retirement age from 55 to 60. In layman’s terms, this will affect all existing employees and the Gen Y (current jobseekers, fresh graduates, and even the students who are on the tail end of their higher education). The young ones will feel the full impact of the softening job market when some 180,000 of them enter the labour market after most public universities’ convocations (held in September and October). What are 180,000 bright-eyed but unemployed fresh graduates to do when there are only slightly more than 100,000 vacancies available in the job market? How can one fresh graduate stand out amongst the rest to cinch that dream job of his/hers?

An Education Or A Degree? Let’s take it back to the basics. Sure, you can be hardworking and top of the class during your time. Of course, a degree is a student’s passport to securing a good first job – if not for building a career immediately, at least it’s a gateway of some sort. But the reality is that there’s probably a large pool of students who are just as hardworking and as “top of the class” as you are. According to TIME magazine, 35% of college and university graduates had not shown any significant cognitive gains over four years. This means that while they’re hardworking and while a lot of effort is put into schoolwork, students seem to be merely pursuing a degree and not an education. As such, despite the availability of tens of thousands of fresh graduates armed with degrees in the job market, employers are saying that they’re still having trouble finding qualified ones to hire. Why is that, exactly?

Perhaps they’re looking at more than just hardworkers and a sizable certification? “It’s a waste for a Gen Y candidate to hold a degree from an Ivy League and yet not have common etiquette. I’ve come across situations in interviews where some of them seemed like they didn’t have any work experience in the resumes or any social skills/confidence at all. They also didn’t give the right answers or even bothered to ask the right questions. For example, they didn’t seem to care to ask about their job scope or their KPI, even when I cued them to. I can’t help but assume that they’re either shy or too scared to ask, or all they really cared about is how many leave days they’re entitled to and if they’re required to work weekends. Hence, coming across as lazy and insincere. I’m just wondering what’s the point of all that education was in the first place then? I’d rather retain my existing past-retirement employees than taking the risk of hiring possibly incompetent people although they’re certified smart” said Peter Lau, a director at one of Malaysia’s largest property development companies.

Competition Is Tough The job market has been slow since pre-GE13 last year and even after; vacancies are still on a decline. To that effect, employers are either opting for contract staff, outsourcing work (read: freelance), or over hiring permanent employees because it saves them money, or going to great lengths to find the right talents for the right positions in the challenging business environment. In short, the likelihood of some employers taking in fresh graduates is very slim and therefore, competition is tough. Consider this: an employer would rather hire a multi-skilled, well-versed, and street-smart Gen Y with a sizable qualification than a Gen Y with just a degree.

A human resource rep from RED FM Malaysia, one of Malaysia’s private radio stations shared with us her experience from some preliminary rounds of interviews that she recently conducted with Gen Y candidates: “While some interviewees came furnished with the right and impressive qualifications, I was taken aback to find that a large majority of them didn’t possess the social skills needed for the roles, whether it is apparent social confidence or proficiency in the English language. True, Bahasa Malaysia is our national language and it’s compulsory to be adept in, but English is still the world’s universal language. In the corporate workplace, we need candidates who can speak passable English, enough to converse and understand instructions. Now, if fresh graduate can’t even get past preliminary rounds of interviews, how do they expect to secure a job?”

Expectations vs. Reality More importantly, bright-eyed fresh grads that haven’t had any working experience – be it a parttime job over a semester break or an internship – often leave their higher education armed with a degree and a burning drive to accomplish just about a million things. But wait, is the Gen Y really prepared for the workforce? Here are some examples of some expectations versus reality for various paths of careers:

“When I started my first job in advertising two years ago, sure, I expected hard work. But being in Account Servicing a.k.a. a ‘suit’ wasn’t what I envisioned it to be. My starting pay was RM1,900 and I was quite literally thrown into the deep end of the pool – it was either I sank or swam. I thought I only had to handle clients but every day was a war zone. From handling clients to discussions with the Strat Planning team to dealing with the Creative team on top of ‘fire fighting’ things that could possibly go wrong and pulling the long hours. As for the career progression aspect of it? Not easy. Two years later, I’ve only been promoted once with a slight salary increment of RM300. Sure, I’m a Senior Account Executive now but life in advertising doesn’t get any easier. And no, it’s not as glamorous or fun or ‘by the book’ like what everyone else thinks or like what they used to teach you in university”, lamented Pam Chan, a 23-year-old Senior Account Executive from an international advertising agency located in Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur.

Arm Yourselves But with more than just a branded degree. Since competition is tough, an interview candidate will really need to stand out and it would actually take less than the allocated interview time for a human resource rep or a prospective boss to judge you. Whether or not you received a higher education certification from an Ivy League, your bid to impress your interviewees shouldn’t stop there. You will be judged from the very second you walk into the room and by the time you realise that, the interview is already over. Being able to show that you’ve had work experience will gain them the confidence that you’re more prepared than the candidates who haven’t worked a single day in their lives. And while we’re on the topic of confidence, social confidence is also important as it will show in how you behave or present yourself in the interview. This characteristic can be polished over time if you’re active in both social and educational club/societies in college and university. Don’t be a social recluse, take on as many memberships of interest as you can, and surround yourself with your peers! The more active you are, the better you are at communication and public relations. And the better you are at communication and public relations, the quicker you are to ask the right questions and give the right answers. Last but not least, language. Proficiency in the English language (yes, the same universal one that you see/hear in news, movies, and music) will help pave the way to you securing that job so learn it and learn it well. And remember, it’s not about a job that suits your qualifications; it’s about you meeting the jobgiver’s expectations.

If you’ve never been to the first LEGOLAND® theme park in Asia, well, where have you been and what else have you been doing? Slightly more than a year old, the popular family theme park, which has become a key driver of tourism to southern Malaysia, is now a family resort destination with more than 70 hands-on rides, slides, shows, and attractions.

uring the recent launch of the LEGOLAND® Water Park, we got to speak to Siegfried Boerst, the general manager of LEGOLAND® Malaysia, on what it takes to manage a family resort destination of that scale. Ever wondered what it’d be like to work in an amusement park? Here it is: brickby-brick. CAMPUS+: Hi, Siegfried. Tell us a little bit more about your role in LEGOLAND Malaysia? Siegfried Boerst: As general manager, I’m in charge of the operations at LEGOLAND® Malaysia, from marketing to letting people know what LEGOLAND® Malaysia is all about, to bringing visitors to LEGOLAND® Malaysia, on top of day-to-day operations and making sure that people have fun and safe experiences here. C+: Growing up, were you always a fan of LEGO yourself? SB: I used to play with LEGO as a child. The bricks were basically the same as the ones available today although the choices were fewer. I still have the bricks at home! So, when my children visit their grandmother, they can play with the LEGO bricks I used to play with during my childhood. My most vivid memory of LEGO was this little LEGO garage that had a door which would open automatically to allow the little LEGO car in. C+: Did you always know that you were going to someday manage an amusement park like LEGOLAND®? SB: I came very late into the theme park business, actually. After completing my education, I wanted live in France to improve my French, and that’s when I started at Disneyland Paris in 1992 as a ticket seller, just when it opened. I wanted to stay only a year but I really enjoyed my work and I moved up quickly and eventually became a part of the management team. After that, I moved back to Germany and I heard that LEGOLAND® was opening! I remember telling my wife that that’s what I really want to do, to work for LEGOLAND® because I have really fond memories of LEGO and it’s a perfect environment for me because I enjoy seeing smiles on the faces of children.

C+: How different is managing and up keeping LEGOLAND® Malaysia as compared to say, in Europe or the US? SB: For starters, the culture here is very different and the people here don’t have many experiences with theme parks as compared to Europe or the US. Because we’re the first international theme park in Malaysia, people are aware of the LEGO brand and what it stands for but they don’t know what to expect. Safety is always our biggest priority so we’ve put in a lot of effort in training people and ensuring follow-ups on a daily basis with LEGOLAND® Malaysia’s employees. In LEGOLAND® Malaysia, for example, we’ve covered all the wading areas because it can get very hot in Malaysia’s tropical climate. We had to invest money in providing more shaded areas and more ventilation for our guests. Maintaining the LEGO models isn’t that much different from the way it’s done at LEGOLAND® parks in Europe or the US because they’re built strong. C+: Can you give us a ballpark figure of how much it costs to build and operate LEGOLAND® Malaysia? SB: To build LEGOLAND® Malaysia is an investment that’s just slightly under RM1 billion and that includes the LEGOLAND® theme park, LEGOLAND® Water Park, and the LEGOLAND® Hotel. The highest operating cost is actually the staff because we provide a lot of contact points for our guests. The next highest cost would be for electricity and other utilities. C+: Will people need any special qualifications e.g. skills, education, etc. when it comes to managing an amusement/recreational park? SB: First of all, you need to have good people skills – not only for the guests but also to manage the people who work with you. See, their job is to entertain the guests and you, as a leader, should be able to entertain them as well so that it makes the job fun! Other normal skills that are needed are, of course, as a manager you’d need to understand numbers because you need to be able to do your budget. And let’s not forget some marketing knowledge, so that you’re on your toes and current about what’s deemed attractive or exciting for your guests. emember when discovering and listening to music was narrowed down to tuning in to the radio or making that trip to the nearest music store? The boom of technology in the past decade has made those good ol’ days belong in the last century. Music media formats have changed quite a bit and will continue to evolve. Let’s see how some of the formats have stood the test of time and changed the way we listen to music.

Cassettes and CDs The cassette tape was popular for decades because it was compact, weighed little, and small in size. Because of that advantage, the compact cassette was highly portable and you could carry it practically everywhere. Plus, they even sold empty ones where you could record and make your own mixed tapes from your favourite songs. So until the late 80s, youths loved it – until the compact disc (CD) promptly shoved the compact cassette off its pedestal. Suddenly, CDs have taken over as the preferred format because they were a little bit more “high tech” (read: digital) and offered good sound quality without needing an expensive system to play it on. CDs continued to reign as the king of all music formats from 1990 until the early 2000s although they cost twice as much as compact cassettes. Artistes and musicians, however, continued to gain from this format regardless of cassette or CD because an album sale is an album sale, nonetheless.

MP3s Sometime during the 2000s and way after the compact cassette met its untimely death, a new digital format came around to ensure that the CDs would eventually face the same fate. The compressed audio file named MP3 pushed digital media format to a whole new level. It’s an intangible file that can be transferred over the internet without compromising great quality sound. The sales of MP3s eventually took over CD sales in 2003

and spawned multiple music listening apps on computers – one of which was the ever-popular Winamp which recently announced that it was shutting down. It also spawned mobile devices such as the iPod and consumers can now bring their music with them wherever they go (to classes, while commuting, to the gym, etc.). MP3s also changed the way record companies sold their artistes’ work since fans no longer had to buy a full album to listen to just one hit song.

iTunes and Pandora There are a few popular desktop apps that continued to ride on the rise of the MP3s such as iTunes and Pandora. iTunes allowed fans to listen to music (usually not the full songs) and if they liked it enough, opened a gateway for them to purchase the songs. Pandora, on the other hand, was a media player that streamed music like an online radio (complete with low quality sound and ads) and also allowed fans to purchase music. Both were highly popular in the US during the peak of the MP3 fame.

Spotify

These days, consumers can simply search for an artiste on Spotify and add not one full song, not two full songs, but their entire discography to the library for free. And with customisable playlists, they can also make their own virtual mixed tapes filled with their favourite songs. Spotify users can also connect their social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter to share the songs that they’re playing with their friends, like a music listening party. The artistes earn from the streaming of songs, of course. For those who can afford it and for those who wants to do more with their Spotify account, all they have to do is pay a small fee for the premium account which takes out ads and allows seamless music listening without interruptions. Having a premium Spotify account means that a listener can listen to their favourite songs offline on the mobile app too (as compared to those who stream music from the mobile app, which runs on data charges)! This basically means that music fans no longer need a MP3 player gadget to get their dose of tunes ondemand while being on-the-go.

1918 – 1940 Young Mandela was born on 18th July 1918 into a royal family of the Xhosa-speaking Thembu tribe in the village of Mvezo in Umtatu. Ironically, his forename, Rolihlahla, is a Xhosa term which meant, “Troublemaker”. And troublemaker, he was, but for all the right reasons. For he would someday become a civil rights activist who was also the linchpin in South Africans’ move to end the country’s notorious apartheid regime. On the first day of school, as a custom among Africans in those days, his teacher bestowed upon him his English name, Nelson. As he attended church services every Sunday, Christianity became a significant part of his life. He attended a Methodist mission school, studying English, Xhosa, history, and geography. It was then that he developed a love of African history, listening to the tales told by the elders and became influenced by the anti-imperalist rhetoric of Chief Joyi. Nelson Mandela completed his Junior Certificate in two years and in 1937, he moved to Healdtown, the Methodist college in Fort Beaufort. Later on, while he was working on a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at the University of Fort Hare, he was suspended from the university when he became involved in a Students’ Representative Council (SRC) boycott against the quality of food. Nelson Mandela left university without receiving a degree.

1941 - 1954 In 1941, he returned to Mqhekezweni only to discover that he was about to be thrown into an arranged marriage, which led him to fleeing to Johannesburg. Nelson Mandela was later introduced to the realtor and ANC activist, Walter Sisulu, who secured him a job as an articled clerk at law firm Witkin, Sidelsky, and Eidelman. Attending communist talks and parties, Mandela was impressed that Europeans, Africans, Indians, and Coloureds were mixing as equals. Becoming increasingly politicised, in August 1943 Mandela marched in support of a successful bus boycott to reverse fare rises. Continuing his higher education, Mandela signed up to a University of South Africa correspondence course, working on his bachelor’s degree at night. After passing his BA exams in early 1943, Mandela returned to Johannesburg to follow a political path as a lawyer. His law qualification was an accomplishment that would ultimately help him make the kind of contribution to the freedom struggle of his people that he’d reportedly dreamed about since hearing stories of valor by his forebears during the wars of resistance in defense of their land. In 1952, he established South Africa’s first black law firm, Mandela and Tambo, with Oliver Tambo. 52

1955 – 1990 He became involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League. After the South African National Party came to power in 1948, he rose to prominence in the ANC’s 1952 Defiance Campaign, was appointed superintendent of the organisation’s Transvaal chapter and presided over the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities and, with the ANC leadership. By 1955, he found himself on the other side of the law following a country-wide sweep by police that would put him and 155 other activists on trial for treason. In 1962, using the adopted name David Motsamayi, Mandela left South Africa secretly. Before returning to South Africa, Mandela also received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia. His training would hardly be put to use. However, in 1964, alongside eight members of the ANC and its armed wing, Mandela stood trial in the Rivona Trial for plotting to overthrow the government by way of violent acts. The following year he was sentenced to life in prison, a term he served until 1990.

1990 - 2013 He spent 18 of his 27 prison years on Robben Island confined to a small cell with the floor for a bed and a bucket for a toilet. During his imprisonment, Mandela was forced to do hard labor in a quarry and was allowed one visitor a year for 30 minutes. An international campaign lobbied for his release, which was granted in 1990. In 1993, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Nelson Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa. Those years in prison would prove to be transformative, leading him to becoming the most significant black leader in South Africa and the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first black president in 1994, the first to be elected in a fully representative democratic election in South Africa. During his presidency, Mandela used the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enthusiasm for sports as a pivot point to promote reconciliation between whites and blacks, encouraging black South Africans to support the once-hated national rugby team. In 1995, the Rugby World Cup was hosted and won by South Africa, and was the first Rugby World Cup in which every match was held in one country.

Mandela opened negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory. He also formed a Government of National Unity in an attempt to defuse racial tension. He also publicised a new constitution and created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses. Continuing the former governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s liberal economic policy, his administration introduced measures to encourage land reform, combat poverty, and expand healthcare services. However, he declined to run for a second term, and was succeeded by his deputy, Thabo Mbeki. Mandela retired and became an elder statesman, focusing on charitable work in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. In June 2004, aged 85 and amid failing health, he successfully campaigned for South Africa to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, emotionally raising the FIFA World Cup Trophy after South Africa was awarded host status. Despite maintaining a low profile during the event due to ill-health, Mandela made his final public appearance during the World Cup closing ceremony. In mid-2013, Mandela was briefly hospitalised for a lung infection in Pretoria, which later worsened, causing him to be re-hospitalised in a serious condition. He was later on reported to have not opened his eyes in days and was unresponsive before being put on life support. He was discharged from the hospital although his condition remained unstable. I once had the room-mate that would probably be anyone’s worst nightmare. He was the epitome of messy. His desk was strewn with papers, notebooks, stationeries, and multiple planners. You wouldn’t even be able to see the colour of his desk beneath the mess! I’ve heard of people who are “organised chaos” but he was not. He always panicked when he couldn’t find something because he was that disorganised. His clothes, whether worn or newly washed, always sat in a few piles around the room. It was really gross and unhygienic. I’m not sure how he got through each day living like that – I couldn’t. After the semester was over, I asked the landlord if I could take over the bigger room for a slightly more expensive rent. Anything to get away from the chaos! 54

There was a foreign student who used to share a room with me during my first year in KDU University College in Damansara Utama. When we first moved in, she was really quiet and mostly kept to herself. Our housemates thought that she was an introvert. After a month or so, her true colours showed. That girl was loud! She would watch her Korean dramas and spend hours on YouTube without headphones on until late into the night regardless of whether we were studying or sleeping. I didn’t mind it that much if I was out but she wasn’t considerate at all. To top it all off, she would also sometimes Skype or make long distance calls at night and she would talk really loudly. So much so that I’m pretty sure not only our housemates heard her conversations but even our neighbours. We tried telling her nicely but she would get offended and then we’d feel like we were bullying a foreign student. And yes, we put up with her for an entire year.

My room-mate was actually my course mate and friend so there were times when we shared the same classes. To make it easier for our assignments, we would sometimes be in the same group since we’re already living together. Biggest mistake ever! I suppose she got really comfortable with me so sometimes, she would ask to use my laptop to get course work done and since we’re doing the same assignment in the same group anyway I figured, why not? She crossed the line when I caught her going through my Facebook account. A few times! Maybe I should’ve logged out but it’s common courtesy not to go through someone else’s personal things. The last straw was when I saw her going through my Gmail, both my inbox and my sent folder. That was it. I told her off and brought up the many other times she totally invaded my space. She apologised and said she couldn’t resist it. I didn’t stand for it. We’re not friends anymore, obviously.

espite what their name suggests, The Impatient Sisters are the least impatient sibling trio. They’re cool and calm, even with their rising popularity in the local music scene. The band’s name arose when they couldn’t decide what to go with, so they thought why not name themselves after what they’re like as sisters? Sure, every sibling have their moments of frustration with each other but that’s what brings them closer and in the case of The Impatient Sisters, it got them to make expressive melodies with tales of romantic depth, blending together quirky soul and folkpop to create a unique flavour. Three years ago, they made their debut on the online indie music show ‘The Wknd Sessions’ with their single, Comets And Stars. “We started writing songs and playing music just for the fun of it. We

didn’t think people would actually be interested in us,” said Soraya Taib, one of the trio during an exclusive interview with Campus Plus Magazine. But after being called for gigs so many times (sometimes up to four times a month!), the sisters decided their ensemble must answer the call. After their terrific performance on The Wknd Sessions, Malaysia’s indie music fans would not allow them not be a band. Since then, they’ve been gigging around Southeast Asia, making their presence known at festivals, jamming with Zee Avi, and once opened for Australian band The Jezabels. Though they chose their name because of how impatient they could get with each other, their music is the exact opposite of impatience and is as laid back as it gets. Soft vocal harmonies, soothing and romantic guitars, all with a mix of a glockenspiel, an egg shaker,

ukelele, and kazoo. But it’s their clear voices that will hold your attention with a surprisingly strong grip. “We were lucky to have people book us for gigs. We do realise how hard it is for others to score gigs but I guess it’s because we take what comes along. That’s why we don’t feel that pressure,” Soraya said. As you can see, the sisters made such an impact on their debut that fortune looks for them instead of the other way around. Bravo to The Impatient Sisters! You could say that there’s something of every flavour for everyone in there, that’s for sure!

Songs like You Caught the Light comes off as the perfect prom dance song with its phosphonic guitars, while songwriting skills shine in By The Throat and the slightly more sinister Science/Visions. Be Sending Their Love! Just a few weeks ago, Russian house music producers and DJs Swanky Tunes rocked up to our city for a gig.

wanky Tunes consists of forwardthinking members Vadim, Dmitry, and Stanislav, and they’ve been producing dancefloor bangers as well as remixing big names since the 2000s. Just last year, they were spotted whirlwind-touring and performing their hit releases on some of the world’s biggest dance music stages. Have they had time to catch their breaths? Let’s hear from the boys now in our exclusive interview with them: CAMPUS+: So, you guys were just here a few months ago... SWANKY TUNES: Yes, in May. We played at Zouk Club Kuala Lumpur and it was really cool! But we were only here for two days so we didn’t get to see much of your beautiful city. This time around, we got to go to the Petronas Twin Towers, have great dinners, and you know... we just played in Indonesia and compared to Kuala Lumpur, it’s totally different. Here it’s a real fun 50/50 fusion mix between an Asian lifestyle and a Western lifestyle. It’s nice! C+: Let’s talk a little bit about what you do... your music. Do you remember your first exposure to dance music? ST: We started a long time ago, about 15 years ago. We were still in school back then! Our inspirations were Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, there are so many to name. It was like nature for us. Then we released our debut album (for Russian territory only) and we managed to sell 10,000 copies. For a CD album, that’s like... a lot! So, we just kept doing music and here we are today. C+: What’s the music production process like for you guys in the studio? Do you guys come up with ideas together? Or fight? ST: (laughs) It’s hectic! Because we all get ideas and everyone wants to use their ideas. We’re usually like, can I do this? Can I do that? No, no,

I don’t like this! Oh, this works. Or that works. We all had different ways of music production too so it was difficult in the beginning. But now we’ve learnt to understand each other better and with the help of new technology, it’s easier for us to put our ideas together. C+: Before you go, are there any words of advice that you’d like to share with the aspiring Malaysian DJs/producers out there?

South Korean idol and international superstar Jay Park was in town recently and we were invited to have a brief chat with him! Decked in hip-hop wear and armed with a great sense of humour, he delves into life after 2PM (a little bit) and talks to us about his label, Above Ordinary Music Group (AOMG).

AMPUS+: You’re constantly being referred to as a bad boy so is that a label that you’re comfortable with? JAY PARK: Am I?! I did not know that! Maybe it’s just like, an image thing, you know? Maybe it’s my tattoos and my piercings and stuff but I don’t really do anything too bad. I try to keep it real always but still be respectful and have manners. I guess the bad boy image is cool for some but for me, doing bad boy actions... I don’t really do those.

not just worrying about myself right now – I’m worrying about other artistes as well. And they need to do well to establish themselves as artistes also without having me to be there constantly. I have to worry about myself and other people at the same time. It can get overwhelming but it’s fun at the same time.

C+: What’s life like for you after the launch of Above Ordinary Music Group (AOMG)? Is it more hectic? JP: Yes, it is! It’s way more hectic because I’m

CP+: And what’s the biggest difference between leading 2PM and AOMG? JP: Well, as far as me leading 2PM, I wasn’t the one choosing 2PM’s career path – that was done by the company. I was just there as the centre dude kinda going like, let’s do this! Whereas for AOMG, I’m very much hands-on because it’s a label I created. The reason why I created AOMG

The album also features a list of star collaborations such as Brave Brothers, Kim Do Hoon, Mad Clown, Block B’s ZIXO, Dok2, Geeks’ Lil’ Boy, Crush, and others. In line with its Love & Hate theme, what we’ve gathered is that the songs on the album focuses on the pros and cons of love. Title tracks Lonely (composed by the amazing Kim Do Hoon) and One Way Love (a work of art from Brave Brothers) are especially great ballads laced with Hyolyn’s powerful voice. Will Love & Hate propel Hyolyn to music charts domination? Well, that, and beyond.

Born to Beat, or better known as BtoB, are back with the release of its mini-album, Thriller. If you’ve been following the band closely, you would’ve first heard its pre-release track, When I Was Your Man. The classy and sentimental song eases you into the mini-album with a pleasantsounding piano melody throughout. Thriller immediately picks up the pace after the title track of the same name. As the name would suggest, the fast-paced song will force you on your feet as the boys of BtoB sing about being resurrected from the grave. Our favourite picks, however, is the R&B influenced Why (composed by B2ST’s Ki-kwang and BtoB’s Hyun-sik) and Like A Crystal, a ballad accompanied by the acoustic guitar that will most certainly pull at your heartstrings.

JP: There’s me, Gray, Jeon Goon, Cha Cha and Gray who just came out a month ago and he’s an hip-hop artiste. Actually, everyone in AOMG is going to be basically hip-hop and R&B because we’re a hip-hop and R&B label. Gray does both – he sings, he raps, and he produces. Jeon Goon and Cha Cha are mostly producers as of right now because they’re not really singers. C+: After going through all your highs and lows, trials and tribulations, what’s the one thing you would you say to your 15-year-old self? JP: What would I say to my 15-year-old self? You know, I wouldn’t really change anything or do something differently because I believe that I had to make those mistakes or go through what I went through. I wouldn’t be the way I am at this time if something was

The band might’ve only debuted earlier this year but it’s already well on the way to stardom. Although Boys Republic’s new mini album is titled, Identity, it’s evident that it’s continuing to experiment with different styles of music. Identity opens with I’m Ready, which allows the boys’ harmonisation skills to truly shine. We also love You Are Special To Me for its sounds of rock and What Up for its hip-hop vibe. And we’re wondering why Regret isn’t the first single because it really stands out from the rest on first listen. Of course, even Regret tells the same tale of heartbreak and exes – unsurprisingly. What we love about Nocturne is that each member continues to present his unique singing style yet come together as an impressive ballad group.

THE PLASTIC OBSESSION Since the 1940s, plastic has been on a full-on, mass production mode because of its wide range of unique properties. It’s everywhere because we use plastic for almost everything – so much so that we have become obsessed with it. In fact, plastic has become so essential that the amount manufactured in the first 10 years of this century will approach the total produced in the entire last century. Currently, about 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year to make bags, bottles, packages, and other commodities for people all over the world. Unfortunately, only about 10 per cent of this plastic is properly recycled. What happens to the rest? Well, 90 per cent ends up as waste in landfills or litter, leaching dangerous chemicals into the nearby soil and water, endangering wildlife and humans alike.

HASTE MAKES WASTE Like its inability to biodegrade, plastic waste is a huge problem because it never really goes away. What happens when it doesn’t go away? The chemical building blocks that make plastics so versatile are the same components that might harm animals, people, and the environment. And, the production and disposal of plastic also contributes to an array of problems: • The production of plastic emits millions or tonnes of greenhouse gases, accelerating climate change and polluting the air we breathe. • Chemicals added to plastic are absorbed by human bodies and have enough compounds to alter hormones. • Floating plastic waste can disrupt habitats and injure or poison wildlife. Over 100,000 marine animals and one million birds die each year from ingesting plastic. • Plastic send to the landfills can leach harmful chemicals (such as DDT) that spread into groundwater because it doesn’t biodegrade.

IT’S OKAY TO SAY NO How can you, as the daily consumer, help? While some are essential in our day-to-day lives, you can easily opt out of using plastic products. For starters, cut back on using plastic bags by replacing them with reusable bags. Hypermarkets, supermarkets, and some convenience stores have already started playing the part by charging shoppers RM0.20 a plastic bag on Saturdays. Instead of throwing plastic wares (bottles, takeaway boxes) away, wash them clean and reuse them. You can even bring these plastic wares back to pack drinks or food as and when needed. By using reusable bags and reusing plastic wares, you can easily say no to the unnecessary use of plastic products as and when it’s offered to you and at the same time, start protecting our environment, the wildlife, and even yourselves. And remember, a little bit goes a long way so take the pledge and cut down on your plastic use today. CAMPUS PLUS |

rabi may be touted as the “Mecca” of rock climbing, but there’s more to this part of southern Thailand that will soothe your senses and wash away your worries. This month, Campus Plus visited Ao Nang, a small resort town and sub-district in the south-western part of Krabi. It’s the most “westernised” beach there and was originally a backpacker hotspot. It’s moving gradually upmarket as the airport brings in more people with “deeper pockets”. Just because the place is beginning to cater to high fliers does not mean it is lacking in the affordable department. There’s still plenty of cheap lodging which is easy to find since almost everything is in the area range from 300 baht to 600 baht (RM30- RM60) a night, which is not too bad since you won’t be spending that much time in the hotel room anyway. 66

Keep in mind that when arriving at Krabi International Airport, there are several options for a transfer to your hotel. The local airport limo charges a steep 600 baht (just over RM60) for a 40-minute ride to Ao Nang. You could save some cash by taking the bus which shuttles to and from the airport four times a day at 150 baht (RM15) a person. For an even cheaper option, you could take a “Songthaew” (converted pick-up truck) from the airport to Krabi town (50 baht) and then from Krabi town to Ao Nang (40 baht). The whole trip on a “songthaew” will take just a little less than two hours for a total of 90 baht (RM9). To get around Ao Nang, you could either take tuk-tuks for about 20 baht per ride, or rent a motorcycle if you prefer to explore on your own. Motorcycle rental for 24 hours costs about 150-200 baht (RM15-RM20). The best thing to do when in Krabi

Ao Nang is one of the main gateways for travel to the Phi Phi islands is to go out on day trips and explore the surrounding islands. There are tours that will bring you island hopping to four to six locations for about 1,800 baht (RM180). Ao Nang is one of the main gateways for travel to the Phi Phi islands. These islands have beautiful emerald waters, white sand, and most of them are pretty solitary, depending on when you visit them. It could get pretty crowded at peak seasons apparently. It takes about 40 to 50 minutes to the Phi Phi islands by speedboat. If you are still looking for some rock climbing action, ask around for the Ao Nang Climbers which will give you all the information and courses from beginner to experienced levels.

In Ao Nang, there are no shopping malls or supermarkets, but convenience stores and souvenir shops litter the beachfront road and also side roads that branch off into clusters of shops. Many of the souvenirs and clothings are steeply priced especially if the shop owners know you’re a tourist, so haggle as much as you can. Food choices range from Italian, Thai and seafood to fast food and they’re all reasonably priced. Perhaps the only thing that could get pricey is transport. Ao Nang is an excellent location for a relaxing holiday. Island hopping, massages, and romantic dinners make it an ideal place for couples. SEPT 2013 | CAMPUS PLUS |

THIS INSTALMENT IS A REWIND OF THE ARKHAM SERIES, TAKING PLAYERS BACK TO THE EVENTS THAT LED TO THE FIRST TWO GAMES IN THE SERIES.

his instalment is a rewind of the Arkham series, taking players back to the events that led to the first two games in the series. In Arkham Origins, Batman is in his early years of professional crime-fighting. The game presents this in a number of ways and some of it is: His fighting style is still rough around the edges; Commissioner Jim Gordon and the entire Gotham City Police Department consider him a vigilante and possibly a menace working with Gotham’s criminals; and his first encounter with The Joker is shown here. Besides the deeper storyline that delves into Batman’s dark past, the game puts him in the hot seat when Gotham crime lord Black Mask puts a bounty on his head and employs hard core criminals and master assassins like Bane, Firefly, Deathstroke, Killer Croc, The Penguin, Deadshot, and more to hunt the dark knight. The Riddler remains as a side villain who gives Batman challenges to complete. Although there’s also Anarky, who has planted bombs around Gotham

City and it’s up to Batman to find and defuse them all. Batman has a couple of awesome new toys as well. One is the Remote-Claw which fires a cable with clamps at each end, creating an instant tightrope/zip line. The other is a pair of Electro-Shock gloves which power up his fists and turns him into Muhammad Ali with giant bug zappers as boxing gloves. There’s also the new and improved Detective Vision which brings up a mini-game where you analyse a crime scene with holographic animations. Although the gameplay and fight mechanics are the same from previous instalments of the game, there’s an added mix of enemies to make the fights more interesting and challenging. The best example would be the Martial Arts Expert. That’s right; Batman is not the untouchable super martial arts master yet in this timeline. The Martial Arts Expert is able to counter Batman’s attacks more than once and they can deflect special attacks too. There’s also the Enforcer, a hulking brute that can only be attacked once they’ve been

stunned with a couple of cape flicks. Both severely impact the player’s rhythm in combat and when mixed in with a group of weapon-wielding thugs, they can turn any fight into a gruelling encounter. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll definitely get a kick out of it, especially with the new multiplayer mode which features a 3-on-3-on-2 three-way match between two warring criminal factions and Batman and Robin themselves. You can play as any of the thugs belonging to a particular Gotham crime boss (e.g. Joker, Bane, Penguin) or as Batman or Robin. It may seem like overkill for whoever is playing as Gotham’s nocturnal heroes but rest assured the thugs are not one hundred percent defenceless themselves. At random moments during a match, one player can take control of the gang’s leader such as Joker or Bane who are tougher to take down and have special fighting skills at their disposal. For those who’ve never played either Arkham Asylum or Arkham City, we suggest you start with one of those or you’ll be missing out on certain plot aspects.
