Having just concluded a long succession of school years and just warming up to the contents of your SPM result slips in hand, it seems like the hard part has been done and dusted. However, it’s now time for some serious decisions. Making decisions is a huge part of growing up and a strangely empowering process too. Surprisingly it’s not entirely about which college or university you would be accepted to or even where you’d be spending the holidays. In fact, any ‘fresh out of high school’ senior will carry the same burden and experience, the same predicament − deciding on the one thing that will pave the path towards the career that you want to someday build; your undergraduate studies. The key to successful decision making is resourcefulness and if you’re not quite sure about what subjects to take or which college you want to go to, it’s simply because you may not have the right information to make your decision. With all that information bombarding you at several kilometres per second, it’s quite a task to sift through it all and whittle down to the essentials. However, as intimidating as it seems, the ability to make good decisions can be honed, simply by gathering all the pertinent information before making the final call. And if you’re reading this and feeling anxious, fret not! Not knowing the next best step is normal, and you’re certainly not alone. In fact, gathering every little bit of information is our forte, and we’re here to help! We have the relevant information that can help you identify what you might or might not want in a college, right down to the types financial aid packages available. We’ve also saved you hours of extensive research by compiling a list of available scholarships together with guidelines on how to conduct yourself in a potential scholarship interview! We’ve also added invaluable pointers on how your undergraduate studies can affect your future career. In a nutshell, if you need it, we have it. Acquiring knowledge is an act of self-empowerment! Remember, only you can weigh out the decisions to land on that very final one. Good luck and stay empowered!

JANUARY

FEBRUARY

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and Professor Nick Rawlins, Pro Vice Chancellor of Development & External Affairs, University of Oxford, signed a statement of intent between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the University of Oxford. This statement of intent was to declare academic and cultural collaborations between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the University of Oxford. Among its first projects is the 4th Southeast Asian Studies Symposium which

Excited students of Brickfields Asia College (BAC), PJ campus gathered around a shiny new Lotus Elise CR, each waiting with bated breath as one of them would have the opportunity to be called its new owner. It was Shirly Vun Siew Fui however, whom Lady Luck picked that day, as her name was selected among thousands of eligible students. Vun, who was still in the middle of a class when her name was picked, rushed to the stage to accept the keys to her brand-new car. When asked how she felt, she ecstatically said “I did not expect to win at all!”. The Lotus Draw was part of the ‘BAC Gives Back Millions’ campaign that started in 2014. The campaign has already seen the

is going to be held in March 2015, outside the University of Oxford for the first time. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has already established links with prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Cambridge. The partnership between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the University of Oxford illustrates their commitment to continually support academic study of the region, and dedication to develop a long, productive collaboration between the respective organizations.

However, he admitted to planning and training three weeks before the competition kicked off, which gave him ample time to improve his dishes. He was thankful for his lecturers’ guidance, advice, as well as for spending extra hours after class to discuss and improve his creations. GUS | 6

35 KDU Penang students competed against more than 1,000 professional chefs from across the globe in the 4-day cooking competition. In total, KDU Penang won 58 prizes under 14 different categories. Proud lecturer-in-charge, Chef Muhamad Faizal, was thrilled with his students’ achievement of one gold, two silvers, 30 bronzes, and 25 diplomas. college give away a round trip for two students to watch the 2014 FA Cup live in London, a Mini One car, as well as various other goodies, gifts and prizes. BAC also further stepped up their charity efforts by launching two concept stores back in August 2014. The concept stores, located in both PJ and KL campuses, sells everything from musical and sports equipment to stationery and clothing. With these stores in operation, 10% of proceeds from all sales goes to charity. “The BAC Gives Back Concept Store was always meant to be an experiment, where we could try something new to give back to the community,” said BAC’s Chairman, Mr. Raja Singham.

Good Teamwork Overcomes SAP Lumira Challenge 2014

UTAR students Lawrence Lee Chun Pei and Tan Teck Yin took first place in the SAP Lumira University Challenge in Kuala Lumpur. The challenge was organised by software leader SAP and is aimed to bring awareness to economic, social and environmental issues by using the SAP Lumira visualisation tools. Each team was expected to present their insights through data and propose their ideas on how the issues could be overcome. With their project, entitled ‘War and Armed Conflict in Africa’, Lee and Tan successfully beat two other teams from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College during the final stages. When asked about

how they managed to win, Lee said that good teamwork and synergy is important. He also said that “We had faith in our ideas and that made us stand out with confidence.” As for how they felt about the competition, Tan said “We joined the competition with the aim of enjoying it as part of our learning experience. It was also a good way to learn about the latest technology.” Lee and Tan, as well as the second and third place winners, will be representing Malaysia to compete in the regional stage of the competition, where they will go headto-head with the top three winners from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines.

Inspiring the World, One T-Shirt at a Time

Taylor’s College Students Help East Malaysian Kids Stay In School

Eng Xiao Fen became the pride of The One Academy ESMOD Kuala Lumpur when she received the title of ‘Encouragement Prize’ during the ESMOD Seoul International T-shirt Design Contest. The competition, which was held in conjunction with ESMOD Seoul’s 25th Anniversary, received entries from 574 students from ESMOD schools all over the world, such as Paris, Tokyo, and Berlin. The design that she submitted was a print for a straight cut T-shirt with either short or long sleeves.

The students of Taylor’s College did their part for the local education scene recently by reaching out to East Malaysian kids and motivating them to continue studying. The efforts in question were part of the ‘Make A Difference United’ programme (MADU), which is a resident community service initiative carried out by Taylor’s College students annually since 2005. The aim was to address the rising number of dropouts among East Malaysian students. According to a survey, it was revealed that the main reason for the dropouts was that they

It features the number 25 at the front with words like ‘ESMOD’ and ‘SEOUL’ interwoven into the number. For an added creative touch, she also included the stone grandfather, a stone statue from Korea that’s become an icon among tourists. On her thoughts during the competition, Xiao Fen said she had not expected to be chosen as one of the winners because she wasn’t focused on winning, but rather, only wanted to participate to share her work.

KDU Ushers in 2015 with New Campus

What costs RM260 million and spans a space of one million square feet? As of right now, it’s the new KDU University College flagship campus at the Paramount Utropolis development in Glenmarie. Similar to its size, the new campus symbolises a massive step forward for Paramount Education, formerly known as the KDU Education Group. Built to offer innovative teaching and learning experiences, the new campus plans to achieve its purpose through nine well-equipped lecture halls and classrooms, a contemporary library and a series of labs for practical, hands-on learning.

Of course, all of this wouldn’t be fully utilised without a panel made up of lecturers and advisory councils with industrial experience, which is something KDU University College has in abundance. Students are also welcome to build a life for themselves here with a 580-bed student village which has direct access to campus facilities such as specialised culinary kitchens, Alienware teaching labs and a state-of-the-art sound recording studio. Furthermore, as the campus is built within the Utropolis township, students will also gain access to the 120,000 square feet Utropolis Marketplace retail centre.

felt academically unprepared for examinations in addition to the lack of parental involvement. The project was executed by having the MADU volunteers interact with children aged between eight to 15 years old, and to help them handle anxiety caused by exams. Besides that, the volunteers also shared practical learning and relaxation skills with the kids to help ease their fear of exams. In order to fund the project, the students of Taylor’s College had organised a ‘Sponsor a Kid’ campaign beforehand which managed to raise a whopping RM13,000.

INTI Bridges the Gap between Industry and Academic World with LinkedIn

As part of its commitment to cultivate a pool of industry-ready graduates, INTI International University and Colleges (INTI) announced a strategic collaboration with the world’s largest online professional network, LinkedIn. The partnership between INTI and LinkedIn is in line with INTI’s #rethinkEDU initiative, which intends to transform the public’s perception of the roles of higher learning institutions by shifting the focus beyond the typical classroom experience. Through a joint effort with LinkedIn, students are exposed to briefing and facilitation workshops that will professionally prepare and

equip them with critical skills and tools to enter the workforce. Elaborating on the collaboration, INTI’s Chief Executive Officer, Rohit Sharma said, “Placing our students on the world’s largest networking platform, LinkedIn, will ultimately put them on an advantageous position in view of the borderless competitive talent scene.” The collaboration is believed to go a long way in assisting students at INTI to discover their dream jobs by maximising LinkedIn’s powerful network tool to connect with industry professionals, enhance graduates visibility in the competitive job space and access more jobs either in or outside of Malaysia. 7 | GUS

Should You Further Your Studies Locally or

Abroad? by ANDREW TAN

The question to study local or abroad has plagued many prospective students. Making the right choice and choosing between one or the other can change your career options and future paths drastically. Here are a few things to keep in mind when one chooses between studying abroad and studying locally.

Costs

A major factor between the two choices, costs can differ drastically depending on country. Studying in local public universities can be very cheap, and can offer various benefits to local students. Private universities in Malaysia are more expensive, since they are run by private corporations for the main purpose of profit; but they can also save you a lot of money by cutting down on travel costs, rent and other living expenses. The majority of destination countries for university level education have a higher cost of living; combine that with the sometimes incredibly high tuition fees, plane tickets and rent and some families simply can’t afford to send their children abroad. One way to alleviate the financial burden of studying abroad is to apply for a scholarship if you have obtained good grades from high school and foundation. Student loans are also available as an option for those who really want to study abroad but have neither the grades nor the financial capability, tough the loans can be a burden to you after you graduate. Do research on your destination country’s cost of living and the tuition fees of your target universities, weigh your options and make the best choice for your situation. University websites will list their fees for each of their courses and cost of rent and other living expenses can be found on websites and forums dedicated to tertiary education.

Student Exchange

One of the ways to still study abroad and save money at the same time is to go on a student exchange programme. Most universities offer multiple destination countries and partner universities that you can apply to and study there from half a year to two years depending on the programme. Living expenses and travel would be dependent on your target country and university, though tuition fees will be the same as if you were studying locally; it is a good opportunity for local students to have a chance of studying abroad without paying sometimes incredibly high tuition fees.

G U S | 14

Culture and Environment

Differences in culture and environment can drastically affect your studies as well. Homesickness may very well affect your ability to concentrate on your coursework and negatively impact your ability to perform well. Languages are also a concern if the country you are planning to study in does not use English as its primary language, though you can use the opportunity to learn a different language or improve your English. If you are planning to study in a country that has a different climate, temperatures and weather becomes an issue as well; make sure you do research on the climate of your target country and pack accordingly. Naturally, you will not face language barriers studying locally, though more professional English may be required. Climate and culture also becomes a non-issue, locally, the most exposure you’d get to different cultures may be from foreign and international students. If you are studying at a different state locally, you may still feel homesick though this is not that big of an issue since you are still within the country and returning home wouldn’t be that much of a hassle.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities are what most students focus on when they enter university, and it’s also a major factor when choosing the destination country. Local employers usually prefer employees who have studied abroad, as they view local graduates as lacking in the necessary mind-set and attitude to do a job well. In contrast, graduates of foreign universities, in their opinion, tend to be more independent, streetwise, resilient and self-driven. Of course, each employer is different but the underlying theme is that most prefer graduates from foreign universities, and the pay will be higher for them. Making the choice between studying locally and abroad is a difficult one, and it can be the key defining choice in your life as it will shape you into who you will be in the future. Consider your options carefully and conduct your research as thoroughly as possible in order to make the choice that suits you the best. Good luck, and enjoy your university life, be it in Malaysia or elsewhere.

Skills To Fit (And Pay) The Bill(s) by AARON

Regardless of the course of study you are pursuing, some skills are somewhat universal in the job market – whether you want to be a neurosurgeon or a cashier. Here is a list, in random order, of skills that would help you go further in the job market.

1.

Job Experience

Whether you were waiting tables, being a phone operator or a research assistant; as long as you’ve held a job before, it is a good sign for future employers. This goes to show that you have some experience, and one way or another you would have learnt some skills along the way. Though relevant experience would weigh more – so start looking out for internships, paid or unpaid, even whilst studying.

2.

Communication

This skill can be broken down into both verbal and non-verbal communication. Be careful with what you say, and your choice of words. You may have gotten used to cursing during your studying days, but that kind of language does not really go well in corporate professional culture. Instead of saying “it sucks”, try, “it needs a little bit more improvement”. Also important is your body language; while you might be able to mask your thoughts with words, your gestures and actions may show otherwise. Maintaining eye contact during conversations would show that you’re interested in what your client or employer is saying.

3.

Writing

Most jobs require at least some form of writing. Well, to begin with, you will need to write your resume to even land a job. Besides that, you might be required to document your work or even write a simple office memo. Though there is spell check available since the 20th century, you will still need to ensure that your style and grammar suits your objective. Report writing is very different from writing an essay. Moreover, you may have to deal with clients and colleagues via email, so be concise, precise and get your message across effectively.

4.

Public Speaking

There is a reason why Glossophobia – the fear of public speaking – is listed among some of the most common phobias. Yes it is scary, to stand in front of a crowd and even think of uttering a word, what more an entire speech. Sadly, we will all need to, at one point or another, during college or work, deliver speeches, presentations or pitch ideas to others. Sometimes, the key is to just fake it till you make it – appear confident, and you will be, sooner or later after some practice.

G U S | 16

5.

Tech-know-how

Students of this generation are the most tech-savvy ever, as the world evolves alongside technology. Almost every job involves the use of some form of technology, be it making fries at McDonald’s or sitting at a desk behind a computer. The least you must do is master the basics, like Microsoft Office programs. Having added knowledge on coding and HTML and programs such as Photoshop, AutoCAD and more will prove to be an added and valuable advantage.

6.

Finances

While the stock market might not be where you are aiming to be, it is necessary to learn how to manage finances. Knowing how to handle money, costing and budgeting, will increase the company’s appreciation of an individual. If you were to do purchasing, finding the best prices and affordability helps. In addition, learning how to manage your finances will be crucial to your self-development. Saving money where possible and spending wisely, for both the company and yourself.

7.

Networking

Go out, attend events and get to know people and what they do. More often than not, successful job referrals would come from friends and acquaintances. Although this might be a painstaking task for some, but the more people you know, the better. Think of how your skills and knowledge will add value to what a person has to offer and work accordingly. Getting to know a myriad of people also helps prepare you for the working world, as you are definitely going to meet all sorts of individuals – psychos included, so brace yourself!

8.

Criticism

No, criticising or being criticised is not a skill, but reacting well to it is indeed. Many people get offended when they are told that their work is not as good as they think it is. Well, nobody likes being told they are not good enough, but moping about it, or getting angry is not the right way of dealing with it. One should instead use it as fuel and strive to be better. Giving criticism too requires an art. Ideally, it should always be constructive, informing the person where they have gone wrong and offering suggestions or solutions.

HealthyButNot

Wealthy by AARON

Everyone would agree that the best time to learn skills for financial management would be when one is young, and students typically are not the richest bunch of socialites out there. Therefore, it is important for students to know where they can save, and when to spend their (parents’) money. One avenue in which students can save a tonne of cash is through food. Many of us spend a lot eating and drinking out. Further, what we tend to eat out there isn’t necessarily the healthiest option. Therefore, we don’t only end up damaging our wallets, but also our health in the long run.

Junk Fast Food

Now for only RM5.95, you can get a drink, a side of fries and certain types of cancers with most of your fast foods. The ingredients used by most food vendors usually aren’t the healthiest available in the market. The reason is simple; these companies are only thinking about profit. They’re not going to buy quality ingredients for you to stay healthy, they’re going to buy the cheapest ones out there, to make the most profit – after all, profit is what business is all about, right? Therefore, you should scrap fast foods out of your diet. Don’t be Sen wise and Ringgit foolish, because though fast food may be cheaper, in the long run, you may very well find yourself having to spend more money. Mainly because these foods will cause you to become unhealthy and overweight, thus causing all sorts of expensive health problems later on.

Eat Your Veggies!

Eating greens will help you save some green. As vegetables provide your body with necessary nutrients, your body will eventually become healthier. Thus with your body resistance built up, you wouldn’t tend to fall sick so often and hence cutting down on the need to cough out money at the doctor’s. Besides that, vegetables are pretty versatile foods. You can eat carrots as a snack, and cabbages can be stir fried, put in a salad, made into soup or sandwiched in bread.

G U S | 18

Cook Your Own

This is one sure fire way to save cost. When eating out, prices are actually hiked up a lot more than what they really cost. A plate of fried rice that can be made for RM2.00 would be sold at RM4.00 – that’s a 100% profit margin, not to mention the cost of drinks! Plus, when you cook meals yourself, you wouldn’t use unhealthy products or methods, like re-frying in already blackened oil, and to top it off, you get to make the food suit your taste buds exactly. Healthy eating on a budget IS possible; it just takes a game plan and a little creativity.

Save Me The Money by AARON

Students are often times broke and any method to stretch the budget is usually most welcomed. More so if you’re studying abroad. Here are some practical (not to mention tried and tested) ways to save money while still enjoying your student life.

1. Hand Me Downs 3. Make Use of Your Student I.D.

Books, that is. Textbooks can be expensive stuff, but if you buy second, third or fourth-handed ones from those who have already taken the class, you would be saving quite a bit. Don’t forget then to maintain the condition of the books, so you can make some money by selling them off to the next person.

2. Public Transport

One way to save while still a student is to not buy a car just yet. Sure, if you need to, then do so. If not, save money on the petrol. And on the downpayment. And the monthly loan instalments too. Further, some public transport providers also cater to students’ financial needs and offer discounts on fares. G U S | 20

Many places do offer a student discount, so don’t be afraid to ask to find out. It could be at the movies, restaurants, bookstores and more. You’ll never know until you whip out your student card and enquire within.

4. Pack Food

Eateries that you visit sometimes serve up huge portions of food that you may just leave on your plate once you’re full. Instead, ‘tapau or bungkus’ those foods and it may save you the cost of your next meal. Alternatively, to save even more money, pack your own food, like sandwiches or pasta to classes.

5. Get a Roommate

For those who are living out on their own, they can subsidise rental with the presence of another human being in your room. While some may think it troubling, it allows you to grow as a person as you will need to learn how to deal with other people. Thus, allowing you to become more patient and understanding, with an (hopefully!) equally patient and understanding roommate.

6. Pass Your Subjects

Resits are probably one of the worst expenditures you would have to spend on, if you fail a subject. You do not only waste a whole lot of money on it, but also time. So attend and pay attention during classes and get through your subjects! Plus then, you wouldn’t have to deal with the wrath of your parents either.

7. Get a Part-Time Job

Of course, do not sacrifice too much of your study time for the work. Preferably something that would allow you to work from home or on weekends and that doesn’t require much commitment. This way, you would be earning extra money which could afford you some luxuries every now and then. All in all, one just needs to learn how to spend wisely and avoid waste. You can live without designer coffee and changing your phone that often. Treat yourself in moderation while being a student. Save the spending for later when you are already earning money for.

Tools for University Life by ANDREW TAN

Choosing the right university and course is usually the first priority of any prospective undergraduate. However, what about after the application process and all the plans are set? Here is a list of items that all prospective university students should keep in mind.

Stationery This is a given, students should be ready to take notes whenever and wherever and should always have a handy notebook and stationeries nearby. While tablets, laptops and smartphones have opened up new ways of note taking, some students still find it faster and easier to use the notebook and pen, as it also reduces distractions mid-lectures such as Facebook and Twitter. Pens, pencils and erasers should always be among your stationeries, other useful stationeries include highlighters, rulers, paper clips and staplers. Keep them in a convenient bag and take them with you everywhere.

Laptop Whilst all universities will have computers allotted for student use in libraries, labs and other places, it is highly recommended for students to have their own personal laptop. During peak hours, it can sometimes be hard to find an available public computer for use; saving and continuing your coursework is much more convenient with a laptop of your own. A netbook is preferred as though it may not be as powerful as a full sized PC or laptop, it provides you with all the features you will need from a computer such as word processing and web browsing, while being cheap and easy to carry around.

G U S | 24

Smartphone Now, almost everyone has a smartphone and though students might not regard it as such, the smartphone can be a very useful tool in university. The microphone/ sound recorder can be used to record lectures and used for review later. Pictures of complicated algorithms and formulae can be snapped easily and save you the hassle of jotting them down as notes. The calendar and reminder functions can be used to keep track of important dates such as exams and assignment due dates. The latest models of smartphones can be quite expensive, and it might be lighter on your wallet to purchase an older model; just make sure the necessary features and functions you need are present in the model you’re considering.

USB flash drive The USB flash drive is a must have for university students since most coursework, assignments and review materials are digital now. USB flash drives are very cheap on the market now, and provide you with much needed mobility and the flexibility to back up your data and work, just in case something happens to your other devices. You can also chip away at your work wherever you go with a USB flash drive – key for students trying to squeeze in more study time between classes, while at work or with family. Save your work, review material, and carry it anywhere; just be sure of the amount of memory you will need and pick accordingly.

Power bank

Headphones

Though not a must, a power bank is extremely handy to have in your possession in certain situations. It allows you to be more liberal in the use of your electronic devices such as your smartphone, and can help you spend less time worrying about that dwindling power bar and searching desperately for a socket to charge your dying devices. Pick a model that suits your needs as the amount of charge and quality of each power bank widely differs by manufacturer and model. Size can also be a factor as the ones that hold more charge can be quite a bit larger and heavier; again weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each model and choose one that suits your needs best.

Again, not a must have item but very useful in certain situations as well. Headphones allow you to listen to music while reviewing or completing your course work without disturbing others. Lecture recordings can also be clearer and more easily understood when listening with headphones instead of the default speakers of the recording device, reducing the hassle of repeating the same part of the lecture over and over again. The price range of headphones is very large, sound quality and designs vary widely; it is recommended to purchase headphones with good sound quality and noise cancelling feature.

Which University Is The Right One For Me?

by ANDREW TAN

With so many universities to choose from, how do prospective students know they have made the right choice? Choosing a university is important, and it may be one of the most important choices a person makes in his/her life, as the environment, people and education influences, shapes the person that he/she is to become. There are many factors that need to be taken into account and decisions to be made before cementing the choice of which university you are going to.

G U S | 26

Courses available

It doesn’t matter if the university you are keeping an eye on is the most famous and best in the world; it’s practically worthless when it doesn’t even offer the courses and majors you require. Different universities offer different courses, and although many major universities offer many different courses and majors, it is a good idea to find out if the university in mind is actually well known for that specific course, or it may be just a course that the university whipped up for extra rankings in the top universities lists. Students will also need to find out what type of assessment they have for their course. For example, you’re doing a coursework-assessed BTEC National in business studies, but the course you’re considering is mainly assessed by exams.

Location

If you are planning to study locally, this may not be such a big deal, with location only becoming an issue when you are studying in different states or a fair distance away from home. When the university you choose is in another country entirely however, it becomes one of the focal points of your studies. Living space and rent becomes a big issue students will have to deal with – universities usually reserve a portion of dormitories for international students for a limited time, and it can be a real headache when the quotas are full or when you move on as a 2nd year student, whereby you are expected to look for your own accommodations. The food and culture of your target country need to be taken into account as well. If you are a Muslim, Halal food can sometimes be difficult to obtain though the student services of each university can help you with that.

Cost

Another major factor when choosing your university is the cost of your education. Prospective students will need to weigh the pros and cons of the cost of their education. When studying overseas the issue is compounded, plane tickets, rent, visa fees and living expenses must all be taken into account and discussed with your family to make the best decision. Questions that students need to answer are, are the costs for my education justified? What are my career options? And is there any way that I can cut costs and still achieve my university goals even if I choose another university that will not cost me as much? There are some ways to alleviate financial issues, if you are a high-achieving student, there are multiple awards and scholarships available for you; failing that there are also student loans that can be considered but those need to be paid back with interest after graduation, unless there are clauses that state you will not have to if u achieve certain grades in your course.

Other Research

There are many other factors that can determine your choice of university, the quality of the academic facilities is one. When the university is having an open day, make sure you check out the academic facilities you’ll be expecting to use, including the library, computer suites or labs etc. And if you can’t make it to the university itself, get as much information as you can – maybe even a virtual tour from the university website. Accreditation is also an important fact to check when you are considering less well known universities. Educational accreditation assures courses and operations of educational institutions or programmes are evaluated by an external body to determine if applicable standards are met. If standards are met, accredited status is granted by the appropriate agency. In most countries in the world, the function of educational accreditation is conducted by a government organisation, such as the Ministry of Education. Choosing a university is no mean feat, and all factors must be taken into account. Hopefully this guide has given you the necessary information for you to make the right decisions. This is by no means an exhaustive list and each person has his/her own specific situation. Here’s wishing you to potentially find the best university for you.

Which course suits me the best? Many students leave secondary school with a goal already in mind. They’ve mostly decided on which country they are going to study in, which universities they are going to apply for, and of course, their course and major. If you aren’t among those who’ve already decided, here are some guidelines to help you figure out which course is best suited to you.

Choose Your Course First, Not the University Many prospective students make the mistake of choosing which university they want to go to first instead of choosing their course and major. A well-known and prestigious university may help you in the future, but if the course and major you are currently interested in is not even offered in the university, it is better to look elsewhere. Many universities are famous for specific courses. For example, Harvard Law School. While this institute is best known for its law graduates, that doesn’t mean that its other courses are of inferior quality. Just make sure you do a little more research for the course you’re applying for.

Interest vs Practicality Some students choose to major in “the most famous” major when selecting what to study in college or university. The flaw of this method of choosing is that the course may not meet their expectations, and quickly loose interest in the course itself. A better way to select a major is to see what subjects are offered throughout this programme. Select the programme that you’re most comfortable with, and go ahead with that major.

G U S | 28

Cost and Length Another important factor to consider is the cost and length of the course. Some courses, like a Medical degree takes longer and much more money to complete than others, like Business or Economics. Plan ahead and make sure your study plan includes all of the required subjects and credits your degree requires for you to graduate. Make sure that you keep that in mind when hashing out a study plan, no one likes to find out later on that you missed credits and have to graduate later than your peers.

Career Path Your career opportunities after graduation is also an important thing to take note on. Look at the career prospects of the course before selecting one. Consider various factors such as income, job security, stress, responsibility and other benefits while researching a profession. It is also useful to find out if a future employer will invest in your education. Another thing that you may need to keep in mind, is to find out if the course or university offers you any internship or placement opportunities, you can also research job opportunities in the area surrounding your university.

Research, research, research; that is a mantra that needs to be recited in your head. Choosing a course is one of the most important decisions you can make in life. While it is not difficult to change your mind halfway and opt for a different path, you will need to retake all of the different subjects and redo your coursework, thus wasting precious time and resources. With the Internet being so easy to use in this day and age, there is no excuse to do your research thoroughly, allowing you to make better decisions.

In October 2015, the JCI in collaboration with the Harvard University Asia Center organised a conference on “Southeast Asia Explores Sustainable Development: Coping with SocioEconomic Difficulties, Big Power Rivalry and Climate Change” at Harvard University. The conference and visit registered another milestone achievement. Recently, the Harvard Medical School entered into a unique collaboration with the Sunway Healthcare Services Group and Sunway University, to promote specialised medical education to emerging leaders in Medical & Healthcare in Malaysia, Southeast Asia, Australasia and other countries in Asia. After two successful years of hosting the Asia Leadership Trek, the University recently partnered with Harvard University Asia Centre to bring in the Centre for Asia Leadership (CAL) to Sunway. The partnership will see an increase in conferences and camps, where students and young professionals have ample opportunities to participate and learn leadership skills from Harvard and other Ivy League university post-graduate students. In tune with the JCF’s legacy of giving and nurturing the seeds of wisdom, Sunway University realises the importance of social responsibility. Asides from international academic linkages, G U S | 36

Sunway University in its effort to further promote education provides the community and public opportunities to learn from the experts. It was ranked No. 1 in Asia for ‘Employability’, highest out of 15 Asian institutions.

Moving Forward with Sunway University Sunway University, originally Sunway College when it was setup in 1987, was formed by Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah with the belief and understanding that higher education is vital to the progress of the country. This belief and understanding still holds true to this day. Sunway University, together with 12 other institutions under the Sunway Education Group, is owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF), Malaysia’s largest education-focused social enterprise. The JCF is imbued with the philanthropy of nurturing success and transforming lives through education. This year in September, the Foundation made history with a disbursement of scholarships worth RM45 million to more than 3,000 students surpassing last year’s RM33 million, bringing the total amount of scholarships awarded to date, to more than RM210 million to over 23,000 students. Opportunities abound for recipients, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah believes education leads to better future and lives for the recipients and also for our nation. “The higher education industry is growing globally, and so is Sunway University, seen through the increasing number of scholarships being given out. As a stalwart supporter of the nation’s education aims, the JCF aims to ensure sustainable quality education for present and future generations of students,” said Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University. With such passion and dedication towards education, the

University recently hosted the Global Access to Post-Secondary Education (GAPS) Conference, an initiative by the European Access Network (EAN) highlighting the global issue of unequal access to post-secondary education. Taking education very seriously, Sunway University works closely in partnership, collaborating with world-class partners Lancaster University and Le Cordon Bleu International, offering premier education with international recognition. History Sunway University’s history goes back to 25 July 1987, with the official opening of Sunway College in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia by the late Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj ibni Almarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah. The College was a pioneer in offering twinning programmes in partnership with reputable foreign universities from the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. In August 2004, Sunway College was upgraded by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to a University College and in January 2011, it was upgraded again to Sunway University. Today, it is a leading Malaysian university offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in English.

The University’s present campus was opened in 1992 by Tun Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, at a cost of RM120 million. Strategically located in the modern and well-planned township of Sunway Resort City, the Sunway University campus is fully equipped with academic, hostel and sports facilities. It is among the largest and most modern private institutions in Malaysia.

Recent Milestones Sunway University in 2015 welcomes more students and staff with the completion of a new RM350 million 12-storey building equipped with cutting edge academic facilities, including a state-of-the-art auditorium and modern lecture halls with conducive breakout rooms. Sitting on top of a two-level basement car park is a FIFA certified synthetic turfed football field, tennis courts and other sporting facilities. The environmentally friendly building can accommodate 9,000 students. The building also houses the state-of-the art ISO 9001:2008 certified Sunway Campus Library which encompasses three floors and spans an area of more than 72,000 square feet. Modelled based on the concept of the learning commons, it is a collaborative environment to support and enhance student learning, academic excellence and lifelong learning. The resource-rich library is equipped with print, audio-visual and e-resource collections, totaling 285,000 titles. Facilities include collaborative study zones, group project rooms, personal study spaces, viewing rooms, IT zones, and even a drink and phone breakout area. Students can also make use of the extended-hour study area at the library after the main area closes.

Other modern facilities include computer labs, biological science labs, industrial incubators, toxicology, cell and molecular labs, psychology observation rooms, recording studios, kitchens and training restaurants and an art gallery. On campus is also an ultra-contemporary Graduate Centre featuring three auditoriums built in the style of those at Harvard University. The campus is linked to Sunway Pyramid Mall and other amenities in the Sunway Integrated Resort City which includes Monash University Malaysia via a tree-level canopy walkway. In July 2010 the institution was classified as EXCELLENT (Tier 5) in the first official rating of all public and private universities and university colleges by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). This first official SETARA 2009 rating placed Sunway on par with the best public universities in Malaysia and also on par with the Malaysian branch campuses of leading foreign universities, including Monash University Malaysia and the University of Nottingham. In 2011, Sunway University was again ranked Excellent (Tier 5) in the same SETARA Rating System. There were no institutions in Tier 6 (Excellent) on both occasions that the rating was done. Sunway University recently achieved a Tier 5 (Excellent) in the first ever D-SETARA discipline-based rating system for its Hospitality and Tourism disciplines by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency. The D-SETARA measures quality of teaching and learning in academic disciplines at undergraduate level, in public and private universities, foreign university branch campuses and university colleges in Malaysia. Sunway University is also internationally recognised. The QS World university ranking and rating organisation, regarded as one of the most authoritative of its kind across the world, has awarded Sunway University an overall rating of four-stars out of a maximum of five-stars in its 2015/2016 QS Stars results. The areas of study are in computing, communication, psychology and business. This validation ensures that the degrees awarded by Sunway are of an international standard and are on par with those offered by the prestigious Lancaster University. Graduates receive dual Sunway University and Lancaster University Honours degrees and are awarded two scrolls, one from Sunway University and one from Lancaster University. Lancaster University, founded in 1964 is one of Britain’s best research and teaching universities. The University is ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world and 9th in the UK. The QS Stars rating is the second global recognition Sunway University received for the year. Aircraft Engineering at Nilai U

The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programmes at Nilai U are highly popular.

N

ilai University offers over 40 diploma, degree and post-graduate programmes. One of the most popular among school leavers is the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. This is largely due to the high demand for skilled and qualified personnel and also because those in this field are sought after all over the world. The Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engieering programme at Nilai U is highly attractive because its syllabus prepares students for the all-important European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) B1-1 and B1-2 examinations. These examinations are the first step towards becoming a fully licensed aircraft maintenance engineer who can certify a plane airworthy. Due to high demand, Nilai U now offers a top up programme – Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. This one year top up programme is open to students who have successfully completed the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering or related engineering field. What makes this top up option highly attractive is that students who successfully complete this programme will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, UK. This is what some of our students say about the programmes:

G U S | 44

“Nilai U lecturers are very helpful and accommodating. Many of them are aviation veterans and they are more than happy to share their experience with the student. They often have extra classes to help students prepare for the all-important EASA exams.” – Ahmad Farhan Nor Azlan

“In just three-and-ahalf years, students can actually gain a Nilai U diploma, EASA certification, a degree form Kingston University, as well as completing six-months On-The-JobTraining (OJT) with one of the industry partners,”

- Shaun Kwan Ka Junn

“Having two aircraft on campus certainly help us better understand the inner workings of the planes.” - Benjamin Ting Shyr Shiuan

“They are very experienced and are always willing to share their knowledge with the students. They are always advising and encouraging us, reminding us of the huge and important responsibilities that accompany being an aircraft maintenance engineer.” -

“Furthermore, I believe that in this day and age, paper qualification is all-important. Yes, the EASA license is important but I believe having a degree will help separate me from the crowd.” – Low Jow Ee

OVERVIEW GMI

When one speaks of German technology and skills training in Malaysia, one will undoubtedly think of GermanMalaysian Institute; from the heart of the city to the current location in the green vicinity of Kajang-Bangi border.

P

opularly coined as GMI, German-Malaysian Institute has been in existence for two decades and the beautiful journey had started in 1991. Set up as the brainchild of Malaysia’s fourth Premier, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed who also paved the way towards Vision 2020, GMI is the outcome of a wellgrounded collaboration of two governments; Germany and Malaysia. To date, GMI has had marked achievements to its testimony and beyond everybody’s initial expectations. 55 | G U S

GMI was established with the main objective of bringing German technology and advancement closer to home. This was done to provide advanced technical training for more Malaysians in related technology fields which, in turn, will help accelerate the voyage into Vision 2020. GMI training philosophy, approach and equipment, carry significant German influences. All training at the institute upholds the practice-based approach complemented by approximately 30-40% theoretical input. This has proven to encourage trainees to be actively involved in learning and stimulate them to become life-long learners. In 1992, GMI received her maiden intake of 57 students. This kicked-off the first milestone in the history of GMI. Two years later, on September 1st, the official opening of GMI took place and that enhanced the presence of GMI – GMI instantaneously landed herself on the world map for skills training and development. GMI prides herself in the emphasis placed on a hands-on approach for all trainees – full-time or short term programmes. The 2:1 ratio of student to training equipment optimises equipment utilisation. At GMI, it has always been more of “knowing how” as compared to “knowing why”. The provision of a 16-week industrial placement in Semester 5 means living up to the standards and demands of the industries in the specialised fields. Many graduates are picked up for employment upon completion of studies by the same industries which

G U S | 56

had readily accepted them for in-plant placement. In their final semester, with the first-hand experience and exposure to the real challenges in the real world, GMI students return to campus for the continuation of their studies. Here, they present a project proposal and once approved, they start working on the project and present the project to internal and external verifiers for assessment. Verifiers are made up of academicians and industry representatives. The maturity and commitment displayed by the students in the course of completing their projects and in performing their tasks, becomes an eyeopener for those who are unfamiliar with the extensive skills training at GMI. There is more than meets the eye and that is a fact at GMI. In meeting its objectives, GMI has not only opened her doors to full-time students, but also for the workforce through upgrading and upskilling exercises via technical skills short courses. GMI has become the icon in skills development programmes through various training programmes like full-time Diploma programmes; technical short courses; industrial services and consultancy; train-the-trainers modules and German pre-university programme. Seventeen technology sections (eight in Production Technology and nine Industrial Electronics, respectively) complement each other in ensuring the smooth implementation of seventeen Diploma programmes offered to the public. At Production Technology, the sections which scaffold the fulltime programme training are Tool & Die Technology; Mould Technology; CNC Precision Technology;

Product Design and Manufacturing; Sheet Metal Fabrication & Product Development, Machine Tool Maintenance, Industrial Design and Manufacturing System. At the Industrial Electronics Department, the Mechatronics Technology; Process Instrumentation and Control Technology; Electronics and Information Technology; Network Technology; Sustainable Energy & Power Distribution, Facilities & Building Automation, Industrial Communication System, Autotronics & Hybrid System and Industrial Plant Maintenance, make almost everything electronics-related possible. Over the past twenty years in existence, GMI has delivered over 6,000 highly-skilled graduates into the world of work. They assimilate steadily into the workforce at various levels and in a wide range of industries. Selected technical modules in the respective full-time programmes are also offered to the workforce in individual modules known as short-term courses which range between two to four days, depending on the course contents. Each technology section provides a list of short course modules for employers and individuals to choose from as they actively and continuously participate in the upgrading and upskilling drive mostly at national and international levels. More than half of the modules are HRDF-claimable for registered SMIs and SMEs. GMI has trained many trainers and skills workforces at international level – Vietnam, Sudan, Aceh, Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Oman, and are currently working on more international training programmes.

GMI trainers in our very own specialised fields, or Technical Training Officers (TTO, in short), have a minimum of three years industrial experience, further testifying to the practice-based approach GMI is championing. These trainers are constantly undergoing technical skills upgrading courses of their specialisation areas, in Germany. Local training is normally done at Technology Centres (TCs) set up by GMI industrial partners at GMI training departments. Working on a similar basis as R&D centres at other institutions, TCs allow positive and enhanced working relationship between industries and GMI as GMI students and TTOs utilise the facilities. Through the Teacher Development and Education section which provides the “train-the-trainers” programmes, GMI trains technical trainers in pedagogy as well as in education-related modules such as components of Pro3BL, curriculum design, etc. For those who look forward to being in Germany for closer to the home of the land of many opportunities, the pre-university programme is designed specifically for it. The twenty months at GMI prepares students with Cambridge A-Levels, the European Standard in German Language up till B2 level and Vorpraktikum (practical experience). Upon meeting all requirements, students fly to Germany to enrol in engineering degree programmes at selected University of Applied Sciences. In all that GMI offers to various market segments, we have always made it a point to highlight skills training and development as the core of the GMI knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer. At the end of your personalised tour of our training facilities, you will understand why our tagline echoes “In advanced technology, WE are the piece that makes it complete”.

PURSUE A HEALTHCARE PROFESSION THROUGH SEGI SEGi University and Colleges first opened its doors as Systematic College in 1977 in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s commercial district, offering globally recognised professional qualifications. Since then, SEGi has experienced significant growth by adapting and catering to an increasing demand for tertiary education and professional qualifications in Malaysia.

K

nown as one of the largest private higher education providers in Malaysia, SEGi now serves 27,000 students in five major campuses located in Kota Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Penang and Sarawak.

With over 160 programmes to choose from and ranging from Undergraduate to Postgraduate studies, students have a wide range of top-notch programmes lined up to prepare them for successful careers. Choices of programmes include Business and Accounting, Creative Arts, Engineering and many more. However, one of the most popular faculties at SEGi is Health Sciences which is delivered through a variety of programmes : Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Optometry and Vision Sciences and Biomedical Science.

Medicine

The five-year Bachelor in Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at SEGi University emphasises on nurturing holistic doctors who are not only capable, skillful but compassionate. To achieve this, the curriculum was designed to embed moral and ethical values into teaching and learning activities. This is fostered and enhanced by the implementation of a novel dedicated mentor-mentee mentoring system, which is carried out over the entire programme. The MBBS programme is delivered through themes and system-based approach rather than as separate entity of individual subjects traditionally taught in the past. In addition, clinical exposure is introduced as early as the first year to ensure students are familiar with basic medical sciences in clinical practice. Throughout the 5 years of studies, students are trained to develop their soft skills in communication, social responsibility and team-building regardless of ethnic and gender differences. They are also nurtured from the beginning of the programme to have critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership and management skills. SEGi medical students conduct practical and clinical rotations at the Teluk Intan General Hospital and also Sibu General Hospital.

Dentistry SEGi conducts the 5-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) to produce competent, caring and knowledgeable dental practitioners. Students are involved in clinical procedures from the start of the programme, with an emphasis on the recognition and prevention of oral diseases. The dynamic integrated curriculum is delivered within a student-centred learning modality, with an emphasis on problem-based learning and delivery through student participation. The Faculty of Dentistry at SEGi University is also actively involved in community service. It regularly provides free dental check-ups to the public at its Oral Health Centre at SEGi University, especially to patients from the lower income group. Of course, dental students will be supervised and monitored at all times by dental surgeons, who are also professors and lecturers at the University. Not only will these practical sessions make SEGi dental graduates highly skilled once they complete the programme, it would also ensure their patients of a good treatment and service.

67 | G U S

Pharmacy The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) (BPharm) offered at SEGi is a clinically-oriented 4-year programme. Problembased learning (PBL) and student-centred collaborative learning are implemented throughout the programme. Students are introduced to real practice in the hospitals, community pharmacy and industries since Year 1. This arrangement in the curriculum ensures the students graduate with a feel of almost every possible work setting, have hands-on application of knowledge and benefit from experiential learning.

Optometry and Vision Sciences In order to become an optometrist, an undergraduate would need sufficient clinical training apart from a strong academic grounding. The 4-year SEGi University Bachelor of Optometry (Hons) takes care of both, under its Faculty of Optometry & Vision Sciences. This programme is also fully accredited and approved by MQA. Much of the clinical teaching is undertaken at the in-house Optometry Clinic named SEGi EyeCare, located at SEGi University and also at the neighbouring Tropicana Medical Centre. The clinics have a wide range of ophthalmic equipment for both teaching and research and its primary care optometric centre is opened to public. Clinical experience is also provided to students during their internship at private and public hospitals. Independent clinical and scientific skills are developed in the final year of the programme. They will have the opportunity to examine patients at SEGi’s EyeCare clinics and pursue an area of particular personal interest in more depth through a final year research/dissertation study.

G U S | 68

Biomedical Science Pursuing the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) offered at SEGi University may just be the right route for students who aspire to become a Biomedical Scientist. The 4-year programme is in-line with the National Education Strategic Plan to produce a significant percentage of highquality scientists and researchers in Malaysia. Biomedical Science forms the basis of understanding the human body whereby students will be exposed to various medical diagnostics and also evaluate the effectiveness of treatments. Biomedical scientists can work in the areas of infection sciences, blood sciences and cellular sciences. Upon graduation, graduates will be competent to enter the growing demand of the healthcare industry.

Students can be rest assured that they will be provided with the best possible guidance by academicians, as SEGi only takes in experienced and dedicated educators from respective industries to equip students to be their best. KDU College

Meanwhile, at the bustling central of Damansara Jaya sits KDU College in its iconic blue and white colours. Established in 1983, and a pioneer in Malaysian private education, KDU College was one of the first private colleges in Malaysia to have its own purpose-built campus. The college has definitely come a long remarkable way, it was the first education institution to introduce the concept of overseas twinning programmes to the country through its American Degree Program in 1983 and Business School in 1986. The twinning programmes allowed students to study the first year of a particular degree offered by the overseas twinning university at KDU and then transfer to the university for the later years on successful completion of the first year, which offered significant cost savings and therefore opened up more opportunities to Malaysian youth for overseas studies. With newer and upgraded facilities to match and provide a wholesome quality education experience, the campus continues to be the centre of quality education as it has been playing for the past decades. The Damansara Jaya campus remains as the host for some of its pioneer programmes such as the American Degree Program, in addition to being the centre for all twinning programmes under the School of Pre-University Studies, School of Business and Social Sciences, School of Engineering and Technology, as well as the KDU Law School. The twinning programmes offered at KDU College sees partnership with renowned universities from all across the globe. Long and well established partnerships with these universities have given KDU the expertise needed in determining relevant programmes suited to produce global graduates who are industry-ready. These quality unique programme offerings at both the college and university college, coupled with KDU’s belief of providing real world education to meet real world needs, ensures its students are prepared to hit the ground running and face the robust challenges of the working world.
