A Royal Visit The building naming ceremony at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) received a royal visit from DYYM Raja Permaisuri Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim when she officiated The Tuanku Zara Teaching Centre. The newest teaching block was built to accommodate the growing number of students at UNMC with more flexible learning spaces and allowing a more technology-based learning. It is named after Tuanku Zara Salim who is a first-class graduate in Chemical Engineering at The University of Nottingham, UK.
Race Their Way To Melbourne Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an exciting year for Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s University racing team as they made history in becoming the first racing team from Malaysia to qualify for Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia (Formula SAE-A) competition for the second time in a row. Their Formula Student World Ranking for Combustion Car took a leap to 322 out of 528 teams worldwide, beating top universities including Cambridge. The competition will be held in Melbourne, Australia in December.

The Support for Pediatric Cancer Patients Continues As part of their continuous fight against childhood cancer, KDU pre-U students successfully raised a total of RM13,151 that was handed to University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) Children’s Cancer Fund in a small ceremony. The meaningful event was held at UMMC’s Pediatric Cancer Ward with Dr. Muhammad Yazid as the receiving officer. KDU A-Level student body also toured the ward to pay courtesy visits to the pediatric cancer patients.
Curtin Sarawak Opens the Door for Young Innovators During Curtin Sarawak’s open day, a showcase of magnificent and innovative projects by students of local secondary schools was seen decorated on the halls of Curtin Sarawak. This was the result of the ‘Young Innovate Miri’ programme, formerly known as SAINS on wheels. The project was done to encourage students to acquire skills in coding, 3D design, multimedia production and project management. Featuring 24 teams from 12 secondary schools in Miri, as well as six teams from Curtin Sarawak competing in the Open Category. The top three projects were picked by a panel of judges and sent to the national competition held in Kuala Lumpur at the annual KL Engineering Science Fair (KLESF) this month.

Kejar Kerja Apprenticeship Programme FORWARD and NIVEA recently worked together to provide girls with opportunities to polish their overall prowess and secure a job in this ever competitive creative industries. This programme was dedicated to girls living in Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) in the Klang Valley and Selangor. Shortlisted candidates were given the chance to work with renowned entrepreneurs as mentors such as Chef Adu from The Canteen, Boryeong Mud Facial Spa, Baba Can Cook and Nivea itself. They were given RM250 weekly allowance throughout the apprenticeship. 10

Nights of Fright 4 Sunway Lagoon opened its gate for all horror junkies last month in the light of Halloween. Horror themed attractions were surrounded with legends from Asia, Modern Dystopian and Hollywood and among them were six haunted houses, six scare zones as well as 11 after-dark amusement rides. Rio Carnaval By now we are well informed that Rio knows how to have fun and it’s not staggering that their Rio Carnaval is a must for foreigners. It is considered the worlds’ largest festival with their celebrated street carnival parade filled with performers, the most notable is the samba schools. Accompanied by music, participants are free to sing and dance along with the locals during the parade in Sambadrome or at the balls at the Copacabana Palace.
Glastonbury Glastonbury is a five day festival accentuating contemporary performing arts in the UK including

comedy, theatre, cabaret and lots more. It is also known for featuring a line-up of UK’s biggest names in the music industry including Adele, Ellie Goulding, Of Monsters and Men, and Muse, to name a few. Pilton, Somerset grounds is open to all fans of various arts and the good news is that the money raised for the festival is donated to charity every year.
Oktoberfest Oktoberfest or Wiesn is an annual beer festival and travelling funfair in Munich, Germany. This folk festival is held on the mid to final week of September till the first weekend of October and it is a big part of the Bavarian culture. Simply speaking, Oktoberfest is beer day with side-games, amusement rides and plenty of traditional foods to make the day even more interesting. This festival is also celebrated at other places such as Cleveland and Oregon.
Tomorrowland Electronic music is bulldozing its way around the world and what’s better than losing yourself in the greatness of its creation than being part of Tomorrowland, one of the most hyped electronic music festivals around. Taking place in Belgium, Tomorrowland has been a platform for over 400 DJs to display their work to thousands of audiences and is continuously evolving by expanding their range of underground music.

tretched for sleep and time, participants of this year’s Maybank Go Ahead Challenge (MGAC), were constantly tested for their patience, perseverance and skills. Unexpected assignments, wee hour briefs and early morning presentations were all part of the challenges. One particular challenge most of the participants will never forget would be the Day3 challenge. Participants were informed of their 6am flight to Sarawak a few hours before the flight took off. Considering that most of these participants were urbanites from different parts of the world, they were definitely surprised to arrive at the longhouses in Sibu, Sarawak. “Initially, another party was given the task to plan the trip but it turned out to be too much of a

holiday. We wanted the candidates to experience something which they normally wouldn’t. So we decided to take the planning into our own hands,” shared Ian Chew, who is a member of the 2016 MGAC Organising Committee and in charge of the Sibu leg of the challenge. “It was quite hard to find a suitable location as many of the longhouses were modernised. When we found one that wasn’t too modernised, we couldn’t get to plan any activities due to short time frame. Basically, we were trying to go as rural as possible,” he added. After settling down at their designated sections of the longhouse, participants were introduced to their task. Depending on what team they were in, they would either paint the ceiling of the longhouse, build a
new toilet or lay pavement at the back of the longhouse. “I have experienced painting in rural areas before for charity but this is more exhausting due to it being a larger area as well as the weather,” said Chen Yun from Shanghai, China while taking a break from painting the longhouse, unaware of the more interesting challenges to come. Visiting Malaysia for the first time, 22-year-old Chen Yun will soon graduate with a Master’s degree from Drew University in London, UK.

Meanwhile Arvind, a 23-year-old student pursuing his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, was pleasantly surprised at how much he enjoyed building the toilet together with his fellow teammates. “It was really interesting because I didn’t think it was going to be that hard. When you think about it, people living in areas like these don’t have clean amenities or even a proper sewage system but when you put together a group of 10 people or so, we managed to build an entire toilet. “Granted, it was without the plumbing in place due to lack of expertise on our part, but we essentially put up the entire structure by ourselves in four to five hours. Not many would want it but the ones who did, would probably enjoy it. I know I definitely enjoyed it,” added Arvind.

“Cementing the pathway was quite a challenge due to the scorching heat but when I saw the locals, some of whom were quite old, it pushed me to carry on,” shared Dorry, a Bruneian national who is due to complete her Master’s in Marketing at the International Islamic University of Malaysia this year. Exhausted from the activities of the day, the participants were given yet another surprise in the evening. They were told to prepare dinner and the main ingredient for dinner: chicken! Whether actively participating or observing the catching, killing, and defeathering of the chicken, it’s safe to say that many of them experienced something new that day. “When it came to catching and killing the chickens for dinner, I was fine with going to the barn and catching them but I couldn’t bring myself to participate or even watch the killing. It was tough for me to hold them, knowing the fate that was awaiting them. Having said that, I really enjoyed the activities today as it taught us a lot. The hosts were also very friendly despite the language barrier. They spoke Iban and most of us could only speak Malay and English,” shared Dorry. At this point you may be wondering, at what point will this last activity come in useful for the participants? “We planned the catching and killing of the chickens because we wanted them to experience the local culture. Even for us who were facilitating the challenge, have never killed a chicken before. We wanted them to experience making a meal from scratch.
“It was also great that the longhouses didn’t have electricity and there was a river for the participants to bathe in. We wanted to plan even more activities such as fishing and trying out the blowpipe but were not able execute them due to time constraint,” said Ian.

azz – the music of relaxation, of calmness, sophistication and class. A true connoisseur of jazz and soul, Dani is a girl who would like nothing better than to write her story in songs, pick up her guitar and belt them out in her low voice reminiscent of smooth velvet. Here’s her story as an up-and-rising jazz artist. Tell us a bit about yourself. I was studying psychology and business, but I deferred, to pursue my music career. As far as hobbies go, I really enjoy playing music, and I do art as well, like sketching. Describe your musical style for us. My style is mostly jazz/blues, and sometimes I do lean towards more soulful things. Even when I write my own originals, they feel very jazz-like. I feel very comfortable that way. When it comes to the more blues-y part, I like to try things that are more old-school, more towards the Etta James era, and stuff like that. Where do you usually draw influences from, for your songwriting? If I’m gonna come up with a tune, I’m definitely gonna come up with something that has a jazz vibe to it, or it’ll probably be more blue-sy. But for the lyric writing, it’s usually based on the more personal stuff that I go through. It usually takes a longer time to write the song compared to coming up with the tune. I usually start by coming up with the tune, the bridge and stuff like that, but the words usually take a longer time. Are there any themes that you use in your songs? I wish I didn’t write so much about people, but right now I write a lot about the people in my life.
Which song would you say you were most proud of? I would say ‘Goodbye, moon’, because it’s one of the most emotional songs I’ve written. It was so emotional for me that when I performed it, I almost cried. But after the performance, when I saw the audience, it was like they felt what I was singing. So although it’s a slower song, and I prefer singing songs that are more upbeat, this song really means a lot to me. What motivated you to first begin performing? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but it was also something that I was afraid of doing. So one day, I was at home and my mom was praying. She said this verse, a line that meant “without fear, without hate”. I’m not a religious person, but I really liked that verse. I began doing things that I was afraid of before, and I would try to hate on things less. Eventually I got it tattooed on me to remind myself of it. Then one day, my friend asked if I wanted to do this open mic event, and I said yes to it, and let my future self worry about it. That’s how it all started.The moment I did it though, it felt really good, and I was glad I did it.
Where do you perform, usually? It started out with open mics, then I’ve been getting places that are much bigger. For example, I started out in Merdekarya, and eventually other places like Gaslight and The Bee @ Jaya One. Then I started pushing for bigger places. Is the performing life tough? How do you motivate yourself to stay strong? I don’t think I’ll ever get used to performing live, especially when you sing your originals, because you’re kind of putting yourself out there through your songs. When I’m backstage and I know I’m next, I’m always freaking out, but the moment I’m on stage, the energy is so strong that I don’t really think about the audience anymore. It’s almost as if it doesn’t matter what they think about me. This is what I want to do, and I’m so sure about it that it doesn’t matter if they don’t like me. But when I stop singing and I have to start speaking again, that’s when it all comes back again. *laughs*
Do you have any dream artists you would like to collaborate with? Well the ones that I want to collaborate with are mostly dead… but I guess if there’s anyone I want to collaborate with, it would be Evelyn Feroza. She does really good jazz covers.
What would you say is your ultimate dream as a singer/songwriter? I guess it would be for people to know me as a jazz, blues or soul singer. Like, when they hear my name they’ll say “Oh, I know her, she’s that jazz girl.” I’m not concerned about being super famous. For me, I really want to do jazz and soul. I would appreciate it if I have fans who appreciate that sort of music. To me, that’s enough already.
Do you have any rituals before you perform? If I’m driving to the place in my car then I belt the song as loud as I can. I start off with the slowest songs, then I’ll get to the song which I feel is the highest pitch I’m going to reach, and then I would just stop until I have to perform again.
What advice would you give to people who want to get themselves out there? I would say, if you want to get out there and perform, you’d have to ask yourself how badly do you want it. And if you want it bad enough, you’d automatically do things to reach it.
Which artist would you say inspired you the most, and why? Well initially, I really like listening to Nina Simone, because she had a deep tone in her voice, which is something I was always afraid of doing because I generally have a deep tone when I sing. I was afraid to use it because she already did it back then, and she’s inspired the blacks as well. But after that, I started listening to Amy Winehouse, and seeing how she performed really inspired me. It was only last year that I started taking part in this open mic event, and it was at that point that I decided that I’ll sing with my lower tone instead of trying to sound like the more conventional girl would sound like on radio. So I would say Amy Winehouse.

We sat down with one such vocal coach, the esteemed Prema Yin, to find out more about this job.

Would you say different people have different styles of singing, and how do you deal with each individual? That’s why I prefer to work one-on-one with my students. It makes it much easier to hear each person’s strengths and weaknesses, and I get to concentrate on them and help them improve. For instance, if someone sings with a nasal tone, I will try to make it brighter while keeping the forward resonance. What would you say is the most important technique involved in singing? There are a few things that I feel are very important – one of it is the breathing technique. Many don’t realise it while they’re doing it, but when they sing, their breathing is very shallow. As a result, they don’t have support to hit the high notes, and they don’t have the power and the projection that comes along with it. What we usually do is you keep the shoulders down and the stomach expands when breathing in instead of the chest. When the stomach contracts, slowly release the air through the mouth. So you breathe in through your nose, belly out, and breathe out through your mouth. When hitting those high notes, you don’t want to stretch your head up. By keeping your chin down, you’re telling your brain to keep the pressure down without any strain. The same applies to singing low notes – never compress your neck while you do it.
How long have you been singing? I’ve been singing since I was a kid, it’s been my dream since then. I’ve actually been singing at functions for free. At 16, I got paid for the first time. I was also offered to sing in some bars and hotels, but I was too young. I also entered a singing competition, and from there I started taking gigs. As a vocal coach, how would you describe your job? As a coach, my job is to enhance the way they sing. Usually, people will come to me and say: “I have difficulty hitting certain notes.” So as a coach, it’s my job to hear what’s wrong and what they can adjust. I don’t change the way a person sings and take away their style completely. I try to improve their style to make it better. So, what kind of vocal exercises or practices would you recommend for beginners? I would say, a lot of lip rolls. Lip rolls are really good as it helps you through the bridges; it helps you get over the ‘break’ you have when

you switch from your natural voice to your head voice or falsetto. I find this to be effective to help beginners with the transition. It helps to understand the forward resonance, which is like a pressure in the front, kind of like when you lean forward and you feel your blood rush to the front of your face and head. It’s similar, but not the same. This helps you get across that bridge. Although, some people might find that difficult to do, and they might find tongue trills easier. How about for advanced singers? For me, I think the basics are still important. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, if you don’t have your basics down, at the end you won’t be able to do it. It’s actually harder for advanced singers to learn because they already have their own experiences and habits. So they’ll find it difficult to adjust the way they sing. This is why I prefer working with kids. They haven’t formed as much habits yet. Even for myself, I have my old habits. I have to remind myself not to sing a certain way and correct it mid-song.
What do you think about tone deafness? So far I’ve had a few students who are tone deaf, but only kids. I haven’t had any adults who are tone deaf yet. But I believe that you can groom kids into getting better at hearing notes. It’s basically ear training. What I would usually do is, I would listen to them and from there I’ll slowly get them to get used to a scale and move up once they’re confident. You have to be very patient with them, but you can definitely train them. I’ve even seen people improve from being tone deaf to singing like a rock star. My brother is one of them. *laughs* What advice do you have for any aspiring singers? If you decide to start now, you have to be sure that is what you want to do, because you’ll have a lot of people telling you “it’s not worth it to do this”, “why not do something more constructive”, etc. There will also be a lot of obstacles, and you’ll need to fight through it. The worst part is maintaining your creativity and your passion. But if you’re truly passionate about it, you’ll need to power through all these obstacles.

The one thing we are reminded of this year is that a movie doesn’t have to come from Hollywood for it to be good, so here’s our movie pick from the South Korea, the Land of the Morning Calm. 1
THE WORLD OF US
It’s not often the big screen gives way to child actors to lead the storyline of a movie but The World of Us took that chance with this inspiring and realistic story about a 10year old outcast, Sun finding hope in her newfound friend, Jia, during summer. When troubles seem to be clearing up, the bullying continues after the break. Jia slowly turns her back to join the cool kids that have been bullying Sun at school. This is a story of how friendship can hurt and heal when you least expect it.

When an old Japanese man joined the small community of the peaceful Goksung village, everybody is suspicious of his reserved manner. The town is thrown into panic mode following mysterious and violent deaths. Officer Jung Goo is in charge of the case but when his own daughter starts to show similar symptoms as the other victims, he is forced to work with a shaman to save her whilst investigating the old man. The Wailing made it into the list of top grossing Korean movies and it received 100% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Let’s leave it at that.

immediately. I think it’s a good sign because when I see someone singing, it gives me the impression that they’re happy. When I’m not singing, that’s when you know there’s something wrong.
Seeing as a lot of your inspiration comes when you sit down with your guitar, what was your first guitar and who got it for you? My grandmother actually got me my first guitar when I was 12. It was a black Yamaha. I attended a few guitar lessons before I said to myself, “Nope, I’m just going to play soccer instead.” I then started learning by playing songs. The first song I learned to play on the guitar was Jason Mraz’s ‘I’m Yours’. I learnt how to play the song on YouTube and after some time, I started to get the hang of playing a guitar.
Could you tell us a little bit about the tattoos on your arms and why you got them? The one on my right arm is James Dean and I had a poster of him on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager. I actually love his quote “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.” I was about to get the quote too but this picture in itself is so iconic. When I got my first label deal at the age of 18, I decided to put him on my arm forever to remind myself to live life, enjoy every moment, believe in myself, and believe that everything’s possible. The one on my left hand is my mum and dad.
You’re known for singing everywhere, has there ever been an awkward moment where this happened? I’m actually way past the feeling of awkwardness and don’t really care about it anymore. Singing is like breathing for me – I can’t even help it. There would actually be times when my dad would tell me to stop singing back when I was a kid, especially when we were having dinner, and then I’d apologise and continue humming almost

songwriter, a musician, a producer or something along those lines because music has always been my biggest passion. If you could collaborate with any female artiste, who would it be? Beyoncé. She’s the queen. In terms of a Malaysian artiste, I would say Yuna. Any plans for a full concert in Malaysia any time soon? Nothing specific yet but I will be back for a show. It’s already being planned and will happen possibly at the beginning of next year.
If the label had not signed you six years ago and if you hadn’t gotten into music, what would you be doing? I would probably be in law school right now. That was what I wanted to do because I love reading. Having said that, my best friend is studying law right now and he said that most of it is really boring so it might’ve been too much for me. I’d love to think if I wasn’t a singer, I would be a

The Intouchables: Life’s lemonade
Life is wonderful but it can also be cruel. You blink for a second and the world shifts beneath your feet, leaving you gasping for stability, but what you do moving forward will define your very existence.
F
irst of all, I have to say that watching a film that wasn’t born in Hollywood is like breathing fresh air. Secondly, how is it that French can be so sexy? That was the realisation that hit me in the beginning of The Intouchables. Don’t misunderstand me, the core of this comedy-drama film is far off from romance or love of some sort. It focuses on the unlikely friendship that the universe threw in to make life interesting. Phillipe (François Cluzet) took the grief of losing his wife, up in the air through paragliding, but tragedy struck and he was left paralysed, unable to move his four limbs. Driss (Omar Sy) however, is a delinquent from a broken home 26
and collecting criminal records are his biggest achievement. So when Driss came storming in the middle of interviews for the position of Phillipe’s caretaker to get a signature for his welfare benefit claims, Phillipe was amused by how little Driss cared about his condition. Needing a place to stay, Driss accepted Phillipe’s job offer. The Intouchables was inspired by the true story of Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and his French-Algerian caregiver Abdel Sellou. You would think that Driss’s only motivation is to take advantage of Phillipe’s immense wealth but the story led us to a heart-warming direction where you’ll see Driss being kind
in his care-free way. Phillipe’s willingness to trust Driss and how he responds to all of Driss’s absurd jokes makes them an unlikely great combo. He not only relies on Driss to care about his physical well-being but also other aspects of his life that he unintentionally neglected since the accident and that includes his only daughter. The anchor of the entire film is how Phillipe and Driss support each other especially when it comes to Phillipe’s epistolary relationship with a woman named Eleonore and Driss’s family that he left behind. The script was written to avoid the typical, cliché reactions from the characters and the comedies are not presented

exaggeratingly as seen in other comedy movies. Every communication between characters seems natural and effortless. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty much like watching real peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life rather than actors on screen. The story is told in the form of a flashback starting from a scene where both main characters are involved in a police car chase. The anticipation and the character build-up is worth watching. The most important message one can learn from this film is to make the best out of life and to enjoy every moment without taking them too seriously. Even though the film is not leading to a fancy climax, the unruffled plot makes it a great movie for a light evening in bed.

Pras: There was once, we were playing the closing song to our set, where we just went nuts, and we weren’t really thinking. We put our guitars against each other and my strings snapped. Maha: That would be finishing our album and the main thing that stopped us would be the funds to actually do it. We don’t want it to be anything less than we know it can be. Pras: Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin. It’s perfect to describe the shows we’ve played this year from Hard Rock Café to Merdekarya. In terms of the animal, we’d say a honey badger. Axam: We would tour internationally and have a solid fan base. Along with his perfectly chilled personality; Isaac’s soothing voice, guitar playing, and songs will send you into a relaxed mood almost immediately, making it impossible for one to be antsy around him. WHAT WAS THE WEIRDEST THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU THIS YEAR? Okay, the weirdest thing would be the gig I had in Redang – the customers got drunk, and they were very violent. They shouted at me for not playing their songs, they came on stage and just grabbed the mic from me and sang. That’s one of the worst weirdest experiences I’ve had in a gig. IF YOU WERE GIVEN ONE CHANCE TO CHANGE ONE THING IN 2016, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I wish I could change my time being idle to time I used to practice more. It would’ve been good if I had put more time into practice, and better my skills.
NAME A SONG AND AN ANIMAL THAT DESCRIBES YOUR YEAR, AND WHY? I’d say a salmon fish. Because salmons go through a lot of stuff before they come back to their place of origin. I feel similar because there were times when I wanted to give up and just take a steady, full-time job. But at the end of the day, it goes back to me wanting to perform full-time. So it’s like a cycle – I’ll leave, but then I’ll come back to my desire to perform. For a song, I’d say Owl City’s ‘Beautiful Time’, because the song narrates that there are tough times for everyone, and it’s about how you keep on going despite all the hard things. So I think that describes me for this year. IF YOU KNEW THAT THE WORLD WOULD COME TO AN END IN SIX MONTHS, WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO ACCOMPLISH AS ARTISTES? I’d like to play in at least one music festival. A big one! Because having recordings and demos are nice, but nothing beats the feeling of having a live music performance. arah Jade Quartet is a band made up of four friends sharing a similar passion for music. A blend of vocals, ukulele, guitar, violin and percussion, SJQ is a visionary band creating fusions of music that are pleasant to our ears. Freshly formed last May, Sarah, Lux, Nate and BK are just warming up to leave their mark in the music industry and hopefully, their dream stage. I think it’s prioritising. Working sucks your soul and it’s difficult to get inspired as well. We also wished we had more time to practice and it would’ve been nice if we’ve gotten more exposure. Sarah: I think for me it’s been a lot of growth and pushing a lot of my limits whether it’s music, career, or personality. I wouldn’t have
expected that I can deal with a lot of what’s happened this year, last year. Lux: Prepare for the unknown because it’s been such an unpredictable year. I wouldn’t have expected it; graduating and looking for jobs. I am literally split into three locations to balance out my professional life in Singapore, my friends and family in Malaysia, and my relationship in Australia. Nate: Personally I think I managed to plan my productivity. I managed to achieve more things in a sense that I’m more organised and aware of what I’m supposed to do. So it’s been a decent year for me. IF YOU KNEW THAT THE WORLD WOULD COME TO AN END IN SIX MONTHS, WHAT IS THE ONE THING THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO ACCOMPLISH AS ARTISTES? WHAT WAS THE WEIRDEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU THIS YEAR AS AN ARTISTE? For me, it’s being recognised. This past year was the year where people started recognising me on the streets. It’s a bit weird having strangers come up to me to say hi but I like it. IF YOU WERE GIVEN ONE CHANCE TO CHANGE ONE THING IN 2016, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Write a song. I wish I pushed myself more in that sense. I always tell myself that I’m working on it but ultimately I need to push myself more. I get distracted easily and time management is really something that I need to get a grasp on as I’ve been having a lot going on lately. IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME TO DECEMBER 2015, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE 2016 TO YOURSELF? It’s a rough year but it comes with selfrealisation. He has since wowed people with sounds of percussion that many did not know can be made with the human mouth, and has even once opened for Wang Lee Hom. I think one of the weirdest things was when my friend shouted “chicken shit!” 2 seconds right before I got hit by a huge lunk of bird dropping on my head. It was the funniest, most coincidental thing that has happened in my entire life. Haven’t laughed so hard in ages. IF YOU WERE GIVEN ONE CHANCE TO DO ONE THING IN 2016, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE? Nothing. To me, there are only two types of regrets: 1. The regret of doing it. 2. The regret of not doing it. I always pick 2. Flash is a new player in town compared to more well-known brands but it doesn’t lose when it comes to creating a good performance and affordable smartphones.

Display and Sound
The design is made perfect to fit your hand with a 5’5 screen made of thick glass in the flat back shade. The biggest improvement from the original Flash Plus in terms of the design is the premium metal framework installed as the back panel that comes in two shiny colours, Luna Silver and Venus Gold. Although the aesthetic is far better with a slight curved at the sides for better ergonomics, I must say that it took a while to figure out how to open the back panel as it is tightly sealed. There are two SIM slots and a microSD expansion slot added inside the main body whereas the speaker is placed at the bottom of the back panel. You can find the power and volume buttons on the right side of the phone where the former is on top of the other. A new addition to this Flash series is a fingerprint scanner on the physical home button on the bottom of the front panel. The fingerprint scanner can store up to five sets of unique prints and you can customise different applications to display depending on the fingerprint.
The display comes with a full HD resolution which is translated into 1920x1080 pixels. The screen looks satisfying and the adjustable brightness is available to alter the screen light to your liking. Colour-wise, it is not exactly lucid but it is set fairly for a pleasant view. Flash Plus 2 highlight its Hi-Fi audio quality with dual speakers installed at the back.

It’s quite disappointing as it does not produce great quality photos when it is a highly promoted feature. However, it is still considered decent when taken its price into account. The camera can also record videos in HD at 30 frames per second and that’s about it.
Performance To improve performance, this phone is equipped with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal
memory with an extra memory slot that allows up to 128GB memory expansion. It is powered up using a 64 Bit Helio P10 octa-core processor paired with Mali T860 GPU that is set to give you a satisfying performance and good gaming experience but we must say that it fell short in terms of overall performance as it is a bit lagging when changing between applications and it is not as powerful as its predecessor. However, basic tasks can still be done at an average speed.

feel left out, as the Paneer & Mango (RM29) is sure to excite your taste buds. The Angus Slider (RM36) with the homemade patty was fresh and left us eager to try out the mains. Opting for a carb-rich, leaner option, we chose the anecdotal Tuna Villa Gajah (RM52) best described as an unlikely marriage between two very different people. While this dish is notable for the freshness of its sashimi tuna, the flavours could be a little more cohesive, in our opinion. Chef Vic shared that this recipe was concocted by Navin during a holiday in Bali. Other musttries on our list include the Taiping Duck & Garlic Rice (RM52) and the Wagyu Gula Melaka (RM188) and vegetarians should not miss the Spinach & Shrooms Rigatoni (RM42). Finally deciding to unleash our carnivorous tendencies, we chose the Dropper Lamb Done Two Ways (RM172). This dish is perfect for sharing and we have to say that the plating is beyond impressive. New Zealand lamb rack and loin cuts served on a bed of baby Chinese kale with king oyster mushroom with a heap of delectable pumpkin mash. The first thing that struck us was how perfectly smooth and deliciously smoky the mash was – which in our opinion was perfection. The lamb rack was simply out of this world perfectly marinated with the chef’s special secret blend of paprika and cumin marinade. The loin cuts were tender, simply seasoned with salt and pepper thus preserving its natural flavour. The coriander pesto could easily be the star of this dish – bursting with flavour and complementing the meatiness of the lamb excellently. Once again vegetarians can opt for the Mossy Forest Pita (RM66) that comes with roasted tomato confit and hummus. Manja does not compromise on its loyalty towards local flavours, not even in its beverages. The Malaysian Maid (RM29) is made from tuak, lime, sugar and mint, and is perfectly refreshing. The Oriental Peck (RM33) is a mix of sake, lemon, sugar and crème de mure while the Guava & Rum (RM29) is strong yet distinctively fruity. The nonalcoholic Mint Teaser (RM22) serves as a perfect palate cleanser. Manja is consistently commendable for its efforts in taking traditional, everyday delights to new heights, and this shows right down to its desert menu. The Teh Tarik On Toast (RM32) is a bold spin on the typical Malaysian tea time – house churned teh tarik ice cream served with kaya on focaccia slices. The bitter sweetness of the strongly flavoured tea ice cream complements the sweetness of the kaya toast. Cinematography and artwork in anime have always been incredibly brilliant. You can only wish to be thrown into the fictitious world to experience it first hand. 1. 5 Centimeters Per Second Every creation in this anime has its meanings and that include the landscape as well as the weather that carries the emotions of the characters. The artwork in itself is at a different level. Capturing first love and first heartbreak as its theme, this anime is layered with stunning backgrounds; cheery blossoms and trains moving amongst them. Additionally, this anime has also received great reviews for its ability to touch the audience.
2. Spirited Away A world of spirits is brought to life in Spirited Away. A young girl trapped in the spirit world is forced to work in a bathhouse in order to find a way to break free and return to the human world. The creator, Hayao Miyazaki, who is very fond of museums due to the nostalgic feeling he feels during his visits, translated it into the anime. Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum and a traditional Japanese inn, Notoyaryokan are some of the buildings that inspired Miyazaki.
3. Garden of Words From the same guy that created 5 centimetres per second, Makoto Shinkai sprinkled his magic in another short movie, Garden of Words. It follows the fateful meeting of a school student and a middle-aged woman on a rainy day at a 60
local park. With the talent of bringing his artwork to life, Garden of Words matches a projection of a well-designed dream. It’s definitely a feast to the eyes. The Japanese garden where these two characters met is constantly showered with rain that represents a dome that shelters them from the reality of their lives. The Garden of Words is

recommended to those with an appreciation for art.
4. Kill la Kill Kill la Kill is a subtle story of the fascism in a fictional high-school dictated by the menacing student council inspired by Japanese history in modernising the country by evolving the school uniforms in a military-like design. Garnering positive reception from critics, the anime is packed with gripping scenes in a high-school that oddly resemble a beautifully put together modern military base. Though highly

illogical, this anime definitely belong in our top spot.
5. Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist) I just can’t exclude Blue Exorcist the Movie, simply because, it’s captivating backgrounds will leave you in awe. Your favourite brothers, Rin and Yukio, returns in yet another exhilarating adventure. The production is done to perfection in terms of cinematography and animation. The details placed into every piece of brick and metal used in the building is amazing and it is translated throughout the movie. A must for Ao no Exorcist fans!

The Village Of Forgetfulness
Hogewey is a nice little village in Amsterdam, complete with a supermarket, stores, a theatre and a barber shop. It is extremely pleasing, and has about 152 residents living in it. But there is one thing about this village that is different from normal villages: it is actually a village specially made for dementia and Alzheimer patients. Everything in the village is arranged so that it is prepared to give residents all the care they need, but while allowing patients to believe that they are still living in real village. All the staff, such as the supermarket cashier, restaurant manager and hair dresser all work incognito, and are all specially trained to care for people with dementia. This approach, as opposed to nursing homes, is a much kinder approach to care for old folks, allowing the freedom to walk around outside, shop, visit friends and relax instead of just being confined in a tight space at all times.
Every single computer in existence has a way of cooling down – either by a bunch of fans in their CPU, or a liquid cooling system for the richer folks amongst us. However, have you ever seen a CPU that is submerged in liquid oil as a cooling system? You can even add bubbles machines to make it look like an actual bubbling fish tank (minus the fish). This works as the heat will transfer to the surrounding oil, and will dissipate through fans and radiators, leaving it cool again. This is possible because mineral oil is not conductive, and hence would not cause the components to short circuit. However, there can be many drawbacks to this method – you can’t over-clock your PC (send it into overdrive), it’s incredibly troublesome to maintain and clean up, and it weighs a tonne because it’s ultimately filled with heavy liquid. But hey, all those inconveniences might just be worth it if you’re into having a fishless fish tank for a computer.
Venom Man Imagine walking back home from school or work, and in the bushes, you see a snake slowly slithering towards you. One’s natural reaction would be to either slowly back off and hope it doesn’t see you, or run away screaming and hope it’s not as fast as you. However, Tim Friede from the U.S is one guy that would do the complete opposite, and is willingly to let them bite him. Since he was young, Friede has built up a tolerance to the venoms of some of the world’s most poisonous snakes by subjecting himself to controlled doses of snake venom injections and snake bites. He is now completely immune to the poison of snakes, and can even take bites from the world’s most poisonous snake, the Black Mamba, whose bites will kill a normal human in 20 minutes. He is now working with immunologists to find out how to help third-world countries develop vaccines for snake attacks.
