It’s (Almost)
A Wrap!
I
t’s finally here, the most wonderful time of the year. For most of you, the important stuff (assignments, exams) are done and over with and school’s finally out! So maybe it’s time to put on your dancing shoes and party like there’s no tomorrow. In this issue, we’ve got six whole pages worth of partying like there’s no tomorrow, featuring some of the biggest music festivals around the world and even within the region. Ever dreamed of someday going to Tomorrowland? Have you wondered what it’d be like to rock up to Stereosonic? Electronic dance music fans are going to appreciate this one, from pages 38 till 43. While we’re on the topic of partying, our Goldfish & Blink exclusive is also out this month, featured in our “Career Chat” pages. Malaysia’s most loved homegrown DJ/producer duo dish the dirt on what it’s like to have finally found their calling, do what they love, and get paid for it! If you love making music as much as they do, then turn to pages 44 and 45 for the lowdown on being a DJ/producer and working your way to potentially getting signed. But all’s not always fun and games – we’ve also prepared the ultimate festival essentials on page 54. You know, just a handy list of things to best prepare you for what could be the best time of your life. We’re also best preparing you for the not-so-great stuff on page 55, where we had some students confess their most embarrassing partying incidents in our “Campus Talk”. On top of that, we found some tips and tricks of the trade in curing the post-party blues on page 65. You didn’t think we were just going to leave you hanging, did you? Also, since Christmas is only a few weeks away, we’ve got the perfect beauty gift ideas in our Sephora holiday spread on pages 24 and 25. You will love it, your girl friends will love it, and you’ll most definitely love us for it. Don’t say we didn’t share! And guys - we’ve packed up our “Wired Up” section with 12 days of Christmas gifts especially for the gadget freaks. Yes, you’re welcome. And now we can finally say it. It’s a wrap!
Yours in cheerful unweirdness,

Cross-border Study Tour
30 Inti students gained a valuable cross-cultural educational experience through a three-day trip to Bangkok, Thailand, that also provided international exposure and opportunities for innovative learning, individual development and networking. Together with their counterparts and hosts from Stamford International University in Bangkok, which like Inti, is a part of the global Laureate International Universities network, the students were exposed to diverse work cultures and businesses in various settings. Their experience in Bangkok, now a force in finance and business and an international hub for transport and health care, provided beneficial insights to prepare them for careers in a borderless global economy. Closer to home, Inti’s Mass Communication students took part in a forum with the theme, The Art of Vikingdom, which introduced the key people behind the production of Vikingdom which has been dubbed “the Malaysian-made film for a global audience”. The students were impressed by the fact that the action movie was produced almost exclusively by a Malaysian crew in Malaysia for world-wide distribution. The Biggest
“1 Malaysia Kolam Art” Students from KDU Penang’s Indian Cultural Society went all out to ensure that this year’s Deepavali celebration will be truly memorable by creating the biggest “1 Malaysia Kolam Art” at D’Piazza Mall in Penang. In undertaking the event, the students hoped to create greater awareness about the importance of unity through the spirit of 1Malaysia as well as the uniqueness of Malaysia’s multi-cultural society. The students also hoped that their supersized “kolam” creation will make it to the Malaysia Book of Records as the “Biggest 1 Malaysia Logo Kolam”. According to project director Jagadaes Thurairaju, the “kolam” is commonly known as rice art and is a form of decorative painting which is drawn using natural or synthetic coloured rice, chalk and rock powder. It is widely practised by Hindu families during the festive season to embellish their houses or courtyards and is spiritually believed to bring prosperity to their homes by the Goddess. A whopping 200 KDU Penang students of various races took part in creating the super-sized 1 Malaysia Kolam. Joey Phuah, manager of KDU Penang’s Student Service Department, is proud of the students’ determination to top the current record of 43 X 17.2 metres by creating one measuring 55m X 25m, using 2,000kg of rice.

Transforming Stories Into Magical Worlds
With Nicolas Imhof

He motivated the students to strive for excellence in their endeavour for marvellous artistry, with which designers can turn the wildest ideas into silver screen blockbusters. Armed with extensive experience in the digital art industry, including seven years of concept arts drawing and production design in the Hollywood, Imhof is back in Malaysia for yet another round of the masterclass titled “From Story to Drawing”, which saw overwhelming attendance by Digital Animation and Illustration students. Looking at the growing consumption and demand for video content in Malaysia, Yahoo announced an interestingly titled short film competition, “Yahoo-Mas CiliPadi Awards”. Named to signify that even tiny fruits like chilli padi, can metaphorically “Blow your brains”, Yahoo invited filmmakers (both amateurs and professionals) to produce movies under three minutes and enter the fray for prizes, in cash, kind, and above all, fame. Malaysians above the age of 18 just had to upload their short films of up to three minutes on www. cilipadiawards.com. But that’s not all – participants also had a panel of judges to impress, including film aficionados like Lisa Surihani and Sharifah Amani, as well as Marc Lourdes (Country Editor of Yahoo Malaysia), and Khairul Syahar Khalid (Head of Advertising & Promotions Dept, Malaysia Airlines). Winners then stand to bring home RM20,000 with the second and third place finishers receiving RM12,000 and RM8,000 respectively. In addition, the winning team would also score an internship at leading Malaysian production company KRU Studio. The “cherry on top”, however, is the fact that TGV Cinemas came on board as a grand platform of exposure to the winning films, airing the winning films across their cinemas nationwide for a period of three weeks.

Known for her sultry voice and attention-grabbing outfits, Rihanna a.k.a. RiRi continues to sell records like hotcakes but she has also recently landed
herself in some hot soup! During her “Diamonds World Tour” in Abu Dhabi, the sexy pop superstar paid a visit to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, a popular tourist attraction, with two photographers in tow for an impromptu photo shoot. Except, it wasn’t an authorised one. While RiRi abided by the mosque’s dress code rules and donned a black jumpsuit and a matching black hijab (traditionally worn by Muslim women) for the shoot, the mosque’s authorities weren’t impressed. They said in a statement, “She first arrived at an entrance that was not designated for visitors and without any previous coordination with the administration. She was confronted by the mosque officials and directed to the appropriate entrance to the mosque, to carry out a visit under the normal conditions. She was asked to leave before entering the actual mosque, after taking some photos that did not fit within the rules and regulations set out to preserve the sacredness of the centre”. The 25-year-old singer also posted up the seemingly suggestive pictures that were taken at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre on both Twitter and Instagram, which caused a further uproar among netizens. There was even one showing RiRi lying on her back in the mosque’s courtyard. No, Rihanna. Just no.

Thirsty For
Thirst 2013
The annual massive December party is back and this year’s instalment will feature an even more stellar line-up than the last. In 2012, artistes Avicii, Justive, and Above & Beyond brought the house down in the presence of 28,000 revellers. And now, Thirst returns on 14th December 2013 (Saturday) at Sepang International Circuit with what would be its most extensive and eclectic list of stars to date who’ll be playing across two impressive stages. Thirst 2013 will feature David Guetta, who played in Sepang International Circuit in 2012 and left a lasting impression among partygoers. Well, the good news is, he’s coming back armed with more chart-topping hits. Internationally known crowd pleaser Armada Music boys W&W will also be taking over one of the two stages, ready to get Malaysians on their feet for an incredible night of music. The acts are also accompanied by Australian twin sisters, NERVO, as well as many more great artistes to be revealed soon! If we know the Thirst party series well enough, this year’s event is not one you’d want to miss. Presale tickets (RM148) are available on www.boxtix.asia and at all Rock Corner outlets. Don’t say we didn’t share! For more information, visit www.thirst.com.my.
Almost
Officially Kimye!
When proposing to a princess who loves luxury, the proposal would need to be just as luxurious, if not more. One American rapper got that part down pat and it’s none other than Yeezus a.k.a. Kanye West. He made sure to pull out all the stops when it came to his lavish surprise proposal to reality TV star, Kim Kardashian. In fact, because he couldn’t do it just anywhere, he rented out the entire stadium where the San Francisco Giants play and personally chartered a private jet to shuttle guests to and from the Bay Area. The momentous occasion came when he got down on one knee and proposed to Kim with the help of a 50-piece orchestra, family, friends, and a flawless 15-carat diamond ring by celebrity jeweller Lorraine Schwartz. Behind him, the field’s jumbo screen flashed the sign, “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!” To which Kim responded with a smile that went from ear to ear while the Kardashians and their nearest and dearest were all left in tears. For one giant good reason, of course! After which, Kim continued to be on cloud nine during the celebratory party, which was held immediately following the proposal. She also gushed to E! News exclusively, “Last night was truly magical! I am the luckiest girl in the world. I get to marry my best friend!” Aww. Congratulations to the soon-to-be-wed cute couple!

NEWS FROM THE SPORTING ARENA
DECEMBER 2013
Sepang To Host Malaysian MotoGP™ Until 2016 Dorna Sports is pleased to announce that the Sepang International Circuit will be hosting the MotoGP™ World Championship for another three years, ensuring the race will be held in Malaysia until at least 2016. The popular track with both riders and teams, which has been on the MotoGP™ calendar since 1999, will play host to the premierclass, along with Moto2™ and Moto3™, until 2016 for certain. Last year, the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix attracted record spectators of 125,000 over the three days with Dorna, the exclusive rights holder acknowledging the event as The Best Grand Prix of the Year. This year, with extensive regional promotions and the unprecedented representation of six Malaysian riders, the motorcycle event is expected to attract an even larger crowd with 95% of the available 80,000 tickets for Sunday’s race day already sold. The extension also means Malaysia will be able to continue with its proud heritage of hosting the Malaysian Grand Prix for the last 23 years. More importantly, the extension carries added meaning to the role of SIC as headquarters for the impending Shell Advance Asian Talent Cup, which will be held right after the Shell Advance Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix. For more information, visit www. sepangcircuit.com.
Red Bull Air Race World Championship is Back Come February, the Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be back in the skies with a full seven-race World Championship staged in six countries on three continents. The series will be back with the defending World Champion in the 12-pilot field after it took a three-year break to improve safety and reorganise. There will be a number of technical improvements, including standard engines and propellers for all pilots, changes to the lightweight nylon pylon material to make them even easier to burst apart if they are clipped by plane wings and raising the height of the pylons that the pilots pass through from 20 to 25 metres. The modus and rules have also been tightened, for example to prevent any pilots from exceeding the set limits. The Red Bull Air Race World Championship features the world’s best race pilots in a pure motor-sport competition that combines speed, precision and skill. Using the fastest, most agile and lightweight racing planes, pilots navigate a low-level aerial track made up of air-filled pylons 25m high. There are several rules and safety changes compared to the last race three years ago, but one thing remains the same: The Red Bull Air Race is the most thrilling motor sports competition in the sky. DECEMBER 2013
Be Blemish Free!
Acne is a common disease which mostly affects skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles; these areas include the face, the upper part of the chest, and the back. TIPS
I
t occurs most commonly during adolescence or periods of hormonal change, and tends to disappear over time. However, adult acne breakouts are common too. We seek advice from experts in Papulex, a dermocosmetic brand to help reduce the appearance of blemishes in cases of acne-prone skin. C+: What are the different forms of acne that we should be aware about that are common among both teenagers and adults? P: Acne in various forms is defined primarily by the size of the spots and whether it is “inflammatory” or “noninflammatory”. Non-inflammatory acne is the start of acne with the smallest type of lesion, called a microcomedone. This is just the beginning of acne formation. Depending on the growth of this microcomedone, it may develop into an open comedone (blackhead) or closed comedone (whitehead). Inflammatory acne is characterised by an inflammation of existing comedones caused by P. acnes bacteria. Red spots appear: “pustules” if they are near the skin surface and “papules” (pimples) if inflammation is deeper.
26
| CAMPUS PLUS
C+: Is there a different way to counter or to clear different forms of acne? P: Treatment is dependent on the severity and forms of acne. Your healthcare provider would be able to advise you on the best treatment for you. C+: Why Papulex is effective to clear acne? P: PAPULEX is an effective treatment to deal with multiple root causes of persistent acne: inflammation of affected areas, proliferation of P.acnes bacteria and increased sebum production. (Refer to “PAP Clear Skin 3 ways model” diagram). PAPULEX effectively reduces breakouts and it fits easily into your daily skin care regimen to improve complexion. PAPULEX helps you to cleanse, protect, and keep acne-prone skin looking good.
With some effort and the right therapy, you can have the power to successfully manage your acne. Here are some tips: i) Use a gentle cleanser. Choose a soap-free cleanser that does not dry up your skin. Facial scrubs, astringents and masks generally tend to irritate skin, which worsens acne. ii) Choose skincare products that are oil-free and avoid cosmetics or skincare products which contain irritants such as strong fragrances because these can clog your skin. iii) Watch what touches your face. Keep your hair clean and away from your face; oil and dirt in hair can transfer to your facial skin and cause more acne. iv) Most importantly, do not pick or squeeze blemishes as it can cause infection and scarring.

Fashion Fades but Style is Eternal!
MAY AND ELIZA
They are not just about trends, but also about creating culture. A culture where girls and women from all over the world feel confident and collectively express themselves with fashion. It’s not just about wearing the prettiest or trendiest clothes; it’s also about being comfortable with who you really are. With this mission in mind, two restless college mates – Eliza and May came together to bring the very best in fashion for girls all over the world!
Q: A:
Partying is hard work, what are the dressing essentials for the occasion? When it comes to painting the town red, nothing is more essential than having that Little Black Dress. It’s the easiest piece to mix and match with! And there’s no such thing as too many. Of course, you can always experiment with tops and bottoms and other forms of party-worthy dresses. Our favourite? Sequins! If you’re the type of gal who can’t leave her bag at home, we’d suggest a nifty little clutch to carry all your essentials. Pull on a comfy pair of heels, and you’re good to go!
Q: A:
What would you say are some fab year end trends? We’re looking at a mix of really interesting textures. Loads of velvet, leather, ruffles and tons of glitz and glam. After all, the end of the year is when the fanciest parties are in town, and that’s why everything in our Year End Collection is splashed with sequins, glitters, embellishments, velvets and leathers. Anything that spells A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E is certainly on trend for the year’s end.
Q: A:
For classier events, how can we look elegant without compromising comfort? For maximum comfort and class, pull on a maxi dress - the flowy kind that only skims across the curves of your body instead of a figure hugging bodycon. If you’re looking for something little shorter, choose an outfit with a bit of a skater cut. As for shoes, try not to overkill it with heels that are far too high. The most important thing here is to look and feel good about you.

Q: A:
Q: A:
Ladies love heels but their feet hurt after wearing them for long hours. Any suggestions on picking the right pair of heels? If you’re really afraid of straining your feet, try getting a lower heel. Platform wedges are also known to provide more support than killer heels. You can also try low-heeled boots (or flat ones, depending on your look and your comfort limitations). However, if you’re really not comfortable with even the slightest bit of heel, flats are fine too. Try embellished ballet flats totally party-worthy! Going all out on accessories, yay or nay? It depends on what look you’re going for. If sophistication and elegance is what you want to project, then we would suggest you keep the accessories to a bear minimal. However, if you’re the adventurous type who loves being the centre of attention, then by all means, go nuts!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAIR OF FORMAL SHOES
DECEMBER 2013
A GUIDE TO
MEN’S DRESS SHOES Formal men’s shoes should be part of every man’s shoe collection in the contemporary world. Although the price is heftier, they usually last longer and are exquisitely designed. Most people tend to make bad purchases by buying shoes based on its colour or style. Here are some factors to consider before venturing out on getting a pair of dress shoes. LEVELS OF FORMALITY Black, lace-up, rounded-toe Oxford style in smooth, unadorned leather is generally the most acceptable style for formal occasions. • In this new era, loafers or slip-ons are also designed to be worn for black tie and semiformal evening affairs. • Shoes that are considered less dressy include rough-grained leather, extra detailing or perforations, and rubber soles. • Brown shoes are usually less formal and don’t always coordinate well with black pants but you can wear them with earth tones. • Oxblood or burgundy shoes match perfectly with navy or grey pants and suits. •
INSOLE • Ditch shoes with insoles made from cardboard or synthetic materials. • Leather insoles are more durable and allow your feet to breathe which helps reduce perspiration and odour. LINING • Soft calfskin lining is common. • The lining should be finely stitched, barely noticeable and smooth at the seams. • Rough edges or knots and bumps in the leather will make shoes very uncomfortable to wear.
OUTSOLE AND HEEL Quality workmanship means leather for the outsole and heel as it’s more durable and keeps the shoes from wearing out too soon. • They can have one to three layers and all should be well-stitched with the tight stitching hidden within the channels along the edges of the soles. • The heel should be layered and attached to the sole with brass nails. • The layers provide an extra level of cushioning, giving better support and more flexibility. • Well-crafted leather soles and heels act like shock absorbers for your feet. • NO GLUE ALLOWED. •
LEATHER QUALITY MATTERS EXTERIOR • The finest leather is fine-grained and feels smooth and supple to the touch. • Calfskin is one of the finest as it is very fine grained and has a nice sheen. • Fine leather has few or no blemishes. • Shiny usually equals more formal but watch out for those covered with artificial sealants.
36
| CAMPUS PLUS
CHOOSING COMFORTABLE MEN’S DRESS SHOES It should properly fit your unique feet to avoid any discomfort. • For those with high foot arches, look for shoes with sturdy insoles for support. • Everyone should look for shoes that are shaped to match the contours of their particular feet. • Rubber soles may be less formal but it provides an extra level of comfort that can come in handy if you plan to be on your feet for long hours or if there are slippery floors at the venue. There’s nothing wrong with sacrificing a little dressiness for safety and comfort. •
TAKING GOOD CARE OF YOUR GOOD SHOES Invest in cedar shoe trees to maintain their shape as the pair sits idle in your closet, absorb moisture and keep the shoes smelling good. • In between shoe-shines, wiping your leather shoes with a dry, clean cloth should keep them looking great. •

MYTHS AND FACTS OF
CIGARETTE AND SHISHA/HOOKAH MYTH #1
Everyone knows how bad smoking is.
FACT #1
MYTH #1
Shisha smoke is least addictive than cigarette because there is no nicotine.
Everyone knows smoking is bad for health. But people tend to believe that smoking is harmless because the effect of smoking is seen much later. Cigarettes contain harmful substances that damage almost every organ in the body.
Shisha contains nicotine. In fact, smokers are exposed to 100 to 200 times more smoke volume than a cigarette.
Just a few cigarettes a day cannot hurt.
Hookah smoke is filtered through water so it filters out the harmful ingredients.
MYTH #2
FACT #2
Research has shown that smoking even a few cigarettes a day can increase your risk to heart diseases, tobacco related diseases and shortens your life span.
FACT #1
MYTH #2 FACT #2
Smoking tobacco through water does not filter out cancer-causing chemicals.

Europe – Tomorrowland For four nights and three days annually on the last weekend of July, a small town in Belgium called Boom claims centre stage as the world’s 24-hour party hub. That’s when the best dance festival on the planet takes over. With a line-up that consists of “The Avengers” equivalent of DJs/producers/electronic artistes, Tomorrowland is a mix of electronic dance music subgenres such as house, dubstep, electro, hardstyle, trance, etc. coupled with magnificent and extremely detailed themes. The event, which easily attracts more than 180,000 people from over 245 countries, even includes a huge “camp out” called “Dreamville” where 50,000 attendees would turn up to camp for “The Gathering”, a pre-party before the actual event. On average, there are about 14 stages at Tomorrowland where many artistes perform simultaneously. Tomorrowland is perhaps the only festival that has a record time tickets sell out (within minutes of its release), half a year prior to the event. This year, an estimated 1.8million people were trying to get the 80,000 tickets on sale without knowing the exact artiste line-up. Such is the strength of Tomorrowland’s branding!

US – Ultra Music Festival Held in March at the 12.4-hectare Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami, Ultra Music Festival (UMF) is an annual outdoor electronic music festival that attracts up to 55,000 people a day over three days. In 2013, for the first time in festival history, UMF made a swift expansion move and the festival was held over two weekends instead of just one. Over these two weekends, UMF saw the recordbreaking attendance of 330,000 revellers and banging sets by world-class DJs/producers such as Hardwell, Porter Robinson, deadmau5, Madeon, Swedish House Mafia, and Tiësto. Just like the godfather of all music festivals, Tomorrowland, UMF also has recorded epic tickets sell-out time when presale tickets for UMF 2014 were sold out in a matter of seconds the moment it went on sale in, get this, May 2013. And if those aren’t reasons enough to call it the biggest US-based music festival, the future’s also looking bright for UMF as it continues its expansion to hotspots including Ibiza, Spain; Buenos Aires, Argentina; São Paulo, Brazil; and Seoul, South Korea, just to name a few. Held in December every year at Sentosa’s Siloso Beach, the two-day rain or shine festival has been known to attract up to 40,000 partygoers with offerings of performances by mainstream DJs/producers from around the globe. Some of the many popular names that have played at the vibrant, 12-hours dusk-to-dawn ZoukOut over the years are such as Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Above & Beyond, David Guetta, Hardwell, and more. Even our homegrown boys, Malaysian DJ duo Goldfish & Blink has made a special appearance at the festival. Malaysian revellers like 24-year-old Andrew Ang says he loves ZoukOut for its beautiful beach setting as well as the crowd – a melting pot of Asian, Western, and other ethnics. “I never miss a single year of ZoukOut because where else can you find such an epic round-the-clock beach party that’s almost quite literally at your doorstep? Plus, ZoukOut is known to be kind of a safe haven for partygoers like me with great security and tight rules – almost nothing will go wrong or try to ruin your experience”, Andrew adds. This year, ZoukOut promises an equally exciting journey with extended party hours coupled with the top names in dance music such as Martin Solveig, Nervo, Dash Berlin, Otto Knows, Krewella, Ferry Corsten, Zedd, Alesso, and more. Malaysia – Future Music Festival Asia After two successful runs in Malaysia, Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA), an expansion of Future Music Festival in Australia, will return again with a three-day affair from 13th-15th March 2014 at Mines Wonderland. Earlier in March 2013, FMFA drew a crowd of 55,000 over two days, with 30,000 attendees celebrating the first ever “A State of Trance” (one of the most popular electronic dance music shows in the world with an estimated listenership of 25 million people from 26 countries worldwide) show in Malaysia. With that, FMFA has been dubbed as the largest music festival to hit Southeast Asian shores – and for good reasons! FMFA 2014 is targeting a massive turnout of 75,000 fans, including an influx of 20,000 tourists, with what is said to be its biggest line-up to date. This includes “A State of Trance 650”, helmed by Armin van Buuren, as well as other A-list acts across multiple stages such as deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Wu-Tang, Paul van Dyk, Arty, Porter Robinson, Knife Party, and more to be announced soon. “From US to Indonesia, music lovers are crossing out their calendars for the coming festival and we can only get better from here on. This will be the largest music festival in Southeast Asia and we guarantee it will be a mind-blowing three-day event”, mentioned Iqbal Ameer, Director of Livescape Asia. PARTY SMART, PARTY SAFE
DECEMBER 2013
W
ith the exciting line-up of events that are going to happen this month, we’re sure that many of you are already all geared up to let loose and party. But before you set out to paint the town red with your dancing shoes firmly on your feet, you need to consider some dangers of having way too much fun. Now, we’re not saying that having fun is bad – we’re just saying that these are known issues that would sometimes crop up when you least expect them.
Drunk Driving It’s best that you don’t, and neither should the person who’s driving you to the event. Plan ahead before you leave home – either employ a designated driver or get a cab to pick you up and send you home. There are easy ways to book a cab now with services such as MyTeksi and truth be told, booking a cab beforehand is the safest option just in case your designated driver decides to have one drink too many. Alternatively, you (and your friends) could also pool some money to book a hotel room for a night near the venue especially if the party is located at a faraway place such as Sepang. Just a small price to pay compared to what your life and others’ lives are worth, if you ask us!
Disappearing Act Festivals are always held at big venues, some enough to hold up to 30,000 people. With a crowd that swells to that size and the phone lines conveniently jammed up in and around the venue, it’s the perfect recipe to lose your friends or worse, get lost yourself. If you need to go to places e.g. to get drinks or food, to meet other friends, to get some fresh air, or to go to the washroom, never go alone. Grab a friend to go with you. Also, inform your group of friends if you’re about to walk away for a bit and decide where you’re going to meet up with them again. Don’t let them spend half the time searching high and low for you in a sea of people or
rather, don’t spend half the time searching high and low for your friends in a sea of people, either.
Drug/Alcohol Overdose Control your alcohol intake. While it’s fun to “chase the high” because you want to get “there” as soon as you walk into the festival grounds, you don’t want to be throwing up your guts towards the tail end of the party. Firstly, it’s not a pretty sight. Secondly, it’s a hassle to be babysitting someone who’s obviously drunk off their faces. Limit yourself at all time. If you need to, alternate between non-alcoholic drinks (such as water) and alcoholic drinks and to sip, not gulp. As for drugs, it’s not something we condone but that’s your prerogative. Please be aware of what you’ll be getting yourself into! If you see or know someone who’s drunk or on the brink of overdose, don’t just stand and watch. Get help! Get them water and immediately alert the first-aid station or the paramedics on site.
Eyes Peeled So you’re already limiting your drinks and you’re partying at a low-risk level hence you think that nothing can go wrong. But have you been keeping an eye on your drinks? Growing up, we’ve always been taught to never take things from strangers no matter how much they try to offer it to us. The same teaching should be applied to your drink. Always buy your own drinks so you know exactly what you’re getting and never accept drinks from people – strangers or friends alike. Most drugs used to spike drinks go untraced because they have no smell or taste and by the time anyone realises that they’ve been spiked, it’s too late. And you don’t want to go down that road. Watch your drinks and if you can, watch your friends’ drinks too. That having said, party on, peeps, but party smart and party safe! For the list of events that are happening all throughout this month, check out our events listing on page 56.

TAKING HIP-HOP FROM THE TOP
DECEMBER 2013
HIP-HOP
“
WHAT BEGAN MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO SOON BECAME A CERTAIN MOVEMENT AND CULTURE AND IT CONTINUES TO EVOLVE TO THE PRESENT DAY
”
T
OPPOSITE PAGE & THIS PAGE | THE HISTORY OF HIP-HOP: KEITH COWBOY FIRST CREATED THE TERM BY SCAT SINGING THE WORDS “HIP HOP HIP HOP” IN A WAY THAT MIMICKED THE US ARMY SOLDIERS MARCHING; DJ KOOL HERC WAS RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE EARLIEST HIP-HOP ARTISTES IN THE WORLD. HE WAS ALSO ONE OF THE FIRST MCs IN THE CULTURE.
he term “hip-hop” is often used to refer to rapping but did you know that it’s an entire subculture? Used synonymously with the term, “rap music”, hip-hop also denotes other elements of the culture including deejaying (believe it or not!), MC-ing, beat-boxing, graffiti, and even dancing. This street culture has existed for centuries in all countries, from as early as the late 60s of the 20th century. What began more than 30 years ago soon became a certain movement and culture and it continues to evolve to the present day. The creation of the term is often credited to Keith Cowboy, rapper with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and the earliest evidence of the culture can be traced back to New York among black and Latino people. In its infancy, hip-hop has been described as an outlet and a “voice” for the alienated youth of the poorest quarters, reflecting the social, economic, and political realities of their lives. From block parties, the art spilled on the streets and then to the masses, which then took the entertainment industry by storm:
and beat juggling) was championed by DJ Kool Herc, who is generally considered the father of hip-hop.
DJ-ing Block parties incorporated DJs who played popular genres of music, especially funk and soul. The style evolved when DJs began isolating the percussive breaks of popular songs. And because these “breaks” were generally shorts, DJs began using two turntables to extend the breaks. The art of being a turntablist (beat mixing and/or matching
Like an epidemic, the culture has become so widespread over the recent decades that it has penetrated into our lives everywhere. Hip-hop has since infiltrated movies, music videos, gyms, clubs, and even fashion and language. After more than 30 years since the outbreak and development of the culture, it hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down and yes, hip-hop is here to stay, yo!
MC-ing All in the same beat, DJ Kool Herc started making interesting “speech feasts” into the microphone while beat mixing and/or matching and beat juggling. The trend of announcing some rhythmic text while concurrently making music was so well received that people soon started to call him the “master of ceremony” a.k.a. “MC”. It’s the very same trend that we now identify as “rap”. Dancing They say it ain’t no party if there ain’t nobody breaking into some moves. Hip-hop dance is divided into two basic types – old school and new style. The old school includes popping, locking (a la Janet Jackson and her dancers), and breakdance. The new style, on the other hand, is the kind of usually choreographed and very commercial hiphop dance seen in rap, R&B, and pop music videos, and it doesn’t look anything that originated from the streets.

TIPS FOR THE PARTY NEWBIES
DECEMBER 2013
The Ultimate
Festival Essentials
Going to a festival for the first time? Then you’ll need to know some of what we’d like to call, the festival essentials. It doesn’t sound like a lot but this is the fine line between having the best party you’ve ever had or the worst weekend ever. Here are the top five items that should be on your festival checklist! TISSUES/WET WIPES
1
While it’s all fun and games, festivals are known to breed the “hot and sweaty” fever. You might want to remember to pack extra tissues or wet wipes. Also, the Portaloos (portable toilets) usually run out of toilet paper within an hour or so. And wet wipes are handy at times when you feel like you’re in a dire need of a shower because you’ve sweated buckets.
MINTS/LOLLIPOPS
3
Attending a festival means pulling long hours. Mints or lollipops are important to keep yourself (or rather, your mouth) occupied if you’re not planning on drinking all night. It also helps rid the “dry mouth syndrome”. Besides, you can’t go wrong with a little bit of sugar to keep your energy levels up. The main plus point is that mints or lollipops will help stave off beer/bad breath. You’ll thank us later for this tip!
MOBILE PHONE
4
Huge festivals venues makes for huge crowds. You can imagine how easy it is to get lost in a sea of people and effectively losing your friends for the rest of the day or night. Your mobile phone will be of great use for finding your friends and also, with the advent of amazing smartphone cameras, it will double as a tool for capturing memories. Leave your mobile phone at home and you’ll be in tears even before you set foot into the venue.
LIP BALM CASH + ID
2
This is a no-brainer. First of all, most festivals don’t accept credit cards and they come equipped with ATMs. So, of course you’d need to bring money and your identification card with you – but it’s not limited to just spending on food and beverages at the venue. Money, especially, should be used as a backup just in case you need to call for a cab. What if your designated driver decides to have one drink too many? Exactly. 54
| CAMPUS PLUS
5
One of the many things that is easily ignored but also highly irritating when you’re trying to have fun is dry and cracked lips, usually the first sign of dehydration. Pack a lip balm stick or stuff one in one of your pockets. The good thing is that they’re really tiny and portable so you won’t even notice that it’s there until you really need it. Last but not least, put on your dancing shoes, wear a smile, bring your best party attitude, and you’re all set! Now go soak in the festival vibe.

HEART-A-TACK GAINED MUCH OF ITS INSPIRATION AND INFLUENCE FROM LOCAL BANDS HERE SUCH AS HUJAN AND BUNKFACE
I
n 2007, six high school students with a shared passion for punk and metal-core music began their humble roots, performing at proms and shows at school. A year later, they started playing gigs in and around Kuala Lumpur before eventually recording their first album ‘Don’t Rush Perfection’. Like the album title suggests, the punk/pop band has weathered six years of trials and tribulations to achieve its standing in the Malaysian metal-core scene today. Along the way, Heart-A-Tack was awarded the Astro Hitz Music Video Grant to produce its first music video titled ‘Hilangkan’ in 2011. It was this year however, that the band made some very big strides in its career. Most notably is in being the opening act for American alternative rock band Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’ concert in Thailand. It also toured with punk rock band Bunkface around the country middle of this year and next year it will open for Mayday Parade, a pop punk band from Florida, USA. 2013 also saw the release of its 2nd EP titled ‘Masih Aktif’ Heart-A-Tack gained much of its inspiration and influence from local bands here such as Hujan and Bunkface. It’s rare yet refreshing to find out that the
more senior Malaysian bands are beginning to have more influence as role models to the newer ones. Heart-A-Tack is not shy of admitting that Malaysia has great talents and potential in the music industry. When asked about the band’s name, Heart-A-Tack frontman Ayeen told Campus Plus it is “to surprise people with what we can do on stage”. “For us, showmanship on stage is important, and expressing ourselves on stage is everything”. Ayeen also expressed his concern about the challenges faced by bands in Malaysia, the most recurring one being a lack of venues to perform. All in all, Heart-A-Tack is an example of a hardworking band making its way to success no matter what the odds are. “There’s no shortcut to success. We plan to take our band as far as we can go” said Ayeen. Check out Heart-A-Tack at: • www.heartatack.net • facebook.com/HeartATackBand • youtube.com/HeartATackBand DEC 2013 | CAMPUS PLUS |

album, Prism. When she announced that she was working on Prism, she said that it reflects changes in both her personal life and her music. That saying is true with anthem-like Roar, where she sings about surviving a trauma – her divorce with Russell Brand, perhaps? Her second favourite song off the album, Unconditionally also became our second favourite as it strips away her quirkiness and focuses on raw talent – the strength of her voice in a ballad. Other songs such as Birthday, Walking on Air, and International Smile lives up perfectly to Katy’s cotton candy reputation. Believe us, you want to own this one!
(and more fans unaccounted for) can’t be wrong! Aura, for example, is a sure sign that a combination of Lady Gaga and young German DJ/ producer Zedd can never go wrong. For the first track off ARTPOP, it may be a little hard to digest but it does grow on you after a while. The Mama Monster then steps into funky R&B and classic disco territory with Do What U Want, featuring R. Kelly. A collaboration with R. Kelly? Yes, believe it. Then there’s Swine, a feisty, up-tempo track that has such high energy that it’s impossible to not love. EDM fans, we believe Swine is made for you.

UNIVERSAL RELIGION 7 ARMIN VAN BUUREN
There are dance music compilations and then there are dance music compilations that were personally handpicked and mixed by trance celestial being, Armin van Buuren. Like most of the tracks off Armada, the ones in Universal Religion 7 features
the official release of the album because of the amount of airplay it got across our radio stations. And don’t even pretend it didn’t get you shamelessly singing, Ladadidadi for weeks. Just like We Can’t Stop, Wrecking Ball is just as infectious despite the less than favourable music video. Also, we’re not sure why good songs like #GETITRIGHT wasn’t released as a single of its own because it’s fun and it’s sexy – much more so than Wrecking Ball. But that’s just our opinion. All in all, there’s nothing Hannah Montana about Bangerz, that’s for sure. In fact, Miley shadows Ke$ha quite well in this album. But hey, she’s 20 and so let her experiment with whatever she wants!
tracks laced with non-digital musical instrument elements e.g. piano, strings, drums. And in the Armin van Buuren style you would expect, the compilation (featuring works from ØrjanNilsen, Andrew Rayel, Dash Berlin, Simon Patterson, Shogun, etc.) takes on a well-orchestrated build-up that allows a listener to go on a journey – at least in Disc 1. Come Disc 2 of “Universal Religion 7”, the tables turn and the tracks get a little darker. You’d imagine it as the night getting later thus the need for more driving tracks. Just remember to stop and breathe despite the speed of the journey. Best Armin van Buuren compilation to date? Hands down.

MECHANICAL BULL KINGS OF LEON
If there’s one thing that we respect Kings of Leon for, it’s their ability to remain down-to-earth and true to themselves even after a handful of
albums and sweeping charts with their 2008 hit, Use Somebody. Yes, you remember that one, don’t you? Their new album, Mechanical Bull opens with guitar-work-laden Wait for Me and Supersoaker, with the latter standing out (or rather, rocking out) more than the former. Beautiful War also managed to prick our ears despite it sounding a little bit more mellow, like a rock n’ roll ballad. Fans and new Kings of Leon listeners are also going to enjoy chilling out to Family Tree – we know we did. Was Mechanical Bull hard to love? Quite the opposite, actually. Easily one of our favourite albums of 2013.
CHAPMAN SQUARE / CHAPTER II LAWSON
Decent pop-rock music has no bound and Lawson is living proof of that. Chapman Square / Chapter II is, as you might’ve already guessed, the
extension of Chapman Square. The album opens with Standing In The Dark, a bittersweet song about the one who got away. You could say that Chapman Square / Chapter II does, indeed, open on a sad note. But wait, not all hope is lost. The album then takes on a complete opposite vibe with Taking Over Me, which is as bubbly and happy as pop-rock music can get. And when you’re done snapping your fingers to the catchy tune, turn your attention to Brokenhearted, a pleasant collaboration between the Lawson boys and B.o.B. There’s also a series of acoustic versions of the originals in Chapman Square / Chapter II which are worth mentioning such as Stolen, When She Was Mine, Standing In The Dark, and Taking Over Me. What can we say? Chapman Square / Chapter II is our new guilty pleasure.

INFINITE
Recently, K-Pop idol boy group INFINITE was in town as part of their “2013 Infinite 1st World Tour ONE GREAT STEP”. While we know that the concert, held in Stadium Negara was amazing, we were also invited to the press conference to meet the boys -- Sunggyu, Dongwoo, Sungyeol, Sungjong, Woohyun, Hoya and L. -- for the first time! The seven dapperlooking boys excitedly greeted members of the media before moving on to a Q&A session.

ess than a year after its Malaysian debut, South Korean band Lunafly made its way back to our shores for yet another exclusive showcase titled, 365 With Lunafly. Organised by M.E. Malaysia, the event, held at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus Malaysia, was also to celebrate Lunafly’s first anniversary. The intimate 365 With Lunafly was split into two sessions – the “Superhero Day” show and the “Fly to Love” night show. A super treat for Lukies (as Lunafly’s fans are called). Across the two showcases, Lunafly boys Sam, Teo, and Yun prepared original songs that were crowd favourites as well as some covers.

AMPUS+: What’s your impression of Malaysia so far? INFINITE: This is our second time that we’re visiting Malaysia. The first time was during the 27th Golden Disk Awards in Kuala Lumpur earlier in 2013. We’re so nervous but also happy to be here for our One Great Step concert. The fans in Malaysia are amazing and we’re happy to be back. C+: Would you say that your hit song, Destiny, met your expectations? And why? I: Firstly, it was more than we expected! We really appreciate our fans’ support despite the differences in our respective culture. The music video for Destiny was shot in Universal Studios in the United States and we were the first South Koreans to have had the permission to do so.
The response to that has been amazing and we thank our fans so much for that. C+: Do you remember what it was like to kick off your One Great Step World Tour concert in Seoul? What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about that concert? I: The One Great Step World Tour concert in Seoul was a defining moment for us because we’ve been waiting for that and that was a dream come true. We’ve worked very hard to make this happen. The kick-off in Seoul was fun and we had such a good time. C+: What is the one thing you would say that’s most impressive about touring all around the world for your One Great Step tour? I: Of course, being able to tour all over the

Lunafly Lukies gushed over Lunafly’s live performances of Seeing You or Missing You, How Nice Would It Be, One More Step, as well as covers such as Pink’s Just Give Me A Reason, Qing Fei De Yi, BSB’s As Long As You Love Me, Ne-Yo’s With You, and Justin Timberlake’s Mirrors, just to say the least. Needless to say, by the time the showcase was over, the fans were dancing and singing along.
Lunafly’s 354 With Lunafly event wrapped up with a birthday cake-cutting ceremony to mark Lunafly’s milestone. But the surprises didn’t end there! Malaysian Lukies also prepared a special fan video for the boys, which was done in collaboration with fellow Lukies from around the world. A meaningful affair and sign of greater times to come for the South Korean band!

world is such great fun but if we were to choose what’s most impressive, we’d pick Bangkok, Thailand because the fans there were the most energetic. And we’ll never forget how the fans prepared for us and our concert. C+: Where did the name One Great Step come from? What does it stand for? I: When Neil Armstrong first landed on the moon, he said, “That’s one small step for man but one giant leap for mankind”. So, we chose the phrase to be applied to our concert’s concept. It’s one giant leap for us as well because it’s one giant international leap for us to hold concerts worldwide! C+: What truly motivates you boys to step up on stage to give a great performance? I: We just enjoy being on stage and the motivation comes from our fans, especially when they respond to and enjoy our performances as well. Our fans are our biggest motivation.
C+: What are the pros and cons of, or rather, the biggest difference between performing with your members (as INFINITE) and taking the stage solo? I: When all of us are on stage as INFINITE and all the members are together, we’re able to shine and show all our different colours. But when we perform solo, it does get kind of lonely. C+: Finally, what are INFINITE’s future plans for 2014 once the One Great Step World Tour has wrapped up? I: In gratitude to our fans all over the world, we would like to thank them for their love and support. We’ll come back with a new song in 2014. Please look forward to that! And we look forward to our fans’ support and love for that. Special thanks to IME Productions for the exclusive media invitations.

K.WILL
Sexy duo HyunA (of K-Pop idol girl group 4Minute) and Hyunseung (of K-Pop idol boy group B2ST) are back to redefine provocation with a new EP, Chemistry. The first track titled, Now (There Is No Tomorrow) is catchy and we imagined that it was made to suit some epic choreography. However, what really got our attention was, Turn Up The Volume! Although the name suggests a fast-paced song, it’s in fact quite the opposite as the melody is accompanied by an acoustic guitarstrumming and some R&B vibe. There’s also that song that features Flowsik (of Aziatix) titled, I Like which we love for its electronic dance music influenced beats. HyunA could’ve done with a little less auto-tune on this one though. But don’t take our word for it – if you love ‘em, pick this one up!
It appears that K.Will is well on his way to becoming South Korea’s next “King of Ballads” and with the release of The 3rd Album, Pt. 1 it’s pretty evident. K.Will continues to put a lot of heart and soul into his work, making his music extremely beautiful. Songs like Please Don’t… and Butterfly will pull at your heartstrings and almost make you feel what he must’ve felt while he was composing them even if it’s fictional. He then brandishes his host of skills and talent with Come to My Crib and Hey You, two songs which touch on a distinct R&B vibe and flirts a little with being slightly hip-hop. One thing’s for certain, K.Will doesn’t compromise his gift as a vocalist across all songs on this album! So, when do we get to listen to The 3rd Album, Pt. 2.?

bustling city in all its colourful quirkiness and eccentricities, Tokyo is still one of the most sought-after destinations in Asia. You may have thought that a big budget would’ve been necessary, but armed with a pocketful of dreams and only RM1200, one can indeed enjoy Cosplay-central without a lifetime’s worth of savings. IS ACCOMMODATION EXPENSIVE? Not if you don’t want it to be. There are many budget inns and accommodations around the city that cost an average of JPY2200 per night (that’s RM88). Pick one that’s walking distance from the subway stations, and you’re set for the entire trip. A day’s transport may cost a rough RM15. Remember to align your flight arrival time so you won’t miss the last train to the city. FREE SIGHTS & SOUNDS! Bask in the buzz of unlimited pedestrians and traffic at Shibuya, the world’s busiest junction. Grab a cuppa from Shibuya’s Starbucks and watch life go by from above. The Imperial Palace is free for all, and you can spend a few hours in the vast gardens on the palace grounds. In autumn, it’s the perfect venue for a picnic lunch amongst the red golden foliage. Japan’s funkiest can be found in the streets of Harajuku and Takeshita. Walk amongst Cosplayers and explore the graffiti-covered streets. Check out the many 390yen shops and 100yen Daiso shops that offer so much for so little yen.

Sukiya are safe and affordable choices. A bowl of noodles may cost about RM12. Opt for convenience stores (7-11, Lawson, and Family Mart) that offer full meals for below RM10. IT CAN BE DONE!
GET DISCOUNTS Tokyo Disneyland is the place where dreams come true, for a hefty price. Opt for the Starlight Pass which saves you RM52 (entry from 3pm onwards), and make sure you catch the 8pm fireworks on weekends. Whilst everyone usually head towards the famous Tokyo Tower, walk to the World Trade Building to see Tokyo’s breathtaking skyline AND the Tokyo Tower in all its splendour. Buy your tickets online and it’ll only cost JPY500 (RM20).
With substantial planning and research, Tokyo is a wonderful city that can be explored with a small budget, without compromising on attractions and fun!

Doctor Sleep AUTHOR: STEPHEN KING
On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless – mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky 12-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”
The Letter Ji AUTHOR: JI HYUN JUNG
All Ji knows is that she will love her life. Period. There are no conditions about it. Joy is the very core of her. This is the journey of how she got here and how she knows that she will stay here. People ask her all the time why and how she is this way. She thinks they think she’s crazy. She thinks she is, too. Yet, people also want to know where she gets it. It is kind of intriguing watching a 21-year-old not drink a sip of alcohol and laugh at things like rain. It looks weird. She gets it. She also grins. Little do they know that Ji used to despise laughter. She thought it was stupid, ugly, loud, unnecessary, and most certainly weak. Ji is not who she was. When this young woman would share her story of love, grace, redemption, and survival, she was also often told to write about it. So she finally did, and she wants you to have this, too.
Wedding Night AUTHOR: SOPHIE KINSELLA
Following the success of her chick lit series, author Sophie Kinsella is back with yet another instalment of crazy. I say crazy because the women in her writings are usually over-thetop. In “Wedding Night” the story revolves around two sisters, Fliss (the elder sister) and Lottie (the younger sister). And just as how age would normally define characters in a story, Fliss, an amazing travel editor, is grown up and realistic about life while Lottie is full of hopes and dreams with a lot of growing up to do. Perhaps the fact that Fliss is a recently divorced mother of one also contributes to how different she is from her younger sister – a bit wiser and also, more bitter.

Then comes this one crazy month where Lottie finds love again after a string of failed relationships and who should it be but her first love. Convinced that this is definitely it, she runs away with him to a place where they first met, Greece, to consummate their relationship. Their family and friends are horrified and Fliss is of course not pleased. And because she knows that Lottie can be impulsive, she takes off to follow them to Greece and concocts an elaborate scheme to sabotage their wedding. Without throwing in too many spoilers, I’d just like to say that “Wedding Night” is not so much about how it ends, but about the journey. Delightful right till the last word.
PREVIEW OF TERRARIA
DECEMBER 2013
games by shah
In With The Old, In With The New WHEN YOU MIX A TIMELESS CLASSIC LIKE SUPER MARIO TOGETHER WITH SOMETHING INNOVATIVE LIKE MINECRAFT, YOU GET TERRARIA
T
he title is derived from the word ‘Terra’ or ‘Terrain’, which means land or the surface area of a planet. In Terraria, you can create your own character and world, much like what you can do in Mojang’s Minecraft. You start off by mining resources to make tools, armour, weapons, a house, furniture, facilities (bathtubs included!), and more. Then, use those tools to hack your way into caves, mines, and to the very core of the world itself! Retro gamers will appreciate the 8-bit graphics and side-scrolling action. If you’re wondering what separates this game from being a Minecraft rip-off, we have the answer. After several hours into the game, we discovered that there are many more types of foes to battle, ranging from runoff-the-mill zombies to floating eyeballs. But don’t worry, there’s a wide variety of weapons and armour at your disposal, if you can find the materials to make them! With the right stuff, you can craft dozens of weapons, from a simple bow and arrow to grenade launchers, and even *SPOILER ALERT* a Breaker Blade, much like the one used by Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII! Monsters in the game are not limited to the standard fare of mobs. Players could get a chance encounter with powerful boss monsters like the dreaded Eye Of Cthulhu or the Eater Of Worlds. We’ll leave out the details so you can experience those epic boss battles for yourself. Terraria developer Re-Logic has brilliantly fused old and new, as well as their own touches, to create a beautiful and satisfying game that will keep you going for hours on end. If you’re not so sure about it, look for a demo online and try it before you buy it. But you can take our word that you won’t be disappointed! CAMPUS PLUS |

10 PANASONIC LUMIX GX7
NOKIA LUMIA 1020 The Lumia series is not exactly a popular choice as far as we know. The masses usually prefer to stick to the safe brands. But give the Lumia 1020 a chance and we will tell you why you should. The camera is a 41 megapixel monster! That’s more pixels than in your average DSLR camera (which is usually around 30 megapixels). Photos taken from this phone can probably be blown up to poster size. If you don’t mind forking out a few extra hundred ringgit for an awesome smartphone camera then the Lumia 1020 is for you. WEBSITE : WWW.NOKIA.COM/GLOBAL/PRODUCTS/ PHONE/LUMIA1020/ RRP : RM2,499
It’s been a few years since Panasonic launched the GX1, a camera that straddled the middle ground between the video targeted GH line and the beginner GF range. Now, to suit all your semi-pro photography needs, there is the Lumix GX7. How could this be an ideal gift for geeks you ask? Well if you’ve seen the fast rising number of photo and video blogs popping up all over the World Wide Web today, you’ll see that they’ll definitely need a quality camera that’s not too much of an inconvenience to carry around. The Lumix GX7 is everything a semi-professional photographer needs from a fullfledged DSLR, packed into a smaller device. WEBSITE : PANASONIC.NET/AVC/LUMIX/ SYSTEMCAMERA/GMS/GX7/ RRP : RM4,620
08 SAMSUNG ATIV TAB 3 This is Samsung’s first tablet that runs on Windows 8 operating system. It’s got a satisfying 10.1 inch display and is powered by an Intel chipset. Why would this be an ideal Christmas gift for geeks? Well for one, it’s on the cheaper end of the tablet market. And another selling point is its weight, coming in at 550g which is much lighter than its chunky sibling, the ATIV Q. We also think you should know that Microsoft Office Home and Student edition is pre-installed on the device. WEBSITE : WWW.SAMSUNG.COM/GLOBAL/ATIV/ATIVTAB3.HTML RRP : RM2,399
There’s always that friend who refuses to use popular consumer products. So when it comes to tablets, why not jump out of the mainstream river and take a dip in the alternative ocean. The
Tesla Roadste JUST THINKING ABOUT THE PRESERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT IS A CONTRADICTION WHEN DRIVING A SUPERCAR. HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY SAVE PETROL WHEN A CAR EXCEEDS 100MPH? BUT THE TESLA ROADSTER DOES EXACTLY THAT.

TESLA ROADSTER
er A
side from the positive environmental impact, there are many advantages to driving a Tesla, including the savings on petrol reduction, and a less expensive price tag, compared to other high-performance cars. True, the car’s top speed is a mere 125mph, but who is supposed to drive faster than that anyway? What is impressive, though, is the acceleration of an electric car going from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. And, then there is the transmission, a simple, single-speed fixed gear. I know you are asking yourself, “who drives a car like that and calls it a supercar?” You’d be shocked, however, by the numbers of people ordering the Tesla Roadster. So many, in fact, that the price has been reduced considerably since the first sale. With an initial price point of roughly US$180,000 (RM566,730), it now sells for about US$109,000 (RM343,186.50). But, that was the goal of the company from the beginning. Their intent was not to sell a few exclusive cars for a high price, but rather, to sell lots of cars for a cheaper price. In other words, they are interested in mass appeal, instead of elite ownership.
The Tesla Roadster gets 394km per charge on the “custom microprocessor-controlled lithium-ion battery”. Using a 240-volt connection, the car can be fully charged in four hours, but on a regular 120v, it will take as long as forty hours. But think of the petrol you save, and there are no harmful emissions, so if you decide to buy the convertible model, the Roadster Sport, you don’t have to worry about exhaust blowing in your face. Like the Bugatti Veyron, the Roadster Sport has three different driving modes called Standard, Range and Performance. Using the special key in Performance mode, the car easily rockets forward from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. The Sport is obviously much more expensive than other Tesla models, but those who have test driven this car feel that it’s worthy of long-time icons such as Ferrari and Porsche. For someone who wants to contribute to saving the earth, and who relishes the thought of no more petrol fillups, but wants the luxury and performance of an expensive supercar, look no further than the Tesla Roadster. POOL PARTY
DECEMBER 2013
L O O P PA F
There’s a hidden oasis in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and all you have to do is brave the busy, often congested, Jalan Ampang to get to it. But once you step in The Pool, the hustle and bustle of the city quickly dissipates and you’ll be greeted with an open air ambience. Its main attraction is undoubtedly the swimming pool which acts as a centrepiece for the club. Across the water runs a walkway which the club often uses for fashion shows and product launches. 76

All this talk about swimming pools and water must make you think of a refreshing drink or two. Well, cocktails are The Pool’s bread and butter. There’s a wide range of beverages to choose from and some of Campus Plus favourites are the Nutella Martini, Malacca Loda, and Skittles Bomb. It might seem like more of a watering hole but if you’re hungry, The Pool provides! Try out their calamari coated with salted egg, gnocchi with chicken sausage in cream sauce, smoked duck wrap with nachos, or Asahi beer battered fish and chips.

Some of the dishes may sound familiar, especially if you’ve paid a visit to The Hill. This is because The Pool is its sister bar. The outdoor sitting area surrounds the swimming pool. Low comfy chairs with low tables make the place and ideal chill out spot for those who just want drinks and conversation with friends. If you’re looking for a wild night of dancing though, step inside the indoor section and bust a move on the dance floor! The Pool plays a wide range of hip-hop, R&B, and electronic dance music (EDM), depending on which
night you go. Sundays give guests the chance to arrive in their beach attire and hop into the pool. So remember, when visiting The Pool, be sure to bring an extra set of clothes just in case you get wet. We’re talking about the swimming pool of course.
