Bags Gold Medal in Battle of Chef

Providing More Opportunities On 16 December 2014, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and Professor Nick Rawlins, Pro Vice Chancellor of Development & External Affairs, University of Oxford, signed a statement of intent between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the University of Oxford. This statement of intent was to declare academic and cultural collaborations between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the University of Oxford. Among its first projects is the 4th Southeast Asian Studies Symposium which is going to be held in March 2015, outside the University of Oxford for the first time. The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation has already established links with prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Cambridge. The partnership between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the University of Oxford illustrates their commitment to continually support academic study of the region, and dedication to develop a long, productive collaboration between the respective organisations.

A KDU College Penang student won himself a gold medal during the 15th Battle of the Chefs (BOTC) competition last year in October. Ang Cheh Hua, a second year Diploma student in Professional Chef Training won a gold medal under the pasta category for his dish, Trio Pasta, bronze medals for his dishes in Asian Team Restaurant and lamb category, as well as a diploma for fish. Ang admitted that he was not very confident of winning anything, as it was his first time in BOTC. However, he admitted to planning and training three weeks before the competition kicked off, which gave him ample time to improve his dishes. He was thankful for his lecturers’ guidance, advice, as well as for spending extra hours after class to discuss and improve his creations.35 KDU Penang students competed against more than 1,000 professional chefs from across the globe in the 4-day cooking competition. In total, KDU Penang won 58 prizes under 14 different categories. Proud lecturerin-charge, Chef Muhamad Faizal, was thrilled with his students’ achievement of one gold, two silvers, 30 bronzes, and 25 diplomas. Faizal added that the competition was useful for the students’ future, as hands-on experiences and relevant exposure are essential in the culinary industry.

Journey Towards an Accelerated Growth Central to the conference was the theme “The Journey of Hercules”, where participants underwent a series of intriguing and yet provocative activities such as The Ancient Ball challenge, Tribal Wars, Minds of the Gods and Balance of Hercules. Needless to say, the activities were devised to challenge the physical and mental capabilities of the participants. In addition, participants were also given the chance to extend their professional network.

UKM Students Win Bosch’s 2014
Innovation Around My Campus Two Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) students won Bosch’s 2014 ‘Innovation around My Campus’ competition, for their idea to increase campus bus service efficiency through a smartphone application late in November, last year. UKM’s Ngan Eng Heng and Lim Tsiu Fang paired up as Team H&F to create the BOS (Bus on Spot) application, which will likely be able to maximise the efficiency of their campus buses using a very simple system. Emphasising on punctuality, team leader Ngan Eng Heng said that his team envisioned tackling UKM’s unpredictable bus service “By creating a free application that can be downloaded to track buses within UKM. Users of the BOS App can then plan their travelling time more effectively, while increasing the efficiency of our bus service.” He continued, “We are glad that our idea has won us the grand prize and we hope to realise our innovative application for the benefit of all within our campus.” Launched in September last year, the finals came down to a narrow fight between six finalists from UKM, UiTM, KDU University College, HELP Centre of Arts and Technology (HELP CAT), Universiti Malaya (UM) and Taylor’s University. Bosch’s ‘Innovative around My Campus’ challenge contested students’ creativity, by requiring them to develop an innovation based on or integrating Bosch products, that would be useful for their campuses.

IACT College students launched Meals for All, an initiative that converts public donations into food provisioning for the homeless and urban poor around the Klang Valley during the middle of November, last month. To help in the event, students from IACT College’s Diploma in Mass Comm. founded Espero PR. Under this banner, the students helped to co-organise Meals for All alongside founder/Malaysian restaurateur Ramesh Vadiveloo. The goal of the Meals for All campaign is to help raise awareness for the Malaysian underprivileged, especially among university students. Lecturer-in-charge, Suhana Abdul Khadir, said that she was highly proud of her students and that they were highly involved in the project. “I am proud to say that they have shown changes I would want to see, as they begin to appreciate their providers, the parents, and the people around them.” Hoping that her students would carry the values obtained from Meals for All for their future endearment, Suhana added, “Enough of taking, start giving.” Inspired by the concept of ‘suspended coffee’ in Italy, Ramesh Vadiveloo took Meals for All to provide wholesome meals to the homeless and urban poor in the Klang Valley. He established the initiative in July 2014, and operated solely on public funds to prepare meals using local ingredients purchased from small entrepreneurs. Meals for All would then distribute the food via collaborating restaurants and soup kitchen partners, including Frontera Sol de Mexico Restaurant, White Jacket Caterers, Kechara Soup Kitchen, and Dapur Jalanan. University of Nottingham Malaysia First to be Accreditated By British Psychological Society The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) became the first of psychology course provider outside the UK to receive an accreditation from the British Psychological Society (BPS) for its undergraduate programme late in November last year. The accreditation, presented during their panel visit to UNMC, highlighted UNMC’s vast research resources for students and its closelyknit learning community, as well as its level of public engagement in raising the profile of psychology in Malaysia and the surrounding regions. Furthermore, UNMC’s BSc in Psychology and BSc Psychology & Cognitive Neurosciences graduates would be eligible for BPS’ Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership. UNMC’s School of Pscyhology Head Dr. Elizabeth Sheppard said, “We greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to talk in depth with the panel about our psychology programmes and the infrastructure which supports them,” Dr. Sheppard added, “Our students are very excited about the prospect of graduating with a BPS-accredited degree.” The British Psychological Society is a professional organisation for psychologists in the United Kingdom. It has been involved in accrediting education programmes and psychology training since the 1970s. Earlier this year, the association started offering accreditation opportunities for transnational programmes.

Curtin Sarawak Lends
a Helping Hand
Seven local charities received a total of RM9,800 in donations from Curtin University, Sarawak on 9th December, 2014. The funds collected were proceeds from the sale of Curtin Sarawak Open Day’s lucky draw tickets as well as the donations from other participants and the university. The charities that received the proceeds were the Mental Health Association of Sarawak; the National Autism Society of Malaysia; the Palliative Care Association of Miri; the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society; the Human Life Service; the Piasau Animal Welfare Society; and the Sarawak Family Planning Association. Moreover, they were non-governmental organisations that participated in Curtin Sarawak’s eighth Open Day on 20th September 2014. Curtin Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said the involvement of charities are significant to the annual event. Apart from that, they are committed to support the local charities as much as they can. According to Curtin Sarawak’s Open Day Committee Chairman and Corporate Communications Manager Nicholas Leong, this year’s event attracted 9,005 visitors, which is marked as a new record. Curtin Sarawak Open Day continues to be a huge success each year due to the strong support of the local community. Therefore, new attractions will be introduced at next year’s event to make it more exciting. “It is more about connecting with the community and promoting educational opportunities for young people, and in this regard, we are glad the community sees the value in the event,” Leong said. Two APU Student Teams Score
At UTP-HAX National Hacking Competition 2014
Two talented Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation’s student teams have successfully “hacked” their way to the top by securing the 1st Runner-Up and the 4th place at the UTP-HAX National Hacking Competition 2014. A total of 37 teams from public and private universities participated in the competition that was held on the 14th and 15th November 2014 at Universiti Teknologi Petronas. In the competition, participants were required to scan, test, hack, defend and use creative and constructive ways to secure a system. Team Yolo from APU attained the 1st Runner-Up, while Team EZ attained the 4th Place. Both teams received cash prizes of RM3,000 and RM1,000 respectively. To earn the achievements, both teams had to display high levels of cooperation, creativity and innovation. APU’s lecturer and mentor for Team Yolo, Khoo Li Jing, said that the students’ performance, who have undergone a one-month intensive training with the mentors and the seniors, was very impressive. Khoo also said that “It doesn’t matter which level you are at, how old you are, or where you come from. You stand a chance to win, as long as you have the spirit of winning.”
INTI Hosts ASEAN Technopreneurs’ Dialogue
on Environmental Sustainability Last year in November, the seven winners of the MCCC-AAET Green Award 2014 came together to share their ideas and comprehension on sustainable socio-economic development with INTI students and faculty members. The Green Award is a ceremony that’s jointly organised by the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) and the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET). In its fourth year, the MCCC-AAET Green Award encourages the growth of green concepts in the ASEAN region. It is also a platform that recognises outstanding young technopreneurs in ASEAN countries who contribute practical resolutions for environmental concerns. By hosting the MCCC-AAET Green Awards, INTI is hoping to instil a sense of social responsibility in its students, instead of focusing only on academic success. INTI believes that through an approach that includes a mixture of international exposure, advanced learning and individual development, students are able to develop in-demand contemporary skills that comprise of critical thinking, cooperation, communication and creativity.

Acer Unveils New Line of Smartphones Acer officially launched a brand-new line of smartphones on 18 November 2013. Among the new smartphones that were launched include the Acer Liquid X1, Liquid Jade and the Liquid Z500. Each of these models offers something a little different to suit your needs. With this new line of smartphones, Acer is now offering relatively powerful smartphones at highly competitive prices. Leading the lot is the Acer Liquid X1, which features a 1.7GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, along with a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP wide-angle front camera. The Acer Liquid Jade on the other hand offers a quad-core 1.3GHz processor with 1GB of RAM. The Liquid Jade also has a 13MP and 2MP front camera. Last but not least, the Acer Liquid Z500 features a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, and 2GB of RAM. It also includes an 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. Officially Launched in Malaysia
Snap, list and sell - this is what Carousell is all about. As one of Southeast Asia’s largest and fastest growing mobile-first, person-to-person marketplaces, it’s pretty exciting to see what Carousell is all about. They are excited to launch Carousell in Malaysia and are looking forward to welcome more Malaysian Carousell users. Carousell first launched in 2012 and has maintained its rank as the No. 1 Lifestyle app on the App Store for 11 months straight and the No. 1 Shopping app since June 2014 in Singapore. Over eight million listings of items for sale have been created on Carousell, together with millions of items successfully transacted. LINE Pop-up Store Opens at IOI City Mall LINE Corporation has a rather unique concept for its stores, whereby the company sets up temporary stores at malls to sell LINE merchandise. These stores, known as LINE Pop-up Stores have been popping up around the world and just recently, the world’s largest LINE Pop-up Store was opened at IOI City Mall, Putrajaya. The event was held from 27 November, 2014 till 2 January, 2015, giving fans just over a month to purchase official LINE merchandise. In addition, there were a number of limited-edition LINE merchandise that could also be found there. LINE Malaysia’s Public Relations Manager, Patricia Yeoh said, “We were blown away by the incredible support shown at last year’s LINE Friends Pop-up Store that took place in Pavilion KL and it was with the feedback from our fans that we wanted to make this year’s Pop-up Store bigger and better.” To celebrate the opening of this Pop-up Store, LINE gave out 10% discount vouchers via the LINE Event Official Account. #IMAGINE(s) A Better World For Children
UNICEF
As part of the celebration surrounding the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF has launched its latest campaign called #IMAGINE. United through music, dozens of celebrities, including Katy Perry, David Guetta, Courteney Cox, and other aspiring pop stars came together to record a compilation video that recreates John Lennon’s classic “Imagine”. The collective experience is aimed to draw attention to the challenges that children around the world are facing by raising funds for children from more than 150 countries. The campaign also highlights an interactive experience that allows everyone across borders to record and share their respective version of John Lennon’s iconic anthem on social media. The project will be accomplished on New Year’s Eve with renowned music producer, David Guetta mixing all the fan videos into one singular version. Everyone who participates in #IMAGINE has the chance to be featured in the new version of “Imagine”. UNICEF hopes the programme will create what is essentially the world’s largest sing-along. Look Like Kim Kardashian
The Kardashian frenzy continues to sweep more people up, with one man going as far as to spend US$150,000 (RM520,000) to look like Kim Kardashian. Kim, who is arguably the most famous and controversial member of the reality TV clan, has clearly inspired a whole new level of adoration in British makeup artist Jordan James Parke. After seeing her in a few episodes of ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’, 23 year-old Parke decided she is the perfect woman and started on his cosmetic surgery-lined path to transform into her. To date, he has undergone more than 50 procedures, which include Botox, lip and cheek fillers, eyebrow tattoos and laser hair removal. The transformed man said “I love everything about Kim. She’s the most gorgeous woman, ever. Her skin is perfect, her hair, everything about her.” To those who hate on his new look, he simply laughs it off, stating “Do they think I was going for the natural look? If I was, I’d ask for my money back.” Parke’s revamp is not unprecedented. Last year in July, it was reported that fellow Brit, Claire Leeson, had spent US$30,000 (RM100,000) to emulate her favourite reality starlet. She had said her plastic surgery was an attempt at gaining self confidence after being bullied as a teen.
Seth Rogen and James Franco’s ‘The Interview’ Cancelled Following Threats The string of shocking revelations that surfaced following the hacking of Sony Pictures has now led to the cancellation of ‘The Interview’, a satirical movie about North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un. After hackers released a note online that claimed they would show footage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at every screening of ‘The Interview’, five major theatre chains have pulled the movie from their lineup. The move came despite assurance from the Department of Homeland Security that “there is no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theatres within the United States”. The Seth Rogen and James Franco movie involves a plot to assassinate the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Many celebrities have since expressed disappointment, with director Judd Apatow calling it ‘disgraceful’ and Ben Stiller blasting it as “a threat to the freedom of expression”. Before the cancellation, Franco and Rogen had already made many media appearances to promote the movie. Rogen had staunchly stood by ‘The Interview’, telling ABC that: “I like the movie...We set out to make a movie that was really entertaining to audiences. I genuinely think we did that. And that’s where my job ends.” 22

Thierry Henry Retires It’s time for him to hang up those football boots. After 20 years of playing, former France and Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is retiring. Known as Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer, Thierry Henry also represented France in three World Cup outings. Following his exit from the New York Red Bulls, it was speculated he would join another club. Instead, the 37 year-old is now joining Sky Sports after his stint as a World Cup commentator for the BBC. His impressive career highs include 175 Premier League Goals, two Premier League titles and three FA Cups, all of which were from his time as an Arsenal player. With Barcelona, he also lifted a Champions League trophy. Even more amazingly, he is the fourth highest goal scoring footballer in the world. Aside from that, Henry also played Monaco and Juventus. In his official statement announcing his exit, the Frenchman also had this to say:”I would like to thank all the fans, team-mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and, of course, the French national team that have made my time in the game so special. I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience. I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part. See you on the other side.”

U.S bids for 2024 Olympics Despite not having decided on a specific city, the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) has entered its bid to be in the running to host the 2024 Olympics. That said, it is highly likely that one from Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C. will be chosen as the final candidate. According to the USOC, it is currently a four-way tie, but it is hoped that a board meeting in early January will change all that. The USOC waits eight years between each Olympic bid, and out of the four aforementioned cities, only one has hosted the Olympics-Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984. The last time the Summer Olympics was hosted in the States, it was Atlanta in 1996, and the most recent U.S. hosting of the Winter Olympics was Salt Lake City in 2002. Countries may start entering bids for the largest sporting event in the world starting January 15, and have to declare a bid by September 15.

In conjunction with the annual Pesta Konvokesyen, our team once again hopped on a journey across eight different public universities (UTHM; UIAM; UKM; UPM; UUM; USM; USIM; and UiTM) around the country. The carnivals that took place from October 2014 to December 2014, were organised to create a jovial atmosphere among graduates. For those who had missed out the previous festival, here’s a recap about what the events were all about! In light of the graduation of its students, the universities mentioned above individually organised their ‘Pesta Konvo’. Held annually, these events are a platform for students to not only celebrate their graduation, but to mingle and of course, do some networking.

To ensure the events were exciting, various booths and activities were a common sight at these locations. They served as ice breakers and also to make things more fun. The festival literally had it all - food, music, celebrity performances, games, fashion, entertainment and arts. You name it, they had it! One of the most exhilarating highlights from the festivals were none other than the contests! There were hundreds of different contests, each with plenty of great prizes to be won. Among these contests was the search for the best hair makeover personality. Elite, a participating merchandiser generously offered a hair makeover for those who desired a quick new look. Photos of the participants were then put up on a wall and those with the highest number of votes won themselves RM1,500 in cash.

On 20 December 2014, we held a Corporate Social Responsibility program with the help from multiple sponsors. The project involved us heading over to Pertubuhan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Klang Utama to pass the children there some much needed supplies. The shelter recently recovered from a fire that destroyed their previous home. Now re-located to a rented house, they are hoping to rebuild. To aid in this effort, we managed to find some sponsors to provide donations in the form of food, drinks, backpacks, and other necessities.

To lighten the mood, a group of carollers from the Church of Our Lady of Fatima joined the children to sing a number of Christmas songs. In addition, a clown was also present to entertain the children by creating various things like swords, butterflies and dogs, using balloons. Once the activities were over, the children were treated to a scrumptious meal, before each of them were given goodie bags that contained plenty of useful items. We hope that our social responsibility initiative will inspire students like you to volunteer at shelters like these, because in the words of Anne Frank, â&#x20AC;&#x153;No one has ever become poor by giving.â&#x20AC;? We wish the children of the shelter good luck, and strength in all their future endeavours.

n a world inundated by options, it gets harder to make the right decision for you. At the end, it’s a classic case of “May the best man win”, or in our case, the best brand. In Campus Plus’ annual Brand Choice Awards, we ran a survey and over 4,000 students decided the brands that were at the top of their heads. This is the only award that is voted solely by university students in Malaysia, a.k.a. the pillars of the future, or if you may, the Tetris blocks of the country. This is where the biggest brands, products and services get to duke it out in a ring where they are pitted against each other, by you. Or more specifically, 4,479 of you. That’s right. This year’s results reached a record high as we handed out surveys to that many students from various universities and colleges across Malaysia, and gave you a chance to make your voice heard. Aside from letting students give their two cents on what’s relevant in their world right now, what else does the Brand Choice Awards do? With the revelation of the winners, you also get to make more informed choices the next time you decide to purchase a new smartphone, or you could brag about which brand is at the top during your next yumcha session with your friends. After all, money’s a precious commodity, especially when you’re an undergraduate, and parting with it is not something that should be done for just anything. As usual, we did our best to cover as many bases as possible. In terms of food, we’ve got categories ranging from the usual (favourite place for a cuppa joe, fast food outlet, etc) to the crazily specific (tea drink, chewing gum, etc). Did McDonalds’ French Fries win over your hearts again? Has Mamee’s much-hyped about Curry Laksa flavour dethroned Maggi? These are just some of the questions that the Brand Choice Awards 2014 answered. We also had categories for entertainment and amenities, so you can find out which is really the most popular cinema or karaoke franchise among your peers. This year, the Brand Choice Awards was successfully held in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, KL. At the event, representatives from the various brands were present to accept the awards. Moisturise Your Skin
From The Inside Out!
K
eeping your skin moisturised is not an easy task. You may think that the humidity in Malaysia would help in this matter, but this doesn’t seem to be the case. The average Malaysian usually invests in eight different types of moisturisers and dedicates hours on maintaining his/her skin. However, dry and flaky skin somehow still creeps back into the picture. The first step to combat dry skin is to use the right body wash and moisturise regularly. That, sadly, does not do even half of the job. What’s the rest of the process you ask? Well, you need to start from the inside – eat the right food and your skin WILL become healthier. As the saying goes, “you are what you eat”. First of all, you have to recognise your skin type – Normal Skin, Oily Skin, Dry Skin, Sensitive Skin, and a combination of Oily and Dry. Regardless of what your skin type is though, you’ll want to start with The Fabulous Five below: 1. Don’t wait. Start as early as possible. 2. Choose soft body wash and avoid soap because it is harsher. 3. Limit shower time. Don’t wash up too much of your skin’s natural oil. 4. The nice twice. Twice a day for moisturising is better than more. 5. Get the sunscreen + moisturiser combination to enjoy both benefits!

Let’s Eat Healthy! Drink two litres of water per day. Your skin is made up of three layers – the outer layer (epidermis), the underlying skin (dermis), and then the subcutaneous fat tissues. The epidermis is the one that needs the most hydration, as it is the outermost and most exposed to harmful UV rays among the three. One of the best ways to ensure that your epidermis stays healthy is to drink plenty of water. Start drinking water within the first 15 minutes upon waking up for best results. The recommended amount of water you should drink is two litres.
Make vitamins and food supplements your BFFs. Sometimes, food alone is not enough for your skin to completely rehydrate itself. This is where you turn to food supplements. Our first pick would be anything with the magical Omega 3 Oil. This oil not only helps to combat dry skin, it helps to prevent the development of cancerous skin cells, strengthen the skin and even reduce inflammation. Apart from that, you could also consider Vitamin C, which helps to ensure smoother and more supple skin. Take these supplements in the morning for best effect. In the evening however, you’ll want to take Vitamin E, A.K.A. The Ultimate Skin Protector, before bedtime. Why bedtime? Your body repairs your skin while you’re asleep and Vitamin E helps to lock in moisture. This way, your skin remains well hydrated, even while repairing itself.
Limit them junk food! Junk food is awful! It is the major cause of weight gain and pimple growth because of the refined sugar content. It also dehydrates your skin incredibly, which results in much drier and duller-looking skin. We are not saying you should completely cut it off your diet (it would be best if you could). All we’re saying is that moderation is key. Limiting the consumption of junk food to once a month and replacing it with healthier options will do wonders for your skin.
Load up on protein! Protein is best known as an agent that promotes cell regeneration. How do you get protein though? Simple – eggs and fish are great examples of protein! Eggs alone is a good source of protein. They contain enough sulphur and lutein to help promote good skin hydration and elasticity. As for fish, Salmon, Trout, and Sardine are not only sources of protein, but have Omega 3 oil as well!
Let’s start now! Go for whole vegetables and fruits. Vegetable peels contain silica, the key element for healthier bones and teeth but more importantly, rehydrating and maintaining elasticity of your skin. However, you don’t really get silica often because you tend to discard the skin of your vegetables and eat only the flesh. Next time, keep your Japanese cucumbers and apple peels, or even celery string for supple skin!
Consuming the right food does not only make you healthier, it helps your skin rehydration process as well. Above all, you won’t have to spend on eight different types of moisturisers (sunscreen, on the other hand, is worth your money, really!) because this diet will get you happier skin, by just eating. To Clean, Or Not to Clean?

een to the beauty store lately to look for another facial cleanser? Once again, you are stuck at the store for few hours because there are just too many choices. You can’t help but begin to ask yourself “Have any facial cleansers ever worked for me?” You understand that facial cleansers are essential for healthy skin, but the question now is, how do you choose the right cleanser that’s right for you? Firstly, it is important to know your skin type. After that, take into account the factors that triggered your skin problems, including your age and the climate. Moreover, keep in mind that the facial cleanser that works for you today may not work as well after repeated use. It is because your skin changes according to the seasons, age, diet and other factors. It is not an easy job to get yourself a perfect facial cleanser, but once you master the way of choosing the right one, your skin will always remain at its best.
Which skin type do you have? Sensitive Skin Do you often feel that your skin is tight, itchy and dry? Perhaps it also gets inflamed and irritated easily? You may also experience allergic reactions when your skin comes into contact with certain chemicals found in soap. If this is what you are experiencing now, then this would be your skin type and it requires special type of care as it is the most fragile skin type.
Dry Skin Wipe your face with an oil-absorbing blotting paper now. If your skin is dry, the paper will be clean without the trace of oil. Your skin will also feel flaky, dry and tight.
Normal Skin Your skin is almost perfect. You don’t have much skin problems. Your skin is always clean, smooth, soft, elastic and vibrant. It’s healthy and there’s a healthy amount of circulation.
Oily Skin People with this skin type will often need to keep a pack of oil-absorbing blotting paper in their pockets or bags. Having oily skin is highly uncomfortable as it will often leave you feeling sticky.
Combination Skin This is a combination of both dry and oily skin. Typically, oil is produced around the ‘T-zone’, which are on the nose and forehead, but not on other areas. 38

After identifying your skin type, here is what you need to know to pick a good cleanser for your skin.

Check the cleanser properly to see if it is suitable for your skin type.
Step 2
Check the product ingredients carefully. Avoid products that contain alcohol.
Step 3
Research is important. Although skincare products are very personal and sometimes, subjective, it is always good to read a review about that product. This will give you a better idea about the product. It’s also wise to get a sample of the product before committing to a purchase.
Step 4
Use it to feel it! Do focus on how the facial cleanser makes your skin feel, not its price. If it makes you feel great, you are good to go.
Step 5
Wipe your face with a cotton pad and toner after using the facial cleanser. If the cotton pad has lots of makeup residue or looks yellow, it means the cleanser is not strong enough. In other words, you need to look for another facial cleanser.

Deal r N As we travel through this journey of life, growing up, going places and meeting individuals, we realise that things aren’t all as they seem to be; all that glitters may not just be gold and there are shades of grey for many out there – in this month’s cover story, we take you into the life of a shady character; to tell (some of) you, a story you’ve probably never heard before.
J
oe came to class on Monday morning as usual. But unusually, his eyes were bloodshot and a smile was plastered on his face. He had broken the first rule of dealing drugs, which he either read or saw in a film somewhere – he can’t recall. The rule states that you should never ever ‘pinch’ from your own stash. That was the first time though, that he had smoked weed. Joe studies at a rather prestigious private college here in Malaysia, and has all the right connections, via his course mates and his wide circle of friends. His friends are mostly well-to-do, some even with their own drivers who chauffeur them from one place to the other. He, on the other hand, had difficulties paying his tuition fees, to the point the administration forced an ultimatum upon him - to pay up or quit. Despite having insufficient funds, he had always been a people person, which made it easy for him to mingle. Because of his

nature, Joe loved to be constantly amongst friends. It is thanks to this longing, that he is now a dealer.
Broke? Sell a Toke. At first, Joe found it difficult to keep up with the lifestyles of most of his coursemates. While he would prefer to frequent the mamak, they would chill out at places like ‘Ben’s’, ‘Starbucks’, or ‘Friday’s’ and following them around hurt more than just his wallet, it also made him feel poor. His friends were nice though, offering to buy him food and drinks, but he never felt easy, and one can only take so much before having to return the favour. That’s when he met Steve, a cool guy, but slightly notorious as well; known in some circles as a stoner, pot smoker, ganja guy, which ever name you prefer. Joe and Steve got close. Once
Deal(er) the money, which was indeed lucrative. There was also not much effort required, making dealing the easiest job he had ever done, and rationalised why people would ever turn to pushing drugs. He made a hard rule for himself though – not to try it himself. It was just a job to him, he was just going to be the middleman.
Hazed and Dazed Days went by, then months, and before he knew close enough, Steve eventually let him in on his not-so-secret underground business. The money was good, and all that Joe would have to do was to pass packages to other students. Not the huge packages you see on television where people get caught in airports for, but relatively small ones. Like certain diseases, these packages were small enough to be passed through a handshake. Never in a million years would Joe have thought he would be one to deal drugs, but it was too late to turn back now. He started with only a few contacts, thanks to a referral by Steve. Steve handed Joe pre-packed ‘stuff’ and all Joe had to do was to arrange a meeting with
the buyers. He did so in between classes and on other times when he was free. The weed was sold in denominations of RM50. For each RM50 that Joe distributed, he would make RM15. It may seem like a small figure, but the numbers piled up, as the demand was high (and so were the people who were demanding it.) It was astounding at first, for Joe to meet the different types of people who smoked. The most innocent of faces, those who don’t even smoke plain cigarettes, medical students, arts students; apparently there was a whole other world hiding behind the haze. At first, Joe figured he would do this just for
it, Joe was joining his friends more regularly at ‘Starbucks’, and ‘Chili’s’, even buying them drinks from time to time. Some of his friends wondered where this new found wealth had come from. Others knew, but this was a closely guarded secret. They didn’t really mind though, because who really questions free food and drinks? Joe became increasingly famous among those who smoke and his friendly, easy-to-getalong-with attitude only helped him make more friends. Having more friends meant higher demand for Steve. Steve’s clientèle seemed to be growing, all thanks to Joe. Joe too, was beginning to make copious amounts of money. He was so well-known that JAN 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS |

he began receiving phone calls at strange hours of the day from smokers who wanted to get their fix. Steve then proposed that Joe should branch out and make more money for himself – to get his own list of “clients”. One of the more interesting clients Joe met was an established man who claimed to be a doctor. He drove a BMW and was referred to Joe via Joe’s college mates. Needless to say, Joe’s business grew and even prospered. He would now buy large amounts of weed from Steve, worth close to RM1,000. He would then bring it back home and cut it up and pack it himself. This way, he could make nearly double the amount he invested. For this however, he also needed to invest in equipment and bought a scale to do his measurements, and proper cutting material. He would then lock himself up in his room, coming out only when his phone rang or to eat. His parents, who were busy themselves, thought he was just being a hardworking student. In a sense he was, just not the way they figured. Till today, they are most likely oblivious to all that transpired. 42

RM50 would get you around 10-12 grams of weed, if your dealer is generous, but it sometimes varies between 7-12 grams. A number of factors come into play for this variation. The difficulty of attaining the supply, the quality or type, the mood and your relationship with the dealer. Slowly though, as Joe sold, he became intrigued with the substance itself. His mixing with drug users made him wonder about it. So one morning, while meeting a regular customer, Joe and his new friend had a joint before class, at the car park. It was still very early and the car park was empty, plus it only looked like two guys sharing a cigarette. Joe never knew the effects of what he sold to others till that morning. In class, his usually boring lecturer seemed to come across as very interesting and animated. Joe was paying full attention, and after laughing at odd moments, everything seemed funny at that moment. He was really feeling the high, and finally understood why a lot of people actually smoked weed. After classes that day, he rushed home to satiate his desire.
This was a major turning point for Joe. He had now become a user and a distributor. He used to think that smoking was a bad thing, and drugs as something disgusting, but the times had changed and he had “seen the light”. He still wanted to know what lay on the other side of the fence though, so he began experimenting with stronger drugs. The next thing Joe tried was Ecstasy, or E, or MDMA. As usual, there are plenty of codenames for the pill. Apparently, the pill makes you feel more energetic and goes well with loud energetic music. This perhaps explains why it is known as a party pill. It’s dangerous though and those who take it are advised to never take the whole pill at once, to avoid dehydration and even death! Having tried Ecstasy, he decided that he would begin to sell that too. He began minting money and his circle of friends grew. He began getting to know more people, not just students from his own college, but others as well, both near and far. Students would drive as far as other states to meet him to get their select fixes. Joe was now a dealer for Metamphetamine and Ketamine. Meth was perhaps the most dangerous drug he had dealt. Also known as Syabu, it was the cause of the deaths during the 2014 Future Music Festival here in Malaysia. Ketamine on the other hand, or K, is essentially horse tranquilliser. Imagine the effects K would have on a human!

Life seemed to be escalating for Joe, and he was enjoying riding high. He started missing classes, but it didn’t really matter. The point of having an education after all, was to make money and Joe was already making money!

2013 One night however, Joe was to meet one of his regular buyers at a park nearby his home. He had rolled a joint to smoke with his client cum friend. Little did they know however, that at the place of exchange, there were cops lurking, watching them. As soon as Joe lit the joint, a couple of motorbikes appeared and surrounded them. Joe flicked his joint away as far as possible, but the odour of weed was unmistakable and the cops knew what they were up to. They searched the both of them and found the bag containing the RM50 worth of weed, before hauling both of them to the police station for questioning. At the police station, Joe was separated from his friend. Later, he would find out that his ‘friend’ had ratted him out and left him to suffer the consequences all by himself. There, in the interrogation room, Joe was shivering and shaking while speaking to the stern cop. He could be facing the death sentence, for carrying that much of weed on him. As previously mentioned though, Joe had good people skills and this allowed him to weasel his way out of this predicament. Ever since his harrowing experience in the interrogation room and (very) short time spent inside a cell, Joe has stopped selling drugs in mass – he knows that one day his luck will run out, and he may just be in a cell for good.

A
re we prepared to see what is really going on with our world? Pedram Shojai (doctor, physician, Taoist, Shaolin disciple and documentary film maker) reveals it all in his latest documentary, Origins. Origins is a bold documentary that takes an unadulterated view on our current life. Along with his team, Pedram started a journey into a remote part of South Africa in search for a deeper understanding of life and here is what they discovered:

Technology is Killing Humanity
Technology has played a large part in our lives for a very long time now. We are the only species on Earth that’s able to harness fire and with this very knowledge, managed to also discover the art of cooking, which

subsequently “unlocked” more parts of our brains. Technology is certainly getting more advanced, but have you ever thought about the cost of technological advancement?
The Truth: The very fire we started is also on the verge of burning all of us. Just as how we are sweeping off the issue of global warming under our carpet, we are also turning a blind eye to the dangers technology may pose to us. How, you ask? The way Shojai and his team sees it, technology has made our relationship with Earth a parasitic one. The use of technology has resulted in the neglection of nature – the use of chemicals, food additives, and the burning of fossil fuel are just some examples of how we are destroying not only nature, but ourselves. The main point here is that we’ve forgotten
how to co-exist with nature, thanks to technology. We need to realise that our survival on Earth has and always be dependant on a symbiotic relationship with nature.
Sugar Addiction:
The Truth:
Actually sugar, has always been the real culprit behind that one issue we all fear: weight gain. Not only is sugar the leading cause for obesity, it’s a fact that we are also seriously addicted to sugar. Believe it or not, but research has shown that sugar is actually eight times more addictive than cocaine. A research done by Connecticut College has shown that rats actually favoured the side of a maze where they were given Oreos more than the other side of maze where they were given an injection of cocaine or morphine.
The term antibiotic is a combination of two words: anti (against) and biotic (life). Against life. This truly sums up the nature of antibiotics – it’s something that kills all of the microbial in our intestines, both good and bad. The lack of good bacteria in our body, is likely one of the reasons for modern illnesses. To remedy this, we need to begin with our own lifestyle. If we start consuming a natural diet, nature will cover us. Don’t worry about the dirt in nature, because we need the friendly bacteria that’s sometimes found in nature. We should also limit the use of antibacterial soap, hand sanitiser and the over-glorified antibiotic pills.

You Are What You Eat Let’s be honest, our current generation has been dining outside more than ever. We rely on restaurants and corporations to provide us with food, but more often than not, these parties cut corners by adding chemicals and cutting down on vital nutrients. It’s bewildering that while we are obsessed with a healthy lifestyle, we still purchase genetically modified food. Well ladies and gentlemen, we got it all wrong. The key to unlock a healthy figure lies in the understanding on two types of food that we have misunderstood all along.
Yes, we can stop directly linking fat to weight gain. Instead, we should really keep an eye on our sugar intake. To be precise, it is not just sugar per se. We need to have a clear understanding on the way our body metabolises carbohydrates (bread, donuts, whole grains, etc) as all these are actually converted into sugar in our body. When we overload ourself with sugar, we will most likely experience weight gain. So people, do watch out on processed food with high level of carbohydrates and artificial sweeteners. The next time you are contemplating to take roti canai over the meaty tandoori chicken, think again.
Fat is Bad: Fat, we’ve misjudged you. We have been misguided by the concept that fat, especially cholesterol, is bad. We believe that eating fat is a one way ticket to weight gain. However, few realise that our brains are made primarily of fat. In fact, cholesterol is needed to enhance the parts of our brains that’s responsible for thinking and memory processing.
We are often bombarded with countless campaigns against high cholesterol but we are not always told that low cholesterol levels are actually dangerously associated to depression and suicide.
A lot of us underestimate the power of meditating, perceiving it as another hippie trend. Well, research has shown that meditation does much more than that.

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away
Shojai believes that modern medicine isn’t entirely good due to its emphasis on the treatment of diseases instead of its prevention. Folks, we are missing out a crucial point here. A majority of medical doctors nowadays are not tapping into the very root of our illnesses. Just like an analogy of gardeners who would examine the root and condition of soil around a withered plant, our body too, should be treated the same way. Instead, we are almost always prescribed with antibiotics whenever we are unwell.

The Power of Zen
Meditation not only calms the brain. It literally fires up the brain. Meditation helps to stimulate the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that’s responsible for impulse control and decision making. In short, consistent meditation helps us to make better decisions, thanks to the ability of better reasoning.
The Sum of it All So should we get rid of technology? Of course not! Technology is here to stay. It is not a competition between man and nature. However, it’s imperative that we find a balance between technology and nature, before it’s too late. You can watch the Origins documentary by searching for “Origins” on YouTube. The Fantastical Land of
LumiAir “Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.” ― Carl Sagan
B
etween 29 November and 24 December 2014, the Sunway Lagoon Amphitheatre was graced with the presence of the LumiAir - A Cirque Sensation group. The group, headed by Producer and Director, Susan Porrett, displayed great acts of dexterity, precision and strength to the Malaysian crowds. “LumiAir has been a work of art, love and passion” she states, “I am honoured to have worked alongside my inspirational creative team on this special production and to bring LumiAir to Sunway Lagoon.” To suit the overall theme of the show, various members of the LumiAir performance group are given imaginative names which suit their roles and performances. The Inx, for example, performed by Lara Milligan, Claudia Valitutti, T’La Morrow, Samantha Stewart and Leah Jacobs are inquisitive child-like characters that inhabit the land of LumiAir and follow the main character wherever she goes. 46

After a short opening speech, the performance started with a song and dance routine performed by the Arc Angel, various dancers and the main character, Diamond (Emily Rowles). The routine evoked a sense of wanderlust and fear as Diamond roamed the lands, later encountering the evil Arc Angel (Nicole Sokolovic) and is attacked by beings of smoke and shadow; she finds a single ray of light and is magically transported to LumiAir, the land of light, colour and magic; thus her adventure begins. The first characters Diamond encounters are the Spirit Dancers (Natalie Keevers, Marley Thorpe, Jessie Anne Myers, Jade Paige, Ashley Evans, Aimee Fittlock, and Karlee Macguire). These colourful whimsical characters are aspects of Diamond’s inner self.
After another brilliant dance routine and aerial performance by the Spirit Dancers and the Inx, Diamond meets the Jesters (Vuas Mangungu, Abiy Feleke and Hassan Jafar). These capricious and mischievous fellows entertained the audience with their hilarious antics and tricks. The Guardian Angels (Samantha Stewart, Leah Jacobs and T’La Morrow) showed off their agility and grace after the Jesters. The crowd was entranced by their ability to effortlessly coordinate their movements into a delightful display. After a quick 15-minute intermission, the audience were reintroduced to the Jesters again. However, they weren’t on stage as expected. They were amongst the crowd, flinging giant inflated balls towards members of the crowd, to induce some form of interactivity. This was followed by a quick routine by the spirit dancers, after which the Monarchs (Celina Malek, Regina Malek and Kinga Grzeskow) were introduced, impressing the crowd with their strength and flexibility; with each Monarch supporting another and contorting into unbelievable shapes. To make things even more exciting for the crowd, the Jesters once again took centre stage. This time around, they invited members of the audience to join them on stage, where they were asked to imitate the Jester’s comical movements.
After that final appearance of the Jesters, the Sovereign (Milena Oksanen) made her appearance; this death defying member of the LumiAir royal family dazzled the crowd with her aerial acrobatic skills. The trapeze was brought to full use here as she soared through the air with unbelievable grace and ease, sometimes even scaring the audience with her moves. The crowd was introduced next to the Royal Guards (Jacek Marks, Pawel Patel), loyal protectors of the Prince of LumiAir. The duo, in similar vein to the Monarchs, showcased their strength, balance and flexibility, balancing on each other and cooperating flawlessly, with a song performance by the Herald (Nicole Sokolovic).
Finally, the Prince of LumiAir (Warren Brophy) made his appearance. As the big finale, the Prince of LumiAir was entrusted with the task of controlling and mastering the Wheel of Death, which provides power to all of LumiAir. The people watched in awe as he skillfully vaulted and ran around the Wheel of Death. Members of the audience were almost on their feet as he produced a skip rope and continued skipping on the contraption. People were really screaming when he covered his head in a black bag and proceeded to continue his performance unhindered, save for a small stumble at the end. As the performance drew to a close, the cast members of LumiAir all proceeded to the stage to bid farewell to the audience. Performances like these are rare in Malaysia and LumiAir is truly an entertaining treat. Campus+: Thank you for having this interview with us. Please tell us a bit more about yourself. Anton Gillich: Hello! My name is Anton Gillich, also known as the Monopoly Man. I am a senior physics lecturer in Sunway University and a part time comedian.
Anton Gillich, also known as the “Monopoly Man”, has a day job as a Senior Physics Lecturer at Sunway University. At night however, he takes on a different persona, entertaining people as a comedian. Campus Plus had the opportunity to take a look at the funny man behind the educator.
C+: What made you pursue the world of stand-up comedy? AG: Having enjoyed quality stand-up and hailing from Montreal, where Just for Laughs originated, I just happened to be at the right place at the right time some two years ago. It was Time Out Comedy Thursday (TOCT) night and while I was watching the show, I turned to my partner, Deborah Joy Peter and said, “I could do that. I’d like to try getting up on stage someday.”Sometime later, she locked me down for a three-minute spot at the December 2012 show.

C+: When did you first perform in front of an audience, and how was the reception? AG: I was a nervous wreck until the day of the show on 6 December, 2012, and I might have been sweating bullets, but entertaining for the first time with mic in hand before a room full of people proved quite the adrenaline rush. I got a few laughs here and there; that routine taught me what worked and what didn’t. C+: Where and when was your most memorable gig to date? AG: The one gig which will always hold a special place in my heart is the second time I performed at TOCT on 3 January, 2013. Instead of the allotted five minutes, I did a solid nine and the crowd seemed to really get into it. After the show, one of the guests came up to me and said that I’d performed a hundred times better than my pilot performance the month prior. It was that particular gig which fuelled my courage to keep at the game. C+: Where do you get most of your material? AG: My flavour of comedy is predominantly of the concise, self-deprecating variety. I generally tend to poke fun at growing old based on my everyday experiences and occasional trips to the doctor’s office or the gym. Apart from the customary ‘old man’ jokes, I’ve found that Canadian references work just as well. I dabble a little in dark humour as well.
C+: Have you received negative comments about your show – how do you deal with it? AG: Naturally, but I suppose it all boils down to individual perception and how one chooses to look at a ‘critique’. If I’m watching a set of mine on video, I’d immediately be able to deduce whether or not I had that performance nailed. I’m my biggest critic, after my partner who’s always quick to give me her take on my routine from the audience’s point-ofview. C+: How does your resemblance to the Monopoly mascot, Rich ‘Uncle’ Moneybags work for you? AG: The whole ‘Monopoly Man’ phenomenon started when senior stand-up comedian, Dr. Jason Leong compared my look (or more specifically my handlebar moustache) to that of the Monopoly Man’s on Facebook. Since then, I’ve kept the ‘stache’ and eventually, I got a suit made and threw a tophat and cane into the mix—as if to announce: “This is me getting into character”. C+: Do you have any advice for our readers who are seeking to become stand-up comedians themselves? AG: My experience has taught me that in order for an aspiring funny-man to get good, that person should allocate a few hours each week to attend comedy shows to get a feel of what a comedy room looks like, especially the energy it exudes. See how the professionals do it and study the elements which go into a killer performance. Also, stick around until after the show and hang out with the ‘boys’ and pay attention to the pointers discussed.

ewellery can make or break your outfit. Why, you ask? At times, you are just too lazy to dress up, or spend a good many hours in front of your wardrobe without finding anything to wear. A little black dress will not be complete without a gold necklace and stacked rings. Even an ensemble that consists of a pair of simple shorts and tank top will not be as stylish without arm candy and a statement necklace. Good thing, we have jewellery to save the day! Historically, the English word “jewel” comes from a combination of the Old French word “jouel” and the Latin word “jocale”, meaning a plaything. (Yes, it is interesting that the original word and the function do not relate at all.) Let’s move on from the history. We, the current generation, are the products of tradition. The fact that we wear many types of jewellery originates from the ancient belief that these pieces carry statement. The ancients used to wear jewellery not only for functional purposes; it marked social/personal statuses, signified affiliations, talismanic protections (amulets), symbolised personal meanings (for instance, showing times of mourning, or luck), and sometimes, it was just for aesthetics. The pieces we have chosen in our Fashion Trend this month, are great pieces that would go well with virtually any outfit. Don’t worry! They aren’t talismans of any sort, so you don’t need to worry about any spirits. What Awaits You
This Winter? Every ending is a new beginning. With Christmas and the end of 2014 behind us, 2015 brings with it a number of thrilling anime. Will the titles for this year’s winter be any good? We’ll have to wait and see, but here are some titles that look promising. Psycho-Pass: The Movie
Shingeki no Kyojin: Kuinaki Sentaku (Attack on Titan: No Regrets) The long-awaited original story of Attack on Titan’s Levi and Erwin Smith is finally out! It serves as a prequel to the main Attack on Titan storyline. Erwin is known as humanity’s only hope of defeating the Titans, thanks to his excellent strategies and bravado. However, things start to change when he meets a thug named Levi from a place called “Underground”, where humans are born (and die), surrounded by the trash from the Capital. This movie explores what happens when Levi and Erwin meet and immediately begin to clash. Learn more about the relationship between these two men and find out how Levi transformed from a street thug to one of the strongest soldiers for humanity.
It has been four years since the death of Makishima Shogo and the disappearance of Kogami Shinya. The Japanese government starts to introduce the “Sibyl System” technology to other countries and ultimately to the rest of the world. However, there is a state that is in the middle of a civil war and the South East Asia Union (SEAUn) brings in the “Sibyl System” as an experiment. As a result, the coastal town of Shambala Float attains temporary peace and safety. Unfortunately, several terrorists from SEAUn appear in Japan and successfully get through the “Sibyl System” and began a number of attacks. It’s up to Tsunemori Akena and her team to travel to Shambala Float and investigate the origins of this terrorist group.
Aldnoah.Zero 2 The ending of Aldnoah.Zero left us hanging as to the fate of its two protagonists. It also wasn’t clear if Troyard Slaine managed to exact his revenge. Thankfully, it’s been confirmed that there’s an Aldnoah.Zero 2 in the making. In this upcoming anime, the ruthless battle between Earth and the Vers Empire continues and at the centre of it all is Slaine. Nothing much is confirmed about this anime yet, but rumour has it the two protagonists from the first season will once again be featured. Over 60 designs by graduates of Limkokwing University of Creativity Technologyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Diploma in Fashion and Retail Design were showcased at the event, revolving around the theme of Ethnic Soldiers. The clothes had a heavy emphasis on various textiles and structure, taking their inspiration from warriors, tribes, soldiers, and historical leaders. Womenswear was an especially mixed bag, with seductive black lace, cherry red silk, tribal prints and leather that would make a dominatrix blush. 33 models from 17 countries such as Kazakhstan, Russia and Brazil brought the designs to life; a nod towards the diversity of the looks.
While seemingly less varied than the womenswear due to the monochromatic palette, menswear still made an impression with subtler yet distinctive accents. For instance, there were double breasted suits, oversized coats, jackets that merged denim and leather, and statement tees. The styling of the looks, while perhaps a tad unconventional for most Malaysian gentlemen, showed innovative ways of styling like pairing tees with harem pants and beanies with long coats. Certainly worth a bookmark in the pages of a male fashionistaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s style manual.

ow many types of caps do you think exist out there? It’s not only the popular trucker cap, or SnapBack – we have to take a look at the whole family as well: the StrapBack, VelcroBack, Five Panel, and the Fitted Caps. They may not be well-known, but they’re just as awesome! The major reason why they are not as popular, is that most people do not really recognise the differences. These differences, however, are distinctive. Their names itself are a hint of their design. The SnapBack uses snaps as a fastener; the StrapBack uses straps; and the VelcroBack uses Velcro. Among these designs, you’ll want to look out for the Fitted Caps family, because it is the most exclusive among the others. It is exclusive in that you’ll have to find a Fitted Caps size that’s closest to your head’s width (which makes it something rather personal), as they can’t be adjusted in anyway. The last brother, the Five Panel is the most unique. It looks like a baseball cap, but instead of six panels that comes with a normal cap, it uses only five large panels, giving it a boxy

look. The cap’s fastener can come in strap, snap, Velcro, or whichever you prefer! Caps are great fashion accessories as they not only protect your eyes from direct sunlight, but also showcase your individuality. You could show support for your favourite football team, or perhaps even declare that you’re the “World’s Greatest Dad”. Needless to say, the vocal range of Mercury and Brian May’s guitar skills go well together for a purely amazing track. Up next is ‘Love Kills’, which is Mercury’s first solo hit. It’s a raw and highly passionate track that is very catchy! Generally, this album is a compilation of some of Queen’s best hits and classic singles. If you’re a fan of Queen, you won’t want to miss this album.

As for ‘Lingering’, it’s a slow and rather romantic song that will have you humming its melody hours after you’ve listened to it. tops Japan’s Tower Records Chart for a Week After releasing their debut album, rookie girl group Lovelyz was crowned as one of the top groups in Japan by Japan’s Tower Records. The band consists of eight girls aged between 16 to 22 and are managed by Woollim Entertainment and have Yoon Sang, a talented musician, as their producer. According to him, it’s the first time he’s handling a girl group, but he’s confident of the success of the group, especially after seeing their efforts in ‘Candy Jelly Love’. He added, “Their preparation was unlike a new group.” A spokesperson from Woollim Entertainment said, “Lovelyz has not officially made their debut in Japan, nor have they confirmed any promotions in Japan. Yet, they have been receiving many messages from the Japanese media, congratulating them on their win on the Tower Records chart.”

This is the seventh extended play from them as well as a special mini-album to celebrate their fifth anniversary. TiME is a six track follow up to their previous extended play, Good Luck. And this time, it’s all about soulful music. ’12:30’ opens the album with a beautiful ballad that captivated our attention successfully. Their soulful voices are accompanied by a piano, resulting in a track that’s slow and smooth. ‘Drive’, on the other hand shows their rap skill and harmonisation excellently. Moreover, the jazzy saxophone in the music makes the entire song irresistible. ‘It’s All Good’ is one of the more outstanding tracks on TiME, because the acoustic guitar driven tune in the music is purely amazing. ‘Stay’ is the only dance track on the album. It begins with a classic piano intro and then to high-energy beats swiftly. TiME ends with ‘So Hot’, one of our favourites. It is an upbeat, sweet and nice mid-tempo track. Grab this album now! It is an album that you won’t be disappointed with.
The guys from GOT7 are back with their first studio album, which is described as “true groove dance music”, so we’re rather excited to see what they got in Identify! ‘Gimme’ is our favourite. It is a catchy and playful R&B dance track that we can’t help dancing to. ‘Take My Hand’ is another great song on the album that makes your heart melt. It is a romantic soft pop tune with the boys’ sweet vocals. We are in love with ‘Magnetic’ too because of its exciting urban beat. It is similar as ‘Gimme’, but they are different in their own way and are equally good! ‘Turn Up the Music’ is where the boys shine. It provides a chance for each of them to show their own distinctive vocals. This is a great dance floor song that has great tempo, a nice beat, powerful vocals and a nice melody. While there is nothing astounding about ‘Stay’, it is still a smooth and enjoyable jazzy song. Overall, this is a unique album from GOT7 that keeps things fresh.

A Pink’s fifth mini album, Pink Luv has finally been released! This album comprises of five original tracks and an instrumental version of ‘LUV’. But what’s really exciting is the fact that this album showcases the distinctiveness of each member’s vocals. ‘LUV’ is an oldschool pop song that imbued with contemporary vocals. The sweet vocals and the hip-hop break beat makes the song both danceable and romantic. ‘Wanna Be’ is where we can listen to each of their voices clearly. This is a stand-out track as it shows the capability of the group. Each of their voices are distinctive, but they are still able to harmonise effectively. The synth claps and piano in ‘Secret’ is wonderful. It is soft, tender and sentimental. As for ‘Not An Angel’, this song makes us happy! It is a cheerful and playful track that boosts one spirits. ‘Love Like A Fairytale’ starts with a nice flute that makes you think you are listening to a drama or an anime’s soundtrack. It isn’t a powerful ballad, but a comfortable and gentle mid-tempo pop song. If you’re looking for sweet love songs, look no further than Pink Luv.
Nicole Jung, a former KARA member has released her first debut solo album, First Romance. This mini album is the touchstone of her being a soloist. The first track of this album, ‘MAMA’, is catchy, delightful and enjoyable. However, this mid-tempo pop song does not show us her potential and ability as a soloist. ‘7-2=Misunderstanding’ is where we can see Jung shine as a soloist. In this song, she is accompanied by Dongwoo of Woolim Entertainment. Dongwoo’s hiphop style of singing is contrasting to Nicole’s singing, making this song rather interesting. There’s also a track called ‘Love’, which is a beautiful and powerful ballad that lets Jung make full use of her vocal range. Without a doubt, First Romance is an album that truly showcases Jung’s potential as a soloist.

While it’s normal to celebrate New Year’s Eve, not everyone around the world celebrates in the same manner and at the same time. This month’s Travel section explores how the new year is celebrated across the globe! Generally, it can be divided into those that celebrate on the 1st of January, and those that don’t.
Those That Celebrate on the 1st of January Around the World Despite time differences and whereabouts, most people nowadays celebrate New Year’s Eve in very similar ways. It’s also that time where we start to come up with resolutions

(the most common is to lose more weight) and wishfully hope that it’ll come true. Apart from creating resolutions, it’s also a time where we reminisce about the year that’s ending. And that’s when we decide to party, feast, drink, dance and admire beautiful fireworks till past midnight. We will then greet each other with well wishes for the upcoming year. Some of us will
spice it up by doing ‘the whole kissing thing’ when it hits 12. For some, it’s kind of a big deal.
All Them Symbols! Yes, Mexicans’ New Year traditions are full of symbols. From house decorations to preparing the table dinner, it is a ritual-filled process with four representative colours. Red boosts improvement in lifestyle and love, yellow
improves working condition in employment, green attracts abundance in financial situations and white encourages better health.

Lastly, they will compose a list of bad and unhappy events that happened over the past twelve months to be thrown into a burning fire before midnight. The act signifies the removal of negative energy.

The absolutely magical Hogmanay Yes, Edinburgh does party during the new year. However, the people from this country celebrate the new year in a rather unique way. Their new year’s celebration is called the Hogmanay! It’s a celebration that marks the beginning of a three-day New Year Festival in Edinburgh. On 28 December, Scotsmen will dress up in Viking attire, light up torches, and line up to march around the capital city’s

In Thailand, the Thais call their new year’s celebration the “Songkran”. The word comes from the saṃkrānti Sanskrit and means “a passing”. The reason why the Thais call it the Songkran is because this celebration is all about splashing water on others, to signify a cleansing of bad luck from a person, while greeting the new year. It’s very apt then, that Songkran means to pass through the new year, cleanly. Similar to the Chinese New Year celebration, the Songkran puts a lot of emphasis on visiting family members. It is during this time that many Thais make their ways to their hometowns to spend time with relatives.

Heavenly Food The hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur getting too much to handle? Take a break and relax at The Front Door CafĂŠ and Backpackers. The classic Chinese placard states that it is a general store, but take a look inside and you will find no knick-knacks for sale, just good, wholesome food. 68

The Front Door Café and Backpackers was opened just a few months ago (29 September 2014 to be exact) by partners Basil Tan, Wai Hong and Sarah. They took over a small historical shop lot in the middle of Kuala Lumpur, the exact location being 78, Jalan Sultan, 50000 Wilayah Persekutuan, Kuala Lumpur.
The main attraction of The Front Door Café and Backpackers is toasted bread. The toasted bread though, isn’t your average kind. There’s a variety of toppings you can choose to go with the toast bread, ranging from sweet to savoury. Highlights include the peanut butter and caramelized banana topping for foodies with a sweet tooth, as well as the cream cheese, avocado and egg combination for customers who enjoy something a little more savoury. Apart from that, there’s the honey, cheese, beef bacon and strawberry mix, which has an interesting taste. Prices are fair with a single toast priced at RM6, a set of three at RM18 and a set of five at RM25.
I was pleasantly surprised by the carbonara, which is priced at RM17. The pasta was cooked just right, without the inherent mushiness that plague some establishments. The sauce itself was nice and thick, chock full of delicious add-ons like beef bacon and mushrooms. I was also able to try out the mango and prawn salad, which is also priced at RM17. The sweetness of the mango contrasted very well with the pickled cucumber slices and an assortment of leafy greens.
For the thirsty, The Front Door Café and Backpackers offer a variety of Tapping Tapir sodas at RM9 per bottle. Other drinks include a variety of coffees, that are priced variedly. A single shot of espresso is sold for RM3, while mochas can be bought for RM10. The barista who served us was very skilled, with intricate and delightful patterns artfully drawn on the latte.
The atmosphere of the place was very calm and relaxing, with the surrounding walls instilling a sense of history. The décor and furnishing also gives the place a very rustic and down-to-earth feel; a beautifully hand drawn hallway at the rear of the café helps the premises stand out even more.
The Front Door Café and Backpackers is open every day of the week. Operating hours are 10am – 6pm on weekdays, and 10am – 8pm on weekends. It can get a little crowded during lunch, so get there early if you want to grab a seat! JAN 2015 | CAMPUS PLUS | 69

Ushering in 2015 with New Games! Dying Light Dying Light is a first-person action survival game set in a zombie apocalypse with an open world similar to South American slums and cities. Players are able to explore an expansive urban environment, scavenging the cities and settlements for supplies and crafting weapons to defend against the zombie hordes. Dying Light contains a day and night cycle system. During the day, the zombies are slow and easily visible allowing players to go through them without much hassle. Players can scavenge, set up traps, save random survivors, and make their way to airdrops. During the night, the zombies become much more dangerous. They gain the ability to sprint after the player and have increased damage, as well as the ability to jump and climb buildings like the player.

Saints Row: Gat out of Hell Saints Row: Gat out of Hell is an open world action/adventure game. The game is a standalone expansion to Saints Row IV, so players do not need a copy of Saints Row IV to play Gat Out of Hell. Gat Out of Hell shares many gameplay elements and aspects with the previous Saint Row games. The game is primarily played as a third-person shooter in an open world city littered with quests, secondary objectives, and various collectibles. Superhuman abilities return from Saints Row IV. Gat out of Hell introduces “angelic flight”, giving wings to the player. Unlike past Saints Row games, players cannot customize the playable characters; however, by importing a Saints Row IV save games, players can import their custom Boss character to replace the default Boss.

Grand Theft Auto V PC Release The long awaited PC release is just around the corner. GTA V is the fifth instalment of the infamous GTA series of openworld, action/adventure video games. Set within the fictional state of San Andreas (based on Southern California), players can play as three criminals, and follow through their efforts to commit grand heists and larceny. The open world design lets players freely roam San Andreas, which includes open countryside and the fictional city of Los Santos (based on Los Angeles). The new release for the current gen consoles and PC include an all new first-person perspective option; increased draw distance; finer texture details; denser traffic; upgraded weather effects; and new wildlife and vegetation. The PC version also being 4K resolution compatible.

Evolve Evolve is set on Shear, a distant planet located in the “Far Arm” of space, where humanity has travelled to in the distant future. The established colonies are soon attacked by alien monsters, and hunters are recruited to deal with the threat. Evolve is an asymmetrical multiplayer game, pitting players as hunters against another player as an alien monster. Both hunters and monsters have unique abilities. The player who controls the monster can kill other smaller creatures to evolve and become stronger by entering a cocoon stage, leaving itself vulnerable for a short duration. There are various power-ups that both hunters and monsters can obtain by killing the local wildlife. The hunters are tasked with killing the monster; while the monster must either kill all four hunters, or complete a secondary objective such as destroying a human base or power plant.

War does not determine who is right, only who is left. - Bertrand Russell Video games about war these days are not really about the war. They are mainly about showing off that brand spanking new graphics and physics engine, they are show-pieces for various continuing franchises, further desensitizing the image of war. But every once in a while, someone does something different. This War of Mine is a survival video game developed by 11 bit studios, which is founded by former developers and staff members from the famed CD Projekt (developers of The Witcher series) and Metropolis Software. The setting is based on the Siege of Sarajevo, with the player controlling a group of survivors 72

seeking shelter in a bombed out house, eking out survival by scavenging, stealing or killing for food, water, materials and weapons. The gameplay is reminiscent of old pointand-click adventure games, with movement controlled entirely by the mouse. You click to move and interact with the gameâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s environment. The game is divided into two parts, the day period when your survivors can build up the shelter, cook, eat, trade and craft new items, using scavenged items. At night, you assign your survivors to either rest, stand guard or scavenge. It is a precarious balance, too few people standing guard and you might be raided, stay on guard for too long and survivors get extremely tired. The scavenging part of the game was when I felt the most tense. A rudimentary stealth system shows you how much noise you are making, make too much noise and you might alert the people in the area; some may not try to stop you, but often, your trespassing will be met with lethal force. Survivors die easily. A few well-placed bullets and knife wound will ensure his/her doom. You can equip your own weapons, though firearms are hard to come by and ammunition is scarce. Killing or stealing from other innocents who, like yourself are just trying to survive will negatively impact the emotional state of your survivors; and when your survivors see no way out, they may try to take their own lives. When I was playing through the game, I really felt a sense of desperation and hopelessness,

which is something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rarely felt in modern video games. Overall, I really liked This War of Mine as it presents a very different perspective when compared to most modern war games, like the Call of Duty series, for example.

aming Headsets are a strange breed, they are judged under slightly different criteria compared to mainstream headphones. They are essential for any serious gamer, be it to pinpoint footsteps and gunshots in a shooter, or to communicate with your fellow party members in an MMO.
Design/Features The HyperX Cloud features a sleek and elegant design, with its body made out of matte plastic and brushed aluminium ear shells. The headband is covered with leather for comfort and a stitched HyperX logo on the top gives it a premium feel. The ear cushions are covered with genuine leather, which makes wearing these headphones highly comfortable, even after long periods of gaming and use. Included in the box is a set of velour ear cushions just in case you don’t like the leather ones. They are easily interchanged with a quick twist and pull.
HyperX Cloud Headset clicks and crunches startled me. The noise cancellation of the HyperX Cloud is great as well. I tried playing in several noisy environments and found that ambient noise barely crept in. As for the detachable microphone, I found that it performed rather well. Although my voice sounded a little tinny in conversations, I was able to converse with a few of my friends without any problems. They were able to hear me clearly and determine what I was saying, without much issues. I like the fact that the microphone boom is flexible, making it easy to adjust to get the optimal position. Needless to say, I found it best to position it directly in front of my mouth.

I am happy to report that the audio quality of the HyperX Cloud headset exceeded my expectations. While playing shooters, the directional feedback was great and I was able to determine enemy positions with surprising accuracy. In games with eerie atmospheres, such as ‘Metro 2033’, I kept double checking my surrounding areas as even the smallest
The HyperX Cloud headset is a solid addition to any gamer’s arsenal. It may not be as wellknown as other headsets in the market, but it sure as hell packs a punch. With the price of the HyperX Cloud currently under RM300, it is a great bargain for anyone looking for a great gaming headset.

Some may have better memory than others, but it remains a fact that it’s rather impossible to recall a conversation wordfor-word. For this, we have recording devices and the Philips VTR8000 is a great example of a simple yet functional recording device.

On the right, there’s the audio record button and a ‘Hold’ button to avoid accidental button presses. At the bottom is a microSD slot that lets you increase the capacity of this device. Other notable features include 8GB of internal storage that stores up to 2,120 hours worth of voice recordings or up to 150 minutes of video. Apart from that, it also comes with an adapter that lets you record conversation on a land line.

Audio and Video Quality
The Philips VTR8000 is a rather interesting product in that it’s not only able to record audio, but video as well. That’s right, the VTR8000 has an integrated camera that records in AVI format with a resolution of 640 x 480. To make it easier to navigate the features of this device, there’s an OLED display that has colour. In terms of design, the VTR8000 is pretty much able to fit into your pocket. As for functionality, you’ll find most of its controls at the front itself. There’s a play/pause button, a stop button and a button to instantly record
We tested the VTR8000 by recording a random conversation in a quiet environment. We then repeated this, in an environment with as much ambient noise as possible. Once we were done with the recordings, we played it in an office environment and found that the quality of both recordings were good. Amazingly, we were able to get very usable recordings even with loud ambient noises. As for video quality, the integrated camera does a good job at capturing video, but with a resolution of 640 x 480, the amount of detail that’s captured isn’t anything
to shout about. It performs considerably well in environments like lecture halls and other welllit environments.
Connectivity There’s a mini USB port on the left that lets you connect directly to a PC for easy file transfers as well as to charge the internal battery. In addition, there’s the two aforementioned 3.5mm jacks, which allows you to use an external microphone, or plug in headphones to better judge the audio quality.

Aston Martin’s DB10

rom the previous hits of Skyfall to Casino Royale, the title of James Bond’s movies has always been a door to a story of mysteries waiting to be solved. ‘Spectre’, our next Bond film is not an exception. To 007 enthusiasts, we all know where this is heading, right? The next film promises what a lot of us have been waiting for ages: the return of super villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld and his criminal organization, SPECTRE. Hopping on to the next ultimate question, what car would Britain’s finest be driving? It’s no surprise that James Bond will once again drive an Aston Martin as it has been long associated with the Bond franchise. The new Aston Martin DB10 is deemed to be a successor of 007’s classic car, the Aston Martin DB5 which was driven by actor Sean Connery in ‘Goldfinger’ 50 years ago. The DB5 model has since made its appearance in a total of six Bond’s films. According to director Sam Mendes, the Aston Martin DB10 is a specially designed, one-off car that is made exclusively for the film. The model will be limited to a production of 10 vehicles, all of which will only be used in the film. Under the lead of Aston Martin’s creative chief officer, special design and engineering teams had worked hand-in-hand with Sam Mendes to design the car.
So what else do we know about 007’s new ride? Firstly, the car is powered by a 4.7 litre-eight-cylinder V8 engine rather than a V12. In size, it is said to sit between the existing Vantage and DB9. The DB10’s panels are also supposedly made from carbonfibre.

While we won’t be getting the exact same DB10 that’s featured in the upcoming Bond movie, it’s likely that this DB10 will serve as a platform for the successor to the current DB9. According to rumours, the successor to the DB9 will likely come by 2016.
