ou know, just today, I came across a quote that read, “Take the time every day to be thankful for what you have. Of course, you could have more - but you could also have much less”. My first response was - that’s so true. We should be thankful not only when good things happen to us but also appreciate the little joys in life. Joys such as… laughing! In our ‘Wellness’ section of this issue (page 65), we’ll be encouraging you to laugh. Not stifle a giggle, but to laugh until your sides hurt, your eyes water and you can’t catch your breath. We have good reasons for asking you to do so too! You’ll see that something as simple as laughing your head off can help boost your immune system, suppress stress hormones, lower your blood pressure and more. It’s factual! Speaking of true stories, our team at Campus Plus took to the field to speak to some of Malaysia’s most popular cosplayers. They shared some first-hand knowledge and information on costume role-playing. Did you know that some cosplayers belong to non-profit organisations and that they help raise funds at cosplay events, or that cosplayers source material from hardware stores and workshops to make their own costumes? (pages 48 & 49). They also shared their thoughts on the case of Ng Yuk Tim, the victim of the sensationalised ‘cosplay murder’. Students at the Curtin University’s Intensive English Programme and invited guests attended a first-ever Australia Day Sausage Sizzle to celebrate Australia Day. The celebration was also attended by over 300 staff of the university and their family members. Among the guests were Chairman of the Curtin Sarawak Council Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan; Counsellor – Education at the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur Kate Welsh; Curtin Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski; Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Ir. YudiSamyudia and Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Ching. Delegates of the inaugural five-day IOV-Youth Asia Congress hosted by the university and the International Organisation of Folk Art (IOV) also joined in the festivities. Barbeque-style Australian food which included the proverbial Aussie sausage on a bun and damper in addition to other barbecue favourites, as well as a raffle were served at the foyer of the Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre. There was also the planting of acacia trees by Datuk Patinggi Dr. Chan, Welsh and Prof. Mienczakowski in an ‘Australian Grove’ on the campus to mark the occasion. Two Awards At the World

Inventor Award Festival 2013

At the recent AUSMAT (Australian Matriculation Programme) Achievement & Appreciation Awards, Sunway AUSMAT students celebrated their remarkable achievements in last year’s WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) examinations. Top student and President of Student Council for AUSMAT 2013, Gavin Gan Yew Meng received the Special Course Award for English as Additional Language & Dialect (EALD). This top notch award went to Gavin for obtaining the highest mark in EALD worldwide. Gavin was also a recipient of the Special Certificate of Distinction along with Vivian Tan Ai Wen for Accounting & Finance and Oliver Leonard Jalleh for Business Management & Enterprise. This Certificate of Distinction is awarded to students who are in the top 0.5 per cent of candidates in a WACE subject in the 2013 WACE exam worldwide. The event also paid tribute to the AUSMAT Student Council who have proven that they are not only good academically but excel in their time management as well as they have been active in organising and running events, being student ambassadors and also academic mentors to their peers.

UTAR Faculty of Engineering and Science(FES) team achieved the highest honours for their two inventions in the respective categories of Civil Engineering and Construction at the Awards Ceremony of the World Inventor Award Festival (WIAF) 2013 held in Seoul, South Korea. The winning team comprised of Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr Low Kaw Sai, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tioh Ngee Heng and Assistant Prof. Dr. Ng Soon Ching. Their two winning inventions were ‘Lightweight Concrete Infill Buoyant System and the Method Thereof’ and ‘Membrane Encased Lightweight Concrete or Mortar Panel and Block’. Ir. Dr. Low represented the team to attend the Awards ceremony where he received the Order of Merit for Civil Engineering and the Order of Merit for Construction. He received the awards from the Chairman of WIAF Commission cum President of Korea Invention News (KINEWS) Soung-Mo Hong. KINEWS is the first newspaper publisher on inventions in South Korea. The two World Inventor Orders of Merit awards were presented in the form of medals and certificates. According to the Chairman, the grand prizes are of exceptional quality and value, unlike that of the gold, silver or bronze awards normally presented at international invention exhibitions. The World Inventor Award served to bestow inventors with the high-valued Order of Merit in recognition of them as world inventors from their respective communities. 8

In conjunction with Malaysia’s participation in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia (SEMA) 2014, Shell FuelSave Ambassador Fahrin Ahmad embarked on a two-day driving challenge across the Klang Valley with actress and model Lisa Surihani. Dubbed the Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driving Challenge, the event saw Fahrin and Lisa visiting selected colleges and universities participating in SEMA 2014, as the former coached the latter on how to be a more fuel-efficient driver. Along the way, they met and greeted students and consumers, played a variety of exciting Target One Million games and even conducted an exciting sketch specially created to bring the Shell FuelSave tips to life. Over 150 student teams from 16 countries across Asia and the Middle East competed in this fifth annual SEMA event, which hit the streets of Manila, Philippines, for the first time. In Malaysia, over 18 teams participated this year. Fahrin and Lisa visited three universities, namely GermanMalaysian Institute, Monash University Malaysia and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) to learn more about the cars of tomorrow designed for SEMA. Visit By IBM Experts

To INTI

INTI recently hosted a forum which featured six international IBM executives who were part of IBM’s Corporate Service Corps. This was one of many collaboration efforts between INTI and IBM to help students excel in their future careers. Others include projects, exhibitions, on-campus interviews, workshops, career coaching and mentorship sessions. The visit by IBM experts was part of IBM’s community service efforts. Earlier, the 2013 IBM Smarter Cities Challenge Grant was awarded to the state of Negeri Sembilan, where the university is located. The IBM Team took the opportunity to explain about IBM’s Smarter Cities Challenge Grant and they firmly believe that they can successfully contribute towards plans to make Negeri Sembilan an even better place to live and work in. The hour and a half long forum which was witnessed by more than 280 students was followed by mentorship and coaching by the team of six experts for 40 final year students to give them an edge in their transition to the workforce. HELP University is MAPCU Champion For The 10th Time 2013 proved to be another success story for HELP University in the Malaysian Private Universities and Colleges MAPCU Sports as they captured the MAPCU Sports Championship for the 10th time. Since the event’s debut in 2003, HELP University has emerged the champion 10 times out of 11. This time, 22 sports events were contested and participated by most IPTS Colleges and Universities. HELP University emerged champions in seven events. They were also 1st Runner-up in five other events and 2nd Runnerup in another four. HELP sportsmen and sportswomen also emerged as champions in taekwando and athletics in the MAHSISWA games. With the encouragement and support given by the Department of Student Affairs, sportsmen and sportswomen from the university scaled new heights by representing the country in major championships especially in judo, table tennis, basketball and taekwando.

Presents Its Rural Development Plan

Sarawak Ministry of Rural Development Permanent Secretary Datuk Haji Chaiti Haji Bolhassan and Federal Ministry of Rural Development Principal Assistant Secretary Ramdan Baba visited Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently to hear and discuss the university’s bid for the funding of its Rural Development Plan which was presented by Curtin Sarawak Research Institute Dean of R&D and Acting Director Professor Clem Kuek. The Curtin Sarawak plan is an integrated approach towards the development of rural communities where, after the initial introduction of electricity supplies via micro-hydro or solar energy, other initiatives can follow. Two sites, namely Ulu Lawas and Ulu Baram, have been selected for electrification. Integrated into the plan is the provision of town-grade water and tagang systems* for high-value indigenous fishes. The implementation of the first phase will draw on the expertise of the Departments of Civil & Construction, Electrical & Computer and Mechanical Engineering at Curtin Sarawak and is estimated to cost RM9.4 million. The establishment of electricity supply will allow for the proposed follow-up initiative, which is the marketing of the Geographical Indication Borneo Highland Rice, a plan to be developed through a collaboration between the state Department of Agriculture and Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business. *Tagang is an Iban word which means ‘refrain’. Therefore a tagang system literally refers to a system refraining anyone from catching fishes or other marine life. For more information on Curtin Sarawak, visit www.curtin.edu.my.

Taylor’s University Student Named

Nestle Professional Culinary Arts Award Champion Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts (TCHT) swept up the major awards at the recent Nestle Professional Culinary Arts competition, with student Ashwin Nicholas Oon declared as Champion and TCHT lecturer Chef Farouk Othman named the ‘Coach of the Year’ for the fourth consecutive time. Nicholas, who’s currently in the second semester of the Advanced Diploma in Gastronomy and Patisserie, beat 12 other culinary arts students to take home the coveted title. The 21-year old joins the rank of three other champion TCHT students, all of whom were coached by Chef Farouk. They are Foo Ee Lynn, Chen Kim Leun and Barscpain Nea who won in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively. Chef Farouk, who coached Nicholas for two months before the competition, shared that Nicholas was selected to participate in this competition because of his positive attitude and his willingness to improve his techniques. Both men expressed joy upon their victories and Chef Farouk declared that his students’ intense longing to excel and be champions led to his winning record. 12

With 2014 being the auspicious Year of the Horse, ALFA College galloped into the Lunar New Year by organising a special ‘Ride to the Occasion’ exhibition at its premises in Subang Square. The exhibition, which kicked off on 15th January and continued to run until 28th February, featured a range of artistic and creative expressions depicting the horse as its main theme. Its main ‘Postcard Design’ category, which was open to all ALFA students, staff, alumni and friends received encouraging response with submissions from near and far such as Japan, United Kingdom, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Germany, Iran, Pakistan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Australia, Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan. In total, a staggering 1,258 card designs were received, all of which are now on full display at the college. Besides postcard designing, participants also indulged in other creative activities from varying categories such as ‘Paper Cutting’, ‘3D Horse designing’ and ‘Chinese Calligraphy’.

IIAM And AIMST University

Sign MoU

The Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia (IIAM) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AIMST University to collaborate on the introduction of a new Undergraduate Degree programme named BSc (Hons) Internal Auditing and Management. Introduced through the Faculty of Business and Management of AIMST, the new Degree programme is aimed to commence from August 2015 and is based on Malaysian Qualification Agency requirements and guidelines. In addition to the degree programme, the partnership will also see the introduction of a Certified Internal Auditor Programme (CIA) which is co-facilitated together with IIAM to provide global CIA certification at AIMST University. “Our mission at AIMST is to be a worldclass university, achieving excellence in both teaching and research and to be engaged in the service of society to promote lifelong education. Folk Art Youth-Asia Congress 2014

Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) hosted the first-ever International Organisation of Folk Art (IOV) Youth Asia Congress in Asia at the Curtin Sarawak campus. Themed ‘Tastes of Asia – A Cultural Journey’ – Asian Peace through Cultural Understanding, the congress was organised by the Leadership and Entrepreneurship Centre (LEC) of the University Life Department. 80 delegates from 16 countries including Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Taiwan, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan attended the congress where they participated in dynamic discussions on how food impacts cultures and societies. The congress particularly focused on the intangible cultural heritage of food (traditional cultures, religions, medicines and others); UNESCO mandate on the cultural heritage and why we should protect it and the shaping of a new narrative for globalisation, consumption and mass production in the global economy. It will also feature discussions on future projects, with focus on collaborations among youths of Asia. Throughout the five-day congress, the delegates were involved in paper presentations, cluster discussions and workshops, visits to local markets and Iban longhouses, practical demo of food recipes from various countries and networking dinner. HELP University’s Korean Summer Exchange Programme saw students from a Korean University being partnered with HELP University’s Malaysian studies. The Malaysian buddies’ duties included guiding the Korean students to discover and experience Malaysia both as tourists and students. However, all good things must come to an end and after a month-long run came the time to bid farewell. It was a fun and bittersweet night for all of them. Although they were buddies for only a month, they forged friendships to last a lifetime. Even though there was an obvious language barrier between the two groups, they still managed to bond. It was that very bond that reduced some of the students to tears during the farewell party. As they say, this doesn’t mean goodbye; this means see you later! The night ended with the Malaysian buddies making promises to stay in touch and making plans to visit their Korean buddies in Seoul one day. Antabax Raises RM53,000 For

Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO)

Antabax, in collaboration with leading Malaysian retailer Giant has raised RM53,672.26 in funds for Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) through its ‘Give Hope, Receive Good Health’ campaign. The campaign saw 10% of sales from the entire Antabax antibacterial personal care range from any of the 128 Giant outlets nationwide being channelled to WAO in support of its Refuge and Child Care Centre. A simple cheque presentation was held at Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd’s headquarters, followed by a talk entitled ‘No Use For Abuse’ for Lam Soon and Giant staff. The talk was on identifying signs of violence against women and the follow up action to be taken. WAO Executive Director Ivy Josiah said that while there is much more to be done for women’s rights, the response to the Antabax-Giant ‘Give Hope, Receive Good Health’ fundraising campaign shows that Malaysians are aware of the issue and are willing to support organisations that provide much needed assistance. Malaysia’s First Cat Café Malaysia’s first cat café follows a worldwide trend that has been spanning in cities across Japan, Austria, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Hungary, Spain, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Russia and just last month, France. Unlike other cafés, The Country Cat Café does not serve the usual food and beverages found elsewhere. Instead, they offer pet-friendly food for both humans and their feline friends. Mind you, the food is served in pet food bowls. The Country Cat Café resides in a cosy and beautifully decorated pet store, The Country Pet Store, which provides the usual pet shop services such as grooming and spa. It is also a hotel for pets. Currently, the main visitors to the café are students and working adults looking for a safe and cosy environment to relax with their cats. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Death

Won’t Affect The Hunger Games 46-year-old actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead with a syringe in his arm in his New York City apartment. Circumstances suggest that the actor died of an overdose. New York City police found up to 70 bags of suspected heroin inside his home a day after his death. The Oscar-winning actor was last known for his role as rebel leader and former game-maker Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games. Hoffman is said to have already completed the vast majority of his work on The Hunger Games finale, the two-part Mockingjay. However, it was later revealed that the actor had one major, emotional scene left to film for Mockingjay - Part 2. “We’re all extremely sad, but as it relates to production, it’s going to have no impact. Obviously, we’re going to have a couple of work-around issues but the movie will still be creatively whole. His performances in both remaining movies will be up to the best of his craft. We feel it will be a good tribute to him”, said a Lionsgate exec. Mockingjay - Part 1 hits theatres in November, with Mockingjay - Part 2 scheduled for November 2015. 18

Future Music Festival Asia 2014 (FMFA 2014), Southeast Asia’s largest music festival, announced a change of venue to the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. The event, which takes place from 13th to 15th March, was previously scheduled to be held at MINES Wonderland. Livescape Asia director Iqbal Ameer said that the change of venue was due to the unexpected increase in attendees at this year’s festival. “By moving to the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, FMFA will still be held at a venue close to the city. The National Stadium is also an iconic monument, one that Malaysians can identify with and is a proud symbol of our nation. It’s a fitting venue as all eyes will be on this country in March as we look to host over 20,000 fans from abroad this year. Moreover, the Bukit Jalil LRT station, which is practically at the doorstep of the festival, will be extending its operating hours from the 13th – 15th March, providing festival goers with the convenience of getting to and from the festival site without causing traffic congestion”, he said. The festival’s 2014 edition expanded to three days this year with over 30 world renowned acts set to thrill close to 85,000 fans. Selena Gomez Secretly Checked Into Rehab ABC News has confirmed that Selena Gomez checked into a treatment centre a.k.a rehab for two weeks. Sources say Selena went in for a combination of problems, including alcohol, pot and prescription Ambien. However, her rep shot down tabloid rumours claiming that the ‘Come & Get It’ singer checked into The Meadows centre in Arizona in January for drug and alcohol abuse. “Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but not for substance abuse”, her rep said. There were already signs that something was amiss, for around that time, 21-year-old Selena Gomez announced that she was cancelling tours in Asia (apparently, this includes Malaysia) and Australia to focus on herself. “My fans are so important to me and I would never want to disappoint them, but it has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years of putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be. Back for a second year, auditions kicked off last month as they visited schools, colleges and shopping malls in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor. In 99 seconds, contestants have to show off their skills, be it dancing, singing, martial arts expertise, etc. Auditions were held at HanXing College, Alfa International College, New Era and University Tunku Abdul Rahman from 18th – 21st February. On 25th, 26th and 28th February, auditions were held at Sunway University College Johor Baru, UCSI (South Wing) Johor Baru and Crescendo International College Johor Baru. From 11th – 14th March, they will be heading to UCSI, In-House Multimedia College, Dasein Academy of Art and International College of Music. On 26th and 29th March, those in Penang will get to audition at KDU College and 1st Avenue. This year, winners will walk away with RM5,000 cash prize each, for male and female champions. Come 26th March, Kuala Lumpur will host the 15th edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards. If you don’t know what that is, well, it’s the biggest awards ceremony to honour the best in the world of sports. It is also known as the ‘Oscars’ of the sports world. Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy Edwin Moses, said in a statement, “I am delighted that the 2014 Awards is to be staged in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Needless to say, it also boosts a woman’s attractiveness. A study was conducted by P&G Beauty & Grooming where lead investigator Nancy Etcoff, PhD., Assistant Clinical Professor at Harvard University and Associate Researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry concluded that makeup is actually a powerful tool in any woman’s arsenal – should she choose to use it – when striving to be perceived as more likeable, trustworthy and competent. Study participants were shown images of 25 different women, each sporting 1 of 4 different looks: no makeup; subtly or “naturally” made up; “professionally” made up and lastly, “glamorously” made up. Subjects were not allowed to look in a mirror, lest their feelings about the way they looked affect observers’ impressions. One hundred forty-nine adults (including 61 men) judged the pictures for 250 milliseconds each, which was enough time to make a snap judgement. It resulted in all three of the made up looks garnering

increased ratings of attractiveness, competence, likeability and trust. When 119 different adults (including 30 men) were given unlimited time to look at the same faces, the “glamorous” look, which was the one with the most makeup, varied slightly. It was judged to be significantly more attractive and competent than the faces without makeup, which were found to be equally likeable but less trustworthy. This study went on to reveal which makeup look was best for certain situations. The results suggest that depending on which aspect of your personality you want communicated to others , it’s possible to manipulate your style of makeup to get what you want. However, there are some women who did not view the findings of the study as progress. A law professor at Standford University stated that she didn’t wish to spend 20 minutes applying makeup and did not buy the theory that the quality of her teaching depended on the amount of makeup she has on. She is no “beauty basher” but is clearly against the whole idea about how attractiveness can spill over into judgements of one’s competence and job performance. According to her, individuals should be judged on the basis of competence, not the application of cosmetics.

With cosmetics, a woman has complete control over her looks. Makeup enables a woman to transform herself, not only in how she looks, but also how she feels about herself. Makeup makes women look more likeable or more approachable.

They were initially worn by postmen and policemen and were touted as the most comfortable, durable and lightweight of their kind in comparison to competitors at the time. A specific range of “Made In England” products are still manufactured in the Cobbs Lane factory in Wollace, England, the birth factory of the original Dr. Martens boots. The factory, which has been making footwear for the Griggs family since 1901, houses a close-knit team schooled in the art of traditional shoe-making and the unique process that makes Dr. Martens like no other shoe on earth. The first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line on 1st April, 1960. The manufacturing process has been fine-tuned and perfected ever since – from the cutting of the leather hides to the heat-sealing with a blade of fire that welds the air-cushioned sole to the upper.

ast year, over a weekend in March, unsuspecting shoppers at Sunway Pyramid were greeted by a slew of youngsters donning bright and colourful makeup, wigs of various lengths and styles, crazy contact lenses and out-ofthis-world costumes. For some, the quirky characters might’ve been familiar i.e. as seen on TV, while others might have felt that there must’ve been an invasion of some sort. Well, the truth is, there was a kind of invasion – a cosplay takeover (not a hostile one, though). The event that was taking place was the Animax Carnival Malaysia 2013. ‘Cosplay’, short for ‘costume play’ or ‘costume roleplay’ is a performance art in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. It was a concept that started in Western pop culture events before getting adapted into Japanese pop culture. Cosplayers often interact to create a subcultured centre on roleplay.

The day Cosplay made local headlines Lately however, the term, ‘cosplay’ has been tainted, so to speak, due to the gruesome murder of 15-year-old Ng Yuk Tim, allergedly by a 23-year-old cosplayer. To jog your memory, the suspect, Poon Wai Hong, allegedly tried to rape young Yuk Tim before bludgeoning her head with a dumbbell on 20th October last year. Her body was found in a suitcase at Kota Kemuning in Shah Alam the next day. Needless to say, the news shook the nation. The cosplay community has since been feeling a brunt of the incident. Yuan, a 22-yearold concept artiste at an animation house, who has been ‘in the scene’ since 2007, says, ‘cosplay murder’ - by looking at a headline like that, most parents will go berserk if their child’s a cosplayer or if they got to know of someone involved cosplay. So, what would have happened if the headlines read ‘Businessman murder’ instead? Would it then mean that all businessmen have to quit their jobs due to the implications? Basically, danger does not discriminate, cosplay or no cosplay.”

The undermined values Meanwhile, Jean-Yves Sibert, who often goes by his ‘pop culture’ nickname ‘Crim’, laments, “Cosplay is a hobby for everyone who fancies this kind of thing and is not something that would motivate a person to harm another human being physically. We don’t blame guns for the killing of people, we blame its user. Personally, I think the cosplay term was misused to spice up the situation. Newspapers do this all the time to boost its sales. With or without cosplay, cases like Yuk Tim’s happen all over the world”. According to Sibert, Cosplay has a lot of positive values that can teach individuals to be more outspoken, confident, creative, and sociable. He added that he has personally seen cosplay help socially awkward people break free from their shyness and join a community based on common interests. Sibert has been active in the community for six whole years now and he adds that other than being involved out of sheer passion, he also helps raise funds at events to do good! He’s a proud member of two non-profit organisations called ‘501st Legion’ and ‘Heroes 4 Kids’. These are testaments that there’s more than what meets the eye e.g. sensationalised news and cartoon character costumes.

Beyond mere costume play Two of the most notable cosplay events in Malaysia are none other than the Animax Carnival Malaysia and Comic Fiesta. At these events, visitors and anime enthusiasts are treated to a weekend of traditional and modern carnival games and fun activities, much like how it’s done in the land of the rising sun. Contrary to popular belief, the extravaganza was beyond just cosplay. According to avid cosplayer 24-year-old Jonathan Goon aka ‘Dei’, there’s usually lots of stuff going on during a cosplay event. “There’s the cosplay competition, where participants go up against each other on stage with performances and skits. Then we have singing competitions, where you get to sing your favourite songs and try to win a prize. Danceoffs are pretty fun, where during the closing of an event, songs are played and everyone is encouraged to let off steam and just dance away with their friends. We also have the gaming competitions and live-action roleplaying activities where you have to get into character to earn points and prizes,” said Goon. The Animax Carnival Malaysia 2013 featured a special showcase by Japanese songstress May’n who is best known as the singing voice of character Sheryl Nome in the hit anime series, “Macross Frontier”. Cosplay contestants created and wore costumes of their chosen ‘Fairy Tail’ character to compete for prizes worth over RM10,000. Other cosplayers simply took the opportunity to display their colourful costumes, most of which were meticulously handmade and the results of hours of blood, sweat and tears, so to speak.

When asked about his inspirations and costumes, Jean-Yves Sibert said, “I just pick characters that I like and put them on my ‘To-Do’ list. Usually the ones that are childhood favourites get the priority. First, it starts out with reverse engineering from using animation/ movie/comic references, then I decide if it’s practical to wear. Next, I source out materials to predict its budget. The materials are sourced from online stores, as not all materials are available locally in Australia/Malaysia. I prefer to make costumes as close as possible to its actual resemblance and quality as in the movie. I always ask myself, “If that were real and used in the field, how would it be done?’”. Meanwhile, Jonathan Goon confesses that the materials for his getups had to be sourced from the the least expected places such as car fabrication shops, workshops and hardware shops. “Most of my materials are imported from overseas as they’re almost impossible to find in Malaysia. Parts of my proton pack from Ghostbusters are from all over the world, ranging from the US, Canada, UK and even Brazil!”, he added.

The growth of a bold culture So, how has the cosplay culture and community grown in Malaysia in the recent years? Well, quite a bit! Let’s take the annual Comic Fiesta as an example. Comic Fiesta started as a small exhibition at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in 2002 with a somewhat weak turnout. In 2003, the event moved to Ancasa Hotel and Spa to house a turnout of double its predecessor. By 2012, Comic Fiesta was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and it drew over 30,000 attendees across a two-day span. Needless to say, it’s now known as Malaysia’s largest comics, games and animation convention. Having taken a walk down memory lane and personally witnessing the growth of the culture and community, Jonathan Goon says, “With the proliferation of social media sites, I don’t see much of the camaraderie between new cosplayers nowadays. Before Facebook and other sites, most of us just had a single forum to talk to other cosplayers, and we bonded through that. Meet-ups, hangouts, art jams and ‘yumcha’ sessions were all ways of how we grew close. Now, you can just make a group on Facebook, invite people in, and not meet with them until the date of the event! I don’t mind

making new friends, but I tend to stay closer to those I’ve come to know over the years.” Jean-Yves Sibert agrees with this sentiment. “I’ve witnessed them from the time they were a small, shy community into the committed and daring one they have become now. This is the change I have been noticing every year in the past six years, when I come back from Australia for Comic Fiesta. Malaysia is partially prepared for this pop culture exposure, but personally, I think the local cosplayers need to be aware that the public is not as open-minded as Western countries. For example, in Australia, I go all out into roleplaying (acting) the character but in Malaysia, I hold back as people might freak out. aid to be the biggest music festival in Southeast Asia, Future Music Festival Asia has come a long and far way since its inaugural event just two years ago. From a turnout of 25,000 in 2012 and 55,000 in 2013, it’s only fair that we give them all the bragging rights in the world as Livescape Asia has confirmed that they’re expecting a crowd of 85,000 for FMFA 2014! We took a step back from all that hype when we sat down with Livescape co-founder and director Iqbal Ameer as he took FMFA 2014 apart for us (figuratively speaking, of course) and handed us the nitty-gritty details. CAMPUS+: You’re a big part of the FMFA production, right? How much does it cost to produce? IQBAL AMEER: The entire show costs RM50 million. About 60% of that goes to talent i.e. artiste fees. Then we’ve got about 15% that goes into marketing and the rest goes into production and site logistics. That should give you a good gauge of the breakdown – most of the money go to the talents.

WE GO THROUGH SO MUCH EFFORT TO ENSURE THAT PEOPLE GET A GOOD SHOW – FANS OR TICKET BUYERS SHOULD BE THERE TO SUPPORT US IN WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO ACHIEVE. I REALLY WISH THEY KNEW HOW MUCH WE GO THROUGH

C+: So, you’ve just announced the change in the FMFA venue. As we all know, Sepang International Circuit is a flat ground whereas Bukit Jalil Stadium is, well, Bukit Jalil Stadium. How’s that going to change FMFA in the planning sense? IA: A lot of people think that we’re doing it in Bukit Jalil Stadium but actually, we’re using the entire facilities of Bukit Jalil Stadium, meaning the outer grounds. Sepang International Circuit is flat but the site that we have now is bigger than that. We’ve looked at the site plan and it’s amazing – you’re going to go in there and go, “What?! This doesn’t look like Bukit Jalil Stadium at all!”. The reason why we moved is not because of us but because of the punters. We’d be more than happy to do it in Mines but when the ticket sales jumped and with the crowd expectancy of 85,000, it had to be done. C+: What are some of the processes that come into play when preparing for FMFA? IA: The first thing we need to do when we organise a festival is, we need to convince all these acts to play over the three days. It’s not like, “Eh bro, can play ah on the 13th of March?”. It doesn’t work that way! We have to lobby so that usually happens when Rahul and I travel. We go to Europe, we meet all the agents, we see who’s available and when we have this big chart to see when these acts are touring. Then we go back to our Facebook page and Twitter to see what kind of acts people like and from there we decide on the acts based on their schedules. Then, we speak to the respective agents and negotiate prices or deals and we pay them. That’s step one. Step two, while that is happening and as the line-up is growing organically, we have our sponsorship team going out and lobbying for sponsors. While that’s going on, we have our production team to find venues, specifications, do we have the equipment that the talents need in this country? If not, where is it coming from? Is

it coming from UK? Singapore? China? How much is that going to cost us? While that’s going on, we have our marketing team which goes, “Okay, these are the number of acts that we have, so how are the billing orders going to work? Can we get press? Can we get artistes to agree to press?”. Everything happens simultaneously and it takes about six months. C+: How is working on FMFA different from working on the other events that Livescape Asia has done in the past? IA: One thing that we strive very proudly on doing is, we always try to match production standards apple to apple. The show that you see here in KL, we always say that if you were to go to Europe and see the same show, it’d be the same. So, production standards are very high to ensure that people here would experience the same here as they would elsewhere. Secondly, would be crowd flow. A lot of people attend FMFA and that means our bars need to be stocked right, we work very closely with the police and security teams to make sure that people are safe. Ample parking is important too because Malaysians love to drive! We have an entire separate team that dedicates themselves to parking sites. C+: What could possibly go wrong on show day? IA: We’re very confident about our production standards but one of our biggest fears is the stage collapsing or catching on fire. We take a lot of necessary precautions to ensure that that doesn’t happen but yes, that’s one of our biggest fears because if that happens, we have no show. The safety of the patrons would be number two on my list i.e. proper medical response teams to make sure that people are fine and that they don’t get dehydrated. We always tell people to be smart because if they do something stupid, we become liable for it and we might not have another FMFA. We have to answer to the authorities. Another thing that worries me is whether the artistes have arrived or not because without them, there’s no show either! We’ve had an experience before where an artiste didn’t show up because he/she took the next flight and didn’t tell us. We also had another artiste who was on a plane that detoured to Penang and our team had to drive up to Penang to drive him back down to KL for the show. C+: Yes and when they don’t turn up, the punters aren’t going to be happy! IA: Exactly. That’s one thing though. You know, I wish people really knew how much work goes into pulling off a show like FMFA and the thing is, we don’t even know if we’ll make money out of it or not. We go through so much effort to ensure that people get a good show – fans or ticket buyers should be there to support us in what we’re trying to achieve. THE LOWDOWN ON THE “ME, ME, ME!” GENERATION

hile there has been so much negativity given to the generation and its shortcomings, we’re now taking a look at your average Gen Y misconceptions and stereotyping. Are they really as lazy as they come? Is Gen Y “good for nothing” because they’re entitled and spoilt? How much of what the media says are myths and how much are realities?

Gen Y Is Lazy They say that the Gen Y group are always the first to leave and last to put up their hand when asked to volunteer for extra work – and that’s just the workplace alone. The media have also proclaimed that Gen Y is a selfish generation that’s too engrossed in their digital culture to understand the importance of hard work or doing things without “shortcuts”. They forgot the fact that Gen Y is the generation that has mastered the world’s most rapidly evolving set of tools i.e. technology. They utilise their knowledge to decrease production time, increase efficiency and most importantly, get

the job done while improving on the working environment. Yes, even if it means that they spend quite a bit of time on their gadgets.

Gen Y Have Unreasonably High Expectations This much is true because this generation wants success and believes that anything is possible so long as they work hard enough for it. Gen Y are known to have high expectations of themselves. Call it bright-eyed, call it hopeful, call it naïve – their high expectations of themselves can be a huge challenge for their careers or employers. Gen Y is also known to be disheartened easily and the first sign of failure might set them back by miles. However, do remember that they desire success. Maybe they’ve followed Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg’s story too closely and think that they too can change the world if they tried hard enough. Even Zuckerberg had to overcome obstacles on his own. Perhaps Gen Y forgets that failure is one of the many steps to success?

Gen Y Is Disloyal Because they have such high expectations of themselves and for their future, they can often come across as disloyal. Gen Y are loyal but not blindly so, for they believe in loyalty with reason and they had better be good reasons. They’re constantly looking to expand on their strengths and develop their skills and if a superior isn’t giving them room to do so, they rebel, or worse, start heading for the door. The problem is, good opportunities are far and few in between out there, so they should hold on to what they have right now and just be patient

instead of portraying disloyalty.

Gen Y Is Self-Centred We say this is the biggest myth of all because Gen Y aren’t the only self-centred beings around. At this point, it’s important to remember that Gen Y has been given a gift of entitlement e.g. “I deserve this!” and “I deserve that!” . It’s a somewhat damaging gift. Having said that, you’ll find that Gen Y’s self-centredness is actually defendable. For example, they may seem a tad narcissistic to create LinkedIn profiles (very important, by the way!) to show off their skills or have personal websites to archive their work/projects, but if they don’t, they’ll be at a great disadvantage over their peers. So, it does help to be a little, Me, me, me! – but just a little.

Gen Y Thrives On Constant Appraisal & Feedback Maybe their unreasonably high expectations of themselves and the bouts of narcissism have contributed to this but then again, Gen Y constantly seeks for improvements. When they want to know how they’re doing, they seek onthe-spot, real-time feedback because to them, it’s an efficient way of identifying their areas for improvement and development. With Gen Y, it’s not merely about success, but recognition is important too, for all the work that they put out. So come to think of it, who doesn’t want recognition for good work? We know we do! On another note, who or what made Gen Y the way they are though? Hmm. Something to think about.

Cosplay is basically Asian in origin (Japan, to be exact), but for the past decade or so, it has been making headlines all over the West. This means that cosplay culture has gone beyond just Japanese animation as it has forayed into the Western entertainment industry. Now, parading around in popular anime characters are cosplayers dressed up as superheroes from Marvel Comics, DC Comics, as well as movie villains and game characters. You might think that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about acting, moving and posing like the characters but in fact, the most important ingredient in successful cosplaying is the costume! 48

ure, there are costume stores in and around the city where people can go and rent cosplay gear to complete their character’s look. However, true cosplayers take it all in their own hands and spend more time and effort than you can ever imagine on perfecting their own costumes and bringing their characters to life. We cornered to a few popular Malaysian cosplayers and got them talking about getting down with their own costume-making. First, we asked Outpost Productions prop-maker Jonathan Goon a.k.a Dei on how he makes his ‘character decision’ and he revealed, “I normally choose characters that fit my body type and are within my skill range of costume making. I challenge myself every so often in new costume builds so that I can increase my skills in different areas of crafting. My usual prep for a new costume is to research and collect as many reference pictures of the costume as possible. Then I start saving money for materials, which normally involves preparing a budget and also, a schedule to get the costume completed. Then it’s onto the actual making of the costume!” 30-year-old Thomas Kuan, an ex-cosplayer who went by the name Hexlord said, “Usually, most cosplayers go with the characters they love or how well they can portray a character. After which, preparation begins! Preparation may involve extensive online research, viewing of the material e.g. books, manga, anime, repeated watching of the movie as well as the gathering of materials needed to make the costume. In terms of character portrayal and the recreation of the scenes, props can make or break the whole thing. Some time is needed in order to start making or modifying the costume. As for the source of materials, well, it may be anywhere! It’s all up to one’s creativity”. Graphic designer Kuro Dai, on the other hand, said, “It’s more than meets the eye. We role play the characters we know and love and we interact with other cosplayers and fans as the characters we portray. Fans of the characters or the series should be able to recognise us instantly! There are intensive preparations to be made months before, such as deciding on which character to cosplay, the location of the event or the location for a photo shoot and so on. There are a lot of planning, decision and strategies involved in pulling off a really good cosplay”. “I keep physically fit through sports and a good diet and trying out different poses for the characters I cosplay. Materials come from fabric shops and if there are materials which are hard to find, I’d look online. Inspirations come from many sources - usually when I read, watch or play a particular series or game, ideas would come. We search for materials based on how the costume is designed and how it would react to the environment”, he added. Hani Suraya aka Miyavi Honey, has been cosplaying for eight years now and she, too, gives her two cents on the art behind cosplay costume-making. “It’s about how you express your creativity by either sewing, makeup, wigstyling or prop-making and the effort you make to bring your favourite character to life. There are characters that I really

like but I won’t cosplay them because I know my limitations and I cannot pull off such character i.e. I may be able to cosplay a tall character because even though I’m short, I can wear platform shoes but I can’t cosplay a bulky macho character because I can’t fake the illusion”, she confessed. “I do in-depth research on the details for the costume and the correct poses to roleplay. I usually get cloth from local stores like Nagoya and Kamdar because it’s much cheaper. Sometimes, I order materials e.g. PVC, lycra or vinyl online because they’re not sold in Malaysia. I mostly sew my costumes myself but if I’m too busy, I commission tailors to make them”, she said. Last but not least, we spoke to Mohamad Siratul Akma, otherwise known as his cosplay name, Fritz. Fritz started off as a cosplayer in 2003 and stopped in 2006 to focus on his work. He still attends cosplay events but as a photographer. We asked him about some of the outstanding qualities that he usually looks out for when he’s on the job, which is photographing cosplayers. This is what he had to say: “To me, cosplay is not just about wearing the costume. Here are some key points that are usually taken into consideration before deciding on a costume: 1. Research, research, research! Read up on a favourite character or watch the series/movie in which the character appears, over and over again. 2. A character should fit a cosplayer’s body type and should also suit him or her. At the end of the day, one would want to be comfortable in a costume, role playing the chosen character. 3. Props are important from costumes to wigs to coloured contact lenses and even fake weaponry (if needed). Besides, what would Catwoman be without her mask? Exactly. 4. Material for a costume can be found everywhere e.g. haberdashery, online stores, workshops or hardware stores. It’s what one does with the material that counts. Creativity is what matters. 5. Last but not least, one will have to practise and ace the facial expressions and body language of the chosen character well. If you’re going to cosplay, it’s best you go all the way!

KIT O UT YOUR Frying Pan It doesn’t matter if you go Asian or Western in your menu, a frying pan is important to have in any kitchen. It’s brilliant for speedy dishes like omelettes and pancakes or for stir-frying vegetables or even for frying up your nuggets or sausages. A standard pan should see you through your college/university years. If you’re planning to splurge, go for a good, non-stick frying pan to avoid using extra oil. Also, if you buy a reasonably-sized pan, you can use it in place of a wok.

Cooking Utensils There are many kinds of cooking utensils such as ladles, turners, spatulas, etc. Unless you intend to use a spoon or fork to cook, invest in a few of these kitchen helpers. Spatulas are handy to lift and flip food items during cooking, such as fillets, eggs and pancakes. Ladles can be used to stir and serve soups, curries, gravies, etc. Turners are useful when cooking foods like omelettes and fish. Get heat resistant silicone ones that won’t scratch the bottom of non-stick pans.

Rice Cooker Let’s face it – we’re Asians and most of us just have to have our rice! A standard electric rice cooker is designed to bring rice to a boil, senses when it needs to be reduced to a simmer, and then lower the heat again to keep rice at serving temperature without overcooking it. Guess what though? We’ve found that there are many ways to make full use of your rice cooker e.g. for making soups, steaming, baking, etc. Trust us, there are quick and easy recipes for ‘rice cooker cheats’ available online. Invest in a rice cooker if you don’t have one yet!

Right up there with the rest of the important kitchen tools is the chopping or cutting board. You’ll need one for chopping up all the ingredients for your yummy dishes. Choose a plastic one which leaves no cuts for germs to breed in and can be washed or wiped clean. You may want to get separate ones for cutting foods to be eaten raw and foods that need to be cooked, such as meat, fish, chicken and so on.

A small saucepan is great for boiling eggs or making some yummy soups. It will also come in handy if you want to whip up instant noodles in the middle of the night. If you want something that can do more, then you might want a bigger saucepan or a cooking pot. These will even allow you to make stews or sauces for your pastas. You can also start calling home for recipes and start making them on your own!

You’ll always need the basic cutting and eating utensils, of course. A small fruit knife makes cutting or slicing fruit or fine vegetables easy (bring on the salads!) and one good large knife to chop meat will make a world of difference to your cooking experience. Best if you head out to your nearest supermarket to buy a knife set that usually consists of four knives or more in its own holder. As for spoons and forks, well, toss out all your chipped plastic ones and invest in a set of decent cutlery. They’ll make mealtimes more pleasurable too! A complete set will usually consist of a few tablespoons, teaspoons, forks and dinner knives each.

Condiments Though technically not kitchen tools, condiments are just as important and it’s wise to have all the spices and sauces you need on standby before embarking on your cooking adventures! Salt is needed for just about any dish - soups, fried rice, dressings or even dipping sauces. Because we’re Asians, you might probably want to grab a bottle of soy sauce the next time you go grocery shopping. Bottles of tomato and chili sauces will also come in handy as and when you decide to whip up something Western. Finally, don’t forget other condiments such as sugar, pepper, fish sauce, oyster sauce and those indispensable chicken, beef or anchovy cubes! Now that you’ve got all that sorted out, you just need to work out what to cook!

There are people who upload videos to YouTube and people who seem like they were born to be YouTube stars.

e say this because not everyone can turn heads with an ordinary, webcam-made video. While YouTube has turned into a great platform for budding musicians, singer-songwriters, directors, actors and actresses to put themselves out there, it has also become very overpopulated. Hence, it takes real talent and perhaps a lot of guts to stand out amongst the rest. That’s not to say that the probability of grabbing the world’s attention is slim to none. In fact, we have our very own network of extremely talented Malaysians who have put us on the map e.g. JinnyboyTV, Dan Khoo Productions, Zee Avi, etc. More recently, we’ve spotted another rising talent that could very well propel the independent Malaysian creative scene to greater heights. That having said, if you haven’t heard of the name Elizabeth Tan, well, then you haven’t been listening to the radio or getting on the internet much. Allow us!

Elizabeth Tan a.k.a Elizabeth Swan is a 20-yearold student who was studying in Dallas, Texas for two years before coming home to the warm welcome of Malaysians who have discovered her via YouTube. “I started my YouTube channel because I wanted to give vlogging (video-logging) a go. I’ve since deleted all my vlogs though because they were so painful to watch!”, she confessed. Well, maybe she didn’t have it in her to someday become a TV personality but she certainly could dish it out where it matters armed with a beautiful voice and a guitar! Of course, compared to the likes of Zee Avi, JinnyboyTV and Dan Khoo Productions, she’s still very much a newbie but her talent is that of a seasoned singer-songwriter. This was evident in her cover of Joe Flizzow’s ‘Havoc’. According to Elizabeth, at that time, she was looking for a Malay song to sing and her friend suggested for her to ‘Havoc’. “I went home and thought about it because at that time, the song had already been on air for quite some time. I picked out four chords, tried it, recorded it and uploaded it”, she said.

The cover only took two hours to complete but shortly after, it began to gain traction and before she knew it, she was invited to sing live on Fly FM. To her surprise, her session included an exclusive live performance with Joe Flizzow himself. For someone who hasn’t done a lot of gigs and only has her YouTube channel as her portfolio, we say damn girl, you’re going places!

Some hardcore Linkin Park fans might think that Recharged lacks a certain trademark punch but think about it – how many innovative, pioneering artistes can put out similar sounding albums over and over again and still continue to impress? Yeah, peeps. None other than Linkin Park!

There’s always something alluring about their edgy style, perhaps due to their representation of rebellion, freedom and angst. Their new seven-song EP kicks off with the anthem-like Ordinary Life, which tells of the band’s disdain for the nine-to-five, chained-to-the-desk lifestyle. This is followed by the heavy electronic-ridden Outta My System which any heartbroken youngster can easily relate to. We’re also digging In, mostly because it blends thick guitar picking with a constant piano backing which takes one on a journey. This EP might not be for everyone, but it’s undeniable that Simple Plan still has what it takes to pop-rock it out!

ince then, she has been hard at working hitting clubs and livening up residencies at some of Australia’s most outstanding venues. Her impressive talent and boundless energy allowed her to clock up a huge achievement recently, when she was handpicked to support superstar DJ Tiësto on his Asian tour. Having seen her play at the Malaysian leg of DJ Tiësto’s tour, we got chatty with her over the phone when she gave us a call from Miami. You could say that we were super excited to hear from the hottie!

CAMPUS+: Are we to understand that you were previously working in retail? At which point did you know that this was what you wanted to do? TIGERLILY: Yeah! I used to work at an environmentally-friendly childrens’ toyshop actually. That sounds really weird and boring, but they sold some crazy wooden childrens’ toys. As for your second question, it was when I started clubbing, which was at the age of 18. I fell in love with dance music and my eyes were opened up to a whole array of new career paths that were available for me and one of those was DJing. I loved the idea of it because I could play music, perform, travel and meet people. I knew then, that this was exactly what I wanted to do! C+: What are your thoughts on dance music being almost immediately linked to drugs? How can you as a DJ/producer change that? T: I don’t think that there’s any way to change the behaviour of people in the crowd. All you can do is educate them through enforcement of rules by the police force or through festival rules. Educating people beforehand about the risks involved and what they’re getting themselves into, is the best way to go about it. A lot of artistes are really proactive about promoting clean events and promoting the ‘sober is better’ campaign. C+: You’ve opened for Avicii, Tommy Trash, and most recently, DJ Tiësto in Malaysia. What has been some of your most memorable moments so far? T: The tour with DJ Tiësto was probably the most memorable in regards to shows. We were playing for crowds of up to nearly 30,000 people which was really amazing and it was a great experience to work with him. It was a lot

Some other really great moments for me were when I released my first track, Zombie, and also when I worked on some mix compilation CDs which were officially released under my own record label, Onelove. C+: The past year has been a little crazy for you. Is there anything in the pipeline for the year that you can talk about? T: I have some collaborations which will be released throughout the year. Also, my first EP, which will hopefully feature three or four originals on it, will be released by the end of the year!

JYP Entertainment’s new boy band GOT7 has finally debuted with their first mini-album, Got It?! Anticipation for the group has been high since some of the members were previously on reality TV show ‘WIN: Who is Next’. Formed with the global market in mind, GOT7 consists of JB and Jr. of ‘JJ Project’, Yu Gyeong, Young Jae and Mark from the US, Jackson from Hong Kong and BamBam from Thailand. This South Korean hip hop group’s specialty is martial arts tricking which they incorporate into their dance performances. Written and composed by Park Jin Young, the group’s debut single, Girls Girls Girls is a hip-hop number full of JYP-style swag, complete with a teasing of So Hee’s famous ‘omona’ expression. Other tracks on the mini-album include the R&B hip hop flavoured I Like You and the southern hip hop styled Follow.

The new subunit of idol girl group Rainbow is raising temperatures in the South Korean music industry and it isn’t hard to see why! Rainbow BLAXX (formed by members Jae Kyung, Hyun Young, Seung Ah and Woo Ri) portrays a sexier and more elegant image than the original group, judging from the release of their special album, RB BLAXX. We love the staccato style title song, ChaCha, a retro disco dance number that will make you want to get up and dance. This is followed by the slightly more poetic Silhouette, a lush and full ballad which has left us yearning for more. Overall, it’s a pretty strong mini-album for a new subunit but we find that it’s far too short. Can we have more from Rainbow Blaxx please?

Called Sarawak When visiting Sarawak, most tourists, both local and international, tend to limit their exploration within its capital, Kuching.

he truth is, Sarawak is home to many tourist attractions that span across hundreds of acres of vast wilderness. Located in the third largest island in the world, Borneo, Sarawak is a land of adventures waiting to be discovered. Filled with the friendliest people of different races, religions and cultures, this East Malaysian state is rich in many ways. When you visit Sarawak, be prepared to feel like a family member from the time you arrive till you leave. FAIRY CAVES Located about 50km from the capital, the Fairy Caves is a spot not to be missed while you’re in Sarawak. Locally known as ‘Gua Kapor’, the limestone caves were formed some 100 – 150

million years ago. It’s advisable to stock up on water and snacks as you won’t be running into vendors while you’re there. You will also need to bring a torchlight with you because there will be times when you’ll be climbing up stairs in total darkness. The Fairy Caves is named so because of a fairy statue in the cave where droplets of water from the caves’ roof drip onto its head. The water is believed to be holy water. There’s also a figure of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, said to have been mystically formed, on the rocks. If you’re claustrophobic, exploring the Fairy Caves will prove to be quite a feat but surely it’s not something to be regretted! The Fairy Caves area is also the venue for the annual ‘Rock On’ climbing festival in May which features climbing activities, lots of food, drinks and live music.

SARAWAK CULTURAL VILLAGE Known as a ‘living museum’, the Sarawak Cultural Village is a popular attraction just 35 minutes’ drive from Kuching. This unique village welcomes visitors to experience the local cultures not as tourists but as part of the family. Here, you can walk into authentic homes built by the local tribes (Orang Ulu, Bidayuh, Iban and Melanau) while the villagers go about their everyday activities. You can also learn their customs by participating in workshops such as those teaching beadworks, wood and bamboo carvings, pua weaving and straw weaving. By the end of your visit, you’ll probably also be able to throw a Malay spinning top or shoot a Penan blowpipe like a pro. Best if you can plan your trip in July as the Sarawak Cultural Village is also the venue for the famous annual Rainforest World Music Festival. MULU CAVES Deep in Sarawak’s Gunung Mulu National Park lies one of the largest, most spectacular limestone cave systems on Earth. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the caves are famous for a series of over 20 expeditions since

1978, now drawn together as the ‘Mulu Caves Project’. The caves were formed millennia ago and the complex network still remains largely unexplored. Visitors are not permitted to enter any of the caves within the Park without a Licensed Park Guide. The ‘star’ of the Mulu Caves is undoubtedly the ‘Deer Caves’ where one can watch the evening exodus of bats. A total of twelve species of bats are said to reside within the ‘Deer Caves’ and from the Bat Observatory, you may watch the famed nightly flight from the cave. There’s even a ‘Mulu Bat Cam’ which allows you to spy on millions of bats via a remotecontrolled, closed circuit TV system! KUCHING ESPLANADE Once a trading area in Kuching, the waterfront area at Sungai Sarawak has now been transformed into a beautifully landscaped esplanade. As a matter of fact, it’s hard to imagine that Kuching Esplanade was once a busy port full of warehouses and is the place where the first White Rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke, set foot in 1839. Clearly, the Kuching Esplanade has undergone considerable transformations, from a small settlement to the riverside walk it is today. It boasts food stalls, restaurants, entertainment facilities such as an

open air theatre and a musical fountain and is well equipped with seating. Fancy a stroll in the heart of Sarawak while the sun sets? Kuching Esplanade is the place to be! It’s no wonder that it has become the most popular meeting place for both locals and tourists. THE GREAT ORANGUTAN PROJECT Due to mass deforestation, logging, mining and forest fires, the habitat of the area’s orangutan is depleting and under constant threat. As a consequence, orangutan numbers are dwindling and the species is now endangered. The Great Orangutan Project at the Matang Wildlife Centre is a refuge for rescued orangutans, including those left injured or orphaned. Work at this centre is endless but it is somewhat blessed by the involvement of volunteers. If you have time to spare, you might want to consider signing up for the award-winning volunteer experience where you will get the chance to work behind the scenes at the centre, helping with enrichment, husbandry and construction work for the orangutans. The Country Cat Café sits snugly in a cosy and beautifully decorated pet store, The Country Pet Store. The store provides usual pet shop services such as grooming, spa and a hotel for pets. They house more than a dozen pure breed cats, including the iconic American Curl aptly named after its curled ears. There are also the fluffy Persians, a wild-looking Bengal, the spotted American Shorthair, an almost hairless Cornish Rex, a playful Siamese and an elegant Maine Coon. All the feline patrons at the café are well taken care of as the management maintains strict rulings and precautions to ensure their well-being. Patrons need to change into instore shoes and sanitise their hands before entering the café or handling any of the cats. Additionally, all the cats are vaccinated and regularly checked by a veterinarian. For those of you who love the company of cats but cannot keep one for whatever reason, or do not want to bear the responsibility of owning one, just head down to The Country Cat Café and hang out all day with some really cool cats!

Gillian Flynn is an American author and television critic for Entertainment Weekly. She has so far written three novels, Sharp Objects, for which she won the 2007 Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for the best thriller; Dark Places; and her best-selling third novel, Gone Girl. This book has received praises, including from authors such as Stephen King. The dark plot revolves around a serial killer in a Missouri town and a reporter who has returned from Chicago to cover the story and events that take place. Elements of dysfunctional families, violence and self-harm are raveled out within the story. The novel was shortlisted for the Mystery Writers of America Edgar for Best First Novel by an American Writer, Crime Writers’ Association Duncan Lawrie, CWA New Blood and Ian Fleming Steel Daggers, where it won the last two awards.

It’s the stone-age all over again

ver wondered what you would do if you were dropped on an island with nothing but pants (to retain your dignity) and a rock (to get you started with survival)? Well, play RUST and find out if you have what it takes to adapt and evolve into a master of your own domain. In RUST, you play as a lone wanderer whose only goal is to survive against whatever the island you’re left on can throw at you. These include local fauna such as wolves, harsh environments and zombies! Fail to light a campfire at night and the cold might kill you or stray into a radioactive hot spot and that will prove to be fatal as well.

However, the worst threat to your survival can be the meeting of another player in your world. Such an encounter could have three possible endings: You could try to kill each other and the victor gets to loot the defeated player of his belongings; work together to survive the natural elements; or you could just ignore each other and go on your own ways. Most things/foes in the game world will do its best to kill you and while epic multiplayer battles are rare, ambush murders are not. Nor are you particularly durable like conventional video game characters, for if someone puts a few bullets in you, you will die. What’s the best way to survive? Build a fort of course and build one as fast as you can, the moment you enter RUST’s harsh world! Even a simple four-wall hut will do to keep those pesky animals and hostile players at bay. As you gather more materials and gain knowledge (in the form of blueprints), you can forge guns and even armour to give you a needed edge on survival. Or, if you’re brave enough, go out there and be the bandit

you’ve always wanted to be. Prey on defenceless players or just hunt animals, for it’s all up to you on how you wish to play the game. Just remember that there’s always someone out there who’s better equipped and has survived longer than you have. RUST is still in its alpha stages so expect a few bugs and glitches here and there. However, it’s still a very engaging game and it’s loads of fun! It’s available on Steam for $19.99.

‘WHEN FORM BECOMES A FACTOR’

After forging a formidable reputation for itself in the global market with conventional notebooks and tablets, Lenovo has taken a leap forward into the Android division with the launch of two new tablets dubbed the Yoga Tablet 8 and Yoga Tablet 10.

Much like the preceding Yoga devices in Lenovo’s line-up, The Yoga tablet 10 features a multimode design for usage via different set-ups. The Chinese technology giant has been touting its Yoga tablets as the company’s biggest launch of the year, but can the combination of decent hardware and revamped design with sleek form factor be the turning point for Lenovo’s tablet segment? We reveal our findings in our review. New form factors in devices fascinate us, so we could not resist checking out Lenovo’s latest offering. Appearance-wise, the Yoga Tablet 10 is exceptionally sleek but departs from the norm as far as tablets go with its cylindrical end, reminiscent of a folded magazine, (quite like the Sony Tablet S). This cylindrical design makes the device comfortable to the grip and the auto-rotating screen means left-handers will not have problems when holding the tablet with their right hand. The tablet seems to owe its various modes to this cylindrical feature. A hinged stand takes the device from the ‘hold’ mode to a propped up position, allowing it to stand vertically on a surface to one’s preferred angle. The tablet can also stand tilted without the need for a separate case to hold it in place.

DISPLAY To put things in perspective, both the Yoga Tablet 8 and 10 sport 1280x800 resolutions, with a density of 188.7 and 149.5 pixels per inch, respectively. While this may be comfortably acceptable on the smaller 8-inch display, images and text appear somewhat blurry on the 10inch Yoga tablet.

PERFORMANCE With a 1.2GHz quad-core MT8215/8389 processor supplemented by 1GB of RAM, the Yoga Tablet falls behind compared to the big boys proving rather slow in everyday use. Intense racing games and the likes seem out of the question and it’s no speed demon at loading web pages either.

WRAP UP Lenovo’s Yoga Tablet has potential but it’s not quite there yet. It’s basically a slate with good hardware and a clever kickstand design that rides on the esteemed Yoga name. Lenovo must be relying too heavily on its branding, for unlike the Ultrabooks with their largely high-calibre specs, the Yoga tablet sports a disappointingly mediocre display, packs a sluggish processor and on the whole, delivers a bizarrely skinned version of the Android 4.2. A relatively budgetfriendly price-tag and spectacular battery life does add some value, but not quite enough to place a high recommendation on this device.

MAKE WAY FOR THE SEXY SPYDER

Just like its hard-topped cousin, the i8 Spyder is a seriously techfilled wagon. It’s classed as a hybrid because it has both electric and petrol propulsion. Promising up to 113mpg and 59g/km of CO, the i8 is almost as fast as a Porsche 911 and makes a Prius look like a gasguzzler. Lightness is a huge aspect of the i8’s success because the biggest enemy of electric/hybrids is battery weight. By using aluminium for the chassis and carbon fibre reinforced plastic for the body shell, it weighs a little less than 1,500kg – about the same as a Toyota Prius. The i8 is classified as a four-wheel drive with a 130bhp, 184lb-ft electric motor turning the front rims, while a 220bhp, 1.5-litre direct injection petrol engine/generator provides the shove to the rear end. So, although it’s only a 1.5, it will outgun a V8 M3! This car was unveiled with a pair of electric scooters parked beneath a transparent tailgate. Don’t expect them to be included in the sale price though! For us, the i8 Spyder proves that being environmentalfriendly doesn’t have to mean giving up style or speed. Bravo, Beemer!

fter two years, the Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning Games (Sukan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi SUKIPT) returned to break a staggering 98 records. This year’s event saw host Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) taking the overall champion title for the first time with a haul of 64 gold, 44 silver and 32 bronze medals! On top of that, UiTM’s long jumper, 19 -year -old Lukman Hakim and Taylor’s University swimmer Khoo Cai Lin, 25, were selected as the olahragawan (sportsman) and olahragawati (sportswoman) of the Games.

“To be honest, I really did not expect to win anything, let alone be awarded sportsman for this year’s SUKIPT. It was unexpected and I’m speechless indeed right now! You could say that I’m just as surprised as everyone else but I’m taking this as a motivation for me to do better. I’ll make Malaysia proud and put us on the map”, said the extremely pleased Lukman. Cai Lin has her own set of dreams. She said, “After this, I’m going to concentrate fully on my training regime. I did not train as thoroughly as I wished to due to my injury. I want to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Asian Games in South Korea.” Both received a medal, trophy and a holiday package to Bali, Indonesia from Second Education Minister Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh during the closing ceremony held at UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam. Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh said that SUKIPT was both a relevant and important competition to produce more talented athletes in the country. He also officially confirmed that all gold medal winners of SUKIPT would be eligible to apply for scholarships from the Education Ministry to a tune of a whopping RM1,500 a month!
