e’re going to let you in on a little secret – we can’t wait to get the month of May started! The whole team’s been keeping busy all April visiting your campuses for the BIC 1Malaysia Short Story Competition Roadshow and for this month we’ll be heading out to INTI UC, Nilai UC, IACT College, HELP UC, UCSI, Binary College and INTI Subang too. Updates on the exact dates can be found on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com /campusplus), so don’t forget to become a fan and get your friends to do the same! Be sure to check out our pictures and videos of the rest of the campuses we’ve been to and see if you spot any familiar faces as well. On the cover of this month’s issue is a 23 year old who’s rise to fame was nothing short of extraordinary – not only did Zee Avi knock our socks off during her concert, we were fortunate enough to sit down with the Youtube sensation turned all-round star which was a great experience too! Do check out our interview with the songbird in our cover story pages. We’ve done our best to jam-pack this issue with major movie goodies for you and the result is contest pages for Letters To Juliet, Karate Kid and Furry Vengeance to boot! Things are bound to get a little crazy this time of the year as most of our team are pretty big on sports, naturally we’re all looking forward to starting the MAPCU Football League sports calendar this month as well. Like we said, things are moving pretty quickly around here, we hope all of you out there have the good fortune to enjoy a few minutes of peace and comfort despite the hectic schedules , exams and due dates!

UCSI University Celebrates Earth Hour 2010
Disagree band
UCSI University commemorated Earth Hour in a big way for the second year running, in its efforts to educate and raise public awareness about environmental conservation. Dubbed as “The Pledge for Mother Earth”, the event featured hot-air balloon rides for the public and an open-air concert featuring bands like Disagree, An Honest Mistake, Eve and Halfway Kings! A global event, Earth Hour is observed by billions of people every year on the last weekend of March and to show solidarity, concert-goers released balloons into the sky with a personal pledge tied to each balloon to commit to an action that will reduce global warming on an everyday basis.

University Life
Robert Bong University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. A student proudly shows UCSI t. projec unity comm s her team’
UCSI University’s multi-purpose hall was abuzz with activity as 234 students showcased their projects complete with videos, pictures and colourful posters. These were not ordinary projects – but part of a subject called University Life! While most of the other subjects in college/university requires one to memorise formulas, understand history and work out calculations, this subject is a whole different ball game! In line with UCSI University’s tagline, “The University, The Experience”, students taking this subject are encouraged to experience university life through co-operation with classmates while cultivating creativity in their coursework and learning vital first year skills as university students. The subject, taken by all first year, first semester students at UCSI University, was introduced by the University’s Centre for Learning Excellence (CLE). Presently, students from four faculties have undertaken the subject and CLE plans to introduce the subject in stages to other faculties. UCSI University’s School of Music performs a medley of popular jazz songs during the University Life showcase.

Celebrity Mums It’s the month of May and you know what that means – Mother’s Day is around the corner! Hollywood mums have been creating quite the buzz lately with their fashion forward toddlers (all thanks to mum’s fabulous genes no doubt) while looking like a million bucks themselves. So we’ve decided to check out a few of the newest mums that have joined the celebrity mum clan!
Stunning beauty Jessica Alba is the epitome of a glowing Hollywood mum! Alba and daughter Honor Marie Warren make up the cutest fashionable mum and daughter pair we’ve seen. According to an interview with OK! Magazine, Alba didn’t even scream during her drug-free labour – she was all Zen and focused. Recent reports have stated that she’s also made a decision to hire a Hispanic studies professor to teach her and Honor Spanish!
Look who’s little girl is growing up so fast! Not only did one year old Nahla Ariela Aubry inherit the aesthetic advantages of her two parents, Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, she’s been getting a double dose of culture too – the little one speaks French! What’s also interesting to note is that Hot Mama Halle is one of the few celebrity mums who didn’t release pictures of her baby to the press. Nahla’s seen to be pretty comfortable in front of the camera now though and we can’t stop gawking at how adorable she is!
Jessica Alba and Honor Marie
Gisele Bundchen and Benjamin Brady
Brazilian stunner Gisele Bundchen and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady welcomed little baby boy Benjamin into the world recently! Not only is Gisele beautiful, famous and super successful, she’s one tough cookie! She said giving birth to her newborn son didn’t hurt at all! The supermodel who had a water birth on December 8 of last year at the Boston condo she shares with her husband Tom Brady didn’t use serious pain medication either saying, ““I wanted to be conscious and present for what was happening.”
Halle Berry and Nahla Ariela
Future head-turner Mason Dash Disick was born in Los Angeles to mum Kourtney Kardashian and long time boyfriend Scott Disick. Fans of Keeping Up With The Kardashians may realise that Mason’s middle name is the same as the Kardashian sisters store Dash! The eldest of the Kardashian sisters had this to say about her labor, “It was surprisingly easy and just an incredible experience. I always thought your first is supposed to be really hard, but it was easy.”
Kourtney Kardashian and Mason Dash
These tiny toddlers seem too angelic to be giving mum any headache just yet, so if you’ve been giving your mum a hard time lately – make up for it this Mother’s Day with something special! A one-on-one bonding session (be it a shopping trip or a sit-down dinner at a swanky place) should do the trick and we’re sure your mums haven’t been seeing you much lately except for when you zip past them getting in and out of the house *sheepish grin* Always remember this: “Youth fades, love droops, the leaves of friendship fall; a mother’s secret hope outlives them all.” 14

even as a person I can’t stay in one place for more than a certain time.. - Zee Avi
A
huge talent packed in a petite frame, YouTube sensation Zee Avi who used to post up videos on the site with the name KokoKaina has had a whirlwind rise to fame and as Campus Plus sat down with her at the Concorde Hotel, she was seen to be browsing through her iTunes playlist totally at ease. We’re super excited to have had the chance to sit down with this amazing artist so without further ado, enjoy the interview! Q: Why the Ukulele of all instruments? Zee: Why not the ukulele. It’s more portable, more appropriately sized for me and you know I was persuaded by a friend to buy it and I did. I remember when I got it I couldn’t put it down for a few weeks. Q: What were you like in university? Zee: A misfit, I hated everybody. I had pink highlights, I wore all black and black nails, not that much has changed actually *looks down at her all black outfit* but yeah that’s who I was in school. Q: You studied fashion in London, do you think you’d go back to it in the future? Zee: I was in London for four years and it was a love/hate thing but I loved it back you know. Looking back it was like a marriage. I really enjoyed it and I miss it a lot but I’ve just moved to New York so I’m just going to experience that for a little while and fall into that love/hate relationship with New York for now. Q: Who are some of your major music influences? Zee: Right now I’ve been listening to a lot of classic French pop, I like Tom Waits a lot, I listen to a lot of classical music, the most recent, current CD I’ve got is Grizzly Bear, they’re pretty cool, I like them a lot. Q: So will we be seeing some of their influences in the next album? Zee: *looks coy* Maybe. Q: If you could collaborate with anyone alive or dead, who would it be? Zee: Tom Waits 18
CAMPUSPLUS \\ MAY 2010
Q: Which one of your songs has the most meaning to you and why? Zee: I think Honey Bee. Maybe because it’s my only love song and it’s metaphorical. It’s about non-conformity, kinda dam-the-man, beat the system kinda song in a subtle way. It’s kinda punk rock, kinda. Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t singing? Zee: I probably would be studying creative writing and philosophy or teaching English somewhere I’ve never been before. Q: Is your success something you expected? Zee: No I didn’t expect it at all. Q: Tell us something most people don’t know about you, any quirky habits? Zee: I think I’m socially awkward *laughs* no scratch that in all honesty though I’m a bit of a recluse, I love my shell, my little sanctuary. Q: What do you do in your little sanctuary? Zee: Read. Q: What kind of books do you like reading? Zee: When I was 16, I don’t know if it was an appropriate age to start reading these kind of books but I read books like Kafka and Nietzsche. Now I know why I was such an angry teen, hmm. Q: Since you’ve mentioned that you’d like to visit places you haven’t been before, if you weren’t an artist do you think you’d be travelling a lot? Zee: Well yes, even as a person I can’t stay in one place for more than a certain time, I need a constant change of scenery – and a drastic one. Like moving from Los Angeles to New York is pretty drastic, because it’s so different from each other, the vibes are different and they’re opposite sides of the coast. Q: What do you miss about Malaysia the most? Zee: Food! The usual roti canai, nasi lemak oh and I had bihun goreng just now, it was awesome. And my mom’s cooking particularly. Q: Are you the only child in the family? Zee: I was for seventeen years, I have a seven year old brother now *smiles* Q: If you could trade places with anyone in the world for a day, who would it be and why? Zee: Rip Van Winkle, I want to sleep for a bit *laughs*
Q: When was the first time you heard a song of yours besides when you played the CD? Zee: I think it was in the Walmart commercial – it was on TV in the summer. It was kinda weird because I was cleaning my house and then it came on. Q: How did you feel about your song being featured in an episode of Private Practice? Zee: It was pretty cool because they used the whole song and all. I watched the scene that they played it in and it was cool. Q: What is the weirdest thing your fans have ever done for you? Zee: In Singapore, there were two fans who were at the airport at 7am to say bye. That to me was like “I wouldn’t even wake up for myself at that hour, what are you doing here?”but they were really really sweet girls. Q: The experiences you’re having now are they influencing what you’re writing or do you feed on the same kind of experiences as before? Zee: Definitely, because I feed on music and I listen to a lot of it and I watch a lot of movies too and I try to read as much as I can. And just being in different places, experiencing new things and meeting new people has definitely thought me how to have more depth in terms of how I think and how I see myself and how I project my art, so yes new music, movies, reading, meeting people and everything definitely has contributed to that. Q: Do you see ever yourself branching out into acting or clothes designing maybe? Zee: Are you kidding? I have constant brain farts when I’m trying to remember lines *laughs* As of now I’m pretty content with doing what I’m doing right now. I’ve got my heart set on this. Despite what some critics may say, we’ve got nothing but love for this girl with a voice as sweet as honey. Her success and song-writing ability so far is a mere preview of more great things to come! Personally – we can’t wait to see what she does on her next record, we’re pretty confident it’s gonna be genius though *grins* CAMPUSPLUS \\ MAY 2010

Lighter Side of Life
A Letter Unlike Any Other
Whoops! I
was in the restaurant yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to pass gas. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my gas with the beat of the music. After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me....
Dear Mom and Dad: It has now been three months since I left for college. I have been remiss in writing this and I am very sorry for my thoughtlessness in not having written before. I will bring you up to date now, but before you read on, please sit down. YOU ARE NOT TO READ ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU ARE SITTING DOWN, OKAY?
Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.
Chemistry
Well then, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull fracture and the concussion I got when I jumped out of the window of my dormitory when it caught fire shortly after my arrival are pretty well healed now. I only get those sick headaches once a day. Fortunately the fire in the dormitory and my jump were witnessed by an attendant at the gas station near the dorm, and he was the one who called the fire department and the ambulance. He also visited me at the hospital and since I had nowhere to live, because of the burned out dormitory, he was kind enough to invite me to share his apartment with him. It’s really a basement room, but it’s kind of cute. He is a very fine boy and we have fallen deeply in love and are planning to be married. We haven’t set the exact date yet, but it will be before my pregnancy begins to show. Yes Mother and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how much you are looking forward to being grrandparents and I know you will welcome the baby and give it the love, devotion and tender care you gave me when I was a child. The reason for the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has some minor infection which prevents us from passing our pre-marital blood tests and I carelessly caught it from him. This will soon clear up with the penicillin injections I am taking daily. I know you will welcome him into our family with open arms. He is kind and although not well educated, he is ambitious. Although he is of a different race and religion than ours, I know your oft expressed tolerance will not permit you to be bothered by the fact that his skin color is somewhat darker than ours. I am sure you will love him as I do. His family background is good too, for I am told that his father is an important gun-bearer in the village from which he came. Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell you that there was no dormitory fire, I did not have a concussion or a skull fracture. I was not in the hospital, I am not pregnant, I am not engaged. I do not have syphillis and there is no man (of any color) in my life. However, I am getting a ‘D’ in History and an ‘F’ in Science and I wanted you to see those marks in the proper perspective. Yours, Your Loving Daughter
Writing In The Dark Sylvia: Dad, can you write in the dark? Father: I think so. What do you want me to write? Sylvia: Your name on this report card.
The Power Of Observation A
professor teaching medicine at the university was tutoring a class on ‘Observation’. He took out a jar of yellow-colored liquid. “This,” he explained, “is urine. To be a doctor, you have to be observant to color, smell, sight, and taste.” After saying this, he dipped his finger into the jar and put it into his mouth. His class watched on in amazement, most, in disgust. But being the good students that they were, the jar was passed, and one by one, they dipped one finger into the jar and then put it into their mouth. After the last student was done, the lecturer shook his head. “If any of you had been observant, you would have noticed that I put my 2nd finger into the jar and my 3rd finger into my mouth.”

I am attracted to you Like an electron to a proton Together we form an ionic bond Though we are opposite charged ions I am drawn towards you Our love is unique as an orbital For only two electrons can fill this space As my love for you increases My energy level rises I am in this excited state Increasing the tendency to form a chemical bond I was an element It took you to make me a compound substance Falling in love with you is a chemical reaction Which cause my love for you to grow Ours is an exothermic love Each for giving off love not just absorbing it Sometimes you do something especially nice Which speeds up the chemical process Like a catalyst in my increasing love for you I realise we have our inhibition periods And sometimes I am selfish enough To be an endothermic reaction Only absorbing your love The feeling I have for you is so intense It cannot be measured in kilojoules Often I have to make a qualitative elementary analysis To understand and love you more But I don’t expect to know your empirical formula You are too complex a person for that When you are gone I am a noble gas An inert substance When I am without you The world seems still And I am at equilibrium
Super Dog!
man is walking home when he sees a dog buying meat for his owner. The man watches the dog when the butcher takes a little to much and growls and him until he gets the right amount. The man follows the dog and watches as the dog stands on two legs and helps an old lady across the street. Amazed the man follows the dog home and watches the dog ring the doorbell. When the owner comes to the door the owner takes the bags and tells the dog to stay in the front yard. Frustrated, the man goes up to the owner and yells “This dog is amazing! Created to to explore and celebrate the correlations and deeprooted connections between reggae and hip hop, we’re in serious like with ‘As We Enter’ and ‘Strong Will Continue’!

Cheryl Cole Stunning Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole hits us with debut solo album titled 3 Words! Going in the opposite direction of Girls Aloud’s recent work (which has more of ab electro feel to it) this album has a distinct R&B influence which must have been due to the production contributions of Will.i.am and Taio Cruz. If you liked the cover art – the picture was shot by renowned fashion photographer Nick Knight! Right now, we’ve got Fight For This Love (we can’t help if the beat is catchy) on replay and the music video’s not too shabby either *grins*
Pulse marks the ever gorgeous Toni Braxton’s debut on the Atlantic Records label! Collaborating with red-hot producers and songwriters including Frank E (Madonna, T.I., Plies, Flo Rida), Steve Mac (Leona Lewis, Il Divo), Lucas Secon (Britney Spears, The Pussycat Dolls), Harvey Mason & Oak (Chris Brown, Joe, Mario), Troy Taylor (Trey Songz, Kevin Lyttle), Dapo Torimiro (John Legend, David Archuletta, Brandy), and David Foster (Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion) all personally chosen by Braxton, we’re most excited about the track ‘Yesterday’ which features Trey Songz!
Night Train Keane
Born Tempo Sergio Mendes
A jack of all trades, Sergio Mendes outdoes himself once again with Born Tempo, a fresh and current effort from the internationally celebrated artist. Garnering support from the crème de la crème of Brazilian songwriters (including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Joao Donato, Carlinhos Brown, Jorge Benjor, Milton Nascimento and Moacir Santos), Born Tempo even features a song from Stevie Wonder, written especially for Mendes in 1977 (The Real Thing)! We like the new spin on some Brazilian classics plus we’re pretty sure you’ll be dancing to the tracks in no time!
Brother Boyzone
Keane changes the game with the release of Night Train via Cherrytree/Interscope Records. Despite the album containing only 8 tracks, early reviews have been positive for this British rock act – which is as good of a sign as any for a possible charttopper. What’s interesting to note is that Night Train features collaborations with rapper K’Naan, Japanese MC Tigarah and a rare lead vocal performance from Keane’s keyboard player Tim Rice-Oxley! With songs that were written out on the road during act’s “Perfect Symmetry” tour and recorded at various studios around the globe, we’re excited to see the guys in a different light.
Although their comeback effort came to a screeching halt with the passing of Stephen Gately, the remaining members of Boyzone were real troopers and we’re pleased they carried on and finished the album in tribute to Stephen. The heart wrenching single, Gave It All Away (written by Mika) which features some of the last vocals that Stephen ever recorded shouldn’t be missed. The album showcases a new direction taken by the group with a more mature sound and material that’s heavily driven by rockier pop. A must listen for any Boyzone fan!
