For Beauty?

hat’s up with the fashion industry’s obsession with thinness? Flip through any teen, fashion or entertainment magazine, browse through any clothing outlet, watch and observe any advertisement and we bet that you’d find most, if not all of them would feature images of girls or women who are impossibly skinny or waif-thin to the point of being emaciated. While you’re reading this, thousands of teenage girls (and guys too) are starving themselves or doing extreme things to attain what the fashion industry considers as the ‘ideal’ figure. Is the fashion industry entirely to blame? Is the mass media culpable? Or are the fashion designers and so-called trendsetters to blame? Regardless of whoever it is, the stark reality is that all of them have contributed towards fomenting a culture of unrealistic beauty, and have worked hard and hand-in-hand to peddle, nay, shove this concept of beauty down the masses’ throats. It’s no surprise that many models and many fashion-worshipping young girls have fallen foul of the industry’s tactics and culture. Eating disorders and its attendant risks to physical and mental health have taken a foothold amongst many, and this horrifying trend is spreading like wildfire among not just the models within the industry, but to the impressionable everyday Joes and Jane(s) of society as well. Second Edition Of Bosch’s ‘Innovation Around My Campus’ Challenge

Workshop By Curtin University The students of SMK Luar Bandar, a high school located 50 kilometres outside of Miri, are happy with the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / high school diploma teaching workshop conducted by four Curtin University Sarawak lecturers earlier in October. The group of lecturers provided the students the opportunity to be exposed to the modern teaching method in Curtin as one of many alternative ways of efficacious learning, by giving them interactive lectures on effective English public speaking, as well as the required skills for essay writing in both English and Malay. Giving out positive feedback, the majority of students were more than satisfied about the workshop, saying that it has been helpful in their preparations for the upcoming high school diploma examinations. The students, moreover, found the interactive teaching method interesting, and wished for similar workshops to be conducted in the future. While thanking the lecturers, SMK Luar Bandar’s principal Marcus Gau Lian agreed with the students, and requested that the lecturers conduct similar workshops in the future. He said that such a workshop has helped enhance the students’ understanding of their studies and improved their knowledge. The high school’s gratification was shown to Curtin University’s lecturers with a certificate of appreciation and a luncheon. The head of Language Studies and Humanities Department of Curtin University, Michelle Voon admits that the teaching experience is rather heart-warming. “We were warmly welcomed by the school’s staff,” Voon says, “the response from the students who packed the hall was very positive.”

KDU’s Version Of Ice

Bucket Challenge

KDU University College recently organised its own version of the famous Ice Bucket Challenge, intended to help the underprivileged orphans of Rumah Amal Suci Rohani. Inviting mostly the whole campus and young representatives of the orphanage, the participants managed to complete the challenge in full force, and the campaign received a good outpouring of donations. The fundraising method was successful as it provided the orphans with a fun but educational trip to Legoland and Waterworld during their school holidays. KDU’s students of Event Planning and Management, Event Campaign Management, and Event Operation and Corporate Social Responsibility teamed up to recreate the activity, inspired by the popular fundraising activity ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral worldwide this year. On the other side of the event ground, KDU’s students of Hospitality, Tourism, and Culinary Arts participated in supporting the fundraising by organising a food carnival that offered a wide selection of food. The Ice Bucket Challenge, that wholly inspired the event went viral this year after Pete Frates, a former college Bostonian athlete was diagnosed with ALS in the same year. As a means of raising funds for people who suffer from ALS and for medical research purposes, Frates posts the challenge online, and gets most of people around the world, even celebrities to do the same. 8

Bosch’s second instalment of its ‘Innovation Around My Campus’ contest, geared towards fostering a greater appreciation for innovation and creativity amongst young Malaysians will take place from September 24 to November 28, 2014. This time around, the competition has been extended across five universities – Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), KDU University College, Help University and Universiti Malaya (UM). At which students from any faculty are invited to participate in the challenge that requires them to develop practical and usable innovations for their campuses. “Following the success of our ‘Innovation Around My Campus’ last year, Bosch decided that it was time to spread the spirit of innovation even further. We eagerly anticipate the creative ideas Malaysia’s young talent will develop, and look forward to working with the winning team to bring that innovation to life,” said Mr Martin Hayes, president of Bosch Southeast Asia and managing director of Bosch Malaysia. Participants need to submit a video presentation on how their idea can enhance student efficiency around their campuses. Five teams will then be shortlisted to present their ideas to a panel of judges from Bosch in the final round. The top three teams will receive cash prizes of RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively, as well as the opportunity for an internship with Bosch in Malaysia. UCSI Signs MoU With Nguyen Tat Thanh

UCSI University signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vietnam’s Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU), outlining the sharing of educational opportunities for programs identified by both parties. UCSI Vice Chancellor and President Dr. Khalid Yusoff stressed on the importance of mobility in the current generation, and that the institution focuses on obtaining international accreditation and recognition beneficial for both institutions’ students to achieve that. NTTU Vice President Professor Vuong Thanh Son said that the MoU will help strengthen the names and reputations for both universities, on top of giving UCSI what Dr. Yusoff has pointed out. He also mentioned that NTTU was greatly interested in its Malaysian counterpart’s methods of learning and industry relevance. Citing a tracer study by the Malaysian Education Ministry that ranks UCSI’s graduate employability as one of the best in private universities, Professor Son said, “NTU has chosen to collaborate with UCSI due to its emphasis on applicable education and success in graduate employability.” Other than those mentioned, the collaboration included curriculum guidance, academic provision, and professional developments by UCSI. That includes research activities, staff exchanges, as well as business and information technology training programs at the undergraduates and postgraduates levels.

Sunway University Appreciates Teachers

Sunway University celebrated Teaching Appreciation Day in an event called “Our Passion, The Future”, whereby the institution gave out four awards to the institution’s teachers in appreciation of their dedication and contributions towards the university. “Teaching is more than just a job or a profession, it is a calling,” Senior Executive Directory of Sunway University and Sunway Education Group Dr. Elizabeth Lee said. She adds, “And I would say it is a very noble calling indeed.” Dr. Lee then enthused that teachers are the major moulders of the nation’s future and shaping the nation’s graduates, and they have a great responsibility over the country’s asset – the youths. Sunway University handed out the first Award of Excellence in Teaching (AET) to one of the lecturers who had been in the tertiary education institution for 17 years, Santhi Suppiah, who is currently teaching the Australian Matriculation Programme, Foundation in Arts, and Monash University Foundation Year Programme. Not only does she have a packed schedule, Santhi Suppiah received the award for being able to take extra responsibilities for her role as the student mentor for the Australian college-like program. Sunway College and Sunway University grants the AET annually to teachers who have demonstrated excellence in teaching attitudes, as well as their contribution in teaching quality enhancement and student learning of both institutions. 10

Students From Four Japanese Universities Pleased With

UTAR Perak’s English Program Students from four Japanese universities visited University of Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Perak for a two-week English Immersion Programme which took place between August to mid September, and were very pleased with the outcome. The program, hosted by UTAR Centre for Extension Education, primarily taught these students on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English, and exposed the students to fun but stimulating activities – cultural performances and short visits to Cameron Highlands, Ipoh, Kuala Kangsar, Pangkor, as well as to the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. The Japanese students, who came from Josai International University, Kwansei Gakuin University, Toyama University, and Josai University admitted that the program was very helpful in advancing their English proficiency. A Toyama chemistry undergraduate Arata Sodeno admitted that he was shy to hold a conversation in English before coming to UTAR, “However, the English Immersion Programme has boosted my proficiency and confidence in using the language. I want to thank UTAR lecturers and helpers for being so patient in guiding me through this enriching learning curve.” Agreeing to Sodeno’s remark, a Josai University’s postgraduate student Ayumi Kikuchi cited her supervisor’s encouragement to participate in the English program, “They said that this programme has helped to improve their command of English. I am glad that this programme also exposed me to the multicultural elements in Malaysia.” Kwansei Gakuin University students, moreover, got to debut a ten-day study trip, where they were introduced to Malaysian lifestyle and communities. They were the first from UTAR’s Japanese counterparts to have participated in such an activity. They got the chance to visit Jeram New Village in Kampar, TEKUN National Office in Ipoh, GIATMARA Training Centre in Kampung Gajah, Farmer’s Organisation Authority Office in Langkap, a charcoal factory in Taiping and Murata Electronics’ office in Batu Gajah. UTAR Perak Campus has been organising the English Immersion Programme since 2012 and has since attracted numerous participants from a number of its Japanese counterparts.

The ONE Academy hosted FICTIONARY, a visual art exhibition that displays the art of imagination, featuring sci-fi and fantasies, while at the same time, showing a carefully composed space for art appreciation and discussion early in October. The nine Malaysian emerging concept artists, who have mostly graduated from The ONE Academy, held the art exhibition to show and educate art enthusiasts on original concept artworks of most animations. The exhibition displayed the unique depiction of each character, including monsters and robots. Carrying different themes and names, FICTIONARY labelled one of the collections as ‘Fantastic Realism’, which showcased the combination of imaginative fictional ideas and visionary images of these artists – the first illustration of the creation of animation. These artists, moreover, named another collection as ‘The Concept Art’, which displayed and showed the discipline in the world of art and designs. They named the collection as such due to the main concentration of the presentation of animations, movies, and video games ideas – the initial concept of animation. Not only did it show these artists’ works, the exhibition displayed the ways in which digital technology advancement have supported many developments in the animation world currently. One of the nine artists, Rayden Chen, conducted a live digital painting demonstration as a means to show art enthusiasts how technology has helped in enhancing artworks over the years. A notable artist that was invited was Skan Srisuwan, whose artwork FICTIONARY was featured as a special appearance.

Ten Public And Private Universities Join Shell FuelSave

80% of Malaysian students who completed the Pearson Edexcel A Level and International Advanced Level (IAL) examinations this year would go abroad for their tertiary education at the world’s top 50 global universities, as announced by the world’s largest learning corporation, Pearson today. These students added up the total numbers of students studying overseas that skyrocketed from more than 50,000 in 2009 to more than 70,000 in the following year. Pearson Senior Country Manager Siva Prakash said that 99% of Malaysian students who finished the Pearson examinations mentioned have successfully entered tertiary education, by entering the first year of university internationally and domestically this year. “80% of these students go on to study at the world’s top 50 universities,” Prakash continued. Among the top colleges included Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, London School of Economics, University of California, Berkeley, Imperial College London, University College London, King’s College London and University of Melbourne, entering for the academic year 2014/15 intake. The Head of Pearson’s Partner Market Asia, Steven McGill says that the company was very proud with the students’ achievement, and for their capability to meet the global education’s standard. “To be successful personally and professionally, students must become a “global citizen” skilled at interacting with people from other countries and cultures, and capable of analysing and addressing issues from a global perspective,” McGill added.

Monash University, Tunku Abdul Rahman University, Help University, UCSI University, Sunway University, IACT College, Taylor’s University, Universiti Putra Malaysia, National University of Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) participated in the fourth instalment of the Shell FuelSave College Competition, as announced by Shell Malaysia early in October. The competition required the student participants to pitch and execute a marketing and communications campaign, while at the same time educating Malaysian youths to drive smartly in terms of fuel efficiency. Moreover, it provided the students with a first-hand experience of the working world as well as exposure to the marketing and communications industries. Shell made it special this year by adding the #ShellPledge contest as an initiative where participants had to be creative in applying the methods they had initially came up with. Shell would crown the winning team of a university as the Shell FuelSave College Competition 2014 Champion. The winners will take home a trophy, a cash reward of RM15,000 and internship opportunities. During the fourth part of the competition’s launch, Shell Malaysia Managing Director Azman Ismail said that Shell Malaysia had the main aim to educate the younger generation of drivers on fuel efficiency and smarter driving, “[It is] helping to shape a more sustainable energy future. We believe that by introducing the #ShellPledge, we can successfully pass on the messages on smart driving habits that increase energy efficiency among the youth of Malaysia.”

Victoria University Business Club An Avenue To Improve Entrepreneurship Skills

Victoria University Business Club (VUBC) at Sunway University Kuala Lumpur hosted a fundraising for the underprivileged students from lower and/or middle income families in Victoria University, Melbourne. Being an entrepreneurship club in Sunway University and Victoria University’s twinning programme, the student-based organisation aimed to provide its members and Sunway University’s students in general leadership opportunities, entrepreneurship skills development, as well as active involvement in extra-curricular activities. The organisation’s aim resulted in them successfully raising RM7,500 in total through a three-day Philanthropy Bazaar held in March this year at the campus’ Energy Hub. VUBC’s President, Ong Lee Yan said that the fundraising had become one of the most unforgettable memories in the club’s history, “All of us stayed up late to decorate the venue. VUBC members have placed their greatest efforts into this event. [VUBC members in charge] coordinated the team well.” The club’s members set up stalls on Sunway University’s Energy Hub, as well as inviting students and other businesses to participate in the bazaar. Various stalls offered a variety of delectable food and drinks for sale, such as kebabs, fresh fruit juices and nitrogen ice cream from Nbrew. Even henna, temporary tattoo and manicure services were on sale.

Giving Back To The Community Over Convocation 50th Anniversary Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) did not only host a convocation ceremony, the institution gave back to the community through charity activities as well. Themed “USM Nadi Masyarakat” (USM, the society’s vein), the student-based committee formed for this event (who called themselves Secretariat ConvEx’14) gave away traditional porridge to residents around the USM campus, and hosted free food and beverages distributions to the Penang homeless. The latter turned out to be bigger as the committee involved volunteers, that made the food-giving even more exciting and successful.The charity events did not stop there. Secretariat ConvEx’14 organised bonding sessions and clean-ups in elderly homes, reading storybooks for the blind, and playing games with children in a children’s home. Secretariat ConvEx’14 said that they were amazed by the response and love that the children showed them in the Rumah Kasih Ceria children’s home, “We felt fulfilled as we did our part as students and made the children happy.” While marking the fiftieth year of (USM)’s graduation ceremony, the student-based committee organised Convocation Expo, nicknamed ConvEx’14, as a means of continuing the 14-year-old tradition it had been carrying. The committee included charity activities for the golden year of continuing the graduation ceremony tradition.

KDU College Penang Encourages Students To Join Competitions KDU College Penang encouraged its School of Hospitality, Tourism, and Culinary Arts students to participate in many competitions to improve their skills and prepare them for the real working world. Relating to the numbers of medals the school’s team earned this year, the Academic Department Head of the college’s hospitality school Cindy Loh displayed her pride on the winnings, and commented that competitions had become a platform for both students and staff to showcase their creativity, “[It] continually increase the standards of culinary excellence. Putting the students’ skills and knowledge to the test in a competition is good to broaden their insights and hone their skills. Outcome-based education and hands-on experiences are what we always emphasise at KDU Penang.” The culinary team had earned numerous medals in many international culinary competitions. Earlier in August this year, 24 culinary students and a supervisor competed in the Philippines Culinary Cup against experienced chefs from nine countries, and earned two silvers and seven bronze medals in the challenge. Samsung TECH Academy Samsung Malaysia Electronics (SME) Sdn Bhd cooperating with the Manpower Department under the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia launched Malaysia’s first Samsung TECH Academy at Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) Kuala Lumpur on 23 September 2014. This pioneer initiative in Malaysia provides specialised technical trainings as part of the overall vocational courses offered at ILP, in line with the Government’s target of producing more technical talent by 2020 – as outlined in the Manpower Strategic Plan 2016-2020. The Samsung TECH Academy will equip students with essential technical skills that enhance marketability and increase skilled job opportunities; particularly SPM leavers – allowing them to acquire a more practical experience-based qualification. It will also be providing technical and customer service training courses using Samsung technology. The academy, officiated by YB Dato’ Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem, Minister of Human Resources Malaysia, accompanied by YBhg Datuk Saripuddin Kasim, Secretary General of the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia, and Mr Lee Dong Yong, President of Samsung Malaysia Electronics offers a number of modules. Modules comprise a month-long training as part of the overall Certificate in Electronics Industry programme at ILP – providing students with 100 hours of specialised training in both technical theory and hands-on exposure on two Samsung product categories (Smart TVs and Smartphones). Upon completion of their overall vocational education, students will graduate with an SKM 3 Certification; a qualification that will garner increased skilled job opportunities within the electrical appliances industry as a whole. As of June 2014, 67 courses have been implemented across 34 Samsung TECH Academies in countries across the globe. Since its initiation in 2011, the initiative has benefited approximately 2,000 youths to date.

Collaborated For Charity Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn. Bhd. collaborated with one of Malaysia’s leading retailer, AEON for a fundraising and successfully earned RM23,428.60 for the Malaysian AEON Foundation. Canon PhotoMarathon Malaysia 2014:

A Way To Give Back To The Community Through Photography

Canon Malaysia took the Canon PhotoMarathon 2014 – a photography competition that required participants to capture images within allocated time frames – as a platform to give back to the community early in October. Drawing 1,000 photography enthusiasts to the competition this year, Canon managed to raise a large sum of money to be donated to charity houses. Canon Marketing President and CEO Wataru Noshioka highlighted that the PhotoMarathon was more than just a competition, it served as a platform for the photography-concentrated company to give back to the community, “Through the registration fees collected, Canon will donate to several charity homes in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.” Canon Malaysia’s Imaging Communication Products Director Donny Ling confirmed the CEO’s statement, “this year, a total of RM24,350 was collated from the registration fees for the event in KL, which will all go towards supporting the Shelter Home for Children and Montfort Boys Town.” The 2014 Canon PhotoMarathon participants had to follow last year’s competition format – capturing and submitting three themed photographs within a day. Heidi Klum And Seal Officially Divorced Supermodel mom Heidi Klum is now legally divorced from her former partner Seal, right after a Los Angeles judge approved their request and inserted the data into the system mid October. The duo said in a joint statement that despite the separation, both of the Hollywood stars will still put their children at the top of their priorities, “This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition… And for our children’s sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy.” Although Klum and Seal had separated for some time, the couple still remain friends ever since they filed for divorce in April two years ago. The English R&B singer had no problems with his ex-wife’s new relationship with art dealer Vito Schnabel, and even updates Klum about his trips and always tries to drop by whenever he was in town. The couple separated in February 2012 and officially filed for divorce two months later, citing irreconcilable differences and seeking physical custody of their three children. The German model and her singer ex-husband had been married for seven years, during which the supermodel adopted Seal’s surname of Samuel, but subsequently requested the court to restore it back to Klum. When asked about the divorce, Seal said that both of them did not expect the separation and that it shocked them, “You go into these things with the greatest intentions when you say ‘I do’ and you say ‘’Till death do us part.’ Those vows hold value. Young And Speedy Is Max Verstappen set to be new Mad Max? Even if not, he’d still be the youngest driver ever to compete at a Formula One weekend. Max is the son of former F1 racer Jos “The Boss” Verstappen, and looks set to become F1’s youngest full-time driver by almost two years when team Toro Rosso announced earlier that he would be driving for them next year. But he got an early debut behind the wheel in the opening Friday practice session at Japan’s Suzuka circuit in place of Jean-Eric Vergne, the very driver he is replacing in 2015. Having celebrated his birthday on 30th September, the 17-year-old has not had much time in an actual F1 car ahead of the Suzuka practice, though he did spend some time in parent team Red Bull’s simulator. He revealed, “Thus far, I’ve driven the simulator in the Red Bull Technology Centre twice. You basically spend the whole day, from morning till evening, driving… in preparation for free practice 1 at the Japanese Grand Prix. I have to say it’s a tricky track to master.” The practice debut made Verstappen the youngest ever driver to appear at a grand prix weekend at 17 years and three days of age, beating the record set by Sebastian Vettel for BMW Sauber in Turkey in 2006 at the age of 19 years and 53 days.

…And A Tragic End To The Japanese GP

The actual Japanese Grand Prix race was marred by two red flags, one at the beginning due to the heavy downpour from Typhoon Phanfone which delayed the start of the race. When the race actually started, it was behind the safety car. Then the second red flag was waved on Lap 44 of the race, when French driver Jules Bianchi aquaplaned at the same corner that Adrian Sutil crashed out of in the lap before that. Bianchi’s Marussia slammed into the recovery tractor that was in the midst of recovering Sutil’s Sauber. The 53-lap race was immediately redflagged and prematurely ended after Bianchi’s crash. Bianchi was immediately rushed to the nearest medical centre in an unconscious state, with later reports of him undergoing brain surgery and remaining in a stable yet critical state. Malaysian Gold Medal Winner Expelled What a crying shame. In the space of just 10 days, Malaysian wushu exponent Tai Cheau Xuen, 24, bagged the country’s first gold medal of the Incheon Asian Games only to be stripped of her accomplishment for failing a dope test. According to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Tai was tested positive for the banned stimulant sibutramine. Sibutramine is a widely used dietary supplement that falls under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of banned stimulants. “The competitor has been disqualified from the competition as well as these Games, and as such her accreditation cancelled and her medal withdrawn,” said OCA anti-doping chief, M. Jegathesan. He further added that a record 1,900 doping tests in total were carried out on the Asian Games athletes. Commenting on doping, he mentioned that there are three kinds of doping failures. First, there are the ‘hard core’ cheats who deliberately and intentionally take the ‘magic pill’ because they think it will help them to win. Then there are competitors who are pushed into doping by their coaches. And then you have the plain unlucky athletes who get caught through ‘ignorance’ just by taking medicines and diet treatments. Tai subsequently lost her appeal against the OCA’s decision when a special division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport set up at the Games in Incheon dismissed her appeal.

owever, you do not have to spend a bunch on cosmetologists to tackle the problem. What can you do? First, know your skin type, and second, eat right! It’s that simple. One important thing to keep in mind - every skin type needs a minimum eight glasses (two litres) of water every single day.

It is exactly what it sounds like. Your skin has that rough look, dull, and very small pores. Sorry to say, but you are more prone to wrinkles and fine lines compared to those with other skin types.

This is the trickiest skin type ever! It is prone to redness; itching, burning, dryness and acnes usually come with the package. But do not worry, with the right treatment and diet, you will be able to look as good as the others. First of all, you have to clean your face religiously, and gently, and when you are feeling clean, you can splurge on all the sashimi you want! Supplement that with an egg (or two!) for breakfast, topped with flaxseeds!

#2 The Oily-s When your fellow Dry-s lack moisture on their skins, you have too much of it! The silver lining is, you are not prone to fine lines when you reach a certain age. The excess oil will keep your skin moisturised, and reduces the possibility of being wrinkly early! Most of the food to avoid listed down here is probably in your favourite foods list. But do not worry, peeps! You do not have to avoid them completely, only reduce the amount consumed. 1. Fatty meats (this includes red meats and those steaks!), or what the French calls ‘those meat with saturated fats in it’. Some studies show that these are good for The Oily-s, but red meats definitely add up oil on your skin! 2. Dairy products (yes, milk and cheese, and milk-based produce). You, The Oily-s, have skin that is very acne-prone. Dairy can definitely aggravate acnes. You definitely do not want that. 3. Fried foods (this is out of the question, isn’t this?) You can start eating high-fibred food though! Not only is it good for your skin, but for your overall health too. Citrus fruits (oranges, lime and lemons) has the acid content that is able to wash away most oil in your system, so two oranges a day for breakfast it is! The other option is having oatmeal topped with berries and sprinkled with lemon zest as a healthy snack. These are all great for keeping the moisture of your skin within the normal range.

#5 The Combination

What to eat? Well, water! Most of us do not drink the amount of water our bodies need in a day – 8 glasses of them. But remember, the more water you drink, the more hydrated your skin will be. Attention to all you Dry-s and sashimi lovers! You can increase your daily fat intake by consuming polyunsaturated fatty acids (good fats). Where do you get good fats from? Salmon, of course! As a side dish, you can have oysters and other sorts of seafood. That is not all though, you can replace your usual vegetable oil with coconut oil for cooking. It’s not only better for your skin, it works wonders for your hair as well. When snack time comes, you can have fresh fruits and vegetables, for instance, melons and cucumber – these two are the best solid source of water. Also consider lettuce, beans, avocados, tomatoes, zucchinis, and various types of nuts. Another good snacking option would be oatmeal topped with your favourite choice of nuts and tiny cuts of melons and other fruits!

As you have guessed it, combination skin comprises the two most general skin types – oily and dry. You may have oily skin on the T-area, and dry on the other areas – or vice versa. It is annoying, but at least you have a little bit of everything!

In general, keep foods with high antioxidants in your list! Have some green tea during tea times with a couple of your favourite cookies and berries on the side will do! For lunch, you can have Chinese-style sautéed broccolis with garlic and some spinach like what Popeye eats! These are good for your skin maintenance. Now that you know that you can splurge while maintaining the health of your skin, your mealtimes are going to be twice as fun as it already is! Remember, do not entirely stop on one food, just reduce the intake amount of them so you get to kill two birds with one stone.

The Evolution of Men’s Hairstyle From Samson and Delilah to David Beckham, see the changes.

he tale of the couple inspires thousands of artists, sculptors, authors, and even music composers to create art pieces relating to the hairstyle. Men from that age normally wear their hairs short; however, those from different parts of the world wear their hairs differently. The ancient Egyptians, for instance, have their boys’ heads cleanly shaven and leave a small curl beside their heads, calling it The Lock of Youth – to symbolise their ages. Even so, it has progressively evolved from the days of antiquity, when modern hairstyles started to emerge and play a crucial role in men’s looks. Where the 1920s women kept their hair short and curly, the men kept their hairs, of course, shorter than the women did, and combed them slick backwards. Jump forward to the 1950s and you’ll find James Dean’s hairstyle en vogue, thanks to his movie, Rebel Without A Cause; followed by the beginning of the 1960s where Elvis Presley’s popularity skyrockets, and so does his Pompadour. John Lennon and the rest of The Beatles also stepped into the circle of popular hairstyles, boosting the fame of The Shag, in which people and their forever fans still follow up to now.

From then on, men’s hairstyles have evolved as rapidly as a leopard hunting for its prey. When hip-hop’s popularity rose in the 1980s-1990s, men everywhere followed all sorts of hairstyles popularised by the music genre, starting from Afro, Dreadlocks, and Cornrows. The trend even goes to the point where Mullets, (really, really high) Mohawks, Rat Tails, Spikes, and Bowl Cuts (yes, the Jim Carrey cut in Dumb and Dumber) became super popular. Oh, how we laugh at those hairstyles now, but probably would have sported them if we grew up in that era. Up to now, most men wear Faux Hawks and a Pompadour, just not as high as how Elvis wore it. The popular hairstyle for men now goes around the top with short sides. The beauty industry is a huge industry and its influence reaches far and wide, with every trend being copied and emulated, effecting a powerful impact on everyone from the man in the street to impressionable young college students.

aturally, this makes the highly competitive fashion industry one of the most controversial fields in business. Industry wide, the image of beauty is that of completely skinny (and in some extreme cases, malnourished) models, unrealistically high-priced products, and the obsession with staying forever young. Moreover, it puts pressure on the everyday Joe (and Jane) to achieve the unachievable, in an already distorted reality. From then on, they will validate all sorts of methods to reach the almost-impossible point, leading them to sickening realities, depression, and eventual deaths. Every industry, no matter its size, has its followers and fans. The fashion industry especially, has a substantially huge fan base that, unlike their models, keeps on growing bigger. The fan base largely consists of females, with increasing number of males making up the percentages. With the proliferation of the portrayal of Western beauty as being the standard to aspire to, the pressure spills over to us college students to go for extreme weight maintenance strategies.

In terms of fashion, students and youth in general need role models to look up to. Most college students look up to these models for fashion advice and for possessing the ‘perfect’ body shape. However, whether knowingly or unknowingly, the fashion industry passes on its disorders and negative viewpoints and practices on to its followers as well. According to Taylor’s University counsellor Marian Arumugam, students are becoming increasingly desperate to be in the “right” body shape and size. It’s not easy for these students to break free from this disorder, because it’s all being ingrained into their minds. She says, “It is a mental health disorder, as cognitively the individual is not well, and not thinking rationally about the need to look after oneself and maintaining a normal healthy balanced diet.” “Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny Does.” Remember this controversial line Kate Moss once proudly proclaimed? She said it as the trend of the fashion model champ of the 80s – toned women – went down the ladder, and was being replaced by skinny models, popularised by legendary British model Twiggy, and the 90s supermodel herself. Kate Moss was greatly backlashed for the statement, as it was seen as encouraging eating disorders among girls, mainly anorexia nervosa (food-consumption refusal) and bulimia nervosa (force-expulsion of food). Medical professionals describe eating disorders as psychologically abnormal eating habits, involving insufficient or excessive

food intake, causing detriment to one’s physical and mental health. Apart from anorexia and bulimia, binge eating (overeating), diabulimia (a diabetic person manipulating his/her insulin level for weight maintenance) and drunkorexia (one binges on alcoholic beverages to make them throw up the food consumed) are among the myriad of eating disorders afflicting today’s youths. Contemporary mass media has distorted the ideal portrayal of body shape as being skinny. From glossy magazines, to advertisements and films, we are constantly bombarded with altered visuals of body

shapes – with the so-called “perfection” that is of course, unattainable. Regardless of age, this is applicable to women and a small portion of men. Although Marian has no factual evidence, she confirms that girls are far more obsessed with their weight compared to boys. However, it is still applicable to both genders due to the media and peer pressure. Moreover, it guides the already superficial fashion industry to validate extreme measures of losing weight – cue bulimia and anorexia. Most female fashion models suffer from both, due to the size-zero outfit samples given by fashion houses to satisfy the distorted standards

of beauty and femininity. Going against this, Marian thinks that companies, fashion retailers and designers have to respond more appropriately by having models wear clothes that does not necessarily publicise its size. Modelling agencies have embarked on more extreme measures now, resorting to hanging outside eating disorder rehabilitation clinics to scout teenage girls just out of their treatments, especially those on wheelchairs. More revolting still, these agencies look to hire girls as young as 14 years old, because of the tiny bone structure pre-teenagers have – just to cash in on the thinness trend. Although famous Vogue editor Anna Wintour has entirely halted her magazine from featuring size-zero and below 16 models, that is only in Vogue, what about other magazines? To top it off, remember the deaths of French model Isabelle Caro, Uruguayan models Luisel and Eliana Ramos, and Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston? Most of them died from heart problems, and medical professionals have proven that it is the result of insufficient food intake. “Other health conditions can arise due to internal organs not receiving the nourishment and nutrition they deserve,” said Marian. A staggering 91% of college students have attempted controlled eating; all believing that thin is beautiful. Worse still, kids as young as 10 years old are having this mind-set. It then leads on to older females, especially college students. They resemble the group with the most exposure to eating disorders, and the ones most sociologists conduct research on. Marian confirms this statement, and says that it has struck quite a number of college students who came to her office for consultation. “Students have disclosed in counselling, their ultimate desire to achieve the “right” body image by controlling their weight for instance, skipping meals, eating far less, weighing themselves on a daily basis etc.” 42

From Depression to Death Depression is an excessively common disorder in the fashion industry. Apart from the pressures to stay skinny and avoiding food as mentioned earlier, models are subjected to a variety of unrelenting stressors that ultimately spirals into mental disorders. Behind the glam of the catwalk or photo shoot, modelling can be and is a lonely profession, in the sense that the models themselves are detached from pre-existing psychological and physical support systems in the form of family and friends, as travelling on short notice is a requirement of the job. Pre-shows and walking on runways is not as easy as it seems too. Think about the vicious physical criticism(s) from potential clients and even from their own representatives. Furthermore, modelling agencies pay very little attention to the wellbeing of their models, and this in turn makes them vulnerable to psychological disorders. This leads to a never-ending cycle of stress, anxieties and depression. A model not only suffers from these; eating disorders and substance dependencies and abuses usually accompany these detrimental psychological conditions. Some tragic examples of models that have ended up taking their own life include Canadian Hayley Kohle who jumped

off from her agency’s Milan apartment, Kazakhstani Ruslana Korshunova who committed suicide, Daul Kim who was found hanged in her boyfriend’s apartment, and male model Randy Johnston who died of drug overdose. Depression resulting from eating disorders is becoming increasingly common amongst students too. Based on experience, Marian admits that depression and severe mood swings are common results from eating disorders. It is not abnormal for people with eating disorders to be easily irritable, anxious, and in a state of feeling down all the time, which if not treated may lead to depression. A Malaysian college graduate, majoring in communications, says that she does not feel good after eating, and that it makes her feel extremely guilty. She will head to the bathroom to purge the food out right after a meal, and she will not wait long to do that because it will be harder for her to forcefully expel the food. “I binged and threw it up, then I will feel real good about myself,” the 23-year-old states, “Sometimes it is harder to throw up but then I will not stop, until my voice gets really hoarse.” When asked how she felt in the instances she didn’t forcefully expel the food she had just eaten, she says that she will feel

extremely guilty and she will hate herself for it, “I will normally be down and sad, and most importantly, I will feel really fat. I will hate myself for it.” Unhealthy thought processes such as these are the follow through from extreme exposure to eating disorders and depression.

According to her experience, Marian points out that during treatment, a psychotherapist will require patients to come in for an intense consultation program at least once a week, “It takes time for the person to make any form of recovery, hence psychotherapy is the best course of action. n the 30th of September, Campus Plus worked again with Animasia and Western Digital for an animations workshop, this time in Asia Pacific University, Kuala Lumpur. The workshop, titled “Animation Industry in Malaysia” featured speakers from both Animasia and Western Digital. Animasia’s Chief Operating Offier, Mr. Wong Kuan Loong and its Senior Video and Visual Effects Editor, Mr. Abdil Azim B Abdul Rahim took the time to talk to and show the students the particulars and quirks of the industry and shared details about the Animasia studio. Interesting facts were presented and some of the studio’s prototype works were featured as well. Western Digital’s Sales Manager, Mrs. Wong Yen Lin then showcased the usability and mobility of their hard drives. The showcase featured their flagship colour coded models, including the WD Blue, Red, Green, Purple and Black. The reception from the students was exceptional, as recalled by APU student Lok Chun Kit, “I wasn’t even aware that the

animation industry was that big, it really opened my eyes.” Many of the students had only good things to say about the workshop. Faiz Uzman says, “I really liked how they taught us how animation is made, from the story board to the finishing details.” Vernon states, “This workshop really opened the minds of our parents and us. Thanks to this workshop I now know that animation can be done in Malaysia, instead of overseas.” Samantha agreed with that, and added, “It was quite fun actually, they showed us sides of the animation industry that I didn’t know about.” The students were also very happy with the unique and eco-friendly water clocks given to them as freebies by Western Digital. Overall the workshop was a resounding success, with many students learning and knowing much more about the animation industry than before. Students left with the hope that many more great and enlightening workshops like this will be organised and conducted in the future.

AMPUS+: How did you discover your passion for singing, and how long have you been singing professionally? PY: I’ve enjoyed singing since childhood. It all started at a family recreational clubhouse in Kulim known as the Kulim Club; that was the first time I was exposed to the karaoke machine. From that point on, all I ever wanted to do was sing. I have been singing professionally for 12 years now; I secured my first paid gig at age 16. C+: Share with us your educational background – what did you study for in college? PY: I enrolled at Sunway University College and took up accounting. However, after a couple of years, I realised that the said field of study wasn’t for me. So I made the decision to pursue my love for music after all and go full steam with it. I haven’t looked back since.

C+: How did you break into the local music industry? PY: I would say my win in ntv7’s 2004 installation of Who Will Win Malaysian Topstar helped open doors for me. However, it wasn’t until I released my first EP in 2009 that I broke into the music industry. I was a newbie and so, to be nominated at the Anugerah Industri Musik (AIM) was amazing. C+: What is it like for an upcoming artiste in the Malaysian music industry? PY: It was tough but worth it. You will face rejection and encounter many a curveball but the only thing that will keep you moving forward is determination and perseverance. My advice to those starting out is this: Regardless of whether it is music or something else, don’t lose hope and stay focused on your goals. Don’t lose that dream or downplay its significance. If you aren’t clear in your direction, then throughout the journey, you will find yourself wanting to let go and perhaps even settle for less. Don’t succumb! Those moments of weakness will pass. Keep on going. That’s how I, like many before me, did it. C+: Where do you get your inspiration? PY: My inspiration comes from everyday experiences, my travels, listening to my favourite artistes, movies— just about anything, really. Sometimes, I’m inspired to write without any reason. As long as I stay tuned in to what’s important, I’ll be alright. C+: What is the biggest career challenge you have faced so far? PY: Trying to do what I want (career-wise) because it’s necessary and staying relevant. I’ve learnt to do what

makes me happy and chase goals which represent who I am as a musician, artiste, and individual. Life is about the choices we make, and I want to be able to live with the choices I’ve made. Ultimately, it all boils down to personal and professional priorities; when the two collide, it can get rough. C+: Which have been your most memorable performances to date? PY: I particularly enjoyed performing at the Guinness Arthur’s Day celebrations of 2011 and 2013. The massive crowds, atmosphere, big stage, sights, and sounds were super intense and I liked it. It was all very surreal. I felt like I belonged on that stage. It was a beautiful moment for me. C+: You also provide vocal training; what’s that like? PY: Yes, I do. It’s fun. I get to help my students tackle their concerns where singing is concerned. I’m pretty technical when it comes to vocals and it makes me very glad when my students see its benefits at work. C+: If you had to choose one song to call your all-time favourite, what would it be? PY: At this point of time, I’d have to say Wheels by Foo Fighters. C+: What’s your advice to our musically-inclined readers hungry for their claim to fame? PY: Music is not a destination, but rather a journey through a myriad of extreme highs and lows. Brace yourself for impact because the unexpected can creep up on you when you least expect it. How far you’re willing to go to keep your dream alive is a pretty good indication of the distance you will travel, after all is said and done. Stay professional, creative, and fluid. Also, advice can come in many different forms; take the good and throw out the bad. Be true to the musician inside you. Be open to constructive criticism but you may have to go with your gut instinct sometimes; don’t be quick to write off your intuitions. At the same time, don’t let the glitz and glamour get to your head. It can mess with your balance and sense of what’s right and what’s not. C+: What’s your most recent endeavour with music? PY: I’ve released my latest single, Ring My Bell which is currently playing on Hitz.fm and MIX FM. For the said track, I have put together a self-made lyric video— one which hopefully captures my love of stop motion animation. egardless of which ethnicity she comes from, she will stick to the culture of self-beautification. The question is, is the depiction of beauty as being super skinny and tall the norm?

Super skinny and tall - Is that the beauty standard? The Western depiction of beauty has come a long, long way in influencing beauty (and the perception of it) around the world. Women, mostly, have devoted so much time in improving their beauty accordingly for years, but not to some women in other places of the world.

According to other cultures around the world, super skinny and tall are not the main ingredients of beauty. Their depictions of beauty may seem peculiar; however, these women have dedicated their bodies for beauty ever since they were little girls. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not talk about the Chinese foot binding for women because that has not been applicable since hundreds of years ago. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talk about what is still applicable as a beauty norm up to this moment.

3. The bold and beautiful bodies of Mauritanian women 1. The beautiful big feet of Indonesian Karo Batak women The Karo Batak, who live in the northern island of Indonesia of Sumatra, deem women with big feet attractive, even until now. University of Washington anthropologist Geoff Kushnick conducted a sociological research about this matter, proving that both genders of the ethnicity prefer an illustration of women with bigger feet than smaller ones. The scientist found that Western media has not thoroughly exposed the Karo Batak population, resulting in their continued traditional and cultural perspective of beauty. Linking to the ecological value, Kushnick interviewed a Karo Batak man, who confirmed that big feet are indeed attractive, and the interviewee goes on to wonder how women with smaller feet can work in a rice field.

2. The tall and beautiful necks of the Burmese Kayan tribe The longer your neck is, the more attractive you become. As fellow South East Asians, who happen to live in relatively close proximity with the Kayan tribe, surely you must have heard of them. Yes, they are the women who wear brass rings on their necks, whose weight can reach up to 22 pounds (the brass rings, not the women themselves!). This beauty ritual starts since they are as young as five years old, and their mothers, who are wearing the same brass rings on their already-elongated necks as well, will add it up as they grow older. The norm of the brass rings in the Kayan village depicts elegance and social status for these women – two main points explaining why most women dress up, only in a different way.

Contrary to popular Western beauty belief, the men of a Mauritanian village called Atar see overweight women as being attractive and stretch marks as huge turn-ons. Mauritanian elders will force-feed the younger ones to achieve such a look, making them eat at least 15,000 calories a day – more than what a regular male body builder eats, or Michael Phelps! The women send their daughters off to a camp, and promise them that they will turn beautiful once they are home from the camp. The camp leaders will force-feed these girls, and even threatening to cane if they refuse to eat. Even so, the bold bodies of the Mauritanian women portray higher social class and beauty.

4. The beautiful scars of the Ethiopian Even though scarification is widely known worldwide as a part of a tradition in tribes, the Ethiopian Karo tribe’s women have become one of the most significant traditional beautification rituals around the world. These women normally scar their torsos and chests, while the men will find them attractive and sensual. Scarification, however, is only popular in the dark-skinned cultures, because tattoos will be difficult to view. It is a type of body art as well, and is deemed as being a part of the modern tattoo culture. Tattoo artists will create shallow cuts and form visual or typographic designs on skins.

5. The beautifully stretched earlobes of Kenyan women In the tradition of a tribe called Maasai, located in the border of Kenya and Tanzania, the women have different ways of portraying beauty. Their elongated ears are the most significant among all. Although they acknowledge the presence of Western media and the ideologies it tries to disseminate into their lifestyle, the Maasai still stick to their traditions. The women still elongate their ears by piercing them with thorns, and then lengthen them by using elephant tusks, stones, or twigs. They, moreover, will wear beads to beautify their ears, and setting the beads up together as headpieces and necklaces as well. “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholders.” That quote validates the diversification of beauty around the world. It validates you to dress up, and be as beautiful as you think you are. When you listen to it, you won’t even realise that your head is actually nodding. ‘Kings Of Suburbia’ is purely amazing, we can’t find the right words for it, but it’s a song that you should listen to. ‘Never Let You Down’ is another catchy and attractive song of the album. But what makes us love it so much is the sound they produced! This is the new sound from Tokio Hotel that we really love. Grab this album and take a journey with Tokio Hotel.

but fall in love with ‘Mary Lee’ too! It is an amazing blues ballad with rich melody that is hard to resist. ‘Trouble’ is an up-tempo feel good song and it is similar with ‘Rabbit Hole’. Both of them are easily enjoyable, but ‘Rabbit Hole’ has that instant appeal to attract you the most. ‘Love Is Only A Heartbeat Away’ is a folk ballad style song with beautiful strings that’ll move your heart. The album concludes with ‘They Told Me It Rained’, a warm ending to the record. Through this song, you’ll realise that this is the soulful sound of a boy becoming a man. This album is the evidence of his growth and it is beyond our expectations. It is certainly worth a listen (or two).

German electronic DJ and producer, Robin Schulz has finally released his first album. Unlike with his previous singles, Prayer is a simple album that relies on emotion and ordinary dance beats. However, it is still something amazing that we have never heard

Girl’ is a simple and bouncy song, you may find it generic, but this is the simple song that we’re always looking for. The groovy hits of clean guitar in ‘I’ve Had It Up To Here’ is the reason why it’s so good. It is musically unpredictable and special. What makes ‘The British Are Coming’ our favourite track? It’s definitely because of the fantastic guitars again. We love the guitars so much that we can’t help but keep listening to it. If we have to choose a song that you shouldn’t miss, it would be ‘Da Vinci’. It is a wonderful song with perfect arrangement, we like the whistling part a lot and it is truly enjoyable. They are not the Weezer you once knew anymore. Give this album a try now.

It is irresistible and he is also able to enhance the original version of the songs. The astonishing piano melodies and loops, saxophone rifts and shakers dominate the whole album. It’s a rather interesting album as we have heard something that is even better than the original song itself. You may think some of Schulz’s elements are redundant, but they actually work pretty well for clubs. We love this album, it is pretty well done and exhilarating.

Legendary Classic Rock Band

Gets A Modern Remastered Touch Led Zeppelin is set to unleash an extensive reissue programme of all nine of its studio albums in chronological order.

ed… what? Who or what is that you ask? Shame on you for asking! For the uninitiated, Led Zeppelin is like, only the most successful, innovative and influential of rock groups in history. Duh. Let us school you in the ways of rock. Back in ’68, the band was formed in London by singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham. They’ve composed and created a catalogue of songs that are some of the most celebrated in rock ‘n’ roll history, that even to this day, resonate with fans young and old around the world. Their heavy, guitar-driven sound was rooted in blues for their early albums, though their unique style drew from a wide variety of influences, including folk music. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. And they’ve only sold like, what, 300 million albums worldwide to date. Still, no matter how many times you have listened to their music, you’ve never heard of Led Zeppelin like this before. Deluxe editions of their first three albums, Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, and Led Zeppelin

III, are the first to be released. Each album is newly remastered by guitarist and producer Jimmy Page. Excited yet? Good. Because on top of that, Led Zeppelin will also be opening its vault to share with listeners dozens of as yet unheard studio and live recordings through a second disc of companion audio comprised entirely of unreleased music related to that album. Page says, “The material on the companion discs presents a portal to the time of the recording of Led Zeppelin. It is a selection of work in progress with rough mixes, backing tracks, alternate versions, and new material recorded at the time”. The companion audio for the group’s

eponymous debut, Led Zeppelin, will feature a previously unreleased performance recorded on 10 October 1969 at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. The nine-song set features seven tracks from the album, including an epic 15-minute version of Dazed And Confused, as well as Heartbreaker and Moby Dick. On the Led Zeppelin II companion audio, fans get a rare first peek into the band’s recording sessions, with alternate mixes of five songs from the album, backing tracks to Thank You and Living Loving Maid (She’s Just A Woman) and the previously unreleased track La La. The nine tracks featured on Led Zeppelin III’s companion audio continue to offer a window into the band’s recording process with seven studio outtakes of songs from the album as well as three previously unheard compositions: Jennings Farm Blues, Bathroom Sound (an instrumental version of Out On The Tiles), and the band’s take on the blues classic Keys To The Highway/Trouble In Mind. Leeteuk and Heechul have finally returned to the team after their military service! This album marks the reunion of Super Junior and also their first Korean album since the 2012 Sexy, Free & Single. Midnight Blues is a seductive R&B track that showcases the group’s sexy and soulful vocals. It is indeed unusual to Super Junior because dance tracks are their strong point. Evanesce is another track that is moderately within Midnight Blues tonality. It slows things down, but still keeps the intensity high. Raining Spell for Love is more upbeat and it highlights the pleasant voices of the group. If you’re looking for an energetic and lively song, Shirt would be the one for you. It is a party mix that combines hip hop, Samba and pop. This is Love is the standout track on the album due to its amusing music that makes you want to sing together. MAMACITA is an album that proves the return of Super Junior and they are ready to conquer the best male groups in K-Pop again.

Teen Top is all grown up musically! Hoping to give a sexy and manly image in the future, they have released their new album Exito to show their determination. Do you think they have achieved it, even just a little bit? Let’s find out. Generally, the album emphasises on ballads more than dance tracks, which is fascinating. Missing is a groovy R&B track with lots of remarkable vocal runs, while Alone is the only dance track on the album. It is unusual to them because they are known for their danceable songs. Cry is a beautiful ballad and it makes Teen Top shine. Love Is… and Remote Control are the most powerful songs on Exito. Love Is… is attractive because it sounds like a Latin song and is done by guitar and piano. While for Remote Control, the combination of Hip Hop and R&B are what makes it unique. Throughout this album, you can see Teen Top’s mature effort. The entire album is skilfully constructed and gorgeously sung.

Entertainment officially confirmed that group member Jessica Jung will no longer be part of Girls’ Generation, but will still be part of the agency and will continue her individual events under them. According to S.M. Entertainment, Jessica has informed them early this year that she will stop her activities as a Girls’ Generation’s member after releasing one more album due to personal reasons. After persistent discussion of priorities and interests, both

parties just could not find the time to work together. While discussing when to announce the news, Jessica posted the status on her own, saying that her co-members made her choose between her fashion business and Girls’ Generation. However, the remaining members of the group claimed that they are only doing the best for the group and they are also trying to protect the group. Known as one of the most powerful vocalist in K-pop, Ailee has finally released her much anticipated mini-album, Magazine. The album opens with an upbeat retro track, Don’t Touch Me that comprises a piano backtrack with claps and tambourines. What comes next is Crazy, which has a hip hop vibe with a minor hint of jazz. But that one track that we really love on this album is Goodbye Now. This track is a warm and touching ballad that moves our heart. Ailee sings beautifully and she has achieved the hardest aspects of singing a ballad, which is the ability to deliver the emotion of the song to us. By listening to this song, you can easily imagine a break up scene of a drama that once made you heartbroken. We also like the last song on the album, Teardrop. The piano, the hook and the beat are the important elements that make the track amazing. All in all, not a bad effort.

The boys are back with another full-length R&B album with funky and unexpected twists. Wow, the album opens with the maddeningly bouncy, catchy and playful party song, Go Crazy! that makes you want to dance! It’s unbelievably upbeat and you can’t help but to dance. Like Tonight is relatively more down tempo than Go Crazy!, but it has a great R&B feel with complex melodies and a killer rap break. We love She’s Ma Girl and it is one of the stand out tracks on this album. It’s an amusing Swing and Jazz influenced song with great musical accompaniment. Mine reminds us of 70s disco with a touch of Michael Jackson’s musical style. Beautiful and I’m Your Man were both originally released on their Japanese albums, however we think that the Korean versions are better than the Japanese versions. Overall, it is a pretty good album that’s worth your time.

That doesn't mean if you are over 35 you are unlikely to develop testicular cancer. Fortunately, testicular cancer has one of the highest cure rates (over 90%) of all cancers. And if discovered early, the treatments needed are simple. Though this cancer is still rare, it affects an increasing number of men every year. By being aware of your testicles and checking them regularly, you could help diagnose the problem and quickly arrest and treat testicular cancer. If you check your testicles regularly you will get to know how they normally look and feel and you will be able to spot any unusual changes or growth. The best time to check your testicles is after a shower when the scrotal skin is relaxed. While testicular changes are not necessarily cancerous or harmful, even the smallest changes to your testes should be checked by your doctor. Many men are shy to seek professional help. As such a self-examination can be very helpful to detect warning signs that may include swelling, lump or pain in a testicle.

s much as we love pizza, pasta, bread and sweets, the concept of “carbohydrates will make you fat” has been implanted on our minds long enough. It’s the time for carbs to demand justice. Forget what you have heard about carbs all this while and listen to this: You can eat carbs and still manage to slim down, as long as you stick to these healthy carbs. Are you excited? Or you are wondering how could this be? The story is more complicated, but it is mainly because all carbs are not created equally. Here are the six “good” and delicious carbs that won’t ruin your diet, but will enrich it.

1. Fruits

Undeniably, fruits are relatively high in sugar compared to other foods, which is why in some of the popular diets, they recommend you to limit the intake of fruits. Apart from that, fruits actually fall into the carb category too. However, with the correct amount of intake, you can still continue to lose weight while enjoying fruits. Moreover, for those who are craving for sugar, fruit is your perfect life saviour. Unfortunately, dried fruit doesn’t count and it is much sweeter than fresh fruit.

2. Beans

Yes, beans are rich in carbs, but they are also an outstanding source for regulating your digestive system and sugar levels, fighting against fat, lowering cholesterol levels and helps in stopping your cravings. Do not hate beans because they are actually your important ally in your slimming project.

3. Oats

We’re sorry if this is the thousandth time you have seen this appearing here, but they are just too good for you! However, purchasing oatmeal is tricky because oatmeal companies have convinced us that cooking real oats is tough and very time consuming. Wake up and stop buying those instant, pre-sweetened oats! Real oats are actually low in calorie, high in fibre and not fattening. Additionally, they also cook up in minutes. Oats are definitely your best friend because it releases the energy slowly to keep you full and satisfied. It is far more efficient than a bowl of cereals or a piece of fruit!

4. Quinoa

This superfood cooks just like rice and is a complete protein. It contains all nine essential amino acids, which are astonishing for your skin and your body to form lean, calorie-burning muscle. Four grams per half-cup serving is sufficient to be your lunch or dinner!

5. Barley

Another best friend of yours in fighting hunger during your diet. It also helps in maintaining your digestive system to stay healthy and metabolises your body’s fats and cholesterol. Comparatively, barley groats or whole hull-less barley contains more healthy nutrients than pearled barley. So make sure you get the right one!

6. Whole grain pasta and bread

Just when you thought you’d have to forget about pasta and bread, we are here to inform you that you can eat them on a diet. While many of us are used to clubbing and bar hopping, there is another form of moving from spot to spot that can be equally, if not more fun!

erhaps a lesser known, and definitely under appreciated form of tourism within Malaysia are the shores of our beautiful islands, not to mention the folklore and activities to be done that come with some. There are a few clusters of little green emeralds that rise above the sapphire ocean that are worth the time and money; and the returns of your investment will come in the form of experiences and memories to cherish for a lifetime! While there are many islands to choose from in Malaysia, we will only be focusing on three islands.

THE LANGKAWI ARCHIPELAGO This famous Malaysian island was believed to be cursed in 1819, by a woman named 64

Mahsuri – who was put to death for alleged adultery (another popular tourist spot is Mahsuri’s tomb). The curse was that there would be no peace and prosperity on the island for seven generations. Whether or not one chooses to believe this, the curse has been lifted and the island has become quite prosperous indeed. In the surrounding waters of tax-free haven Langkawi, are a number of islands. It’s not just the cheap booze and chocolates that make it a popular tourist spot; the charming and laidback town lifestyle and the friendliness of the locals provide an uplifting break from the hectic city life. Head on over to the beach side and you will find a myriad of tour operators that provide island hopping packages. The price ranges from around RM30* – RM60* per person,

depending on the tour provider. Then there is also the option to rent a whole boat, which costs between RM250* – RM300* if you intend to take your own time and do not want to jump in a boat with other random tourists. The most famous islands that are the usual picks for tourists to hop along are Pulau Dayang Bunting, Pulau Singa Besar and Pulau Beras Basah. Lake of the Pregnant Maiden. The lake is believed to have mystical qualities that help barren women bear children, upon taking a dip in its waters. Seen from afar, the entire island also has the features of a pregnant woman lying on her back. One can enjoy the lush greenery of the island through the nature walk which has been paved to make the experience enjoyable for tourists – but beware the monkeys! Other activities that can be enjoyed include a natural fish spa and use of paddle boats. There is also a souvenir shop for those who want mementos of the place.

SINGA BESAR This is usually the second destination on the island hopping tour, as the island is situated between Dayang Bunting and Beras Basah.

The island is rather undeveloped and this allows it to maintain its natural charm and beauty. The major attraction on this island would be the eagle feeding. Most tour services would stop slightly away from the shore and the boatman would throw pieces of chicken into the sea; then watch as magnificent eagles swoop down at the water to feed. There is also the option to camp on the island for those who want to. However, you should get in touch with the Langkawi Tourist Information Centre before making plans to go camping.

BERAS BASAH The last, or first, island depending on the route you take, is a haven for beach lovers. This

island is often times described as pristine and beautiful. The sands are white, and the water clear. Beras Basah is essentially the best spot to relax and unwind. There is not much of activities per se, but just soak up the sun and embrace your surroundings. It is a great venue to spend some quiet time by yourself or with those you love; so bring a book or pack a picnic – just make sure that you pack those stuff well as the ride in motorboats tend to splash water all over the place, so prepare to get wet! These are merely three destinations that we have mentioned. Additionally, should you get the opportunity, island hop around the isles of Redang, Perhentian and Lang Tengah. French Affair A Neighbourhood

Tucked amidst the friendly neighbourhood of TTDI is Topshelf; a classic European fare that brings comfort and a feel 66 | CAMPUS PLUS of home to Europeans and a unique tasting palate to locals.

opshelf is a French restaurant with a bistro dining concept, allowing diners to partake in a serious culinary affair at an affordable price. Topshelf, named after the culinary jargon to mean the top of the shelf where only the best is meant to be, has managed to live up to its set standard. The exterior of the restaurant is warm and lively while its interior boasts an urban industrial kitchen-like theme with stainless steel tables paired with cool café chairs set against retro tiled black floors. The walls stand with a simplistic cement base but are beautifully decorated with paintings and framed achievements of the restaurant’s success in its two years. It makes a great spot for friends, families and even for couples looking to cosy it up amidst the slight feel of romance as the restaurant offers soft, cascading yellow light from unique lighting fixtures. Led by manager Chef Gary, the restaurant offers classic French cuisines with a touch of Italian at bistro prices. “We want people to enjoy European food and know that it doesn’t have to be expensive,” he said. The menu presents a range of starters, some of which are true French classics such as escargot, chicken liver pate and Crab Meat Risotto. The Nicoise salad; RM27, is a good choice for a fresh start as it comes with mixed greens, beans, tomatoes and quail eggs which is generously topped off with fresh slices of tuna. After this starter, I didn’t have an ounce of doubt

about the freshness or quality of the restaurant’s kitchen. The tuna was firm yet succulent and tasty with a fleshy red tone, a clear indication of its freshness. On a rainy night, the best of all starters is the Moules Mariniere priced at only RM30. The dish is a warm, soup based meal of fresh mussels simmered in white wine, shallots and herbs, served with a side of delicious crusty bread. The portion was generous and enough to satisfy two, as the mussels were aplenty and the broth was like a lullaby to the tummy on a cold night. Topself’s main course menu offers a variety of traditional French dishes such as the Pork Belly Confit, Coq Au Vin, Bouillabaisse and Beef Bourguignon. The house bestseller is the Duck Confit; a duck leg that’s slow cooked in its own fat, resulting in melt-in-your-mouth meat that falls off the bone. The duck is served on a bed of French beans and braised cabbage and is easily a meal made with no shortcuts, definitely worth the RM35. The menu stays true to the classics of a European fare and offers simpler meals with a fine selection of Italian staples. This includes Aglio Olio pasta, Pesto Capellini and of course, the traditional Spaghetti Bolognese. The inclusion of Italian into the menu makes this restaurant an easy place for families with children who may not adapt well to the taste of France. As France is a wine country, what French restaurant is complete without a fine selection of wine? The owner and manager of Topshelf

handpicked a smorgasbord of wines available in the menu, along with a selection of regular thirst quenchers that range from soft drinks and coffees to cocktails and beers. Before you head out after a warm and hearty meal, it’s almost mandatory to fill the dessert compartment in your belly. Staying true to its French theme, the desserts available in Topshelf include the traditional Crème Brulee, Tiramisu, to-die for Varlhona Chocolate Panna Cotta, Mille-Feuille and the ever famous Apple Tart Tatin. The latter of the list takes about 20 minutes to prepare but it’s worth the wait if you love the combination of warm apples sprinkled with a dash of cinnamon in an old-fashioned turn over tart served with homemade vanilla ice cream. Truly the cherry on the cake when the wind is howling and rain is pouring outside. Culinary enthusiasts can look forward to the Chef’s Table, a once a month affair where the managers of the restaurant get behind the scenes and cook up a 6 course meal, limited to 12 people. This dinner is an intimate affair, meant to showcase the talent of the leading men of Topshelf as guest patrons around a communal table and watch them dish out elegant meals, true to the European palate. The Chef’s Table is held every last Sunday of the month and is priced at RM120++ per person or RM180++ for a wine paired dinner. Ennis weaves a tale that gives the classic Nick Fury the proper send-off the character deserves. It opens with Fury sitting alone in a hotel room with nothing but bourbon and a 1911 Colt for company – coughing his many confessions into an antique tape recorder that chronicles a legacy of carnage that spans over 50 years. Readers are taken on a history of 20th century world warfare, as Fury recounts his many battles and off-the-book missions in countless hotspots spanning the globe. From Indochina in 1954 to his team up with a young Marine sniper by the name of Frank Castle (still in his pre-Punisher days) to assassinate a Viet Cong general in Vietnam circa 1970, there is no shortage of brutal violence and the triumph of human element in the face of war. Readers can also look forward to the appearance and origin story of fan-favourite Punisher villain, Barracuda as he crosses paths with Fury in Nicaragua, 1984. 68

Unless you’ve been living on Mars all your life, surely you must know who Richard Branson is. Alright, for the benefit of those who don’t – he’s the founder of the highly successful Virgin Group of companies; with disparate enterprises and businesses covering airlines, hotels and records. Rather, there are secrets of leadership in which Branson has learned along the way from his days at Virgin Records and to his most recent work with The Elders. It’s a great leadership book for all, regardless of whether you’re newly in the job market or a seasoned manager.

When Small is Big Samsung NX mini

he Samsung NX mini is an example of how the camera has become more than just a tool to capture memories. It’s a testament to how the camera has become somewhat of a fashion accessory, as it comes in a variety of colours and can be put in the pocket of your jeans. Learn more about this camera in this review! One of the first things to know about the NX mini is the fact that as of March 19, 2014, it is the world’s slimmest and lightest interchangeable lens camera. Of course, this means little if its lenses are big, which is why Samsung specially developed two lenses specifically for this camera, which makes use of a new mount called the NX-M. These two lenses are the 9mm f/3.5 and the 9-27mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS. The 9mm is a great lens if you’re looking for a wide angle for wefies, but it isn’t that fast with a widest aperture of f/3.5. Nonetheless, it’s reasonably sharp and will do for most situations. The 9-27mm on the other hand gives you a little bit more flexibility, but will also add to the bulk of the camera. When it comes to features, this camera is loaded with the latest features, including integrated Wi-Fi, NFC functionality, and a tiltable LCD touchscreen. The LCD touchscreen is able to tilt 180 degrees upwards, making it easy to take selfies! While on the subject of

selfies, there’s a number of ways to take selfies with this camera. Wink Shot allows the camera to detect winks, before it takes a picture, while Smile Shot lets the camera take a shot whenever it detects a smile. As for usability, the NX mini is a camera that’s highly simple to use. There are some physical buttons that lets you access the exposure settings quickly, so advanced users can tweak them easily. This camera is also very responsive, thanks to a very fast start up time and a respectable focus time. The one thing that’s rather disappointing with this camera is its ergonomics – there’s no grip, which makes extended shooting somewhat uncomfortable. In the camera’s defence though, it’s unbelievably light, so you won’t really be straining your hand carrying this little fellow around. In terms of image quality, the NX mini offers a fair amount of sharpness when paired with the 9mm. When it comes to low-light performance, we’d likely push this camera to ISO 1,600 if you’re planning to print, and up to ISO 3,200, for online uploading. Overall, we give the NX mini top points for portability and looks, and give an approving nod when it comes to image quality. If you’re looking for a simple and easy-to-use interchangeable lens camera, this may just be the answer for you.

I’m All About That Bass JVC HA-FXZ200 DESIGN/FEATURES

When it comes to in-ear monitors (IEMs), it’s always about precision, without too much emphasis on highs, mids or lows. However, JVC broke that mould by creating the HA-FXZ200, an IEM with an emphasis on bass. We take a look at this very impressive IEM in this review.

At first glance, you’ll notice that the HA-FXZ200 can be rather unsightly, as it’s significantly larger than most earphones. When wearing it, this IEM will definitely stick out from your ears like a sore thumb. There’s a good reason why it’s larger than most IEMs though, and that’s because it has something that’s called a stream woofer. This stream woofer is essentially a miniaturised subwoofer, which helps the HAFXZ200 to reproduce powerful bass. To allow for an emphasis on bass without interfering with the mids and highs, JVC “channelled” it through a stream duct. The mids and highs are handled by a twin system unit, so even though there’s an emphasis on bass, you’re still getting the accurate and detailed sound that’s commonly associated with an IEM.

SOUND QUALITY There’s no other way of saying it – this is the ultimate IEM for bass heads. Thanks to the aforementioned stream woofer, the bass is absolutely great. In songs like Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’, the bass takes centre stage, while in the acoustic rendition of Maroon 5’s ‘She Will Be Loved’, the percussions are clearly heard. It’s also worth mentioning that the HAFXZ200 has a really good sound stage. When playing orchestral music, you can clearly hear the position of every instrument, which is a great thing!

The HA-FXZ200 is also more than capable of handling mids and highs. When tried with some of Nina Simone’s songs, her voice is clearly defined, to the point where it feels like she’s performing live, in the room. However, like every pair of IEMs, you’ll need to create a good amount of “seal” in order to get the maximum amount of bass from the HA-FXZ200. The bundled silicone tips come in various sizes and does a good job of providing this “seal”, but for even better results, it’s recommended to purchase a pair of Comply foam tips. Needless to say, a dedicated DAC will further enhance the audio quality.

CONNECTIVITY When it comes to connection options, the HAFXZ200 uses your run-by-the-mill 3.5mm jack. This makes it compatible with any smartphone and audio player. Because it’s an IEM, there’s no in-line remote controller or built-in microphone, so you’ll have to unplug it whenever you take a call.

Not everyone can afford Philips’ high-end Fidelio L2 headphones, which retails for just above RM1,000. If you’re eager to experience audio quality that is very similar to that of the L2 though, then you may want to take a look at its younger sibling, the Fidelio M1. Here’s our take on this mid-range headphones.

nlike the L2 which has a semi-closed back design, the M1 has a fully closed-back design. What this means is that the M1 blocks out a significant amount of ambient noise, allowing you to fully focus on your music. Generally, a closed-back design is good if you aren’t particular about sound staging, while an open-back design lets the music “blend” with ambient noise, for a more natural music experience. Apart from that, the M1 also has Bass Reflex System, which is basically the use of strategically placed vents that ensure there’s optimal air-pressure in the ear cups. This helps to provide better bass response so you’ll get some really great beats when you’re listening to songs like Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’. In terms of usage, the M1 fits exactly like the L2 does – it’s extremely comfortable! The headband doesn’t clamp down hard on your head, even if you’re wearing glasses, so you can leave it on for hours, without any discomfort. Further helping in

the comfort department is the fact that the ear pads make use of memory foam, which helps the M1 to comfortably fit the contour of your head. As for audio performance, this pair of headphones perform just as advertised. They provide highly accurate audio, with plenty of details to be heard. However, it’s worth mentioning that the audio signature tends to favour bass ever so slightly, making this a good option for bass heads. If you like acoustic songs and Pop, this is definitely the headphones for you. Other notable features of the M1 is that it comes with a detachable cable that has an integrated microphone. There’s also a button that allows you to easily pick up calls, making the M1 something that really should be considered if your primary source of music is from your smartphone. In short, the Philips Fidelio M1 is truly a great pair of headphones. They’re comfortable, look great, and most importantly, sound great. This is something that you can use on a daily basis, at home or even when you’re out and about. If you’re looking for a pair of headphones to splurge on this month, look for the Philips Fidelio M1.

Project Your Life Philips PPX 3410 Need to present something without the hassle of a big projector? The Philips PPX 3410 is here for you. At first glance the PicoPix PPX 3410 looks like any other miniature projector, but with its built in battery and great video quality, it is anything but. BUILD The PPX 3410 is very small in size, with a width and depth of 105mm and a height of 31.5mm, it can fit comfortably into any compartment in your backpack or any other carrying device. And weighing in at just 270 grams, the weight is almost a negligible factor, enabling you to carry it anywhere without encumbering yourself. The body itself is very sleek and practical, with a perforated hard plastic side to help the machine spread excess heat. Speaking of heat, after a long period of use the machine tends to heat up a lot, in spite of the aforementioned perforated sides. 76

The size of the projection can reach up to 305cm (120 inches) in size, with a native resolution of 854x480 and an aspect ratio of 16:9. 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 576i, 576p, 480p and 480i can all be achieved with a maximum of 60 frames per second, depending on the input. The projection looks very nice in spite of the machine’s small size, though as usual with projectors the further away the PPX 3410 is from the projected surfaced and the larger the size of the projection, the blurier the image is. The speakers on the PPX 3410, while not top of the line, still provide decent sound quality for movie and audio playback. The machine also has a built in MP4 player which supports most common video formats, though the performance sometimes suffers with jumps and lag which can negatively impact your experience.

The battery life of the PPX 3410 is not something to be sniffed at either, with a 2 hour playback time before it runs dry, you can comfortably play a full movie with a little time to spare. The lamp is LED, and lamp life is touted to be up to 30,000 hours. The lens of the PPX 3410 is adjustable to clarify picture quality according to the distance the machine is to the projected surface. Items packed in the box included the projector itself, a small cloth bag for the projector, a charging AC adaptor, a standard USB cable and a HDMI cable. All in all, I liked the PPX 3410 very much for its “go anywhere, plug in anything” mentality; most of the files tested were read by the machine without much issue, though some of the more unconventional files were unable to be read by the built in MP4 player. The sacrifices made for its size and usability can be an issue but its strengths more than make up for the drawbacks of the PPX 3410.

INPUT Another feature that’s makes the PPX 3410 so useful is the various input methods one can use with the machine. Compatible inputs include audio & video mini HDMI with HDCP, VGA (custom plug with adaptor, composite (CVBS) & Audio; output audio is compatible with a 3.5 mm audio out jack DC-IN. The PPX 3410 also includes a DC jack for external memory, usable with SD/SDHC/ SDXC cards. Of course a USB port is also built in to connect to mass storage devices with mini USB and to connect to your PC, mass storage devices (portable hard disks) and for charging.

Car-nival (Part 1) C

ertain rides are unmemorable, like that car in that movie from sometime back – notice how even the movie title is forgotten. Then, there are rides that make you remember movies! Here are some (not all) of those vehicles, in no particular order, because even we found this list too difficult to rate.

1. Batmobiles What would Batman be without his gadgets? Well, just a silly guy in a cape, and not to mention dead. Almost as iconic as the man himself is his main gadget the Batmobile, which has evolved over time like the various versions of Batman that have come and gone – from TV series to film. These rides stand out in terms of form and function. The most recent edition, ‘The Tumbler’ is a cross-over of a Lamborghini and a tank! How cool is that? Plus, it even houses a couple of Bat-cycles which doubles as the vehicle’s front tires and can detach when necessary. You would definitely bat your eyes when this ride passes by you.

2. Bond-mobiles There are certain benchmarks that need to be achieved, to appear in a Bond movie. A level which only a select number of cars has managed to achieve. Among notable mentions would be the Aston Martin DB5 which first appeared in Goldfinger. This was a pioneer car in the Bond franchise, as it was the first to be fitted with

mind-blowing gadgets like revolving plates, oil spillers, bulletproof windows, twin machine guns and an ejector seat! This then lead to the more sophisticated vehicles that Bond uses nowadays. However, back then, the Lotus Esprit featured in The Spy Who Loved Me couldn’t have been more futuristic as it could convert into a submarine!

3. Chevrolet Camaro Who doesn’t love or want a car that can turn into a supercool robot!?The Camaro’s biggest break on screen came with the Transformers movie franchise. Throughout the films, we have seen the coming and goings of actors including Shia LaBeouf, and yes, sadly even Megan Fox, but Bumblebee will always, always be there. Although he got a makeover along the way, he is still the same loveable Camaro. Though he lacks a voice box, he is still one of the most expressive of Autobots. With enough firepower and speed to wow, plus unforgettable cinematic fight scenes, this Camaro is definitely a star in its own right – though, Bumblebee didn’t start out as a Camaro…

4. Volkswagen Beetle Lesser known to mainstream pop culture perhaps, but Bumblebee was first a Volkswagen Beetle. Apart from that, this Love Bug also featured in films such as Herbie: Fully Loaded most recently. Like Bumblebee, Herbie talks too, and everybody loves a car that talks, don’t they? The Volkswagen was probably the only good idea that Hitler proposed. At the time, he ordered for a car to be developed which was affordable and efficient – thus the name Volkswagen, which translated from German means ‘the people’s car’.

5. Nissan Skyline Like Jackie Chan, this Asian has made it big in Hollywood. Most notably as the car of choice of the late Paul Walker, best known for his role as Brian O’Connor from the Fast and Furious movies – especially in The Fast And The Furious: Turbocharged Prelude. If a car is good enough for Brian O’Connor, what more for us mere driving mortals. Moreover, the Skyline is also known as a legend killer; as a fully mod-ed car it can kill the reputation of well-known super cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis.
