Of Darkness, Monsters

And Light

I

t’s a month of darkness and monsters. We’re talking about the darkness and monster from within and without. To many depression sufferers, their plight and condition is likened to being in a constant state of darkness, and not an insubstantial number of them have named it their monster within. Their battle against this monster is a lonely and arduous one, made all the more difficult by the ignorance of society and the stigma attached to this mental illness. Learn more about depression, its causes and symptoms, and how to slay this monster in our Cover Story on pages 40 – 43, as well as in the accompanying story in Wellness on page 63. And as the bewitching hour of Halloween draws near, we tackle the monsters (and all manner of foul supernatural beasts) from without. Arm yourself with some garlic and salt, and you’re well on your way to a good night’s sleep and peace of mind. Or, pick from an array of household items to ward off those pesky evils from our list of ghost-busting stuff in Lifehacks/DIY on pages 48 and 49. We also asked some of you what are the creatures or characters you would like to dress up in for Halloween. All that fun is in Campus Talk on page 52. And what’s the ultimate way of fighting all this darkness and gloom? With light, of course. Deepavali, the festival of lights is around the corner, and what better way to light up the pages than with colourful and dazzling Kolam art? Admire and be inspired by the many varieties of this ancient art in our Arts & Culture pages on 50 and 51. While basking in the warm lights, do take the time (and pleasure) to check out our new Anime section (page 55) which touches on all things Otaku; relive the best moments and experiences of Malaysia’s ambassador to the Bosch World Experience 2014 (pages 44 and 45); travel to and soak in the lush offerings of nature in the oldest tropical rainforest in Malaysia (pages 64 and 65); and take a ride with us on some American muscle (Dreamcars, page 77). With that, we would like to wish all our readers a Happy Deepavali. Oh, and have a trick-free and treat-filled Halloween too!

Australian Prime Minister Checks Out The Development Of Australian Branch Universities

A Japanese Student Inspires

MOU SIGNING WITH KANSAI GAIDAI

Exchange Program Mika Murai, a Japanese student who used to pursue her tertiary education in Sunway University inspired an exchange program between her alma mater and Osaka-based Kansai Gaidai University. “Studying in Malaysia changed my initial doubt of effective English-learning in Asia, [as] this is a country where almost everyone, even children speak good English and at least 2-3 additional languages,” Murai said. She then cited the wonderful time she had gotten during her stay in both Malaysia and Sunway University. Murai, who appreciated the support Sunway University gave her throughout her studies, showed that she was pleased with the news on the partnership between the two institutions, “I hope this will further enhance the diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and Japan.” Both Sunway University and Kansai Gaidai College signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last September, and the two institutions expected the exchange program to begin by 2015. It allowed Sunway University’s Japanese counterpart to send 30 of their students to Sunway University’s Centre for English Language Studies (CELS) for English-language advancement programs for a stated period. Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group Professor Graeme Wilkinson said that the Sunway Education Group had been serious in developing international education relationships, by cooperating with high quality institutions that even allowed both students and staff exchange program.

Feeding The Growing World The Association of Commonwealth University (ACU) hosted its annual Summer School in the Malaysian campus of Nottingham University to discuss the spreading possibility of world hunger and poverty. Passing the question of ‘can we feed the growing world?’ to 36 students from 19 Commonwealth countries, the summer school invited students from a variety of disciplines, including agriculture, biosciences and business. The ACU entitled these students for a summer school scholarship, and an opportunity to travel to Malaysia to attend this program. “Every aspect of the program was focused on the issue of global food security, from the talks on gender equality, climate change, food policy and safety,” The University of Nottingham Research Training and Academic Development Director Dr Christopher Hill said. The ACU appointed Nottingham University, located in Seminyak, due to the Crops for the Future Research Centre, a global research centre that wholly concentrated on food security, local food diversity, as well as the approaches to food production in Malaysia. CEO and Provost of Nottingham University Professor Christine Ennew said, “Our internationallyrecognised research in food security at both the UK and Malaysia campuses is a prime example of the way in which University expertise is being leveraged to address genuinely global challenges.” 8

Tony Abbott, Australia’s Prime Minister visited two Australian branch campuses in Malaysia last September, hopping from Curtin in East Malaysia to Monash in Peninsular Malaysia. Taking time off from his recent visit to Malaysia, Abbott went to both campuses to celebrate the education relationship Malaysia and Australia had long established, as well as learning about is development. Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) Pro ViceChancellor Jim Mienczakowski said that the newlyappointed prime minister was highly interested in keeping in touch with Australian CEOs of education in Malaysia, as well as acknowledging the progress of Australian-Malaysian education relationships. Abbott was also keen in finding strategies to better support Malaysian higher education. Abbott, moreover, got to acknowledge the development of Curtin East Malaysia – the largest international branch since its establishment in 1999, as well as the supporting role the Malaysian and Sarawakian state governments had greatly played. Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Rod Smith, the Secretary General of Education Ministry Madinah Mohamad, alongside with Mienczakowski and Monash pro-vice chancellor Helen Bartlett greeted Abbott with an afternoon tea, followed by a luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor in their Putrajaya official residency.

TAR University College A-Level Students Deliver Spectacular Results The May/June 2014 cohort outperformed the previous year, achieving a 97.3% pass percentage, with 34% of the cohort obtaining excellent results of at least 2As and 1B. Out of this group, 68% of them achieved at least 3‘A/A*s’ and above. During the Centre for Pre-University Studies (CPUS) High Achievers Certificate and Trophy Presentation Ceremony, held on 29th August 2014, the A-Level and AS Level high achievers were given due recognition for their outstanding achievement by receiving a certificate of excellence and trophy. The best A-Level (Science) performer this year is Lee Jong Wey, who scored 4 ‘A*’s. “Studying at TAR University College has helped me tremendously by opening my mind to new thoughts and ways of doing things” he proclaimed. He also credited his success to the team of dedicated lecturers at CPUS. Meanwhile, the award for best performer in the A-Level (Arts) went to Hassan Ali Huzam, a

Maldivian international student, scoring 3 ‘A*’s in the examination. He commended the lecturers and resources made available in TAR University College, for putting emphasis on understanding and practise, rather than memorising details. The ceremony also celebrated the outstanding achievements in the AS Level examination. There were 7 students who scored 5‘a’s, but the highest scorer for AS Level (Science) was Nicholas Loh Yung Li and the best performing student for AS Level (Arts) was Loo Yu Li, who also scored 5‘a’s in the examination.

Celebrating Chinese Culture

With The Non-Chinese The Chinese Language and Culture Society (CLCS) of Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration last September, inviting attendees from different ethnicities and backgrounds to learn about Chinese culture. Meant to bring out awareness and tolerance about the culture, the higher-than-expected turnout of international and non-Chinese students completed the festival’s whole purpose. Most of the students, moreover, made their debut attendance in the event, and were not shy to express their excitement and joy in the new culture acknowledgement. School of Foundation student Vikna Raj said, “This is my very first time participating in the celebration at APU, and it was a great and amazing experience. My friends and I had so much fun!” The celebration then invited The APU Dance Club to showcase hip-hop and traditional Latin dances as a portion of the performance. The Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration 2014 had developed to be one of the largest events the APU’s CLCS had ever hosted. Displaying various aspects of Chinese culture, including the traditional dessert, this year’s event turned out to be even more significant due to The Lantern Walk. Over 150 APU students and staff, equipped with traditional paper lanterns that housed brightly lit candles, began walking around the campus, marking the start of the Lantern Walk, and the ending of the celebration. 10

Taylor’s University Is Sharing Environmental Expertise For

Sustainable Tourism Development Taylor’s School of Hospitality, Tourism, and Culinary Arts (TCHT) shared its expertise in promoting sustainable tourism and its development with 20 Vietnamese public sector tourism administrators last September. The program, entitled ‘Environmentally and Socially Responsible Tourism Capacity Development’ (ESRT), was a part of the second phase of a three-year program running for the past two years. “Sustainable tourism is a key economic driver for the Asia-Pacific region, creating jobs and promoting more investments and developments to this region,” Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Dr Hassan Said said. “Through the ESRT Program, Taylor’s University aims to position itself as an institution renowned for research excellence while making an indelible impact in nation building,” Dr Said added. He then continued by citing the university’s capability in sustainable tourism development research and innovation, and relating it to the fact that the university’s expertise had trained 60 Vietnamese tourist administrators along the way. This year’s program participants enjoyed Q&A sessions with various notable industry experts, including the former leader of the Malaysian tourism board, and directors from various tourism organisations. The main goal of this research was to train participants in four main tourism areas, starting from responsible and sustainable tourism development, product development and event management development in tourism, tourism service and quality management, as well as sustainable regional or spatial tourism planning.

Curtin University Open Day Overwhelmed With Sarawakian Support More than sixty private and public corporate bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as individuals contributed in supporting the Curtin University Sarawak Open Day. Overwhelmed by the response obtained from the Sarawakians, Curtin Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jim Mienczakowski said that the university’s annual event had transformed into a major community event in the past eight years. He cited the Miri City Council as one of the committed event partners yearly, and the widespread support from local media and businesses, individual donors, NGOs, not to mention other governmental bodies. “It shows their commitment to ensuring the continued success of the university and our role as the leading educational institution in Miri and one of the top-rated universities in Malaysia,” Mienczakowski said. He then continued that Sarawakians attended the Open Day to discover the institution, as well as celebrating its educational research contributions and achievement in Sarawak through the years. The event, moreover, attracted close to forty sponsorships from individual and local corporate bodies, by contributing lucky draw and complementing gifts. Royal Brunei Airlines, for instance, sponsored return flight tickets to Melbourne, accompanied by complementing gifts from a tour agency and hotels. APU Students Exposed To Employment Opportunities In ABNxcess Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Asian Broadcasting Network (ABNxcess) last month to bridge its students with broadcasting and media industry internships and employment opportunity upon graduation. The MoU would enable APU students to experience the working world of broadcasting and media, as well as using utilities in the company, for instance, the studio, and media laboratory. ABNxcess, moreover, would play a role of an industrial advisor for the university’s related curricular undertaken by the students. CEO and founder of APU, Datuk Parmjit Singh explained the university’s fundamental objective to produce quality graduates who were knowledgeable of their field, as well as able to secure their long-term careers, and the MoU opened the possibility. “This collaboration will provide our students with valuable exposure that will perfectly complement their studies so as to make them truly industry-ready,” he continued. Another main purpose of the MoU between the two companies was to promote the interaction between the university and the newly established broadcasting company in terms of formal arrangements. The mutually-beneficial cooperation effort between both parties’ Research and Development Department, moreover, provided opportunity for the company’s employees who wished to further studies in areas where the company had interest in.

UCSI Receives Praises For Public Health Campaign In Diabetes

UTAR Symposium: Excellent Science Teachers In Need The first UTAR Symposium on Science Education was held at UTAR Perak Campus on 23rd August with the theme of ‘Innovation and Effective Teaching Methods in Science Education’. According to UTAR Vice President for Research and Development and Commercialisation Prof Ir. Dr Lee Sze Wei, they are aware of the declination of Science students in schools and the requirement for more people to be equipped with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills to build a creative, stable and thriving nation. Therefore, UTAR is starting a programme to train teachers to be the mentors in their respective field. Kluster Pendidikan dan Pembangunan Modal Insan, Majlis Professor Negara’s Deputy Head YBhg Prof Dato’ Dr Abdul Rashid Mohamed said, “The worldwide trend is increasingly to have teacher education drawing upon the full intellectual resources of higher education.” Thus, he is expecting to see excellent Science teachers that possess great communication skills, keen on Science, have a sense of humour and the ability to teach in a multicultural environment. Moreover, UNESCO and Intel are collaborating to gather information and communication technologies for educational advancement. UNESCO is also collecting digital resources for the teaching and learning in Mathematics and Science. Furthermore, UNESCO and YTN Korea K-Science Project are working on making Science-based television programmes to be available to public education TV channels in Asia Pacific.

UCSI University’s recent Public Health Campaign (PHC) in raising awareness in diabetes received acclaims from Selangor Health Department Director Dr Balachandran Satiamuti. Dr Satiamuti attended the event as a guest of honour, congratulating the tertiary education institution for taking the lead in the PHC. “I am pleased that UCSI reaches out to the public on a regular basic,” Dr Satiamuti said. “The PHC is a great way to promote awareness on diabetes – a major complication that drives up healthcare cost. The Health Ministry is doing its best to drive early awareness campaigns and UCSI’s efforts clearly support our initiatives.” He added that he was pleased to see UCSI’s aspiring pharmacists get out of their comfort zones, and conduct activities impacting the community positively. This year, UCSI’s Pharmacy Student Association hosted the annual PHC in Giant hypermarket in Subang Jaya, and themed it as ‘Treasure Your Health, Prevent Diabetes’. The student-based organisation cooperated with Diabetes Malaysia, an organisation focused wholly on social services for diabetics, to hold a two-day event, consisting of free health checks, for instance, blood pressure tests, waist-to-hip ratios, and urine tests to the public. It, however, invited healthrelated exhibitors to showcase their products, held Q&A sessions on diabetes and drug adherence, as well as drug compounding demonstrations.

USM Students Pioneer Mastering The Internet Of Things With Intel’s Galileo

Development Boards

Students from the School of Computer Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have paved the way for their peers in universities across Malaysia to fulfil their potential as high tech problem solvers of their generation. Under the guidance of Prof Dr. Rosni Abdullah, Dr. Nurul Hasimah and Dr. Mohd Adib, the second year students successfully tried their hands at playing inventors - creating high-tech solutions for everyday problems on the Intel® Galileo development boards. “Our aim is to fully embed the Intel Galileo development board courses appropriately within our curriculum. The initial plan was to start the program in the new academic year which begins in September 2014. However, after taking into consideration the high level of interest demonstrated by our students, we went ahead to introduce the Intel Galileo boards ahead of schedule in February to a batch of our second year students,” said Prof Dr. Rosni, Head of the Parallel and Distributed Processing Research Group of USM’s School of Computer Sciences. The solutions proposed by the students based on the development boards include a bus tracking system and motion activated lights, which may seem deceptively simple, but only goes to underline the ubiquity of computing technology in everyday lives that is on its way to coming full circle. Intel Galileo is the first in a line of Arduino-compatible development boards based on Intel architecture and designed to cater to education communities. Upon its announcement in October 2013, Intel said that it will work closely with the Arduino community to bring better performance and scalability to their projects. Part of these efforts include a large-scale donation of 50,000 Intel Galileo boards to 1,000 universities around the world with Intel initially collaborating with 17 universities worldwide to develop curriculum based on the new Intel Galileo board. These Norwegians Are Not Wrong Nico & Vinz are an international music sensation who have already set the European entertainment scene on fire. Hailing from Oslo, Norway, the singing/songwriting duo, made up of Nico Sereba and Vincent Dery, has tapped into the heart of global culture by writing and performing songs that joyfully speak of life, love and identity. Though it’s hard to name their sound, consider it reminiscent of The Police and Paul Simon’s Graceland. Since their debut in 2010 at the Emengeza Festival where they won first place for new, emerging artists, Nico & Vinz have topped Scandinavian charts thanks to their extraordinary storytelling, electrifying performances and riveting videos. In June 2011 they released their debut single, One Song which peaked at #19 on the Norwegian Single Chart and earned them a Spelleman Award (Norwegian equivalent to a Grammy) for the song’s video. But it was their 2013 hit single Am I Wrong that would top the Scandinavian charts and remain in the Top 3 on the Norway, Sweden and Denmark’s Spotify chart. The single has won an NRJ Award for “Song of the Year,” and another Spelleman Award nomination for “Hit of the Year.” To date, Am I Wrong has a 20x-platinum combined certification in Scandanavia. Nico & Vinz’s second Scandinavian single In Your Arms charted in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. In America, the video already has over 6 million views. Their follow up single In Your Arms, released only in Scandinavia, soared to the top of the charts as well. The duo performed both hits at the Nobel Peace Prize concert at the end of 2013 in Oslo. In early 2014, Nico & Vinz received the European Boarder Breakers Award (EBBA) at Eurosonic Festival, performed at the Spellemann Awards, rehearsed for their upcoming tour. Nico & Vinz have honed a unique sound, born of their eclectic backgrounds as both Africans and Norwegians. Their vision for the future is boundless. “We try to be 100% us. That mixture and that balance is what creates us,” says Vinz. That creative combination is what makes this new group one to watch. (Feature courtesy of Warner Music Malaysia)

Sylvester Stallone To Return As

John Rambo In ‘Rambo V’ It’s fairly safe to say that Sylvester Stallone has built a very rewarding, lucrative and long career on two iconic characters – Rocky Balboa and John Rambo. The star wrote, directed and performed in the sixth Rocky film in 2006, effectively drawing that franchise to a close. He then did the same with Rambo in 2008 – delivering a fourth franchise entry that brought the character full circle, with an ending intended to satisfy fans and bring them a sense of closure. But now, Rambo 5 is on the horizon. The character has been loved by fans since the first film exploded onto the big screen in 1982. First Blood saw Vietnam veteran and former Green Beret John Rambo arrive in the small American town of Hope, in Washington State. Searching for his friend from Special Forces, Rambo discovers that he died of a cancer caused by exposure to Agent Orange. Rambo then clashes violently with local authorities. In Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rambo was sent on a mission to search for American POWs left behind in Vietnam. In Rambo III, he is asked to help supply weapons to Afghan freedom fighters and when he refuse to, finds himself having to rescue his longtime friend and mentor Colonel Trautman, who went ahead without him. Then, in the fourth film (simply titled Rambo), he becomes embroiled in the Burma crisis – or Saffron Revolution – when he connects with a group of missionaries who are later in need of rescue. Since, at the end of 2008’s Rambo, the hero finally returns home, we would all have been forgiven for assuming that was the end of the character’s cinematic journey. In fact, Stallone himself agreed wholeheartedly with that assessment – according to his statement to Empire Online while promoting The Expendables in 2010. Do we know what he means? It’s doubtful. What we do know is that Sylvester Stallone is gearing up to shoot Rambo 5 – which will apparently feature him battling a Mexican drug cartel threat – and that can only mean one thing. Given that Rambo is a character he has adapted (from the novel ‘First Blood’ by David Morrell), written, nurtured and performed for over 32 years, and given that only four years ago he had seemed resigned to the fact that the franchise was over – the script for Rambo 5 must be something special and worthwhile, at least in the eyes of the man himself. Rambo 5 is expected to be released in late 2015 or possibly in 2016.

Tifosi Bid Ciao To Luca

LOUIS VAN GAAL WITH DI MARIA

Manchester United In No

Man’s Land Still

These are dark days for Manchester United fans. It’s been just 18 months since they were Premier League champions, but that seems like a very distant memory. The post-Ferguson era was a shambles, with every football fan and his dog baying for poor David Moyes’ blood. Although inheriting the same trophy-winning players, Moyes somehow managed to fluff up the team’s tactics and playing style beyond all match-winning shape or form. In his time in charge, there were only two significant buys to ‘bolster’ the squad – the overrated and underperforming Marouane Fellaini and the inexplicably underperforming Juan Mata. The end result? Manchester United ending a historic lowly seventh in the 2013-2014 League, out of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1995-1996 campaign and Moyes getting the boot four games from season’s end. Things were supposed to look up when Dutch maestro Louis Van Gaal was roped in as the manager during the off-season, fresh from his success in leading the Dutch national team to third in July’s World Cup. Expectations were built up when the new ‘messiah’ took the team to seven pre-season friendly wins against some top teams. Alas, the joy was short-lived as fans were treated to a shock opening League game defeat at home to Swansea City. At the time of writing, five games have been played thus far in the League, and United has only managed to win one game, drawing two and losing two. If you thought Moyes’ start to last season was bad, then Manchester United’s start to this season is nothing short of catastrophic, considering the players he acquired to strengthen the team. Ander Herrera, Radamel Falcao, and the British transfer record-smashing Angel Di Maria (at a whopping £59.7 million!) have shown flashes of brilliance and produced solid displays in midfield and attack. This was evident in its 4-0 demolishing of QPR. But a week later, United was dealt another pitiful loss in the League to newly-promoted Leicester City (3-5). Even Van Gaal has raised his hand and admitted his part in the mess. “We have too many players who want to seek for the goal.” No sh*t! United have spent a total of £200 million in the summer transfer window in a desperate bid to erase the Moyes nightmare of last season, yet unfathomably did not purchase a single top quality central defender who’s capable of marshalling and controlling the back, when this was what the team needed most. Especially in light of defending titans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic’s departure in the summer. In order to build a great team capable of winning trophies, a strong foundation is needed, and United’s defence is found sorely wanting. Currently, they look like the most unbalanced team in the division. Their defensive frailties were exposed in the Leicester match, and in an earlier League Cup match against unknown League One team MK Dons. At this stage, just imagine what Chelsea or Manchester City can do to them. When and unless they start addressing their defensive woes, it’s safe to say there’s a possibility that United might end this season worse off than when they started it.

Luca Di Montezemolo, long serving chairman of Ferrari and its illustrious Formula One team recently announced his departure from the famous Italian stable. His resignation follows scathing criticism from Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive of Ferrari’s parent company Fiat. The 67-year-old Di Montezemolo, who served as the president of Ferrari’s Formula One team since 1991, was under contract for three more years, and as recent as August has denied he would be leaving. Now, his departure will be on 13th October, and Marchionne will take over the hot seat. Though credited with turning Ferrari around in the late 90s, Di Montezemolo has presided over the humbling decline of the once mighty Prancing Horse of late. The Italian team have not won a championship since 2008, and its last World Driver’s Champion, Kimi Raikkonen was crowned in the year before that. Adding insult to injury, they have not won a race since May last year, and their last pole position was in 2012. Marchionne underscores this by saying, “The important thing for Ferrari is not just financial results but also winning – and we have been struggling for six years.” With Di Montezemolo’s departure, it effectively marks the end of an era for Formula One’s most successful and glamorous team. The suave Montezemolo combined his passion for racing with an elegant manner and has forged extensive contacts among the world’s sporting, social and political elites. He was, in many ways the embodiment of the Italian sports car maker. Without him in Maranello, the sport of Formula One may seem a little less colourful and Ferrari a little less flamboyant, but both will survive. It’s just a question of whether his replacement would be able to take Ferrari beyond just mere survival, as legions of demanding Tifosi fans would settle for nothing less than the top step of the podium. A

lso, you know tomorrow is going to be a long day in school with all the assignments and classes. Rather than having a day wasted, treat yourself to a full day of spa, starting from the top of your head to the tip of your toes! Why would you care? The 24/7, full-force, airconditioned classrooms will dry your skins up, that’s why. It’s now the time for you to pamper your hair and body with these au naturel concoctions. Better yet, you do not have to spend a single dime, as we are sure these ingredients are in your pantry! P.S. Don’t be shy boys, try them out! These masks and scrubs are definitely applicable to you too!

Pamper yourself! Mask ‘n Scrub from head to toe

C

oconut Oil Hair Mask

Firstly, let’s treat our hair well. Even though it has been pronounced dead by our scalp once it is out of the roots, it is still definitely treatable to be healthier. As you might well know, beautiful hair equals healthy hair. The way of beautifying it is not by the chemicals you find on the store’s shelf, but with all natural ingredients!

26

| CAMPUS PLUS

Coconut oil has successfully set its reputation as your hair’s best friend. The perfect combination of protein, iron, vitamins B and C it has boils down to various results on your locks – lustrous, silkier, and stronger hair. The best part of coconut oil is it promotes hair growth! We kid you not, you can see the result after just a few days of applying this mask. You are going to need: COCONUT OIL The amount used depends on your hair length. The longer it is, the more you need, naturally. Short hair requires around two tablespoons of coconut oil.

TOWEL You are going to need this to cover your shoulder and protect your top. It is a little difficult to treat your laundry with oil stains on it. TWO CLIPS Use one to clip your hair (if it is long), and the other one to clip your towel – just to make sure it stays. SHOWER CAP You know what this is for, but this one is optional. What you need to do: PUT towel on your shoulders, and clip it. APPLY coconut oil to your hair. Work your way from the ends to the roots, because the ends receive the most styling and tend to be the driest part of your hair. Don’t forget to massage it in for five minutes! COVER it with a shower cap, or not, if you don’t have one. If your hair is long, stick it in a bun.

What you need to do: PUT a towel on your shoulders. MASH only the flesh of one whole avocado, and then mix it with one tablespoon of honey and olive oil. APPLY it on your hair, starting from the ends to the roots. LEAVE it for 30 minutes to an hour. If you are in a rush, you can just leave it for 20 minutes. PUT on your shower cap and wash the concoction off your hair!

N

ow let’s pamper your scalp with baking soda!

Baking soda is one of the most useful ingredients you can find in your pantry. Its acidic content helps to polish your body, hair and even works well as a teeth-whitening agent.

LEAVE

it for 30 minutes to an hour. You can even leave it overnight if you could stand the strong smell of coconut – we can assure you, you will smell like you are having coconut biscuits cream all over your head. WASH it off well. You can use shampoo, but using only conditioner (cold wash) is highly recommended.

A

vocado, olive oil and honey hair mask

These three ingredients will totally revitalise your hair, and prevent split ends. Avocado is not only a delicious fruit; its natural fats content prevent the ends of your hair from splitting! It is uncanny that honey is not only used as a healthy replacement for sugar, it works wonderfully on your hair and body as well. It encourages your hair to shine. Shiny hair equals shining confidence! Everybody knows that olive oil is the best fat you can find in stores, and not only is it useful for your food and body; it is healthy for your hair as well. It acts as a natural conditioner. What you need:

ONE AVOCADO ONE TABLESPOON OF OLIVE OIL ONE TABLESPOON OF HONEY SHOWER CAP TOWEL

WHAT you have to do is mix one part of baking soda with two parts of water in a mixing bowl. APPLY the concoction on your scalp, massage it for a few minutes, and do your usual hair regime after. It’s that simple! OKAY, so you are done with your hair. While waiting for it to be fully absorbed, you can now start pampering your skin.

S

ome sugar for your skin

This is the simplest but happens to be one of the most amazing scrubs to ever exist in the DIY world. Both sugar and salt act as natural exfoliators, and olive oil, as you have known before, is great for literally everything. What you need:

HALF A TABLESPOON OF FINE SUGAR HALF A TABLESPOON OF SALT ONE TABLESPOON OF OLIVE OIL

Method:

REALLY, just lather it all over your body and wash it off. It is going to be oily at first, but you can wash it off with soap afterwards.

C

offee and oatmeal body scrub

Coffee is not only a great beverage to fight off sleepiness; you can use it to help reduce cellulites as well. Oatmeal, on the other hand, is a natural moisturiser. What you need:

ONE TABLESPOON OF COFFEE HALF A TABLESPOON OF OATMEAL HALF A TABLESPOON OF SUGAR ONE TABLESPOON OF OLIVE OIL It is totally normal if you feel like eating this scrub because it smells amazingly delicious! Why not? Go ahead and taste these babies, as they are 100% natural and edible. We can assure you though that it does not taste as heavenly as it smells.

What you need to do: FINELY grind the oatmeal (this is optional, our tester did not grind hers). MIX all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl. LATHER it all over your body WASH it off! TIP: If you run out of sugar, you can skip the sugar, because coffee itself is a natural exfoliator. After washing all of these off your body, we can assure you that you would feel healthily rejuvenated. What’s more, they are as easy as A, B, C, and it is as affordable as not buying anything at all! Have an awesome day trying these concoctions up!

ANTI-ACNE REMEDIES

OCTOBER 2014

ACNE, LEAV E ME ! AL O NE

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

All of us know that pimples are notorious for showing up at the wrong time, particularly if you are meeting with someone. Acne is actually a common skin problem among teens that occurs when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores. However, severe acne problem can cause emotional distress and lead to scarring of the skin. The good news is there are effective ways available to solve this. Here are five golden rules you need to know to prevent it from getting worse.

5

1

Golden Rules To Reduce Acne

Don’t touch

Move your hands away from your face. Your hands touch everything and carry thousands of bacteria. Constantly touching your face or pimple will spread the bacteria to your face and will lead to clogged pores and acne. Don’t be surprised if the pimple’s healing time is slow and the problem spreads across your face. You have been warned now.

2

Don’t pop pimples

It may seem like a good idea to decrease its appearance at first, but the fact is it doesn’t actually go away and makes things worse. Bacteria is contained in that acne spot and popping it out allows the bacteria to spread around your face to cause more acne. Apparently, a hands-off policy is the only way to truly avoid worsening a breakout. 28

3

Wash, but don’t overdo it

4

Eat healthily

5

No alcohol in your facial products

Yes, please wash your face twice a day to maintain good hygiene and to remove dead skin cells, excessive oil and dirt from the surface. However, bear in mind that over washing will only irritate the skin and make acne worse. The more you wash your face the better is definitely a myth.

The list of foods that trigger acne is getting longer and longer. Sad to say, but it may be time to change what you eat if you want to prevent clogged pores. On the bright side, chocolate is not on the list. Avoid bread, refined grains and milk products to protect your skin.

From now on, take note of the ingredients that your facial products contain. If your beauty products contain alcohol, you should stop using it because it can dry out and irritate your skin.

Miacare, the acne fighter! For those who struggle with acne, Miacare is here to the rescue. Say goodbye to the fear that acne once brought you. Miacare knows how to get rid of them effectively. With three different acne-defense products in house, each of them are specially formulated to efficiently tackle the acne problem that you are facing. Miacare’s Acne-Defense Spot Essence focuses on clearing acne by reducing sebum effectually. While its Acne-Defense Concealer Stik helps in removing acne and is suitable for acne prone skin. On the other hand, Miacare’s Acne-Patch is unique as it comes in a thin patch that absorbs acne pus naturally, thus preventing bacteria from contaminating. Now that you know that a handsoff policy is crucial in preventing acne breakout, Miacare has taken this into consideration for its Acne-Defense Spot Essence and Acne-Defense Concealer Stik. Both of these products come in a sleek and functional pen design to help you clear and cover the acne anywhere and anytime easily. That’s right, no more bacteriainfested fingers making contact on your skin! What makes it even better is their products are alcohol-free, so you can use them with complete ease of mind. Try them out now!

THAT’S A WRAP!

OCTOBER 2014

Thinking Malaysian weather is too hot for scarves? That is definitely debatable.

T

he fact that it is summer all year long around here in Malaysia does not halt fashionistas from keeping scarves, shawls and wraps as part of their fashion statement and style getup. Scarves are not only worn during winter/fall, you can use it to pump your plain T-shirt and jeans up! Egyptian Queen Nefertiti was known to be accountable for popularising scarves as a fashion piece. She ingeniously incorporated a finely woven scarf on her conical headdress, a style that shaped her into a fashion icon, even up to now. Influenced by the ancient and original beauty queen, Hollywood celebrities, regardless of gender, add further to the fame of scarf-wearing as a fashion statement. As for us college students, it is inevitable that we love to be stylish all the time in campus, while still being warm and comfortable in our outfits. You know what we are talking about; spending obscene amounts of the day in super freezing lecture halls! That is how scarves come to the rescue!

BAND OF OUTSIDERS’ REALISTIC FASHION

OCTOBER 2014

THE WORK OF SURREALISTS

34

| CAMPUS PLUS

What are the things that can fill out a woman’s wardrobe? The answer is simple and direct: things she will actually use. Band of Outsiders Fall/Winter 2014 collection features easy silhouettes, cosy fabrics and simple but refined oxford shoes as their debut. Inspired by the surrealists, “people who had fun making clothes”, mixing of materials are what Band of Outsiders emphasise on. With surreal in mind, trompe l’oeil tricks were played in this collection and an unexpected offsetting pattern was introduced.

This is a collection of paying reverence to the end of newspaper. Ranging from denim gradients and polka dots, which meant to reference the printing process and punctuation respectively to British-prep-inspired tartan trousers and work wear details. With the presence of pageboy hats in some looks, there was a newsboy vibe to the clothing and reflects its classic, comfortable and humble nature.

he New York Yankees was once completely reluctant in allowing the replication of even their signature cap. The legendary team’s general manager, George Weiss, sarcastically commented in the 1950s that he would not be pleased to see every kid in the street of New York wearing the team’s special cap. Thirty years later, however, the whole notion of baseball jersey’s exclusivity changed. These teams realised that they could directly promote their team’s fame with exclusive merchandises. They have been squeezing every penny from their fans ever since. As time goes by, fans are not the only people who wear these jerseys, fashionistas have started adopting this fashion trend. Hip-Hop and R & B artists mainly have been accountable in popularising the jerseys, as they are leading street style under the spotlight. Its fame has skyrocketed even further now that official baseball teams do not even have to take the hassle to replicate these jerseys for fashion. Numerous street fashion producers have happily done it for them, ah thank you.

‘JERSE IT UP! Once upon a time, baseball team executives did not allow anybody to wear their jerseys. They wanted to keep it exclusive for their team members.

A PEEK INTO DEPRESSION

OCTOBER 2014

T

he recent demise of funny man Robin Williams, whose struggle with depression has highlighted the seriousness of the illness. Depression is not simply being sad; we all get sad every now and then, but depression is far worse. At best, you will feel useless and non-productive, and at worst, you may even end up wanting to take your own life. Yes, the effects of depression can be fatal! Therefore, it is definitely not a condition to be taken lightly. Student life however, opens up new doors to allow depression in as it imposes inevitable stress. For those already battling depression, or going through a tough time outside of their student life i.e. familial or relationship problems, monetary issues and so on, these stressors can trigger anxiety and episodes of depression. In this issue, we look into this critical illness and give you the low down (pun not intended) on this problem.

Identifying The Monster First, let us know how to identify depression. Though, it is very difficult to spot at times, and sometimes, even those who are undergoing it may just dismiss it as sadness. Generally though, there are a few symptoms and warning signs that you could look out for, to determine whether or not a person, including yourself, is depressed. These are: • Feeling hopeless and helpless • Loss of interest in daily activities • Sudden change in appetite or weight • Change in sleep patterns • Feeling lethargic • Self-loathing or reckless behaviour • Self-harming or suicidal thoughts However, depression really is an elusive illness, and not all who depict these symptoms can be classified as a depressed person – as it varies from person to person, and the symptoms are akin to the normal lows of life. If anyone has felt some of these symptoms for an extended period of time, the more likely it is that they are dealing with depression. It does not help too, that those who suffer from it tend to hide their problems from friends and family, who may be able to help. 40

In these fast-paced, results orientated times that we live in; a serious ailment is creeping into society like never before. Depression is rampantly growing among individuals across all levels of society, especially students. We look at depression and its effects along with some methods to overcome it. Symptoms may be too subtle for many others to realise, but the effects can be very damaging. Prolonged feelings of despair and hopelessness could eventually lead one to take their own life, as they are unable to see any point to continue living. No wonder then, that living with depression has been likened to living in a dark hole.

Why So Serious-ly Sad? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), suicide rates globally are highest amongst those aged above 70, but in some countries, the highest rates are found among the young. Clearly, college and university systems can be so high-pressured that it is contributing to the depression rate, which can even lead to student suicides. Student life does not just revolve around studies, and although academic stress may be the main contributing cause to a student’s depression, there are other aspects of life that also cause a student to fall into depression. Manager of the psychology centre at HELP University College, Serena Sinniah,

who is also a clinical psychologist, noted that aside from being predisposed to depression, students might have depression triggered or exacerbated by several other factors. Among reasons given by students seeking help with depression include academic performance and the pressures that come with needing to score high grades, adjustment to the school environment, difficulty in forming friendships and fitting in, peer pressure on various issues, being bullied or left out in social situations, as well as a preoccupation with family issues while in school. She further added that the prevalence of depression cases in Malaysia is around 9-10% of the population and depression is one of the top disabling diseases in the country. Some diseases have a specific medical cause, which makes treatment rather simple – either by having surgery or taking medication. Depression though, is more complex. This is because it is not just the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, but rather depression is caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and sociological factors. Yet there are certain risk factors that make you more vulnerable to depression.

A PEEK INTO DEPRESSION

OCTOBER 2014

Living With Depression Mr. QPR has been living with depression since his teen years. However, in the beginning he thought that it was just a normal part of his disposition. That he was just more inclined to feeling sad and down compared to his peers. His friends and family though, never noticed or figured that anything was amiss. He would still hangout when friends called him for drinks, but little did his friends know about the tempest that was brewing inside of his mind. QPR carried on suffering on his own, way into his 20s. It was at this age, when he made a decision that would change the lives of those around him. He had almost taken his own life. Thankfully though, his friends got to him before he made that fatal decision. Only after that close encounter did people, himself included, realised that there was something terribly wrong, and he promptly sought out professional help. He visited a private mental health clinic, and thus began his road to recovery. First, he was put on medication. Then, slowly but surely he began working towards a more holistic health solution. QPR started exercising, thinking positively and turned to religion – which he says is one of the biggest factors to recovery for him. Since then, QPR has learnt not to take life for granted, and tells all those who are suffering like him that they should share their problems with their loved ones; and that they are not alone in this battle.

The Light At The End Of The Tunnel There are a few methods of treatment for depression:

Asking for help and support: Don’t be afraid to talk to your loved ones and share your problems with them. Sometimes just sharing your problems might work wonders.

Make healthy lifestyle changes: Although more difficult done than said, they can have a big impact on depression. Just add some exercise and healthy eating to your regime and you may notice the difference in your moods.

Seeking professional help: Sometimes your loved ones may just not have the proper skills or abilities to deal with, or even just listen to you at times. Then perhaps, seeking a professional counsellor or therapist might work – don’t let what others may make you think, or the stigma that there is something wrong seeking professional help get to you. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SEEKING HELP.

Anti-depressants: Medication can help relieve the symptoms of depression in some people, but they come with setbacks of their own. Learn your facts before you make a decision about whether medication is the right approach for you.

“Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by @$$#oles.” – Steven Winterburn

By truly understanding the source of your sadness, you may be able to overcome your depression. For example, if you are depressed because of your inability to study, the best treatment might be to try different methods of study – like with groups, or having a reward system for your achievements, not by taking an anti-depressant. If you are new to a school and feeling lonely and sad, finding new friends or participating in a hobby will probably give a more positive effect on your mood than perhaps going to therapy. In cases such as these, the depression is remedied by changing the circumstances and environment you are in.

Being A Shoulder To Lean On If you know of anyone who is suffering from this illness, it may be very difficult to offer help. The thing with depression is that, it is an illness and you cannot simply tell a person to “cheer up” or “stop being sad” and hope for it to go away. Those who are suffering from depression have an altered view of reality, and don’t necessarily see things the way you do. The best thing you can do is probably hear them out, and let them share their burdens with you. You need not solve their problems, because most of the time no one but themselves would be able to get past it. Therefore, you have to remind yourself that you are not their psychologist or counsellor, and with that, feel compelled to offer advice, if any at all. Do not despair that you can’t seem to do more for your loved ones and friends as they go through these difficult times. Just being there for them, and trying to understand them, without giving harsh criticisms or judgement is definitely the best thing you can and should do for them. Remember that being a compassionate listener is much better than giving advice. Alternately, here is a list of some hotlines that one may call at moments of desperation or sadness, when you or someone you know thinks they have no one else to talk to – or just do not or cannot confide in those close to you.

UNCOMMON CROSS CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

OCTOBER 2014

SIX YOUNG ADVENTURERS BAND TOGETHER FOR A ONCE IN A LIFETIME TRIP AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE BOSCH WORLD EXPERIENCE

| CAMPUS PLUS

B

osch’s 16 days around the world experience started on 20 July 2014 for a group of 6 young adventurers hand-picked from tens of thousands of applicants. The destination cities were London, Panama City, San Francisco, Shanghai, Singapore and a surprise destination which turned out to be Berlin. The group was introduced and exposed to the different sights, sounds, food and cultures of the world and shown how Bosch technology influences everyday life. The six Bosch explorers were Tolgay Azman from Germany, Amy Watkins from the United States, Luiz Júnior Fernandes from Brazil, Roy van den Heuvel from the Netherlands, Xia Yanru from China, and Malaysia’s very own Loh Hong Khai. All of them come from different backgrounds and yet were able to enjoy their around the world experience and learn from each other. Campus Plus had the honour to talk with our country’s adventurer, Loh Hong Khai. He is an Engineering student from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, majoring in Electronics and Communications Engineering.

‘Even in your phones, the gyroscope is invented by Bosch, so all our smartphones include Bosch technology’

the location of a very important foundation, The Robert Bosch Stiftung. The staff there showed their work in implementing projects and initiatives that meet social needs in Germany and abroad. I was really surprised to learn that the foundation, a non-profit organisation owns 92% of the Bosch Company. CAMPUS+: What was your reaction when you learned you had earned a spot on the Bosch Around the World experience? LHK: I really did not expect to be chosen; because from a pool of fifty thousand applicants, it is really quite a thing. And I was really surprised and happy when I got the news. My head went blank and I was like, “Wait, is this real?” It was really a very pleasant surprise. C+: What did you learn about Bosch that you didn’t before? LHK: There is so much that Bosch is involved in. From Heavy Engineering like the Hydraulics for the Panama Canal, to smaller scale engineering like cars and batteries. They are heavily involved in the automotive and industrial engineering. And now after the trip I know how much Bosch is actually involved in. Even in your phones, the gyroscope is invented by Bosch, so all our smartphones include Bosch technology along with the electrical bicycles that we used in San Francisco. When people think about Bosch they usually think of power tools, home appliances and in the United States their dishwashers are popular. They really are all-reaching in terms of engineering and are actively involved in many international projects that people are not aware of.

C+: So what would you say was the highlight of your trip? LHK: For me, I would say when we were in Panama and we went whale watching, it was really an unforgettable experience. We went from mainland Panama to a small island, and on the way we saw some whales; we got really close and there were about three or four whales in front of us. You can imagine the excitement of everyone on the boat when the whale leapt out and slammed back into the water. You know it is a very special moment when even the tour guide whips out his camera, and he told us we were really lucky to be able to see it. Another one would be the Panama Canal. We were there at the right time because it was the famed canal’s centennial celebration. The canal is considered one of the engineering wonders of the world. When the team was there we were standing on the lock, a device for raising and lowering boats between waters of different levels on the canal. It was a crazy sight I must say, you can see the whole ocean in front of you, and the really huge container ships passing by. There is zero margin for error, and coupled with the fact that the canal has operated daily for a hundred years without major incident is really amazing. It really is an engineering marvel.

C+: Among all the places you have been to, which has been your favourite? LHK: That is a tough question. Personally, I think between London and Berlin. I really liked the architecture in London, like the Big Ben. And I was really amazed when I was on the London Eye which is powered by Bosch technology as well, and you had a bird’s eye view of the whole Thames River; being there you could really feel how international London really is. Germany was where Bosch was founded, and we went to

C+: Any part of the trip that you felt could have been better? LHK: Generally, I have to give credit to the whole team. We had small glitches but everything was very smooth. We were able to visit some local restaurants, bars and other places so it was not just all scientific and technical, which I really appreciate. If you really want me to choose something, I would say a longer trip. At the end, it was a great journey, I made good friends along the way and I miss them already.

WONG KUAN LOONG, THE ANIMATION INDUSTRY

OCTOBER 2014

Boundless Creativity Animation offers a medium of storytelling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world 46

POWERED BY

WONG KUAN LOONG

W

ong Kuan Loong, nicknamed “Ah Loong” is the Chief Operating Officer of Animasia Studios. Animasia Studios has produced many beloved animated series, including Bola Kampung and Chuck Chicken, and has an international audience with animations like Roll No. 21 winning multiple awards in India. We at Campus Plus had the pleasure of being invited to the Animasia headquarters and getting the lowdown on all things animation with the man himself. Campus+: Thank you for meeting with us and taking the time to have this interview. Please tell us a bit more about yourself. Ah Loong: Hi, my name is Ah Loong and I’m the Chief Operating Officer of Animasia Studios. As the Chief Operating Officer, I am in charge of the creative direction and also the daily operations of the animation production.

EVERY PROJECT THAT YOU SEE COMPLETED FROM US, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A CANCELLED PROJECT. IT TAKES A PROJECT THROUGH MANY SERIES OF REJECTIONS, MODIFICATIONS IMPROVEMENTS AND REDO(S) BEFORE IT IS EVER PUT INTO PRODUCTION AND COMES OUT AS A FULL RELEASE

C+: What inspired you to go into the animation business? AL: Well, I think all children like cartoons and animation, myself included. I liked and immensely enjoyed cartoons like Thundercats, Smurfs and Transformers. I also did a lot of role-playing with my friends; and I found that I have a lot of stories to tell, and I enjoyed telling them. C+: Were you self-taught or did you take courses in animation? AL: Actually I was self-taught, I studied fine arts (in college) and it had nothing to do with what I am doing right now. Many of my staff are actually self-taught as well, because most colleges now do not emphasise on art and drawing, even if the courses are for animation. We usually take in people who have drawing skills, and provide on-the-job training to operate the software. The most important thing I think is passion, it is what drives us and we really need that.

C+: In your opinion what is the most fun part of a project? AL: I think the most fun is the part where the animators start animating the characters, because that is how immediately you can see the results. But because I don’t work on that part, for me personally I think it is the story development and brain storming parts; for every episode we have a brain storming session to come up with a story, and after we have that we need to think about how the story flows and other details. For me that is one of the most interesting parts of a project. C+: What happens to cancelled projects? AL: Every project that you see completed from us, it might have been a cancelled project. It takes a project through many series of rejections, modifications improvements and redo(s) before it is ever put into production and comes out as a full release. We come up with an idea, maybe people reject it, so it is shelved for a period of time; and after we have some new ideas for improvement and we present it again. Then maybe it gets rejected again, then we repeat the process until people think it is good enough, and we run with it. C+: What challenges in the animation industry do you face in Malaysia? AL: I think it’s the talent. When we started the company there was no such thing as an animation industry (in Malaysia). I still remember back when we put recruitment ads on the newspapers and the replies were good, but right now it is extremely limited. We are trying to let more people know, especially college students, what we are doing and the ins and outs of the industry. C+: Lastly, what words of wisdom would you like to share with young aspiring animators? AL: As a student or a young animator, I think you guys need to think out of the box and try to be open to any suggestions or comments on your work. Come join Animasia, we would like to listen to you!

C+: How did the company start off? AL: In 1996, I started a rather small multimedia studio with three employees; during that time we did a lot of educational software development for local publishers. Those usually came with very limited animations, simple movements and actions and are very small sized on a computer screen. C+: How long does a season of an animated series take to complete? AL: It really depends on the project. Like some series are 13 episodes and each episode is half an hour, some are 52 episodes of 11 minute shorts. Normally one season will take a year or maybe even more than a year, it depends.

HALLOWEEN GHOST BUSTING

lifehacks/diy

by aaron pereira

OCTOBER 2014

How To Get Rid of Gho worldly Creatur The modern day celebration of Halloween is believed to come from a pagan celebration called All Hallows Eve; a night to commemorate the dead. Somewhat like the Hungry Ghost Festival that we have over here. As such, whether you believe it or not, supernatural beings are bound to be lurking around at these times.

T

o inform yours truly and bring peace of mind to all our superstitious readers during this spooky occasion, we at Campus Plus have compiled some common (and uncommon!) everyday items to deter and chase away all that evil from you:

Garlic This common kitchen ingredient is good and highly effective in the fight against vampires! Wear them like a garland around your neck and you will keep even Robert Pattinson away, never mind vampires. Unless of course, if you’re into the whole getting-bit-in-the-neck thing. In addition, it has been proven that if you consume enough garlic, you can even get rid of unwanted attention from potentially creepy suitors – so it’s a lifesaver not limited to just Halloween time.

Dream Catcher For those who don’t already know, a dream catcher is a handmade object based on a willow hoop, on which is woven a loose net or web, and then decorated with sacred items such as feathers and beads. It works to filter out bad dreams, and give you a good night’s rest – without having to worry about Freddy Kruger, the bogeyman, your sociology lecturer or any other menacing dream monsters.

Salt Yet another common, everyday kitchen item which works to ward off evil spirits. Place some salt at the perimeter of an object and it will create an impenetrable barrier against ghastly beings. However, do not add too much salt into your foods, as you may end up facing another kind of bloody killer – high-blood pressure to be exact.

48

| CAMPUS PLUS

osts, Ghouls and Other res (DIY-style)

Crystals Gemstones are said to dispel evils; with each kind of stone having its own function. For example, tourmaline is believed to prevent interruptions in communication, and amethysts for personal protection. Beware where you display the gems though, as gemstones are also known to attract certain earthly demons, like thieves and gold-diggers!

Silver Bullet This is the only sure fire way to kill a werewolf. Though, a silver bullet may be difficult to get your hands on, as silver is expensive. We would advise you then, to just stay indoors; don’t go clubbing or what not during full-mooned nights, in order to avoid bumping into Jacob a werewolf that will tear you to shreds.

Lights Everyone knows darkness is where evil lurks, as we have learnt from countless horror movies; everything bad only happens in the dark – well sometimes good things do happen in the dark too, but that is not what we’re discussing for now. Thus, stay in well-lit surroundings and you should be safe from most attacks, or at least be able to see what is coming at you.

Zombies In order to get rid of zombies, you have to kill them; best if you decapitate them to be sure. Hence any household item can be used, like knives, a shovel, an axe, power tools. Use your imagination, be creative! However, do ensure that the person you’re going to bludgeon to death is really a zombie. Try to locate their pulse, and if in so doing, they attempt to take a bite at you, kill them. OCT 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

A FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS & COLOURS

Fun Fact: ‘Kolams are termed differently in other parts of India. It is known as Hase in Karnataka, Muggulu in Andhra Pradesh, Chowkpurna in Uttar Pradesh, Alpana in Bengal and Assam, and Rangoli in Gujarat and Maharashtra’

T

his issue’s Art and Culture feature takes a look at the colourful and often intricate world of kolam art.

Culture & History

A practice that hails from India, kolams are said to symbolise auspiciousness, and apart from being a decorative piece, the kolam serves as a religious ritual – Hindu women used to wake up before dawn in order to complete their kolam drawings for their households. These geometrical patterns are usually drawn outside homes as an invitation to the Hindu goddess Lakshmi (though there are specific kolams for various deities) and also to keep evil spirits at bay. Here in Malaysia, we get to see these marvellous works of art not only in homes but in malls as well, during Deepavali celebrations.

Creating

Back then, the most common substance that was used in the drawing of kolams was rice flour. It is believed that this was done in order to allow small creatures such as birds and ants to also feed on it. Thus, maintaining harmonious coexistence with other living beings. With the passage of time, the art has developed and modern iterations include other materials such as paints and vinyl in the creation of kolams. One of the reasons for this is so that the kolam lasts longer. Especially so if placed in such busy areas such as shopping malls. Of course though, one who doesn’t use the various modern aids in creating the kolam is seen as a true master in the art; being able to create the art pieces with their own hands and traditional materials.

Creations

Kolam patterns are up to the individual’s preference. Design motifs are usually inspired by abstract patterns combined with the familiar designs that reflect religion or philosophy. Therefore, animals, plants or wordings can be infused together with patterns. There are a few types of methods with which kolams are drawn. To name a couple, there are line kolams that are drawn freehandedly and Pulli, which is a method where dots arranged in a specific sequence are joined to form the pattern. The artist can create many works of art using various methods. Commonly seen kolams are the sahasradala padmam, known as the “thousand petal lotus”, or oil lamp designs, especially during the Deepavali period. Sugar cane motifs are more common during the Pongal or harvest festival.

BACK THEN, THE MOST COMMON SUBSTANCE THAT WAS USED IN THE DRAWING OF KOLAMS WAS RICE FLOUR. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THIS WAS DONE IN ORDER TO ALLOW SMALL CREATURES SUCH AS BIRDS AND ANTS TO ALSO FEED ON IT

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun

If you’re looking for some good laughs, we definitely recommend ‘Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun’ to you. We can’t stop laughing whenever we watch it. The characters are hilarious in their own way. They are all distinctive, but they blend in with each other well. It keeps being hilarious every episode and you won’t be disappointed. What we really like about this anime is they never reuse their jokes, which is extremely rare for comedies. It is an excellent comedy that you don’t want to miss.

farewell,

SUMMER! Summer has ended, leaving us with four fascinating anime that you shouldn’t miss. Thanks to them, we had an enjoyable summer. If you’re looking for some good anime or wondering about our top pick for the past summer, then read on and look no further.

alien hypergate on the moon’s surface in 1972. The hypergate led to the human migration and settlement of Mars, and an inevitable war occurred in 1999 between the Mars settlers and Earth. 15 years later, in 2014, an assassination attempt on the Mars’ princess during a peace mission causes the Mars settlers to launch a new attack on Earth. And this time they are determined to conquer Earth for good.

Ao Haru Ride

Aldnoah.Zero

If you’re a huge fan of anime, then you would know about Urobuchi Gen or his nickname “Urobutcher”. Even if you don’t, please start to remember this fearful, yet admirable name. He is the man who’s known for his dark style and tragic plot twists. With the amazing body of work he has done previously, we have slightly raised our expectations of ‘Aldnoah.Zero’. Nevertheless, it is still as good as it should be. Starting off with an exciting introduction, you can’t help but watch till the end. ‘Aldnoah.Zero’ revolves around the discovery of an ancient

Zankyou no Terror

Tokyo has been completely devastated by a large-scale terrorist attack! It sounds like another really bland story until you realise that the terrorist masterminds are two teenaged boys who call themselves “Sphinx”. A confusing video with a riddle will be uploaded to the Internet by them before the terrorist act takes place. The psychological aspect of their sick games is truly thrilling and it’s amusing to watch how the conclusion is derived.

Romance is a dangerous topic. It’s been a long time since we found an anime that gives you butterflies in your stomach. It makes your heart beat faster and all the blood rushing to your head. To be honest, it’s the typical high school romance that could be found everywhere and it delivers everything that you would expect. However, what makes it great is it focuses on the depths of the characters’ relationships and feelings. The exploration of the character’s feelings makes us excited because it takes us directly back to high school and to the exact same feelings that we experienced then. CAMPUS PLUS |

GET HURT THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM

All eyes are on The Gaslight Anthem to see what they have come up with on their fifth album. In some pre-release interviews, the vocalist and guitarist, Brian Fallon claimed that the album is “completely different than anything we had ever done before”. With this

claim, Fallon may have unintentionally caused their fans a few sleepless nights recently. When you listen to the entire album, you will know that Fallon is not exaggerating. Older, wiser, nicer with a number of fresh diversions are what you will hear on this album. This is the first time they use electronic instruments and digital technology to layer lines and muddle sounds. However, what really sells the album are 1,000 Years and Get Hurt. 1,000 Years is an entertaining and fun track that concludes in a typical Gaslight classic rock style. Get Hurt is a luxurious pop ballad. It has some nice 80s touches that keeps it catchy and smooth. It is an invitation album from The Gaslight Anthem to invite us to take a journey with them. For fans, Get Hurt is a challenge for them to re-examine why they fell for The Gaslight Anthem in the first place.

What’s fantastic about this soundtrack is the use of live instruments instead of manufactured studio beats. Adam Levine’s Lost Star is a great example of this. With his superb falsetto, it makes this track special and beautiful. If you like soul music with a sense of humour, CeeLo Green’s Horny and Women of the World should suit your taste. Green’s deep and soulful voice with the sounds of numerous instruments make the tracks shine. What we like about Keira Knightley is her genuine voice. It’s true that her vocal range is very limited and shaky sometimes. However, the nature of her voice suits slow and chilled out songs that don’t require fancy vocal technique. In Tell Me If You Wanna Go Home, Like A Fool and A Step You Can’t Take Back, Knightley’s voice is perfectly accompanied with soft and gentle instruments that captures our heart. Each song is performed with soul and it is an art form that can truly express one’s emotions.

PIXIE LOTT PIXIE LOTT

After the huge success of two of her previous albums, Pixie Lott is back with her self-titled album. The standout tracks of the entire album are Nasty, Lay Me Down, Raise Up and Leaving You. Nasty is funky and catchy and shows off the livelier side

THE GOLDEN ECHO KIMBRA

Don’t try to fit this album under any genre because Kimbra merges every genre you have ever loved from childhood onwards. The lead single for this album, 90’s Music is what you would call out-of-the-box. The song is funky, outstandingly engaging and

of Lott. Lay Me Down is definitely our favourite as it gets you in a good mood and you just can’t stop listening to it. While Raise Up brings out some much needed soul. Trust us, this track will instantly become your favourite. It demonstrates a nice vocal performance with powerful instruments that stays in your head. Leaving You is a solid ballad that entices you with Lott’s incredible vocal range. The marvellous vocals, the simple choir and piano are what we expect from her “personal” record. Overall, it’s a fun album that’s filled with solid songs that makes you want to sing along.

brilliantly arranged. However, this is definitely not a song for everybody and may even be a turn-off for you. We would suggest you skip this song and proceed to others because Kimbra is much more than this one song. Carolina immediately changes the pace and transfers you to dreamland. The song is energetic yet innocent. The other standout tracks are Nobody But You, Miracle and Madhouse. Nobody But You is clean, while Miracle has deep disco grooves. Both of the songs are upbeat and sweet on the ears. If you are not a fan of Kimbra, Madhouse may just win your heart. It is luscious, joyful and incredibly hyper. Overall, this album gives you a unique listening experience because there’s nothing quite like it.

PARAMORE LEAVES US WANTING MORE

W

ell, first of all, they’re a real band. I feel like I can hear all the elements of their personalities in their music. They’re the greatest people in the world. There are a lot of great people, but very few of them are in great bands, and that makes for a really good combination. And in terms of being a performer, Hayley Williams is on the level of Michael Jackson. I really mean that. I don’t know if I can think of another band where I can go to their concerts and just stare at the stage the entire time. I wouldn’t miss a second of a Paramore show: They give me simultaneous feelings of massive arena rock and what I would imagine it would be like at a good Gorilla Biscuits show. There’s a very odd hard-core element there; I think the way Hayley performs, conducts herself onstage and interacts with the audience feels like a real New York hard-core thing going on. Any band that can bring that kind of energy in an arena is the greatest thing in the world. They make the arena feel like a club, which is the goal of

any big band. At the end of the day, there is no better live band. Beyond their live show, they keep pushing themselves further and further on their records. Paramore (the band’s latest self-titled album) sounds nothing like the ones before it. There’s nothing more exciting than watching a band come up and then wondering, “Where is it gonna go?” They’ve been unafraid to go mainstream and have a great audience, but they’ve never let their art suffer. And that is so important: Bands

that aren’t afraid to be big but aren’t afraid to make interesting work are so vital. My favourite Paramore moment? Fun were on tour with them in Europe in 2010. We were in Liverpool, England, and Nate Ruess barged into their dressing room or something, and Hayley ran up to him and smashed her red hair dye on his head, and he had blotchy red hair on that tour. I always remember that fondly. (Feature courtesy of Warner Music Malaysia)

The car was significantly damaged, and the members felt the crash badly. Thankfully, they were immediately moved to a hospital for a check-up, and none of them were significantly hurt, just shaken up.

SECRET SUMMER

DARK & WILD

SECRET

BTS

Secret has returned, as sexy and cool as ever with their fifth mini-album. The promotional single, I’m In Love develops a jazzy pop infusion with big band instruments and vocals from Secret. It is a song that makes you feel like it’ll fly apart at any time. Could Do Well is our personal favorite. It slows things down, giving us a ballad with a touch of soul. U R Fired is another strong song that reminds us of 90s-era American pop songs and may be the pop-iest song in the mini-album. While listening to Look At Me, there are some similarities to Britney Spears’ Womanizer. However, the song goes in different directions to make it distinctive. This song successfully presents Secret’s signature, which is mixing old and new elements together. You may think that the mixing of electronica and violin isn’t done nearly enough, but this is exactly what Secret would do. We do hope to see Could Do Well promoted later this year. Overall, this is a pretty satisfying album.

How could you miss BTS’ first full album that showcased the best aspects of Korean music with its unique sound? Danger is the rock influenced lead track on Dark & Wild. It reflects a mid-80s American pop song by including synthesizers and guitars to achieve a stimulating effect. Hip Hop Lover helps the group successfully distinguish themselves from other idol groups as they return to the hard edged rap sound that combines soothing R&B vocals. It is a song that makes the entire group shine. BTS also ventures into jazz territory with Rain. Listen to it and you’ll find that the track is surprisingly breezy with its piano accompaniment. This is a track that embraces a more mature sound. With the combination of the overall vocals of the group, Can You Turn Off Your Phone becomes the stand out track on the album. Dark & Wild is a fun ride that you shouldn’t miss.

LADIES’ CODE’S GO EUN-BI

Just three days later, girl group Ladies’ Code were returning to Seoul after attending a recording of the ‘KBS Open Concert’ in Daegu, when the van they were travelling in skidded in poor weather conditions while attempting to avoid a collision with another vehicle, before crashing into a protective wall. The tragic accident claimed the life of 21-year old Go Eun-bi and fellow group member, 23-year old Kwon Ri-sae (better known as RiSe). Then, on 12th September, Big Bang’s Seungri was behind the wheel of his Porsche when he collided with a Mercedes-Benz, resulting in an accident in which his car rolled over and hit a guard rail. Fortunately, no lives were lost in this accident, just minor injuries sustained by

Seungri and the occupants of the other car. Police have confirmed that the K-Pop idol was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, but have yet to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. On the same night, yet another K-Pop idol was involved in a minor car accident. GOT7’s JB was in a car with his manager and stylist when a city bus made light contact with the car they were travelling in. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Eun-bi and RiSe, and we mourn their passing. We hope that all drivers exercise more caution on the road, and practise safe driving to reduce the likelihood of such tragedies in the future.

DOMINO

2014 S/S

SHIROSKY

WINNER

Calling herself “the first female jazz hip-hop musician producer in South Korea”, Shirosky has actually developed a unique and adventurous style in her music. Domino is definitely a major step forward. She has improved her concept of bridging jazz and hip-hop while increasing modern electronic blips and bleeps. On the opening track Polaroid, we can hear the amount of time she has spent in tweaking and perfecting her music to create this uniquely funky song with so many abstract layers. There are tons of sounds and delays popping in and out the entire track. We can’t help but fall in love with Pink Sand that features the vocals of MINI. This track is a perfect showcase of her amazing, jazzy chords and her electro hip-hop influences. We loved it from the first beat right to the last.

2014 S/S has exploded on the Korean music charts and reflects the musical diversity of Winner. The album starts with Empty, an erotic, sexy and smooth song that got us really into it. Winner got this song right with their voices harmonising in such an amazing way using their falsettos and high notes. Color Ring is a sad, melodramatic song which starts off with a piano intro and transitions to acoustic guitars. What makes it mind-blowing is the vocalist’s voice blending well with the rapper in a strange but good way that makes the songs unbelievably good. Don’t Flirt may be the song that is most out of place on the album because it’s more upbeat and it’s too happy for Winner’s elegant aura. However, this would be the most danceable and catchy track on the album. After listening to Different, we can’t help but wonder why it isn’t one of the title tracks on the album. It’s an amazing song and we strongly suggest you give it a spin. Overall, we loved this album and recommend that you get it!

DEPRESSION TRIGGERS

OCTOBER 2014

wellness

“WHY AM I

DEPRESSED?”

THERE ARE MANY WELL-KNOWN DEPRESSION TRIGGERS SUCH AS TRAUMA, GRIEF, FINANCIAL TROUBLES AND UNEMPLOYMENT, JUST TO NAME A FEW. OFTEN, DIFFERENT CAUSES COMBINE TO TRIGGER DEPRESSION. FOR EXAMPLE, YOU MAY FEEL LOW AFTER AN ILLNESS AND THEN EXPERIENCE A TRAUMATIC EVENT, SUCH AS BEREAVEMENT, WHICH BRINGS ON DEPRESSION. IF YOU’RE DEPRESSED AND NONE OF THESE APPLY TO YOU, IT CAN BE HARD TO PINPOINT A SPECIFIC CAUSE. PLUS, CLINICALLY, THERE IS NO SINGLE CAUSE OF DEPRESSION. YOU CAN DEVELOP IT DUE TO DIFFERENT REASONS AND TRIGGERS. Some common triggers for depression:

SMOKING Smoking has long been linked with depression, though it’s a ‘chicken or egg’ scenario: People who are depression-prone may be more likely to take up the habit. However, nicotine is known to affect neurotransmitter activity in the brain, resulting in higher levels of dopamine and serotonin (which is also the mechanism of action for antidepressant drugs). This may explain the addictive nature of the drug and the mood swings that come with withdrawal, as well as why depression is associated with quitting smoking. Avoiding cigarettes and staying smoke free could help balance your brain’s chemicals.

DEATH/LOSS Most people take time to come to terms with stressful events, such as the death of a loved one or a relationship loss. Some take more time than others because grief differs

from normal sadness in both duration and intensity for different people. When these traumatic events happen, you have a higher risk of becoming depressed if you stop seeing your friends and family and you try to deal with your problems on your own. If you find yourself unable to concentrate and focus or if you start having unexplained physical symptoms i.e. extreme weight gain or loss, you need to seek help. Remember, nobody has to go through this alone.

FAMILY HISTORY Researchers are becoming increasingly aware that depression runs in families - sometimes across multiple generations. If someone else in your family has suffered from depression in the past, such as a parent or sister or brother, then it’s more likely you will too. This may be due to the genes you’ve inherited from your parents, or because of your personality or early life experiences. Individually, you may be more

vulnerable to depression if you have low selfesteem or being overly self-critical. But all’s not lost. Start by building up your self-confidence and surround yourself with positive people as you draw strength from them.

ILLNESS The risk of depression is high if you have a longstanding or life-threatening illness, such as coronary heart disease or cancer. Also, some people may have an underactive thyroid (a butterfly-shaped gland in the lower part of the neck) a.k.a. hypothyroidism. This means that your thyroid is secreting insufficient amounts of the thyroid hormone, which, in turn, could interfere with the functioning of virtually every organ, tissue and cell in the body. If you have hypothyroidism, you may experience symptoms of fatigue, lethargy, difficulty concentrating and excessive sleepiness that may lead to feelings of depression and the extreme sadness and despair that can accompany it. COME JOIN THE PARK SIDE

OCTOBER 2014

A

lso known as the National Park of Pahang, Taman Negara is the largest protected area in Malaysia, encompassing three states namely Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. Spanning an extensive land area of more than 4,343 square kilometres or 434,300 hectares in primary rainforest, it is the country’s premier national park. Its reputation as the oldest tropical rainforest in Malaysia also means that most of the extensive tree coverage remains unchanged for centuries. This pristine and evergreen forest also serves as an added benefit or advantage for nature lovers and jungle explorers alike since much of Taman Negara’s indigenous flora and fauna has evolved over hundreds of millions of years and remains largely untouched. Think about it, a 130 million year old jungle with a rich ecosystem and complex biodiversity is sure to enchant anyone and bring out the “wild” side in all of us.

DIVERSE WILDLIFE Home to a vast collection of over 2,400 species of flowering plants, 200 species of mammals, 350 species of birds, 67 species of snakes, 55 species of frogs, 80 species of bats, 30

species of rats and 109 species of freshwater fishes, Malaysia is ranked 12th in the global mega biodiversity index. Such abundance in biodiversity with an astounding or phenomenal array of plants and animals is often fragile and threatened by human development. Thus, Taman Negara was gazetted as a Protected Area in 1938. This was done in order preserve them for future generations and to maintain a gene pool of the wide range of species. Considered by many as one of the ‘Great Natural Wonders’ this national park is indeed a national treasure and a wonder of nature. Taman Negara is home to some rare mammals, such as the Malayan tiger, crab-eating macaque, Sumatran rhinoceros, Malayan Gaur (seladang) and Asian elephant. As well as birds such as the Great Argus, Red Junglefowl, and the rare Malayan peacock, which are still found here in some numbers. Sungai Tahan has been preserved to protect the Malaysian mahseer (ikan kelah in Malay), a type of game fish.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES GALORE The most popular activities at Taman Negara are jungle trekking and river cruises. Observation

hides are another great way to observe wildlife. Simple huts built high above the ground allow guests to stay overnight to catch opportunities to observe animals in their natural habitat. If you are not faint-hearted, go for a walk in the jungle at night and enjoy the special atmosphere as you see the tropical forest nightlife. This walk will take you about one and half hours. Wear long-sleeved tops, pants and lather yourself with anti-mosquito repellent to repel worms, leeches and mosquitoes. Cave exploration is also available, either by boat or by foot. Taman Negara is also famed for its bountiful freshwater fish population. Fishing at the Sungai Keniam and Lata Berkoh is another popular activity among visitors. Fishing is in season in the months of February, March, July and August. Experienced and amateur anglers are most welcome to fish their hearts out during this time. There is another towering attraction in the park. Gunung Tahan is the highest point of the Malaysian Peninsula; climbers can use Kuala Tahan or Merapoh as their departure point. It’s also the most difficult mountain to reach its peak. It might take you seven days to travel to the top of the mountain. Remember to carry your own food and tent for this journey to the top.

THE GREAT

outdoors beckon! Fancy a tropical vacation in the jungle, anyone? If you’re an outdoor buff or an adventure junkie, the answer lies in Taman Negara, Pahang.

SPLENDID BIRD’S EYE VIEW Another great attraction of Taman Negara is the canopy walkway, which is the longest suspension bridge in the world. It is about 530 metres long and strung up to approximately 40 meters high above the forest floor, so it’s not for the faint of heart! It consists of nine bridges and 10 viewing platforms. Originally developed for research purposes, the canopy walkway is now mainly used by nature lovers to see the rainforest from a unique perspective. The canopy walkway is opened daily from 10 am to 2.45 pm except on Fridays; whereby it is open from 9 am to 12 pm. However, for safety reasons, the canopy walkway will be closed on the spot during windy rains and heavy thunderstorms.

ACCOMODATION Visitors to the park have various choices, from comfortable resort-styled facilities, homestays to tent camping at various camping grounds. For luxury, the best is to stay at the Mutiara Resort. Located inside the park, prices range from US$1.50 for a hostel to US$350 for a bungalow per night. For the backpackers,

one of the options is homestay at Travellers Home. Normally, food is included, the service is excellent and prices are about RM75 per night per person.

2

GETTING THERE So, have we got your attention yet? Facts and figures aside, the following is how you can get there and experience for yourself the splendour and majesty of Taman Negara. KTM intercity and express trains stop at the Jerantut KTM railway station. Visitors to Taman Negara can disembark here. Local tour operators also arrange transportation from Kuala Lumpur to the entrance of the Park at Kuala Tahan. This encompasses a 3-hour bus journey followed by a 2.5 hour river boat ride to Kuala Tahan. Entrance permits and park tours are often included in the package. Bear in mind that all visitors to the park must obtain permits from the Department of Wildlife and National Park (i.e. Jabatan Perhilitan dan Taman Negara).

A HIDDEN BREAKFAST HAVEN

OCTOBER 2014

Hidden within a sports centre, in the bustling city of PJ is Jam & Kaya, a cosy café like no other

B

eing a busy, or lazy, student sometimes makes us have to miss out on the important things in life – like breakfast, which is arguably the most important meal of the day. We sometimes wake up late, way past breakfast time, or are rushing to get to class after having woken up late. Fret not though, as Jam & Kaya Café serves breakfast (and many other gastronomic delights) all day long! Started by friends Janice and Karen; they drew inspiration for the place from the time they lived in Melbourne. “We used to walk around a lot, between streets and hidden alleys, and at the nooks and crannies of these roads, you would often see a coffee shop, which served good coffee, and we thought – why not here in Malaysia too?” enthused coffee loving Karen. As for the name, the duo simply used their initials ‘J’ and ‘K’ and thought of Jam and Kaya –

which one would usually find among breakfast foods. However, jam and kaya are featured only slightly in the menu. The usual caffeine fixes are available here (espresso, lattes, Americano etc.), but there is also a twist to the coffees served here, which appeals especially to chocolate lovers. There is the option of adding Choco Balls – which do not melt in your hot or cold drink BTW! Thus, you get to do a bit of chewing as you sip on your drink. One of their most famous dishes is the Farmer’s Pancake Breakfast (RM18.90). This meal tastefully stacks a sunny side-up egg on a golden hash brown, chicken ham slice, sautéed button mushrooms on top of the pancakes and salad leaves drizzled with syrup. A feast fit for two kinds of people: those who farm, and those who do not. If you are looking for something more familiar, you could always opt for the everfamous Egg Benedict (RM16.70), which

The desert menu is far from boring and changes depending on the type of cakes baked by Janice. Chocoholics must try the Crunchy Flourless Chocolate Cake (RM10). With its baked chocolate top and crispy praline base, it will leave you hankering for more. Alternately, if you are not much of a chocolaty person, you can try their Raspberry-Passion Fruit Mascarpone (RM10) that fuses the flavour of both fruits intricately between layers of vanilla-bean chiffon. The ambience, like the place itself, is cosy and the music volume is at just the right level, so you can enjoy your conversations with friends, or if alone, just enjoy the music and food. What’s more, there is even a pool not too far from the restaurant, making it a scenic surrounding for the cosy café. This hardly seen café, nestled in the PJ Palms Sport Centre opens from 10a.m. to 7p.m. from Tuesdays to Fridays, and from 9a.m. to 6p.m. on weekends, which is generally the busiest. If you are a foodie or coffee lover who dislikes wasting time in search of parking, this treasure trove of good food and coffee is the place for you! You can either get off at Taman Jaya LRT station and walk over or hand your keys to the valet outside – but you could still spend time looking for a parking spot if you insist. comes with a slice of tasty chicken ham and freshly baked croissant with salad leaves and hollandaise sauce. Then there is also the pancake section of the menu, which displays the various selections of pancakes available. For a savoury and sweet breakfast, you should try their Salted Caramel Crunch (RM16.50), which is trickled with caramel and lightly toasted nuts, topped with whipped cream and strawberry slices. Besides that, there are plenty other styles of pancakes to try out too. Apart from the breakfast menu, there are several filling and hearty mains to choose from. In addition, Janice who was schooled at Le Cordon Bleu in France adds her baking skills to the fray and creates her own delectable pastries for desert lovers too.

DELUSIONS OF GENDER

STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST

AUTHOR: CORDELIA FINE

AUTHOR: AUSTIN KLEON

It’s the twentyfirst century, and although many have tried to raise unisex children—boys who play with dolls and girls who like trucks— most have failed. Even though the glass ceiling is cracked, most women stay comfortably beneath it. And everywhere we hear about vitally important “hardwired” differences between male and female brains. The neuroscience that we know tells a tale of two brains, and the result is more often than not a validation of the status quo. Women, it seems, are just too intuitive for math; men too focused for housework. Drawing on the latest research in neuroscience and psychology, Cordelia Fine debunks the myth of hardwired differences between men’s and women’s brains, unravelling the evidence behind such claims as men’s brains aren’t wired for empathy and women’s brains aren’t made to fix cars. She then goes one step further, offering a very different explanation of the contrasts between men’s and women’s behaviour. Instead of a “male brain” and a “female brain,” Fine gives us a glimpse of malleable, mutable minds that are continuously influenced and shaped by cultural assumptions about gender. Passionately argued and unfailingly shrewd, Delusions of Gender provides readers with a much-needed corrective to the belief that men’s and women’s brains are intrinsically different—a belief that, as Fine shows with insight and humour, all too often leads to the detriment of humans and society at large.

PERSONAL AUTHOR: LEE CHILD The typical guy doesn’t read much, but when a book is written in a fast-paced and action-packed style and centres on a one-of-akind antihero who uses his wits and brawn to mete out pain and justice to the deserving, even uncouth jocks and the girls are lapping it up. Lee Child is no literary genius, but boy can he spin a gripping yarn around his fictional character, Jack Reacher. Personal is Child’s latest bestseller and book 19 in the Jack Reacher series. The book sees the ex-military cop reluctantly roped in by the State Department and the CIA to hunt down an assassin who has taken a shot at the president of France in the City of Light. The cold, hard facts of the case: the bullet used was American, and the distance between the gunman and the target was exceptional. Because how many snipers can shoot from three-quarters of a mile with unwavering confidence? Very few, but John Kott – a top American marksman gone bad – is one of them. Reacher was the one who put him in prison, but now after 15 years caged in a cell, Kott is out and looking to make history by taking out some choice world leaders at the G-8 summit in Paris and of course, to settle a personal score with Reacher.

You don’t need to be a genius; you just need to be yourself. That’s the message from Austin Kleon, a young writer and artist who knows that creativity is everywhere and it is for everyone. A manifesto for the digital age, Steal Like an Artist is a guide whose positive message, graphic look and illustrations, exercises, and examples will put readers directly in touch with their artistic side. When the author was asked to address college students in upstate New York, he shaped his speech around the ten things he wished someone had told him when he was starting out. His talk went viral, and Kleon dug deeper into his own ideas to come up with this book. The result is inspiring, hip, original, practical, and entertaining. It is also nicely filled with new truths about creativity – nothing is original, so embrace influence, collect ideas, remix and reimagine towards discovering your own path. Follow your interests wherever they may lead you. Stay smart, stay out of debt and risk being boring – all this will help foster the creativity you will need to be wild and daring in your imagination and intellect.

Logitech Powershell Controller + Battery

ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP300LA and TP500LN

The Powershell Controller + Battery by Logitech is an iOS MFi-certified game controller. As the name suggests it adds physical gaming buttons and a battery pack for iPhone users. Major iPhone games commonly use on-screen controls like the directional pad and action buttons; this can be a problem with some games however as sometimes almost half your screen is covered by your fingers, and can negatively impact your gameplay. With the Powershell however, this problem is instantly solved, and with well-designed and well-built buttons, it feels like you are gaming on a console controller which is a much more superior experience then using your fingers on the screen.

With so many new electronic products coming out recently as we are nearing the end of the year, companies need products that really grab your attention. The ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP300LA and TP500LN are among the few that do. The ASUS Transformer Book Flips are designed to work as a laptop, a tablet, or anything in between. It has a touchscreen that can be set at any angle from 0 to 360 degrees. The extra flexibility is a very big plus; add in the powerful i7 processor and you have a serious contender for one of the most powerful pseudo-tablets out there. The main difference between the TP300LA and the TP500LN is their screen size, with the TP300LA at 13.3 inches and theTP500LN at 15.6 inches.

PHILIPS M1BT HEADPHONES

OCTOBER 2014

Philips M1BT,

Form Meets Function

Had enough of those garish and ostentatious headphones you see everywhere? The sleek design and the awesome sound of the Philips Fidelio M1BT might just be right for you.

T

he M1BT is the latest addition in the range of headphones from Philips’ Fidelio. With added Bluetooth functionality, these headphones enable the wearer to enjoy their music on the go without worrying about entangling their wires in any way.

DESIGN The design of the Philips M1BT is quite different from what you would expect from mainstream headphone design. There are no flashy, garish pieces of chrome here, just sleek, lustrous aluminium for the ear shells. Faux leather covers the head band and gives it a premium feel. The ear shells themselves do not cover your ears completely, they more or less cover them with a tight grip. Wearers with glasses may feel uncomfortable after long periods of use due to the frames of the glasses and the ear shells pinching the top of your ears between them. The ear pads that are actually in contact with your ears feel comfortable; made with memory foam, wearers will unlikely feel discomfort even through long and constant use. The dark blue finish gives it a classy look, making it wearable anywhere, anytime. The change volume, power and change tracks buttons are on the right ear shell; they enable the wearer to easily tweak and adjust their experience without constantly having to do so on their main device. 74

SOUND QUALITY The sound quality of the Philips M1BT is superb, with or without the wires. Most Bluetooth audio devices (including headphones) need to sacrifice audio clarity for that extra portability; not with the Philips M1BT though; using aptX audio decoding, the sound quality produced when using the Bluetooth function are on the same level compared to when they are plugged in, which is no mean feat. The Philips M1BT headphones uses neodymium drivers and closed-back ear cups to offer excellent noise isolation, even when playing at full volume (this is not recommended to protect your hearing). It is hard for people around the wearer to discern the sounds produced; on the flip side it is also good at blocking out ambient noise that may interfere with whatever the wearer may be listening to. The headphones have exceptional clarity and a sense of warmth to the sounds produced, though bass may not be as pronounced.

CONNECTIVITY The Bluetooth capability is where the Philips M1BT truly shines; you won’t need to worry about constantly reaching for the charging cable because the battery life on the M1BT is fantastic. It is rated at 10 hours and can generally last you throughout a full day of listening. You will not have to worry about using too much of your main

devices’ power as well – testing with multiple phones, the headphones’ battery impact on the phones were barely noticeable. Distance of the headphones and the device can be an issue however, as the range of the Bluetooth capability is surprisingly small and can easily interrupt the listening experience if the wearer is not careful with the distance between the headphones and the connected device. In conclusion, I was impressed by the technology showcased by the Philips M1BT, and I would recommend these to wearers who prefer and appreciate the more subtle and graceful design of the M1BT. The Bluetooth capability really shines if the wearer is constantly out and about and wires dangling around can be an issue. The warmth and the clarity of sound makes this pair very well suited for classical and pop music, and everything in between. We liked: Great sound Sleek design Bluetooth functionality Amazing battery life We disliked: Short range on Bluetooth A little bit on the pricey side

MOVE WITH YOUR

MUSIC With the Philips BT2500 you can bring along and share your music wherever you go.

Quality Sound

The BT2500 boasts a 1 x 2” speaker driver with 3W of output power. Don’t let the small size fool you, the BT2500 comes with stereo sound and a built-in anti-clipping, preventing audio distortion caused by clipping without affecting volume. And the 5 hour built-in battery does not compromise on sound either, as anticlipping reduces peaks caused by low battery.

Built-in Microphone

With the built-in microphone, the BT2500 also works well as a speaker phone. When a call comes in, the music is put on pause and you can talk via the speaker. Take a call from your significant other when you’re listening to music. Or, call your friend from a party. Either way, it works great.

Quality speakers on the go, the Philips BT2500 combines great sound with portability. The BT2500 is best used as a portable audio companion for your smartphone, tablet or laptop; it combines the high quality sound of a dedicated audio device with amazing portability.

Bluetooth Connectivity

The Bluetooth function of the BT2500 lets you enjoy your music without the hassle of any wiring. The speaker still includes the audio in port for audio jacks of course, but you can connect via Bluetooth from most Bluetoothenabled devices such as your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

Music on the Go

One of the best features of the BT2500 is its small size and tiny weight. With a length and width of 10cm and a height of 3.5cm, it can fit into almost any pocket or small bag; and with the BT2500 weighing in at just over 200 grams, you will barely feel the burden of carrying it. Enjoy amazing portability without compromising sound quality.

I-MEGO THRONE GOLD

DROP THE OCTOBER 2014

SOUND QUALITY

Style and great music can be yours with the I-MEGO Throne Gold

T

he Throne Gold from I-MEGO is a part of the Throne series of headphones. One of the two in the Series, the I-MEGO Throne Gold is one of the flagship models of the I-MEGO brand. Â

DESIGN

One of the features of the I-MEGO Throne Gold is its interesting and innovative overall design; the real standout is the ear shells which are shaped to look like retro microphones. The ear shells are made with hardened plastic; though it does not affect the build quality too much, it might be a turn off to some prospective buyers. The ear shells are stated as being over ear i.e. right on top and covers your ears, but with the oval shaped ear shells they kind of covered my ears wholly but were still touching them with the sides, sort of like semi over ear headphones; the ear pads themselves are made of memory foam which makes them very comfortable and suitable for extended periods of wear. The headband features genuine leather with the signature I-MEGO stitching. Overall, the retro look is impressive and wearers will not find many headphones with similar designs. 76

| CAMPUS PLUS

The I-MEGO Throne Gold is touted to have great sound quality. The bass is stated to be heavier than the other model in the series, the I-MEGO Throne Poison. I am happy to report that the sound quality is as good as the ads say, and maybe even a little better; the bass is very pronounced compared to other headphones of similar price range, so wearers that are fans of music with heavy beats such as electronic, techno and hip hop will really like the sounds produced. The trade-off however, is the slight muffling of some sounds in the higher range; it is barely noticeable but it is there and audiophiles might find this to be a slight turn off. The sound isolation is fantastic; while testing it and playing music on full blast, my colleagues could barely discern any noise from the headphones, which makes it great for places like libraries or computer labs where other headphones might leak sounds and bother other people. The I-MEGO Throne Gold has a built in microphone and call button on the cable, and enables wearers to receive calls on the headphone without having to awkwardly pull out your phone from your pocket if you are on the go.

CONCLUSION Overall, I liked the I-MEGO Throne Gold very much, with its mid-range price it offers standout design and above average sound quality. Some improvements could have been made though. It would have been a nice bonus if the I-MEGO Throne Gold had a removable cable so

that way wearers could replace it if the cable gets damaged. It doesn’t feel cheap or like it will snag and break, but if someone really pulls hard enough or yanks at it, there could be damage. As mentioned before, the ear shells are made of hard plastic instead of premium metal, so it just feels slightly cheaper but it does not detract from the overall build quality. Also worth mentioning, the I-MEGO Throne Gold comes pre-packaged with a draw spring bag and two adapters for easy transportation, safekeeping and use on multiple different devices.

Visit www.i-mego.com/shop/p-1-thronegoldpoison.aspx

We liked: Deep, rich bass Standout design Good sound and build quality for the price Built-in mic and call button We disliked: Non-detachable cable Sound quality in certain ranges is not that good

Some of the models on display include heavily modified Fords, Chevrolets and even some other super cars like the Lamborghini Countach and the Ford GT. One of my own personal favourites is the Ford Mustang. Campus Plus was able to get a handson experience with a souped up Chevrolet directly imported from the United States. Our accompanying driver, TJ Chin who is

the managing director of JPM Motorsports, showed us the ropes. We were later to drive the Chevrolet around the area, and it was quite a different experience from driving a standard road car. The engine was very powerful so we had to be careful accelerating, and the steering was a little more difficult with the huge wheel and bulky proportions of the car. The passion and love required to work on these cars is remarkable, the amount of manpower and care dedicated to the vehicles is obvious and the end results are indeed astounding.
